Welcome to Books of the book. 00:00:21.42\00:00:23.62 We've been studying the letters of Paul 00:00:23.62\00:00:25.65 to the Thessalonians and in previous programs 00:00:25.65\00:00:28.29 we've been working our way through first Thessalonians. 00:00:28.29\00:00:31.49 And now we're at the very conclusion 00:00:31.49\00:00:33.53 of that series of studies. 00:00:33.53\00:00:34.93 First Thessalonians five and verses 12:27. 00:00:34.93\00:00:39.07 I am Jon Paulien. 00:00:39.07\00:00:40.37 Dean of the school of Religion at Loma Linda University, 00:00:40.37\00:00:43.24 and with me is my pastor Jon Ciccarelli, 00:00:43.24\00:00:46.04 pastor at the Calimesa Seventh-Day Adventist Church. 00:00:46.04\00:00:49.94 Jon, it's good to be together again 00:00:49.94\00:00:51.48 and we're finally bringing first Thessalonians to a close. 00:00:51.48\00:00:54.32 I'm looking forward to second Thessalonians 00:00:54.32\00:00:56.25 in our next episode. 00:00:56.25\00:00:57.59 But today we're looking at verses 12:27, 00:00:57.59\00:01:00.42 and Paul just gets really practical here. 00:01:00.42\00:01:02.76 He talks about leadership. 00:01:02.76\00:01:04.39 He has a lot of admonitions that we're gonna look at, 00:01:04.39\00:01:06.70 but really practical stuff for the church. 00:01:06.70\00:01:09.03 So I'm looking forward to our, our study today. 00:01:09.03\00:01:11.60 Why don't we jump into that? 00:01:11.60\00:01:12.83 All right. Well, this is -- one of those places 00:01:12.83\00:01:14.57 where the Greek scholarship really is extremely helpful 00:01:14.57\00:01:18.71 because in verses 12:22 you have a series of 17 admonitions. 00:01:18.71\00:01:25.18 But interestingly enough the first nine of these 00:01:25.18\00:01:28.65 which are about mentoring, Discipleship, 00:01:28.65\00:01:32.05 you know, leaders and members how they relate to each other, 00:01:32.05\00:01:35.29 the first nine, the verb comes first. 00:01:35.29\00:01:38.56 So it starts through the verb 00:01:38.56\00:01:39.63 and then you have little statement. 00:01:39.63\00:01:41.00 Then the last eight where he's talking about 00:01:41.00\00:01:44.80 how to deal with attitudes toward prophecy and attitudes 00:01:44.80\00:01:50.27 relating to prayer and joyfulness and the verb comes 00:01:50.27\00:01:53.24 at the end each time. You have these, these clip 00:01:53.24\00:01:55.08 statements, first nine the verbs at the beginning, 00:01:55.08\00:01:58.45 second eight the verbs at the end, it's a little bit like, 00:01:58.45\00:02:01.52 like preaching a thing. You see, he's got King's going. 00:02:01.52\00:02:04.12 He's on a roll. He's on a roll 00:02:04.12\00:02:05.92 and I think we gonna have some fun with this. 00:02:05.92\00:02:08.26 Yeah, yeah, great. So why don't we get started 00:02:08.26\00:02:11.69 and we can go right into verses 12 and 13? 00:02:11.69\00:02:16.77 Perhaps you could read that first. 00:02:16.77\00:02:18.67 Paul says, "Now we ask you, brothers 00:02:18.67\00:02:21.47 to respect those who labor among you, 00:02:21.47\00:02:23.94 and who are placed over you, and who admonish you, 00:02:23.94\00:02:26.78 and to regard them super highly on account of their work. 00:02:26.78\00:02:30.21 Be at peace with one another." 00:02:30.21\00:02:32.58 Couple of things I want to say 00:02:32.58\00:02:33.95 about that passage right away. 00:02:33.95\00:02:35.98 First of all that builds on verse 11. 00:02:35.98\00:02:38.62 He's summed up everything he said before 00:02:38.62\00:02:40.86 was encourage one another. 00:02:40.86\00:02:42.66 We encouraging to one another. 00:02:42.66\00:02:44.16 I think what we're getting into here 00:02:44.16\00:02:46.59 is sort of explicating that, encourage one another, you see. 00:02:46.59\00:02:50.97 And the other thing I'd mentioned 00:02:50.97\00:02:52.77 is in these two verses he's talking 00:02:52.77\00:02:54.97 to the members of the church 00:02:54.97\00:02:56.57 and how they're supposed to relate to their leaders. 00:02:56.57\00:02:59.14 And as a pastor I really like this verse. Okay. 00:02:59.14\00:03:02.98 But, you know, I like what he brings up 00:03:02.98\00:03:05.55 here though because there's a lot to be said 00:03:05.55\00:03:08.02 for mentoring and discipleship. 00:03:08.02\00:03:09.98 I mean Jesus said go make disciples and sometimes 00:03:09.98\00:03:13.22 I think if we're not careful, you know, 00:03:13.22\00:03:15.36 things can just become all about programs, 00:03:15.36\00:03:17.69 you know, at the church, programs, 00:03:17.69\00:03:18.73 more programs, more programs, 00:03:18.73\00:03:19.89 and you can have lots of programs, 00:03:19.89\00:03:22.00 without any disciplining taking place, 00:03:22.00\00:03:23.40 without any intentional leadership taking place. 00:03:23.40\00:03:26.07 And as leaders we have to be extra careful. 00:03:26.07\00:03:29.37 And we've talked about this in the other episodes 00:03:29.37\00:03:31.24 by keeping ourselves in check. 00:03:31.24\00:03:32.77 We're not just trying to build our empire, 00:03:32.77\00:03:35.31 you know, our personal empire, but that we are 00:03:35.31\00:03:37.58 by the grace of God allow Him to build up His kingdom 00:03:37.58\00:03:40.78 through us in the lives of people. 00:03:40.78\00:03:42.58 And that's something I know I always 00:03:42.58\00:03:43.72 have to keep myself in check on. 00:03:43.72\00:03:45.49 And that I am not just about productivity or empire building, 00:03:45.49\00:03:48.66 I don't want that at all. I want God's kingdom 00:03:48.66\00:03:50.69 to reign in me and to reign on those that I am leading, 00:03:50.69\00:03:53.03 and by His grace that happens. 00:03:53.03\00:03:55.26 You know, when I came to the Calimesa church, 00:03:55.26\00:03:58.00 and they had their search committee together. 00:03:58.00\00:04:00.67 Some people may know Louis Venden. 00:04:00.67\00:04:02.64 He was on that search committee. Lou intimidating 00:04:02.64\00:04:04.47 you know, when we showed up to search committee 00:04:04.47\00:04:05.84 and Louis Venden was sitting there-- 00:04:05.84\00:04:07.78 One of my faculty, and -- very highly regarded person. 00:04:07.78\00:04:09.58 Oh, yes, and great preacher, 00:04:09.58\00:04:12.08 and I asked Lou afterwards I said, I said, Lou, 00:04:12.08\00:04:17.19 if God wills it that -- I come here in Calimesa 00:04:17.19\00:04:19.59 would you be willing to enter into a mentoring relationship? 00:04:19.59\00:04:22.79 I saw God was -- giving me a gift in Lou. 00:04:22.79\00:04:25.59 If I came to Calimesa to -- continue to build into my life 00:04:25.59\00:04:28.03 as one of my mentors and -- of course, you know he said, oh. 00:04:28.03\00:04:30.77 He's such a humble man. He says, oh, oh, 00:04:30.77\00:04:32.50 this would be a mutual thing. 00:04:32.50\00:04:33.94 And I said no, no, Lou, let's get this right. 00:04:33.94\00:04:36.04 It'd be completely downward mentoring me. 00:04:36.04\00:04:38.74 You would be mentoring me. 00:04:38.74\00:04:40.04 And we get together about every six weeks. 00:04:40.04\00:04:41.88 We have lunch together and, and the spirit of God 00:04:41.88\00:04:44.05 just oozes out of him. 00:04:44.05\00:04:45.28 But we need to allow the church to be a safe place 00:04:45.28\00:04:48.35 where we can have mentors, who can minister the love of God 00:04:48.35\00:04:51.49 to us and grow us and disciple us in that. 00:04:51.49\00:04:54.72 And our churches, I think, it's important 00:04:54.72\00:04:56.46 that they're multigenerational. 00:04:56.46\00:04:58.33 One of the sad things we see so much segregation 00:04:58.33\00:05:01.46 with the generations, and I think we miss out 00:05:01.46\00:05:04.10 on the lot of the disciplining in that way because we have, 00:05:04.10\00:05:08.04 we have this cutting off with the generations 00:05:08.04\00:05:10.27 and so we don't have the older generations 00:05:10.27\00:05:12.94 building the younger generations 00:05:12.94\00:05:14.34 and the younger generations are missing out as well. 00:05:14.34\00:05:17.08 I was leading worship one time at a church in San Diego 00:05:17.08\00:05:20.92 and we would do some, some courses but we do some hymns 00:05:20.92\00:05:24.59 as well and we did save you like a Shepherd Lead Us, 00:05:24.59\00:05:29.46 you know, that hymn and I had someone in their 40s come up 00:05:29.46\00:05:33.09 to me and say, wow, we really loved 00:05:33.09\00:05:34.13 that new song you did today. 00:05:34.13\00:05:35.33 I said what song was that? 00:05:35.33\00:05:37.90 The one about the shepherd. 00:05:37.90\00:05:39.13 And I thought my goodness this person 00:05:39.13\00:05:40.47 has never heard this hymn and he has been raised 00:05:40.47\00:05:42.24 in the Adventist Church his whole life. 00:05:42.24\00:05:43.97 Obviously there is some, some segregation there. 00:05:43.97\00:05:46.44 But it's important, it's important that we, 00:05:46.44\00:05:48.64 that we keep the generations together 00:05:48.64\00:05:50.88 and that we be intentional 00:05:50.88\00:05:52.21 about our mentoring and our disciplining. 00:05:52.21\00:05:54.52 And so, I, I can go on forever, you know, on this. 00:05:54.52\00:05:56.52 But I'm gonna, I'm gonna stop with this so that we continue 00:05:56.52\00:05:58.55 move into our texts, but this is something 00:05:58.55\00:05:59.95 that's close to my heart. 00:05:59.95\00:06:01.19 All right, I appreciate that very much. 00:06:01.19\00:06:03.43 You probably wondering what has to Jon 00:06:03.43\00:06:06.66 so excited about in this -- text, it's because Paul 00:06:06.66\00:06:09.16 is telling the members how they should treat 00:06:09.16\00:06:11.93 their leaders and he tells them to respect them highly. 00:06:11.93\00:06:16.94 He says those who labor among you, who are placed over you 00:06:16.94\00:06:20.11 and admonish you, respect them highly. 00:06:20.11\00:06:23.28 You see, he's encouraging people, somebody 00:06:23.28\00:06:25.85 who is in-charge within the church. 00:06:25.85\00:06:28.12 It's tough work. 00:06:28.12\00:06:29.72 It's difficult stuff and they need encouragement too. 00:06:29.72\00:06:32.79 And sometimes we would, the pastor does all the encouraging. 00:06:32.79\00:06:35.19 We, we just sort of knock back, but no, 00:06:35.19\00:06:37.36 pastors need encouragement too. 00:06:37.36\00:06:39.46 And Paul is saying this here. 00:06:39.46\00:06:42.03 Now at this stage of the churches 00:06:42.03\00:06:43.93 history it's very early. 00:06:43.93\00:06:45.73 And they don't have officers yet. 00:06:45.73\00:06:47.47 Later on they were elders and deacons and Bishops 00:06:47.47\00:06:50.54 and different things like that. 00:06:50.54\00:06:52.61 But this is only 20 years 00:06:52.61\00:06:54.84 after the death of resurrection of Jesus 00:06:54.84\00:06:56.91 and basically the only office here is this is those 00:06:56.91\00:07:00.95 who are placed over you. 00:07:00.95\00:07:03.35 It's interesting, the early church shied away from 00:07:03.35\00:07:06.42 the leadership language of Ancient Rome. 00:07:06.42\00:07:09.39 They had words that we get words like Hegemon, 00:07:09.39\00:07:12.63 monarchy, these are -- all based on the, 00:07:12.63\00:07:15.23 on the Roman Latin and so on. 00:07:15.23\00:07:17.23 It has the idea of someone who is in power over you. 00:07:17.23\00:07:19.90 The only leadership word that the early church accepted 00:07:19.90\00:07:23.87 from that whole scene was these word 00:07:23.87\00:07:26.44 those who are over you, because in the Roman context 00:07:26.44\00:07:31.01 those who are over you, were people who cared about you. 00:07:31.01\00:07:35.52 It was, it was almost a family kind of a thing, 00:07:35.52\00:07:37.69 the caring connection. 00:07:37.69\00:07:38.75 And the Christian said that's the word we can use. 00:07:38.75\00:07:41.32 But these other words, they only applied to Jesus. 00:07:41.32\00:07:44.73 It's very interesting. Later on they picked up words 00:07:44.73\00:07:47.40 from the Synagogue and the -- home that they use elders, 00:07:47.40\00:07:50.80 deacons and so on language that they used for leadership. 00:07:50.80\00:07:54.50 Now here he's says "respect those who labor among you, 00:07:54.50\00:07:58.87 regard them super highly." 00:07:58.87\00:08:01.14 Paul loves that word "Super," 00:08:01.14\00:08:02.71 regard them super-highly who admonish you. 00:08:02.71\00:08:06.65 And this word "admonish" is a tough Greek word, 00:08:06.65\00:08:09.62 it kind of means knock some sense into you. 00:08:09.62\00:08:12.69 So do you ever have to do that, Pastor? 00:08:12.69\00:08:15.06 Oh, absolutely, you know. No, but sometimes-- 00:08:15.06\00:08:17.99 Tell me about it. I have members who...who 00:08:17.99\00:08:20.96 recognized I need some sense 00:08:20.96\00:08:22.03 knocked into me too every once in a while, you know. 00:08:22.03\00:08:25.07 But no, it's a, but it's not always welcomed. 00:08:25.07\00:08:27.74 I mean, I think personally it's hard for us to welcome 00:08:27.74\00:08:30.44 when someone comes up and admonishes us, 00:08:30.44\00:08:32.94 come and tries to knock some sense into us. 00:08:32.94\00:08:35.71 But--but it's that, I think it's that tough love. 00:08:35.71\00:08:39.71 You know, being willing to say the things that someone 00:08:39.71\00:08:42.75 might need to hear because you love them so much. 00:08:42.75\00:08:45.15 Yeah. You know, if we never talked honestly 00:08:45.15\00:08:49.42 in that way then, then we -- prevent people from growing 00:08:49.42\00:08:52.93 the relationship with God 00:08:52.93\00:08:54.30 and maybe the relationships through others. 00:08:54.30\00:08:55.93 And I mean look at Jesus, look at all the tough love 00:08:55.93\00:08:57.97 he gave to the religious leaders. 00:08:57.97\00:08:59.73 There is a lot of tough love. 00:08:59.73\00:09:01.67 And He spoke those things because he loved them but it's 00:09:01.67\00:09:04.27 not easy. Well, confrontation is critical to relationship 00:09:04.27\00:09:06.74 because it's letting people know that there is things 00:09:06.74\00:09:09.38 that they're doing that -- will scuttle the relationship 00:09:09.38\00:09:12.68 unless they're made aware of that, 00:09:12.68\00:09:14.22 unless some change comes in. 00:09:14.22\00:09:16.15 As a Bible scholar, I have to deal with that. 00:09:16.15\00:09:19.59 When I am going to some tough biblical text 00:09:19.59\00:09:22.22 and I make clear everybody says, oh, wonderful I. 00:09:22.22\00:09:25.26 I just love that, you see. 00:09:25.26\00:09:26.93 But in sometimes I go to a text 00:09:26.93\00:09:28.70 that a person thought was clear, was clear to them. 00:09:28.70\00:09:31.40 Yeah. I said, you know, that's not really what it saying. 00:09:31.40\00:09:34.17 Suddenly, you're not so popular--Changed or popular- 00:09:34.17\00:09:37.91 And so Paul here is saying look, 00:09:37.91\00:09:40.64 though this is tough work, this admonishing. 00:09:40.64\00:09:43.48 So give them respect and, and, and, 00:09:43.48\00:09:45.95 and show the right attitude. 00:09:45.95\00:09:48.95 Interestingly enough is there is a whole background here. 00:09:48.95\00:09:53.02 I talked about the popular philosophers 00:09:53.02\00:09:54.89 in earlier programs that were going around in the cities 00:09:54.89\00:09:57.93 just like Paul was and-- they had these whole idea 00:09:57.93\00:10:00.96 of how to diagnose where people were at 00:10:00.96\00:10:04.60 and to be sensitive to when they're open 00:10:04.60\00:10:08.04 to conviction and when they're not, 00:10:08.04\00:10:09.50 when you can admonish them and when you can't. 00:10:09.50\00:10:12.91 There is a right timing to talk to people. 00:10:12.91\00:10:15.98 There is an appropriate remedy and it inappropriate remedy 00:10:15.98\00:10:18.55 and all that stuff is discussed in detail 00:10:18.55\00:10:20.58 in ancient Greek writings. 00:10:20.58\00:10:22.85 And examine yourself before you admonish somebody else. 00:10:22.85\00:10:27.36 Paul adds one thing to all of these, and that is that God 00:10:27.36\00:10:31.93 ultimately is the model of leadership, not us. 00:10:31.93\00:10:35.30 And if we're following God's model of leadership 00:10:35.30\00:10:37.90 then we will know when to admonish and when not. 00:10:37.90\00:10:42.30 So the Paul doesn't balance it out here. 00:10:42.30\00:10:46.04 He can be tough on leaders too. 00:10:46.04\00:10:48.41 In second Corinthians 10:13 he holds them accountable. 00:10:48.41\00:10:51.25 So balance is important to you. 00:10:51.25\00:10:53.95 Yes, hold your leaders respectful, honor them, 00:10:53.95\00:10:58.12 but at the same time hold them accountable. 00:10:58.12\00:11:00.89 Both things are necessary 00:11:00.89\00:11:02.36 and finding that balance can be the tough thing. 00:11:02.36\00:11:04.69 Yeah, and I think you know it's important to remember that, 00:11:04.69\00:11:07.83 that leaders, pastors and so forth are still in discipleship. 00:11:07.83\00:11:13.97 There are still being led by God, hopefully. 00:11:13.97\00:11:16.67 And we're still, you know, it's not like 00:11:16.67\00:11:18.27 the pastor is the master discipliner. 00:11:18.27\00:11:20.68 I mean is disciplining everybody, 00:11:20.68\00:11:21.88 but he is also being disciple by God 00:11:21.88\00:11:23.58 through His congregation or -- whoever the leader might be, 00:11:23.58\00:11:25.91 those who are leading. 00:11:25.91\00:11:27.42 And, and looking to God to continue disciple him. 00:11:27.42\00:11:30.29 And when that happens then we become 00:11:30.29\00:11:33.22 like you said lead like Jesus. 00:11:33.22\00:11:34.72 Jesus was a servant leader. 00:11:34.72\00:11:37.13 It was, you know, often times we look at-- 00:11:37.13\00:11:38.93 organizational structure and leadership when we think 00:11:38.93\00:11:42.16 of this pyramid with the leader at the top. 00:11:42.16\00:11:44.70 But Jesus really flipped that Pyramid upside down, 00:11:44.70\00:11:48.30 you know, were he was at the bottom and He was lifting 00:11:48.30\00:11:50.57 and He was serving and He was edifying and that's really 00:11:50.57\00:11:53.38 the model of leadership that we see in God 00:11:53.38\00:11:55.64 that he became a servant. 00:11:55.64\00:11:57.55 You know, left heaven to come and serve us, 00:11:57.55\00:12:00.25 to love us so much and to save us, you know. 00:12:00.25\00:12:03.15 And the other part that's so important I think with 00:12:03.15\00:12:06.02 leadership is that who we are when the spotlights not on. 00:12:06.02\00:12:10.96 It's what, is where who we really are. 00:12:10.96\00:12:12.79 It's about character. Exactly. 00:12:12.79\00:12:14.13 And we talked about that in chapter two, 00:12:14.13\00:12:15.90 didn't we? Yeah, yeah. 00:12:15.90\00:12:17.30 Well, we need to move ahead verses 14 and 15 00:12:17.30\00:12:20.40 and let me-- mention once again 00:12:20.40\00:12:21.87 these translations are my own, 00:12:21.87\00:12:24.04 so that we can try to get some of the flavor of the grammar 00:12:24.04\00:12:26.81 of the Greek here from time to time 00:12:26.81\00:12:28.48 and the unusual meanings of words. 00:12:28.48\00:12:31.48 We also encourage you, brothers, it says, 00:12:31.48\00:12:34.25 "admonish the unruly, cheer up the discouraged, 00:12:34.25\00:12:37.95 take an interest in the weak, be patient with everyone, 00:12:37.95\00:12:42.76 see that no one pays back evil for anyone else's evil, 00:12:42.76\00:12:46.90 but always pursue what is good, 00:12:46.90\00:12:48.70 towards one another and toward everyone." 00:12:48.70\00:12:51.10 Here I see him talking to leaders 00:12:51.10\00:12:54.44 about confronting people and so on. 00:12:54.44\00:12:57.24 And this, the language here is very interesting. 00:12:57.24\00:13:00.64 He says admonish knock sense into the unruly, 00:13:00.64\00:13:04.61 the word, the Greek word for unruly here, 00:13:04.61\00:13:07.38 kind of has the meaning of people 00:13:07.38\00:13:10.79 who are willfully difficult. 00:13:10.79\00:13:12.79 They're people who are just messed up, 00:13:12.79\00:13:14.99 you know, but there are people 00:13:14.99\00:13:16.52 who are trying to be difficult, 00:13:16.52\00:13:18.19 who are-- disruptive by nature. 00:13:18.19\00:13:20.30 These are the ones you knock sense into, he says. 00:13:20.30\00:13:22.80 Then there are people who are discouraged. 00:13:22.80\00:13:26.84 The Greek word here actually could 00:13:26.84\00:13:28.54 be translated little souls. 00:13:28.54\00:13:30.91 These are people who think small, 00:13:30.91\00:13:33.64 people who don't have the lot of self-confidence. 00:13:33.64\00:13:36.44 And then he says, in addition to that taking 00:13:36.44\00:13:39.21 interest in the weak, the weak, are people 00:13:39.21\00:13:42.58 who are moral and spiritual limitations. 00:13:42.58\00:13:45.69 They're easily discouraged. 00:13:45.69\00:13:47.99 They're fearful. 00:13:47.99\00:13:49.39 In fact pastors sometimes stay away from them. 00:13:49.39\00:13:52.19 They gonna say, they're never gonna change. 00:13:52.19\00:13:53.53 These are people no matter what you say 00:13:53.53\00:13:54.96 they never carry it out, you see. 00:13:54.96\00:13:57.40 So Paul here is counseling the leaders 00:13:57.40\00:14:01.84 how to deal with people and the final word in this verse 00:14:01.84\00:14:05.64 is where he says, look don't payback evil for evil. 00:14:05.64\00:14:10.41 If you're leader, evil's gonna happen. 00:14:10.41\00:14:12.88 If you're a leader, you gonna be criticized. 00:14:12.88\00:14:15.18 If you're a leader, you gonna have to suffer. 00:14:15.18\00:14:17.35 Don't payback, because the -- minute the leader pays back 00:14:17.35\00:14:21.72 the way he's been treated 00:14:21.72\00:14:23.63 that-it disrupts the entire community. 00:14:23.63\00:14:27.13 It's a disaster, so some super council from Paul 00:14:27.13\00:14:31.03 here about practical everyday affairs. 00:14:31.03\00:14:33.60 It's time to go for a break. 00:14:33.60\00:14:35.37 We'll see you back in just a little bit. 00:14:35.37\00:14:37.11
