Welcome back to Books of the Book, 00:00:01.43\00:00:02.86 where we begin our study of 2 Thessalonians. 00:00:02.86\00:00:05.77 We are in Chapter 1 and I'm going to pick it up 00:00:05.77\00:00:08.34 now John from versus 5 and 6. 00:00:08.34\00:00:10.64 "In all your persecutions 00:00:12.01\00:00:13.98 and in the afflictions you are enduring. 00:00:13.98\00:00:16.21 The evidence of the righteous judgment of God, 00:00:16.21\00:00:18.95 so that you might be counted worthy 00:00:18.95\00:00:20.62 of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering, 00:00:20.62\00:00:23.69 since it is indeed just God's mind 00:00:23.69\00:00:26.09 to repay with affliction those who are afflicting you." 00:00:26.09\00:00:29.69 One thing I should mention right after 00:00:29.69\00:00:32.23 that here is that verses 5 to 10 have 00:00:32.23\00:00:35.46 a strong Old Testament feel about them. 00:00:35.46\00:00:38.63 So a lot of language that echoes 00:00:38.63\00:00:41.80 all kinds of places back, it's like you are in a cave 00:00:41.80\00:00:43.57 and there are echoes everywhere. 00:00:43.57\00:00:46.88 And what striking about this is 1 Thessalonians 00:00:46.88\00:00:51.08 is notable as the book of the New Testament 00:00:51.08\00:00:54.08 that almost seems to say nothing about the Old Testament. 00:00:54.08\00:00:57.12 Very, very little. 00:00:57.12\00:00:58.55 The strongest ones probably the one 00:00:58.55\00:01:00.09 you mentioned a few programs ago 00:01:00.09\00:01:02.36 where about coming with His saints 00:01:02.36\00:01:04.73 seems to echoes Zechariah 14 but very, very little 00:01:04.73\00:01:08.06 Old Testament in 1 Thessalonians. 00:01:08.06\00:01:09.76 In 2 Thessalonians Old Testament is everywhere 00:01:09.76\00:01:12.60 and particularly in the passage that we have here. 00:01:12.60\00:01:16.67 Probably viewers will have noticed 00:01:16.67\00:01:19.74 that Pastor Jon added a piece of verse 4 00:01:19.74\00:01:23.31 into the reading of verses 5 and 6. 00:01:23.31\00:01:25.35 'Cause we mentioned earlier it's all one sentence 00:01:25.35\00:01:28.45 and so verses 5 and 6 by themselves 00:01:28.45\00:01:30.99 don't flow as a sentence unless 00:01:30.99\00:01:33.22 you see them in the larger context. 00:01:33.22\00:01:35.56 So basically verse 5 starts out 00:01:35.56\00:01:38.09 "the evidence of the righteous judgment of God." 00:01:38.09\00:01:41.53 What does that mean? 00:01:41.53\00:01:42.56 Just sort of out on an island by itself. 00:01:42.56\00:01:45.03 It's pointing back. Okay. 00:01:45.03\00:01:47.07 What is the evidence of God's righteous judgment? 00:01:47.07\00:01:50.71 It's the persecutions and the afflictions 00:01:50.71\00:01:53.81 the Thessalonians are enduring. 00:01:53.81\00:01:56.68 Now that's troubling. Yeah. 00:01:56.68\00:01:58.41 What does that mean? 00:01:58.41\00:01:59.55 Evidence of the righteous judgment of God. 00:01:59.55\00:02:03.69 How is it-- how is their persecution 00:02:03.69\00:02:06.05 evidence of God's judgment? 00:02:06.05\00:02:07.69 I mean he is not saying that God is judging them. 00:02:07.69\00:02:10.36 No, it is this. 00:02:10.36\00:02:11.36 The fact that they are being persecuted 00:02:13.03\00:02:15.80 and that they're joyful in that persecution 00:02:15.80\00:02:18.87 anticipates the final judgment. 00:02:18.87\00:02:21.10 Because you see in the immediate situation 00:02:21.10\00:02:23.37 the persecutors are thinking we are right, 00:02:23.37\00:02:25.97 they are wrong, that's why we're persecuting them. 00:02:25.97\00:02:28.78 So everything that you see in that immediate situation 00:02:28.78\00:02:32.25 suggests the opposite of reality. 00:02:32.25\00:02:34.65 The reality will only be seen 00:02:34.65\00:02:36.92 in the righteous judgment of God at the end. 00:02:36.92\00:02:39.49 There it will be proven the Thessalonians were right. 00:02:39.49\00:02:42.12 Their persecutors were wrong. 00:02:42.12\00:02:44.43 So the fact that they're not being persecuted 00:02:44.43\00:02:47.46 as bad people but they are people who are joyful 00:02:47.46\00:02:50.43 and peaceful and they are being persecuted anyway, 00:02:50.43\00:02:53.13 the very character in the middle of the persecution 00:02:53.13\00:02:56.64 is evidence that God is righteous 00:02:56.64\00:02:59.57 when He judges their persecutors. 00:02:59.57\00:03:01.94 They have--the persecutors have upset 00:03:01.94\00:03:05.38 the order of the universe and while judgment 00:03:05.38\00:03:07.55 doesn't come now it will come eventually. 00:03:07.55\00:03:11.49 God's people will be vindicated 00:03:11.49\00:03:14.42 injustice will not last forever. 00:03:14.42\00:03:17.89 The future judgment will demonstrate 00:03:17.89\00:03:21.76 that God is approving them in the present 00:03:21.76\00:03:25.63 and it validates God has chosen them. 00:03:25.63\00:03:27.84 As we saw so all these things are happening. 00:03:27.84\00:03:29.54 It's a, it's a tough passage 00:03:29.54\00:03:31.37 but Paul is trying to bring out the idea 00:03:31.37\00:03:34.31 that your present experience should draw in 00:03:34.31\00:03:38.08 from the future judgment encouragement. 00:03:38.08\00:03:40.38 And in fact that's what they're joyful in suffering 00:03:40.38\00:03:43.52 and that's why Paul is so impressed with them. 00:03:43.52\00:03:45.45 Somehow more than any other church 00:03:45.45\00:03:48.16 either their persecution was worst than anybody else 00:03:48.16\00:03:51.46 or the way they responded to it was so much better 00:03:51.46\00:03:55.06 and Paul just says these guys are special. 00:03:55.06\00:03:57.10 You know it really can give us some comfort. 00:03:59.03\00:04:01.70 You know God will set things right 00:04:01.70\00:04:04.74 and that can really-- should really inform 00:04:04.74\00:04:07.88 and motivate us in our behavior today on trusting God. 00:04:07.88\00:04:11.28 Just resting and having patience with Him in that. 00:04:11.28\00:04:13.92 I think of the verse, you know, where God says 00:04:13.92\00:04:15.75 "vengeance is mine saith the Lord." 00:04:15.75\00:04:17.55 It's not for me to take vengeance on my situation 00:04:17.55\00:04:20.32 or whatever might be happening to me 00:04:20.32\00:04:21.96 but to trust that God is going to set things right. 00:04:21.96\00:04:25.36 You know that's why I love about what Jesus said too 00:04:25.36\00:04:26.90 when He gave that famous sermon on the mount. 00:04:26.90\00:04:29.03 You know the beatitudes. 00:04:29.03\00:04:30.63 God is here and He is beginning to set things right. 00:04:30.63\00:04:33.80 So if you are this or you are that 00:04:33.80\00:04:35.44 or this is what's happening don't worry God has come 00:04:35.44\00:04:37.91 and He is setting things right. 00:04:37.91\00:04:39.27 Things are in motion and they're moving forward 00:04:39.27\00:04:42.18 and despite your situation you can rejoice because 00:04:42.18\00:04:45.31 that--because that is coming. 00:04:45.31\00:04:46.92 Injustice will not last forever. 00:04:46.92\00:04:49.62 So be patient on your own. 00:04:49.62\00:04:51.15 And it's so tempting to retaliate sometimes 00:04:51.15\00:04:54.66 and I've been encouraged by a text that I wanna share. 00:04:54.66\00:04:58.26 It's in James Chapter 2 and verse 13 00:04:58.26\00:05:02.26 and I've chosen the English Standard Version for this. 00:05:02.26\00:05:06.07 It says, "for judgment is without mercy 00:05:06.07\00:05:09.44 to one who has shown no mercy. 00:05:09.44\00:05:13.58 Mercy triumphs over judgment." 00:05:13.58\00:05:17.05 What this text is saying is that in a sense 00:05:17.05\00:05:21.22 the standard of judgment at the end 00:05:21.22\00:05:24.35 will be the kind of standard that I held up to other people. 00:05:24.35\00:05:27.96 If I'm merciful to others, I'm saying 00:05:27.96\00:05:30.63 that's the way to judge people who are struggling, 00:05:30.63\00:05:33.40 that's the way to judge people who have done wrong. 00:05:33.40\00:05:36.00 You see when I'm critical and faultfinding 00:05:36.00\00:05:38.63 and overbearing then God said, oh, 00:05:38.63\00:05:41.24 that's the standard you think you wanna be judged by. 00:05:41.24\00:05:43.57 You see that. 00:05:43.57\00:05:44.57 I almost see God smiling in the statement. 00:05:44.57\00:05:47.84 But it has really encouraged me to say, 00:05:47.84\00:05:50.91 hey, if I to some degree set the pattern of my own judgment, 00:05:50.91\00:05:54.78 how should I treat other people? 00:05:54.78\00:05:56.42 They'll say, I wanna be merciful. 00:05:56.42\00:05:58.59 I wanna be kind. I wanna be gentle. 00:05:58.59\00:06:00.96 Forgiving even in the worst of situation. 00:06:00.96\00:06:04.76 As Paul said in previous letter, 00:06:04.76\00:06:07.23 don't repay evil for evil. 00:06:07.23\00:06:09.40 Yeah, yeah. So. 00:06:09.40\00:06:11.60 Well, shall we move on? Yes. 00:06:11.60\00:06:13.27 Let's move on to verses 7 through 9 00:06:13.27\00:06:15.74 here in 2 Thessalonians Chapter 1. 00:06:15.74\00:06:17.54 And Paul says this, "Repay with affliction 00:06:19.01\00:06:21.51 those who are afflicting you and rest to you 00:06:21.51\00:06:24.45 who are afflicted along with us, 00:06:24.45\00:06:26.15 at the revelation of the Lord Jesus 00:06:26.15\00:06:27.92 from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, 00:06:27.92\00:06:31.15 directing vengeance toward those who don't know God, 00:06:31.15\00:06:33.96 and who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, 00:06:33.96\00:06:36.99 who pay the penalty of eternal destruction, 00:06:36.99\00:06:39.79 away from the face of the Lord 00:06:39.79\00:06:41.50 and from the glory of His power." 00:06:41.50\00:06:43.63 Wow, Jon. Yeah. 00:06:43.63\00:06:45.60 This is a passage some people get nervous on. 00:06:45.60\00:06:48.40 This is idea of God who pays back. 00:06:48.40\00:06:51.31 You know say how does that fit in 00:06:51.31\00:06:53.27 with the God of love and so forth. 00:06:53.27\00:06:55.44 And I think basically this, any good government 00:06:55.44\00:06:59.08 has as a major task restraining evil. 00:06:59.08\00:07:03.12 It has to be, I mean if wasn't for police cars 00:07:03.12\00:07:06.39 who would obey the speed limit, right? 00:07:06.39\00:07:07.99 I mean even among godly people 00:07:07.99\00:07:10.03 there's a temptation to just hit that thing 00:07:10.03\00:07:12.29 just a little bit harder and there is a restrain-- 00:07:12.29\00:07:15.36 the greater the evil the greater the restraint necessary. 00:07:15.36\00:07:19.93 Sometimes smart bombs. 00:07:19.93\00:07:21.77 Sometimes predator drones, you see. 00:07:21.77\00:07:24.57 Government's role is to restrain evil 00:07:24.57\00:07:27.48 in the universe and God is like that. 00:07:27.48\00:07:29.81 I remember one time I was driving in state of New York 00:07:29.81\00:07:34.58 and I had a lady in the back that was 00:07:34.58\00:07:37.62 telling me her husband just left her 00:07:37.62\00:07:40.09 and I was just so-- I'm listening to-- 00:07:40.09\00:07:42.22 this was 35 mile zone I headed over 50. 00:07:42.22\00:07:44.53 I was just listening-- Oh, no. 00:07:44.53\00:07:47.50 Little red light, you see. Right. 00:07:47.50\00:07:49.10 And I was pulled into the judge. 00:07:49.10\00:07:50.77 It was a really small New York state town. 00:07:50.77\00:07:53.70 This little judge, you know, he hands me the seat 00:07:53.70\00:07:56.27 and says the state of New York against Jon Paulien. 00:07:56.27\00:07:59.67 And I'm thinking 20 million people and they all hate me. 00:07:59.67\00:08:03.08 This is terrible, you see, but that was kind of 00:08:03.08\00:08:05.35 what the wrath of God is about its restraining, 00:08:05.35\00:08:09.35 you know, I didn't intend to do it but, boy, 00:08:09.35\00:08:11.89 I was sure restrained on my future actions in that town. 00:08:11.89\00:08:14.66 You know that judge who was a young guy. 00:08:14.66\00:08:16.73 This is your pastor, he says, I don't expect that 00:08:16.73\00:08:19.03 I'm gonna be seeing you again. 00:08:19.03\00:08:20.40 I'm just gonna let you go. 00:08:20.40\00:08:21.66 And his mercy was also a powerful restraint 00:08:21.66\00:08:25.73 on my behavior in that situation. 00:08:25.73\00:08:28.24 So I think we have to see, yes, God will bring 00:08:28.24\00:08:32.37 an end to violence and oppression 00:08:32.37\00:08:34.78 and that will be a good thing. 00:08:34.78\00:08:36.41 God of mercy isn't gonna let injustice go on forever. 00:08:36.41\00:08:41.48 Ultimately when He shows His presence those who 00:08:41.48\00:08:45.15 have chosen evil will not be able to stand it. 00:08:45.15\00:08:48.82 Yeah, yeah, well, I think we take great courage 00:08:48.82\00:08:52.93 that we don't need to take justice into our own hands. 00:08:52.93\00:08:55.20 You know that Gods not on trial 00:08:55.20\00:08:57.40 with these words on the Bible. 00:08:57.40\00:08:59.37 And you know I love how you brought out that, 00:08:59.37\00:09:03.24 you know, God has to deal with the evil in the world 00:09:03.24\00:09:07.51 and that He will take the situation into His hands 00:09:07.51\00:09:12.01 and we can know and trust our loving Father, 00:09:12.01\00:09:15.28 our loving God to deal with the evil 00:09:15.28\00:09:17.75 and He is making things right. 00:09:17.75\00:09:20.12 Well, we probably should move on to 00:09:20.12\00:09:22.49 2 Thessalonians Chapter 1 versus 10 through 12. 00:09:22.49\00:09:26.16 And Paul continues and he says, 00:09:26.16\00:09:27.50 "On that day when He comes 00:09:27.50\00:09:28.80 to be glorified in all His saints, 00:09:28.80\00:09:31.50 and to be marveled at in all who believe 00:09:31.50\00:09:33.87 because our witness was believed by you. 00:09:33.87\00:09:36.17 With this end in view we pray always for you, 00:09:36.17\00:09:39.04 in order that our God might account you 00:09:39.04\00:09:40.94 worthy of His calling, and He might fill up 00:09:40.94\00:09:43.45 your every intention of goodness 00:09:43.45\00:09:45.65 and work of faith with power, 00:09:45.65\00:09:47.55 so that the name of our Lord Jesus 00:09:47.55\00:09:49.25 might be glorified in you all, 00:09:49.25\00:09:51.19 and you in Him, according to the grace of our God 00:09:51.19\00:09:54.06 and the Lord Jesus Christ." 00:09:54.06\00:09:56.12 I love that part in verse 11 00:09:56.12\00:09:58.33 "that He might fill up your every intention of goodness 00:09:58.33\00:10:01.60 and work of faith with power." 00:10:01.60\00:10:04.43 Our good intentions He will fill it up. 00:10:04.43\00:10:06.37 He will work with this. 00:10:06.37\00:10:08.00 In verses 3-10, we have important details 00:10:08.00\00:10:11.31 about the Second Coming. 00:10:11.31\00:10:12.47 There's angels, there's fire, there's destruction 00:10:12.47\00:10:16.24 and He is setting the table for Chapter 2. 00:10:16.24\00:10:18.55 'Cause in Chapter 2 there apparently 00:10:18.55\00:10:20.52 people are saying He's already come. 00:10:20.52\00:10:22.52 He's already come. Quit your job. 00:10:22.52\00:10:24.72 You know, chill out so this is-- 00:10:24.72\00:10:27.22 eternity is here and Paul is saying look 00:10:27.22\00:10:30.29 if Jesus had come where is the fire, 00:10:30.29\00:10:33.56 where is the angels, where is the destruction, you see. 00:10:33.56\00:10:36.23 He is piling up evidence that their theology is mistaken 00:10:36.23\00:10:40.37 and it's causing them to behaviors 00:10:40.37\00:10:43.17 that are not worthy of the people of God. 00:10:43.17\00:10:45.97 So he's setting the stage here for where is about to go. 00:10:45.97\00:10:49.41 Yeah, you know, I love-- we talked about 00:10:49.41\00:10:51.28 this before in Chapter 4 but just that great picture 00:10:51.28\00:10:55.42 when Christ comes back again you know. 00:10:55.42\00:10:57.72 And I wanna encourage you as viewers I mentioned before 00:10:57.72\00:11:00.36 that you can take 1 Corinthians Chapter 15, 00:11:00.36\00:11:02.62 1 Thessalonians Chapter 4, and Revelation Chapter 20 00:11:02.62\00:11:05.69 and you can see the whole picture. 00:11:05.69\00:11:07.66 You know that wonderful picture 00:11:07.66\00:11:09.33 when Christ comes back again and the dead in Christ rise 00:11:09.33\00:11:12.53 and those who are alive in Christ rise with Him 00:11:12.53\00:11:14.77 and then Satan and his demons are bound for a 1,000 years 00:11:14.77\00:11:19.74 and Christ and His people reign for a 1,000 years 00:11:19.74\00:11:22.24 and they see that all of God's judgments 00:11:22.24\00:11:23.91 of making things right were actually just and good. 00:11:23.91\00:11:27.98 And then when Christ and His people come back 00:11:27.98\00:11:30.35 and that wily devil the serpent is let loose 00:11:30.35\00:11:33.89 again then God and His people come down 00:11:33.89\00:11:36.69 and cleanse the earth for that new earth 00:11:36.69\00:11:38.63 that we're gonna have and God will ultimately 00:11:38.63\00:11:40.83 make everything right. 00:11:40.83\00:11:42.63 And verses 10 to 12 I think He makes 00:11:42.63\00:11:44.83 clear that character is critical moving forward. 00:11:44.83\00:11:48.37 It is our character that to some degree is a window on to 00:11:48.37\00:11:52.41 God's character in the eyes of people. 00:11:52.41\00:11:54.88 We glorify God at the Second Coming 00:11:54.88\00:11:57.78 by exhibiting His character that's what Paul says here. 00:11:57.78\00:12:02.22 Yeah, definitely. 00:12:02.22\00:12:03.49 Well, God, Paul uses God and Jesus interchangeably here 00:12:05.39\00:12:09.46 and if Jesus is truly God then the Father is just like Him. 00:12:09.46\00:12:14.00 So in looking at Jesus we can really know 00:12:14.00\00:12:15.93 what our Father is like. 00:12:15.93\00:12:18.43 Let me sum up what we've been 00:12:18.43\00:12:20.24 doing in this program with a quick story. 00:12:20.24\00:12:22.54 There was a Seventh-day Adventist farmer. 00:12:22.54\00:12:24.84 There are a bunch of locust coming 00:12:24.84\00:12:26.98 and all his neighbors said the locust are coming. 00:12:26.98\00:12:29.91 They're gonna eat up the crops. 00:12:29.91\00:12:31.08 Let's get them all in. 00:12:31.08\00:12:32.25 The problem is the locust was supposed arrive on Sabbath. 00:12:32.25\00:12:35.62 This Adventist farmer says, no. 00:12:35.62\00:12:37.62 He says I'm not gonna work on the Sabbath 00:12:37.62\00:12:39.75 and let God take care of things. 00:12:39.75\00:12:41.62 The other farmers all work throughout that day 00:12:41.62\00:12:44.19 and throughout the night and so on. 00:12:44.19\00:12:46.86 Sunday morning came the Adventist farmer 00:12:46.86\00:12:49.46 looked out of the window, the field was totally barren. 00:12:49.46\00:12:52.47 When the neighbors say they were sorry for this. 00:12:52.47\00:12:54.17 Man, what you're gonna do now. 00:12:54.17\00:12:55.50 He says God doesn't always make 00:12:55.50\00:12:57.91 a final settlement in October. 00:12:57.91\00:13:01.18 Patience I think is a major message of this chapter. 00:13:01.18\00:13:04.15 Yeah, he really had a vision of God what wanted. 00:13:04.15\00:13:07.45 We just wanna encourage you to know that 00:13:07.45\00:13:09.48 no matter what you might be going through, 00:13:09.48\00:13:11.49 to know that God is about making things right. 00:13:11.49\00:13:14.06 It's in process and ultimately 00:13:14.06\00:13:15.99 when He comes back again evil will finally be done away with 00:13:15.99\00:13:19.79 and we'll reign with Him forever. 00:13:19.79\00:13:21.36 God bless. We'll see you next time. 00:13:21.36\00:13:22.86
