Welcome to Books of the Book where we are studying, 00:00:22.75\00:00:25.69 1 Thessalonians and I'm Pastor Jon Ciccarelli and 00:00:25.69\00:00:28.56 I'm joining Doctor Jon Paulien. 00:00:28.56\00:00:30.73 Jon here we are in 1 Thessalonians and it 00:00:30.73\00:00:34.30 has been a great study. 00:00:34.30\00:00:35.46 Why don't you take us where we want to go today? 00:00:35.46\00:00:38.13 Alright, our text for today begins with Chapter 2 and 00:00:38.13\00:00:42.14 verse 13 to the end of chapter 3. 00:00:42.14\00:00:45.21 I should probably mention that in Chapter 1, Paul is 00:00:45.21\00:00:49.28 focusing on his prayers for the Thessalonians. 00:00:49.28\00:00:52.45 The focus is on who they are and what God has been 00:00:52.45\00:00:55.55 doing in their lives. 00:00:55.55\00:00:56.65 In the first 12 verses of chapter 2, Paul switches the 00:00:56.65\00:01:01.22 focus to himself and his fellow apostles. 00:01:01.22\00:01:04.13 He gets into the motivations of why they are in ministry. 00:01:04.13\00:01:08.40 Its conclusion was basically there is two motivations. 00:01:08.40\00:01:12.63 One is pleasing God, and the other is his love 00:01:12.63\00:01:17.87 for the Thessalonians people. 00:01:17.87\00:01:19.84 So that brings us back to loving God and loving people 00:01:19.84\00:01:23.24 again, I remember you had a few things to say about that 00:01:23.24\00:01:26.61 from your sermon series. 00:01:26.61\00:01:28.25 Yeah, I love Paul and we have talked 00:01:28.25\00:01:31.35 about his authenticity before. 00:01:31.35\00:01:32.79 You really see his motivations for life, his love for God 00:01:32.79\00:01:37.69 is so obvious, his love for people, he describes himself 00:01:37.69\00:01:41.76 as sometimes as a father and sometimes as a mother in 00:01:41.76\00:01:45.87 how he cares for the Thessalonians. 00:01:45.87\00:01:48.54 Here we see, because often we will often hear well how do 00:01:48.54\00:01:51.94 you actually live these great commandments you just talked 00:01:51.94\00:01:54.78 about? Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, 00:01:54.78\00:01:57.21 soul, and strength and love your neighbor as yourself. 00:01:57.21\00:02:00.22 That's so difficult to do, and yet when we read Paul we see 00:02:00.22\00:02:03.18 what it looks like, this is what it looks like the love, 00:02:03.18\00:02:06.12 God and to love people. 00:02:06.12\00:02:08.19 So as we grow in that relationship with God in loving 00:02:08.19\00:02:13.63 people, we really focus on relationships. 00:02:13.63\00:02:16.90 Obviously relationship is big to God, He came to die for us 00:02:16.90\00:02:21.34 so we could be with Him for ever. 00:02:21.34\00:02:22.80 He also leads us into relation- ships with others and so in 00:02:22.80\00:02:27.64 this Society, this culture, I think one of the things 00:02:27.64\00:02:31.48 we wrestle with intention, everything is always about 00:02:31.48\00:02:35.32 productivity, produce, produce, produce. 00:02:35.32\00:02:37.39 Do more, do more, do better, do better. 00:02:37.39\00:02:39.39 Even in ministry! - Even in ministry and yet Paul, 00:02:39.39\00:02:42.86 in his ministry, was focused on relationships. 00:02:42.86\00:02:46.23 Relationships are so important, you know it is funny, 00:02:46.23\00:02:48.03 when I came to the Calimesa church, I have only been there 00:02:48.03\00:02:51.67 about two years now. 00:02:51.67\00:02:52.73 The church I was at before Calimesa, I was there for 00:02:52.73\00:02:55.67 17 years, I was there 11 years as an Associate and Youth 00:02:55.67\00:02:58.64 Pastor and six years as a senior Pastor. 00:02:58.64\00:03:00.98 The relationship was rich. 00:03:00.98\00:03:02.98 When I was interviewing at Calimesa, I asked the question. 00:03:02.98\00:03:05.81 I said, I said what are you really looking for in a Senior 00:03:05.81\00:03:08.75 Pastor? One gentleman on the search committee looked me 00:03:08.75\00:03:11.32 right in the eyes and said, we are looking for someone 00:03:11.32\00:03:13.82 who will be here 17 years. 00:03:13.82\00:03:15.56 They wanted relationship, and that is what I wanted 00:03:17.63\00:03:19.89 as well, and that is what Paul has here. 00:03:19.89\00:03:22.50 As we grow in our love for God, He will lead us deeper 00:03:22.50\00:03:25.30 into our love for others, it's just a natural thing. 00:03:25.30\00:03:28.14 It is part of that fruit, and we will focus more on 00:03:28.14\00:03:30.87 relationships and maybe not worry as much about productivity 00:03:30.87\00:03:33.88 Let God be the judge of the productivity. 00:03:33.88\00:03:36.14 Focus on loving God and loving others, and that is what 00:03:36.14\00:03:38.61 we see Paul doing. 00:03:38.61\00:03:39.88 Well this section we are looking at this time 2:13 going 00:03:39.88\00:03:44.42 all the way to Chapter 3:11-13. 00:03:44.42\00:03:47.22 Paul begins this section with a prayer, and he ends 00:03:47.22\00:03:50.99 this section with a prayer. 00:03:50.99\00:03:52.39 It seems whenever Paul is praying, he gets into 00:03:52.39\00:03:56.16 thankfulness and praise. 00:03:56.16\00:03:58.47 The two go together, and that is one of the amazing things. 00:03:58.47\00:04:01.40 Everywhere you go in 1 Thessalonians, - I don't think 00:04:01.40\00:04:04.84 you can't praise God when you're giving thanks. 00:04:04.84\00:04:06.88 When you realize how much you can be thankful for, 00:04:06.88\00:04:08.88 you just start praising Him. - That's right! 00:04:08.88\00:04:10.98 So it is about relationships, but it is also about 00:04:10.98\00:04:14.62 thankfulness and so on. 00:04:14.62\00:04:16.65 It seems that Paul used prayer to kind of process what 00:04:16.65\00:04:22.56 was going on in his life. 00:04:22.56\00:04:23.63 He didn't just let his mind spin, is it possible to 00:04:23.63\00:04:28.06 spin your wheel's in prayer? 00:04:28.06\00:04:29.66 Yes it is possible, I can testify and I think there is 00:04:29.66\00:04:35.00 a fine line when we are praying with God about what ever 00:04:35.00\00:04:40.28 it is we are talking about. 00:04:40.28\00:04:41.44 It could be fears, worries, anxieties, different things. 00:04:41.44\00:04:43.48 If we are not careful, instead of processing it with God it is 00:04:43.48\00:04:47.78 almost like we can begin to re- hearse our worries and anxieties 00:04:47.78\00:04:52.09 You know, over and over and get into that type of a cycle. 00:04:52.09\00:04:55.49 But what I love about Paul, is that he really processes 00:04:55.49\00:04:58.86 his life with prayer. 00:04:58.86\00:05:01.00 And when he processes it, he is not just thinking about it, 00:05:01.00\00:05:04.90 not just thoughts, he's really talking with God about it. 00:05:04.90\00:05:08.77 He releases them to God, he is with God in the experience 00:05:08.77\00:05:12.84 with the people and I think that is so important for us. 00:05:12.84\00:05:16.78 When we are praying with God, not to just get in and kind 00:05:16.78\00:05:19.88 of let the wheel spin about whatever we are anxious about, 00:05:19.88\00:05:22.95 or worried about, but really just be with God in it. 00:05:22.95\00:05:26.15 Process it with God, let Him have it, surrender it 00:05:26.15\00:05:28.82 and think about what He has said about those things in 00:05:28.82\00:05:31.46 His word, and we can think about those things. 00:05:31.46\00:05:32.93 Really process it with God. So I love that about Paul. 00:05:32.93\00:05:36.63 He process life with his prayers. 00:05:36.63\00:05:39.30 He has habits too come he is intentional about those 00:05:39.30\00:05:43.07 things and I think it is important for us to be habitual, 00:05:43.07\00:05:46.88 if you will, or you mention thankfulness in our prayers 00:05:46.88\00:05:50.68 and in our praise. 00:05:50.68\00:05:52.48 The word discipline, we often think of that in a negative 00:05:52.48\00:05:55.92 context, but think about the athletes that we admire. 00:05:55.92\00:05:59.62 They are very disciplined people, and at the root of the 00:05:59.62\00:06:03.29 word discipline, is the word disciple. 00:06:03.29\00:06:05.16 To be a disciple of Jesus means that there is a discipline 00:06:05.16\00:06:09.10 involved about being inten- tional, about the things that 00:06:09.10\00:06:13.03 God asks us to be intentional about. 00:06:13.03\00:06:14.44 That includes being thankful, Scripture says later on 00:06:14.44\00:06:17.51 that is God's will for us, is to be thankful and to pray 00:06:17.51\00:06:20.54 continually and so forth. 00:06:20.54\00:06:21.71 So there is a habit, there is that intentionality and we 00:06:21.71\00:06:24.75 see it with Paul definitely. 00:06:24.75\00:06:26.58 That is a great leading to the text. 1 Thessalonians 2:13. 00:06:26.58\00:06:30.65 And I will mention once more that the translation from 00:06:30.65\00:06:34.86 Thessalonians are my own intended sometime to bring out 00:06:34.86\00:06:38.59 the grammar of the Greek, more than to be good solid 00:06:38.59\00:06:42.46 English so you can see some of the dynamics that are 00:06:42.46\00:06:46.33 going on in the text. 00:06:46.33\00:06:47.77 You know this I think has great impact for how we read 00:07:10.69\00:07:14.60 the Bible, we need to understand this is not just ink 00:07:14.60\00:07:18.47 on a page, the Bible is the very words of God. 00:07:18.47\00:07:22.00 It is designed for us to give us guidance from life in a 00:07:22.00\00:07:25.97 way perhaps nothing else possibly could. 00:07:25.97\00:07:29.44 Why don't we go on and read verses 14-16? 00:07:29.44\00:07:32.08 These are kind of challenging verses, 00:07:32.08\00:07:34.65 they're troubled some people. 00:07:34.65\00:07:36.15 Jon, I feel a little uncomfortable with this so maybe 00:08:10.39\00:08:13.96 you can help us unpack this. 00:08:13.96\00:08:15.79 It has troubled a lot of people through the years. 00:08:15.79\00:08:18.19 It is possible to read this passage in a way that would 00:08:18.19\00:08:21.23 make the Nazis proud. 00:08:21.23\00:08:22.46 I think we have to take a careful look at it and 00:08:22.46\00:08:26.53 understand a couple of things. 00:08:26.53\00:08:28.00 First of all the location starts out with Judea. 00:08:28.00\00:08:30.67 In the Greek language the word for Jews and the word for 00:08:30.67\00:08:34.61 Judeans is basically the same. 00:08:34.61\00:08:37.55 So what I think is happening here is Paul is focusing 00:08:37.55\00:08:41.78 particularly on the ruling council. 00:08:41.78\00:08:44.29 Now he was one of them, the Sanhedrin because it was the 00:08:44.29\00:08:48.49 ruling council that killed Jesus and it seems from this text 00:08:48.49\00:08:52.63 that the ruling council was following Paul around. 00:08:52.63\00:08:55.86 They were sending represent- atives who were following 00:08:55.86\00:08:59.13 him around and causing trouble it seems 00:08:59.13\00:09:01.37 almost wherever he went. 00:09:01.37\00:09:03.64 In the Gospel of John, the Jews doesn't mean all Jews. 00:09:03.64\00:09:08.31 Paul is a Jew, there are many Jews following Jesus 00:09:08.31\00:09:12.91 so this is not a blanket that covers every Jew, 00:09:12.91\00:09:16.45 but rather in the Gospel of John, the Jews was the 00:09:16.45\00:09:19.95 ruling authority in particular. 00:09:19.95\00:09:22.29 I think when we understand the text in this way, 00:09:22.29\00:09:24.39 Paul is frustrated about some people who not only killed 00:09:24.39\00:09:27.93 Jesus, they are following him around and causing trouble 00:09:27.93\00:09:31.40 where ever they go for malicious purposes. 00:09:31.40\00:09:34.97 I think that helps us understand what is going on in this text. 00:09:34.97\00:09:38.81 Is it possible sometimes our greatest opponents are those 00:09:38.81\00:09:42.54 who are closest, and Paul had been part of this very group. 00:09:42.54\00:09:47.32 It does seem to often, I think our greatest opponents can 00:09:47.32\00:09:52.02 be those that are closest to us. 00:09:52.02\00:09:53.52 And maybe that is also because there's heartstrings 00:09:53.52\00:09:57.13 attached, things that can really get down deep under us. 00:09:57.13\00:10:02.26 It is often the case, it seems like. 00:10:02.26\00:10:05.43 We find that in church too, you know. 00:10:05.43\00:10:08.57 Sometimes, within the church, even though we love each 00:10:08.57\00:10:11.57 other and we are with God, we can get into fights. 00:10:11.57\00:10:14.54 There can be disruptions, it always seems it's often been 00:10:14.54\00:10:18.85 close to home where some of our greatest opponents can be. 00:10:18.85\00:10:23.12 God wants to change that. 00:10:23.12\00:10:25.05 Let's say you are a group of people in church, and someone 00:10:25.05\00:10:28.72 makes a derogatory comment about Jews or Muslims or 00:10:28.72\00:10:32.63 blacks, or something, how do you handle that? 00:10:32.63\00:10:34.73 Well I think it is very important, especially looking at 00:10:34.73\00:10:38.83 this text for example. 00:10:38.83\00:10:40.14 Not to make a blanket statement about somebody in that. 00:10:40.14\00:10:45.01 For instant you wouldn't want to say with this, 00:10:45.01\00:10:47.78 this is speaking about all Jews. 00:10:47.78\00:10:49.51 Look at the horrible thing at the Holocaust, just looking 00:10:49.51\00:10:52.35 at that, we just can't do that. 00:10:52.35\00:10:55.68 We have to always again to seek to understand instead of 00:10:55.68\00:10:59.09 being understood, we have to seek to understand people 00:10:59.09\00:11:02.49 and to be with them, we have to understand them. 00:11:02.49\00:11:06.33 So when someone makes those blanket statements, say wait, 00:11:06.33\00:11:09.36 wait, wait a minute, this is not the way God calls people. 00:11:09.36\00:11:12.17 Because someone could make a derogatory statement about 00:11:12.17\00:11:14.90 your ethnic group too. - Exactly! 00:11:14.90\00:11:16.71 Or your religion or so on, everybody is like that. 00:11:16.71\00:11:20.08 Always and everybody are not good words to use. 00:11:20.08\00:11:23.35 In every group, in every ethnic group, in every religious 00:11:23.35\00:11:26.21 faith there are people that are tuned into God, and there 00:11:26.21\00:11:29.15 are people that are sliding away and it is not ours to 00:11:29.15\00:11:32.09 judge, it is God's to judge. 00:11:32.09\00:11:34.19 Well looking at the broader picture and moving ahead 00:11:34.19\00:11:38.09 we see Paul sending Timothy. 00:11:38.09\00:11:41.76 He sends Timothy to encourage them. 00:11:41.76\00:11:46.37 Is there a need for encouragement in the church? 00:11:46.37\00:11:50.14 Is there ever. Encouragement for everybody, 00:11:50.14\00:11:53.74 Pastors included, we can all use more encouragement. 00:11:53.74\00:11:57.28 You know this life is hard, this life we are getting beat 00:11:57.28\00:12:02.22 up everywhere you go, at the job, when you go to school, 00:12:02.22\00:12:06.15 even when you just drive down the road and you look at 00:12:06.15\00:12:09.32 the billboards you get beat up, you're not good enough, 00:12:09.32\00:12:12.06 you're not smart enough, you don't have enough money 00:12:12.06\00:12:14.73 or whatever it is. 00:12:14.73\00:12:15.86 The society out there is not real conducive to 00:12:15.86\00:12:19.27 encouragement sometimes, and in the church this ought 00:12:19.27\00:12:21.84 really be the place where we are getting built up. 00:12:21.84\00:12:25.04 I think of the Barnabas who came along side of Paul 00:12:25.04\00:12:28.24 when others were afraid of him. 00:12:28.24\00:12:29.81 He is the one who brought them in, the son of encouragement. 00:12:29.81\00:12:32.65 Barnabas means son of encouragement, I noticed in our 00:12:32.65\00:12:35.82 Calimesa church we have Pastor appreciation month. 00:12:35.82\00:12:38.95 How does that feel? - It feels really good. 00:12:38.95\00:12:42.16 They take time to really take time to say, 00:12:42.16\00:12:45.36 we really appreciate you. 00:12:45.36\00:12:46.59 11 challenging months. - that is right. 00:12:46.59\00:12:48.06 One month of encouragement can get you through a lot. 00:12:48.06\00:12:51.00 Give us a little summary of Paul's emotions as 00:12:51.00\00:12:54.90 he goes through Chapter 3. 00:12:54.90\00:12:56.71 We have talked about it before, but we can make it pretty quick. 00:12:56.71\00:12:59.71 I think, again I love Paul's authenticity as transparency. 00:12:59.71\00:13:04.81 He says, my heart is just breaking, I am longing to see 00:13:04.81\00:13:09.88 you, it's like I've been orphaned from you. 00:13:09.88\00:13:11.95 I almost can't endure, I'm under distress and I just might not be 00:13:11.95\00:13:16.42 able to go on living. It's almost funny to read. 00:13:16.42\00:13:19.29 But we really see his attachment to the Thessalonians here. 00:13:19.29\00:13:22.63 He kind of sums up in 3:12 where he says, 00:13:22.63\00:13:27.97 He is praying that their love will increase for each other 00:13:40.58\00:13:43.89 but also for people outside. 00:13:43.89\00:13:45.92 He is concerned that this kind of relationship they have, 00:13:45.92\00:13:50.73 the feelings they have will be expanded throughout all 00:13:50.73\00:13:55.46 the work that they do. 00:13:55.46\00:13:56.67 That brings us up to a time for break and we will be back 00:13:56.67\00:13:59.83 with you in just a moment. 00:13:59.83\00:14:00.87
