Welcome back to The Creator Revealed. 00:00:02.00\00:00:03.73 Today, we've been talking about the beautiful relationships 00:00:03.77\00:00:07.47 that exist between God's creatures, and plants, 00:00:07.50\00:00:10.87 and organisms, and ecology. 00:00:10.91\00:00:13.21 And we see that it isn't all about struggle 00:00:13.24\00:00:16.98 and competition, is it? 00:00:17.01\00:00:18.35 No. 00:00:18.38\00:00:19.71 Actually, I would say my observation 00:00:19.75\00:00:22.12 is that life itself could not exist 00:00:22.15\00:00:24.79 unless there was this beautiful cooperation 00:00:24.82\00:00:28.52 that we observed between interdependent organisms. 00:00:28.56\00:00:32.23 In fact, I find that myself to be possibly or arguably 00:00:32.26\00:00:37.00 the most beautiful thing about the creation, 00:00:37.03\00:00:40.00 everything seems to need to work together 00:00:40.04\00:00:44.94 in a beautiful way for life itself to exist. 00:00:44.97\00:00:48.74 There's a sermon in that. 00:00:48.78\00:00:50.68 There probably is. 00:00:50.71\00:00:52.05 God wants from us isn't it? 00:00:52.08\00:00:53.42 On the subject of sermons, 00:00:53.45\00:00:56.18 during the break we were talking about how, 00:00:56.22\00:00:58.32 you know, people have this idea that somehow or other, 00:00:58.35\00:01:01.06 people with PhDs in theology is stuffy 00:01:01.09\00:01:03.89 and things like that. 00:01:03.93\00:01:05.26 But we're just delighted 00:01:05.29\00:01:07.86 right now to have Dr. Jo Ann Davidson with us, 00:01:07.90\00:01:10.87 somebody who is definitely not stuffy. 00:01:10.90\00:01:14.50 Dr. Davidson is a Professor of Systematic Theology 00:01:14.54\00:01:19.17 at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary 00:01:19.21\00:01:22.58 at my alma mater, Andrews University. 00:01:22.61\00:01:25.05 Praise God. 00:01:25.08\00:01:26.41 Thank you so much for joining us, Dr. Davidson. 00:01:26.45\00:01:29.82 Oh, I'm glad to be invited when you talk about. 00:01:29.85\00:01:31.92 This subject is one of my favorite. 00:01:31.95\00:01:33.29 Exactly. 00:01:33.32\00:01:34.66 I mean, who doesn't love ecology, 00:01:34.69\00:01:37.16 especially, when we're coming at it from the perspective 00:01:37.19\00:01:40.70 that the Bible gives us on nature and the creation. 00:01:40.73\00:01:46.57 And I like that you talked about how this cooperation 00:01:46.60\00:01:50.14 must be there. 00:01:50.17\00:01:51.51 I mean, it's there. 00:01:51.54\00:01:52.87 And you as a biologist could have added 00:01:52.91\00:01:54.98 down to the cellular level even what is, 00:01:55.01\00:01:58.35 how all works together. 00:01:58.38\00:01:59.71 How individual cells have parts that work together, 00:01:59.75\00:02:02.52 cells work together and it just no matter 00:02:02.55\00:02:04.19 where you look, 00:02:04.22\00:02:05.55 there's wonderful cooperation. 00:02:05.59\00:02:08.36 And interestingly enough, we as human beings, 00:02:08.39\00:02:11.43 we instinctively know that there is something 00:02:11.46\00:02:14.16 wrong going on 00:02:14.20\00:02:15.66 when we see a breakdown of that cooperation, 00:02:15.70\00:02:19.63 things like cancer, 00:02:19.67\00:02:21.00 that's a breakdown of cooperation between cells. 00:02:21.04\00:02:27.01 And I believe, we naturally wince 00:02:27.04\00:02:30.45 when we see these sort of terrible things 00:02:30.48\00:02:33.78 that do occasionally occur in nature, 00:02:33.82\00:02:35.78 like lions killing gazelles and stuff. 00:02:35.82\00:02:38.42 We know in our hearts that that's just not the way 00:02:38.45\00:02:43.02 it's supposed to be. 00:02:43.06\00:02:45.73 The creation is broken in some profound way. 00:02:45.76\00:02:51.17 Oh, yes. 00:02:51.20\00:02:52.53 And, you know, 00:02:52.57\00:02:53.90 when people think about heaven, 00:02:53.94\00:02:55.94 they think about golden streets and playing harps on a cloud 00:02:55.97\00:02:58.77 but when God describes heaven in Isaiah 11, 00:02:58.81\00:03:01.81 He describes all of this cruelty being erased away. 00:03:01.84\00:03:06.92 The lions gonna lie down with the lamb 00:03:06.95\00:03:08.82 and the goat with the leopard 00:03:08.85\00:03:10.42 and a little kid can put his hand in a cobra's hole. 00:03:10.45\00:03:13.79 And then it says the reason why this is gonna happen 00:03:13.82\00:03:16.12 is because the world will be full of the knowledge of God 00:03:16.16\00:03:19.79 as the waters covered sea. 00:03:19.83\00:03:21.56 And so God is looking forward to this day too. 00:03:21.60\00:03:25.67 Someday His dreams for this planet 00:03:25.70\00:03:27.70 are gonna come true and He's looking for... 00:03:27.74\00:03:30.37 It's such a glorious thing. 00:03:30.41\00:03:33.04 And it's not just that these are kind of empty, 00:03:33.07\00:03:36.21 unfounded promises, 00:03:36.24\00:03:38.08 or something that we see out there. 00:03:38.11\00:03:43.59 These are things that we can see foreshadowing's 00:03:43.62\00:03:46.19 of already in the creation 00:03:46.22\00:03:48.86 as we look at these beautiful cooperative relationships. 00:03:48.89\00:03:52.06 And even occasionally, we see beautiful things 00:03:52.09\00:03:55.30 between human beings and creatures 00:03:55.33\00:03:57.70 that you wouldn't expect... 00:03:57.73\00:03:59.07 I think about those occasional stories 00:03:59.10\00:04:00.94 that you hear about lions that bond in some way 00:04:00.97\00:04:03.77 with human beings and it's such a... 00:04:03.81\00:04:06.24 Heartwarming. Yes. 00:04:06.27\00:04:07.61 It's a heart-warming and beautiful thing to see. 00:04:07.64\00:04:10.35 However, there is an argument that I've heard made 00:04:10.38\00:04:14.58 that goes basically like this. 00:04:14.62\00:04:16.79 If Jesus is coming again, 00:04:16.82\00:04:19.02 if there's going to be a new creation, 00:04:19.05\00:04:21.42 and if this old creation is broken, 00:04:21.46\00:04:27.03 why should we care about it, 00:04:27.06\00:04:30.17 why worry about taking care of nature at all and, 00:04:30.20\00:04:34.64 you know, being conservationists 00:04:34.67\00:04:36.37 or something like that. 00:04:36.40\00:04:37.74 This earth is going to be destroyed by fire 00:04:37.77\00:04:41.64 when Jesus comes, why should we worry about it? 00:04:41.68\00:04:47.42 Oh, that's a question I hear so much. 00:04:47.45\00:04:49.48 But I'm thinking then the people aren't aware 00:04:49.52\00:04:51.79 of the message of Scripture because before sin, 00:04:51.82\00:04:55.56 Adam and Eve were given a job to tend and to care 00:04:55.59\00:04:58.43 for the garden and there wasn't... 00:04:58.46\00:05:01.56 That was a privilege and a joy. 00:05:01.60\00:05:03.20 And why aren't we thinking 00:05:03.23\00:05:05.77 we need to work with that special instruction 00:05:05.80\00:05:08.77 even now, even though things are broken? 00:05:08.80\00:05:10.91 Why are we thinking of caring and tending 00:05:10.94\00:05:13.11 for this great place that God made? 00:05:13.14\00:05:15.31 I find it interesting in Psalm 98 and other places. 00:05:15.34\00:05:18.71 But it's very clear in Psalm 98 00:05:18.75\00:05:20.75 "All nature," it says, 00:05:20.78\00:05:22.68 "the rivers are clapping their hands, 00:05:22.72\00:05:24.22 the hills are joyful together, and all nature's rejoicing." 00:05:24.25\00:05:27.59 And then it gives the reason why, 00:05:27.62\00:05:29.69 it says because God is going to come to judge the world, 00:05:29.72\00:05:33.80 and judge the earth, and the people's with equity, 00:05:33.83\00:05:36.70 and it includes both the earth and the people's, 00:05:36.73\00:05:39.60 then God's gonna judge and He's gonna hold us 00:05:39.63\00:05:41.40 responsible for not caring for this great place 00:05:41.44\00:05:45.01 that He gave us. 00:05:45.04\00:05:46.37 In the Book of Revelation as the Bible closes, 00:05:46.41\00:05:48.71 I think it refers back to that. 00:05:48.74\00:05:50.25 Because in Revelation Chapter 7, 00:05:50.28\00:05:51.95 it talks about the angels holding back the winds 00:05:51.98\00:05:55.22 of strife from the earth and the sea and the trees 00:05:55.25\00:05:58.89 and finally, the elders around the throne say, 00:05:58.92\00:06:02.49 "It's time that you destroy those 00:06:02.52\00:06:04.83 who destroy the earth." 00:06:04.86\00:06:06.53 And heaven is watching and seeing if we appreciate 00:06:06.56\00:06:09.83 this great nest that God has given us. 00:06:09.86\00:06:12.93 Don't you think that part of the reason, 00:06:12.97\00:06:15.74 Dr. Davidson, that God gave us when He gave us dominion 00:06:15.77\00:06:20.58 we were to learn to rule in covenantal love 00:06:20.61\00:06:24.15 as He does with us? 00:06:24.18\00:06:26.51 It was all about our character development, 00:06:26.55\00:06:29.18 don't you think? 00:06:29.22\00:06:30.55 Oh, yes. 00:06:30.59\00:06:31.92 And if we're created in God's image, 00:06:31.95\00:06:33.29 we should think it'd be a natural thing 00:06:33.32\00:06:34.72 that we want to reflect God's loving concern 00:06:34.76\00:06:38.46 for this or like He does. 00:06:38.49\00:06:39.83 Yes. 00:06:39.86\00:06:41.20 I mean, that's what it partly means to be created 00:06:41.23\00:06:42.56 in His image. 00:06:42.60\00:06:43.93 Amen. Yeah. 00:06:43.97\00:06:45.30 You know, in thinking about this myself, 00:06:45.33\00:06:49.27 what the analogy that I would draw 00:06:49.30\00:06:51.84 is something like this. 00:06:51.87\00:06:53.21 You know, if you go to the Louvre in Paris, 00:06:53.24\00:06:57.51 there are lots of fabulous works of art there, 00:06:57.55\00:06:59.48 but the Venus de Milo is there. 00:06:59.51\00:07:01.62 Now when you think about it, 00:07:01.65\00:07:02.98 the Venus de Milo is an old broken statue, right? 00:07:03.02\00:07:08.62 But it is still so fabulously beautiful. 00:07:08.66\00:07:12.56 If I went into the Louvre with a hammer 00:07:12.59\00:07:14.56 and smash the Venus de Milo into pieces, 00:07:14.60\00:07:17.20 I mean, wouldn't any reasonable rational person, 00:07:17.23\00:07:20.94 anybody with a soul be horrified at that? 00:07:20.97\00:07:25.31 And yet, you know, it's surely... 00:07:25.34\00:07:28.64 If we go and just destroy 00:07:28.68\00:07:33.45 this wonderful work of art 00:07:33.48\00:07:37.95 that God created, 00:07:37.99\00:07:40.96 it says something profoundly evil about ourselves. 00:07:40.99\00:07:46.73 There's something wrong with us if we actually feel it, 00:07:46.76\00:07:51.40 that's okay. 00:07:51.43\00:07:53.37 And, you know, I think the ancients were 00:07:53.40\00:07:55.70 more in tune to creation than we are. 00:07:55.74\00:07:57.17 I love that passage in Job, the oldest book in the Bible. 00:07:57.21\00:07:59.74 Where Job says, the animals, if you watch, will teach you, 00:07:59.77\00:08:03.38 and they'll help you learn about God. 00:08:03.41\00:08:04.78 And I think that's really important. 00:08:04.81\00:08:07.32 If we turn away and don't care for this earth, 00:08:07.35\00:08:09.22 we're gonna lose a lot of lessons 00:08:09.25\00:08:10.65 that God is trying to show us how wonderful He is, 00:08:10.69\00:08:13.49 and what He's given us. 00:08:13.52\00:08:15.82 Nature itself praises God and it can teach us 00:08:15.86\00:08:18.59 how wonderful the Creator is. 00:08:18.63\00:08:21.13 So as a theologian 00:08:21.16\00:08:23.60 and obviously a lover of nature itself, 00:08:23.63\00:08:28.77 tell me this in from your perspective, 00:08:28.80\00:08:33.48 what do you see out there that you consider 00:08:33.51\00:08:35.84 to be the most beautiful thing that teaches us the most 00:08:35.88\00:08:40.65 about God and His nature? 00:08:40.68\00:08:44.09 I heard one person describe it this way, 00:08:44.12\00:08:47.22 which I've taken to be my own that said, 00:08:47.26\00:08:48.86 every animal can teach us a character quality 00:08:48.89\00:08:52.33 that God wants us to have. 00:08:52.36\00:08:54.50 And we can't look at each other anymore, 00:08:54.53\00:08:56.13 we can't see Jesus but every animal display 00:08:56.16\00:08:58.57 some character quality God wants us to have. 00:08:58.60\00:09:01.37 And at that time, we had a beloved dog 00:09:01.40\00:09:03.00 who's recently died but... 00:09:03.04\00:09:05.07 You know, dogs can show you what forgiveness is like, 00:09:05.11\00:09:07.41 they never hold a grudge, they never hold a grudge, 00:09:07.44\00:09:10.45 and they always want to be with you 00:09:10.48\00:09:12.45 and are always having a forgiving spirit no matter. 00:09:12.48\00:09:15.35 And I got to thinking about that what qualities 00:09:15.38\00:09:18.85 do animals display that God wants me to have? 00:09:18.89\00:09:22.89 You know, when you said that my initial thought was, 00:09:22.92\00:09:25.46 "Oh, no, that's ridiculous. Insects what can..." 00:09:25.49\00:09:28.40 And then I thought, "Go to the ant, thou sluggard." 00:09:28.43\00:09:32.90 Yeah, so it's there, it's amazing. 00:09:32.93\00:09:36.04 Yeah, so that's a really deep point. 00:09:36.07\00:09:39.01 And my favorite Old Testament description 00:09:39.04\00:09:41.74 of this is in 1 Kings 4 when it talks about Solomon 00:09:41.78\00:09:44.71 being the wisest man in the earth 00:09:44.75\00:09:46.88 and if people from all around the world 00:09:46.92\00:09:48.85 came to see and listen to Solomon's wisdom. 00:09:48.88\00:09:50.99 And then it says what he talked about. 00:09:51.02\00:09:52.69 It says he talked about trees, about flowers, 00:09:52.72\00:09:55.12 about the animals. 00:09:55.16\00:09:56.79 And people came from all around the world 00:09:56.83\00:09:58.69 to learn the Wisdom of Solomon. 00:09:58.73\00:10:00.06 What does he talk about? 00:10:00.10\00:10:01.80 Wonders of creation. There we go. 00:10:01.83\00:10:03.80 Well, thank you so much for joining us, Dr. Davidson. 00:10:03.83\00:10:06.74 I could talk about these things 00:10:06.77\00:10:09.94 probably for the rest of my life. 00:10:09.97\00:10:11.37 It is a wonderful topic. Yeah. 00:10:11.41\00:10:13.21 You know, a thought occurred to me 00:10:13.24\00:10:15.38 is after Jesus did the miracle with a fish and the loaves, 00:10:15.41\00:10:19.81 He told His disciples to gather together 00:10:19.85\00:10:25.25 the remnants of what was left, He never wasted anything. 00:10:25.29\00:10:30.06 And if we waste our resources that God has given us, 00:10:30.09\00:10:34.46 if we aren't taking good care of it, 00:10:34.50\00:10:37.47 I think we're not following in the footsteps of Jesus. 00:10:37.50\00:10:40.64 I have to agree with you. 00:10:40.67\00:10:42.00 You know, there's something ugly 00:10:42.04\00:10:43.37 about wanton wastefulness and something beautiful 00:10:43.41\00:10:49.84 actually about conserving what God has given to us 00:10:49.88\00:10:54.78 in such unbelievable abundance in this world. 00:10:54.82\00:11:00.69 I'm just amazed 00:11:00.72\00:11:02.69 at the gratuitous beauty these glorious relationships 00:11:02.72\00:11:08.30 and just the abundance of resources 00:11:08.33\00:11:11.83 that we have to support our lives 00:11:11.87\00:11:15.17 and the lives of other creatures. 00:11:15.20\00:11:18.31 And that's something that we need to keep in mind, 00:11:18.34\00:11:20.78 it's not just for us, it's for everything. 00:11:20.81\00:11:23.85 Remember the first angel's message says, 00:11:23.88\00:11:27.68 "Worship the Creator." 00:11:27.72\00:11:29.85 When we worship God in the beauty of His holiness, 00:11:29.88\00:11:32.82 we will be appreciating what He has done for us. 00:11:32.85\00:11:37.36 Thank you for joining us. 00:11:37.39\00:11:38.73
