Welcome back to the Creator Revealed. 00:00:03.93\00:00:06.37 Today we've been talking about natural evil 00:00:06.40\00:00:10.01 and we're going to plumb the depths of that 00:00:10.04\00:00:12.97 just a little more with the special guest. 00:00:13.01\00:00:15.61 It's a pretty deep topic. Yes. 00:00:15.64\00:00:17.81 The guest that we're going to speak 00:00:17.85\00:00:19.18 with is Dr. Ronny Nalin. 00:00:19.21\00:00:21.85 Dr. Nalin is my colleague. 00:00:21.88\00:00:23.22 In fact, his office is right next to mine 00:00:23.25\00:00:25.75 at the Geoscience Research Institute. 00:00:25.79\00:00:28.02 His PhD is in geology. 00:00:28.06\00:00:30.43 But he has done a lot of thinking 00:00:30.46\00:00:33.40 about what we call the problem of evil 00:00:33.43\00:00:37.80 because as you know, 00:00:37.83\00:00:39.17 at the Geoscience Research Institute, 00:00:39.20\00:00:40.70 we are interested in this relationship 00:00:40.74\00:00:43.61 between science and faith. 00:00:43.64\00:00:46.74 So I'm delighted to have Dr. Nalin here with us. 00:00:46.78\00:00:50.81 And I want to start out by actually asking the question 00:00:50.85\00:00:56.69 that bothers me and I'm guessing 00:00:56.72\00:00:59.25 most other people which is, 00:00:59.29\00:01:01.56 okay, we know that according to the Bible, 00:01:01.59\00:01:05.59 death and suffering entered the world 00:01:05.63\00:01:07.76 because of man's sin. 00:01:07.80\00:01:10.17 But just because Adam sinned, why should animals suffer. 00:01:10.20\00:01:16.20 You know, I talked about my dog. 00:01:16.24\00:01:18.77 Why did my dog have to die because Adam chose to sin? 00:01:18.81\00:01:24.68 And that's a good question, Tim. 00:01:24.71\00:01:26.58 And it's a question that I think goes even beyond 00:01:26.61\00:01:31.02 the realm of the animals or other living beings. 00:01:31.05\00:01:35.22 It seems that there are imbalances 00:01:35.26\00:01:37.33 in the earth as a whole, 00:01:37.36\00:01:38.69 we experience events that are very troublesome 00:01:38.73\00:01:43.37 because they can bring that. 00:01:43.40\00:01:45.53 We could say that the whole system here on earth 00:01:45.57\00:01:49.60 brings pain and there are events 00:01:49.64\00:01:52.84 that are very hazardous 00:01:52.87\00:01:54.24 so it even goes beyond sickness or disease. 00:01:54.28\00:01:57.78 It is a dangerous world. 00:01:57.81\00:01:59.51 Why is it that our world should become dangerous 00:01:59.55\00:02:03.32 because of our mistakes? 00:02:03.35\00:02:05.39 And I think my way of reading these 00:02:05.42\00:02:07.79 is to see the system as an integrated system. 00:02:07.82\00:02:13.40 There are many different components 00:02:13.43\00:02:14.96 that are linked together. 00:02:15.00\00:02:16.56 And we are part of this system. 00:02:16.60\00:02:19.13 In fact, in Genesis it is said that, 00:02:19.17\00:02:22.00 "We were given dominion over this system." 00:02:22.04\00:02:25.44 And dominion means that we have a very intense relationship 00:02:25.47\00:02:29.84 with the rest of the creation. 00:02:29.88\00:02:31.65 So by our own choices, 00:02:31.68\00:02:33.28 we can affect the rest of the creation, 00:02:33.31\00:02:35.92 which is quite a humbling thought 00:02:35.95\00:02:37.59 if you think about it. 00:02:37.62\00:02:40.56 Think that you, your choices can have an effect 00:02:40.59\00:02:45.06 on what occurs in the world around us 00:02:45.09\00:02:47.33 and I think this is still true. 00:02:47.36\00:02:49.80 You know, in my area of study, which is in biology, 00:02:49.83\00:02:55.04 certainly this is something 00:02:55.07\00:02:56.40 that we spend a lot of time thinking about, 00:02:56.44\00:02:59.71 the impact that human beings have directly 00:02:59.74\00:03:03.28 on the rest of the creation is something 00:03:03.31\00:03:04.85 that we do have at least some limited control over. 00:03:04.88\00:03:08.35 And so when you referred to it being a dangerous world, 00:03:08.38\00:03:13.29 you're a geologist. 00:03:13.32\00:03:14.66 So what would be some examples of the danger out there? 00:03:14.69\00:03:17.56 I'm thinking of earthquakes but... 00:03:17.59\00:03:22.10 Yeah, I mean the classic ones are earthquakes, 00:03:22.13\00:03:25.73 volcanic activity, 00:03:25.77\00:03:27.20 and obviously also climate related events, 00:03:27.24\00:03:31.37 so hurricanes or floodings. 00:03:31.41\00:03:34.44 Floodings are actually one of the most dangerous. 00:03:34.48\00:03:38.11 So one could say, at this scale how can human decision 00:03:38.15\00:03:43.08 impact these kind of events? 00:03:43.12\00:03:45.82 And I would agree with those who are a little skeptical, 00:03:45.85\00:03:48.86 there are some aspects 00:03:48.89\00:03:50.93 that where we do have incredible effects. 00:03:50.96\00:03:55.33 For example, flooding can be the result of mismanagement 00:03:55.36\00:04:00.24 of water resources. 00:04:00.27\00:04:03.00 But when it comes to earthquakes, 00:04:03.04\00:04:04.97 for example, well, there are some earthquakes 00:04:05.01\00:04:07.51 that can be generated by activities of humans. 00:04:07.54\00:04:13.38 There's some link that has been established 00:04:13.42\00:04:15.38 with fracking and some earthquakes. 00:04:15.42\00:04:19.45 But in general, earthquakes are related 00:04:19.49\00:04:22.36 to the motion of plate. 00:04:22.39\00:04:24.29 So it's not like we can move the crust of the earth 00:04:24.33\00:04:28.16 or have an effect at that scale. 00:04:28.20\00:04:29.96 So the discussion then becomes at a greater level. 00:04:30.00\00:04:33.77 we start to think, why is it that God 00:04:33.80\00:04:37.41 allows for these things to occur? 00:04:37.44\00:04:39.81 Why did God allow... 00:04:39.84\00:04:41.18 Why do we call them acts of God when they happen? 00:04:41.21\00:04:45.21 Yeah, it means that in some ways, 00:04:45.25\00:04:48.18 God warrants the possibility for the system 00:04:48.22\00:04:52.75 to be in this way. 00:04:52.79\00:04:54.42 And so I do believe that we find also in the Bible 00:04:54.46\00:04:59.13 some facts that point in that direction by saying, 00:04:59.16\00:05:01.90 for example, that the sun rises on the evil 00:05:01.93\00:05:05.17 and the good or that God 00:05:05.20\00:05:07.27 sends rain on the righteous and unrighteous, 00:05:07.30\00:05:09.10 what does that mean? 00:05:09.14\00:05:10.47 It means that 00:05:10.51\00:05:11.84 God maintains the integrity of a sinful world. 00:05:11.87\00:05:15.84 So these things can happen. 00:05:15.88\00:05:17.68 And God in a sense, allows them to happen, 00:05:17.71\00:05:20.95 not that he is the source of them necessarily. 00:05:20.98\00:05:23.35 But why would he allow for a space 00:05:23.39\00:05:26.39 to exist where these things can happen, 00:05:26.42\00:05:28.42 and this for me can only be explained 00:05:28.46\00:05:31.19 if we put it in the context of this great cosmic conflict 00:05:31.23\00:05:35.53 between good and evil, 00:05:35.56\00:05:37.33 where God has to allow for sin to express itself. 00:05:37.37\00:05:42.74 Sin has to be expressed in a physical space. 00:05:42.77\00:05:46.37 If there is no physical space, if there's no possibility, 00:05:46.41\00:05:50.01 or humans to bring their choices 00:05:50.05\00:05:53.62 to their conclusions 00:05:53.65\00:05:54.98 are the consequences of their choices, 00:05:55.02\00:05:56.85 then you wouldn't see the meaning of what sin is 00:05:56.89\00:06:01.72 in the very end. 00:06:01.76\00:06:03.56 So what you're saying basically is if we didn't see 00:06:03.59\00:06:08.26 the natural consequences of sin actually play themselves out. 00:06:08.30\00:06:11.90 Why would we believe it was bad? 00:06:11.93\00:06:14.14 Why would it be evil? 00:06:14.17\00:06:16.24 You know, if sin had absolutely no consequences. 00:06:16.27\00:06:20.58 And we still have these difficulties 00:06:20.61\00:06:23.18 in our everyday life. 00:06:23.21\00:06:24.95 It's hard to understand what is good and what is evil. 00:06:24.98\00:06:28.75 It's very hard. 00:06:28.78\00:06:30.12 You know, one of the things that I really struggle with 00:06:30.15\00:06:33.09 is this business of blessings falling on the good 00:06:33.12\00:06:37.63 and on the evil. 00:06:37.66\00:06:39.43 But also that the consequences of evil 00:06:39.46\00:06:43.83 falling on the good people as well, 00:06:43.87\00:06:46.67 because it's so intrinsic to our nature 00:06:46.70\00:06:51.01 to say that is unjust. 00:06:51.04\00:06:53.14 Those who are righteous should not have to suffer. 00:06:53.17\00:06:58.58 But that is the nature of evil. Yeah. 00:06:58.61\00:07:01.75 So. 00:07:01.78\00:07:03.12 Yeah, I think that is also one of the reason 00:07:03.15\00:07:06.65 why I love the biblical narrative, why? 00:07:06.69\00:07:10.99 Because the Bible is trying to tell us, 00:07:11.03\00:07:13.60 God does not look and does not like evil. 00:07:13.63\00:07:17.43 God is for good. 00:07:17.47\00:07:18.97 And so what we experienced today is an anomaly. 00:07:19.00\00:07:22.07 So the biblical narrative 00:07:22.10\00:07:23.47 is not a narrative of progressive growth 00:07:23.51\00:07:26.34 and, you know, finding their way 00:07:26.37\00:07:30.15 through the hardness of life 00:07:30.18\00:07:32.18 and think God started things this way 00:07:32.21\00:07:35.18 because it was the only possible way. 00:07:35.22\00:07:37.52 So evil, well, it doesn't mean towards a good end, 00:07:37.55\00:07:41.49 so evil becomes the instrument that God uses to bring about 00:07:41.52\00:07:46.36 new possibilities and ultimately goodness, 00:07:46.39\00:07:49.20 that's not the biblical story. 00:07:49.23\00:07:51.17 The biblical story starts with something very good 00:07:51.20\00:07:55.30 and then all. 00:07:55.34\00:07:56.97 So for me the concept of a foe from a good creation 00:07:57.01\00:08:00.48 is very crucial because then I can side 00:08:00.51\00:08:03.58 on God's side and say, yes indeed 00:08:03.61\00:08:06.65 what I am seeing today, what I am experiencing today 00:08:06.68\00:08:09.62 is not part of God's original plan. 00:08:09.65\00:08:12.19 Is not how He designed the creation, 00:08:12.22\00:08:14.86 is not the way in which He wants us to live. 00:08:14.89\00:08:17.63 You know, when I think about it, 00:08:17.66\00:08:19.13 the way I think about it, 00:08:19.16\00:08:20.50 Ronny, is that when God created everything, 00:08:20.53\00:08:23.06 it was very good. 00:08:23.10\00:08:24.43 And he wanted to when he gave dominion to mankind, 00:08:24.47\00:08:29.67 it was to be exercised in covenantal love. 00:08:29.70\00:08:34.38 So when the fall happened, it wasn't just a moral fall, 00:08:34.41\00:08:38.68 it was a governmental fall, 00:08:38.71\00:08:40.92 because He passed it over to whom? 00:08:40.95\00:08:44.09 It was like a coup d'état. 00:08:44.12\00:08:45.45 Yeah, He handed the keys basically to Satan. 00:08:45.49\00:08:48.02 So that's the ruler of the error 00:08:48.06\00:08:51.53 depends on the error. 00:08:51.56\00:08:52.89 You know what else, Ronny, 00:08:52.93\00:08:54.26 that what you were saying really brought to mind 00:08:54.30\00:08:57.00 our discussion in another episode of theistic evolution, 00:08:57.03\00:09:00.40 where people are saying, hey, this suffering, 00:09:00.44\00:09:04.41 this death, this struggle, that is the plan 00:09:04.44\00:09:08.64 and it's interesting how the Bible sort of points 00:09:08.68\00:09:14.32 in precisely the opposite direction... 00:09:14.35\00:09:17.42 That's the consequence. When it comes to that. 00:09:17.45\00:09:20.82 Yeah, some critics say well, you still have to explain 00:09:20.86\00:09:24.13 why God allows for all these evil to exist 00:09:24.16\00:09:27.50 after the fall, 00:09:27.53\00:09:28.86 couldn't He shorten this or couldn't He intervene 00:09:28.90\00:09:31.37 to mitigate some of these consequences. 00:09:31.40\00:09:33.94 So still there is an argument there. 00:09:33.97\00:09:35.80 But what I think is the crucial difference is that, 00:09:35.84\00:09:39.54 it is not the way that God has designed 00:09:39.57\00:09:43.85 for the creation to be. 00:09:43.88\00:09:46.21 That's the key difference. 00:09:46.25\00:09:47.95 God has not decided to make the world in this way. 00:09:47.98\00:09:52.19 The model that we adopt is a model 00:09:52.22\00:09:54.16 where that is not part of the picture. 00:09:54.19\00:09:57.69 It came in later. 00:09:57.73\00:09:59.19 Well, in addition to that, what I love about it 00:09:59.23\00:10:01.60 is that the plan of salvation was also in place 00:10:01.63\00:10:05.93 at the foundation of the world that was there. 00:10:05.97\00:10:09.00 So God doesn't prevent us from doing evil 00:10:09.04\00:10:12.84 so then we don't have freedom of choice. 00:10:12.87\00:10:15.58 God provides that freedom of choice. 00:10:15.61\00:10:18.65 We exercise it, 00:10:18.68\00:10:20.05 but God has chosen to redeem us anyway. 00:10:20.08\00:10:24.15 He has a plan. Yes. 00:10:24.19\00:10:25.62 And time didn't exist before He created the earth. 00:10:25.65\00:10:28.92 And when we think about it, the Bible says 00:10:28.96\00:10:31.13 that a day is like 1,000 years 00:10:31.16\00:10:33.29 or 1,000 years is like a day to the Lord. 00:10:33.33\00:10:35.96 So it may seem long for us, but to God, 00:10:36.00\00:10:40.50 it's just kind of, it's a very short time 00:10:40.54\00:10:43.51 but we have to see it work out so that we know Nahum... 00:10:43.54\00:10:49.98 What is it, Nahum 1:9 says that, 00:10:50.01\00:10:52.75 "Evil will never rise again." 00:10:52.78\00:10:54.95 By the time we see 00:10:54.98\00:10:56.32 what the consequences of evil are. 00:10:56.35\00:10:57.99 We've done the experiment. We've done the experiment. 00:10:58.02\00:11:00.02 We'll see the outcome. 00:11:00.06\00:11:01.72 There is this concept of conflict 00:11:01.76\00:11:04.89 that is very important for me. 00:11:04.93\00:11:06.90 This concept of resistance sort of a battle 00:11:06.93\00:11:11.83 and it's important 00:11:11.87\00:11:13.20 because we can choose to be on God's side. 00:11:13.23\00:11:15.97 And we feel He is on our side, He is not on the against us, 00:11:16.00\00:11:20.18 He is not going after us, He is not punishing us, 00:11:20.21\00:11:22.54 He is active in the creation or good 00:11:22.58\00:11:25.71 and, you know, what I like about this concept 00:11:25.75\00:11:27.52 that it has very practical implications. 00:11:27.55\00:11:30.35 Today, even in a fallen world we can choose 00:11:30.39\00:11:34.62 when it comes to natural evil, which side we want to be on. 00:11:34.66\00:11:38.96 In fact, even a geologist can work to mitigate hazards. 00:11:38.99\00:11:44.33 Natural hazards are not random. They are not mysterious. 00:11:44.37\00:11:49.27 These things occur for very specific reasons 00:11:49.30\00:11:51.97 in very specific places and we can study them, 00:11:52.01\00:11:55.34 we can try to understand them better, 00:11:55.38\00:11:57.68 and in so doing I think we are siding with God 00:11:57.71\00:12:01.38 in trying to be the instruments, 00:12:01.42\00:12:03.22 the hands that bring about some goodness 00:12:03.25\00:12:06.25 into this fallen world. 00:12:06.29\00:12:07.72 And certainly siding with God is the way that we want to go. 00:12:07.76\00:12:11.26 I want to thank you so much for joining us, Dr. Nalin. 00:12:11.29\00:12:15.26 And well, you know, the interesting thing to me 00:12:15.30\00:12:19.13 is even with all of this evil that we do see in the world, 00:12:19.17\00:12:25.07 even with all of that, 00:12:25.11\00:12:27.18 there is hope that the Bible gives 00:12:27.21\00:12:30.75 we are not alone. 00:12:30.78\00:12:32.91 We're not without hope. 00:12:32.95\00:12:34.55 We have this plan of salvation. 00:12:34.58\00:12:38.85 Yes, evil exists now. 00:12:38.89\00:12:41.06 But yes, we have a firm hope 00:12:41.09\00:12:43.53 in what God will do in the future. 00:12:43.56\00:12:47.03 Amen, and God's going to create a new heaven and a new earth, 00:12:47.06\00:12:50.70 where there will be no more pain or sorrow. 00:12:50.73\00:12:53.17 Join us next time. 00:12:53.20\00:12:54.77
