Welcome to Books of the Book. 00:00:21.58\00:00:23.79 I am Jon Paulien, Loma Linda University 00:00:23.79\00:00:26.96 and with me is my Pastor Jon Ciccarelli 00:00:26.96\00:00:29.66 of the Calimesa Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:00:29.66\00:00:32.99 We've been talking about 1 Thessalonians 00:00:32.99\00:00:35.36 up until now in the series 00:00:35.36\00:00:36.97 and we're moving from 1 to 2 Thessalonians. 00:00:36.97\00:00:41.37 There's an important difference 00:00:41.37\00:00:42.87 between these two letters. 00:00:42.87\00:00:44.77 It seems that in 1 Thessalonians 00:00:44.77\00:00:47.98 the people were really worried about 00:00:47.98\00:00:49.51 the delay of the advent of Jesus. 00:00:49.51\00:00:52.08 The delay of the Second Coming 00:00:52.08\00:00:53.68 and they were stressed about what would happen 00:00:53.68\00:00:56.55 to those who had died in the meantime. 00:00:56.55\00:00:58.99 In the second letter, they seemed 00:00:58.99\00:01:01.69 to have completely switched. 00:01:01.69\00:01:03.49 Now the Second Coming is right on top on them, 00:01:03.49\00:01:05.93 it may already have arrived. 00:01:05.93\00:01:07.96 And Paul getting this message is trying to deal with 00:01:07.96\00:01:12.77 a new situation here in 2 Thessalonians. 00:01:12.77\00:01:16.27 Good to be with you again, Jon, and we are starting 00:01:16.27\00:01:18.57 the 2 Second Thessalonians as you mentioned 00:01:18.57\00:01:19.97 and we're gonna look specifically at verses 00:01:19.97\00:01:21.81 1 through 12 in Chapter 1. 00:01:21.81\00:01:24.11 And Paul is rejoicing because they've been 00:01:24.11\00:01:27.35 faithful in spite of their afflictions 00:01:27.35\00:01:29.98 but he talks about God coming again 00:01:29.98\00:01:32.99 and he gives them some instruction 00:01:32.99\00:01:35.26 and he encourages them to be patient in this process. 00:01:35.26\00:01:38.16 So let's dig into the study today. 00:01:38.16\00:01:40.13 I think this chapter is one of the clearest text 00:01:40.13\00:01:43.47 about what the Second Coming of Jesus is gonna be like. 00:01:43.47\00:01:48.10 Communication was more difficult back then. 00:01:48.10\00:01:50.77 Today we have emails and we have social networks 00:01:50.77\00:01:54.91 and we have telephones and cell phones 00:01:54.91\00:01:57.01 and communication is so simple. 00:01:57.01\00:01:59.45 But back then you would have to write a letter 00:01:59.45\00:02:03.62 and then the people would hear 00:02:03.62\00:02:05.55 that letter and they process it 00:02:05.55\00:02:07.29 and then they write a letter and send it back. 00:02:07.29\00:02:09.86 And usually transportation will take at least 00:02:09.86\00:02:13.46 two weeks each way, sometimes quite a bit longer. 00:02:13.46\00:02:17.67 So it must have been two months or so 00:02:17.67\00:02:21.07 at least between 1 Thessalonians and 2. 00:02:21.07\00:02:24.21 A lot can happen in two months. 00:02:24.21\00:02:27.31 And apparently they received 1 Thessalonians 00:02:27.31\00:02:31.88 and Paul saying look, You know 00:02:31.88\00:02:34.62 don't be so stressed about the delay of the advent. 00:02:34.62\00:02:37.52 Says we will join them when Jesus comes 00:02:37.52\00:02:41.12 and they took courage from that and said, wow, 00:02:41.12\00:02:43.66 that means the Second Coming is actually right at hand. 00:02:43.66\00:02:47.00 And they got overly excited and some of them 00:02:47.00\00:02:49.16 quit their jobs so Paul is trying to correct 00:02:49.16\00:02:52.93 misunderstandings I think of what he wrote 00:02:52.93\00:02:55.94 the first time and perhaps some other 00:02:55.94\00:02:58.64 bits of dissidents were coming in. 00:02:58.64\00:03:01.78 Anyway why don't we get started with the text? 00:03:01.78\00:03:03.71 We can begin with the first two verses of 2 Thessalonians. 00:03:03.71\00:03:07.38 Paul writes, "Paul and Silvanus and Timothy 00:03:08.65\00:03:11.75 to the church of the Thessalonians in God 00:03:11.75\00:03:13.79 our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:03:13.79\00:03:16.69 Grace to you and peace from God our Father 00:03:16.69\00:03:18.96 and the Lord Jesus Christ." 00:03:18.96\00:03:21.66 Interesting. 00:03:21.66\00:03:23.00 This introduction sound so similar to 1 Thessalonians. 00:03:23.00\00:03:28.34 It's almost as if Paul had a macro 00:03:28.34\00:03:30.97 that maybe--that may deke me a bit but I remember 00:03:30.97\00:03:33.58 in the early stages of word processing on computers 00:03:33.58\00:03:36.41 you had macros where you could, 00:03:36.41\00:03:37.98 you could take an intro like that 00:03:37.98\00:03:39.58 and just hit one key and boom. 00:03:39.58\00:03:41.88 You know there it is in your document. 00:03:41.88\00:03:44.05 Paul definitely seems to have had 00:03:44.05\00:03:46.19 some habitual ways of saying certain things. 00:03:46.19\00:03:49.46 There's one difference between 00:03:49.46\00:03:52.03 the introduction of 2 Thessalonians and 1. 00:03:52.03\00:03:54.60 In 1 Thessalonians he speaks about God 00:03:54.60\00:03:57.40 the Father but here he talks about God our Father. 00:03:57.40\00:04:03.51 That triggers in my mind the Lord's prayer, doesn't it? 00:04:03.51\00:04:06.11 Yeah, yeah, you know I love, 00:04:06.11\00:04:08.41 Jesus came to show us the love of the Father. 00:04:08.41\00:04:11.58 You know and I think, I think sometimes 00:04:11.58\00:04:13.52 people have this view of God the Father, He is stern. 00:04:13.52\00:04:18.12 You know Jesus is the nice one. 00:04:18.12\00:04:19.22 You know Jesus is the one 00:04:19.22\00:04:20.36 that can save us almost from God himself. 00:04:20.36\00:04:23.29 And yet Jesus and when He taught us to pray, 00:04:23.29\00:04:26.19 the Lord's prayer, He says 00:04:26.19\00:04:27.50 we don't say the Father, we say, our Father, 00:04:27.50\00:04:30.33 which art in heaven, hollowed be your name. 00:04:30.33\00:04:32.53 You know Jesus was inviting us 00:04:32.53\00:04:33.97 into this relationship with the Father. 00:04:33.97\00:04:36.81 And Jesus, everything He did He says, 00:04:36.81\00:04:39.47 I don't, I don't say anything. 00:04:39.47\00:04:41.14 I don't hear the Father saying. 00:04:41.14\00:04:42.58 I don't do anything. 00:04:42.58\00:04:43.71 I don't see the Father doing, 00:04:43.71\00:04:44.75 so everything He said and did was of the Father. 00:04:44.75\00:04:48.22 So the love we see in Jesus 00:04:48.22\00:04:50.25 is this profound love of the Father for His beloved, 00:04:50.25\00:04:55.02 for His sons and daughters, for His creation. 00:04:55.02\00:04:57.66 And you know it's interesting because 00:04:57.66\00:05:00.36 sometimes I think that depending on your view of God, 00:05:00.36\00:05:05.17 you know your view of the Father, 00:05:05.17\00:05:06.43 your view of Jesus, your view of the Holy Spirit 00:05:06.43\00:05:08.67 it impacts how you really live your life. 00:05:08.67\00:05:11.54 I heard someone say once, you know if you have-- 00:05:11.54\00:05:13.94 if your focus is on God the Father 00:05:13.94\00:05:15.78 and you have the stern image of Him 00:05:15.78\00:05:17.71 that impacts how you live your life 00:05:17.71\00:05:19.68 and how you worship. 00:05:19.68\00:05:20.85 You might be very strict and scared. 00:05:20.85\00:05:23.75 A life of fear that you're gonna be 00:05:23.75\00:05:25.59 you know pounded by God and if you see Jesus 00:05:25.59\00:05:29.79 as the nice compassionate, forgiving, loving one, 00:05:29.79\00:05:32.43 you know then you might live that way more. 00:05:32.43\00:05:34.86 And then the Holy Spirit you might be 00:05:34.86\00:05:36.93 a little more easygoing, you know has that view. 00:05:36.93\00:05:39.57 But really they're all one and so Jesus came to 00:05:39.57\00:05:44.74 show us the love of the Father 00:05:44.74\00:05:46.11 and we can know that God truly is our loving Father. 00:05:46.11\00:05:50.05 Well, isn't that perhaps what frightens 00:05:50.05\00:05:52.55 people about religion today? 00:05:52.55\00:05:55.02 I think more and more we're seeing in the media 00:05:55.02\00:05:57.12 the idea of religion is the reason for terrorism 00:05:57.12\00:05:59.85 and a religion is the reason for 00:05:59.85\00:06:02.12 the problems we have in the world. 00:06:02.12\00:06:03.56 And if only we could you know get away from this-- 00:06:03.56\00:06:06.93 well, I think some of that, 00:06:06.93\00:06:09.33 you know maybe on point in the sense that 00:06:09.33\00:06:12.10 the view you have of God reflects who you are. 00:06:12.10\00:06:15.57 Interesting things, the cruelest people 00:06:15.57\00:06:18.21 in the ancient world Canaanites, the Assyrians, 00:06:18.21\00:06:23.18 the cruelest people in the ancient world 00:06:23.18\00:06:25.08 were really religious people. 00:06:25.08\00:06:28.22 So this point you're making is really important 00:06:28.22\00:06:30.39 that the kind of God you worship 00:06:30.39\00:06:34.39 is gonna have a powerful impact on who you are. 00:06:34.39\00:06:36.56 Religion does change lives. 00:06:36.56\00:06:39.29 Religion does affect who you are. 00:06:39.29\00:06:41.80 If you have a view of God who is stern and critical 00:06:41.80\00:06:44.97 and angry and constantly after people and so on 00:06:44.97\00:06:49.57 we tend to become like that. 00:06:49.57\00:06:52.47 And our characters are molded 00:06:52.47\00:06:56.24 by the kind of God that we worship. 00:06:56.24\00:06:58.98 I think this is a very, very critical issue. 00:06:58.98\00:07:01.08 Yeah, I think, you know sometimes 00:07:01.08\00:07:03.82 people will talk to me about religion and it's bad. 00:07:03.82\00:07:06.35 And I say, no, religion is a very good thing. 00:07:06.35\00:07:08.62 We're all religious about something. 00:07:08.62\00:07:10.76 About different things in our lives. 00:07:10.76\00:07:12.53 And Jesus was religious about 00:07:12.53\00:07:16.33 His relationship with the Father 00:07:16.33\00:07:18.03 and religious about sharing that love of the Father. 00:07:18.03\00:07:20.84 And you know it's love is estimated by 00:07:20.84\00:07:22.97 beholding we become changed. 00:07:22.97\00:07:25.21 You know by being religious about being with Jesus 00:07:25.21\00:07:29.11 and being with our Father we become changed. 00:07:29.11\00:07:32.05 And the more we experienced that love 00:07:32.05\00:07:34.52 the more it changes our hearts and people can see 00:07:34.52\00:07:37.39 that we've been religious about being with God 00:07:37.39\00:07:40.09 and religious about His love in the world. 00:07:40.09\00:07:41.89 And people will judge God by what they see 00:07:43.02\00:07:47.13 in the lives of those who claim to be following Him. 00:07:47.13\00:07:50.10 So when you claim to be following God 00:07:50.10\00:07:52.60 you're now on trial in a sense as to what God is like 00:07:52.60\00:07:57.47 and the kind of picture of God that they will take so. 00:07:57.47\00:08:01.14 These are very important for us to think about. 00:08:01.14\00:08:03.48 Moving on to verses 3 and 4 and let me remind our 00:08:03.48\00:08:06.88 viewing audience that the translations of 00:08:06.88\00:08:09.32 1 and 2 Thessalonians that we use in this program 00:08:09.32\00:08:12.35 are my own translations, not out of any disrespect 00:08:12.35\00:08:15.69 for other translations of the Bible 00:08:15.69\00:08:18.13 but in order to show sometimes 00:08:18.13\00:08:20.73 the subtle meanings of Greek words, 00:08:20.73\00:08:22.73 sometimes the grammar of the Greek 00:08:22.73\00:08:24.73 that makes for awkward English but enables us to see 00:08:24.73\00:08:28.40 how different parts of the text relate to each other. 00:08:28.40\00:08:31.97 Verses 3 and 4 of 2 Thessalonians 1, says 00:08:31.97\00:08:35.88 "we are obligated to give thanks to God 00:08:35.88\00:08:39.45 always for you, brothers, as is right, 00:08:39.45\00:08:43.52 because your faith is growing abundantly." 00:08:43.52\00:08:46.96 Paul says, super growing. 00:08:46.96\00:08:48.62 And Paul loves that word super. 00:08:48.62\00:08:50.69 "Your faith is growing abundantly, 00:08:50.69\00:08:52.73 and the love of every one of you 00:08:52.73\00:08:54.30 for each other is increasing, 00:08:54.30\00:08:56.30 so that we ourselves boast about you 00:08:56.30\00:08:59.17 among the churches of God because of your patience 00:08:59.17\00:09:02.64 and faith in all your persecutions 00:09:02.64\00:09:05.27 and in the afflictions that you are enduring." 00:09:05.27\00:09:09.28 One thing I wanna point out 00:09:09.28\00:09:11.58 is that 2 Thessalonians 1 verses 3-10 00:09:11.58\00:09:15.08 is a single sentence in the Greek. 00:09:15.08\00:09:18.49 Many translations you won't see that 00:09:18.49\00:09:20.39 because that's awfully awkward in the English. 00:09:20.39\00:09:23.36 Now the King James Bible has it right on this one 00:09:23.36\00:09:27.13 in that it if you read the King James Version 00:09:27.13\00:09:29.70 it has this as one single sentence 00:09:29.70\00:09:34.27 and that's why some people sometimes find the King James 00:09:34.27\00:09:37.07 difficult to read because sometimes it catches 00:09:37.07\00:09:39.77 these new answers better than more modern translations do. 00:09:39.77\00:09:45.01 Anyway Paul, here that the only verb 00:09:45.01\00:09:48.92 we have in here is we are obligated. 00:09:48.92\00:09:52.32 That's it. 00:09:52.32\00:09:53.79 We are obligated to give thanks to God always for you. 00:09:53.79\00:09:58.56 So we must keep in mind we're gonna get into 00:09:58.56\00:10:01.23 some scary stuff in these verses. 00:10:01.23\00:10:04.53 But his motivation, the basic reason for this 00:10:04.53\00:10:08.74 whole long sentence is we are obligated 00:10:08.74\00:10:11.01 to give thanks to God for you. 00:10:11.01\00:10:13.94 So verses 3-10 and as many places as it goes, 00:10:13.94\00:10:18.68 it's a prayer of thankfulness. 00:10:18.68\00:10:21.05 Paul is excited about everything 00:10:21.05\00:10:23.62 going on with the Thessalonians. 00:10:23.62\00:10:26.12 Are they troubled people? Absolutely. 00:10:26.12\00:10:28.79 I mean this is one of his toughest letters 00:10:28.79\00:10:32.79 and yet he can say, your faith's super growing, 00:10:32.79\00:10:37.47 your love is just increasing for everybody, 00:10:37.47\00:10:41.67 even for people outside and we boast about you 00:10:41.67\00:10:45.94 among all the churches and everywhere we go 00:10:45.94\00:10:48.94 in spite of date setting, in spite of lazy people 00:10:48.94\00:10:53.62 are quitting their jobs, in spite of disruptive 00:10:53.62\00:10:56.18 busy bodies in the church, 00:10:56.18\00:10:58.85 he can say we're thanking God for you. 00:10:58.85\00:11:01.59 We're thrilled about you 00:11:01.59\00:11:02.92 because your faith and love are just super growing. 00:11:02.92\00:11:06.83 It's amazing. That's present tenses. 00:11:06.83\00:11:09.23 Yeah, I love that all those verbs 00:11:09.23\00:11:10.73 are in the present tense, you know. 00:11:10.73\00:11:12.47 And in spite of them not being quote on quote 00:11:12.47\00:11:15.87 perfect or having that all together 00:11:15.87\00:11:17.57 they're still that growth. 00:11:17.57\00:11:18.64 Because they're becoming like we're talking about 00:11:18.64\00:11:20.08 another, in other episodes. 00:11:20.08\00:11:22.28 And you know it's kind of like, 00:11:22.28\00:11:23.58 I love how Jesus himself used the illustration 00:11:23.58\00:11:26.35 of how we grow like a plant. 00:11:26.35\00:11:28.98 In John Chapter 15 and He says 00:11:28.98\00:11:30.99 "I'm the vine, you are the branches." 00:11:30.99\00:11:33.09 And getting back to the Father, 00:11:33.09\00:11:34.26 the Father is the gardener. 00:11:34.26\00:11:36.12 The one who loves and tends 00:11:36.12\00:11:37.76 to the garden and helps it grow. 00:11:37.76\00:11:39.93 And He says, when you abide in me 00:11:39.93\00:11:41.70 you will bear much fruit. 00:11:41.70\00:11:43.47 You know you're gonna continue to grow 00:11:43.47\00:11:45.37 as long as you're connect you'll continue to grow. 00:11:45.37\00:11:47.47 And the words that He says in John 15 they're pretty blend 00:11:47.47\00:11:51.44 "apart from me you can do nothing. 00:11:51.44\00:11:53.24 Apart from me there is no growth but in Christ there is." 00:11:53.24\00:11:56.58 And I think in using that kind of 00:11:56.58\00:11:58.31 illustration of a plant it's important for us to 00:11:58.31\00:12:00.92 remember there are seasons of life. 00:12:00.92\00:12:03.08 And I think sometimes especially in North America 00:12:03.08\00:12:05.52 anyways we're so much focused on production. 00:12:05.52\00:12:08.52 You know and success and always being able to produce 24/7. 00:12:08.52\00:12:12.46 That's not the life of a plant. 00:12:12.46\00:12:14.23 That's not a life of vine and branches. 00:12:14.23\00:12:16.50 There's times in which the plant goes through 00:12:16.50\00:12:19.10 fall, winter, spring, and summer. 00:12:19.10\00:12:20.94 There's time when it's blooming 00:12:20.94\00:12:22.20 and it's producing fruits and there's time when it's dormant. 00:12:22.20\00:12:25.14 And there is times when the seasons comes so that it can, 00:12:25.14\00:12:27.88 it can produce but all within the context 00:12:27.88\00:12:30.91 of the gardener our Father and Jesus. 00:12:30.91\00:12:33.92 But it is like you said super growing, its super growing. 00:12:33.92\00:12:37.75 And so I wanna encourage people 00:12:37.75\00:12:40.39 that you maybe going through a time 00:12:40.39\00:12:41.86 maybe a winter but don't get discouraged 00:12:41.86\00:12:44.06 its part of the growth that God 00:12:44.06\00:12:45.83 brings into our lives abiding in Him. 00:12:45.83\00:12:48.00 In fact that verse in Chapter 15 of John 00:12:48.00\00:12:50.57 is the verse that talks about pruning 00:12:50.57\00:12:52.57 and so sometimes pruning I'm sure doesn't feel good. 00:12:52.57\00:12:55.30 But its part of that super growing 00:12:55.30\00:12:57.37 that you're talking about. 00:12:57.37\00:12:58.84 Wow, that opened up some like big windows 00:12:58.84\00:13:01.31 as I sit here and listen. 00:13:01.31\00:13:03.58 Let me just say a couple of more things 00:13:03.58\00:13:04.95 about this text till then we do need to go to a break. 00:13:04.95\00:13:07.62 First of all is here again 00:13:07.62\00:13:10.29 affirmation first criticism later. 00:13:10.29\00:13:13.49 People grow less from criticism 00:13:13.49\00:13:16.52 than they do from affirmation. 00:13:16.52\00:13:17.89 I find when I bang on people they get worse. 00:13:17.89\00:13:20.96 When I encourage them they tend to get better. 00:13:20.96\00:13:23.26 And Paul clearly knows that before he brings 00:13:23.26\00:13:25.77 any criticism, any correction, 00:13:25.77\00:13:27.54 he is affirming them very, very strongly. 00:13:27.54\00:13:30.81 And again we have a trio here faith, hope, and love. 00:13:30.81\00:13:34.54 Except here he says, faith, love, and patience. 00:13:34.54\00:13:38.95 So instead of hope there is patience here. 00:13:38.95\00:13:40.88 So he is continuing something about the Thessalonians. 00:13:40.88\00:13:45.19 He is so excited about them. 00:13:45.19\00:13:47.22 They somehow responded differently 00:13:47.22\00:13:50.26 than any of the church. 00:13:50.26\00:13:51.49 He fell in love with them. 00:13:51.49\00:13:53.06 I think part of the big picture here 00:13:53.06\00:13:55.26 is how they rejoiced in suffering. 00:13:55.26\00:13:58.30 And that's what we'll get into after the break. 00:13:58.30\00:14:00.64
