Welcome to The Creator Revealed. 00:00:31.39\00:00:34.66 I'm Tim Standish and I'm a scientist. 00:00:34.70\00:00:38.03 Scientists are trained to observe things in nature. 00:00:38.07\00:00:43.71 And one of the things that we observe is evil. 00:00:43.74\00:00:47.98 Yeah, you know, last time we talked about 00:00:48.01\00:00:50.55 human in relational evil, 00:00:50.58\00:00:53.28 but this time, 00:00:53.31\00:00:54.98 we're going to talk about evil in nature, natural evil. 00:00:55.02\00:00:59.32 And we're so glad that you have joined us because, 00:00:59.35\00:01:02.29 you know, this is such an informative series, 00:01:02.32\00:01:05.26 and we're glad that you're enjoying it. 00:01:05.29\00:01:07.56 You know, before we actually go on, 00:01:07.60\00:01:09.83 I do want to point out that what we call evil 00:01:09.86\00:01:14.20 is really something that is subject to definition. 00:01:14.24\00:01:19.24 And we shouldn't be distracted by the evil 00:01:19.27\00:01:23.28 from all of that is wonderful out there in nature as well. 00:01:23.31\00:01:27.25 From the biblical perspective, we do acknowledge evil, 00:01:27.28\00:01:30.95 but we also recognize the good 00:01:30.99\00:01:35.62 and we believe that the good was created by God 00:01:35.66\00:01:39.96 at the very beginning. 00:01:40.00\00:01:41.33 Amen. 00:01:41.36\00:01:42.70 Moses wrote about this creation in this way in Genesis 1:31. 00:01:42.73\00:01:47.80 He said, "Then God saw everything that He had made, 00:01:47.84\00:01:51.21 and indeed it was very good." 00:01:51.24\00:01:53.71 Very good. 00:01:53.74\00:01:55.08 "So the evening and the morning were the sixth day." 00:01:55.11\00:01:57.18 So now they're going to go on into the Sabbath 00:01:57.21\00:02:00.48 and rest and spend that time together with God. 00:02:00.52\00:02:05.12 I can't imagine how beautiful the creation was. 00:02:05.15\00:02:09.36 And yet, we see things today that are the result of sin. 00:02:09.39\00:02:15.33 Those, sin is evil, 00:02:15.36\00:02:17.70 and the results of sin are evil consequences, 00:02:17.73\00:02:22.20 death, suffering, tears, pain. 00:02:22.24\00:02:25.57 So God cursed the earth because of the fall, 00:02:25.61\00:02:28.91 because of the evil. 00:02:28.94\00:02:30.28 Yes, Oh and human beings 00:02:30.31\00:02:33.95 chose the evil over the good. 00:02:33.98\00:02:37.85 It seems incredible, 00:02:37.89\00:02:39.82 in retrospect that would happen. 00:02:39.85\00:02:42.06 And yet, 00:02:42.09\00:02:43.86 I know that I've made that same decision myself on occasion. 00:02:43.89\00:02:48.00 But and, you know, when you think about deception, 00:02:48.03\00:02:51.10 sometimes people don't realize that what the devil hands us 00:02:51.13\00:02:55.80 can be in a shiny foil package with a beautiful bow. 00:02:55.84\00:03:00.01 And it's nothing more than gift wrapped garbage. 00:03:00.04\00:03:03.41 Unfortunately, that's the case of 00:03:03.45\00:03:05.51 and yet we go for it on occasion. 00:03:05.55\00:03:08.55 And in fact, I think we're going to talk right now 00:03:08.58\00:03:11.09 about some gift wrap garbage. 00:03:11.12\00:03:12.92 Okay. That's kind of harsh. 00:03:12.95\00:03:14.92 I believe that Charles Darwin was very brilliant man. 00:03:14.96\00:03:18.33 And that he understood the implications 00:03:18.36\00:03:20.80 of what he was saying. 00:03:20.83\00:03:22.16 And that's one of the things that we are contemplating now. 00:03:22.20\00:03:24.23 Because he, remember he had this 00:03:24.27\00:03:26.23 alternative materialistic conception of reality. 00:03:26.27\00:03:29.90 And he wrote this, he said, "From the war of nature, 00:03:29.94\00:03:34.18 from famine and death, 00:03:34.21\00:03:37.28 the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, 00:03:37.31\00:03:40.82 namely, the production of the higher animals, 00:03:40.85\00:03:43.55 directly follows." 00:03:43.59\00:03:46.99 Wow. 00:03:47.02\00:03:48.36 Well, so what Darwin is saying is that thing that we all know, 00:03:48.39\00:03:53.50 in our hearts is awful, death, suffering, war, 00:03:53.53\00:03:58.03 those sorts of things, 00:03:58.07\00:03:59.40 that that is what produced the beautiful things. 00:03:59.43\00:04:02.67 Yeah. 00:04:02.70\00:04:04.27 Whereas the biblical view, 00:04:04.31\00:04:07.28 the reality that's actually out there 00:04:07.31\00:04:09.71 is that God created all of that beauty, 00:04:09.74\00:04:12.91 all of that wonder, and the death, the suffering, 00:04:12.95\00:04:17.15 that evil is an imposition 00:04:17.19\00:04:19.72 on God's originally very good creation. 00:04:19.75\00:04:23.22 So these are very, very different views of things. 00:04:23.26\00:04:26.80 Why would a Darwinist consider war and death to be bad? 00:04:26.83\00:04:31.53 It's a good thing. 00:04:31.57\00:04:32.90 It makes wonderful things like human beings, 00:04:32.93\00:04:35.10 and eagles and, you know, 00:04:35.14\00:04:39.01 all of those things that we kind of wonder about. 00:04:39.04\00:04:41.44 What a convoluted way of thinking though... 00:04:41.48\00:04:43.75 Well, it is. In my mind. 00:04:43.78\00:04:45.11 But you say that, because you're coming at it 00:04:45.15\00:04:47.48 from a biblical perspective, yes. 00:04:47.52\00:04:50.29 But from a Darwinian perspective, 00:04:50.32\00:04:52.45 you could not say that, 00:04:52.49\00:04:55.22 it's the only logical thing from a Darwinian perspective. 00:04:55.26\00:04:58.76 I mean, you just look at pictures 00:04:58.79\00:05:00.56 of what's going on in Syria, for example, 00:05:00.60\00:05:03.16 how can anyone say war is good, 00:05:03.20\00:05:05.50 how can anyone say something is resulting 00:05:05.53\00:05:08.10 that's good from that 00:05:08.14\00:05:09.47 when you see all the destruction and suffering? 00:05:09.50\00:05:12.17 God has built into us 00:05:12.21\00:05:14.54 that fundamental understanding. 00:05:14.58\00:05:17.01 Amen. It is evil. 00:05:17.05\00:05:18.85 And evil is a bad thing. It doesn't produce good things. 00:05:18.88\00:05:23.52 In fact the Bible, again, this is Paul writing, 00:05:23.55\00:05:26.52 in the New Testament, he says, 00:05:26.55\00:05:27.89 "The last enemy to be destroyed is death." 00:05:27.92\00:05:30.99 Death is not our friend. 00:05:31.03\00:05:32.73 Death is not our Creator, 00:05:32.76\00:05:35.46 or part of the process of creating us. 00:05:35.50\00:05:38.20 Death is the enemy. 00:05:38.23\00:05:40.44 And Jesus Christ, our Creator, of course, overcame death. 00:05:40.47\00:05:45.17 Now I want to address one of the arguments 00:05:45.21\00:05:47.04 that's commonly put forward 00:05:47.08\00:05:49.14 about the creation when we look at it. 00:05:49.18\00:05:52.65 Remember, this is what scientists do, 00:05:52.68\00:05:54.38 we look at things and as I said, you know, 00:05:54.42\00:05:56.12 I look at nature and I see evil things. 00:05:56.15\00:05:59.35 I see things that break for example. 00:05:59.39\00:06:03.09 And there is this argument out there because nature breaks, 00:06:03.12\00:06:08.46 it doesn't work the way we think it should do 00:06:08.50\00:06:10.93 that somehow or other that is evidence 00:06:10.97\00:06:12.97 so that isn't created. 00:06:13.00\00:06:15.37 However, that is a flawed logic. 00:06:15.40\00:06:17.71 This is a picture here that I'm showing of a Ford Pinto. 00:06:17.74\00:06:22.31 Was this yours? And no, it wasn't mine. 00:06:22.34\00:06:27.02 Now, Ford Pintos. 00:06:27.05\00:06:30.89 They frankly were terrible cars. 00:06:30.92\00:06:33.19 I think anybody who's had an encounter with a Ford Pinto, 00:06:33.22\00:06:35.46 though they're probably a few Ford Pinto fans out there. 00:06:35.49\00:06:38.19 I'm sorry. 00:06:38.23\00:06:39.59 But that they just terrible vehicles 00:06:39.63\00:06:43.23 and but nobody doubt, so they were designed. 00:06:43.26\00:06:47.44 And they were designed for a purpose. 00:06:47.47\00:06:50.71 That, so even bad design is still design, 00:06:50.74\00:06:55.88 it still requires a mind. 00:06:55.91\00:06:57.51 The question really is, 00:06:57.55\00:06:59.48 is the design a good 00:06:59.51\00:07:01.92 or is the design an evil? 00:07:01.95\00:07:04.29 Is God good when we see these broken designs? 00:07:04.32\00:07:08.09 So let's just take a look at some of these things. 00:07:08.12\00:07:10.83 Oh, this is my beautiful dog, Jack. 00:07:10.86\00:07:14.66 And you can see he was so intelligent, 00:07:14.70\00:07:16.56 so full of love. 00:07:16.60\00:07:17.97 What Jack's doing here is 00:07:18.00\00:07:19.33 he's actually climbing into my suitcase. 00:07:19.37\00:07:21.27 He knows you're packing and leaving. 00:07:21.30\00:07:22.94 He knows I'm packing. 00:07:22.97\00:07:24.31 He wanted to come home with me. 00:07:24.34\00:07:25.84 And only less than a year ago, 00:07:25.87\00:07:29.18 I held Jack in my arms while he died. 00:07:29.21\00:07:33.75 And that was an awful, awful experience. 00:07:33.78\00:07:37.95 In fact, just talking about it now, 00:07:37.99\00:07:39.42 it kind of, it makes me, it makes me profoundly sad. 00:07:39.45\00:07:43.39 What a wonderful, lovely creature. 00:07:43.43\00:07:45.96 How can it be that our bodies grow old and we die? 00:07:45.99\00:07:50.80 How can that happen? 00:07:50.83\00:07:52.17 Well, you know, the wages of sin are death, 00:07:52.20\00:07:54.14 we know that. 00:07:54.17\00:07:56.24 So, you know, 00:07:56.27\00:07:58.21 the Bible doesn't ignore this suffering 00:07:58.24\00:08:00.81 and pain that we're in. 00:08:00.84\00:08:02.18 In fact, in Romans, Paul also wrote this, 00:08:02.21\00:08:06.08 he said, "We know that the whole creation 00:08:06.11\00:08:08.32 has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth 00:08:08.35\00:08:12.09 right up to the present time. 00:08:12.12\00:08:13.69 Not only so, but we ourselves, 00:08:13.72\00:08:16.42 who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly 00:08:16.46\00:08:20.16 as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, 00:08:20.20\00:08:24.57 the redemption of our bodies." 00:08:24.60\00:08:26.40 You see, the Bible provides hope, 00:08:26.43\00:08:29.90 the same God who created us. 00:08:29.94\00:08:32.74 Our Creator is our Redeemer, 00:08:32.77\00:08:35.74 and He adopts us, even though we rejected Him. 00:08:35.78\00:08:40.65 It's an amazing. 00:08:40.68\00:08:42.02 It's such incredibly good news. 00:08:42.05\00:08:45.19 It's rooted in our thinking about the creation. 00:08:45.22\00:08:48.82 And, of course, Paul also wrote this, 00:08:48.86\00:08:51.06 "Through one man sin entered the world, 00:08:51.09\00:08:53.90 and death through sin, 00:08:53.93\00:08:55.26 and thus death spread to all men, 00:08:55.30\00:08:57.00 because all sinned..." 00:08:57.03\00:08:58.37 This is in Romans 5, 00:08:58.40\00:08:59.73 he actually says the same thing over and over again, 00:08:59.77\00:09:01.20 so that we get it right. 00:09:01.24\00:09:02.57 We can't misunderstand here. 00:09:02.60\00:09:04.97 Death is a result of sin. Okay, and that's... 00:09:05.01\00:09:09.64 We can say, okay, that's a natural result. 00:09:09.68\00:09:11.48 You know, we separated ourselves from the life giver. 00:09:11.51\00:09:13.05 And it doesn't mean, you know, 00:09:13.08\00:09:14.42 I just want to say this in case there's somebody 00:09:14.45\00:09:16.72 watching who thinks, well, my two year old just died, 00:09:16.75\00:09:18.79 he didn't sin. 00:09:18.82\00:09:20.16 We're not talking about 00:09:20.19\00:09:21.52 the direct correlation of what you did. 00:09:21.56\00:09:24.53 I mean, maybe for the second death, yes. 00:09:24.56\00:09:26.83 But just that when sin entered the world, 00:09:26.86\00:09:30.00 everything started decaying. 00:09:30.03\00:09:31.83 It is going to be recreated. 00:09:31.87\00:09:33.64 That's right. 00:09:33.67\00:09:35.00 And this is one of the reasons that death is so awful 00:09:35.04\00:09:37.71 because it's so unjust. 00:09:37.74\00:09:39.07 Yes. 00:09:39.11\00:09:40.44 The righteous die 00:09:40.48\00:09:41.81 and the sinners die, everybody dies. 00:09:41.84\00:09:43.21 I mean, you know, this is, 00:09:43.24\00:09:44.58 we know this is not the way it should be. 00:09:44.61\00:09:46.05 Right. 00:09:46.08\00:09:47.42 But there's another kind of evil out there. 00:09:47.45\00:09:49.05 And I'm illustrating it with this viper here. 00:09:49.08\00:09:52.49 It's a rattlesnake, obviously. 00:09:52.52\00:09:54.62 And when we look at them, 00:09:54.66\00:09:56.12 when we look at their system of envenomation, 00:09:56.16\00:09:58.49 it looks like it's designed. 00:09:58.53\00:10:00.50 How do we account for that as Christians? 00:10:00.53\00:10:05.43 And the truth is, we don't know. 00:10:05.47\00:10:09.50 We don't know how that system 00:10:09.54\00:10:12.07 that has only one purpose and it is to kill. 00:10:12.11\00:10:16.01 How did that come into being? 00:10:16.04\00:10:18.51 The problem is that 00:10:18.55\00:10:20.78 we have too many possible explanations. 00:10:20.82\00:10:23.59 Yes. 00:10:23.62\00:10:24.95 Some people say the devil did it. 00:10:24.99\00:10:26.76 Some people say it's just sort of some kind of 00:10:26.79\00:10:29.22 natural consequence of things breaking down. 00:10:29.26\00:10:32.23 Some people even say God did it, 00:10:32.26\00:10:34.10 you know, God, somehow or other 00:10:34.13\00:10:36.56 when He cursed the earth and certainly 00:10:36.60\00:10:38.73 He specifically cursed snakes. 00:10:38.77\00:10:40.80 Maybe that was it, we don't know. 00:10:40.84\00:10:45.01 It's a mystery. 00:10:45.04\00:10:46.37 It is a mystery, 00:10:46.41\00:10:47.74 but what we do know is that 00:10:47.78\00:10:49.11 there is still an awful lot of beauty and goodness 00:10:49.14\00:10:53.31 that is evident in the creation. 00:10:53.35\00:10:55.72 And, oh, we also know, by the way, 00:10:55.75\00:10:58.25 that snakes are not alone. 00:10:58.29\00:11:00.69 I like tarantulas, 00:11:00.72\00:11:02.46 it kind of like a story things. 00:11:02.49\00:11:04.46 But they do have venom and they can inject it into. 00:11:04.49\00:11:08.03 So you do have to... 00:11:08.06\00:11:09.46 Don't go and pick up every tarantula out there 00:11:09.50\00:11:11.47 as I'm doing in this photograph. 00:11:11.50\00:11:14.14 But just understand, hey, you know, 00:11:14.17\00:11:16.00 there's lots of this that we see out there. 00:11:16.04\00:11:19.47 But here's what the Bible tells us. 00:11:19.51\00:11:22.64 This is Paul again, he's writing to Timothy, 00:11:22.68\00:11:24.95 my namesake. 00:11:24.98\00:11:26.31 And he says, "Here is a trustworthy saying 00:11:26.35\00:11:28.52 that deserves full acceptance: 00:11:28.55\00:11:30.82 Christ Jesus came into the world 00:11:30.85\00:11:33.22 to save sinners of whom I am the worst." 00:11:33.25\00:11:37.09 I could say the same thing about myself as well. 00:11:37.13\00:11:40.20 Yes, and that's really what the Bible brings to us 00:11:40.23\00:11:44.07 the promise of a solution to this problem. 00:11:44.10\00:11:46.57 It recognizes the problem and provides a solution. 00:11:46.60\00:11:50.31 And what the solution is, is the new creation. 00:11:50.34\00:11:54.44 And we have this wonderful view of the new creation in Isaiah, 00:11:54.48\00:11:58.11 the Book of Isaiah, which talks a lot about creation, 00:11:58.15\00:12:00.48 by the way. 00:12:00.52\00:12:01.85 Here, he writes, 00:12:01.88\00:12:03.22 "The infant will play near the cobra's den, 00:12:03.25\00:12:07.12 the young child will put his hand 00:12:07.16\00:12:09.26 into the viper's nest." 00:12:09.29\00:12:10.63 Why? 00:12:10.66\00:12:11.99 Because there will be no death, no suffering, 00:12:12.03\00:12:14.26 that's all going to be eliminated 00:12:14.30\00:12:16.10 in God's new creation. 00:12:16.13\00:12:19.17 Amen. 00:12:19.20\00:12:21.87 I'm just struck by the hope that the Bible gives. 00:12:21.90\00:12:27.84 It's not a book of sort of idealism or made up stories. 00:12:27.88\00:12:34.32 It is a book about reality, 00:12:34.35\00:12:36.72 the real things that are going on in the world 00:12:36.75\00:12:39.82 that we observe all around us, 00:12:39.85\00:12:41.82 but it is also a book about the reality that is coming. 00:12:41.86\00:12:47.03 It tells us what the solution to what we know is wrong is. 00:12:47.06\00:12:52.77 Amen. 00:12:52.80\00:12:54.14 So what does this natural evil tell us about the Creator? 00:12:54.17\00:12:58.34 Well, there are a couple of things 00:12:58.37\00:12:59.84 that are important points so we can pull out of this. 00:12:59.87\00:13:01.94 First, His selfless sacrifice 00:13:01.98\00:13:05.61 to overcome the impact of sin on His creation. 00:13:05.65\00:13:11.02 The evil makes that whole the more meaningful, 00:13:11.05\00:13:13.52 he suffered as we do. 00:13:13.56\00:13:15.72 And it also tells us about His original plan for His creation. 00:13:15.76\00:13:20.03 Remember, he had a plan of salvation 00:13:20.06\00:13:22.33 that again reveals his selflessness. 00:13:22.36\00:13:25.53 So the created things made evil by sin, 00:13:25.57\00:13:28.80 reveal the Creator's selflessness. 00:13:28.84\00:13:32.51 And that always blows my mind 00:13:32.54\00:13:34.54 when I think about the fact that He knew 00:13:34.58\00:13:37.25 before He created us, 00:13:37.28\00:13:39.38 with His foreknowledge, things were gonna go south, 00:13:39.41\00:13:42.45 and yet He planned before He even created us 00:13:42.48\00:13:47.56 to come down here, become a man and save us. 00:13:47.59\00:13:51.63 Ooh! That's amazing. 00:13:51.66\00:13:53.70 Well, we are going to take just a moment's break 00:13:53.73\00:13:56.70 and come back with a very interesting guest. 00:13:56.73\00:13:59.80 So please stay tuned. 00:13:59.83\00:14:01.17
