Welcome back to the Creator Revealed. 00:00:03.26\00:00:05.20 We're talking today about how to share your belief 00:00:05.23\00:00:09.84 and God as our Creator. 00:00:09.87\00:00:11.41 And we have a special guest 00:00:11.44\00:00:13.07 whom I just love, Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:00:13.11\00:00:15.14 Yes. 00:00:15.18\00:00:16.51 Tom Shepherd and I go back many years. 00:00:16.54\00:00:19.61 We taught together in Nebraska 00:00:19.65\00:00:22.08 and now he teaches 00:00:22.12\00:00:24.25 in the Adventist Theological Seminary 00:00:24.29\00:00:26.92 at Andrews University in Michigan. 00:00:26.96\00:00:30.06 I bet he has on one of his signature ties today. 00:00:30.09\00:00:33.09 I bet he does as well. 00:00:33.13\00:00:35.63 You might be surprised by the style, 00:00:35.66\00:00:37.80 but it could be anything. 00:00:37.83\00:00:39.70 So welcome, welcome, Dr. Shepherd. 00:00:39.73\00:00:42.67 Thank you so much for joining us. 00:00:42.70\00:00:45.01 So we've been talking 00:00:45.04\00:00:46.37 about how to share this Doctrine of Creation 00:00:46.41\00:00:51.65 with other people, 00:00:51.68\00:00:53.01 people who don't already believe. 00:00:53.05\00:00:55.32 Now, you are a theologian and you are a pastor. 00:00:55.35\00:00:59.39 I know you have a pastor's heart. 00:00:59.42\00:01:01.86 And so I'm wondering from your perspective. 00:01:01.89\00:01:05.56 Obviously, I've just talked about it 00:01:05.59\00:01:07.40 from the perspective of a scientist. 00:01:07.43\00:01:09.76 But from the perspective of a pastor, 00:01:09.80\00:01:12.40 what are the most effective ways 00:01:12.43\00:01:16.40 of sharing the creation? 00:01:16.44\00:01:18.24 And what might be some things 00:01:18.27\00:01:20.34 that we would like to avoid doing, 00:01:20.38\00:01:23.75 if we want to be effective? 00:01:23.78\00:01:26.28 Okay. 00:01:26.31\00:01:27.82 The first thing is you never win an argument. 00:01:27.85\00:01:31.75 So it's never good to argue with people about creation. 00:01:31.79\00:01:36.59 If they don't believe, 00:01:36.62\00:01:38.36 it's not good to push it on them. 00:01:38.39\00:01:42.03 I believe that sharing creation 00:01:42.06\00:01:44.03 is actually part of sharing the gospel. 00:01:44.07\00:01:46.77 So, in fact, 00:01:46.80\00:01:48.14 that's a very natural place to begin 00:01:48.17\00:01:50.84 in sharing the gospel 00:01:50.87\00:01:52.37 because it's the beginning 00:01:52.41\00:01:54.11 of all life on this planet, in our universe. 00:01:54.14\00:01:58.88 So it depends on the situation in which I would find myself 00:01:58.91\00:02:02.72 or who I would be with, 00:02:02.75\00:02:04.32 exactly how I would approach this. 00:02:04.35\00:02:06.49 But if I gave a scenario where I was travelling. 00:02:06.52\00:02:09.96 This next week I'll be travelling 00:02:09.99\00:02:11.89 with students to Denver for professional meetings, 00:02:11.93\00:02:14.00 and maybe I'll be sitting to next to somebody. 00:02:14.03\00:02:18.27 My way of sharing the gospel with people 00:02:18.30\00:02:20.54 starts with what I call, tagging. 00:02:20.57\00:02:22.14 It's not actually from me, it's... 00:02:22.17\00:02:24.91 I heard this from somebody else. 00:02:24.94\00:02:27.11 When we were little kids, we played tag, 00:02:27.14\00:02:29.18 and it was tag when you're hit. 00:02:29.21\00:02:31.51 So in sharing the gospel in this way, 00:02:31.55\00:02:34.72 and just having a normal conversation 00:02:34.75\00:02:36.42 with somebody about who you are, 00:02:36.45\00:02:38.05 what you do, that kind of thing. 00:02:38.09\00:02:40.06 You share something 00:02:40.09\00:02:41.42 that is part of your spiritual life. 00:02:41.46\00:02:44.13 For me, it's fairly easy, I tell you, I'm a teacher, 00:02:44.16\00:02:46.49 and they say, "Oh, what do you teach?" 00:02:46.53\00:02:48.20 And I say, "Well, I teach the New Testament 00:02:48.23\00:02:50.07 in the Bible at a seminary." 00:02:50.10\00:02:52.00 I have just tagged them. 00:02:52.03\00:02:53.80 I've just told them, 00:02:53.84\00:02:55.17 "I'm a spiritual person, and does that interest you?" 00:02:55.20\00:02:59.41 So if they tag me back and they say, 00:02:59.44\00:03:01.24 "Oh, you teach New Testament, that's really interesting." 00:03:01.28\00:03:04.85 They have just said, 00:03:04.88\00:03:06.21 "I'm also spiritual person and I'd like to talk." 00:03:06.25\00:03:08.98 Now if they say, "Oh, do you play golf too?" 00:03:09.02\00:03:13.52 Then I may know 00:03:13.56\00:03:15.52 that they may not want to talk about spiritual things. 00:03:15.56\00:03:18.33 And I might tag them again, 00:03:18.36\00:03:19.69 but I'm not going to push them on that. 00:03:19.73\00:03:21.06 But let's suppose that somebody 00:03:21.10\00:03:22.56 has, you know showed an interest, 00:03:22.60\00:03:24.33 and so it comes up the subject of creation. 00:03:24.37\00:03:30.24 Of course, there are many people 00:03:30.27\00:03:31.61 who are like unbelievers, a number of unbelievers, 00:03:31.64\00:03:34.74 and how do you reach out to them? 00:03:34.78\00:03:36.24 I think one of the best ways is to share with them 00:03:36.28\00:03:40.32 the benefits of believing in creation. 00:03:40.35\00:03:43.45 Things like, 00:03:43.49\00:03:45.39 God is watching over us, God is caring for us, 00:03:45.42\00:03:48.72 that there's a clear beginning, 00:03:48.76\00:03:50.09 so there's a clear end where we're headed, 00:03:50.13\00:03:52.99 and it's going to be glorious according to the Bible. 00:03:53.03\00:03:56.26 I also believe 00:03:56.30\00:03:57.63 that sharing people 00:03:57.67\00:03:59.43 the idea of the image of God, 00:03:59.47\00:04:01.27 that we are made in His image 00:04:01.30\00:04:02.67 in the holistic anthropology in the Bible. 00:04:02.70\00:04:05.41 I mean, in simple terms, to share with people, 00:04:05.44\00:04:09.04 shares with them the benefits 00:04:09.08\00:04:10.48 of this great Doctrine of Creation. 00:04:10.51\00:04:14.28 You know, that's really interesting 00:04:14.32\00:04:16.72 because it's interesting to me to see this. 00:04:16.75\00:04:19.25 That's a very clever technique, 00:04:19.29\00:04:20.89 this tagging, tagging technique. 00:04:20.92\00:04:23.73 But I was also, you know, I was here nodding and agreeing 00:04:23.76\00:04:28.83 because of course, 00:04:28.86\00:04:30.37 I think that we do agree on a number of these things 00:04:30.40\00:04:33.90 and especially, especially on this point 00:04:33.94\00:04:36.40 of presenting the beauty of what's there, 00:04:36.44\00:04:39.34 the attractiveness of it. 00:04:39.37\00:04:40.71 Yeah. 00:04:40.74\00:04:42.08 If we make Christianity 00:04:42.11\00:04:43.45 and the idea of creation unattractive, 00:04:43.48\00:04:45.05 of course, people aren't going to want to do it. 00:04:45.08\00:04:47.62 Now I actually have another question, 00:04:47.65\00:04:50.79 it's related. 00:04:50.82\00:04:52.59 You're going to a professional meeting next week, 00:04:52.62\00:04:56.36 and 00:04:56.39\00:04:59.26 for better or for worse, 00:04:59.29\00:05:01.03 I know that there are a lot of theologians 00:05:01.06\00:05:05.03 who have quite unbiblical ideas 00:05:05.07\00:05:11.94 about the creation. 00:05:11.97\00:05:13.91 So the question that I have is, 00:05:13.94\00:05:17.01 how do you deal with people like that? 00:05:17.05\00:05:19.08 They would be spiritual people already, 00:05:19.11\00:05:22.78 so how do you deal with them? 00:05:22.82\00:05:25.02 Okay. 00:05:25.05\00:05:26.39 Of course, 00:05:26.42\00:05:27.76 I'm not going to argue with them. 00:05:27.79\00:05:29.62 If they want to share, 00:05:29.66\00:05:31.86 then I would present my position 00:05:31.89\00:05:33.73 on the creation scripture as a historical event. 00:05:33.76\00:05:37.10 Now among theologians, 00:05:37.13\00:05:38.93 the question of the historicity of the first 11 chapters 00:05:38.97\00:05:41.64 of the Book of Genesis, it's a big, a big issue 00:05:41.67\00:05:44.57 and a big debate that they go over. 00:05:44.61\00:05:49.01 But I would share 00:05:49.04\00:05:51.35 maybe some aspects of the creation story 00:05:51.38\00:05:55.15 that point towards it being not just sort of poetry, 00:05:55.18\00:05:59.39 but it being linked into history. 00:05:59.42\00:06:02.36 The Sabbath is actually one of those characteristics. 00:06:02.39\00:06:05.99 The Sabbath command 00:06:06.03\00:06:07.36 enshrines that whole idea of the creation, 00:06:07.40\00:06:10.17 and in six days 00:06:10.20\00:06:11.53 God made the heaven and the earth. 00:06:11.57\00:06:12.90 So we probably as professionals 00:06:12.93\00:06:16.60 would talk about some aspects of the text 00:06:16.64\00:06:18.94 that would go beyond 00:06:18.97\00:06:20.31 what, you know, I might share 00:06:20.34\00:06:21.91 if I was on an airplane sitting next to... 00:06:21.94\00:06:23.91 You know, just somebody 00:06:23.95\00:06:25.28 who hadn't had that kind of experience before. 00:06:25.31\00:06:27.82 What about given your expertise in the New Testament? 00:06:27.85\00:06:31.49 I think you might heard 00:06:31.52\00:06:32.85 my discussions earlier with Shelley, 00:06:32.89\00:06:35.09 about, you know, she says, 00:06:35.12\00:06:37.53 "I was a New Testament Christian." 00:06:37.56\00:06:41.96 I grew up in a New Testament church. 00:06:42.00\00:06:43.33 In a New Testament church. 00:06:43.37\00:06:44.70 So you are a professor of New Testament 00:06:44.73\00:06:49.64 there in the seminary. 00:06:49.67\00:06:53.71 Is the creation there? 00:06:53.74\00:06:56.08 Is there a starting point 00:06:56.11\00:06:58.78 that you might choose in the New Testament 00:06:58.81\00:07:01.22 instead of arguing about those first 11 chapters of Genesis 00:07:01.25\00:07:06.49 back in the Old Testament, of course? 00:07:06.52\00:07:08.86 Sure, absolutely. 00:07:08.89\00:07:10.66 The Creation doctrine is found throughout the New Testament. 00:07:10.69\00:07:16.73 I have a presentation that I gave, 00:07:16.77\00:07:18.10 if you have time I can share the whole thing, 00:07:18.13\00:07:20.20 it takes probably about at least half-an-hour 00:07:20.24\00:07:22.54 or could go on, on and on. 00:07:22.57\00:07:24.21 I'll have to work on that one day. 00:07:24.24\00:07:25.64 I'm sure it's fabulous. 00:07:25.67\00:07:27.78 Yeah, throughout many and many books 00:07:27.81\00:07:29.68 of the New Testament, 00:07:29.71\00:07:31.05 creation is this foundational kind of concept. 00:07:31.08\00:07:33.42 Let me share one 00:07:33.45\00:07:34.78 that's in the Book of Matthew Chapter 19, 00:07:34.82\00:07:38.32 Pharisees were asking Jesus, 00:07:38.35\00:07:40.42 whether it's all right to divorce. 00:07:40.46\00:07:42.49 And Jesus was very much in favor of staying married 00:07:42.52\00:07:46.59 and not getting divorced. 00:07:46.63\00:07:48.26 And the basis of his argument 00:07:48.30\00:07:49.80 was that God made male and female, and He... 00:07:49.83\00:07:53.34 The man leaves his father, his mother, 00:07:53.37\00:07:54.80 and is joined to his wife. 00:07:54.84\00:07:56.17 So Jesus took 00:07:56.20\00:07:57.54 the stories of creation as historical events, 00:07:57.57\00:08:01.71 because if it's not historical, His argument fails. 00:08:01.74\00:08:06.61 And so Matthew 19 is one of those very clear indications 00:08:06.65\00:08:10.82 that in the New Testament, 00:08:10.85\00:08:12.52 it accepts the historicity of those creation accounts. 00:08:12.55\00:08:16.02 And there's many examples like this 00:08:16.06\00:08:18.99 throughout the New Testament 00:08:19.03\00:08:20.36 that point in the same direction. 00:08:20.40\00:08:22.00 You know, one of the things that really impressed me 00:08:22.03\00:08:25.47 when I was reading through the Bible, 00:08:25.50\00:08:27.47 and I do this every now and again 00:08:27.50\00:08:29.50 is where the creation shows up. 00:08:29.54\00:08:32.34 And one of... 00:08:32.37\00:08:33.71 You know, 00:08:33.74\00:08:35.34 because I'm not really a theologian or anything, 00:08:35.38\00:08:38.91 I like those action books. 00:08:38.95\00:08:41.82 And the Book of Acts is full of all of these things, 00:08:41.85\00:08:45.15 and I was shocked to note 00:08:45.19\00:08:48.26 how often the creation is discussed there. 00:08:48.29\00:08:51.03 Yes. 00:08:51.06\00:08:52.86 It's very, very interesting where it shows up. 00:08:52.89\00:08:56.20 And, you know, when you consider... 00:08:56.23\00:08:58.07 I'm sorry, I was just going to say, 00:08:58.10\00:08:59.43 if you consider the Book of Romans, 00:08:59.47\00:09:01.67 and the whole idea of the fall and the first Adam. 00:09:01.70\00:09:06.21 I mean, the whole plan of salvation 00:09:06.24\00:09:08.08 is built around the story of creation. 00:09:08.11\00:09:11.01 Yes. 00:09:11.05\00:09:12.38 I mean, Romans is filled with the idea of creation 00:09:12.41\00:09:14.85 and the Book of Acts, as Tim had stated also. 00:09:14.88\00:09:18.99 When Paul goes and talks to the Greek philosophers in... 00:09:19.02\00:09:23.02 On Mars Hill, then he refers to creation. 00:09:23.06\00:09:26.26 And that's one of the basic parts 00:09:26.29\00:09:28.73 of his argument. 00:09:28.76\00:09:30.10 Missionaries actually find it useful 00:09:30.13\00:09:32.17 when they are going to traditional cultures 00:09:32.20\00:09:34.70 to start with the story of creation as part 00:09:34.74\00:09:37.04 of sharing the gospel because it's so foundational 00:09:37.07\00:09:41.48 that God created the world, the world went wrong, 00:09:41.51\00:09:45.18 God restores the world and the gospel. 00:09:45.21\00:09:47.08 If you don't have the basis in creation and the fall, 00:09:47.12\00:09:50.42 you don't have a reason 00:09:50.45\00:09:51.79 for the redemption that's found in Christ. 00:09:51.82\00:09:53.69 So it's all interlinked together, 00:09:53.72\00:09:56.19 these ideas of creation in scripture, 00:09:56.22\00:09:58.03 and sharing with them. 00:09:58.06\00:09:59.86 Yeah. 00:09:59.89\00:10:01.23 It's one of these things that's really very impressive 00:10:01.26\00:10:03.16 about the scriptures. 00:10:03.20\00:10:05.10 The way... 00:10:05.13\00:10:06.50 These books had many different authors 00:10:06.53\00:10:09.00 but the same inspiration and everything interlinks 00:10:09.04\00:10:12.34 in a very clear and logical way. 00:10:12.37\00:10:15.48 There isn't a different gospel in the Old Testament 00:10:15.51\00:10:17.85 than there is in New Testament. 00:10:17.88\00:10:19.21 Absolutely. 00:10:19.25\00:10:20.58 You're right. 00:10:20.62\00:10:21.95 We've always been saved by grace through faith. 00:10:21.98\00:10:23.62 Exactly. 00:10:23.65\00:10:24.99 Well, Dr. Shepherd, I want to thank you so much 00:10:25.02\00:10:27.52 for joining us. 00:10:27.56\00:10:29.29 It's been a real pleasure to see you again. 00:10:29.32\00:10:32.19 Amen! 00:10:32.23\00:10:34.80 Always good to see you, Tim and Shelley. 00:10:34.83\00:10:36.80 Give your sweetheart a hug from me. 00:10:36.83\00:10:40.00 Thank you very much. 00:10:40.04\00:10:41.37 All right. God bless. 00:10:41.40\00:10:43.20 You know, when we were talking there 00:10:43.24\00:10:44.97 about the Book of Acts, 00:10:45.01\00:10:46.37 and Paul on Mars Hill 00:10:46.41\00:10:48.08 or sometimes it's called the Areopagus, 00:10:48.11\00:10:50.91 there in Athens. 00:10:50.95\00:10:52.28 It reminds me of the time when I was with a friend, 00:10:52.31\00:10:55.45 and we were walking through Athens, 00:10:55.48\00:10:58.09 and climbed up the hill towards the acropolis there, 00:10:58.12\00:11:01.66 and we saw this big plate, bronze plate 00:11:01.69\00:11:06.43 and we started reading it, it was in Greek. 00:11:06.46\00:11:09.40 And lo and behold, it was the story, 00:11:09.43\00:11:12.67 it was the story that's laid out there, 00:11:12.70\00:11:15.64 the sermon that was given by Paul. 00:11:15.67\00:11:18.04 It was so impressive. 00:11:18.07\00:11:19.71 And right there and then, that was probably a time 00:11:19.74\00:11:23.95 when I was so profoundly struck by the fact 00:11:23.98\00:11:26.41 that he actually starts of his sermon 00:11:26.45\00:11:28.88 with all of these philosophers with... 00:11:28.92\00:11:31.62 "Hey, I'm going to introduce you 00:11:31.65\00:11:32.99 to the unknowing God, you know who He is?" 00:11:33.02\00:11:35.82 This is the creator God. 00:11:35.86\00:11:37.93 Amen. Yeah. 00:11:37.96\00:11:39.29 So then he built everything else of that. 00:11:39.33\00:11:40.90 It's quite an impressive, impressive thing. 00:11:40.93\00:11:44.70 Amen. 00:11:44.73\00:11:46.07 Again, I always go back to the idea that God had... 00:11:46.10\00:11:50.87 Christ was the lamb slain 00:11:50.91\00:11:53.51 before the foundation of the world. 00:11:53.54\00:11:55.54 So God has had a plan in mind. 00:11:55.58\00:11:58.51 He created a perfect creation, but in His foreknowledge, 00:11:58.55\00:12:02.48 He knew what was going to happen 00:12:02.52\00:12:04.02 and the sacrifice He had to make to save us. 00:12:04.05\00:12:07.62 And this is the beautiful story. 00:12:07.66\00:12:09.49 That's the gospel. 00:12:09.52\00:12:10.86 The beautiful reality 00:12:10.89\00:12:12.63 that we as Christians have to share with the world. 00:12:12.66\00:12:15.26 Amen. Amen. 00:12:15.30\00:12:16.63 And we hope 00:12:16.67\00:12:18.00 that this series has provided you 00:12:18.03\00:12:20.34 a foundation 00:12:20.37\00:12:22.07 and an understanding 00:12:22.10\00:12:23.44 that you'll get out 00:12:23.47\00:12:24.81 and share Jesus today. 00:12:24.84\00:12:26.31
