Welcome back to the Books of the Book. 00:00:01.00\00:00:02.63 We're in Second Thessalonians Chapter 2. 00:00:02.63\00:00:04.97 And Jon, we are ready. We are seat belted. 00:00:04.97\00:00:08.37 We are ready for the ride. 00:00:08.37\00:00:09.84 This is gonna be, this gonna be a lot of 00:00:09.84\00:00:11.97 great stuff, heavy stuff in the several minutes 00:00:11.97\00:00:14.58 that we have together. So, take us there. 00:00:14.58\00:00:16.98 All right, one of the toughest, most challenging passages, 00:00:16.98\00:00:20.18 hope you have your thinking cap on. 00:00:20.18\00:00:22.75 In verses 5 through 7, one of the key things 00:00:22.75\00:00:26.12 and you can see it in the translation 00:00:26.12\00:00:27.92 just a little bit that we gave you, 00:00:27.92\00:00:29.99 but there is a neuter masculine pattern. 00:00:29.99\00:00:33.63 In other words, there is a restraining power here. 00:00:33.63\00:00:37.17 What that which restrains? 00:00:37.17\00:00:39.83 But then it's also, He Who restrains. 00:00:39.83\00:00:42.97 So it's neuter, that which restrains. 00:00:42.97\00:00:46.11 And it's masculine, He Who restrains. 00:00:46.11\00:00:50.01 But the same thing is true of this lawlessness. 00:00:50.01\00:00:53.42 You have a man of lawlessness, that's masculine. 00:00:53.42\00:00:56.65 You have a mystery of lawlessness, that's neuter. 00:00:56.65\00:00:59.79 You have never seen this in English 00:00:59.79\00:01:01.16 that's why I am taking the time. 00:01:01.16\00:01:02.69 Why this is such a challenging text. 00:01:02.69\00:01:04.89 Not only that. There is Jesus who comes. 00:01:04.89\00:01:09.50 The Lord Himself is a He but He destroys the wicked 00:01:09.50\00:01:13.40 by the breath of His mouth, which is neuter. 00:01:13.40\00:01:16.91 So, Paul whatever you want to identify this restrainer 00:01:16.91\00:01:21.51 or this man of sin, it's got to be something 00:01:21.51\00:01:24.18 that's both neuter and masculine 00:01:24.18\00:01:26.78 and that complicates the understanding tremendously. 00:01:26.78\00:01:30.89 Furthermore, at the end of verse seven, 00:01:30.89\00:01:33.86 it talks about, "He Who now restrains 00:01:33.86\00:01:36.73 will continue until He is out of the way." 00:01:36.73\00:01:41.33 Now He is out of the way, my translation, 00:01:41.33\00:01:44.17 some people say till he is taken out of way. 00:01:44.17\00:01:46.97 Some people say, till He was drowsed. 00:01:46.97\00:01:49.94 You can translate it either way, 00:01:49.94\00:01:51.81 so translations tends to go one way or the other. 00:01:51.81\00:01:54.54 But it's actually neutral until He is out of the way. 00:01:54.54\00:01:58.65 It doesn't tell us whether He's an active agent. 00:01:58.65\00:02:01.58 I will stay here until I feel like going. 00:02:01.58\00:02:04.49 Or if He's a subordinate agent 00:02:04.49\00:02:07.82 I'll stay here until somebody kicks me out. 00:02:07.82\00:02:10.83 The text isn't clear on which it is 00:02:10.83\00:02:12.96 and it's crucial to understanding this text. 00:02:12.96\00:02:16.10 Because who is the restrainer. 00:02:16.10\00:02:18.57 Is it some earthly power that is subject to God and His rule? 00:02:18.57\00:02:25.31 Or is it God Himself who removes Himself when the time is right. 00:02:25.31\00:02:29.74 So it's God everything is going by my plan 00:02:29.74\00:02:31.61 when the time is right I will get out of the way 00:02:31.61\00:02:33.21 and everything's gonna take place. 00:02:33.21\00:02:35.52 That part is not clear. So who is this restrainer? 00:02:35.52\00:02:40.22 Because Paul is saying, this man of sin, 00:02:40.22\00:02:42.59 this man of lawlessness will be revealed. 00:02:42.59\00:02:45.59 But right now He's being restrained. 00:02:45.59\00:02:48.70 So as Paul is speaking, a restrainer is already 00:02:48.70\00:02:51.47 at work whoever it is. 00:02:51.47\00:02:53.13 Is that work in Paul's day. 00:02:53.13\00:02:55.47 It's a law upholding power 00:02:55.47\00:02:57.07 because it's restraining lawlessness. 00:02:57.07\00:03:00.44 He's on a divine time mission. 00:03:00.44\00:03:02.78 I mean ultimately who can restrain Satan? 00:03:02.78\00:03:05.55 Only God. Yeah, right. 00:03:05.55\00:03:07.45 So and who can hold back the second coming? 00:03:07.45\00:03:10.29 Satan can't, only God. 00:03:10.29\00:03:12.55 So this is a law abiding power that's operating 00:03:12.55\00:03:17.36 on a divine plan, a divine time mission. 00:03:17.36\00:03:20.46 And at some point He leaves the scene. 00:03:20.46\00:03:23.63 The Earthly scene and allows this man 00:03:23.63\00:03:26.27 of lawlessness to be fully revealed. 00:03:26.27\00:03:30.17 So and it's neuter masculine. 00:03:30.17\00:03:32.71 So you have all of these complications and scholars 00:03:32.71\00:03:35.94 have gone a number of different ways 00:03:35.94\00:03:37.75 trying to figure out who it is. 00:03:37.75\00:03:39.58 But the two possibilities that I think are most likely 00:03:39.58\00:03:43.42 is one of them is the idea of Rome 00:03:43.42\00:03:46.79 that the restraining force is the Roman Empire, 00:03:46.79\00:03:51.66 and that the restrainer is the Roman emperor. 00:03:51.66\00:03:55.63 And that of course would be subordinate power to God 00:03:55.63\00:03:58.03 would be removed in God's timing. 00:03:58.03\00:04:01.74 And many early Christians believe this. 00:04:01.74\00:04:04.47 A number of the early writers like Hippolytus and others 00:04:04.47\00:04:09.14 wrote on these things and they had the idea 00:04:09.14\00:04:11.78 that as long as the Roman Empire is going, 00:04:11.78\00:04:15.28 the apostasy won't come. 00:04:15.28\00:04:16.65 The apostasy will be after the Roman Empire falls. 00:04:16.65\00:04:20.76 That's was a common belief and when the Roman Empire fell, 00:04:20.76\00:04:24.43 people started looking for the apostasy. 00:04:24.43\00:04:27.03 And you can see that in the early church writings 00:04:27.03\00:04:29.46 but there's an other option. 00:04:29.46\00:04:31.30 And the other option is that the restrainer is God, 00:04:31.30\00:04:34.97 because only God can restrain Satan. 00:04:34.97\00:04:37.37 Right. And the restraining force 00:04:37.37\00:04:39.57 then would be the gospel, 00:04:39.57\00:04:42.51 as the gospel is going forth it's restraining evil. 00:04:42.51\00:04:46.68 It's restraining lawlessness, it's restraining apostasy. 00:04:46.68\00:04:50.32 But when the gospel stops being preached, 00:04:50.32\00:04:54.46 oh the devil breaks loose in the world. 00:04:54.46\00:04:59.06 So those are the two options 00:04:59.06\00:05:01.86 that I think are the best options for understanding 00:05:01.86\00:05:04.57 who this restrainer in this passage is. 00:05:04.57\00:05:07.67 Well, that second option of God being the restrainer. 00:05:07.67\00:05:11.27 Seems to make sense to me, it agrees with the words 00:05:11.27\00:05:15.64 of the Jesus when He talks about the gospel 00:05:15.64\00:05:17.48 we preach in the all the world and then the end will come. 00:05:17.48\00:05:20.22 Right. Matthew 24. 00:05:20.22\00:05:21.72 Right and then in the Revelation 14 00:05:21.72\00:05:24.09 John the Revelator. You know, 00:05:24.09\00:05:25.25 that first angel's message out of the Three Angels message, 00:05:25.25\00:05:27.92 having the Eternal Gospel and then announcing 00:05:27.92\00:05:30.83 the hour of the judgment has come. 00:05:30.83\00:05:32.93 So you see in Jesus and in Revelation it seems to point 00:05:32.93\00:05:37.53 that the restrainer would be God Himself. 00:05:37.53\00:05:40.40 Amen. And one possibility we have to keep in mind 00:05:40.40\00:05:44.61 is that maybe it could be both, because in the western mind, 00:05:44.61\00:05:49.51 we kind of say, it's gotta be this or it's gotta be that. 00:05:49.51\00:05:51.91 And sometimes in the Hebrew way of thinking, 00:05:51.91\00:05:54.18 there can be a tension between two possibilities 00:05:54.18\00:05:57.29 and maybe both of them could possibly 00:05:57.29\00:05:59.92 be right in their own way. 00:05:59.92\00:06:01.19 And we'll explore that a bit further. 00:06:01.19\00:06:03.12 But why don't we move ahead to verses 8 through 10. 00:06:03.12\00:06:05.66 Okay. In verses 8 to 10 Paul writes, 00:06:05.66\00:06:09.80 "And then the lawless one will be revealed, 00:06:09.80\00:06:12.60 whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow by the breath 00:06:12.60\00:06:15.30 of his mouth and bring an end to by the brightness 00:06:15.30\00:06:19.74 of His coming, whose coming is according 00:06:19.74\00:06:22.28 to the working of Satan in all kinds of miracles 00:06:22.28\00:06:24.51 and signs and lying wonders and in every deception 00:06:24.51\00:06:27.48 of unrighteousness among those who are being destroyed." 00:06:27.48\00:06:31.62 Now you see, at some point comes this revelation of lawlessness. 00:06:31.62\00:06:37.29 The restraint is removed, then there is the Revelation 00:06:37.29\00:06:41.46 and the context of these verses is the second coming of Jesus. 00:06:41.46\00:06:45.63 You see that would be in support of the idea 00:06:45.63\00:06:48.34 that the restraint is the preaching 00:06:48.34\00:06:49.87 of a gospel and God's plan. Yeah. 00:06:49.87\00:06:52.14 And that when that restraint is removed, 00:06:52.14\00:06:54.34 when the gospel is no longer going forth to the world, 00:06:54.34\00:06:57.35 then evil will be allowed to show its full force, 00:06:57.35\00:07:01.05 will become public and obvious. 00:07:01.05\00:07:03.35 So that's one possibility. 00:07:03.35\00:07:05.79 Others however have suggested if the restrainer 00:07:05.79\00:07:08.69 is the Roman Empire, then the revelation of 00:07:08.69\00:07:12.63 lawlessness would be when the apostasy 00:07:12.63\00:07:15.06 in the church becomes public knowledge. 00:07:15.06\00:07:17.93 And so they would point to the idea that the Middle Ages 00:07:17.93\00:07:21.60 with all the excesses of the papacy in the Middle Ages 00:07:21.60\00:07:25.74 would be the place where this revelation took place. 00:07:25.74\00:07:29.48 So with the other view you could say, yes, 00:07:29.48\00:07:31.51 the Middle Ages was the mystery of lawlessness. 00:07:31.51\00:07:34.58 It's the place where, I mean, this is the church. 00:07:34.58\00:07:37.95 Yeah. And so people are saying, 00:07:37.95\00:07:39.25 this must be where God is. 00:07:39.25\00:07:41.02 And it isn't so obvious to everyone but at the end 00:07:41.02\00:07:44.36 it will become obvious to everyone. 00:07:44.36\00:07:47.46 And this is a painful truth in many ways, 00:07:47.46\00:07:50.10 to realize that opposition to God can have a Christian face. 00:07:50.10\00:07:55.07 Yeah, you know, I think if we're honest 00:07:55.07\00:07:57.84 we have to face ourselves and say, 00:07:57.84\00:08:00.48 you know, that's tension we constantly live with sin 00:08:00.48\00:08:03.65 is that opposition to the kingdom of God in my own life. 00:08:03.65\00:08:07.25 You know of really allowing that's surrender we talk about, 00:08:07.25\00:08:10.62 of really allowing Christ to reign over my life. 00:08:10.62\00:08:14.46 When Jesus came He said, I have come now 00:08:14.46\00:08:16.49 to proclaim the kingdom of God. 00:08:16.49\00:08:18.56 That you can now enter into the reigning of God. 00:08:18.56\00:08:20.33 And that's the good news, but the tension always 00:08:20.33\00:08:22.73 is trying to keep the control, 00:08:22.73\00:08:24.93 trying to keep me on the throne if you will. 00:08:24.93\00:08:28.94 Instead of letting Christ reign. 00:08:28.94\00:08:30.57 And so there are the struggle of pride and self centeredness 00:08:30.57\00:08:33.81 that definitely happen even after you're a Christian, 00:08:33.81\00:08:36.85 you know, wrestling with that. 00:08:36.85\00:08:37.91 It was a bit of a warning for all of us. 00:08:37.91\00:08:39.55 I think so. In this. 00:08:39.55\00:08:40.82 Yeah. I think even pope recently 00:08:40.82\00:08:45.35 has admitted that the excesses of the papacy 00:08:45.35\00:08:48.19 in the Middle Ages undermined the gospel 00:08:48.19\00:08:50.99 and often did great harm to many godly people. 00:08:50.99\00:08:55.30 But I would point out, there's a difference 00:08:55.30\00:08:56.80 between a system and the people who are in the system. 00:08:56.80\00:09:00.44 This is not about Catholics. 00:09:00.44\00:09:02.34 It's about a system that was often well meaning. 00:09:02.34\00:09:06.51 I think it, the system came into existence 00:09:06.51\00:09:08.88 through lots of little decisions, 00:09:08.88\00:09:10.75 the unintended consequences of which 00:09:10.75\00:09:13.25 where a system that often did harm as much as it did good. 00:09:13.25\00:09:18.85 And so, in that context we understand. 00:09:18.85\00:09:23.29 We're not talking about individuals here 00:09:23.29\00:09:25.03 but recognizing that even religion. 00:09:25.03\00:09:28.10 Religion means well, it's trying to serve God 00:09:28.10\00:09:31.87 and to honor something that God has done in the world. 00:09:31.87\00:09:34.80 But often religion gets more 00:09:34.80\00:09:36.30 focused in preserving institutions. 00:09:36.30\00:09:38.61 Yeah. Than in honoring God 00:09:38.61\00:09:40.48 and when that happens when money and wealth 00:09:40.48\00:09:42.44 and power become where it's at. 00:09:42.44\00:09:45.25 Then even though it has a Christian face, 00:09:45.25\00:09:47.75 it can be working against God. 00:09:47.75\00:09:49.25 Yeah. It can become scary really fast. 00:09:49.25\00:09:52.45 And in the final crisis, there will be no more mysteries. 00:09:52.45\00:09:58.39 All these things will be exposed. 00:09:58.39\00:10:00.13 History will become perfectly clear but prophecy gives us 00:10:00.13\00:10:03.47 windows into that history ahead of time. 00:10:03.47\00:10:06.07 Yeah, yeah. 00:10:06.07\00:10:07.70 Well, John, shall we move on to the next verse. 00:10:07.70\00:10:10.34 I think we need to. Okay let's do that. 00:10:10.34\00:10:12.37 Verses 10 through 12 Paul says, "Because they did not receive 00:10:12.37\00:10:16.98 the love of the truth in order that they might be saved, 00:10:16.98\00:10:20.42 and for this reason God sends them a working of deception 00:10:20.42\00:10:24.49 in order that they might believe the lie. 00:10:24.49\00:10:27.09 In order that all might be judged who did not 00:10:27.09\00:10:29.89 believe the truth, but delighted in unrighteousness." 00:10:29.89\00:10:34.40 Wow! John, that kind of gives me a major reaction 00:10:34.40\00:10:37.37 if you will--it sounds, it sounds terrible. 00:10:37.37\00:10:39.63 God sending a working of deception. 00:10:39.63\00:10:41.37 Yeah. Now, you're gonna have to really unpack this one. 00:10:41.37\00:10:44.87 God sending a delusion some translations have it. 00:10:44.87\00:10:48.34 What it's clear from the context is, 00:10:48.34\00:10:50.55 this deception exposes decisions that have already been made. 00:10:50.55\00:10:55.65 This revelation of lawlessness is exposing 00:10:55.65\00:10:58.42 what's going on, it's not creating it. 00:10:58.42\00:11:00.79 God sends a deception at the end in order to expose 00:11:00.79\00:11:05.29 the working of Satan, even within the church. 00:11:05.29\00:11:09.23 Those who are deceived or those who have 00:11:09.23\00:11:11.93 refused to receive the love of the truth. 00:11:11.93\00:11:15.37 There's three people in the world 00:11:15.37\00:11:16.44 those who love the truth, those who hate the truth 00:11:16.44\00:11:19.14 and that mass in the middle 00:11:19.14\00:11:20.48 that's kind of confused, you see. 00:11:20.48\00:11:23.08 In the end all of that will be exposed all that would be 00:11:23.08\00:11:26.85 revealed and the whole world will know who's on what side. 00:11:26.85\00:11:30.52 You know, we talk about truth more. 00:11:30.52\00:11:32.19 What is, what truth? 00:11:32.19\00:11:35.62 And there was a statement that Jesus 00:11:35.62\00:11:37.29 made that gets quoted often. 00:11:37.29\00:11:39.06 It says, and you shall know the truth 00:11:39.06\00:11:40.66 and the truth shall make you free. 00:11:40.66\00:11:43.06 But so often the verse just before 00:11:43.06\00:11:45.20 that and what Jesus said. 00:11:45.20\00:11:46.77 He says if you abide in my word, 00:11:46.77\00:11:48.97 you are my disciples indeed. 00:11:48.97\00:11:50.67 And then you will know the truth 00:11:50.67\00:11:52.24 and the truth will set you free. 00:11:52.24\00:11:54.54 You know and so I think it's important that we remember 00:11:54.54\00:11:57.25 the focus on Christ, of Him reigning 00:11:57.25\00:12:00.38 in our life and letting him reign. 00:12:00.38\00:12:03.49 Letting Him rule our lives and as we abide in His word 00:12:03.49\00:12:07.69 and in His truth, that also protects us 00:12:07.69\00:12:10.36 from self deception if you will. 00:12:10.36\00:12:12.43 It's interesting that my favorite author 00:12:13.80\00:12:16.33 outside of scriptures studied this text 00:12:16.33\00:12:18.43 and had some interesting things to say. 00:12:18.43\00:12:20.54 She would have said both. Both the restrainers. 00:12:20.54\00:12:25.01 Both the men of sin are there. 00:12:25.01\00:12:27.48 For example, regarding the Middle Ages, 00:12:27.48\00:12:30.25 she says, not till after the great apostasy 00:12:30.25\00:12:33.28 and long period of the reign of the man of sin. 00:12:33.28\00:12:35.78 Can we look for the advent of our Lord. 00:12:35.78\00:12:38.05 The man of sin, which is also styled mystery of iniquity 00:12:38.05\00:12:40.89 represents the papacy, which is foretold in prophecy 00:12:40.89\00:12:44.43 was to maintain its supremacy for 1260 years, 00:12:44.43\00:12:47.56 that's from Great Controversy, page 356. 00:12:47.56\00:12:50.70 But then later on in page 624 and 625, 00:12:50.70\00:12:55.17 she talks about the crowning act of the great drama of deception. 00:12:55.17\00:12:58.61 Satan himself will personate Christ. 00:12:58.61\00:13:02.38 In gentle compassion tones, he represents some of the same 00:13:02.38\00:13:05.58 gracious heavenly truths that the Savior uttered. 00:13:05.58\00:13:08.32 Heals the diseases of the people 00:13:08.32\00:13:10.49 and then assuming the character of Christ, 00:13:10.49\00:13:13.29 he claims to have changed Sabbath to Sunday 00:13:13.29\00:13:15.42 and commands all to hallow the day that he has blessed. 00:13:15.42\00:13:18.99 Only those diligent students of scripture will be shielded 00:13:18.99\00:13:22.70 from these powerful delusions. 00:13:22.70\00:13:24.83 So she sees are both end in this text, 00:13:24.83\00:13:27.97 that we've discovered here. 00:13:27.97\00:13:29.20 Yeah, well, it's been great studying this Jon 00:13:29.20\00:13:31.97 and it's been great being with you. 00:13:31.97\00:13:33.48 Knowledge is important but it's not everything. 00:13:33.48\00:13:35.54 It's abiding Christ. Until next time, 00:13:35.54\00:13:37.35 we'll see you. God bless. 00:13:37.35\00:13:38.51
