Thanks a lot. 00:00:56.32\00:00:57.65 Welcome. 00:00:57.69\00:00:59.52 Thank you, thanks for having me 00:00:59.55\00:01:00.96 on this program. 00:01:00.99\00:01:02.32 This is exciting. 00:01:02.36\00:01:03.96 Now, we got to be careful about the term nanochemist 00:01:03.99\00:01:06.16 'cause some people might think that this means, 00:01:06.19\00:01:07.76 I'm a really, really small chemist 00:01:07.80\00:01:10.97 and that's not the case. 00:01:11.00\00:01:12.33 I've met you, you're completely life size, yes. 00:01:12.37\00:01:15.24 That's right. 00:01:15.27\00:01:17.94 But I do study and we actually have a company 00:01:17.97\00:01:21.88 that I'm a part of, where we make nano materials. 00:01:21.91\00:01:27.28 And so to a chemist actually, nano materials are quite large 00:01:27.32\00:01:31.85 but to our eye and to everyone else, 00:01:31.89\00:01:33.89 nano materials are very, very small, 00:01:33.92\00:01:37.66 so small that you can't see them. 00:01:37.69\00:01:40.33 But they are a collection of atoms and molecules to form 00:01:40.36\00:01:44.97 large chemical structures to us. 00:01:45.00\00:01:48.74 But they're usually precisely engineered and controlled 00:01:48.77\00:01:54.91 to give you the right size and functionality 00:01:54.94\00:01:57.35 to do really interesting things. 00:01:57.38\00:02:00.48 And a nanoscientist, nanochemist, 00:02:00.52\00:02:03.05 there's some out there trying to build little nano cars 00:02:03.08\00:02:05.79 and nano sized batteries. 00:02:05.82\00:02:08.36 And I like to build nano sized versions 00:02:08.39\00:02:12.06 of this little suction ball cup, 00:02:12.09\00:02:14.76 can say more about that 00:02:14.80\00:02:16.93 as a little shout out to my students, 00:02:16.97\00:02:18.40 you know, I like to talk about nano materials 00:02:18.43\00:02:20.34 that look like this. 00:02:20.37\00:02:21.84 And, but inside our body, 00:02:21.87\00:02:24.17 there's just an amazing amount of nano sized structures 00:02:24.21\00:02:28.81 doing amazing things there. 00:02:28.84\00:02:30.58 So maybe you can tell us... 00:02:30.61\00:02:32.61 Yeah, maybe you can tell us a little bit about 00:02:32.65\00:02:34.42 what precisely it takes to make these really small structures. 00:02:34.45\00:02:39.35 First of all, are they something 00:02:39.39\00:02:40.72 that you can see under a microscope 00:02:40.76\00:02:42.56 or how would you... 00:02:42.59\00:02:44.93 Are they smaller than that even? 00:02:44.96\00:02:48.96 Well, they're definitely smaller 00:02:49.00\00:02:51.17 than what you can see with the microscope, 00:02:51.20\00:02:53.00 people have been able to... 00:02:53.03\00:02:54.84 Scientists, many of them visualize them 00:02:54.87\00:02:56.44 with things like an electron microscope 00:02:56.47\00:02:59.27 or atomic force microscope. 00:02:59.31\00:03:01.91 And so we have ways of actually getting visualization of them, 00:03:01.94\00:03:06.21 getting their structures, but to build them, 00:03:06.25\00:03:09.08 boy, this is a real tough job. 00:03:09.12\00:03:12.12 And it takes a lot of knowledge of chemistry 00:03:12.15\00:03:14.42 and the rules of how chemicals react with each other 00:03:14.46\00:03:18.03 to overcome thermodynamics. 00:03:18.06\00:03:21.56 These things wanna just spread out, 00:03:21.60\00:03:23.47 but we want to bring all the molecules together. 00:03:23.50\00:03:25.70 So there's some organization 00:03:25.73\00:03:28.70 that needs to be thought of in advance 00:03:28.74\00:03:31.64 to bring these things together. 00:03:31.67\00:03:33.51 So I do this on a daily basis. 00:03:33.54\00:03:36.78 So what you're saying then is, 00:03:36.81\00:03:38.15 there has to be a plan when you start, 00:03:38.18\00:03:41.18 you can't just sort of walk into a lab and say, 00:03:41.22\00:03:45.25 "Let's see what happens when I mixed together 00:03:45.29\00:03:47.16 these chemicals today?" 00:03:47.19\00:03:50.69 That's exactly right. 00:03:50.73\00:03:52.06 Now, my students 00:03:52.09\00:03:53.43 would hope it would be like that. 00:03:53.46\00:03:54.83 Let's just make some things together 00:03:54.86\00:03:56.67 and hopefully get some great nanostructures 00:03:56.70\00:03:59.00 but, no, we have to go in with a plan and a recipe. 00:03:59.03\00:04:03.17 And even with that, even with our best recipes, 00:04:03.20\00:04:06.68 we still struggle to make pure products 00:04:06.71\00:04:10.15 with the desired purpose that we have in mind. 00:04:10.18\00:04:13.72 So yeah, definitely need a plan, 00:04:13.75\00:04:16.69 a good recipe and a good laboratory space, 00:04:16.72\00:04:20.92 that's usually needs to be clean, 00:04:20.96\00:04:24.03 you need to be able to run your reactions 00:04:24.06\00:04:27.30 without interference, 00:04:27.33\00:04:28.66 and all at the right time and temperatures. 00:04:28.70\00:04:31.23 There's a lot of factors that we think about 00:04:31.27\00:04:33.50 to get to the right structures that we're trying to build. 00:04:33.54\00:04:36.57 And we're trying to build, we build some really simple 00:04:36.60\00:04:38.87 nanostructures here, 00:04:38.91\00:04:40.64 especially, compared to what we see 00:04:40.68\00:04:42.54 in living creatures. 00:04:42.58\00:04:44.58 Well, let me ask you about that. 00:04:44.61\00:04:46.61 I mean, you're a smart guy 00:04:46.65\00:04:51.49 and you have all of this equipment, 00:04:51.52\00:04:56.32 if you set out 00:04:56.36\00:04:57.83 to make one of these little nanostructures, 00:04:57.86\00:05:00.20 this relatively simple little nanostructures, 00:05:00.23\00:05:03.16 about how long would it take you to make one? 00:05:03.20\00:05:05.87 Is this something that you can have a good idea 00:05:05.90\00:05:08.20 in the morning and have by the afternoon 00:05:08.24\00:05:10.71 or is it something that takes considerably longer than that? 00:05:10.74\00:05:14.08 That's a great question. 00:05:17.45\00:05:19.31 And it depends on, 00:05:19.35\00:05:20.68 how elaborate you want your structure. 00:05:20.72\00:05:22.55 Now, the ones that we make, they can take weeks and months 00:05:22.58\00:05:29.39 to make the structures that we're looking for. 00:05:29.42\00:05:32.19 And these are relatively simple ones 00:05:32.23\00:05:35.86 that have a lot of repetitive structures to them. 00:05:35.90\00:05:39.87 Yeah, in fact, that's kind of a problem 00:05:39.90\00:05:41.84 is how long it can take and that drives up the cost, 00:05:41.87\00:05:46.04 and these things can be kind of expensive, 00:05:46.07\00:05:48.48 And so, yeah, it can take weeks and months. 00:05:48.51\00:05:52.68 And that's not just letting them sit in a pot 00:05:52.71\00:05:54.75 and stir like a pot of spaghetti. 00:05:54.78\00:05:56.69 We actually have to go in, 00:05:56.72\00:05:58.52 it will do that part for little bit, 00:05:58.55\00:06:00.36 then we have to pull out the materials, clean them up, 00:06:00.39\00:06:03.66 and maybe do some purification, 00:06:03.69\00:06:06.26 and then get them ready for another step. 00:06:06.29\00:06:09.10 We spend a lot of time doing that. 00:06:09.13\00:06:10.70 There is some shortcuts you can take, 00:06:10.73\00:06:12.67 but then you lose out on the structure. 00:06:12.70\00:06:15.24 You won't get the beautiful structures, 00:06:15.27\00:06:17.81 if you try to take some shortcuts. 00:06:17.84\00:06:20.01 It's quite a challenging time, takes quite time. 00:06:20.04\00:06:21.98 And what you're saying, doctor, 00:06:22.01\00:06:24.15 is that this takes intelligent design in a plan 00:06:24.18\00:06:30.12 that has to be carried forward. 00:06:30.15\00:06:34.32 Oh, absolutely. 00:06:34.36\00:06:35.69 And even with simple, 00:06:35.72\00:06:37.06 if there's such a thing as simple nanostructures, 00:06:37.09\00:06:40.73 you definitely need a plan. 00:06:40.76\00:06:43.30 You need an extreme amount of knowledge 00:06:43.33\00:06:46.30 about how these molecules, these chemicals, the atoms, 00:06:46.33\00:06:50.67 the electrons, how all of these things work? 00:06:50.71\00:06:54.08 And without a plan, you're gonna get a mess. 00:06:54.11\00:06:57.05 And as one of my advisors said, 00:06:57.08\00:06:59.25 you put garbage in, you get garbage out. 00:06:59.28\00:07:01.95 We need really clean materials, and you need a good plan, 00:07:01.98\00:07:05.95 you need awesome intelligence to think about 00:07:05.99\00:07:08.69 all of the side reactions that can happen, 00:07:08.72\00:07:11.29 and all the ways to go wrong, 00:07:11.33\00:07:12.66 so that you can prevent those from happening, 00:07:12.69\00:07:15.43 as much as we would like chemistry to just happen. 00:07:15.46\00:07:19.13 Being in the lab is proven to me 00:07:19.17\00:07:20.97 that this is quite a challenge 00:07:21.00\00:07:22.67 to make even simple nanostructures. 00:07:22.70\00:07:26.14 So what do you think about Darwin's theory 00:07:26.17\00:07:28.94 of the warm pool 00:07:28.98\00:07:31.05 and the chemicals coming together 00:07:31.08\00:07:32.91 for this little amoeba like structure? 00:07:32.95\00:07:37.09 Yeah, that's a great question. 00:07:37.12\00:07:39.25 It's important to know the history right there 00:07:39.29\00:07:40.79 and I won't go all into that 00:07:40.82\00:07:42.26 but much of Darwin's thoughts were formulated 00:07:42.29\00:07:45.06 well before chemistry was even established 00:07:45.09\00:07:48.40 in the way that it is in the modern scientific way, 00:07:48.43\00:07:50.83 that we know how chemicals reacting. 00:07:50.87\00:07:52.93 He thought there was just, 00:07:52.97\00:07:54.30 you know, a couple, four or five chemicals 00:07:54.34\00:07:56.10 that came together in a little bubble to make life 00:07:56.14\00:07:58.74 and we know now it's thousands of chemicals 00:07:58.77\00:08:01.48 coming together in a complex not bubble, 00:08:01.51\00:08:04.68 but a surrounding 00:08:04.71\00:08:06.31 and an amazing amount of nanostructures 00:08:06.35\00:08:09.05 that have come together. 00:08:09.08\00:08:10.42 Not just one nanostructure, but many of them 00:08:10.45\00:08:13.09 that have come together 00:08:13.12\00:08:15.19 to form a working living system. 00:08:15.22\00:08:18.49 So warm little pond, I think we would love it, 00:08:18.53\00:08:21.36 if it was that easy. 00:08:21.40\00:08:23.00 But the more we know about life in the nanostructures, 00:08:23.03\00:08:25.73 in the nano materials that life is made out of, 00:08:25.77\00:08:28.20 we understand the complexity that's there. 00:08:28.24\00:08:31.84 And I think, there is a desire or you know, 00:08:31.87\00:08:34.64 that scientists think, well, maybe we're missing something. 00:08:34.68\00:08:37.31 There's some theory that's going to come along 00:08:37.35\00:08:39.01 and change all of this. 00:08:39.05\00:08:40.78 Well, the more we look, the more complicated it gets. 00:08:40.82\00:08:43.75 So this problems not getting any easier. 00:08:43.79\00:08:45.85 So it's getting worse and not better. 00:08:45.89\00:08:47.79 Let me ask you this. 00:08:47.82\00:08:50.23 If you think about these nano machines, 00:08:50.26\00:08:53.06 these complex nano machines 00:08:53.09\00:08:54.50 that we find inside living things. 00:08:54.53\00:08:57.63 If... 00:08:57.67\00:08:59.00 I mean, you're making 00:08:59.03\00:09:00.47 relatively simple 00:09:00.50\00:09:01.84 nano chemicals, 00:09:01.87\00:09:07.71 would there be any realistic expectation 00:09:07.74\00:09:10.08 that we would even have the technology 00:09:10.11\00:09:12.21 to make something like these kinds of complex machines 00:09:12.25\00:09:18.42 that we find inside cells? 00:09:18.45\00:09:20.49 Or what would that really take? 00:09:20.52\00:09:24.69 Well, doing it from scratch, 00:09:24.73\00:09:28.10 I'd say that we're decades and decades away from that, 00:09:28.13\00:09:32.30 perhaps centuries from figuring that out, 00:09:32.33\00:09:34.57 maybe not, but it's a long time. 00:09:34.60\00:09:37.97 You know, what a lot of scientists do now, 00:09:38.01\00:09:39.97 is we just copy. 00:09:40.01\00:09:41.64 We just copy what we see in the cell. 00:09:41.68\00:09:44.55 We take things out 00:09:44.58\00:09:46.05 and we try to change them a little bit, 00:09:46.08\00:09:48.08 to give them some new functionality. 00:09:48.12\00:09:50.65 But all we're doing is modifying the master plan 00:09:50.69\00:09:53.12 that's already been enacted there. 00:09:53.15\00:09:55.49 So people are finding it easier just to mimic, 00:09:55.52\00:09:59.63 what we see in life rather than trying this over. 00:09:59.66\00:10:02.76 So basically, we were plagiarizing. 00:10:02.80\00:10:07.24 Absolutely. 00:10:07.27\00:10:08.60 It's so much easier to just use what's there 00:10:08.64\00:10:11.74 and tweak it for some of our own designs, 00:10:11.77\00:10:14.64 that's there. 00:10:14.68\00:10:16.01 And... 00:10:16.04\00:10:18.08 I'm sorry, we're just running out of time. 00:10:18.11\00:10:19.78 But it's fair to say that you absolutely believe 00:10:19.81\00:10:23.92 that God is our Creator. 00:10:23.95\00:10:28.92 Absolutely. 00:10:28.96\00:10:30.29 I can see it the handiwork, 00:10:30.33\00:10:33.70 when I see the chemicals coming together... 00:10:33.73\00:10:36.33 When we look at a house, we don't go, wow, 00:10:36.36\00:10:38.97 those pieces of wood and nails just blew together 00:10:39.00\00:10:41.40 with the right temperature and wind speeds. 00:10:41.44\00:10:44.11 So there's no question 00:10:44.14\00:10:45.67 when we look at a house that someone built it. 00:10:45.71\00:10:47.51 But when we look at molecules, we say, "Oh! 00:10:47.54\00:10:49.61 I have no idea how that happened." 00:10:49.64\00:10:51.11 So chance can do that. 00:10:51.15\00:10:53.08 But when we understand the chemistry, 00:10:53.11\00:10:55.85 and the mechanisms there, 00:10:55.88\00:10:57.22 we start to see the hand of a designer. 00:10:57.25\00:11:00.12 I absolutely believe that God is the designer 00:11:00.16\00:11:03.19 and the head chemist that put all of this together, 00:11:03.22\00:11:05.89 so that we can have life and have life abundantly. 00:11:05.93\00:11:09.20 Well, thank you so much for joining us, Dr. Hayes, 00:11:09.23\00:11:11.33 that's been a real pleasure. 00:11:11.37\00:11:13.03 And there've been some pretty deep insights there. 00:11:13.07\00:11:15.10 Yes.
