Welcome to Books of the Book. 00:00:22.28\00:00:24.55 We've been working our way through the letters of Paul 00:00:24.55\00:00:27.26 to the Thessalonians and we're coming now 00:00:27.26\00:00:29.66 to our concluding program. 00:00:29.66\00:00:31.43 We'll be looking at the end of Chapter 2 00:00:31.43\00:00:33.83 and Chapter 3 of Second Thessalonians. 00:00:33.83\00:00:37.17 I'm Jon Paulien, and with me is my Pastor Jon Ciccarelli. 00:00:37.17\00:00:42.00 Jon, it's good to be with you again. 00:00:42.00\00:00:44.17 We've been through quite a journey 00:00:44.17\00:00:45.47 and now we've reached our final episode 00:00:45.47\00:00:47.91 here in Second Thessalonians. 00:00:47.91\00:00:49.48 And its been rich and I look forward to the study today 00:00:49.48\00:00:52.85 and we're going to pick it up today 00:00:52.85\00:00:54.45 in Second Thessalonians, Chapter 2 00:00:54.45\00:00:56.35 verses 13 through Chapter 3, verses 18 00:00:56.35\00:00:59.92 and Paul is writing and he's writing them 00:00:59.92\00:01:03.93 about preserving their past, but yet having to deal 00:01:03.93\00:01:06.86 with the present and looking to the future as well. 00:01:06.86\00:01:10.27 And there might be some things that required change 00:01:10.27\00:01:13.23 and how do you, how do you stay true to the past, 00:01:13.23\00:01:16.27 but yet be relevant to the present. 00:01:16.27\00:01:17.91 We need to look at all those things today, 00:01:17.91\00:01:19.34 I think you'll guide us in that. 00:01:19.34\00:01:21.51 I think the major theme that we're looking at from 00:01:21.51\00:01:24.31 Chapter 2:13 through the end of Second Thessalonians 00:01:24.31\00:01:28.35 is the theme of tradition, the theme 00:01:28.35\00:01:31.25 of staying connected to the past. 00:01:31.25\00:01:33.99 Now churches have to grow, they're like plants, 00:01:33.99\00:01:36.73 if you don't grow, you're gonna die, 00:01:36.73\00:01:38.79 that means churches need to change. 00:01:38.79\00:01:40.63 Yeah. Change can be scary 00:01:40.63\00:01:42.33 but they need to change, but not all change is good. 00:01:42.33\00:01:45.60 Yeah. And I think Paul, 00:01:45.60\00:01:46.97 wants to make very clear here that as you considering change 00:01:46.97\00:01:51.04 as the necessary change that the church is going through 00:01:51.04\00:01:54.24 is happening, but you need to stay connected to the past. 00:01:54.24\00:01:57.55 You need to stay close to the best of the tradition 00:01:57.55\00:02:01.28 and the best concept to that term. 00:02:01.28\00:02:03.52 Yeah. I like that, Jon, its--you know, 00:02:03.52\00:02:07.56 growth always means change, 00:02:07.56\00:02:10.66 but change doesn't always mean growth. 00:02:10.66\00:02:12.69 Oh. You know, when something 00:02:12.69\00:02:14.73 is growing, when it's alive, its going to change. 00:02:14.73\00:02:17.93 You know, again I think of my, 00:02:17.93\00:02:19.30 my kids just using kids as an example. 00:02:19.30\00:02:21.60 My son you know, now 12 going to be 13 00:02:21.60\00:02:24.97 he's not the little boy he was, he now wears a size 10 00:02:24.97\00:02:27.74 you know, he's a big boy, thinking of plants they grow, 00:02:27.74\00:02:31.38 they change because they are growing 00:02:31.38\00:02:33.25 they weren't the seed, they once were. 00:02:33.25\00:02:35.05 And so I think if we're growing in God and we're bearing fruit, 00:02:35.05\00:02:39.29 we're going to see change. 00:02:39.29\00:02:41.76 But I think its also essential that, 00:02:41.76\00:02:44.39 that we be sensitive to the past, 00:02:44.39\00:02:47.10 because we can learn a lot from the past. 00:02:47.10\00:02:48.90 We don't want to forget what God has done. 00:02:48.90\00:02:51.27 You know, God is doing a new thing, 00:02:51.27\00:02:52.47 but we always-- He calls us to remember 00:02:52.47\00:02:54.80 as well what He has done you know, 00:02:54.80\00:02:56.60 I'm God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob you know, 00:02:56.60\00:02:59.91 but He is also Jesus. 00:02:59.91\00:03:01.44 And so I think that's important and so again just kind of 00:03:01.44\00:03:04.78 little plea for the multigenerational churches. 00:03:04.78\00:03:08.28 You know, because we need to remember. 00:03:08.28\00:03:10.22 So often times in my ministry when I've been with someone 00:03:10.22\00:03:13.89 who is, who is older than I and walk down the road. 00:03:13.89\00:03:16.79 I can be stressing out about something and they're all relax, 00:03:16.79\00:03:19.79 they go, I remember when that happened you know, 00:03:19.79\00:03:21.90 and then they talk about what happened. 00:03:21.90\00:03:23.40 And we need to keep those relationships, 00:03:23.40\00:03:26.03 the church needs to be, to be whole like that as well. 00:03:26.03\00:03:29.40 The tradition isn't always a good word. 00:03:29.40\00:03:31.54 I mean, tradition can simply be, 00:03:31.54\00:03:33.41 we've always done at that way before. 00:03:33.41\00:03:35.44 It means staying in the rut. 00:03:35.44\00:03:37.11 It's not what, Paul, is talking about here. 00:03:37.11\00:03:39.35 For him tradition is positive and the tradition here 00:03:39.35\00:03:43.18 is first of all the word of God that was brought 00:03:43.18\00:03:46.72 to them through the scriptures. 00:03:46.72\00:03:48.72 But before that was written down they were oral. 00:03:48.72\00:03:52.66 So he saw tradition is the word of God that came to them 00:03:52.66\00:03:55.13 in Jesus and the things that Paul was saying. 00:03:55.13\00:03:58.07 Second of all it's a spirit guided consensus 00:03:58.07\00:04:01.17 from the people of God led by the spirit come 00:04:01.17\00:04:03.71 to a consensus on what the word of God is. 00:04:03.71\00:04:06.31 That also is a positive tradition that we need 00:04:06.31\00:04:09.28 to stay connected to even though we may change, 00:04:09.28\00:04:12.05 even though we may worded differently, 00:04:12.05\00:04:14.65 never the less we need to stay connected 00:04:14.65\00:04:17.35 to that early tradition. 00:04:17.35\00:04:19.52 Why don't we get started with Chapter 2, verse 13 00:04:19.52\00:04:22.42 and I should probably remind our viewing audience 00:04:22.42\00:04:25.06 that the translations of Thessalonians 00:04:25.06\00:04:27.66 in these programs are my own design to catch 00:04:27.66\00:04:30.87 some of the new answers of Greek grammar and Greek words 00:04:30.87\00:04:34.54 that may help us understand what Paul, 00:04:34.54\00:04:36.24 was trying to get across. 00:04:36.24\00:04:38.47 Paul says in verse 13 of Chapter 2. 00:04:38.47\00:04:41.48 But we are obligated to give thanks to God always for you, 00:04:41.48\00:04:44.78 brethren loved by God, because God chose you 00:04:44.78\00:04:48.28 from the beginning as first fruits to salvation 00:04:48.28\00:04:51.49 in sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth. 00:04:51.49\00:04:55.59 The language here reminds us of the prayer 00:04:55.59\00:04:58.09 all the way back in First Thessalonians 1. 00:04:58.09\00:05:00.40 Its almost as if Paul knew that these two would be a package 00:05:00.40\00:05:04.27 and he brings the theme back 00:05:04.27\00:05:06.60 to all the way to the beginning here. 00:05:06.60\00:05:09.80 But I want to point out something 00:05:09.80\00:05:11.97 in the text as I translated it. 00:05:11.97\00:05:14.21 It says God is chosen you from the beginning 00:05:14.21\00:05:16.71 as first fruits to salvation. 00:05:16.71\00:05:19.25 Now here is interesting point, the Greek word here is aparkay 00:05:19.25\00:05:24.42 or as modern Greek might say it aparkee. 00:05:24.42\00:05:27.39 And if you take it as a single word aparkee means first fruits. 00:05:27.39\00:05:33.29 But if you separate it up- arkay, up means from, 00:05:33.29\00:05:39.37 so it's from arkay, ancient times archaeology. 00:05:39.37\00:05:43.27 Okay. From the beginning, 00:05:43.27\00:05:45.24 so we don't know if Paul, wrote from the beginning 00:05:45.24\00:05:49.58 or first fruits, because the original writing 00:05:49.58\00:05:54.28 didn't have spaces between the words. 00:05:54.28\00:05:56.65 So sometimes Bible translation difficulties, 00:05:56.65\00:06:00.06 manuscript difficulties come, because there were no spaces 00:06:00.06\00:06:03.56 between words and you're not sure if its one word or two. 00:06:03.56\00:06:06.93 So just a little piece of history there. 00:06:06.93\00:06:11.27 So if he's saying you are there from the beginning 00:06:11.27\00:06:16.17 he's saying God chose you, right from the beginning. 00:06:16.17\00:06:18.81 You know, He had a plan for you, 00:06:18.81\00:06:19.94 His foot prints were in your life before Paul got there. 00:06:19.94\00:06:22.78 If he's saying first fruits, he says we're offering you to God. 00:06:22.78\00:06:26.45 The first fruits were-- the early crops that 00:06:26.45\00:06:29.35 people brought to the temple. 00:06:29.35\00:06:30.42 And the Old Testament said, here God thank you 00:06:30.42\00:06:32.79 for the whole crop, but our thank you 00:06:32.79\00:06:34.89 is to bring you the first and the best. 00:06:34.89\00:06:37.69 That's good, that's good. 00:06:37.69\00:06:39.13 Lets move on to verse 15 here and Paul continues and he says. 00:06:39.13\00:06:44.07 So then, brothers, stand and hold fast 00:06:44.07\00:06:46.84 the traditions which you were taught, 00:06:46.84\00:06:49.17 whether by word of mouth or through our letter. 00:06:49.17\00:06:51.94 Yeah, we got to do that 'cause truth tends 00:06:51.94\00:06:54.74 to slip overtime if we're not careful. 00:06:54.74\00:06:59.08 That's, that's so true you know, its kind of like 00:06:59.08\00:07:02.22 unattended garden if you will, you know, a garden-- 00:07:02.22\00:07:06.76 I would love to have a garden, 00:07:06.76\00:07:08.89 but I am not very good attending that. 00:07:08.89\00:07:11.19 And so we actually have quite a bit of space at our house 00:07:11.19\00:07:14.30 with a vision for big garden and when I always try to start 00:07:14.30\00:07:18.17 a garden it always goes bad, 00:07:18.17\00:07:19.83 because I don't attend to it very well. 00:07:19.83\00:07:21.87 And so the weeds come up and everything else 00:07:21.87\00:07:23.94 and so fourth and it's just like the garden, 00:07:23.94\00:07:25.67 if we don't tend to the things of the past and the truths 00:07:25.67\00:07:29.08 that are important and essential, 00:07:29.08\00:07:31.11 then it does slip you know, weeds grow things happen 00:07:31.11\00:07:34.45 we have to give it that attention and intention. 00:07:34.45\00:07:37.99 Well, verse 15 the traditions that Paul's talking about 00:07:37.99\00:07:41.76 came to them by word of mouth and by letter. 00:07:41.76\00:07:44.83 So its two types of traditions here there's oral traditions 00:07:44.83\00:07:48.50 word of mouth, and there is written tradition 00:07:48.50\00:07:51.43 and both of those are important safeguards. 00:07:51.43\00:07:54.54 Oral traditions is less subject to intentional distortion 00:07:54.54\00:08:01.58 that's why preaching is still a good thing, 00:08:01.58\00:08:03.91 because when you're preaching you've got gestures, 00:08:03.91\00:08:07.38 you've got tone of voice, its hard to mistake 00:08:07.38\00:08:10.62 what a person is saying when they are preaching. 00:08:10.62\00:08:12.45 The same words written down can be less clear, 00:08:12.45\00:08:15.79 so oral tradition preserves us from intentional distortion 00:08:15.79\00:08:20.86 where people are trying to mess with it. 00:08:20.86\00:08:23.47 But written tradition is less subject 00:08:23.47\00:08:26.84 to unintentional distortion. 00:08:26.84\00:08:29.40 You know, overtime oral traditions tend to fade 00:08:29.40\00:08:32.87 and people start getting them confused you see, 00:08:32.87\00:08:36.21 having something written down make sure that it stays steady 00:08:36.21\00:08:41.98 as the years go by, so both types 00:08:41.98\00:08:43.92 of tradition are important. Yeah. 00:08:43.92\00:08:45.99 So, tradition was not a dirty word in the New Testament. 00:08:45.99\00:08:49.42 Yeah, it was essential to, to God's revelation 00:08:49.42\00:08:52.13 of His love to people, the remembering the saying 00:08:52.13\00:08:55.96 and actions of Jesus, you know, and the writing of the apostles. 00:08:55.96\00:09:01.04 You know, but yet we have to be careful 00:09:01.04\00:09:02.90 'cause Jesus said some pretty strong words in Mathew. 00:09:02.90\00:09:07.44 When He said to the religious leaders, 00:09:07.44\00:09:09.34 He said to them you nullify, or you invalidate 00:09:09.34\00:09:12.25 the word of God because of your traditions. 00:09:12.25\00:09:15.42 So we have to be really careful that we don't worship 00:09:15.42\00:09:18.32 the tradition themselves that we don't make them higher 00:09:18.32\00:09:20.99 than what God did through them 00:09:20.99\00:09:23.32 and what He is doing out for us in the present 00:09:23.32\00:09:25.03 and growing us to bring about that positive change 00:09:25.03\00:09:27.76 and transformation in our life as well. 00:09:27.76\00:09:29.86 One author said the seven last word of the church are, 00:09:29.86\00:09:34.04 we never did it that way before. 00:09:34.04\00:09:36.71 You see, that's a negative side of tradition. 00:09:36.71\00:09:38.87 That's the way we do things around here. 00:09:38.87\00:09:40.88 It fixes you in a place and plants can't be fixed, 00:09:40.88\00:09:46.31 they have to grow, they have to be changing 00:09:46.31\00:09:50.29 in order to stay healthy and because that is the case 00:09:50.29\00:09:54.49 church that just sticks with what they have done before 00:09:54.49\00:09:57.06 is not a church that's growing, its not in a healthy place. 00:09:57.06\00:10:00.73 Let's go on to Chapter 3 and verses 1 through 5, 00:10:00.73\00:10:04.40 I think I'll read that for us. 00:10:04.40\00:10:06.84 Finally, brothers, pray for us in order 00:10:06.84\00:10:10.04 that the word of the Lord might progress and be glorified, 00:10:10.04\00:10:14.51 just as it is with you. 00:10:14.51\00:10:16.88 Isn't that kind a humble he says, 00:10:16.88\00:10:18.58 you do you're progressing so much I hope 00:10:18.58\00:10:20.42 to keep up with you pray for me. 00:10:20.42\00:10:23.15 In order that we might be delivered from 00:10:23.15\00:10:26.15 out of place and evil men, for not all have faith. 00:10:26.15\00:10:30.13 I think I've met those guys anyway. 00:10:30.13\00:10:32.39 But faithful is the Lord, who will strengthen you 00:10:32.39\00:10:35.80 and guard you against evil. 00:10:35.80\00:10:38.80 Now here in the Greek it says the evil, 00:10:38.80\00:10:41.87 and it's not clear if its evil in general 00:10:41.87\00:10:44.04 or if its Satan in particular, 00:10:44.04\00:10:45.51 so that's why I put in both options there. 00:10:45.51\00:10:47.74 Guards you against evil or the evil one. 00:10:47.74\00:10:50.25 And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you 00:10:50.25\00:10:53.11 that what we command you are doing and will continue to do. 00:10:53.11\00:10:58.75 Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God 00:10:58.75\00:11:03.12 and into the patient endurance of Christ. 00:11:03.12\00:11:08.20 Finally bothers, he says at the beginning. 00:11:08.20\00:11:11.03 That's how Paul loves to end a letter. 00:11:11.03\00:11:14.00 Finally brothers, its family, he reminds us 00:11:14.00\00:11:17.21 this is all about family and family has to be aware 00:11:17.21\00:11:21.94 that there is evil in the world. 00:11:21.94\00:11:23.98 There are threats to the family, 00:11:23.98\00:11:25.88 there is an evil one who is working everything 00:11:25.88\00:11:29.52 with the goal of undermining what God 00:11:29.52\00:11:31.79 is doing and sometimes even shows himself. 00:11:31.79\00:11:34.59 Yeah. Its could be a scary thing you know, 00:11:36.16\00:11:40.50 you brought this out in a, in a previous episode 00:11:40.50\00:11:43.47 and I thought it was so powerful that when the Gospel 00:11:43.47\00:11:46.20 is powerful Satan is forced to be reveal himself you know, 00:11:46.20\00:11:50.41 that, that when he's trying as hard as-he's throwing 00:11:50.41\00:11:53.94 everything he can to stop people from knowing 00:11:53.94\00:11:56.51 the love of God and that's, that could be a scary thing. 00:11:56.51\00:12:01.15 But yet if we trust in Christ you know, 00:12:01.15\00:12:03.02 we have that strength you know, the greater is He 00:12:03.02\00:12:04.62 who is in us than he who is in the world. 00:12:04.62\00:12:06.79 But you think of stuff in the world like maybe I know 00:12:06.79\00:12:09.02 we're talking just a week about Africa You know, 00:12:09.02\00:12:11.93 I mean, what are some things you see in Africa. 00:12:11.93\00:12:14.36 In Africa the Christian are seeing 00:12:14.36\00:12:17.20 satanic manifestations all the time. 00:12:17.20\00:12:20.27 You know, maybe we shouldn't if everything is going smoothly 00:12:20.27\00:12:23.14 we shouldn't be too comfortable about that 'cause maybe 00:12:23.14\00:12:25.34 Satan's not disturbed about what we are doing. 00:12:25.34\00:12:28.71 I have had a couple of encounters 00:12:28.71\00:12:30.95 with the demonic and its not fun. 00:12:30.95\00:12:32.78 But I will tell you this that Satan's got somebody greater 00:12:32.78\00:12:38.62 than him, its not me, if I'm close to Jesus Christ, 00:12:38.62\00:12:42.66 if the name, the power, and the blood of Jesus Christ 00:12:42.66\00:12:45.69 is in my heart, Satan cannot hurt me 00:12:45.69\00:12:48.96 and his power can be dealt with. 00:12:48.96\00:12:52.00 There's a greater power in the world than Satan. 00:12:52.00\00:12:55.07 And so Paul is asking for two blessings 00:12:55.07\00:12:58.51 one that his work will prosper and grow 00:12:58.51\00:13:01.41 and the others that he'll be delivered from 00:13:01.41\00:13:03.41 these out of place and evil men. 00:13:03.41\00:13:06.92 And then he says that the Lord will direct your hearts 00:13:06.92\00:13:11.09 into the love of God, the patient endurance of Christ. 00:13:11.09\00:13:15.56 And isn't that the goal of the spiritual life you know, 00:13:15.56\00:13:18.49 to be directed into the love of God 00:13:18.49\00:13:22.36 and to be like Christ patient and endurance. 00:13:22.36\00:13:26.87 Through our love we want to be more like God. 00:13:26.87\00:13:29.30 Absolutely. And our patients will be 00:13:29.30\00:13:31.47 more like Jesus Christ. Yeah. 00:13:31.47\00:13:33.44 That's beautiful. Well, its time for a break, 00:13:33.44\00:13:36.64 and when we return 00:13:36.64\00:13:37.75 we will continue with Second Thessalonians 3. 00:13:37.75\00:13:40.78
