Welcome back to "The Creator Revealed." 00:00:03.16\00:00:05.47 I was telling Tim, 00:00:05.50\00:00:06.84 I don't know if it is his doctorate in biology 00:00:06.87\00:00:10.01 or if it's his accent 00:00:10.04\00:00:11.37 that makes him look so intelligent but guess what? 00:00:11.41\00:00:14.44 We've got his boss with us today 00:00:14.48\00:00:16.95 and now you've got some competition. 00:00:16.98\00:00:19.58 There we go. 00:00:19.61\00:00:20.95 Well, you know, it's fun 00:00:20.98\00:00:22.68 working at the Geoscience Research Institute 00:00:22.72\00:00:24.75 because I have a group of colleagues 00:00:24.79\00:00:28.09 who are so interesting and know so much, 00:00:28.12\00:00:32.59 trust me, we keep one another humble... 00:00:32.63\00:00:34.96 I bet. 00:00:35.00\00:00:36.33 And it's enjoyable to discuss the very things 00:00:36.36\00:00:41.67 that we are talking about in this 00:00:41.70\00:00:45.41 The Creator Revealed series. 00:00:45.44\00:00:48.44 Now, up until this point 00:00:48.48\00:00:52.15 in this particular episode, 00:00:52.18\00:00:54.65 we've been talking about design in fossils, 00:00:54.68\00:00:57.62 but I've been concentrating mainly on dinosaurs 00:00:57.65\00:01:02.79 and the idea that 00:01:02.82\00:01:06.13 hey, you know, we find organisms living today, 00:01:06.16\00:01:08.73 they look designed and we find fossils 00:01:08.76\00:01:10.83 of those same organisms... 00:01:10.87\00:01:13.17 Designed the same way. 00:01:13.20\00:01:14.54 So we'd expect that they, 00:01:14.57\00:01:15.90 you know, it's just sort of reasonably consistent 00:01:15.94\00:01:18.27 to believe that in fact, 00:01:18.31\00:01:21.51 those fossils represent designed organisms as well. 00:01:21.54\00:01:26.48 Dr. Gibson has made a study of a kind of fossil 00:01:26.51\00:01:32.45 called an ammonite. 00:01:32.49\00:01:34.49 Now, that sounds like something from the Bible. 00:01:34.52\00:01:35.86 Yeah, it does. 00:01:35.89\00:01:37.23 But let's let him explain these to us a little bit. 00:01:37.26\00:01:40.93 Welcome, Dr. Gibson. 00:01:40.96\00:01:44.33 Thank you. 00:01:44.37\00:01:45.70 I just happened to have here with me 00:01:45.73\00:01:48.40 a fossil ammonite shell. 00:01:48.44\00:01:51.04 It's a interesting... 00:01:51.07\00:01:53.81 That looks sort of like a snail. 00:01:53.84\00:01:57.95 Yeah, except it's kind of flat. 00:01:57.98\00:02:00.28 There's some flat snails too, yeah. 00:02:00.32\00:02:03.39 It's almost like a snail is. 00:02:03.42\00:02:06.55 Notice that it has a spiral shape to it. 00:02:06.59\00:02:10.13 You notice that spiral there, that's kind of cool. 00:02:10.16\00:02:12.99 I kind of like the shape of this. 00:02:13.03\00:02:14.76 Reminds me of a chambered nautilus, 00:02:14.80\00:02:16.70 but you probably have heard about not long ago. 00:02:16.73\00:02:20.50 There's some differences between the nautilus 00:02:20.54\00:02:22.80 and the ammonite. 00:02:22.84\00:02:25.17 So there are different kinds of things 00:02:25.21\00:02:27.28 but there's a lot of similarity too. 00:02:27.31\00:02:29.81 I just have this little toy here 00:02:33.05\00:02:35.58 that illustrates what the thing looked like. 00:02:35.62\00:02:38.95 If I can get it here where you can... 00:02:38.99\00:02:40.32 So it looks little bit like a squid or an octopus. 00:02:40.36\00:02:42.79 Yes. 00:02:42.82\00:02:44.43 Yeah. 00:02:44.46\00:02:45.79 In fact it is a lot like a squid 00:02:45.83\00:02:47.66 or an octopus with a shell on it. 00:02:47.70\00:02:50.70 It's kind of an unusual thing, 00:02:50.73\00:02:52.90 but notice that spiral shape again 00:02:52.93\00:02:55.37 and I kind of like that spiral shape, 00:02:55.40\00:02:57.74 It's interesting. 00:02:57.77\00:03:00.08 And one of the interesting things about it is, 00:03:00.11\00:03:04.25 it has a mathematical basis. 00:03:04.28\00:03:06.72 There's an actual, you can write an equation for a spiral. 00:03:06.75\00:03:11.15 Well I think, 00:03:11.19\00:03:12.52 well, that got created 00:03:12.55\00:03:16.19 by a great mathematician. 00:03:16.22\00:03:19.19 It's great to think though, 00:03:19.23\00:03:20.93 that God is such a genius at mathematics, 00:03:20.96\00:03:24.93 not just because of the spiral of this, of course, 00:03:24.97\00:03:27.37 but because mathematics is found throughout nature. 00:03:27.40\00:03:30.54 Yeah, that's true, 00:03:30.57\00:03:31.91 it's really kind of a remarkable thing. 00:03:31.94\00:03:33.78 That in all living things, 00:03:33.81\00:03:36.01 we find that mathematics can describe things that... 00:03:36.04\00:03:41.28 Yes. 00:03:41.32\00:03:42.65 That why do they have to... 00:03:42.68\00:03:44.15 Why does it have to be that way? 00:03:44.19\00:03:45.92 Well, it probably doesn't. 00:03:45.95\00:03:47.76 It's just that mathematics 00:03:47.79\00:03:51.03 is the basis of the universe apparently 00:03:51.06\00:03:54.43 but also in living things quite, quite incredible. 00:03:54.46\00:03:58.93 Yeah. So I think it tells us something about the Creator. 00:03:58.97\00:04:02.44 He's a mathematician. 00:04:02.47\00:04:04.34 He invented mathematics, I guess. 00:04:04.37\00:04:07.44 Well, the beauty I should say the interest 00:04:07.48\00:04:12.95 and I think it's beauty too, interest in that shell, 00:04:12.98\00:04:16.05 a spiral shape is kind of interesting. 00:04:16.08\00:04:19.79 In fact, I think, it's okay to say that it's beautiful. 00:04:19.82\00:04:23.66 And that beauty that I see in the ammonite shell, 00:04:23.69\00:04:27.03 I see it in the nautilus shell, 00:04:27.06\00:04:29.20 the chambered nautilus and other things. 00:04:29.23\00:04:32.40 It makes me wonder why should nature be beautiful, 00:04:32.43\00:04:37.97 and why am I able to appreciate that beauty? 00:04:38.01\00:04:43.14 I know, 00:04:43.18\00:04:44.51 I've got a couple of house cats. 00:04:44.55\00:04:47.38 I don't see them admiring beautiful things. 00:04:47.42\00:04:51.42 I haven't noticed other animals doing that, why me and you? 00:04:51.45\00:04:55.82 Why do we appreciate beauty, and I think it's because 00:04:55.86\00:04:59.86 we were created in the image of a God 00:04:59.89\00:05:04.37 who Himself appreciates and loves beauty. 00:05:04.40\00:05:08.64 And I find that interesting. 00:05:08.67\00:05:12.37 It is interesting that again... 00:05:12.41\00:05:14.01 The creator God. 00:05:14.04\00:05:16.11 An unnecessary correlation really, isn't it? 00:05:16.14\00:05:19.25 The creation is beautiful and we have minds 00:05:19.28\00:05:23.49 that are capable of appreciating that beauty. 00:05:23.52\00:05:28.26 It doesn't seem like it would have to be that way 00:05:28.29\00:05:30.93 because of the laws of physics 00:05:30.96\00:05:33.03 or maybe some other explanation like natural selection. 00:05:33.06\00:05:36.67 Why? 00:05:36.70\00:05:38.03 Why would it be that way? 00:05:38.07\00:05:39.73 Well, if you believe 00:05:39.77\00:05:41.34 that the character of the Creator 00:05:41.37\00:05:43.87 involves beauty 00:05:43.91\00:05:48.94 and wanting to give pleasure to other beings, 00:05:48.98\00:05:54.22 then it makes an awful lot of sense. 00:05:54.25\00:05:57.49 But if you're not talking about something 00:05:57.52\00:05:58.95 like the God of the Bible, 00:05:58.99\00:06:00.32 it makes no sense at all. 00:06:00.36\00:06:01.72 That's true. 00:06:01.76\00:06:04.06 If we go back to that... 00:06:04.09\00:06:06.23 I'm sorry, go ahead. 00:06:06.26\00:06:07.66 If we go back to that ammonite and take a look. 00:06:07.70\00:06:11.50 You'll see he's got an eye. 00:06:11.53\00:06:14.34 And look at now, of course, this is just a toy. 00:06:14.37\00:06:17.97 But it's believed that the eye of the ammonite 00:06:18.01\00:06:20.14 did look a lot like that 00:06:20.18\00:06:21.51 and part of the reason for that, 00:06:21.54\00:06:23.18 of course, is by comparison of the chambered nautilus 00:06:23.21\00:06:25.61 where we can see the eye 00:06:25.65\00:06:27.62 and see that it's quite technically advanced, 00:06:27.65\00:06:31.82 quite sophisticated. 00:06:31.85\00:06:33.86 So there's another thing we can learn about design 00:06:33.89\00:06:37.69 in the ammonite. 00:06:37.73\00:06:39.39 The eye is carefully crafted 00:06:39.43\00:06:42.53 with not only physical parts 00:06:42.56\00:06:46.80 that are put together in a functional sequence 00:06:46.84\00:06:49.70 but molecular machines that are in the, 00:06:49.74\00:06:53.04 you know, where we can't see them particularly 00:06:53.07\00:06:55.28 but the idea of vision is spectacular. 00:06:55.31\00:06:59.35 Our engineering feat, 00:06:59.38\00:07:02.98 and I see the Creator must be an engineer 00:07:03.02\00:07:06.62 beyond our experience. 00:07:06.65\00:07:08.92 Yeah, when you start looking at organisms, 00:07:08.96\00:07:11.23 you gonna appreciate them all the way down 00:07:11.26\00:07:13.73 from the gross structure, the environment they live in, 00:07:13.76\00:07:18.17 all the way down into the actual molecules 00:07:18.20\00:07:21.17 that they're made of. 00:07:21.20\00:07:22.54 Quite remarkable. 00:07:22.57\00:07:23.91 So what's inside that shell? 00:07:23.94\00:07:25.97 What's going on with it? 00:07:26.01\00:07:29.48 Well, if you split the shell open 00:07:29.51\00:07:32.41 you'll find... 00:07:32.45\00:07:33.78 And here's an example of an ammonite 00:07:33.82\00:07:35.85 with its shell split open. 00:07:35.88\00:07:38.79 It's very beautiful. 00:07:38.82\00:07:40.16 You I'll see that it has a series... 00:07:40.19\00:07:42.46 You can see that spiral very clearly there 00:07:42.49\00:07:45.73 and you can see that has a series of chambers, 00:07:45.76\00:07:49.36 the little lines dividing the chambers, 00:07:49.40\00:07:52.70 it seems that the animals started out living 00:07:52.73\00:07:55.10 in the smallest one at the center of the spiral 00:07:55.14\00:07:59.24 and then as it outgrew the chamber, 00:07:59.27\00:08:02.04 it added another one and so, in a spiral, 00:08:02.08\00:08:06.31 so the spiral grew as the animal grew, 00:08:06.35\00:08:10.52 leaving a series of chambers behind it, 00:08:10.55\00:08:14.89 the animal living in the outermost chamber. 00:08:14.92\00:08:20.50 That is kind of cool. 00:08:20.53\00:08:22.86 And so when you have those empty chambers, you might ask, 00:08:22.90\00:08:28.07 well, is there anything you can do 00:08:28.10\00:08:30.37 with those empty chambers? 00:08:30.41\00:08:32.67 And the answer is yes, 00:08:32.71\00:08:35.51 you can fill them with gas or water, 00:08:35.54\00:08:38.95 pumping them back and forth through a little tube. 00:08:38.98\00:08:43.75 And by doing that 00:08:43.79\00:08:45.12 you can regulate the density of the ammonite 00:08:45.15\00:08:49.56 and then it can move up or down in the water. 00:08:49.59\00:08:53.96 And so it could control the buoyancy, 00:08:54.00\00:08:57.77 its ability to move up and down the water 00:08:57.80\00:09:00.44 by controlling the amount of gas 00:09:00.47\00:09:03.37 in these little chambers. 00:09:03.41\00:09:05.77 So basically, go ahead, I'm sorry. 00:09:05.81\00:09:07.14 I was just gonna say, 00:09:07.18\00:09:08.51 there's a definite function to the design 00:09:08.54\00:09:11.58 and that's what we see in everything God created. 00:09:11.61\00:09:15.65 What's interesting to me is the combining 00:09:15.68\00:09:18.49 of this very practical thing that allows this organism 00:09:18.52\00:09:23.49 to decide where it's going to be in the water 00:09:23.53\00:09:25.93 by adjusting the amount of gas inside these chambers 00:09:25.96\00:09:30.90 and yet the beauty as well. 00:09:30.93\00:09:33.34 It's not an ugly thing. 00:09:33.37\00:09:35.84 It turns out to be a beautiful and practical thing. 00:09:35.87\00:09:39.41 Form and function going together. 00:09:39.44\00:09:41.24 Yeah. Yes. 00:09:41.28\00:09:43.04 And then if you could imagine 00:09:43.08\00:09:45.38 this shell with an animal in it, 00:09:45.41\00:09:47.85 the animal living near the end here in the... 00:09:47.88\00:09:51.95 Probably in a chamber that isn't preserved here. 00:09:51.99\00:09:55.56 But, and that means all these other chambers 00:09:55.59\00:09:58.66 are filled with gas. 00:09:58.69\00:10:01.00 So that would tell you that the chamber's filled with gas 00:10:01.03\00:10:04.77 with the upper most in the water. 00:10:04.80\00:10:07.70 So you could predict that the animal would be 00:10:07.74\00:10:09.90 floating around something like this, 00:10:09.94\00:10:12.37 with it, most of the chambers above it 00:10:12.41\00:10:14.94 and the animal on the bottom side. 00:10:14.98\00:10:16.95 Fabulous, so it's actually orienting itself 00:10:16.98\00:10:19.31 as a result of it. 00:10:19.35\00:10:20.68 But that would also be a protective designing, right? 00:10:20.72\00:10:23.15 I guess so. Thank you very much. 00:10:37.93\00:10:41.40 You know, it's just so fascinating to me that 00:10:41.44\00:10:44.31 what makes us different than animals? 00:10:44.34\00:10:46.17 We've already discussed that animals and humans 00:10:46.21\00:10:49.78 were made of the dust of the ground. 00:10:49.81\00:10:52.81 We both have the breath of the life in us, 00:10:52.85\00:10:56.95 but what makes us different is that God created us 00:10:56.99\00:11:00.56 with a specific function. 00:11:00.59\00:11:03.26 And we see that 00:11:03.29\00:11:04.63 everything God creates has a function and a form 00:11:04.66\00:11:08.56 and this is really fascinating. 00:11:08.60\00:11:09.93 Yeah. 00:11:09.96\00:11:11.30 Well, in the case of human beings 00:11:11.33\00:11:12.67 what I love is, 00:11:12.70\00:11:14.04 He gave us this particular role in His creation 00:11:14.07\00:11:17.31 and function in His creation 00:11:17.34\00:11:19.21 and He equipped us for that role. 00:11:19.24\00:11:22.08 So our ability for example to do mathematics, 00:11:22.11\00:11:25.61 this complex abstract mathematics, 00:11:25.65\00:11:28.65 is useful to us as we care for the creation, 00:11:28.68\00:11:34.49 as we study the creation 00:11:34.52\00:11:36.49 and we learn so much more about God's wisdom 00:11:36.52\00:11:42.10 and God's character from these incredible things. 00:11:42.13\00:11:45.83 Even these fossils where the design is so clear 00:11:45.87\00:11:51.07 and so beautiful at the same time. 00:11:51.11\00:11:54.08 He is an amazing God. He is the artist. 00:11:54.11\00:11:57.25 Yes. 00:11:57.28\00:11:58.61 Well, I want to thank our audience for joining us 00:11:58.65\00:12:02.38 for this particular episode. 00:12:02.42\00:12:04.09 If you're fascinated by fossils, 00:12:04.12\00:12:05.85 well then you're a lot like me. 00:12:05.89\00:12:07.82 But we are talking about all sorts of different things 00:12:07.86\00:12:11.86 in this Creator, 00:12:11.89\00:12:14.30 The Creator Revealed series of programs. 00:12:14.33\00:12:18.23 I hope that you'll join us for future episodes. 00:12:18.27\00:12:22.00 We've certainly enjoyed spending this time with you. 00:12:22.04\00:12:25.34 God bless you. 00:12:25.37\00:12:26.71
