Welcome to The Creator Revealed. 00:00:30.79\00:00:32.93 My name is Tim Standish, and I'm a scientist. 00:00:32.96\00:00:36.77 One of the major questions 00:00:36.80\00:00:40.47 that get raised with me on a regular basis is, 00:00:40.50\00:00:46.41 how can you be a scientist and believe the Bible. 00:00:46.44\00:00:50.45 What's going on there 00:00:50.48\00:00:52.65 and that is what we are going to examine a little bit 00:00:52.68\00:00:56.79 in this particular episode of The Creator Revealed. 00:00:56.82\00:01:00.96 Well, I'm Shelley Quinn, 00:01:00.99\00:01:02.52 and we're so glad that you're joining us, 00:01:02.56\00:01:05.39 and it is wonderful to be with someone 00:01:05.43\00:01:08.76 who have so much education 00:01:08.80\00:01:11.23 and experience in science and yet, 00:01:11.27\00:01:14.04 who is a Bible believing six-day creationist. 00:01:14.07\00:01:19.71 So we look forward to this episode. 00:01:19.74\00:01:24.88 Sometimes I respond to that question with... 00:01:24.91\00:01:29.15 Well, why wouldn't I believe the Bible? 00:01:29.18\00:01:32.05 The Bible is a book about reality 00:01:32.09\00:01:34.22 and as a scientist, 00:01:34.26\00:01:35.86 hey, reality that's what I'm interested in. 00:01:35.89\00:01:39.53 You know, I just wanna comment on that 00:01:39.56\00:01:41.30 'cause so many people 00:01:41.33\00:01:42.66 don't see the reality of it all but there is... 00:01:42.70\00:01:46.30 You know, when you look at the internal evidence 00:01:46.33\00:01:50.87 as far as the cohesiveness of the story 00:01:50.91\00:01:53.84 when you look at the external evidence, 00:01:53.88\00:01:56.88 when you look at the Dead Sea Scrolls, 00:01:56.91\00:01:59.41 when you look what the archaeologists 00:01:59.45\00:02:02.68 are uncovering that continually prove 00:02:02.72\00:02:05.22 there's so much that proves that, that the Bible is real. 00:02:05.25\00:02:09.42 Well, yes, you know, the Bible presents itself 00:02:09.46\00:02:13.96 as a book about reality, and a record of history. 00:02:14.00\00:02:17.83 You know, when we talk about the creation account 00:02:17.87\00:02:21.80 that's given there, it is laid out 00:02:21.84\00:02:24.51 just like the rest of the history 00:02:24.54\00:02:26.74 in the Bible. 00:02:26.78\00:02:28.11 And as you pointed out, 00:02:28.14\00:02:29.48 the science of archaeology has certainly 00:02:29.51\00:02:33.48 presented us with pretty amazing evidence. 00:02:33.52\00:02:38.35 That history is very, very reliable. 00:02:38.39\00:02:43.46 And there's more than that, 00:02:43.49\00:02:46.59 this history that's given in Scripture is... 00:02:46.63\00:02:51.13 It is hopeful history, 00:02:51.17\00:02:53.27 it's not history 00:02:53.30\00:02:56.71 that you wouldn't want to believe, 00:02:56.74\00:02:58.17 it's not gloom and doom or something, 00:02:58.21\00:03:00.74 it's not saying, we're all going to die 00:03:00.78\00:03:02.24 and that'll be the end 00:03:02.28\00:03:03.68 or anything like that. 00:03:03.71\00:03:05.05 There is this beautiful history that's laid out, 00:03:05.08\00:03:07.25 the past, the present, and the future that's there. 00:03:07.28\00:03:11.75 But it's not a kind of airy-fairy 00:03:11.79\00:03:14.72 theological book really, 00:03:14.76\00:03:17.79 even though we tend to think about it that way. 00:03:17.83\00:03:20.10 No, it's about the facts, 00:03:20.13\00:03:21.76 it's about what people saw happen, 00:03:21.80\00:03:23.57 it's a record of God's action throughout history, 00:03:23.60\00:03:28.00 you can certainly think about it that way. 00:03:28.04\00:03:29.64 And by the way, 00:03:29.67\00:03:31.01 I would certainly be happy 00:03:31.04\00:03:33.78 to believe other historical sources. 00:03:33.81\00:03:36.71 For example, if I went to Egypt, 00:03:36.75\00:03:38.25 and there was a pyramid with something that said, 00:03:38.28\00:03:40.35 I the Pharaoh, who built this, did these great things. 00:03:40.38\00:03:43.85 I tend to believe that, 00:03:43.89\00:03:45.42 well, why would I treat the Bible 00:03:45.45\00:03:47.76 as a less reliable historical resource 00:03:47.79\00:03:50.49 than some Pharaoh bragging about himself? 00:03:50.53\00:03:53.09 Well, let's launch into this, 00:03:53.13\00:03:54.56 and I want to start to illustrate this point 00:03:54.60\00:03:57.13 with 1 John 1:1-3. 00:03:57.17\00:04:00.27 Let's just look at what's being said here 00:04:00.30\00:04:02.40 by the Apostle John. 00:04:02.44\00:04:03.77 He says, "That which was from the beginning, 00:04:03.81\00:04:06.81 which we have heard, 00:04:06.84\00:04:08.18 which we have seen with our eyes, 00:04:08.21\00:04:10.18 which we have looked upon with our hands, 00:04:10.21\00:04:13.55 sorry, looked upon and our hands have handled, 00:04:13.58\00:04:16.52 concerning the Word of life- the life was manifested, 00:04:16.55\00:04:20.02 and we have seen, and bear witness, 00:04:20.06\00:04:22.82 and declare to you that eternal life 00:04:22.86\00:04:25.43 which was with the Father and was manifested to us, 00:04:25.46\00:04:29.16 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, 00:04:29.20\00:04:34.40 that you also may have fellowship with us, 00:04:34.44\00:04:36.64 and truly our fellowship is with the Father 00:04:36.67\00:04:40.01 and with His Son Jesus Christ." 00:04:40.04\00:04:43.01 Eyewitness account. Eyewitness account. 00:04:43.04\00:04:45.71 Science is about empirical evidence 00:04:45.75\00:04:48.48 or empirical data, 00:04:48.52\00:04:49.92 stuff that has been observed with our senses 00:04:49.95\00:04:52.39 what we have seen, what we have heard, 00:04:52.42\00:04:55.16 science is built off that foundation. 00:04:55.19\00:04:59.49 The Bible is built off exactly the same foundation. 00:04:59.53\00:05:04.97 People say that Bible isn't a book of science. 00:05:05.00\00:05:07.00 Well, why isn't it? 00:05:07.04\00:05:08.67 It's about empirical observation 00:05:08.70\00:05:11.27 and certainly that is true 00:05:11.31\00:05:12.64 when it comes to the case of the situation 00:05:12.67\00:05:15.48 with Jesus Christ and the resurrection and so on. 00:05:15.51\00:05:17.91 I've highlighted these different words 00:05:17.95\00:05:21.82 on the screen here, 00:05:21.85\00:05:23.49 all these words that have to do with our empirical senses. 00:05:23.52\00:05:29.42 Yeah, John is really into this. 00:05:29.46\00:05:31.83 I, John saw things here, in the Revelation, 00:05:31.86\00:05:35.70 that's the Bible. 00:05:35.73\00:05:37.53 Now, 00:05:37.57\00:05:38.97 I want to point out 00:05:39.00\00:05:40.84 that not all belief systems are like this, 00:05:40.87\00:05:44.77 and I want to be careful about it. 00:05:44.81\00:05:46.21 This is not to put other belief systems down. 00:05:46.24\00:05:50.41 I'm just saying, 00:05:50.45\00:05:51.78 other belief systems are built off 00:05:51.81\00:05:53.62 a different understanding of reality. 00:05:53.65\00:05:56.75 So I want to give you this example, 00:05:56.79\00:06:00.22 from the Hindu faith, 00:06:00.26\00:06:02.62 this is in one of the important books 00:06:02.66\00:06:06.63 for Hindus that says, 00:06:06.66\00:06:08.23 "Just as the world 00:06:08.26\00:06:10.40 and its creation 00:06:10.43\00:06:12.57 are mere appearances, 00:06:12.60\00:06:15.97 a moment and an epoch 00:06:16.00\00:06:18.57 are also imaginary, not real." 00:06:18.61\00:06:22.41 You see in this particular view of things, 00:06:22.44\00:06:25.41 what we take in through our senses 00:06:25.45\00:06:26.88 is an illusion. 00:06:26.92\00:06:28.88 But in the Christian faith, we say no, no, no. 00:06:28.92\00:06:32.42 What we take in through our senses 00:06:32.45\00:06:35.02 is a reliable. 00:06:35.06\00:06:39.79 That's reliable information about the world 00:06:39.83\00:06:43.10 in which we live. 00:06:43.13\00:06:44.93 Very, very different things. 00:06:44.97\00:06:46.30 Can you see 00:06:46.33\00:06:47.67 why it is that science 00:06:47.70\00:06:52.37 was built off 00:06:52.41\00:06:54.01 this kind of foundational understanding 00:06:54.04\00:06:57.35 that Christians have. 00:06:57.38\00:06:59.21 I don't want to say that because people were Christians, 00:06:59.25\00:07:01.68 they became scientists. 00:07:01.72\00:07:03.05 But certainly Christianity provides that 00:07:03.08\00:07:06.62 metaphysical foundation 00:07:06.65\00:07:09.26 that is necessary to do science. 00:07:09.29\00:07:10.89 An intangible evidence. 00:07:10.93\00:07:13.13 Yeah. Evidences. 00:07:13.16\00:07:14.50 So here's an example, 00:07:14.53\00:07:15.86 Francis Bacon 00:07:15.90\00:07:17.23 is one of the founders of modern science 00:07:17.27\00:07:20.04 and he wrote this, he said, 00:07:20.07\00:07:21.57 "To conclude, therefore, let no man 00:07:21.60\00:07:25.07 out of weak conceit of sobriety, 00:07:25.11\00:07:28.04 or an ill-applied moderation, 00:07:28.08\00:07:31.35 think or maintain, that a man can search too far 00:07:31.38\00:07:34.48 or be too well studied in the book of God's word, 00:07:34.52\00:07:38.85 or in the book of God's works, 00:07:38.89\00:07:43.19 divinity or philosophy, 00:07:43.22\00:07:46.23 but rather let man endeavor 00:07:46.26\00:07:49.30 an endless progress or proficience in both." 00:07:49.33\00:07:53.34 Amen! 00:07:53.37\00:07:55.27 No, this is old English, isn't it? 00:07:55.30\00:07:56.81 Yeah. 00:07:56.84\00:07:58.17 Francis Bacon lived hundreds of years ago, 00:07:58.21\00:07:59.91 but he laid out this philosophical foundation 00:07:59.94\00:08:02.98 that sort of moved in the direction then 00:08:03.01\00:08:05.48 of the way we understand science today. 00:08:05.51\00:08:08.38 You can see, he is not discounting the Bible, 00:08:08.42\00:08:13.19 or the creation, the nature itself. 00:08:13.22\00:08:17.49 He's saying, hey, these things go together in some way 00:08:17.53\00:08:20.10 and we can understand that we should do. 00:08:20.13\00:08:22.70 Oh! Kepler, 00:08:22.73\00:08:25.40 one of the fathers of modern astronomy. 00:08:25.43\00:08:29.57 He was a priest. 00:08:29.60\00:08:32.21 He was a priest, basically. 00:08:32.24\00:08:34.84 I believe he was Catholic. Okay. 00:08:34.88\00:08:38.61 And so he wrote, 00:08:38.65\00:08:41.38 "These laws are within the grasp 00:08:41.42\00:08:43.62 of the human mind, 00:08:43.65\00:08:45.39 God wanted us to recognize them 00:08:45.42\00:08:47.62 by creating us after his own image 00:08:47.66\00:08:50.63 so that we could share his own thoughts." 00:08:50.66\00:08:53.80 So as he was 00:08:53.83\00:08:55.86 sort of understanding these things, 00:08:55.90\00:08:57.97 figuring out all these mathematical relationships 00:08:58.00\00:09:00.40 that describe what was going on in the heavens. 00:09:00.44\00:09:04.14 He's certainly not saying 00:09:04.17\00:09:05.51 and there is no God, or anything like that, 00:09:05.54\00:09:07.78 or making up arbitrary rules about, 00:09:07.81\00:09:10.05 well, we can't bring God into things. 00:09:10.08\00:09:12.08 The opposite is true. 00:09:12.11\00:09:13.72 It was his understanding of God 00:09:13.75\00:09:16.18 that prompted him to move in that direction. 00:09:16.22\00:09:18.72 He didn't think, oh, this is all just an illusion. 00:09:18.75\00:09:20.86 So I need to be thinking about other things, 00:09:20.89\00:09:22.56 other things are more important. 00:09:22.59\00:09:24.43 He's saying no, this is important, 00:09:24.46\00:09:25.79 let's understand it, 00:09:25.83\00:09:27.16 it tells us something about God. 00:09:27.20\00:09:28.53 In fact, he even goes on and says, 00:09:28.56\00:09:30.03 we astronomers are priests of the highest God 00:09:30.07\00:09:33.23 in regard to the book of nature. 00:09:33.27\00:09:35.34 Good quote. 00:09:35.37\00:09:36.71 Yeah. 00:09:36.74\00:09:38.44 These founders of modern science 00:09:38.47\00:09:41.21 were building off their Christian understanding. 00:09:41.24\00:09:44.25 Why would I not do the same thing today? 00:09:44.28\00:09:46.65 These were great, 00:09:46.68\00:09:48.15 great thinkers, great men indeed. 00:09:48.18\00:09:51.12 Now, I want to contrast that 00:09:51.15\00:09:53.05 with this view that people think is modern. 00:09:53.09\00:09:55.96 And the example I'm going to use 00:09:55.99\00:09:57.33 is Jacques Monad, he is a... 00:09:57.36\00:09:59.86 Well, he is a Nobel Prize winner 00:09:59.89\00:10:01.90 and he wrote this, 00:10:01.93\00:10:03.90 "Chance alone is at the source of every innovation 00:10:03.93\00:10:08.00 of all creation in the biosphere." 00:10:08.04\00:10:11.37 So he's saying, it's not God, it's chance. 00:10:11.41\00:10:14.41 "Pure chance, absolutely free but blind, 00:10:14.44\00:10:19.28 at the very root 00:10:19.31\00:10:20.65 of the stupendous edifice of evolution: 00:10:20.68\00:10:25.29 this central concept of modern biology 00:10:25.32\00:10:28.86 is no longer one among other possible 00:10:28.89\00:10:32.03 or even conceivable hypotheses. 00:10:32.06\00:10:34.73 It is today the sole conceivable hypothesis." 00:10:34.76\00:10:39.13 And, you know, people look at that 00:10:39.17\00:10:40.50 and they say, well, that's modern science. 00:10:40.54\00:10:43.47 But it's not. It's ancient philosophy. 00:10:43.51\00:10:46.27 This is not new. 00:10:46.31\00:10:48.34 This is not what modern science grew out of. 00:10:48.38\00:10:51.75 In fact, we can go back and read Cicero, 00:10:51.78\00:10:54.85 this Roman author 00:10:54.88\00:10:56.22 before the time of Christ and Cicero 00:10:56.25\00:10:58.25 wrote a book called De Natura Deorum, 00:10:58.29\00:11:00.89 which means on the nature of the gods. 00:11:00.92\00:11:02.99 It's a dialogue 00:11:03.02\00:11:04.36 between different people with different beliefs 00:11:04.39\00:11:07.06 about the gods in the Pantheon 00:11:07.10\00:11:09.76 that were worshiped by Romans and others. 00:11:09.80\00:11:12.53 And he has here, 00:11:12.57\00:11:14.74 one of these philosophical views, 00:11:14.77\00:11:17.37 the Epicurean view, 00:11:17.41\00:11:19.11 and this is what the Epicurean philosopher says, 00:11:19.14\00:11:21.34 he says, "For he who taught us all the rest," 00:11:21.38\00:11:23.78 that's the guy named Epicurus, 00:11:23.81\00:11:25.85 "has also taught us 00:11:25.88\00:11:27.22 that the world was made by nature, 00:11:27.25\00:11:30.25 without needing an artificer to construct it, 00:11:30.29\00:11:33.05 and that the act of creation, which according to you 00:11:33.09\00:11:36.26 cannot be performed without divine skill, 00:11:36.29\00:11:39.03 is so easy, that nature will create, is creating 00:11:39.06\00:11:42.16 and has created worlds without number. 00:11:42.20\00:11:45.00 You on the contrary cannot see how nature can achieve all this 00:11:45.03\00:11:48.57 without the aid of some intelligence." 00:11:48.60\00:11:51.17 Can you see, go back 2000 years, 00:11:51.21\00:11:53.38 people were saying the same thing. 00:11:53.41\00:11:54.74 It wasn't because science compelled them to, 00:11:54.78\00:11:56.61 this is their philosophy. 00:11:56.64\00:11:58.65 Yes. Okay. 00:11:58.68\00:12:00.02 And you know, I have to say that 00:12:00.05\00:12:01.38 it seems to me that as we advance, 00:12:01.42\00:12:04.39 I would think that people would be changing their mind. 00:12:04.42\00:12:07.82 Because the more science 00:12:07.86\00:12:11.46 understands as they gain a greater understanding, 00:12:11.49\00:12:15.46 the more complicated 00:12:15.50\00:12:16.97 we see that things are, perhaps they didn't understood. 00:12:17.00\00:12:18.90 The more wonderful it is. 00:12:18.93\00:12:20.57 Yes, I mean, and you see 00:12:20.60\00:12:23.07 it had to be by intelligent design. 00:12:23.10\00:12:25.24 The Bible never points us away from the evidence, 00:12:25.27\00:12:28.58 never does that. 00:12:28.61\00:12:29.94 I love this text in Hebrews 12:1, 00:12:29.98\00:12:33.21 "Therefore we also 00:12:33.25\00:12:34.82 since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, 00:12:34.85\00:12:39.39 let us lay aside every weight, 00:12:39.42\00:12:41.42 and the sin which also easily ensnares us, 00:12:41.46\00:12:44.73 and let us run with endurance the race 00:12:44.76\00:12:47.43 that is set before us." 00:12:47.46\00:12:48.96 This is a beautiful, beautiful thought. 00:12:49.00\00:12:52.67 We are not believing by blind faith. 00:12:52.70\00:12:57.51 The witnesses are out there. 00:12:57.54\00:12:59.07 We have the witness that's recorded in Scripture, 00:12:59.11\00:13:03.04 we have the witness in the creation 00:13:03.08\00:13:06.48 that testifies to this wonderful Creator, God, 00:13:06.51\00:13:11.15 who, amazingly enough, 00:13:11.19\00:13:13.52 loves us and cares about his wayward creation. 00:13:13.56\00:13:17.96 So what can we... 00:13:17.99\00:13:19.59 What's revealed about this? 00:13:19.63\00:13:21.20 Well, "The creator is revealed in the biblical worldview 00:13:21.23\00:13:24.97 that serves as the foundation of science. 00:13:25.00\00:13:27.97 His value of logic 00:13:28.00\00:13:30.21 is clear in the logical way by which nature works. 00:13:30.24\00:13:34.18 His value of our senses is clearly revealed 00:13:34.21\00:13:38.15 in the accuracy 00:13:38.18\00:13:39.81 with which we can gather empirical data." 00:13:39.85\00:13:44.22 He wants us to go out there and look at 00:13:44.25\00:13:47.36 and understand this creation, 00:13:47.39\00:13:51.23 and we can do it through scientific study. 00:13:51.26\00:13:55.60 Amen and amen. 00:13:55.63\00:13:56.97 And Romans 1:20 says that, "God's invisible attributes, 00:13:57.00\00:14:01.74 the things about God with which we cannot see 00:14:01.77\00:14:04.61 with our own my eyes 00:14:04.64\00:14:06.81 have been revealed in the things 00:14:06.84\00:14:09.18 that He has created." 00:14:09.21\00:14:10.71 So the Creator is revealed in His creation. 00:14:10.75\00:14:14.12 Please stay tuned, 00:14:14.15\00:14:15.48 we'll be back in just a moment with a special guest. 00:14:15.52\00:14:17.79
