I went home and when I got
home found two of my brothers

final say in where we end up.

pastors in our denominations

growing up in Brooklyn,

they gave me an IQ test.

And the results was,
I was in number seven.

So I came out, so I
dropped out of school

and went into show
business, et cetera.

But then when I went to the army

I began to try to figure
out how the read the Bible.

My reading level was about

and I didn't paid
attention to reading

because I did
everything of music with ear.

So I taught myself
and learned to play,

et cetera by ear.

So consequently I
was very, very slow

And when I became converted
I want to get baptized,

I went to the pastor and I said,

I need to get baptized.

He said, well, first you
got to take Bible studies.

I said, what's that?

So he handed me
stack of studies like this

and when I looked
at the first lesson

I couldn't even read the
name of the king of Babylon.

To me those were
$50 words, you know.

And so I thought, man,
I'll never get baptized.

This is what
it's gonna take, yeah.

So I said to the pastor, look--

I was too
embraced to tell him like

I was basically illiterate.

So I said, Pastor,
listen, I want to serve the Lord

with all my heart and I
said, I've given up everything.

I mean, I didn't go on a
trip-- on the world tour.

I called up the Comets
and told them I wasn't going.

And so I gave up my amplifier,
my guitar and everything

and I was
finished with that life.

Sold out to Jesus.

And so I said, I
promise you Pastor,

the rest of my life.

And then when I got drafted

I actually spent most of my time

studying the word,
trying to figure out.

of Bible commentary

with me in my duffle bag.

It was big at that time.

them and a dictionary

so I could figure
out what the word meant

the end of the year.

concerning the scriptures.

witnessing to the soldiers,

sharing with the soldiers.

And so they
couldn't figure me out

because I was placed in
the headquarters' company

and most of the
guys in my barrack

had Master's degrees.

And I had a Master dropout.

So anyway, they
couldn't figure me out,

they couldn't figure how was it,

that I could give them answers

when I was basically illiterate.
