And that is the person of Jesus.

world is in chaos in reality.

But it's good to know that in
the midst of all the confusion,

the heartache, the
sadness, the loneliness,

it's good to know
that there's still a peace

that can be found in the
midst of all of this confusion.

You know, the message of Christ
00:02:18.07\00:02:19.97
is one that is brought to us in
colorful language in the Bible.

There are many places
you find the language.
00:02:24.04\00:02:25.94
In the Old Testament
you find the prophets
00:02:25.97\00:02:27.84
telling of the coming of
Christ and the birth of Christ.
00:02:27.88\00:02:31.05
As Isaiah 9:6 says,
"For unto us a child is born,

unto us a Son is
given and the government
00:02:36.48\00:02:39.75
shall be upon His
shoulder and His name
00:02:39.79\00:02:41.92
shall be called wonderful,
counselor, the mighty God,
00:02:41.96\00:02:45.96
the everlasting Father,
and the Prince of Peace."

In this confusing world
today, in the hustle and bustle

of the holiday season
shopping it's good to pause
00:02:52.57\00:02:55.77
and listen to the voice
that so many pay no attention

to during the rest of the year.
00:02:59.57\00:03:02.14
As a matter of fact,
when I read the Bible
00:03:02.18\00:03:03.55
and I think about
the story of the season,
00:03:03.58\00:03:05.38
one of my most
favorite stories is found
00:03:05.41\00:03:07.95
in the book of Luke Chapter
2, speaking about shepherds
00:03:07.98\00:03:12.12
who were keeping watch over
00:03:12.15\00:03:13.79
their flocks by
night in the field.
00:03:13.82\00:03:16.49
And today if we would translate
that word shepherd today,
00:03:16.52\00:03:19.73
I would somewhat be a shepherd.
00:03:19.76\00:03:21.13
That is an under shepherd.
00:03:21.16\00:03:22.53
Jesus is the chief shepherd.
00:03:22.56\00:03:24.60
And He calls on
those who have been given
00:03:24.63\00:03:26.60
the responsibility to
watch over their flock,
00:03:26.63\00:03:29.04
to even watch
over them by night.
00:03:29.07\00:03:31.17
And our world is at the darkest
point that it's ever been.

But walk with me
through a couple of these verses

because I think it's
so interesting to find out

how the Lord chose to reveal
Himself to these lowly shepherds

that simply did
what came naturally.
00:03:43.75\00:03:45.99
And we know that Jesus
wasn't really born on December.
00:03:46.02\00:03:49.56
We know that
the 25th of December
00:03:49.59\00:03:51.06
has a lot of
different connotations to it.
00:03:51.09\00:03:53.13
Some are
Christian and some are pagan
00:03:53.16\00:03:55.46
but the good news
is that Jesus was born.
00:03:55.50\00:03:58.93
We find in Luke 2:8 these words,
00:03:58.97\00:04:03.54
"Now there were
in the same country
00:04:03.57\00:04:05.54
shepherds living
out in the fields,
00:04:05.57\00:04:07.61
keeping watch over
their flock by night."
00:04:07.64\00:04:10.61
Now this had to be
before the rainy season
00:04:10.65\00:04:12.81
and before the cold
seasons of the winter.
00:04:12.85\00:04:15.45
And the reason why
shepherds watched over
00:04:15.48\00:04:17.09
their flocks by
night is because, well,
00:04:17.12\00:04:19.82
it was not uncommon
for a sheep to be stolen.

As you know, that was very much
00:04:23.02\00:04:24.39
a part of the ceremonial system.

And unfortunately,
because of sin in the earth

they had some things to contend

with then that
we contend with now.

But there they were
never knowing that the Lord

was going to raise the
curtains and begin a celebration

that will last
for centuries to come.

Giving them the good news

that while they are
watching over their flock,

there's a little Lamb
somewhere else being born

that will bring
to the world a news,

a good news that

It continues in verse 9,

And we think about it today,

Wal-mart or in J.C.Penney's

or maybe in Macy's or whatever
store you're shopping in,

often times in the
background that soft music

"Silent Night, Holy Night"
reminds us of this glorious

evening when the
shepherds were visited

with the most wonderful news.

But I like the way it continues.

Then they said to the shepherds

in verse 12, "And
this will be a sign to you:

You will find a Babe
wrapped in swaddling clothes,
00:05:47.64\00:05:51.45
laying in a manger."

And I read the
story in the background.

It began first with an
angel speaking to the shepherds.

And when I read
what @Desire of Ages@

that wonderful book about
the life of Christ had to say,

I don't know why it says
that the angel--His glory

was so bright that he
gave the shepherds time

for their eyes to
adjust to the light.

Those of us who
carry the news of Jesus
00:06:12.10\00:06:13.70
have to give those
who don't know Jesus

time for their eyes and their
lives to adjust to the light.

But look at how it ends.

"And suddenly
there was with the angel

a multitude of the heavenly
host praising God and saying:

and on earth peace,
goodwill toward men."

Well, it's that
time of the year,

many people are in solitude.

Many people are
struggling with difficulties.

Many people don't
know about that good news

and that goodwill that Christ
came to bring towards all men.
