Welcome back. 00:00:01.20\00:00:02.76 Want to say just a little bit more 00:00:02.76\00:00:04.87 about verses 14 and 15, and that is the idea 00:00:04.87\00:00:07.94 here of balance, a balance on the one hand 00:00:07.94\00:00:12.31 of speaking highly, thinking highly of leaders, 00:00:12.31\00:00:15.41 on the other hand holding them accountable, 00:00:15.41\00:00:17.45 its a very important balance. 00:00:17.45\00:00:18.98 Pastor Jon, if anything more you want to say about it? 00:00:18.98\00:00:21.32 We know, and-- I like also the balance of, before 00:00:21.32\00:00:25.99 you hold somebody accountable, 00:00:25.99\00:00:27.16 they are not to be in that relationship, which Paul has. 00:00:27.16\00:00:29.52 Yes. He spent the bulk of the letter of front part, 00:00:29.52\00:00:31.96 reminding them about the relationship 00:00:31.96\00:00:34.00 and building them up and then, the admonitions. 00:00:34.00\00:00:36.56 And so sometimes you know, we can come at people, 00:00:36.56\00:00:38.80 once my calling to hold them accountable, 00:00:38.80\00:00:41.34 you know, and I don't even know the person and then, 00:00:41.34\00:00:43.47 it's hard for them to receive that, so, relationship is, 00:00:43.47\00:00:45.84 is a big part of this admonitions. 00:00:45.84\00:00:49.24 Good point. You know, if you will. Good point. 00:00:49.24\00:00:51.15 Lets move, yeah, lets move on to verses 16 through 18 00:00:51.15\00:00:54.68 and I'll read those for us. 00:00:54.68\00:00:56.89 Paul says, "At all times rejoice, constantly pray, 00:00:56.89\00:01:01.09 in all circumstances give thanks, 00:01:01.09\00:01:03.06 for this is the will of God for you in Jesus Christ." 00:01:03.06\00:01:07.10 And you notice how the verb comes at the end, 00:01:07.10\00:01:09.30 I translated these in such a way, that the cadence 00:01:09.30\00:01:12.77 of the original would be there, so three things here, 00:01:12.77\00:01:17.74 rejoice, pray, be thankful. How do you pray always? 00:01:17.74\00:01:23.68 You know, something I've been challenge in my church in, 00:01:23.68\00:01:26.05 just recently few months back, and I said, 00:01:26.05\00:01:29.18 you know part of God's will is for you to pray continually, 00:01:29.18\00:01:32.02 to pray constantly and so, you know, being aware of God and, 00:01:32.02\00:01:36.73 and having a conversation with him all throughout the day, 00:01:36.73\00:01:39.96 you know, not just maybe when I sit down to eat, 00:01:39.96\00:01:42.16 but all throughout the day. 00:01:42.16\00:01:43.57 One of the things I've asked the church to do is, every noon, 00:01:43.57\00:01:46.90 everyday at noon if people on our church would just paused 00:01:46.90\00:01:49.50 to pray and know that they're in conversation with God 00:01:49.50\00:01:52.87 as a community, even though we're scattered, 00:01:52.87\00:01:54.44 we're not gathered, but as a church we're scattered 00:01:54.44\00:01:56.64 we pray everyday at noon, and there are some other things 00:01:56.64\00:01:59.41 that we do, we have active prayer ministry at our church, 00:01:59.41\00:02:02.45 that is available to pray with people after the services. 00:02:02.45\00:02:05.59 We have people praying during the services, 00:02:05.59\00:02:07.39 you know, while I am preaching, while the worship is going on 00:02:07.39\00:02:09.62 and we see things happening in people's lives, 00:02:09.62\00:02:12.56 wasn't happening before, and we gather for prayers 00:02:12.56\00:02:15.46 at church during the week, once a month just to sit 00:02:15.46\00:02:17.93 at the feet of Jesus and be together. 00:02:17.93\00:02:19.47 There's so much, so much that you can do, 00:02:19.47\00:02:21.37 but, you have to be intentional, because prayer 00:02:21.37\00:02:23.27 is one of those things that is talked a lot about, 00:02:23.27\00:02:25.64 but I don't think practiced a lot. 00:02:25.64\00:02:28.04 I read one time that, that next to the Bible books 00:02:28.04\00:02:31.11 on prayer were the second highest, 00:02:31.11\00:02:33.52 people want to know about prayer and understand that, 00:02:33.52\00:02:35.28 but we have to be intentional in it, as, 00:02:35.28\00:02:38.25 as disciples of Jesus in doing that. 00:02:38.25\00:02:41.02 One of the things I've, I've reckon with here is the idea 00:02:41.02\00:02:44.79 that I find when I am closest to God, there are times 00:02:44.79\00:02:49.40 when your mind is sort of a nothing, when you just sort 00:02:49.40\00:02:52.07 of checked out a little bit and when I focus on that, 00:02:52.07\00:02:56.97 I find almost always there's some kind of spiritual song, 00:02:56.97\00:03:00.04 one morning it was just Jesus loves me, 00:03:00.04\00:03:02.54 I don't know where that came from, 00:03:02.54\00:03:03.71 I hadn't thought about that in years and yet it was like 00:03:03.71\00:03:07.25 a soundtrack in the back of my mind, I, I didn't put it there, 00:03:07.25\00:03:10.82 I wasn't think about. 00:03:10.82\00:03:12.09 When, when I am close to God that, that music background 00:03:12.09\00:03:15.59 sometimes is the way the continual prayer comes in. 00:03:15.59\00:03:19.13 It reminded me of a statement by my favorite author 00:03:19.13\00:03:21.86 outside the Bible, Ellen White, in a book Desire of Ages. 00:03:21.86\00:03:25.93 She says, "As a child Jesus carried into His labor 00:03:25.93\00:03:29.60 cheerfulness and tact. 00:03:29.60\00:03:31.11 Often He expressed the gladness of His heart 00:03:31.11\00:03:33.98 by singing psalms and heavenly songs. 00:03:33.98\00:03:37.28 Often the dwellers in Nazareth heard His voice raised in praise 00:03:37.28\00:03:40.85 and thanksgiving to God. 00:03:40.85\00:03:42.65 He held communion with heaven in song, 00:03:42.65\00:03:44.92 and as His companions complained 00:03:44.92\00:03:46.89 of weariness from labor, they were cheered 00:03:46.89\00:03:49.39 by the sweet melody from His lips. 00:03:49.39\00:03:51.49 His praise seemed to banish the evil angels, 00:03:51.49\00:03:54.10 and, like incense, fill the place with fragrance. 00:03:54.10\00:03:57.70 The minds of His hearers were carried away 00:03:57.70\00:03:59.87 from the earthly exile, to the heavenly home." 00:03:59.87\00:04:03.24 And I think music can play an important role to keep us 00:04:03.24\00:04:06.37 in touch with heaven. 00:04:06.37\00:04:08.78 One other thing is, is thankfulness. 00:04:08.78\00:04:11.58 When did you last thank God for the air 00:04:11.58\00:04:13.58 you're breathing, where would you be without that? 00:04:13.58\00:04:16.02 When did you thank Him for the color of the carpet, 00:04:16.02\00:04:18.09 or the cat or you know this is-- Right. 00:04:18.09\00:04:20.19 That the wind that just blew by had this refreshing breeze. 00:04:20.19\00:04:23.29 We have so many gifts from God, 00:04:23.29\00:04:25.06 and we don't thank Him often enough. 00:04:25.06\00:04:27.23 You know, its God's activity is around us all the time. 00:04:27.23\00:04:31.73 You know, it just His Holy Spirit, 00:04:31.73\00:04:33.64 Him through spirit is always trying to reach and connect 00:04:33.64\00:04:37.41 with us in so many ways, you know, 00:04:37.41\00:04:39.07 I love even just this morning, you know, open up 00:04:39.07\00:04:41.08 the front door and watching the sunrise, 00:04:41.08\00:04:43.51 hearing the wind through the trees, you know, 00:04:43.51\00:04:45.38 watching the clouds go side, no many can do that, 00:04:45.38\00:04:48.58 you know-- only God. 00:04:48.58\00:04:49.88 Just learning to say thank you God, whenever, 00:04:49.88\00:04:51.25 whenever you touch base with those realities. 00:04:51.25\00:04:54.42 Yeah, and you know, in prayer one other things 00:04:54.42\00:04:57.59 that I try to pray more, we often say God be with me, 00:04:57.59\00:05:00.66 God be with so and so, but, really my prayer is God 00:05:00.66\00:05:03.40 help me to be with you, I need to be aware of you, 00:05:03.40\00:05:06.27 help so and so to be with you today. 00:05:06.27\00:05:08.47 Yes. 'Cause He is always there. 00:05:08.47\00:05:09.84 Yes. Let's go on, verses 19 through 22. 00:05:09.84\00:05:15.61 Paul goes on to say, "The Spirit do not quench, 00:05:15.61\00:05:19.85 prophecies do not despise, all things test, 00:05:19.85\00:05:24.15 the good retain, from every form of evil abstain." 00:05:24.15\00:05:30.86 Now, couple of things I want to point out here, 00:05:30.86\00:05:33.09 the words that he is saying here are stop 00:05:33.09\00:05:36.20 despising prophecy, stop quenching the spirit. 00:05:36.20\00:05:38.97 Apparently the Thessalonians were spectacle of new light. 00:05:38.97\00:05:42.97 They were spectacle of messages 00:05:42.97\00:05:44.67 that they hadn't heard before. 00:05:44.67\00:05:46.74 And Paul says, stop doing that, 00:05:46.74\00:05:49.61 so I want you to be open, here's what you do. 00:05:49.61\00:05:52.45 Some new teaching comes along, 00:05:52.45\00:05:54.48 you know, don't just check out, test it out. 00:05:54.48\00:05:57.89 The point here is not about prophets, prophets, 00:05:57.89\00:06:01.39 it's about prophecy, it's, it's the neutral word. 00:06:01.39\00:06:05.06 He says don't despise prophecies, 00:06:05.06\00:06:08.43 but rather test them, test them out, and you know, 00:06:08.43\00:06:12.07 you have to do that, even when it's a true prophet, 00:06:12.07\00:06:14.70 even when it's scripture, you have to test how that scripture 00:06:14.70\00:06:19.07 applies to your situation. 00:06:19.07\00:06:20.61 Imagine if a prophet is writing two letters, 00:06:20.61\00:06:23.65 one letter to a lazy person, the other letter to a person 00:06:23.65\00:06:26.95 who is a workaholic, what would the prophet have to do, 00:06:26.95\00:06:30.65 give opposite advise. Right, sure. 00:06:30.65\00:06:32.89 And if the letters got crossed in the mail, 00:06:32.89\00:06:36.69 big trouble did you see, so that's where discernment 00:06:36.69\00:06:39.59 comes in, that's where testing comes in, 00:06:39.59\00:06:42.86 that you don't simply read the prophecy, okay, that's it, 00:06:42.86\00:06:45.77 that's what we got to do, you apply it to the situation. 00:06:45.77\00:06:49.17 You think about it through the Holy Spirit. 00:06:49.17\00:06:51.31 How you can best use it, hold faster that which is good 00:06:51.31\00:06:54.94 for that situation. 00:06:54.94\00:06:56.64 So Paul is saying, be open to new ideas, 00:06:56.64\00:06:59.18 definitely always be open to scripture. 00:06:59.18\00:07:02.18 I think sometimes we tend to just go to the Bible 00:07:02.18\00:07:04.69 to support what we already believe 00:07:04.69\00:07:06.82 or what we already think, and that's dangerous, 00:07:06.82\00:07:09.09 that's dangerous, but when we go to Revelation, 00:07:09.09\00:07:12.36 we go to the prophecies, when we go to what the Bible 00:07:12.36\00:07:15.13 has to say that were open to it, 00:07:15.13\00:07:17.47 but we're also testing, we're careful. 00:07:17.47\00:07:20.44 We say, don't just take the first application 00:07:20.44\00:07:23.04 that comes to mind, but maybe see if God 00:07:23.04\00:07:25.61 has something else in that text, that you need to hear. 00:07:25.61\00:07:28.71 Yeah. It's not balance, on the one hand the balance 00:07:28.71\00:07:32.28 between tradition on the one hand 00:07:32.28\00:07:34.65 and new light on the other, a balance between revelation 00:07:34.65\00:07:38.69 and reason both of those. 00:07:38.69\00:07:41.36 I think you ran across a quotation, 00:07:41.36\00:07:42.89 not too long ago that, that might be helpful here. 00:07:42.89\00:07:45.39 Yeah, here's this saying, 00:07:45.39\00:07:47.83 "Become like skillful moneychangers, 00:07:47.83\00:07:50.97 who reject much of what they examine, 00:07:50.97\00:07:52.83 but hold fast to whatever is genuine." 00:07:52.83\00:07:55.84 You know, that was actually 00:07:55.84\00:07:57.07 an ancient tradition about Jesus. 00:07:57.07\00:07:59.67 We don't know for sure if Jesus made that comment, 00:07:59.67\00:08:02.88 but, is very, very possible, it's, it's a very early 00:08:02.88\00:08:06.25 text that says that. 00:08:06.25\00:08:08.08 And then I think also, you know all of this, 00:08:08.08\00:08:12.39 that Paul would warn us to be careful, to be studious, 00:08:12.39\00:08:16.96 to be thoughtful. 00:08:16.96\00:08:18.09 We have many lessons to learn, many, many to unlearn, 00:08:18.09\00:08:22.06 this is again from Ellen White, 00:08:22.06\00:08:24.17 Review and-- Herald July 26, 1892, 00:08:24.17\00:08:28.00 "Many lessons to learn, many to unlearn. 00:08:28.00\00:08:31.37 God and heaven alone are infallible. 00:08:31.37\00:08:34.61 Those who think that they will never 00:08:34.61\00:08:35.94 have to give up a cherished view, never have occasion 00:08:35.94\00:08:39.51 to change an opinion, will be disappointed." 00:08:39.51\00:08:42.78 So as we hold on to our own ideas and opinions 00:08:42.78\00:08:45.22 with determine persistency, we cannot have 00:08:45.22\00:08:48.06 the unity for which Christ prayed. 00:08:48.06\00:08:50.73 Wow, that's powerful. So, let's go the last verses, 00:08:50.73\00:08:54.50 the time is almost running out. 00:08:54.50\00:08:56.63 All right. Verses 23 through 27. 00:08:56.63\00:09:00.47 "May the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, 00:09:00.47\00:09:03.44 and may your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved 00:09:03.44\00:09:06.64 blamelessly at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:09:06.64\00:09:09.74 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it, 00:09:09.74\00:09:12.98 Brothers, pray for us. 00:09:12.98\00:09:14.72 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. 00:09:14.72\00:09:17.15 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter 00:09:17.15\00:09:19.02 read by all the saints, brothers." 00:09:19.02\00:09:21.72 What a great, great scripture. 00:09:21.72\00:09:24.46 Yes, there are couple of things we want to mention briefly, 00:09:24.46\00:09:26.86 first of all spirit, soul and body. 00:09:26.86\00:09:29.86 Some people have try to be really precise, 00:09:29.86\00:09:32.83 you know, psychologically and simple logically, 00:09:32.83\00:09:36.10 you know, what part of you is body, 00:09:36.10\00:09:38.01 what part of you is spirit, what part of you is soul. 00:09:38.01\00:09:40.94 The ancients were not that precise. 00:09:40.94\00:09:42.71 I think when you see how these terms are used 00:09:42.71\00:09:44.68 throughout the Bible, all the great scholars 00:09:44.68\00:09:47.28 would agree that Hebrew mindset is were whole person's, 00:09:47.28\00:09:50.49 we're not a mind without a body, 00:09:50.49\00:09:52.55 we're not a soul without a body. 00:09:52.55\00:09:54.96 The body is the place where God has put all of us together, 00:09:54.96\00:09:58.76 and we are whole persons and so, Paul is saying here 00:09:58.76\00:10:04.20 whole person submission, just go all out every fiber 00:10:04.20\00:10:08.20 you're being submitted to God, that's the place, that's, 00:10:08.20\00:10:11.17 that's readiness for the second coming. 00:10:11.17\00:10:13.51 Yeah. One other thing I want to point out here is, 00:10:13.51\00:10:15.84 in this text it says preserved blamelessly 00:10:15.84\00:10:20.58 at the coming of our Lord Jesus. 00:10:20.58\00:10:22.75 In some translations it suggest that maybe 00:10:22.75\00:10:24.99 at the second coming of Jesus, people will be more blameless 00:10:24.99\00:10:28.32 than they are now, that isn't what this text is saying. 00:10:28.32\00:10:31.43 In the original language it says, preserved blameless, 00:10:31.43\00:10:34.36 now as Paul is saying, I want you to stay 00:10:34.36\00:10:36.67 where you are now, all away through to the end, 00:10:36.67\00:10:39.23 the faithfulness where you are now, yes more and more, 00:10:39.23\00:10:41.94 grow and grow, but you are faithful now, 00:10:41.94\00:10:44.77 I want you to stay faithful till the end, 00:10:44.77\00:10:47.68 be preserved blameless, are these guys messed up, 00:10:47.68\00:10:50.91 yes there, yet he is encouraging them, he says no, 00:10:50.91\00:10:54.05 he says what you have is important. 00:10:54.05\00:10:56.58 At every stage of our life we maybe submitted to God. 00:10:56.58\00:11:00.99 At every stage of our life we maybe as perfect 00:11:00.99\00:11:03.63 as we can be at that stage, and I think that's, 00:11:03.63\00:11:06.96 that's what he is talking about here. 00:11:06.96\00:11:08.86 Well, it's, its amazing to see how Paul 00:11:11.50\00:11:16.97 calls us to this balance, this balance of in relationships 00:11:16.97\00:11:22.24 and so forth, but do you, are you actually denying 00:11:22.24\00:11:27.08 character growth when you're saying that or? 00:11:27.08\00:11:28.98 No, not at all, the Hebrew is extremely practical and so, 00:11:28.98\00:11:32.72 he, he gives us very specific. 00:11:32.72\00:11:34.69 The Thessalonians are in a good place 00:11:34.69\00:11:36.56 in spite of their problems, but he's also saying 00:11:36.56\00:11:38.93 more and more, grow and -- grow, and those of us 00:11:38.93\00:11:43.00 who are walking with the Lord, 00:11:43.00\00:11:44.30 we're never gonna stop growing. 00:11:44.30\00:11:45.83 I constantly have to confront, you know, in my own life 00:11:45.83\00:11:49.47 things that, that aren't where they ought to be. 00:11:49.47\00:11:53.27 So he encourages us to be faithful 00:11:53.27\00:11:55.71 to what we have, but keep on growing. 00:11:55.71\00:12:00.65 Yeah, well, well, well, this has been rich 00:12:00.65\00:12:02.55 as always with you, Dr. Paulien always been rich. 00:12:02.55\00:12:05.29 But, we want to thank you for being with us 00:12:05.29\00:12:08.36 and it's been so great. 00:12:08.36\00:12:09.52 I want to encourage you, maybe there are areas 00:12:09.52\00:12:11.39 in your life that God is calling you to balance, 00:12:11.39\00:12:13.86 maybe it's understanding scripture in the different way 00:12:13.86\00:12:16.03 than you have or how you work 00:12:16.03\00:12:18.00 with your leaders and so forth. 00:12:18.00\00:12:19.87 We want to invite you to join us next time, 00:12:19.87\00:12:21.90 when we begin Second Thessalonians. 00:12:21.90\00:12:24.34 Until then God bless you, we look forward to see you again. 00:12:24.34\00:12:27.18
