Welcome back to The Creator Revealed. 00:00:03.13\00:00:05.30 If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, 00:00:05.33\00:00:08.10 it is certain that our next guest 00:00:08.14\00:00:10.94 sees the beauty of God's creation 00:00:10.97\00:00:14.81 and expresses it ever so well. 00:00:14.84\00:00:17.78 I would have to agree with you. 00:00:17.81\00:00:19.98 Nathan Greene is really one of the premier 00:00:20.02\00:00:25.12 Christian artists of our age. 00:00:25.15\00:00:27.86 And if you have an image in your head 00:00:27.89\00:00:31.69 of what Jesus looks like, 00:00:31.73\00:00:34.00 it could well have been painted by Nathan Greene. 00:00:34.03\00:00:37.60 So we're delighted to have him with us. 00:00:37.63\00:00:40.47 Absolutely. 00:00:40.50\00:00:41.84 And I'm hoping that we're going to be able to see... 00:00:41.87\00:00:44.11 Oh, yes, in fact, we can see some of these paintings 00:00:44.14\00:00:47.58 that you've been working on. 00:00:47.61\00:00:48.94 Welcome, Nathan. Thank you. 00:00:48.98\00:00:52.25 So we've be talking about the beauty 00:00:52.28\00:00:57.69 that's present there in the creation 00:00:57.72\00:00:59.99 and the encouragement that the Bible actually gives us 00:01:00.02\00:01:03.12 on obviously the biblical worldview 00:01:03.16\00:01:05.93 to actually see that beauty 00:01:05.96\00:01:08.46 and gain joy from it. 00:01:08.50\00:01:13.70 But what I'd like to ask you is, 00:01:13.74\00:01:17.11 as an artist, you know, 00:01:17.14\00:01:18.47 somebody who really appreciates beauty 00:01:18.51\00:01:20.11 and produces beautiful things yourself, 00:01:20.14\00:01:23.68 how is it that the creation 00:01:23.71\00:01:26.55 inspires the work that you do? 00:01:26.58\00:01:30.95 Well, you know, when you think about it, 00:01:30.99\00:01:32.85 artists study a lot of the same things that scientists study, 00:01:32.89\00:01:37.19 chemists, physicists, mathematicians, 00:01:37.23\00:01:39.96 they study things like symmetry, and harmony, 00:01:40.00\00:01:43.37 and perspective, and proportion, 00:01:43.40\00:01:45.50 and economy of design. 00:01:45.53\00:01:47.07 These are all things that artists study well. 00:01:47.10\00:01:50.57 And for me, in particular, as a Christian artist, 00:01:50.61\00:01:54.28 I look at nature and I see all these things. 00:01:54.31\00:01:56.51 I don't know, I'm not a mathematician, 00:01:56.54\00:01:58.81 I don't necessarily define things 00:01:58.85\00:02:01.48 or study things in terms of equations and numbers, 00:02:01.52\00:02:04.59 but I see symmetry and harmony in balance in nature. 00:02:04.62\00:02:07.92 And so it's evident to me that there is a designer 00:02:07.96\00:02:11.63 and a master artist involved in creating the world for us. 00:02:11.66\00:02:16.03 Yes. 00:02:16.06\00:02:17.40 Well, I have to admit 00:02:17.43\00:02:19.87 that I'm fascinated by these paintings 00:02:19.90\00:02:22.64 that you have up behind you, 00:02:22.67\00:02:25.01 and I'm wondering if you can tell us 00:02:25.04\00:02:28.01 a little bit about them. 00:02:28.04\00:02:29.38 I see that there's one that looks fairly complete, 00:02:29.41\00:02:32.15 that would be over your right shoulder. 00:02:32.18\00:02:36.02 So tell us, is this a series that you're working on 00:02:36.05\00:02:38.89 or where are those coming from? 00:02:38.92\00:02:42.72 Well, my agent and one of our clients, 00:02:42.76\00:02:45.79 our patrons who prefers to remain anonymous, 00:02:45.83\00:02:48.90 they came up with the idea of creating a new series 00:02:48.93\00:02:51.63 of paintings depicting the seven days, 00:02:51.67\00:02:53.87 seven literal days of creation from the Book of Genesis. 00:02:53.90\00:02:57.41 I'm almost done with the project. 00:02:57.44\00:02:59.47 The paint you see over my right shoulder 00:02:59.51\00:03:02.41 is day one of the creation series. 00:03:02.44\00:03:04.68 Okay, so this would be, "Let there be light," then. 00:03:04.71\00:03:07.68 Yes, let there be light. 00:03:07.72\00:03:09.18 And the Spirit of God hovered over the waters. 00:03:09.22\00:03:11.95 And so you see Christ the Creator standing, 00:03:11.99\00:03:15.82 really floating over the waters that were on the earth. 00:03:15.86\00:03:18.96 And you might notice in the background, 00:03:18.99\00:03:21.20 there are many equations 00:03:21.23\00:03:22.83 representing the laws of nature, 00:03:22.86\00:03:25.57 and other designs and things 00:03:25.60\00:03:27.97 that God truly had in mind as He completed our world. 00:03:28.00\00:03:30.34 I think I might see... 00:03:30.37\00:03:31.71 I think I might be able to see some DNA in there, am I right? 00:03:31.74\00:03:34.51 There is definitely DNA, there is photosynthesis, 00:03:34.54\00:03:39.38 there's many equations like Maxwell's equations, 00:03:39.41\00:03:42.42 Einstein's field theorems, and E=MC square, 00:03:42.45\00:03:46.39 there is the golden mean, 00:03:46.42\00:03:47.76 this ratio that is found often in nature, in many things 00:03:47.79\00:03:52.59 that is thought to be kind of an ideal proportion, 00:03:52.63\00:03:56.83 found in things like the nautilus shell, 00:03:56.87\00:03:59.93 the rose petals, the way they're aligned on a rose 00:03:59.97\00:04:04.37 are lined up according to that ratio. 00:04:04.41\00:04:07.64 It's even thought that that ratio 00:04:07.68\00:04:09.44 appears in the human form and human face. 00:04:09.48\00:04:12.18 And something that artists have been aware of for a long time. 00:04:12.21\00:04:16.25 You know, one of the things that I like about artists, 00:04:16.28\00:04:19.05 and I have a number of friends who are artists, 00:04:19.09\00:04:21.12 is really a point that you raised which is, 00:04:21.16\00:04:25.59 artists are trained to be observers, 00:04:25.63\00:04:29.60 and scientists are trained to be observers, 00:04:29.63\00:04:34.30 and yet we really are coming at things 00:04:34.34\00:04:39.37 from very, very different angles. 00:04:39.41\00:04:44.05 What I would be interested in is, 00:04:44.08\00:04:47.78 how you think the art 00:04:47.82\00:04:53.42 that you do would be different 00:04:53.46\00:04:55.79 if you didn't believe the Bible, 00:04:55.82\00:04:57.73 if you didn't believe that in the creation, 00:04:57.76\00:05:01.23 let's say, would things be different? 00:05:01.26\00:05:03.40 Would you be choosing different subjects, 00:05:03.43\00:05:05.37 painting in a different style? 00:05:05.40\00:05:07.90 That's an interesting question because I have many friends 00:05:07.94\00:05:10.84 who are artists that some are believers and some are not. 00:05:10.87\00:05:14.41 And even those that are not believers, 00:05:14.44\00:05:16.54 they often find the greatest enjoyment, 00:05:16.58\00:05:19.28 I think, in painting landscapes and wildlife 00:05:19.31\00:05:22.98 and things that are nature, 00:05:23.02\00:05:24.92 that are reflection of what God has created. 00:05:24.95\00:05:27.66 I think people, you know, 00:05:27.69\00:05:29.82 the idea would be for everybody to have faith and confidence 00:05:29.86\00:05:33.80 that there is a Creator and a Designer 00:05:33.83\00:05:36.16 for the world around us. 00:05:36.20\00:05:37.53 But even people who don't believe that seem to see 00:05:37.57\00:05:39.60 and appreciate the beauty that is there. 00:05:39.63\00:05:42.87 But I think because I was born and raised in a Christian home 00:05:42.90\00:05:47.24 and recognize the importance of this, 00:05:47.28\00:05:49.34 I see a Creator in everything around us, 00:05:49.38\00:05:52.01 and I believe that the beauty, and design, 00:05:52.05\00:05:54.58 and all the laws of nature 00:05:54.62\00:05:57.75 which are also reflecting beautiful design 00:05:57.79\00:06:00.52 are evidence of God as the master artist 00:06:00.56\00:06:03.16 and as the master designer of our world. 00:06:03.19\00:06:05.46 I'm looking now at the painting that's immediately behind you, 00:06:08.93\00:06:13.84 and I can see that that one's not complete yet, 00:06:13.87\00:06:16.94 but it looks to me like you're actually depicting God, 00:06:16.97\00:06:21.54 I'm guessing, 00:06:21.58\00:06:24.31 creating Adam, shaping Adam, actually working as, 00:06:24.35\00:06:29.05 essentially, a sculptor in there. 00:06:29.08\00:06:32.05 Yes. 00:06:32.09\00:06:33.56 Yeah, this is day six of the creation series, 00:06:33.59\00:06:36.32 it's the last one. 00:06:36.36\00:06:37.69 I actually went ahead and did day seven 00:06:37.73\00:06:39.06 before finishing day six. 00:06:39.09\00:06:40.86 So this is my last one, and this depicts Christ 00:06:40.90\00:06:44.10 as the Creator forming Adam from the ground 00:06:44.13\00:06:48.10 and there'll be a glow over Adam, 00:06:48.14\00:06:50.54 almost like a supernatural glow, 00:06:50.57\00:06:52.77 and it was on day that land animals, 00:06:52.81\00:06:57.05 mammals were created. 00:06:57.08\00:06:58.88 And several days after all botanical life was created. 00:06:58.91\00:07:02.15 So this is kind of a flourishing 00:07:02.18\00:07:04.82 Edenic environment where Adam was first created. 00:07:04.85\00:07:10.56 You know, Nathan, 00:07:10.59\00:07:12.43 there's undeniable beauty and symmetry in God's creation. 00:07:12.46\00:07:16.93 And I see it everywhere, 00:07:16.97\00:07:18.33 but I wished I could look through your eyes. 00:07:18.37\00:07:20.47 I'm always so interested in a composition of your artwork. 00:07:20.50\00:07:25.47 It's beautiful. 00:07:25.51\00:07:27.24 God's given you a true gift. 00:07:27.28\00:07:29.98 Thank you. 00:07:30.01\00:07:31.35 One of the things that I do see in that particular painting 00:07:31.38\00:07:33.62 that jumps out at me as a biologist 00:07:33.65\00:07:36.18 is that tiger down there. 00:07:36.22\00:07:39.19 You know, I grew up in, 00:07:39.22\00:07:41.46 particularly during the time that I was a child in Malaysia. 00:07:41.49\00:07:45.16 If there was one thing I was taught to fear, 00:07:45.19\00:07:48.26 it would be tigers. 00:07:48.30\00:07:50.10 You know, you didn't go wandering off into the jungle, 00:07:50.13\00:07:52.90 for some reason or other, cobras were okay, 00:07:52.93\00:07:56.50 but those tigers could really get you. 00:07:56.54\00:08:01.58 So tell me a little bit about your thinking 00:08:01.61\00:08:04.25 in including this interesting collection of animals 00:08:04.28\00:08:10.79 along with God creating the human being? 00:08:10.82\00:08:15.12 Yes. 00:08:15.16\00:08:16.49 Well, to me, the design of the animals themselves 00:08:16.52\00:08:19.46 are remarkable and beautiful, 00:08:19.49\00:08:22.93 and to my mind they're evidence of the Creator. 00:08:22.96\00:08:26.07 The tiger is especially amazing to me. 00:08:26.10\00:08:29.47 I mean, we have house cats 00:08:29.50\00:08:30.91 that are a little hint of what a tiger is, 00:08:30.94\00:08:33.17 but just the thought of such a massive animal 00:08:33.21\00:08:35.91 and the fact that they are becoming 00:08:35.94\00:08:38.05 more and more endangered 00:08:38.08\00:08:40.42 is the reason why I wanted to show 00:08:40.45\00:08:43.69 one of the original tigers in my painting here. 00:08:43.72\00:08:46.45 But also a variety of life and not just North American, 00:08:46.49\00:08:49.89 but from other continents, got an elephant, 00:08:49.92\00:08:53.40 I got what I'm calling a gazelle. 00:08:53.43\00:08:56.13 I'm not from Africa. 00:08:56.16\00:08:57.50 I'm not sure exactly what species, 00:08:57.53\00:08:58.87 but I gave it a name Gisele the gazelle. 00:08:58.90\00:09:03.20 By the way, tiger reappears in day seven as well. 00:09:03.24\00:09:08.11 I guess it's just the tiger fell in love with Adam 00:09:08.14\00:09:11.11 and want to hang around for day seven. 00:09:11.15\00:09:14.05 There you go. 00:09:14.08\00:09:15.42 You know, when I was a little boy, 00:09:15.45\00:09:17.55 I had a pet monkey. 00:09:17.59\00:09:19.52 My mother didn't think much of that pet, I'm afraid. 00:09:19.55\00:09:24.03 But he was fantastic. 00:09:24.06\00:09:25.83 And, but I have to admit, I have to admit that 00:09:25.86\00:09:30.63 there was a desire 00:09:30.67\00:09:36.50 and the fear when it came to tigers. 00:09:36.54\00:09:40.21 I would love to have a pet tiger. 00:09:40.24\00:09:41.81 Yes. 00:09:41.84\00:09:43.18 And you'll get to in the new earth. 00:09:43.21\00:09:44.55 And this is one of the truly beautiful things about these... 00:09:44.58\00:09:48.18 You know, I'm sorry, we can't be showing the tiger right now 00:09:48.22\00:09:50.39 because we are having some Skype issues. 00:09:50.42\00:09:53.22 This is what technology is, right? 00:09:53.25\00:09:55.29 This is what technology does, yeah, 00:09:55.32\00:09:57.03 but...Oh, that's beautiful. 00:09:57.06\00:09:58.39 Oh, isn't that wonderful? This would be day five. 00:09:58.43\00:10:01.26 Yes. 00:10:01.30\00:10:02.76 I think that the thing that kind of strikes me 00:10:02.80\00:10:08.40 at an emotional level 00:10:08.44\00:10:10.84 with these paintings is in fact seeing... 00:10:10.87\00:10:13.98 Oh, what a beautiful tiger. 00:10:14.01\00:10:15.34 Yeah, that's the Sabbath there. Oh, that's beautiful. 00:10:15.38\00:10:18.11 It is seeing these beautiful creatures 00:10:18.15\00:10:23.85 that unfortunately, 00:10:23.89\00:10:26.59 in the current world, are problematic, 00:10:26.62\00:10:31.09 really problematic. 00:10:31.13\00:10:32.79 So I can still hear Nathan, 00:10:32.83\00:10:34.83 unfortunately we can't see him anymore, 00:10:34.86\00:10:36.56 but I want to thank you so much for sharing your art with us 00:10:36.60\00:10:40.04 and with the rest of the world, Nathan. 00:10:40.07\00:10:42.50 And it's greatly appreciated. 00:10:42.54\00:10:46.74 Thank you. 00:10:46.78\00:10:48.11 Thank you, Nathan, so much. 00:10:48.14\00:10:49.74 I have a beautiful picture. 00:10:49.78\00:10:51.48 Everyone always tells me that I have the heart of Mary, 00:10:51.51\00:10:54.78 I love to sit at the feet of Jesus and learn, 00:10:54.82\00:10:57.79 but I live in a Martha world. 00:10:57.82\00:11:00.69 So Nathan did a beautiful picture of Jesus, 00:11:00.72\00:11:03.96 Mary and Martha, and Mary sitting at His feet, 00:11:03.99\00:11:06.73 Martha's rattling the pots and pans, 00:11:06.76\00:11:09.06 and I feel like a blend of the two. 00:11:09.10\00:11:11.47 You know, I see these sorts of things 00:11:11.50\00:11:12.97 and I wonder whether I haven't done 00:11:13.00\00:11:14.37 something wrong with my life. 00:11:14.40\00:11:16.30 Maybe I should have succumbed to that temptation 00:11:16.34\00:11:19.41 to be an art major in college. 00:11:19.44\00:11:22.08 But there is so much beauty out there, 00:11:22.11\00:11:24.28 so much, so much that really glorifies God. 00:11:24.31\00:11:28.58 And it's fabulous 00:11:28.62\00:11:30.99 to see artists sort of worshiping God 00:11:31.02\00:11:35.82 through the work that they do. 00:11:35.86\00:11:37.69 And you do that with your photography. 00:11:37.73\00:11:39.73 With my photography. 00:11:39.76\00:11:41.10 But also I like to imagine with the work that I do in general, 00:11:41.13\00:11:44.60 you know, every one of us 00:11:44.63\00:11:46.37 no matter what it is that we do in life, 00:11:46.40\00:11:48.97 each one of us is called to worship the Creator 00:11:49.00\00:11:54.71 and that's not something that we do just 00:11:54.74\00:11:56.61 when we're in church. 00:11:56.64\00:11:57.98 That's something that we can do in our everyday lives 00:11:58.01\00:12:01.92 as we share the Creator with others. 00:12:01.95\00:12:03.35 Amen. 00:12:03.39\00:12:04.72 And I just want to encourage you 00:12:04.75\00:12:07.09 that when it come next Sabbath, 00:12:07.12\00:12:09.96 go out into God's creation after church 00:12:09.99\00:12:13.26 and look at what the Lord has done for us, 00:12:13.29\00:12:16.97 worship the Creator. 00:12:17.00\00:12:19.00
