and he took me on a study of
the Old and the New Covenants

and the division of His Law

and I want to share just
a fraction of that with you

to point out a few things that

So we see that there is
salvation by grace through faith

in us, He helps us to walk in
the power of his Holy Spirit

Now, what laws is
God talking about here?

What laws? We will take a
look of the 2 great divisions of

God's law tonight and
this will be rather rapid

you is what was the eternal Law

the temporary law of God.

What is the difference between
the Old Covenant and the New

Covenant and in the first great
division of God's Law, the Ten
Commandments law of God

you that the Bible calls the Ten
Commandments the two tablets

it the royal law, the law of

liberty. Now we call it the

law of love. Now the second
great division of God's law is

the Old Covenant law and the
Bible calls it the book or the
covenant or the book of Moses,

the book of the law or the law

terms. We sometimes refer to
it as the ceremonial law or the

mosaic law. It is important for
us to distinguish what was God's
intention in these 2 laws,

what was His purpose.

Before Mount Sinai, - when
I was doing a study of this

I found out that well before
Mount Sinai all of God's Ten
Commandments were known to men

and they knew that to disobey
one of God's commandments was a

sin. But this was well
before Moses reached Mount Sinai

but what happened
at Mount Sinai though

God spoke His 10 commandments
law directly to a people who had
been in bondage for many

centuries. And when God spoke to
all of the people, directly with

His voice, there was no
mediator. And when He spoke this
law, the Bible tells us that God

added no more. When Moses
reviewed the ten commandments

with the people This is what he
said in Deut 5:22 : God was the

one who spoke the ten
commandments. They were
complete. He added no more.

know that God's law was perfect.

This verse that we

Him." And when Moses went up to
Mount Sinai to receive the Ten

Commandments in stone (and this
was some time later), he went

alone, but he also went alone
to go up and receive the book of

the law which we'll
look at in just a moment.

Moses talks about how the law
was delivered to him,

Commandments law with His own

what that must have looked like?

But I want to point it out that
He didn't leave it up to men to
write His ten commandments.

God was perfectly
satisfied to do that himself

and did you know the Bible tells
us that he wrote these
commandments on these two

tablets' front and back.

stone these ten commandments

who wrote the second set?

Did you know that God did not
trust men ever to write his Ten

Commandments? Why? When the
Bible says he added no more, I
think He was afraid that men

would get in there and add
something more. So you're
probably familiar with the whole

story of how Moses came down
from the mountain and he
witnessed the Hebrew children

worshiping a golden calf -
committing idolatry and in a fit
of righteous indignation
00:19:05.94\00:19:11.62
Moses threw the tablets to
the ground and shattered them.
00:19:11.65\00:19:15.22
But what happened
next is recorded in Ex 34:1

And it says: 'the Lord said to
Moses: 'cut two tablets of stone
like the first ones
00:19:20.54\00:19:28.41
And I will write on these
tablets the words that were on
the first tablets which you
00:19:28.44\00:19:35.91
broke. That's God speaking and
He is saying: 'Moses, you're not
00:19:35.94\00:19:40.51
gonna write this, I'm gonna
write my Ten Commandment Law.

And in Deut 10:1-4, here is
Moses when he was describing
this a second time and the

second memorial of the Ten
Commandments. Here is what Moses
said: 'at that time the Lord

said to me: 'hew for yourself
two tablets of stone like the
00:19:55.96\00:19:58.95
first and come up to me on
the mountain and make yourself
00:19:58.98\00:20:05.03
an ark of wood and I (this is
God speaking) will write on the
tablets the words that were
00:20:05.06\00:20:12.25
on the first tablets which you
broke and you shall put them in
00:20:12.28\00:20:18.98
the ark." So Moses said: 'I made
an ark, I hewed two tablets of
00:20:19.01\00:20:21.33
stone and went up the mountains
and he (God) wrote on the
00:20:21.34\00:20:23.33
tablets, according to the first
writing, the ten commandments
00:20:23.36\00:20:32.18
So after God wrote the second
set of these ten commandments

with his own finger, He
instructed His faithful servant

to take these commandments
and place them inside the ark.

Now where was the
ark of the covenant?

It was in the Most
Holy Place of the temple

And Ex. 40:20 shows us that
Moses did exactly like the Lord

What did this represent?

The commandments of God, the
ones written with his own finger

were placed inside
the Most Holy Place

inside the ark which
was the throne of God.

When Moses put them in there, I
know that he knew that God was
establishing His reign on Earth

these ten commandments

He put them in a permanent

place. And Bible writers were
inspired to describe this
beautiful ten commandments law

of God With the same attributes
that they describe the Lord

Let me give you some of the
things that the Bible says about
the Ten Commandment law of God

It was perfect
and holy just like God

The Ten Commandment
law was spiritual and love.

It was light and true.

It was righteous and
righteousness, just and pure,
good and faithful, wisdom and

great The Bible also refers to
the Ten Commandment law as
bringing great peace

and unchanging. All attributes
of God. So what do we see?

The Ten Commandments of God are
a transcript of his holy and
righteous character.

Now let's review
what we've seen so far

that, let's turn our eyes

law. And in the Bible it is
called the Book of the Law, the
Book of the Covenant or the Law

of Moses But first let me share
very briefly the time-line of
what happened on Mount Sinai

because sometimes we have
it in our minds a little bit

backwards. When God spoke, He
spoke directly to all of the
people there at Mount Sinai

and He gave them His Ten
Commandments Law and added

nothing more. Then what
happened? The people asked
Moses: 'Hey, you be the mediator

this was too awesome for
us, this was too frightening.

So the next thing that we see
happening is God speaks to Moses

the special covenant with
Israel. This is before he wrote
the Ten Commandment Law in

stone. So Moses had gone back on
the mountain and God gives Moses
this book of the law

So Moses comes down and
now, instead of God speaking

What was in the book of the
covenant or the book of the law

Moses comes down and it's now
Moses who speaks to the people.

speaks everything to the people

And then Moses goes back on the
mountain for 40 days and nights
