00:05:38.17\00:05:40.27 They call it super because it's huge. 00:05:45.94\00:05:48.71 We're standing in the caldera of the volcano right now. 00:05:48.74\00:05:51.25 That's where the lava used to be. 00:05:51.28\00:05:53.78 This whole area is one big active volcano. 00:05:53.82\00:05:56.52 We know it's active 00:05:56.55\00:05:57.89 because there are over 10,000 geothermal features here. 00:05:57.92\00:06:01.59 Geothermal means different forms of heat 00:06:01.62\00:06:04.09 coming from underground. 00:06:04.13\00:06:08.06 We've come here to see some of that heat 00:06:08.10\00:06:10.23 reaching the surface. 00:06:10.27\00:06:11.60 Check this out. 00:06:11.63\00:06:14.27 One of the most common geothermal features 00:06:14.30\00:06:16.47 is the hot spring. 00:06:16.50\00:06:17.97 Something big is going on way down there, 00:06:18.01\00:06:20.04 because a lot of water is returning to the surface, 00:06:20.08\00:06:22.84 very hot, about 500 gallons per minute here. 00:06:22.88\00:06:27.28 I just need to be careful not to fall in. 00:06:27.32\00:06:30.72 One of the cool things about this hot spring 00:06:30.75\00:06:32.55 are the colors, look. 00:06:32.59\00:06:36.02 A lot of colorful bacteria like to grow in this warm water 00:06:36.06\00:06:39.09 that is rich in minerals. 00:06:39.13\00:06:41.90 It's so cool to see so much color in nature. 00:06:41.93\00:06:47.27 To really appreciate this place, 00:06:47.30\00:06:48.87 you got to see a picture from the sky. 00:06:48.90\00:06:50.74 Check this out. 00:06:50.77\00:06:53.24 Isn't that amazing? 00:06:53.27\00:06:54.78 You can even see the boardwalk on the lower right. 00:06:54.81\00:06:57.98 There's a lot of geothermal activity here 00:06:58.01\00:06:59.85 in Yellowstone Park. 00:06:59.88\00:07:01.22 Let's go, see some more. 00:07:01.25\00:07:02.58 Yellowstone is a huge park. 00:07:09.19\00:07:11.23 It was actually the first national park 00:07:11.26\00:07:13.19 in the United States. 00:07:13.23\00:07:17.13 These are called mud pots. 00:07:17.17\00:07:19.07 There's not much water coming to the surface here. 00:07:19.10\00:07:21.27 It's more steam and other gases 00:07:21.30\00:07:23.14 that mix with the clay and minerals. 00:07:23.17\00:07:25.01 Combined, 00:07:25.04\00:07:26.37 you get a constant display of mud splattering. 00:07:26.41\00:07:29.44 It's really funny to watch these little chunks of mud 00:07:34.38\00:07:36.95 just jumping around. 00:07:36.99\00:07:38.39 It almost looks like they're alive. 00:07:38.42\00:07:42.72 We've seen hot springs, and we've seen mud pots. 00:07:42.76\00:07:44.69 Now let's go see some fumaroles. 00:07:44.73\00:07:49.13 Fumaroles are like hot springs. 00:07:49.16\00:07:50.77 The only difference is that, there is no mud, 00:07:50.80\00:07:53.17 and no water makes it to the surface, 00:07:53.20\00:07:55.20 just steam. 00:07:55.24\00:07:56.67 Wow, these fumaroles just go pop, pop, pop all day long. 00:08:02.21\00:08:06.75 But to see some really amazing geothermal activity, 00:08:06.78\00:08:09.72 we need to see some geysers. 00:08:09.75\00:08:11.12 Come on. 00:08:11.15\00:08:12.75 Geysers are very rare. 00:08:25.83\00:08:27.67 There are only about 1000 in the world, 00:08:27.70\00:08:30.61 and half of them are right here in Yellowstone. 00:08:30.64\00:08:34.44 The most famous geyser in the world 00:08:34.48\00:08:36.11 is right here behind me. 00:08:36.14\00:08:37.48 Old Faithful, we're waiting for it to erupt. 00:08:37.51\00:08:42.45 They call it Old Faithful, 00:08:42.48\00:08:43.95 because it faithfully erupts about every hour or so, 24/7. 00:08:43.99\00:08:50.03 Since it's so predictable, 00:08:50.06\00:08:51.59 millions of people come to see it erupt 00:08:51.63\00:08:54.03 every year. 00:08:54.06\00:08:55.90 The eruption of water starts slowly 00:08:55.93\00:08:58.43 and can eventually shoot water over 150 feet high. 00:08:58.47\00:09:03.20 Over 8,000 gallons of water can be blown into the air 00:09:03.24\00:09:06.68 during the eruptions 00:09:06.71\00:09:08.04 that only last a couple of minutes. 00:09:08.08\00:09:11.01 Wow, that's amazing. 00:09:11.05\00:09:12.65 You know, Old Faithful reminds me of God. 00:09:19.22\00:09:22.62 He's always there for us. He will never leave us. 00:09:22.66\00:09:26.36 Wow, that was cool. 00:09:31.63\00:09:33.37 Actually that was hot. The water comes out boiling. 00:09:33.40\00:09:39.37 So how does all this geothermal energy work? 00:09:39.41\00:09:42.64 Well, water from the surface drains deep down below, 00:09:42.68\00:09:46.05 through cracks in the ground, about a mile down on average. 00:09:46.08\00:09:49.82 There, the water comes in contact 00:09:49.85\00:09:51.75 with hot volcanic rocks and it boils. 00:09:51.79\00:09:55.26 The pressure of the water boiling 00:09:55.29\00:09:56.93 makes it eventually come blasting back 00:09:56.96\00:09:58.96 up to the surface 00:09:58.99\00:10:00.33 as boiling hot water and steam. 00:10:00.36\00:10:06.07 There is no doubt, 00:10:06.10\00:10:07.44 there's incredible power under the surface. 00:10:07.47\00:10:11.07 So does the Bible say anything about underground energy? 00:10:11.11\00:10:14.84 Actually it does. 00:10:14.88\00:10:16.21 It says that during the flood, 00:10:16.24\00:10:17.58 all the water from under the ground erupted. 00:10:17.61\00:10:21.68 All of the geothermal features we've seen here today 00:10:21.72\00:10:24.59 are tiny examples of what the biblical flood 00:10:24.62\00:10:27.66 could have done to our planet. 00:10:27.69\00:10:31.89 Even though the Bible is not a science book, 00:10:31.93\00:10:34.00 I'm glad that we see things in nature 00:10:34.03\00:10:35.80 that show us the Bible is true. 00:10:35.83\00:10:38.23 I think I'm gonna write that down in my journal. 00:10:38.27\00:10:40.47 There is a lot of energy underground, 00:10:48.04\00:10:50.68 just like the Bible talks about in Genesis, 00:10:50.71\00:10:53.01 as it tells the account of the flood. 00:10:53.05\00:10:55.32 You know, it's been 4,000 years since the flood, 00:11:00.32\00:11:03.26 and the earth has never fully settled. 00:11:03.29\00:11:05.33 No one knows exactly when this super volcano 00:11:08.73\00:11:11.43 here in Yellowstone erupted, 00:11:11.47\00:11:13.23 and there are no records of anyone that saw it erupt. 00:11:13.27\00:11:16.17 There's only so much you can learn from a volcano 00:11:16.20\00:11:19.17 long after it erupted. 00:11:19.21\00:11:20.74 You know it would be helpful 00:11:24.18\00:11:25.75 to see a volcano that we know erupted recently? 00:11:25.78\00:11:28.95 I know exactly where there is one. 00:11:28.98\00:11:30.52 Mount St. Helens in Washington. Let's get back to the jeep. 00:11:30.55\00:11:33.62 Hi, everyone. It's Doc M here at HQ. 00:11:42.86\00:11:46.17 While Rich is out investigating volcanoes, 00:11:46.20\00:11:48.77 here at HQ, we're gonna be doing some research about 00:11:48.80\00:11:51.84 DNA and about our genes. 00:11:51.87\00:11:56.08 Have you ever heard someone say, 00:11:56.11\00:11:58.18 it's in your genes? 00:11:58.21\00:12:00.35 They weren't talking about your pants. 00:12:00.38\00:12:02.35 Genes are part of our DNA 00:12:02.38\00:12:04.39 that provide information about each one of us. 00:12:04.42\00:12:08.12 Information about our eye color, 00:12:08.16\00:12:10.59 our height, our blood type, 00:12:10.63\00:12:12.69 and thousands of other little details 00:12:12.73\00:12:14.73 that make you just you, 00:12:14.76\00:12:17.63 that is passed on to us from our parents. 00:12:17.67\00:12:20.67 Since every person has around 30,000 genes, 00:12:20.70\00:12:24.87 there are almost an endless variety of combinations, 00:12:24.91\00:12:27.51 like combinations this, combinations that, 00:12:27.54\00:12:30.25 that's why everyone looks a little different. 00:12:30.28\00:12:33.11 For example, Jacqui's eyes are hazel, 00:12:33.15\00:12:38.85 mine are brown. 00:12:38.89\00:12:40.99 Jacqui's hair and mine are different too. 00:12:41.02\00:12:45.09 Each one of us is unique. 00:12:45.13\00:12:47.13 Our gene combinations are totally different. 00:12:47.16\00:12:51.77 Generation after generation, our genes are passed down. 00:12:51.80\00:12:55.10 And each time, it's a new combination. 00:12:55.14\00:12:57.24 Surprise! 00:12:57.27\00:12:58.81 I love it. 00:12:58.84\00:13:00.81 That's important to remember 00:13:00.84\00:13:02.38 because we're not getting any new genes. 00:13:02.41\00:13:05.11 We're just copying, and shuffling, 00:13:05.15\00:13:08.38 and changing the same ones around. 00:13:08.42\00:13:13.42 They're like a set of dominoes. 00:13:13.46\00:13:15.69 Each one of these dominoes is different, right? 00:13:15.72\00:13:18.46 You've played dominoes. 00:13:18.49\00:13:19.83 No two are the same. 00:13:19.86\00:13:21.56 This is an eight and a one. 00:13:26.53\00:13:29.17 This is a five and a two, they're not the same. 00:13:29.20\00:13:32.51 This is a four and a five. 00:13:36.81\00:13:39.35 And this is a four and a four, 00:13:39.38\00:13:41.38 they're very close, but not the same. 00:13:41.42\00:13:44.82 Wow. 00:13:44.85\00:13:47.36 If there were 30,000 different dominoes in this box, 00:13:47.39\00:13:51.73 like genes, 00:13:51.76\00:13:53.09 there would be a massive amount of combinations possible. 00:13:53.13\00:13:55.93 Wow! 00:13:55.96\00:13:57.47 Those different combinations in our genes 00:13:57.50\00:13:59.40 are what make each one of us unique. 00:13:59.43\00:14:04.97 As generations pass, all we ever see is variety. 00:14:05.01\00:14:10.65 Different ones. 00:14:10.68\00:14:13.25 Never has there ever been 00:14:13.28\00:14:15.48 any evidence that we are adding new genes. 00:14:15.52\00:14:19.19 Just different combinations of the same 00:14:19.22\00:14:23.26 making variety. 00:14:23.29\00:14:26.23 This is why, yet again, 00:14:26.26\00:14:28.96 I believe God is my Creator. 00:14:29.00\00:14:32.40 Hey, everyone. It's me, Rich Aguilera. 00:14:36.64\00:14:38.94 I'd love to see you at one of our live events. 00:14:38.97\00:14:41.54 To see where I'll be speaking, 00:14:41.58\00:14:43.18 visit our website, TheCreationCase.com. 00:14:43.21\00:14:46.72 We're getting closer. 00:14:53.89\00:14:55.32 Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980 for everybody to see. 00:14:55.36\00:14:59.29 Check it out. I got some pictures right here. 00:14:59.33\00:15:01.16 This was the first time 00:15:05.03\00:15:06.94 scientists got such a good close up look 00:15:06.97\00:15:09.74 at a catastrophic event. 00:15:09.77\00:15:11.41 Pretty destructive, 00:15:15.54\00:15:16.88 but nothing compared to the flood. 00:15:16.91\00:15:18.51 Imagine God commanding all the energy underground 00:15:18.55\00:15:21.32 to come bursting to the surface. 00:15:21.35\00:15:23.15 The eruption left a massive crater, 00:15:27.29\00:15:29.82 one mile wide. 00:15:29.86\00:15:31.96 Two hundred and fifty homes were destroyed, 00:15:31.99\00:15:34.73 along with 47 bridges 00:15:34.76\00:15:36.56 and 185 miles of roadway. 00:15:36.60\00:15:40.97 Wow, it sure made a mess. 00:15:41.00\00:15:44.11 This is Johnston Rich. 00:15:44.14\00:15:45.61 It's the best spot to see the side of the volcano 00:15:45.64\00:15:48.38 that blew out. 00:15:48.41\00:15:51.21 The blast traveled down the mountain 00:15:51.25\00:15:53.15 over 600 miles per hour 00:15:53.18\00:15:55.45 and was heard hundreds of miles away. 00:15:55.48\00:15:58.12 This was a pretty massive event. 00:15:58.15\00:15:59.99 Hey, check it out. See that gorge way down there? 00:16:03.56\00:16:06.16 Some people call it the little Grand Canyon. 00:16:06.19\00:16:11.07 Well, after the eruption here, water and mudflows 00:16:11.10\00:16:14.54 cut enormous canyons down the side of the mountain. 00:16:14.57\00:16:18.57 Some people think large canyons are slowly formed 00:16:18.61\00:16:21.14 over millions of years. 00:16:21.18\00:16:22.61 But this one formed in one day. 00:16:22.64\00:16:26.11 After the eruption, some areas here were buried 00:16:26.15\00:16:28.82 in almost 600 feet of dirt and mud. 00:16:28.85\00:16:33.05 Geologists, the scientists 00:16:33.09\00:16:34.89 who study earth's rocks and layers, 00:16:34.92\00:16:36.73 assumed that this was just a jumbled mess of dirt 00:16:36.76\00:16:39.33 that got buried, 00:16:39.36\00:16:40.70 but they were surprised 00:16:40.73\00:16:42.06 to find very finely sorted layers, 00:16:42.10\00:16:44.80 hundreds of brand new layers. 00:16:44.83\00:16:49.97 There's a place not too far from here 00:16:50.01\00:16:51.64 where we can check out those layers. 00:16:51.67\00:16:53.07 Come on. 00:16:53.11\00:16:54.44 Here's those layers I was talking about. 00:17:03.25\00:17:05.15 They were deposited here in 1980. 00:17:05.19\00:17:09.32 Here we can see layer after layer 00:17:09.36\00:17:12.09 deposited in one day. 00:17:12.13\00:17:14.56 It seems like the evidence tells us 00:17:14.60\00:17:16.73 that the types of geological features 00:17:16.77\00:17:18.33 we see all over the world can be formed quickly 00:17:18.37\00:17:21.97 under the right conditions, 00:17:22.00\00:17:23.84 conditions such as global flood. 00:17:23.87\00:17:27.48 There's one more thing we have to do 00:17:27.51\00:17:29.08 to really appreciate this place, 00:17:29.11\00:17:30.68 we need to climb to the rim. 00:17:30.71\00:17:32.38 I got all my gear in the jeep. 00:17:36.69\00:17:38.32 It takes a full day to climb to the rim. 00:17:38.35\00:17:40.26 So we're going to start first thing tomorrow morning. 00:17:40.29\00:17:42.39 The best way to check out a volcano 00:17:49.73\00:17:52.40 is to climb up to the rim and look down into the crater. 00:17:52.43\00:17:56.20 It's a long hike and I got all my gear. 00:17:56.24\00:17:58.77 Let's go. 00:17:58.81\00:18:01.11 On May 18, 1980, a 5.1 earthquake 00:18:01.14\00:18:05.55 triggered a massive landslide on the north face 00:18:05.58\00:18:08.78 of the mountain. 00:18:08.82\00:18:11.99 Imagine the whole side of that mountain exploding 00:18:12.02\00:18:15.19 and all the debris sliding down into the valley. 00:18:15.22\00:18:19.76 The interesting thing about this catastrophe 00:18:19.79\00:18:21.93 is that the whole world 00:18:21.96\00:18:23.63 got a front row seat to this event. 00:18:23.67\00:18:26.23 Everyone saw it happen 00:18:26.27\00:18:28.14 and everyone saw what happened after. 00:18:28.17\00:18:31.31 They were able to see how the event unfolded 00:18:31.34\00:18:34.08 and how it affected the landscape around it. 00:18:34.11\00:18:37.91 You know when scientists study things that happened 00:18:37.95\00:18:40.75 hundreds or thousands of years ago, 00:18:40.78\00:18:42.88 they have to make some assumptions about 00:18:42.92\00:18:44.85 what they think happened. 00:18:44.89\00:18:46.22 As we slowly continue up the mountain, 00:18:50.16\00:18:52.53 we soon encounter snow, and it starts getting steeper. 00:18:52.56\00:18:56.83 Walking poles will now come in very handy. 00:18:56.87\00:19:02.20 Since many people assume that 00:19:02.24\00:19:03.81 it takes millions of years to deposit layers, 00:19:03.84\00:19:06.51 they were quite surprised when they saw here 00:19:06.54\00:19:08.38 that hundreds were laid down in one day. 00:19:08.41\00:19:13.38 Because of Mount St. Helens, people all over now wondered 00:19:13.42\00:19:17.02 if the layers around the world 00:19:17.05\00:19:18.39 could all have been deposited quickly 00:19:18.42\00:19:20.49 at places like the Grand Canyon. 00:19:20.52\00:19:23.19 Of course, none of us were there 00:19:23.22\00:19:24.93 when the Grand Canyon formed. 00:19:24.96\00:19:26.83 But little clues like this cause many people to rethink 00:19:26.86\00:19:30.57 this idea of millions of years. 00:19:30.60\00:19:34.80 The climbing gets steeper each step of the way. 00:19:34.84\00:19:38.37 I have to be very careful. 00:19:38.41\00:19:40.38 One misstep would cause me to fall 00:19:40.41\00:19:42.84 and slide hundreds of feet down the mountain. 00:19:42.88\00:19:46.92 I definitely don't want that to happen. 00:19:46.95\00:19:49.35 The thing is, 00:19:49.38\00:19:50.72 it's actually easier to climb on the snow, 00:19:50.75\00:19:53.12 because where there's no snow, the ground is very loose, 00:19:53.15\00:19:57.23 and I would be slipping every step of the way. 00:19:57.26\00:20:00.30 I'm gonna have to put my snowshoes on soon. 00:20:00.33\00:20:04.10 As we climb higher and higher, 00:20:04.13\00:20:06.13 we get an awesome view of Mount Adams to the east. 00:20:06.17\00:20:10.87 Well, for the rest of the way to the top, 00:20:10.91\00:20:12.74 we're gonna need our snowshoes. 00:20:12.77\00:20:14.71 Let's get them on. 00:20:14.74\00:20:17.48 Snowshoes have these sharp teeth on the bottom 00:20:17.51\00:20:20.02 Great for traction in the snow. 00:20:20.05\00:20:21.72 Ready, let's go. 00:20:25.52\00:20:26.92 We're getting to such a high elevation now 00:20:38.43\00:20:41.40 that the clouds are now going by below me. 00:20:41.44\00:20:46.71 Hour after hour I marched on. 00:20:46.74\00:20:50.25 The best way to make it up 00:20:50.28\00:20:51.88 is to have a slow, steady hiking pace. 00:20:51.91\00:20:57.09 Eventually we'll make it to the top. 00:20:57.12\00:20:59.42 We've been hiking for hours. I need a break. 00:21:05.73\00:21:09.53 Actually I think I'm going to write in my journal. 00:21:09.56\00:21:11.80 Hundreds of layers can be deposited quickly. 00:21:23.21\00:21:29.18 Large canyons can be formed very quickly. 00:21:29.22\00:21:32.25 It's getting a lot colder as we go higher. 00:21:39.46\00:21:42.60 I'm sure glad I brought some extra layers to wear, 00:21:42.63\00:21:45.80 I'm also glad I brought a warmer hat, 00:21:45.83\00:21:48.10 but I'm sure gonna miss my regular hat. 00:21:48.14\00:21:50.24 Time to continue the climb. 00:21:53.81\00:21:56.21 As we go higher, I encounter crevasses now too. 00:21:56.24\00:22:00.65 Got to be careful not to fall into one of those. 00:22:00.68\00:22:04.22 Did you know the top 1300 feet of this mountain 00:22:04.25\00:22:08.22 was blown away when it erupted? 00:22:08.26\00:22:10.53 Wow! 00:22:10.56\00:22:12.39 I'm almost there a few more feet. 00:22:12.43\00:22:14.86 The view is incredible. 00:22:20.17\00:22:23.61 We are here at the rim of Mount St. Helens. 00:22:29.21\00:22:33.72 From here we can look down into the crater that was left 00:22:33.75\00:22:36.69 from the 1980 eruption. 00:22:36.72\00:22:39.25 In the middle of the crater, we can see the lava dome 00:22:42.39\00:22:45.66 where lava continues to form brand new rock. 00:22:45.69\00:22:51.60 Rock from the lava dome is recent. 00:22:51.63\00:22:53.84 There's no need to guess how old it is 00:22:53.87\00:22:55.47 because it's from the 1980 eruption. 00:22:55.50\00:22:57.87 Nevertheless, those new rocks down there 00:22:57.91\00:23:00.28 were tested with machines to see how old they were. 00:23:00.31\00:23:02.98 The results, 00:23:03.01\00:23:04.35 anywhere from 350,000 years old to 3 million years old. 00:23:04.38\00:23:10.55 Those dating machines are pretty neat, 00:23:10.59\00:23:12.25 but not too reliable yet. 00:23:12.29\00:23:14.62 At the Grand Canyon, some scientists tried to date 00:23:14.66\00:23:17.66 some of the rocks there, too, 00:23:17.69\00:23:19.29 and discovered that the machine said some of the rocks 00:23:19.33\00:23:21.76 at the top were older than the ones at the bottom. 00:23:21.80\00:23:25.37 That doesn't make sense. 00:23:25.40\00:23:27.30 But they're still trying to work on 00:23:27.34\00:23:28.77 perfecting those machines. 00:23:28.80\00:23:31.91 Don't believe everything people tell you, 00:23:31.94\00:23:34.18 when they tell you things are millions of years old. 00:23:34.21\00:23:37.35 You know, this is a pretty amazing view. 00:23:37.38\00:23:39.21 I think I'm going to sketch this view in my sketchbook. 00:23:39.25\00:23:41.32 You know, Mount St. Helens 00:23:45.15\00:23:46.69 is actually considered to be a small eruption. 00:23:46.72\00:23:50.09 Can you imagine what a large one would be like? 00:23:50.13\00:23:54.20 Wow. 00:23:54.23\00:23:55.56 Well, it's a long journey back. 00:23:58.47\00:24:00.94 We better get going.
