Welcome to "Books of the Book." 00:00:22.58\00:00:24.79 We're studying Second Thessalonians, 00:00:24.79\00:00:26.79 A letter of Paul to the church at Thessalonica. 00:00:26.79\00:00:29.86 I'm Jon Paulien and with me today 00:00:29.86\00:00:32.06 is my Pastor Jon Ciccarelli. 00:00:32.06\00:00:34.56 John, good to be with you again 00:00:34.56\00:00:35.66 as we continue our study in Second Thessalonians, 00:00:35.66\00:00:38.57 we'll be in Chapter 2 verses 1 through 12. 00:00:38.57\00:00:40.50 And here Paul, puts his Pastoral head on 00:00:40.50\00:00:44.21 and he's talking to the Thessalonians 00:00:44.21\00:00:45.67 about some end-time events 00:00:45.67\00:00:48.08 and they have some misunderstandings 00:00:48.08\00:00:49.41 and he's gonna do some correcting a bit of their views. 00:00:49.41\00:00:51.55 So I'm looking forward to our study together today. 00:00:51.55\00:00:54.35 All right. Well, like he did in First Thessalonians. 00:00:54.35\00:00:57.42 He's moving from affirmation and encouragement in Chapter 1, 00:00:57.42\00:01:01.69 now he's moving to exhortation to correction. 00:01:01.69\00:01:05.53 Now, there are some problems here 00:01:05.53\00:01:07.13 and I have to tell you, 00:01:07.13\00:01:08.83 one of my beloved teachers said to me a long time ago. 00:01:08.83\00:01:13.00 Second Thessalonians Chapter 2 00:01:13.00\00:01:15.44 is the most difficult passage 00:01:15.44\00:01:17.94 in the entire New Testament to understand. 00:01:17.94\00:01:20.44 Now, I've got a few rivals for that 00:01:20.44\00:01:21.88 like the seven trumpets of Revelation 00:01:21.88\00:01:23.91 and maybe the middle part of Revelation 17. 00:01:23.91\00:01:27.45 Those are pretty challenging passages too. 00:01:27.45\00:01:29.28 But this is really a challenging passage, 00:01:29.28\00:01:32.69 because in a real sense we don't have all the evidence. 00:01:32.69\00:01:37.43 Would you read maybe verse 5 00:01:37.43\00:01:38.89 and I think Paul explains our problem 00:01:38.89\00:01:41.50 even though he didn't realize it at the time. Sure. 00:01:41.50\00:01:44.07 He says, "Don't you remember 00:01:45.07\00:01:47.04 that when I was with you I told you these things?" 00:01:47.04\00:01:50.31 All right, so that's the background of this passage. 00:01:50.31\00:01:54.31 He starts telling them, so this-- 00:01:54.31\00:01:55.84 oh, I don't know and I don't need to tell you this, 00:01:55.84\00:01:57.51 you already know this and you know that 00:01:57.51\00:01:59.78 and you know the other thing. 00:01:59.78\00:02:01.68 Second Thessalonians 2 is something like listening 00:02:01.68\00:02:05.12 to one side of a phone conversation 00:02:05.12\00:02:07.79 and you're hearing what the one person is saying, 00:02:07.79\00:02:10.93 you don't know what the other side knows, 00:02:10.93\00:02:12.89 you don't know what they're saying, 00:02:12.89\00:02:14.46 you don't know what they're asking. 00:02:14.46\00:02:16.23 And so there's a lot of mystery in this text. 00:02:16.23\00:02:19.80 Paul had a specific purpose at that time in place. 00:02:19.80\00:02:22.87 God would like us to mind this passage for some things 00:02:22.87\00:02:27.48 that will encourage us today, Bible prophecy. 00:02:27.48\00:02:31.11 But I have to admit, at the end of the day 00:02:31.11\00:02:35.15 we're not certain about everything 00:02:35.15\00:02:36.85 that's going on in this passage. 00:02:36.85\00:02:39.09 Many challenging features, but there was a goal, 00:02:39.09\00:02:42.89 the reason why He gave this and what was that? 00:02:42.89\00:02:46.29 So, Jon, the goal here is pastoral. 00:02:46.29\00:02:49.26 That he is really wanting to care for, 00:02:49.26\00:02:51.37 He is not laying everything out 00:02:51.37\00:02:52.63 specifically like we might like. 00:02:52.63\00:02:54.37 He's speaking specifically to their situation 00:02:54.37\00:02:57.44 which, of course, we probably like to know more about, but-- 00:02:57.44\00:03:01.08 So this is not like Daniel 2 00:03:01.08\00:03:03.11 or something where the whole prophecy is right there, 00:03:03.11\00:03:06.28 where we can see it and get a handle on. 00:03:06.28\00:03:08.75 He's speaking to them. 00:03:08.75\00:03:10.32 Some of things we'd like to know aren't here. Yeah, yeah. 00:03:10.32\00:03:14.09 Well, let's, let's move on to verses 1 to 3, 00:03:14.09\00:03:17.26 where he continues to write to them. 00:03:17.26\00:03:19.49 He says, "Now with the reference to the coming 00:03:19.49\00:03:21.46 of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering to Him, 00:03:21.46\00:03:24.67 we implore you, brothers, 00:03:24.67\00:03:26.23 that you might not be quickly shaken from your mind, 00:03:26.23\00:03:28.90 or disturbed, either by a spirit, 00:03:28.90\00:03:30.87 or a word, or a letter, as it were from us, 00:03:30.87\00:03:33.94 implying that the Day of the Lord has already come. 00:03:33.94\00:03:36.54 Do not let anyone deceive you in any way." 00:03:36.54\00:03:40.45 I think it's one thing I want to say right from the start. 00:03:40.45\00:03:43.72 I mentioned in the previous program 00:03:43.72\00:03:45.29 how there are certain Greek words 00:03:45.29\00:03:47.76 that Paul uses whenever he's answering a question 00:03:47.76\00:03:50.33 from the church. That's not here. 00:03:50.33\00:03:53.19 In another words the church 00:03:53.19\00:03:54.23 isn't asking for help on the subject. 00:03:54.23\00:03:56.93 Paul is introducing help on the subject 00:03:56.93\00:03:59.37 'cause he's concerned about it. 00:03:59.37\00:04:00.54 Now, there are asking they're fine. All right. 00:04:00.54\00:04:02.40 They think they've got it all together. 00:04:02.40\00:04:04.24 So Paul is stepping and say 00:04:04.24\00:04:05.74 wait now, wait a minute we got some problems here 00:04:05.74\00:04:08.58 and I'm aware that we've some problems. 00:04:08.58\00:04:10.35 So Paul is addressing, 00:04:10.35\00:04:11.35 he is being the disruptive prophet. 00:04:11.35\00:04:13.68 We mentioned in earlier programs 00:04:13.68\00:04:15.15 and sometimes we read the Bible simply to comfort us 00:04:15.15\00:04:18.75 in what we already believe. 00:04:18.75\00:04:20.09 Simply to support what we already think. Right. 00:04:20.09\00:04:23.66 And truly prophets were almost always disruptive 00:04:23.66\00:04:28.00 when they're living prophets. 00:04:28.00\00:04:29.50 God sends him into the situation to break people 00:04:29.50\00:04:32.80 out of this comfortable complacency that they're in. 00:04:32.80\00:04:36.47 This is what Paul is doing. 00:04:36.47\00:04:37.64 They think they've got it right, 00:04:37.64\00:04:38.84 he says no you don't, here's your problem. Right. 00:04:38.84\00:04:41.34 So, he's moving in on this one. 00:04:41.34\00:04:44.08 A lot of the language here in Second Thessalonians 2 00:04:44.08\00:04:47.58 especially these first verses echoes, the language of Jesus 00:04:47.58\00:04:52.39 and it's also echoes the language 00:04:52.39\00:04:54.02 of First Thessalonians 4 and 5 00:04:54.02\00:04:56.59 where he is addressing the same subject. 00:04:56.59\00:04:58.73 So Paul has the first letter in mind. 00:04:58.73\00:05:01.26 He also has some other sayings of Jesus in mind 00:05:01.26\00:05:05.37 as His writings Second Thessalonians 2. 00:05:05.37\00:05:08.97 Now there is confusion in the church 00:05:08.97\00:05:11.61 and there seems to be three possible sources says 00:05:11.61\00:05:15.14 they've been shaken or disturbed by a spirit 00:05:15.14\00:05:19.95 or a word or a letter as it were from us, 00:05:19.95\00:05:24.82 implying that the day of the Lord has already come. 00:05:24.82\00:05:27.39 So Paul doesn't seem to be exactly clear 00:05:27.39\00:05:31.39 why did they get off on this track? 00:05:31.39\00:05:33.70 Was it a spirit, some prophetic teaching, 00:05:33.70\00:05:36.36 did somebody step up and say hey, 00:05:36.36\00:05:38.47 the Lord has shown me this is where we need to go 00:05:38.47\00:05:41.07 or was it a word, a rumor 00:05:41.07\00:05:43.74 or something that came on the grapevine, 00:05:43.74\00:05:46.41 do you know, or was it a letter, 00:05:46.41\00:05:49.41 was it First Thessalonians that triggered this 00:05:49.41\00:05:53.05 or was it some other letter 00:05:53.05\00:05:54.55 that claimed to be from Paul and wasn't. 00:05:54.55\00:05:57.09 Paul isn't clear exactly, how they got off track? 00:05:57.09\00:06:00.92 But he knows that they're off track 00:06:00.92\00:06:03.56 and that's what he's gonna deal with Him. 00:06:03.56\00:06:05.49 What exactly the problem is the language isn't clear 00:06:05.49\00:06:09.10 if they were teaching that the Second coming 00:06:09.10\00:06:11.47 is almost there or that it's already there. 00:06:11.47\00:06:15.07 And I think most scholars would go with the already there 00:06:15.07\00:06:18.27 because the whole point of Chapter one is saying, 00:06:18.27\00:06:21.41 that the coming of Jesus gonna be so visible, 00:06:21.41\00:06:24.58 so noisy, so disruptive, you're not gonna miss it. 00:06:24.58\00:06:29.05 If Jesus has already come, 00:06:29.05\00:06:31.65 somebody is living in fantasy land. 00:06:31.65\00:06:33.39 So he's translating, no he hasn't come. 00:06:33.39\00:06:35.62 These things should have to happen first. 00:06:35.62\00:06:37.19 Yeah, and it's almost like they kind of the failed 00:06:37.19\00:06:39.69 to heed Jesus' warnings. Yeah. 00:06:39.69\00:06:42.00 You know, about sign chasing 00:06:42.00\00:06:43.70 you know in Matthew Chapter 24, 00:06:43.70\00:06:45.43 Jesus says see that you are not troubled about these things. 00:06:45.43\00:06:49.97 Although it's so easy to get troubled about those things 00:06:49.97\00:06:52.74 and we can live in that kind of fear factor. 00:06:52.74\00:06:56.34 You know, they see the things 00:06:56.34\00:06:57.75 and they can stresssed out 00:06:57.75\00:06:59.18 they can worry us and it's not hard to do 00:06:59.18\00:07:02.92 specially again in this day and age with the economy 00:07:02.92\00:07:05.29 and things going on internationally 00:07:05.29\00:07:06.82 all kinds of things. 00:07:06.82\00:07:08.09 And we see the earthquakes and so forth 00:07:08.09\00:07:10.46 and we can get stressed out. 00:07:10.46\00:07:12.16 We can get worried, but we need to remember 00:07:12.16\00:07:13.53 what Jesus said, see that you're not troubled. 00:07:13.53\00:07:16.16 And this can happen. 00:07:16.16\00:07:17.53 You know, for Christians that have been mature 00:07:17.53\00:07:20.04 and growing and walking with Jesus in longtime. 00:07:20.04\00:07:21.74 We can slip into this temptation. 00:07:21.74\00:07:23.37 It's so easy, it's so easy to get our eyes off Jesus 00:07:23.37\00:07:26.74 and look at the signs or all those things 00:07:26.74\00:07:28.28 that are happening around us. 00:07:28.28\00:07:29.51 And yet Jesus keeps saying no, no, no you know, focus on me. 00:07:29.51\00:07:31.88 Well, studying the Bible is hard work. 00:07:31.88\00:07:33.65 Studying texts like this is hard work 00:07:33.65\00:07:35.88 and it's easier just to chase robots 00:07:35.88\00:07:39.89 and signs and things like that. 00:07:39.89\00:07:41.59 Yeah, it is. It's so easy to move into that 00:07:41.59\00:07:44.66 and that seems to be what they were doing 00:07:44.66\00:07:46.06 here in Thessalonians. 00:07:46.06\00:07:47.10 They are doing little sign chasing. 00:07:47.10\00:07:48.63 They were happy about it. 00:07:48.63\00:07:49.73 They didn't need Paul to disturb their little disruption. 00:07:49.73\00:07:52.03 They didn't know they need Paul to come in. 00:07:52.03\00:07:54.04 But thank God the spirit was working 00:07:54.04\00:07:56.07 through Paul to say, hey, we need to work with this. 00:07:56.07\00:07:59.01 Yeah. Let's move on to verses 3 through 4 00:07:59.01\00:08:02.48 in our study and Paul continues and he says this, 00:08:02.48\00:08:07.08 "Do not let anyone deceive you in any way, 00:08:07.08\00:08:10.29 because that Day will not come, 00:08:10.29\00:08:12.12 except the apostasy come first, 00:08:12.12\00:08:15.06 even the revelation of the man of lawlessness, 00:08:15.06\00:08:17.83 the son of destruction, who opposes or exalts himself 00:08:17.83\00:08:21.16 over everything that is called God 00:08:21.16\00:08:23.67 or is an object of worship, 00:08:23.67\00:08:25.57 so as to sit in the temple of God as God, 00:08:25.57\00:08:28.37 proclaiming himself to be God. 00:08:28.37\00:08:31.21 Wow! So Paul is just saying look, 00:08:31.21\00:08:34.04 what you guys think has happened. 00:08:34.04\00:08:36.11 Can't possibly have happened 00:08:36.11\00:08:37.85 because there are so many other things 00:08:37.85\00:08:39.71 that have to happen before Jesus comes. 00:08:39.71\00:08:41.82 So you've jumped the gun in a sense here. 00:08:41.82\00:08:45.15 You know, hold off, relax just a little bit there. 00:08:45.15\00:08:47.72 There are things that have to happen 00:08:47.72\00:08:50.09 and it's interesting as we look at these two letters, 00:08:50.09\00:08:52.86 Paul is struggling to bring them to a balance. 00:08:52.86\00:08:56.46 Christians need to have a balance on the one hand, 00:08:56.46\00:08:59.43 anticipating the soon coming of Jesus. 00:08:59.43\00:09:02.14 You don't want to come to the place 00:09:02.14\00:09:03.87 where you're put in far, far off. 00:09:03.87\00:09:05.71 You wanna constantly have fresh, 00:09:05.71\00:09:07.54 Jesus is coming soon, at the same time, 00:09:07.54\00:09:11.21 you need to occupy till He comes. 00:09:11.21\00:09:13.72 You need to prepare your plan 00:09:13.72\00:09:15.58 for your children and your grandchildren. 00:09:15.58\00:09:17.39 You're to worry about retirement, life insurance. 00:09:17.39\00:09:20.32 Keeping those two intentions doesn't always, 00:09:20.32\00:09:24.39 it's not easy to do and Paul is wrestling to do that 00:09:24.39\00:09:27.40 on the one hand, excited about Jesus soon coming, 00:09:27.40\00:09:30.53 yet planning as if He might not come just right away. 00:09:30.53\00:09:35.97 Now here's another one of these 00:09:35.97\00:09:37.81 incomplete sentences of Paul 00:09:37.81\00:09:39.91 and in my translation the term 00:09:39.91\00:09:42.28 that day will not come, isn't there? 00:09:42.28\00:09:45.38 It's not there at all but your have to say it 00:09:45.38\00:09:48.08 because there's no verb, no noun, no nothing 00:09:48.08\00:09:50.89 I mean, he just starts off in the middle of the sentence 00:09:50.89\00:09:53.42 and says, except the apostasy comes first, 00:09:53.42\00:09:55.99 even the revelation of the man of lawlessness, 00:09:55.99\00:09:57.96 the son of destruction, 00:09:57.96\00:09:59.09 or who opposes or in the Greek it's not a sentence. 00:09:59.09\00:10:02.86 So you have to supply a sentence 00:10:02.86\00:10:06.07 in order to make sense of it, which is why translations 00:10:06.07\00:10:09.27 and translators had struggled with this forever. Yeah. 00:10:09.27\00:10:12.37 So he is saying okay, the day of the Lord has not come 00:10:12.37\00:10:16.51 because before it comes first there's gonna be 00:10:16.51\00:10:19.48 the apostasy is the language of the Greek. 00:10:19.48\00:10:22.72 In other words, a falling away in the church, 00:10:22.72\00:10:26.45 the apostasy will come, 00:10:26.45\00:10:28.16 the man of sin or some translations have it, 00:10:28.16\00:10:31.19 man of lawlessness and the reason for that is in the Greek 00:10:31.19\00:10:34.83 the two words are almost the same. 00:10:34.83\00:10:37.07 A sin is hamartia and lawlessness is anomia. 00:10:37.07\00:10:42.34 You see, the two sound about the same. 00:10:42.34\00:10:44.77 So when scribes were copying the Bible 00:10:44.77\00:10:46.98 that may have heard the one written the other, 00:10:46.98\00:10:48.98 is what seems to have happened. 00:10:48.98\00:10:50.21 So the man of sin and man of lawlessness is the same person. 00:10:50.21\00:10:53.65 It's not, not something different. 00:10:53.65\00:10:56.02 I wanna make that very clear. 00:10:56.02\00:10:59.82 What he's basically saying is the big challenge ahead 00:10:59.82\00:11:04.69 is that the biggest opposition to the gospel 00:11:04.69\00:11:07.23 is not going to be the Roman Empire. 00:11:07.23\00:11:09.20 It's gonna have a Christian face 00:11:09.20\00:11:11.60 and that is tragic, that is shocking. 00:11:11.60\00:11:15.40 He's saying, look until the apostasy comes, 00:11:15.40\00:11:18.51 until the greatest opposition to true faith 00:11:18.51\00:11:21.31 comes from inside the house. 00:11:21.31\00:11:24.35 Jesus hasn't come yet. Okay. 00:11:24.35\00:11:26.05 It's a point that he's making. 00:11:26.05\00:11:27.38 Who is this man of sin, who is this opposer? 00:11:27.38\00:11:31.72 The language in verse four offers two options. 00:11:31.72\00:11:36.26 When you go back to the Old Testament 00:11:36.26\00:11:37.86 and other parts of the Bible the language in verse four 00:11:37.86\00:11:41.16 can be applied to two different things 00:11:41.16\00:11:42.96 one can be applied to Satan. 00:11:42.96\00:11:45.23 He is a sense, the one who opposes, 00:11:45.23\00:11:48.90 and by the way, it's all present tenses is here. 00:11:48.90\00:11:50.77 So whatever this says, it's already present in Paul's day. 00:11:50.77\00:11:53.88 Yes, it's Paul day. 00:11:53.88\00:11:55.01 You see, he is one who opposes 00:11:55.01\00:11:57.08 and that would be Satan. 00:11:57.08\00:11:58.48 Temple of God would be the church. 00:11:58.48\00:12:01.05 You see, so the one who opposes calls 00:12:01.05\00:12:04.25 or an objective worship that seems to point to Satan, 00:12:04.25\00:12:07.49 but it also points to the little horn of Daniel 7 and Daniel 8 00:12:07.49\00:12:12.59 and that is not Satan but is an agent of Satan, 00:12:12.59\00:12:15.46 an earthly agent, a power on this Earth, 00:12:15.46\00:12:19.13 that serves Satan's goals. 00:12:19.13\00:12:21.37 So there's a tension here between Satan 00:12:21.37\00:12:25.11 and an agent of Satan as to who this man of sin, 00:12:25.11\00:12:28.74 man of lawlessness really is. Yeah. 00:12:28.74\00:12:30.98 Well, I should appreciate what Paul has written 00:12:30.98\00:12:33.75 but I wish we knew Paul was leaving out, 00:12:33.75\00:12:35.72 that would just make everything a lot more easier. 00:12:36.75\00:12:39.19 It has to be the John it gets worse. 00:12:39.19\00:12:40.96 Read verses five to seven. 00:12:40.96\00:12:42.59 All right. Here we go. Here we go. 00:12:42.59\00:12:44.96 "Do you remember that when I was with you 00:12:45.79\00:12:48.13 I told you these things. 00:12:48.13\00:12:49.90 And now you know what is restraining him, 00:12:49.90\00:12:52.57 in order that he might be revealed in his own time, 00:12:52.57\00:12:55.00 for the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, 00:12:55.00\00:12:58.51 only he who now restrains will continue 00:12:58.51\00:13:02.08 until he is out of the way." 00:13:02.08\00:13:04.61 Wow, it seems like Paul is kind of outlining 00:13:04.61\00:13:06.88 three stages of history if you will, 00:13:06.88\00:13:09.82 the time of mystery and restraint that he mentions, 00:13:09.82\00:13:12.99 a revelation of a man of sin and then the second coming. 00:13:12.99\00:13:17.56 That's right, so there are several things 00:13:17.56\00:13:19.49 that have to happen before Jesus can return and folks, 00:13:19.49\00:13:24.50 I want you to put your thinking caps on. 00:13:24.50\00:13:26.74 Get your Bible in front of you. 00:13:26.74\00:13:28.94 In 14 minutes, we're gonna talk some other difficult, 00:13:28.94\00:13:32.07 most difficult passage in all the Bible 00:13:32.07\00:13:35.71 and we're gonna bring in a lot of informations. 00:13:35.71\00:13:37.98 We're gonna by quick you may want to run this program 00:13:37.98\00:13:41.22 by at a future time. See it again. 00:13:41.22\00:13:43.59 But for now, let's take a quick break. 00:13:43.59\00:13:45.35
