Welcome back to the Creator Revealed. 00:00:03.93\00:00:05.80 We've been talking today about our wonderful Creator 00:00:05.83\00:00:09.87 and all the beautiful creatures that He formed 00:00:09.90\00:00:13.01 from the dust of the ground for our enjoyment. 00:00:13.04\00:00:16.78 Exactly, you know, the diversity of life 00:00:16.81\00:00:19.75 is truly amazing. 00:00:19.78\00:00:22.22 It is. 00:00:22.25\00:00:23.59 And anyone who isn't just blown away 00:00:23.62\00:00:26.12 not just by the diversity but the beauty of what's there, 00:00:26.15\00:00:29.52 I don't know, it seems to me 00:00:29.56\00:00:30.89 that they've lost their soul in a way. 00:00:30.93\00:00:34.20 But there is this question that we have in our minds, 00:00:34.23\00:00:38.40 as Christians, I think all people. 00:00:38.43\00:00:40.67 And that is, how do we relate to these other creatures? 00:00:40.70\00:00:44.44 What does the Bible tell us about that? 00:00:44.47\00:00:47.44 And to assist us with that, we have Dr. Jo Ann Davidson. 00:00:47.48\00:00:51.88 She is a professor of Systematic Theology 00:00:51.91\00:00:55.55 at the Seventh-day Adventist 00:00:55.58\00:00:57.52 Theological Seminary at Andrews University. 00:00:57.55\00:01:01.06 And I'm delighted that she is joining us 00:01:01.09\00:01:04.99 to discuss this really important topic. 00:01:05.03\00:01:08.83 So, Dr. Davidson, 00:01:08.86\00:01:10.77 one of the arguments that I've heard is, 00:01:10.80\00:01:14.40 God made human beings to have dominion 00:01:14.44\00:01:17.51 over the rest of the creation, 00:01:17.54\00:01:19.14 over the other animals and so on. 00:01:19.17\00:01:21.21 So we really don't have any responsibility 00:01:21.24\00:01:26.41 to be caring for these creatures. 00:01:26.45\00:01:30.25 It is just, 00:01:30.29\00:01:32.02 you know, the earth is ours to do with what we want. 00:01:32.05\00:01:36.06 And I'm wondering, 00:01:36.09\00:01:37.43 is that really a biblical position or not? 00:01:37.46\00:01:41.16 You know, that a lot of people have that position 00:01:41.20\00:01:43.63 but they haven't learnt to read the text carefully. 00:01:43.67\00:01:46.50 If you look at Genesis 1, 00:01:46.53\00:01:49.44 and God gives a definition of rulership, 00:01:49.47\00:01:51.91 even before He creates humans and animals. 00:01:51.94\00:01:54.28 On day four, He says the sun is to rule the day, 00:01:54.31\00:01:57.68 and He put it in place so it can conserve life 00:01:57.71\00:02:00.45 and bring forth life in the ground. 00:02:00.48\00:02:03.52 And so when God asked us to rule, 00:02:03.55\00:02:05.05 He's warning us to display the same benevolence 00:02:05.09\00:02:08.52 that the sun does. 00:02:08.56\00:02:10.93 Also I think, 00:02:10.96\00:02:12.83 it's tragic that though people believe in God as the Creator, 00:02:12.86\00:02:17.63 the ideas of evolution 00:02:17.67\00:02:19.00 have suddenly affected their thinking, 00:02:19.03\00:02:21.34 often without them realizing it, perhaps. 00:02:21.37\00:02:23.74 And we just think that 00:02:23.77\00:02:25.11 animals are just little lower than we are, 00:02:25.14\00:02:27.18 and we finally advanced to a higher stage, 00:02:27.21\00:02:29.64 and we're really of more value and more worth, 00:02:29.68\00:02:31.78 and that's not right either. 00:02:31.81\00:02:33.65 That's not right either. 00:02:33.68\00:02:35.22 The creation story is so beautiful 00:02:35.25\00:02:37.19 because the first three days, God creates habitats. 00:02:37.22\00:02:41.29 And then the last three days, He fills each of those habitats 00:02:41.32\00:02:44.29 in turn with the creatures that live there. 00:02:44.33\00:02:47.13 And then He gives both humans and animals 00:02:47.16\00:02:50.57 a plant-based, violent-free diet, 00:02:50.60\00:02:53.54 and then He finishes day six, rubbing His... 00:02:53.57\00:02:56.00 You can almost see Him rubbing His hands together saying, 00:02:56.04\00:02:57.71 "Oh, this is very good." 00:02:57.74\00:02:59.81 And He gives animals and humans the same diet. 00:02:59.84\00:03:03.61 And on day five interestingly, 00:03:03.65\00:03:06.65 He talks to the animals. 00:03:06.68\00:03:08.82 It says in Genesis 1:20 to 22, 00:03:08.85\00:03:11.09 God created all the great sea creatures 00:03:11.12\00:03:13.05 of the sea and the air. 00:03:13.09\00:03:14.76 And then it says, "And God blessed them saying, 00:03:14.79\00:03:18.93 "Be fruitful and multiply." 00:03:18.96\00:03:21.20 Well, who is God talking to? 00:03:21.23\00:03:23.06 There was no humans around to listen, 00:03:23.10\00:03:25.20 and He gives the same blessing, only a day later to humans. 00:03:25.23\00:03:28.70 And He puts them in a world filled with new life, 00:03:28.74\00:03:32.41 and tells them to be fruitful 00:03:32.44\00:03:34.84 and multiplied the same blessing 00:03:34.88\00:03:36.61 He'd given to day five. 00:03:36.64\00:03:38.68 And if you go to the Book of Psalms, 00:03:38.71\00:03:41.88 over and over again, dozens of times, 00:03:41.92\00:03:44.45 the psalmist praised God for the works of His hands. 00:03:44.49\00:03:48.06 The works of your hands are the works of His hands, 00:03:48.09\00:03:50.33 referring back to that passage you referred to, Tim, 00:03:50.36\00:03:52.96 about God creating the creatures 00:03:52.99\00:03:55.06 from the dust of the ground, 00:03:55.10\00:03:56.43 the works of His hands. 00:03:56.46\00:03:57.87 And He's so excited about it and praises God, 00:03:57.90\00:04:02.04 it just draws forth praise over and over again, 00:04:02.07\00:04:04.94 the works of God's hands. 00:04:04.97\00:04:06.31 In fact, there's one choir in Psalm 1:48 00:04:06.34\00:04:10.01 that speaks of humans praising God. 00:04:10.05\00:04:12.95 But before it mentions humans praising God, 00:04:12.98\00:04:14.95 it talks about the animals praising God. 00:04:14.98\00:04:17.42 And praises venting to the great Creator 00:04:17.45\00:04:19.45 from all His creatures. 00:04:19.49\00:04:21.62 It's just unfortunate 00:04:21.66\00:04:22.99 that we have such degraded hearing 00:04:23.02\00:04:26.90 that we can't hear all the praises going to God. 00:04:26.93\00:04:29.10 In fact, one scientist wrote, 00:04:29.13\00:04:31.23 "As we're destroying these different species of the earth, 00:04:31.27\00:04:34.74 we're muting God's praise, muting God's praise." 00:04:34.77\00:04:38.14 That's really kind of a poetic way, 00:04:38.17\00:04:41.64 kind of a depressing thought when you think about it. 00:04:41.68\00:04:47.42 I wonder myself, 00:04:47.45\00:04:49.58 how is God going to respond to us 00:04:49.62\00:04:54.52 if we are destroying these works of art 00:04:54.56\00:04:58.13 that He's created? 00:04:58.16\00:04:59.63 As a scientist, 00:04:59.66\00:05:01.00 I taught to think about them more as in an engineering 00:05:01.03\00:05:04.83 almost sort of sense but also the beauty, 00:05:04.87\00:05:07.70 and yeah, this praise. 00:05:07.74\00:05:09.94 What kind of specific instructions, 00:05:09.97\00:05:13.24 if any, does God give us 00:05:13.27\00:05:15.11 about how we should be treating animals, for example? 00:05:15.14\00:05:20.82 Well, if you look at the story of the flood, 00:05:20.85\00:05:24.55 it's interesting to me 00:05:24.59\00:05:26.12 that when God had to destroy sin 00:05:26.15\00:05:28.12 because it was so corrupt... 00:05:28.16\00:05:29.86 And the word there in the original language 00:05:29.89\00:05:32.23 is the strongest word 00:05:32.26\00:05:33.60 that could be used for violence and evil. 00:05:33.63\00:05:36.23 They were corrupted that God had to destroy it, 00:05:36.26\00:05:39.57 but He wanted to make a way of escape. 00:05:39.60\00:05:41.57 God never destroys sin without making a way of escape. 00:05:41.60\00:05:44.64 In this case, He had Noah build an ark. 00:05:44.67\00:05:46.78 And then He told Noah, 00:05:46.81\00:05:48.94 "Please bring the animals in 00:05:48.98\00:05:50.31 because I want to spare them too." 00:05:50.35\00:05:52.35 And so God, 00:05:52.38\00:05:54.48 as He prepares to rid the earth of violence and evil, 00:05:54.52\00:05:57.95 He has an ark for humans and animals to be preserved in. 00:05:57.99\00:06:02.26 Then after the flood when they come out of the ark, 00:06:02.29\00:06:04.66 it's Chapter 9, it's very interesting. 00:06:04.69\00:06:07.63 God gives a major covenant statement there. 00:06:07.66\00:06:11.83 And four times in that statement, He says, 00:06:11.87\00:06:15.40 "I'm making this covenant with you, and your family, 00:06:15.44\00:06:18.77 and all the animals with you in the ark." 00:06:18.81\00:06:21.24 And He lists them, He mentions them, 00:06:21.28\00:06:23.08 many of them by name. 00:06:23.11\00:06:24.45 Four times, He repeats this in one covenant statement. 00:06:24.48\00:06:27.98 And we're knowing now 00:06:28.02\00:06:29.35 as we're learning to read biblical narratives 00:06:29.38\00:06:30.72 that anytime something is repeated, 00:06:30.75\00:06:32.29 it's a key point. 00:06:32.32\00:06:33.66 The ancients didn't have underlining and italics 00:06:33.69\00:06:36.16 and bolding letters 00:06:36.19\00:06:38.49 to emphasize something important, 00:06:38.53\00:06:40.33 so instead, they would repeat it. 00:06:40.36\00:06:41.86 And in this case, God four times repeats it. 00:06:41.90\00:06:44.47 He has a covenant with all the creatures He's made, 00:06:44.50\00:06:47.24 humans and animals. 00:06:47.27\00:06:48.90 You know what? 00:06:48.94\00:06:50.41 Oh, I'm sorry. Go ahead. 00:06:50.44\00:06:51.77 Go ahead. I just wanna add with that. 00:06:51.81\00:06:53.98 When God gives the Ten Commandments, 00:06:54.01\00:06:55.78 the fourth commandment is the Sabbath blessing, 00:06:55.81\00:06:58.61 and He includes the animals even in the Sabbath blessing 00:06:58.65\00:07:00.88 that they deserve to rest too, they deserve to rest. 00:07:00.92\00:07:03.99 And the Old Testament laws, the Mosaic laws, 00:07:04.02\00:07:06.89 marvelous how God says. 00:07:06.92\00:07:08.26 I love some of them. 00:07:08.29\00:07:09.72 I'll repeat one of my favorite, God says, 00:07:09.76\00:07:11.89 "If you see a donkey overloaded 00:07:11.93\00:07:14.40 with a heavy load and he falls down, 00:07:14.43\00:07:16.23 you need to help that donkey back to its feet, 00:07:16.26\00:07:18.43 even though that donkey belongs to your enemy." 00:07:18.47\00:07:21.64 Yeah. 00:07:21.67\00:07:23.00 I guess the text that jumps to my mind 00:07:23.04\00:07:25.91 is the one that says that 00:07:25.94\00:07:27.28 you shouldn't muzzle the ox that treads the corn. 00:07:27.31\00:07:31.71 You know, these animals are worthy 00:07:31.75\00:07:37.39 of their wages in a way as well. 00:07:37.42\00:07:43.06 They should be allowed to enjoy the harvest 00:07:43.09\00:07:44.83 that they're reaping. 00:07:44.86\00:07:46.19 Yes. 00:07:46.23\00:07:47.66 They're ostensibly working for humans, 00:07:47.70\00:07:49.93 but they're part of the team, 00:07:49.96\00:07:51.47 and they deserve to enjoy the harvest too. 00:07:51.50\00:07:53.74 So if we sort of say, 00:07:53.77\00:07:56.67 "Well, these animals are of such great value, 00:07:56.71\00:08:00.54 and they're very much like us," 00:08:00.58\00:08:04.28 then what does that do to human beings because... 00:08:04.31\00:08:08.72 Does it degrade us to say, "Hey, you know, 00:08:08.75\00:08:14.26 we're not as special perhaps as we thought we were 00:08:14.29\00:08:16.99 or how are we supposed to think about that? 00:08:17.03\00:08:22.90 Well, you know, that's the idea of hierarchy, 00:08:22.93\00:08:25.33 thinking that the people up higher are more important, 00:08:25.37\00:08:27.37 but God has a different system, I think. 00:08:27.40\00:08:29.97 He gives us the privilege of caring for His creation. 00:08:30.01\00:08:34.98 And the animals depend on us for that, 00:08:35.01\00:08:37.78 and we should be caring for the creation 00:08:37.81\00:08:40.85 just like God Himself 00:08:40.88\00:08:42.22 doesn't say it's very, very good. 00:08:42.25\00:08:44.12 Instead of thinking that, 00:08:44.15\00:08:46.15 because we supposedly have more intelligence 00:08:46.19\00:08:49.49 that we are above them 00:08:49.52\00:08:52.06 and don't have to care for them. 00:08:52.09\00:08:53.76 But, you know, this thing of intelligence 00:08:53.80\00:08:55.13 is really significant to me 00:08:55.16\00:08:56.97 because scientists of which you are a noble one, 00:08:57.00\00:09:00.04 Dr. Tim, are coming out with many, many books now 00:09:00.07\00:09:03.44 about the intelligence of animals. 00:09:03.47\00:09:05.04 And like the last one I read, I love the title. 00:09:05.07\00:09:07.54 It said the Wise Guys of the Avian World, 00:09:07.58\00:09:10.65 Ravens and Crows. 00:09:10.68\00:09:12.15 And it talks there about 00:09:12.18\00:09:13.52 how the scientists used to think 00:09:13.55\00:09:14.88 that monkeys were closest to humans in intelligence, 00:09:14.92\00:09:17.59 but now they realize that 00:09:17.62\00:09:18.95 ravens are smarter than monkeys. 00:09:18.99\00:09:20.76 And the fact that... 00:09:20.79\00:09:22.52 And tongue in cheek, the author says, 00:09:22.56\00:09:24.69 "Now when you call someone a birdbrain, 00:09:24.73\00:09:26.46 that's a compliment, 00:09:26.49\00:09:27.83 because they're really smart." 00:09:27.86\00:09:29.36 Oh, it is amazing how smart they are. 00:09:29.40\00:09:31.27 But, Jo Ann, you will agree. 00:09:31.30\00:09:34.04 Humans are special in a way 00:09:34.07\00:09:35.47 because we were created in the image of God. 00:09:35.50\00:09:39.81 So there's a form and a function for everything. 00:09:39.84\00:09:43.91 That's right. 00:09:43.95\00:09:45.28 And when we see how God cares for the animals 00:09:45.31\00:09:48.28 as well as He cares for humans, that should give us a lesson 00:09:48.32\00:09:51.59 on how we should care for the animals. 00:09:51.62\00:09:54.19 If we're created in the image of the Creator, 00:09:54.22\00:09:55.79 we need to have the same care, 00:09:55.82\00:09:57.39 and love, and concern for them as He does. 00:09:57.43\00:10:00.16 Okay, well, thank you so much for joining us, Dr. Davidson. 00:10:00.20\00:10:03.57 It's been a privilege to hear your thoughts 00:10:03.60\00:10:06.50 and the way that you have bought out these lessons 00:10:06.53\00:10:09.87 that are contained there in God's Word. 00:10:09.90\00:10:12.91 I am absolutely convinced 00:10:12.94\00:10:15.64 that we have a duty, as Christians, 00:10:15.68\00:10:20.68 to care for the entire creation but especially 00:10:20.72\00:10:24.12 these intelligent other beings 00:10:24.15\00:10:28.39 that inhabit the earth with us. 00:10:28.42\00:10:30.46 You know, it's so funny, because you and I were talking, 00:10:30.49\00:10:33.60 I think yesterday, we were talking about 00:10:33.63\00:10:36.43 the intelligence of animals in pigs. 00:10:36.46\00:10:39.57 You know, like how intelligent a pig is. 00:10:39.60\00:10:42.84 I want a pet pig. 00:10:42.87\00:10:44.21 But, you know, 00:10:44.24\00:10:45.57 I have never lived in a household 00:10:45.61\00:10:47.94 where the true bosses of the house 00:10:47.98\00:10:50.91 would allow me to have one. 00:10:50.95\00:10:53.82 You're saying your mother and your wife won't allow it. 00:10:53.85\00:10:56.22 You know, sometimes I think they just don't understand me. 00:10:56.25\00:10:59.65 But we don't always appreciate the intelligence of an animal. 00:10:59.69\00:11:03.43 And you know, my mother always told me, 00:11:03.46\00:11:06.66 "Don't trust someone that is not good to animals." 00:11:06.70\00:11:10.33 Exactly. 00:11:10.37\00:11:11.70 That was one of the core pieces of advice I gave my daughter. 00:11:11.73\00:11:15.87 Do not date anybody who is cruel to animals 00:11:15.90\00:11:18.47 because they will be cruel to you as well. 00:11:18.51\00:11:21.24 At the same time when you see kindness to animals, 00:11:21.28\00:11:24.78 and when we ourselves 00:11:24.81\00:11:27.78 develop these amazing relationships 00:11:27.82\00:11:30.82 that we can have... 00:11:30.85\00:11:32.19 I talked about my dog, Jack, 00:11:32.22\00:11:34.26 but I still have our other dog, Jill. 00:11:34.29\00:11:36.86 You know, and the joy and the love 00:11:36.89\00:11:40.63 that we share with each other, 00:11:40.66\00:11:42.30 even though we're not the same species, 00:11:42.33\00:11:44.53 it is a beautiful thing. 00:11:44.57\00:11:46.27 And I suspect it model something 00:11:46.30\00:11:48.60 about the relationship 00:11:48.64\00:11:49.97 that we ourselves can have with God. 00:11:50.01\00:11:51.64 Amen. 00:11:51.67\00:11:53.01 And I think in many ways, it makes us, 00:11:53.04\00:11:55.88 as we are totally dependent upon God, 00:11:55.91\00:11:58.68 when you have any creature 00:11:58.71\00:12:00.15 that's totally dependent upon you, 00:12:00.18\00:12:02.25 you can't help but love them for some reason. 00:12:02.28\00:12:04.82 So it's just an idea, a model of how much God loves us. 00:12:04.85\00:12:10.13 We hope that you've been blessed today, 00:12:10.16\00:12:12.23 and you will join us next time. 00:12:12.26\00:12:14.16
