Welcome to Books of the Book where we are studying 00:00:23.18\00:00:25.95 1 and 2 Thessalonians, we are in chapter 4 today. 00:00:25.95\00:00:29.06 Doctor Pauline it is good to be here with you again. 00:00:29.06\00:00:32.63 So why don't you pick us up now and 1 Thessalonians 4. 00:00:32.63\00:00:36.06 Well in chapter four Paul is getting to the practical 00:00:36.06\00:00:40.40 part of his counsel, he's moving from the affirmations and 00:00:40.40\00:00:44.37 now he is coming to maybe spank them a little bit. 00:00:44.37\00:00:47.71 There is a couple of areas that he is really concerned 00:00:47.71\00:00:51.01 about in our passage verses 1-12. 00:00:51.01\00:00:53.45 One is the area of sexuality and how the members relate to 00:00:53.45\00:00:57.29 each other in that way. 00:00:57.29\00:00:58.42 Second is the area of work ethic and how hard they work 00:00:58.42\00:01:03.36 and some of that. 00:01:03.36\00:01:04.76 So he, he is out to remedy the deficit in their practice. 00:01:04.76\00:01:09.13 In particular I think he is concerned here about how they 00:01:09.13\00:01:13.50 behave in relation to outsiders. 00:01:13.50\00:01:15.57 The one thing the Church cannot afford is outsiders 00:01:15.57\00:01:17.97 to look at the church and say the people are really 00:01:17.97\00:01:20.34 messed up. - Yeah! - And it's true. - Right. 00:01:20.34\00:01:22.98 So Paul is saying, these are a couple of areas, if you are 00:01:22.98\00:01:26.38 out of line on these it not only causes problems in your 00:01:26.38\00:01:29.68 life, but it even disrupts the church's witness. 00:01:29.68\00:01:32.92 Paul can't stand that. 00:01:32.92\00:01:34.29 Yeah that's huge, that's huge. 00:01:34.29\00:01:36.62 Our passage to begin with is in verses 1 and 2 00:01:36.62\00:01:42.86 of chapter 4, and Paul writes this: 00:01:42.86\00:01:46.30 Now I love again, Paul we talked about him in prayer. 00:02:06.65\00:02:10.79 Here he is expanding on his prayers, the things that he 00:02:10.79\00:02:14.00 mentions earlier in his prayers, specifically in chapter 00:02:14.00\00:02:17.23 3:11-13, we now see him starting to talk to the 00:02:17.23\00:02:20.47 Thessalonians about, share with us a little about that. 00:02:20.47\00:02:22.54 Well one thing I like here as he is talking 00:02:22.54\00:02:25.84 about more and more, where they are is good, 00:02:25.84\00:02:31.18 but he wants them to keep growing and this is a phrase 00:02:31.18\00:02:33.65 he will say over and over again, I want you to do what 00:02:33.65\00:02:36.05 you're doing more and more. 00:02:36.05\00:02:37.65 Their deficit is not so much that they are doing bad 00:02:37.65\00:02:41.52 things, their deficit is that they need to keep growing. 00:02:41.52\00:02:45.39 They have made a start, it's a good start and they need 00:02:45.39\00:02:48.80 to keep growing, and that is a major concern 00:02:48.80\00:02:51.93 that he has here. 00:02:51.93\00:02:53.13 In this verse he is kind of picking up on what he said in 00:02:53.13\00:02:57.54 chapter 3, especially the prayer at the end of chapter 3. 00:02:57.54\00:03:01.81 In the Greek language there is four major words in that prayer 00:03:01.81\00:03:06.51 of chapter 3, and that is the words abounding, holiness, 00:03:06.51\00:03:11.72 love, and then reference to the second coming, 00:03:11.72\00:03:16.02 the return of Jesus. 00:03:16.02\00:03:17.43 As you go through chapter 4 you see he is taking up each 00:03:17.43\00:03:21.00 of those issues that he mentioned in that prayer at 00:03:21.00\00:03:23.90 the end of chapter 3. 00:03:23.90\00:03:25.53 So Paul here is very structured, very organized 00:03:25.53\00:03:30.51 and we might miss it, that is why we use a variety of 00:03:30.51\00:03:33.64 translations in this program, and in Thessalonians itself 00:03:33.64\00:03:37.85 I use the translation that I made directly from the Greek 00:03:37.85\00:03:41.78 where we can pick up on some of those connections that are 00:03:41.78\00:03:45.69 there in the text. 00:03:45.69\00:03:46.82 I love again, how Paul truly his prayer life is a part 00:03:46.82\00:03:51.26 of how he processes life day to day. 00:03:51.26\00:03:53.90 Unfortunately I think sometimes, for us as Christians, 00:03:53.90\00:03:57.23 prayer is this thing that is kind of a last resort. 00:03:57.23\00:04:00.14 You know we can kind of live our life and 00:04:00.14\00:04:03.00 then we get in a bind, then we go to prayer. 00:04:03.00\00:04:05.44 Lord help me, Lord figure this out, Lord get me out of this, 00:04:05.44\00:04:08.71 but Paul wasn't that way, sure he talked to God, I'm sure 00:04:08.71\00:04:11.95 when he was in prison they prayed and sang hymns. 00:04:11.95\00:04:14.28 But he processed everything with his relationships and 00:04:14.28\00:04:18.59 it was just the way he processed life. 00:04:18.59\00:04:20.59 Prayer was his life, it wasn't a thing of last resort. 00:04:20.59\00:04:24.23 I love seeing that again here in 1 Thessalonians. 00:04:24.23\00:04:26.06 In a world that is dizzy in its distractions, it's 00:04:26.06\00:04:30.07 important to be reminded of that prayer. 00:04:30.07\00:04:31.90 It is the place where we can do the worrying, if you wish. 00:04:31.90\00:04:35.57 We all tend to worry about a lot of stuff, why don't you 00:04:35.57\00:04:39.21 take your worries right to the throne of God? 00:04:39.21\00:04:41.04 It would be embarrassing to do that, but it can help you 00:04:41.04\00:04:44.05 process them. - and He can handle them. 00:04:44.05\00:04:46.58 Yeah, He could handle it, and one other thing in verse 2 00:04:46.58\00:04:49.42 I want to mention is, he said, we gave you instructions 00:04:49.42\00:04:52.15 through the Lord Jesus. 00:04:52.15\00:04:55.26 Now as scholars have studied 1 Thessalonians carefully 00:04:55.26\00:04:58.63 they have noticed in chapters 4 and 5 of 1 Thessalonians there 00:04:58.63\00:05:04.13 are multiple references to the sayings of Jesus. 00:05:04.13\00:05:07.57 He mentions it only twice directly in 00:05:07.57\00:05:10.77 verse 1 of chapter 4 and verse 15 of chapter 4. 00:05:10.77\00:05:13.91 He mentions that it is Jesus instructions that he is 00:05:13.91\00:05:17.38 getting into here, but there is probably 20 or so 00:05:17.38\00:05:21.55 illusions, words, phrases, sentences, that echo 00:05:21.55\00:05:25.69 the sayings of Jesus. 00:05:25.69\00:05:27.89 Now this wouldn't be remarkable to us except you don't 00:05:27.89\00:05:29.86 find that normally in Paul. 00:05:29.86\00:05:31.73 This is a collection that stands out from 00:05:31.73\00:05:35.73 its absence in other places. 00:05:35.73\00:05:37.70 - Okay! - so I think when he says through the Lord Jesus, 00:05:37.70\00:05:40.50 he is saying, Paul just didn't give them his own ideas 00:05:40.50\00:05:43.57 but he was giving them the tradition that he got from 00:05:43.57\00:05:47.01 Jesus, the actual words and actions and sayings of Jesus. 00:05:47.01\00:05:51.88 And that is so crucial, it can be easy I think sometimes 00:05:51.88\00:05:56.69 to make disciples of us, if you will. 00:05:56.69\00:05:59.75 You know, but here Paul again keeping the words of Jesus 00:05:59.75\00:06:04.89 in a sense, before them. 00:06:04.89\00:06:06.90 That is so important for us to do when we think, I mean 00:06:06.90\00:06:09.73 the great commission is go make disciples. 00:06:09.73\00:06:11.80 Well make disciples of Jesus Christ. 00:06:11.80\00:06:14.37 So we constantly, as we are in relationships with people, 00:06:14.37\00:06:17.64 have to constantly bring them before the words of Christ. 00:06:17.64\00:06:20.88 Help them to grow, get grounded, sit before Jesus. 00:06:20.88\00:06:24.68 I always loved the story of Mary and Martha. 00:06:24.68\00:06:26.25 Mary sitting before Jesus, and Jesus says Mary has chosen 00:06:26.25\00:06:29.58 the one thing that is important, to sit at My feet and 00:06:29.58\00:06:32.89 listen to Me, so consequently bringing people before the 00:06:32.89\00:06:35.86 feet of Jesus to listen to Him and take their direction 00:06:35.86\00:06:38.76 from Him is so important. 00:06:38.76\00:06:39.93 Making disciples of Jesus, not of anyone else but Jesus. 00:06:39.93\00:06:42.20 It is so important, it is so important. 00:06:42.20\00:06:44.10 Well let's get into verse 3, because verse 3 gets into 00:06:44.10\00:06:48.07 the part of this text that can be challenging I think. 00:06:48.07\00:06:51.97 Then and now, it says: 00:06:51.97\00:06:54.74 Let me just mention again this is my translation here! 00:06:57.05\00:06:59.45 In other words he defines holiness, in a sense, 00:07:10.49\00:07:13.60 as keeping away from sexual immorality. 00:07:13.60\00:07:17.17 This word holiness I think a lot of people struggle to 00:07:17.17\00:07:19.87 understand what that means. 00:07:19.87\00:07:21.34 What does that mean to you Jon? 00:07:21.34\00:07:22.74 Well you know it's always tough, what does that mean to 00:07:22.74\00:07:25.97 live a holy life? Are we talking perfection? 00:07:25.97\00:07:28.41 Are we talking that you have arrived? 00:07:28.41\00:07:30.71 Does it mean that you completely avoid living around 00:07:30.71\00:07:33.62 sinful people, I mean Jesus didn't do that? 00:07:33.62\00:07:35.88 He went to the sinners, He lived amongst them. 00:07:35.88\00:07:38.52 He got a bad reputation because He did that. 00:07:38.52\00:07:41.09 But you know I think this holiness talks about being 00:07:41.09\00:07:47.30 sanctified, by being set apart for. 00:07:47.30\00:07:49.23 There is something there about being set apart for God 00:07:49.23\00:07:52.57 and for His love. You know when someone gets married 00:07:52.57\00:07:55.84 they enter into this holy matrimony. 00:07:55.84\00:07:59.07 Their love, they are set apart to each other in that love. 00:07:59.07\00:08:01.68 But it calls us to certain behaviors on how we are going to 00:08:01.68\00:08:04.78 live in the world, and I think Paul is going to get very 00:08:04.78\00:08:07.82 specific about how we live in that holiness. 00:08:07.82\00:08:09.55 Maybe you can share a little about that from this text. 00:08:09.55\00:08:12.09 Yeah, well this word sexual immorality translates 00:08:12.09\00:08:15.86 a variety of ways. 00:08:15.86\00:08:16.99 In the Greek language is Pernanai. And that is where the 00:08:16.99\00:08:21.66 English word pornography comes from. 00:08:21.66\00:08:24.20 It is often used of prostitution and other elements 00:08:24.20\00:08:28.54 of the sexual immorality, so Paul is 00:08:28.54\00:08:30.97 getting very specific here. 00:08:30.97\00:08:33.31 He says if we want to be holy we need to avoid various 00:08:33.31\00:08:38.11 forms of sexual immorality. 00:08:38.11\00:08:40.45 And in today's world those can be public, 00:08:40.45\00:08:43.02 they can also be very private. 00:08:43.02\00:08:44.59 He says something interesting in the next verse that has 00:08:44.59\00:08:50.66 puzzled scholars for a long time. 00:08:50.66\00:08:52.59 He says, I've got the solution for you, acquire a vessel. 00:08:52.59\00:08:56.87 So let's read that verse and see what 00:08:56.87\00:09:00.27 he is getting at there: 00:09:00.27\00:09:01.57 So this is interesting, acquire a vessel. 00:09:18.72\00:09:21.76 What is that all about? 00:09:21.76\00:09:23.32 We will get into that in a minute, but here's the question 00:09:23.32\00:09:26.73 Paul is talking about sexual restraint in this passage. 00:09:26.73\00:09:29.83 That is not a popular message to a lot of people today. 00:09:29.83\00:09:32.97 It wasn't popular in the ancient world. 00:09:32.97\00:09:34.30 I think it is interesting that, it's the same thing today 00:09:34.30\00:09:39.67 people want to do what you want. 00:09:39.67\00:09:41.08 But the Cicero wrote something, let me read it to you. 00:09:41.08\00:09:44.51 He was a senator of the Roman empire around the time 00:09:44.51\00:09:47.88 Paul was writing, so this is current stuff. 00:09:47.88\00:09:50.09 He says, "if there's anyone who thinks that youth should be 00:09:50.09\00:09:54.49 "forbidden affairs, even with courtesans, he is doubtless 00:09:54.49\00:09:58.73 "animatedly austere, but his view is contrary not only to 00:09:58.73\00:10:01.90 "the license of this age, but also to the customs and 00:10:01.90\00:10:05.03 "concessions of our ancestors. For one it was not a common 00:10:05.03\00:10:08.97 "practice, one wasn't blamed, one wasn't forbidden." 00:10:08.97\00:10:11.94 So in the Roman empire people were free to do whatever 00:10:13.44\00:10:17.51 they wanted sexually and there was no restraint 00:10:17.51\00:10:21.92 whatsoever and yet Paul is giving a message that is 00:10:21.92\00:10:26.25 totally out of step with that. 00:10:26.25\00:10:27.52 It's a message that says lustful passion will not 00:10:27.52\00:10:32.86 admit of restraint, you see. 00:10:32.86\00:10:35.33 For the Christian this becomes a very, very important 00:10:35.33\00:10:40.14 issue and in this text he talks about acquiring a vessel. 00:10:40.14\00:10:44.87 We are not quite sure exactly that means. 00:10:44.87\00:10:48.14 But when you get into a little different there is 00:10:48.14\00:10:51.08 2 options here, one of them is get a wife. 00:10:51.08\00:10:54.02 - there you go. - Because you see the word vessel 00:10:54.02\00:10:56.92 in some places in the New Testament is used for the female 00:10:56.92\00:11:01.46 gender, so some people think acquire a vessel he must 00:11:01.46\00:11:05.19 be saying for the Christian, one way to deal with 00:11:05.19\00:11:09.13 sexual temptation is to get married and exercise it 00:11:09.13\00:11:13.07 lawfully in that context. 00:11:13.07\00:11:15.47 But the word acquire here, it's a normal word used for shopping 00:11:15.47\00:11:19.61 and things like that, this is what causes the problem. 00:11:19.61\00:11:23.98 That word also can be used in terms of control, you see. 00:11:23.98\00:11:28.32 If vessel means your body it is also a possibility, 00:11:28.32\00:11:32.45 then what he is saying is, control your body. 00:11:32.45\00:11:35.82 Keep things under control. 00:11:35.82\00:11:38.19 If that is what he is saying here, than he is saying, 00:11:38.19\00:11:41.80 holiness is all about avoiding sexual immorality and 00:11:41.80\00:11:45.53 maintaining control over your body and the actions 00:11:45.53\00:11:49.20 that your body takes. - okay. Wow! 00:11:49.20\00:11:53.07 Well that can be a tough thing, I mean the issue of self 00:11:53.07\00:11:57.38 control, that seems to be where the battle is. 00:11:57.38\00:12:01.02 I had a summer internship once, is that related to this? 00:12:01.02\00:12:04.89 Yeah you know during the summers I did internship 00:12:04.89\00:12:08.16 for a high school and college students. 00:12:08.16\00:12:10.33 We would constantly talk about God's desire for us to 00:12:10.33\00:12:15.20 be sanctified, to be set apart. 00:12:15.20\00:12:17.80 And the process of being sanctified, that you grow in God 00:12:17.80\00:12:22.27 sanctification, is not just when you say yes to Jesus. 00:12:22.27\00:12:26.27 I like to say when I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior, 00:12:26.27\00:12:29.68 that is the big yes, and then for the rest of my journey 00:12:29.68\00:12:33.05 with Jesus I keep saying these little yeses to Him. 00:12:33.05\00:12:35.22 Yes Lord, yes Lord, more of the setting apart, 00:12:35.22\00:12:38.65 falling deeper in love with Him, which impacts greatly 00:12:38.65\00:12:42.49 how I live in this world. 00:12:42.49\00:12:43.83 You know with Paul's words, don't be conformed to the 00:12:43.83\00:12:47.40 world but be transformed in the renewing of your mind. 00:12:47.40\00:12:50.80 I'm glad you brought that up, because the word for 00:12:50.80\00:12:54.44 holiness and sanctification is not an end result word. 00:12:54.44\00:12:58.04 It's a process word, in other words his goal is 00:12:58.04\00:13:02.11 sanctifying, it is a process of growing more and more. 00:13:02.11\00:13:05.45 People can get discouraged and say you got to be there, 00:13:05.45\00:13:08.75 no, just be in the process. 00:13:08.75\00:13:10.79 So how do you handle these issues with your kids 00:13:10.79\00:13:14.82 and stuff like that? 00:13:14.82\00:13:16.09 Well that is almost a whole episode by itself, 00:13:16.09\00:13:18.69 or a series if you will on that, but you know it is 00:13:18.69\00:13:22.50 a very real thing that we live in. 00:13:22.50\00:13:24.10 We have conversations constantly as we drive down the 00:13:24.10\00:13:27.30 road, or you walk into a convenience store and you have 00:13:27.30\00:13:30.31 all those magazines right in front of you and they are 00:13:30.31\00:13:33.48 looking at them going oh my goodness, these women dress 00:13:33.48\00:13:36.64 certain ways and all these different things. 00:13:36.64\00:13:37.95 We talk about how unfortunately in this society, sexuality 00:13:37.95\00:13:43.08 is like currency, it is how you sell things. 00:13:43.08\00:13:45.92 We talk about how God did not design as for that, 00:13:45.92\00:13:49.09 but for us to love one another in a way that is 00:13:49.09\00:13:52.26 beyond just the sexual. 00:13:52.26\00:13:53.96 So we have to process that very carefully. 00:13:53.96\00:13:57.57 You see commercials all the time for cars and different 00:13:57.57\00:14:00.10 things. We are going to take a break and we will talk 00:14:00.10\00:14:02.64 about that later. - alright! 00:14:02.64\00:14:17.65
