in the judgment reveals
His grace and His goodness.

kingdoms of this earth crumble

of Christ triumphs.

About two centuries ago

a group of settlers were
traveling across the United

States. The U.S.
government had just opened up
00:03:00.41\00:03:03.31
new lands for homestead,
00:03:03.51\00:03:06.15
and these settlers were
traveling there to develop
00:03:06.35\00:03:09.88
a new community. As they
traveled, off in the distance
00:03:10.09\00:03:14.36
they saw smoke, and they
knew that there was a wild
00:03:14.56\00:03:17.89
prairie fire coming toward them.
00:03:18.09\00:03:20.33
They recognized that
they could not dodge, outrun,
00:03:20.53\00:03:24.07
or get away from
that prairie fire.
00:03:24.27\00:03:25.83
They wondered what would
happen. Would they be burned up?
00:03:26.23\00:03:29.80
Consumed in the fire?
00:03:30.01\00:03:31.34
One old man who had experience
with prairie fires in the past

said this. He said: "Let's
begin to burn behind us. "

Now they recognized that
if they burned behind them

and burned a large swath of land
00:03:43.32\00:03:45.79
they then could get in the
center of that burned land.

So they started this
controlled fire behind them.

They burned a large circle of
land, then put that smaller fire

out. The entire company got
into the center of that fire.

One little girl
spoke up and said:

"Are you sure that we're
not all going to be burned up?

The fire is coming!
It's coming toward us.

It's coming rapidly...
it's coming quickly! "

And the old man said:

Standing in the
center of God's love

we stand where the fires
of hell have already been.

Because on that cross of Calvary

shame, the condemnation,

judgment we have a hiding place.

the circle of His love.

He experienced all
of the pain, the agony,

the suffering, of a
lost human being as He

bore our guilt
and bore our shame.

That's what Paul meant
when he wrote in Galatians 3:13:

"Cursed is everyone
that hangs upon the tree. "

In Revelation
14:6-7 the Bible says:

Now notice: this judgment
is a present-tense judgment.

Not the hour of
God's judgment WILL come.

The book of Revelation, though,
does not give us the timing
00:05:55.15\00:05:58.95
of that judgment.
It DOES give us a hint

because in Revelation 22
verses 11 and 12 it says:

"He that is unjust,
let him be unjust still.
00:06:05.49\00:06:07.73
He that is righteous,
let him be righteous still. "

"Behold I come quickly
and My reward is with Me. "

So if Jesus is coming
to give out the rewards,

there must be a judgment
preliminary to His return

to determine who receives
what reward when He comes.

But yet although
Revelation teaches us

that there is a
judgment - a pre-advent judgment

previous to the coming of Christ

in which the destinies of all
human beings have been settled,

in which God's name is honored
before the entire universe -
00:06:38.26\00:06:41.40
Revelation does not give us the
exact timing of that judgment.

Now in Scripture there
are two great prophetic books
00:06:46.13\00:06:48.90
that speak of end-time events:
00:06:49.10\00:06:50.91
the book of Revelation
and the book of Daniel.
00:06:51.11\00:06:53.07
In this judgment
God takes us back
00:06:54.01\00:06:57.71
to the book of Daniel.
00:06:57.91\00:06:59.48
And there in the book
of Daniel an angel explains
00:06:59.68\00:07:03.32
to Daniel the
timing of this judgment
00:07:03.52\00:07:06.76
that would occur in
the book of Revelation.
00:07:06.96\00:07:09.72
In the book of Daniel we have
the rise and fall of kingdoms:
00:07:10.73\00:07:14.16
Babylon,
Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome.
00:07:14.36\00:07:17.87
The break-up of the
Roman Empire. We studied this
00:07:18.27\00:07:21.20
in our last presentation.
00:07:21.40\00:07:23.14
And then we have the rise
of a religious/political power.
00:07:23.34\00:07:26.61
These nations or
empires have attempted to usurp
00:07:27.01\00:07:30.45
God's authority and
usurp God's kingdom.
00:07:30.65\00:07:33.65
But as Daniel is
looking at these empires
00:07:33.85\00:07:38.92
he looks up into heaven
and he sees the great judgment.

And there in that judgment
he sees the kingdom of God
00:07:42.16\00:07:45.09
restored and given to Christ.

Daniel looks at that
scene in Daniel chapter 7.

When we come to Daniel chapter 8

in an explanation of that
judgment Daniel 8:14 says:

Now you might be
asking the question:

"What does the cleansing
of the sanctuary have to do
00:08:08.05\00:08:11.72
with the judgment? "
00:08:11.92\00:08:13.25
Every Jew would understand that.

Once a year on Yom
Kippur, the Day of Atonement,
00:08:15.36\00:08:18.63
the sanctuary was cleansed.
00:08:19.03\00:08:21.13
All year as
sinners confessed their sin
00:08:21.33\00:08:24.07
the guilt of that sin
went into the sanctuary
00:08:24.27\00:08:27.80
through the blood of the animal
00:08:28.00\00:08:29.70
or through the
priest eating the animal.

As that sin symbolically
entered the sanctuary...

as it did that, once a year
at the end of the Jewish year

there was a Day of Atonement
or the day of the cleansing

of the sanctuary where
the priest enters into the

Most Holy Place of the
sanctuary with pure blood.

The priest entering
in with that pure blood

cleanses the sanctuary.
Comes out and places the guilt

upon the scapegoat,
and the scapegoat is sent

out into the wilderness.

So that's the scene,
but this Day of Atonement,

this day of the
cleansing of the sanctuary,

was a day of judgment.
Every Jew understood that.
00:09:08.84\00:09:10.75
Every Israelite had to
gather around the sanctuary.
00:09:11.15\00:09:14.08
They had to pray;
they had to seek God
00:09:14.28\00:09:16.22
or else they would
be cut off or judged.
00:09:16.42\00:09:18.62
So when Daniel says:
00:09:18.92\00:09:20.26
it's as if he was saying:
"Then the final day of judgment
00:09:24.66\00:09:28.46
will occur. " Now
obviously this sanctuary
00:09:28.66\00:09:32.03
is not the sanctuary on
earth which ceased to exist
00:09:32.23\00:09:36.17
at the end of the
Jewish dispensation.
00:09:36.37\00:09:38.71
But this must be
another sanctuary -
00:09:39.11\00:09:41.51
the sanctuary in heaven
- that would be cleansed.
00:09:41.71\00:09:44.98
Cleansed from all of
the pollution that comes as
00:09:45.18\00:09:49.58
God's people confess their sins
and Christ bears them there.

Cleansed in the sense that
all of the wickedness and evil

on earth would be
destroyed as Christ's kingdom

was given back to Him.

Daniel 8 verse 27 as
Daniel is thinking about this
00:10:05.63\00:10:09.87
cleansing of the
sanctuary he doesn't understand
00:10:10.07\00:10:12.04
quite what it means.
He's perplexed over it.
00:10:12.24\00:10:15.08
He doesn't
understand the 2,300 days.
00:10:15.28\00:10:17.21
Daniel has been thinking about
the deliverance of his people
00:10:17.41\00:10:20.92
and Daniel says:
00:10:21.12\00:10:22.45
So at the end of Daniel
chapter 8, Daniel does not
00:10:25.35\00:10:28.42
understand the vision at all.
00:10:28.62\00:10:30.83
He's perplexed
about it; he is confused.

In the Bible, one prophetic
day equals one literal year.
00:10:35.26\00:10:41.24
So in Scripture, the 2,300 days

would actually
equal 2,300 literal years.

Now you might say:
"Pastor Mark, where is the

Biblical evidence of that? "

We find it in two
different lines of reasoning.

In the Bible when we have
prophecy in symbolic images
00:11:00.89\00:11:06.03
the time period
is also symbolic.
00:11:06.23\00:11:09.63
So in Daniel chapter 8,
for example, you have a ram
00:11:10.03\00:11:12.70
representing Medo-Persia; a
he-goat representing Greece;
00:11:12.90\00:11:16.67
and you have symbolic
animals. That indicates
00:11:16.87\00:11:21.54
that the time
period be symbolic.
00:11:21.74\00:11:23.65
The other way we know is
that throughout Scripture
00:11:23.85\00:11:26.41
the Bible says that: "I have
given you a day for a year. "
00:11:26.61\00:11:30.79
One prophetic day
equals one literal year.
00:11:30.99\00:11:34.16
There's another way we know.
In Daniel 9 verse 21 it says:
00:11:34.56\00:11:38.29
Now notice what the
angel says. This is critical:
00:11:52.37\00:11:54.91
Daniel doesn't
understand the vision
00:11:58.65\00:12:00.95
but at the precise
moment where he's perplexed
00:12:01.15\00:12:04.89
the angel returns in Daniel
9 to explain the vision to him.
00:12:05.09\00:12:08.69
The angel explains to
Daniel that along the timeline
00:12:09.49\00:12:12.59
of this vision the
Messiah would come.
00:12:12.79\00:12:15.96
That Christ would
be baptized on time.
00:12:16.36\00:12:19.13
Christ would be
crucified on time.
00:12:19.33\00:12:21.70
That the gospel would
go to all humanity on time.
00:12:21.90\00:12:25.31
So this vision of Daniel
9 is a vision about Jesus:
00:12:25.51\00:12:29.04
about His baptism, about His
death, about the gospel going
00:12:29.24\00:12:32.85
out to the world on time.
00:12:33.05\00:12:35.02
This prophecy, though, could
not possibly have been fulfilled
00:12:35.42\00:12:40.16
back in Daniel's day.
00:12:40.36\00:12:42.39
The Messiah had not yet come.
00:12:42.59\00:12:44.69
So it must be much
more than 2,300 literal days
00:12:44.89\00:12:48.76
which was simply taking us 6-1/2
or 7 years from Daniel's time.
00:12:48.96\00:12:54.24
So it points
forward to the Messiah.
00:12:54.44\00:12:56.20
But there's another
aspect of this prophecy.
00:12:56.40\00:12:59.01
The prophecy points not only
to the first coming of Jesus
00:12:59.21\00:13:02.48
as the Messiah. It points down
to the final day of judgment
00:13:02.68\00:13:05.98
and the second coming of Christ.
00:13:06.18\00:13:08.75
Now the prophecy does not
give us the timing of the second
00:13:09.15\00:13:11.95
coming of Christ but it
DOES point out a time of the end
00:13:12.15\00:13:16.12
which precisely could not have
taken place in Daniel's time.
00:13:16.32\00:13:19.86
Daniel 8:17 when the angel
was explaining it. It says:
00:13:20.26\00:13:24.17
Now there are some
people that mistakenly
00:13:29.84\00:13:33.17
look at this prophecy
and believe it applies
00:13:33.38\00:13:37.35
to one of the ancient
rulers who attacked Jerusalem
00:13:37.55\00:13:41.45
and set up an idol
in the Jewish temple
00:13:41.65\00:13:44.02
called Antiochus Epiphanes.
00:13:44.22\00:13:45.95
But the language of the prophecy
00:13:46.15\00:13:48.76
really indicates that this could
not possibly have been the case.
00:13:48.96\00:13:53.50
The prophecy takes us
down to the time of the end.
00:13:53.80\00:13:56.10
Antiochus never did that.
00:13:56.30\00:13:57.63
The prophecy is a large
prophecy... a big prophecy.

Not talking about something
that happened in a Jewish temple

but it's talking about
the universal conflict between

good and evil,
between Christ and Satan.

It's talking about
the honor of Christ...
00:14:09.18\00:14:11.61
the kingdom being restored
to Christ in the judgment.

It's talking about a time period
00:14:14.85\00:14:17.05
that talks about Christ's
baptism, Christ's death,
00:14:17.45\00:14:20.22
the gospel going to the
Gentiles, the time of the end.
00:14:20.42\00:14:23.66
It is a call of all
humanity that no longer
00:14:23.86\00:14:26.46
business as usual, no
longer pleasures as usual.

It's a call to get ready
for the coming of Christ.

What message does he
receive from the angel?

And I would much rather
listen to what the angel says

than some
philosophy of some human being.

This message takes us
down to the last days...

takes us down to end time.

The message in Daniel 8 begins

with the battle
with this ram and he-goat

as we've mentioned.
The Bible names them.

It names Greece;
it names Medo-Persia.

Bible prophecy is
incredibly detailed.
00:15:09.57\00:15:12.94
Bible prophecy is
incredible precise.
00:15:13.14\00:15:16.11
It also talks in this prophecy
00:15:16.31\00:15:19.08
about a power that
would rise out of Rome.
00:15:19.28\00:15:22.48
It calls it a
"little horn" power,

and this power would think
to change the very law of God.

This power would
usurp the authority of God.
00:15:29.66\00:15:35.00
It would take human
decrees, human traditions

and place them instead
of the commandments of God.

In the
cleansing of the sanctuary

at this moment of judgment

God's truth would be restored.

So there are a
number of things happening

in this idea of the judgment or
the cleansing of the sanctuary.

idea... it's a BIG idea.

quite understand the vision.

chapter 9 the angel comes back

to explain the vision to Daniel.

This vision takes us
down the stream of time.

through a journey of history.

is confused at the vision.

The matter that
Daniel was discussing,

was the matter of the
cleansing of the sanctuary

of the 2,300 days.

So the angel comes back
to explain this to Daniel.

Who are Daniel's people?

They are the Jewish nation.

What, indeed, is the
holy city? Jerusalem.

So the first
part of this prophecy

is dealing with the coming of
the Messiah to His own people.

Notice: who did
that? The Messiah.

Who did that? The Messiah.

Who would do that? The Messiah.
00:19:35.24\00:19:36.91
Who would do that?
Jesus would ascend to heaven.

He would enter
in to the sanctuary.

He would anoint the
Holy and Most Holy Place

before He began His
work in the Holy Place.

anointing to consecrate

is a divine timetable.

minute; and it is exact.
