Hi and welcome back to Books of the Book where 00:00:00.96\00:00:03.20 we are studying 1 Thessalonians. 00:00:03.20\00:00:04.80 We are going to pick it up now Jon, with verse 5. 00:00:04.80\00:00:07.04 Let me read that for us. 00:00:07.04\00:00:08.77 Alright, so he here, he is giving reasons why he is 00:00:23.95\00:00:27.66 thankful, as I mentioned previously this is all one 00:00:27.66\00:00:31.53 sentence and he is thankful, that is the main sense. 00:00:31.53\00:00:34.66 I give thanks, I give thanks for all these things. 00:00:34.66\00:00:38.33 One of them is that the gospel did not come to them in 00:00:38.33\00:00:41.97 Word only, but in power and the Holy Spirit 00:00:41.97\00:00:45.41 with much certainty. 00:00:45.41\00:00:48.01 So Paul can see when they received the Gospel 00:00:48.01\00:00:50.78 they were changed people. - Yeah! 00:00:50.78\00:00:53.01 The Gospel is not changed, the Gospel is what God has 00:00:53.01\00:00:56.25 done, what Christ has done. 00:00:56.25\00:00:57.49 But change in our lives is evidence that God is 00:00:57.49\00:01:00.69 working and so he saw outward evidences that they had 00:01:00.69\00:01:07.23 power they didn't have before. 00:01:07.23\00:01:09.16 Inward evidences, there was certainty, they had and an 00:01:09.16\00:01:13.17 assurance, a confidence that they didn't have before. 00:01:13.17\00:01:17.21 So there was outward and inward evidence in their lives. 00:01:17.21\00:01:20.74 That is often how you can see God is working in someone's 00:01:20.74\00:01:24.15 life, you see the fruit, the Bible calls it the fruit of 00:01:24.15\00:01:27.52 the Holy Spirit, that love and patience, kindness 00:01:27.52\00:01:31.19 gentleness, I mean there is a whole list of them there. 00:01:31.19\00:01:34.69 Jesus Himself said, a good tree produces good fruit, 00:01:34.69\00:01:38.16 inside and out. 00:01:38.16\00:01:40.00 Well what better evidence do you have that God is working 00:01:40.00\00:01:43.00 in your life then love, peace, patience, long- 00:01:43.00\00:01:49.87 suffering, and stuff like that. 00:01:49.87\00:01:51.31 That is not normal for human beings, it isn't natural, 00:01:51.31\00:01:55.61 it doesn't come easy for us. 00:01:55.61\00:01:57.35 When that happens in our lives it is a miracle of God. 00:01:57.35\00:02:01.28 Paul was observing those miracles going on, and I want to 00:02:01.28\00:02:05.02 point out one word toward the end that it isn't usually 00:02:05.02\00:02:08.92 translated this way, but in the last line of verse five, 00:02:08.92\00:02:13.43 it says, "just as you know what we became among you for 00:02:13.43\00:02:17.53 your sakes. " Now usually that is translated, what we were 00:02:17.53\00:02:21.97 among you, but you see English has a difference between is 00:02:21.97\00:02:26.37 and become. - Okay! 00:02:26.37\00:02:29.61 Greek has a difference too, emi and getomi. 00:02:29.61\00:02:32.91 Paul here doesn't use the normal word for just being. 00:02:32.91\00:02:36.48 It is the word for becoming. 00:02:36.48\00:02:38.92 So he is emphasizing over and over, it occurs five or six 00:02:38.92\00:02:43.32 times in his first two chapters about becoming, becoming. 00:02:43.32\00:02:47.66 There was a transformation, there was a change, things 00:02:47.66\00:02:52.03 were moving in the Thessalonians 00:02:52.03\00:02:54.00 It must've been an unusual church, Paul is so excited by 00:02:54.00\00:02:57.07 this and maybe this is an experience he didn't often have 00:02:57.07\00:03:00.88 in his preaching of how people's lives were transformed 00:03:00.88\00:03:05.05 in this way and we want to emphasize that word became. 00:03:05.05\00:03:08.78 That is why in my translation I bring out that nuance 00:03:08.78\00:03:12.05 over and over again and you'll see it again in verse six 00:03:12.05\00:03:15.32 as well. - I think that is so important Jon. 00:03:15.32\00:03:18.33 Because often times we think of I accept Christ and now 00:03:18.33\00:03:22.73 I am. - yeah. - becoming is so important and I try to 00:03:22.73\00:03:26.70 remind people of this all the time, and my wife tries to 00:03:26.70\00:03:29.94 remind me of this about myself because I can be hard on 00:03:29.94\00:03:33.14 myself to expecting to be at a certain place and 00:03:33.14\00:03:35.91 she reminds me and I try to remind others that we are 00:03:35.91\00:03:38.21 becoming, we are growing, we are in the process. 00:03:38.21\00:03:40.15 I think this is a huge call to veteran Christians, if 00:03:40.15\00:03:44.39 you will, within the church to live that life before 00:03:44.39\00:03:48.59 the younger generations as well. 00:03:48.59\00:03:50.69 Veteran Christians? - yes those who have been walking with Jesus 00:03:50.69\00:03:53.36 for a long time to show and say we are all in a process, 00:03:53.36\00:03:57.30 we are all growing, and that also means being vulnerable. 00:03:57.30\00:04:01.24 You talked about before, real love is also being 00:04:01.24\00:04:04.41 vulnerable, being able to ask for forgiveness. 00:04:04.41\00:04:07.74 One of the things of being a parent, now a veteran 00:04:07.74\00:04:11.71 parents 12 years is we had to learn a lot of humility. 00:04:11.71\00:04:15.48 There are times when I had to say to my own kids when 00:04:15.48\00:04:19.09 I have blown it, to say, maybe one of my children 00:04:19.09\00:04:21.86 didn't do something they were supposed to do and 00:04:21.86\00:04:24.63 I reacted in the wrong way. 00:04:24.63\00:04:26.73 Maybe in anger, you don't always have to respond in anger 00:04:26.73\00:04:29.83 to correct somebody and I hate to admit too often, 00:04:29.83\00:04:33.70 more than I would like to admit, I've had to go to my son 00:04:33.70\00:04:36.44 and daughter and say, you know what? What you did was not 00:04:36.44\00:04:39.17 right, but the way I reacted was not right. 00:04:39.17\00:04:41.54 I did not need to react that way, would you forgive me? 00:04:41.54\00:04:44.21 I confess that to them and think that is what can be done 00:04:44.21\00:04:46.85 in the church as well. 00:04:46.85\00:04:48.05 But to live that out, and to see that we are also becoming 00:04:48.05\00:04:50.99 and that we are growing, so it is essential. 00:04:50.99\00:04:53.12 I have had so many parents come to me and say my children 00:04:53.12\00:04:55.99 aren't in the church and it breaks my heart, what do I do? 00:04:55.99\00:04:58.86 Once I know the situation, and almost every time the 00:04:58.86\00:05:02.20 appropriate answer is well an apology would be a good 00:05:02.20\00:05:05.57 start, because kids are growing, their forming, 00:05:05.57\00:05:08.90 they don't just leave the church because one day 00:05:08.90\00:05:12.24 they decide to leave the church. 00:05:12.24\00:05:13.58 They are usually leaving because they don't see the model 00:05:13.58\00:05:17.95 that they are looking for. 00:05:17.95\00:05:19.11 Paul gets into this, and in the very next couple verses. 00:05:19.11\00:05:22.32 Let's look at that and verses 6 and 7, 00:05:22.32\00:05:25.45 You know we often say, and I think it is absolutely right, 00:05:44.07\00:05:47.81 that only Christ should be imitated. 00:05:47.81\00:05:50.55 If you imitate a human being they are likely to lead you 00:05:50.55\00:05:55.78 astray, but the reality is people will imitate us and it 00:05:55.78\00:06:00.16 is important as veteran Christians, it is important that 00:06:00.16\00:06:04.79 we not just talk the talk, but walk the walk, you see. 00:06:04.79\00:06:09.76 They will model Christianity on us more when we confess 00:06:09.76\00:06:14.70 our sins, when we show a vulnerability then 00:06:14.70\00:06:17.94 when we act so perfect. 00:06:17.94\00:06:20.28 I once was a leader of a youth group and asked the youth 00:06:20.28\00:06:24.81 what is it? What is the one thing that would prevent you 00:06:24.81\00:06:29.28 from staying a Christian when you grow up? 00:06:29.28\00:06:31.69 Do you know what they answered that, several different 00:06:31.69\00:06:34.32 kids answered the same thing. 00:06:34.32\00:06:37.16 They said people who act as if they have no problems. 00:06:37.16\00:06:41.20 They could see there were problems in the church, and they 00:06:41.20\00:06:44.30 can also see the people were not willing to confess those. 00:06:44.30\00:06:48.50 That imitation was very discouraging to the young people 00:06:48.50\00:06:53.68 So Paul is saying look, imitate Christ, but if you have 00:06:53.68\00:06:57.28 never seen, heard, or touched Him, it almost inevitable 00:06:57.28\00:07:00.72 you will probably fix on some human being to imitate. 00:07:00.72\00:07:04.05 We need to realize, if we are veteran Christians that human 00:07:04.05\00:07:07.09 being is us, there is going to be somebody who is looking at us 00:07:07.09\00:07:10.89 and modeling us so in our lives we want to be sure 00:07:10.89\00:07:14.56 we don't just talk, but we also walk, that we practice 00:07:14.56\00:07:18.17 the things that we are preaching. - Umhumm! 00:07:18.17\00:07:21.70 I've had some role models in my past experience, maybe 00:07:21.70\00:07:26.01 a dozen that I could name, just various people who at 00:07:26.01\00:07:29.98 various times in my life plugged one thing into place. 00:07:29.98\00:07:33.42 I picked up this from that one, and this from that one, 00:07:33.42\00:07:36.85 and this from that one. 00:07:36.85\00:07:38.35 It's part of growing, it's part of becoming. - Yeah! 00:07:38.35\00:07:42.02 Paul touches on that here in these verses. 00:07:42.02\00:07:45.23 Yeah, it is scary to think about actually being someone 00:07:45.23\00:07:48.76 that someone maybe is going to imitate, but that is also 00:07:48.76\00:07:52.37 what God has called us to do as we grow in Him. 00:07:52.37\00:07:55.00 Making disciples, you know we've reference that before. 00:07:55.00\00:07:58.61 There is imitating, that part of growing, there is 00:07:58.61\00:08:01.44 a statement, I don't remember where I heard it. 00:08:01.44\00:08:04.18 But it is great. It says we teach what we know, but we 00:08:04.18\00:08:07.12 reproduce who we are. - Oww, that's good! 00:08:07.12\00:08:10.09 That is so true, and that is why we can say one thing 00:08:10.09\00:08:13.22 but if we are not living it, we are going to reproduce 00:08:13.22\00:08:16.32 who we are often in times. 00:08:16.32\00:08:18.39 So it is important that that we. - so if my kids look 00:08:18.39\00:08:21.03 a lot like me, it is my fault? - Or your joy. 00:08:21.03\00:08:24.73 - Or my joy. - that is right, that is right! 00:08:24.73\00:08:28.37 Now if you don't like where your kids are heading 00:08:28.37\00:08:30.47 take a good look in the mirror perhaps. 00:08:30.47\00:08:32.07 If you do like where your kids are heading, 00:08:32.07\00:08:33.64 praise the Lord. - that is right, that is right. 00:08:33.64\00:08:36.24 Well do you want to move on to verses 8 and 10 here? 00:08:36.24\00:08:38.81 Why don't we. - Let's do that. 00:08:38.81\00:08:40.22 The Thessalonians must've been amazing. 00:09:08.61\00:09:11.78 A really great church. - amazing, he is three weeks 00:09:11.78\00:09:15.25 with them and somehow something happens in such a way 00:09:15.25\00:09:18.82 they are fired up and talking about it everywhere. 00:09:18.82\00:09:22.52 Paul is saying he has been to Berea and to Athens and 00:09:22.52\00:09:26.73 to Corinth and in all of these places people are talking 00:09:26.73\00:09:30.83 about what has happening back in Thessalonica. 00:09:30.83\00:09:33.37 That's what he's telling us here, so this was really 00:09:33.37\00:09:37.47 a special church, some really special things were taking 00:09:37.47\00:09:41.54 place and Paul is excited about it, and at the end of 00:09:41.54\00:09:45.95 this verse, verse 10 they were waiting His Son from 00:09:45.95\00:09:50.32 heaven. Part of his faith that was really important to 00:09:50.32\00:09:53.89 Paul among the Thessalonians was that focus on the 00:09:53.89\00:09:57.19 second coming, the focus on the return of Jesus. 00:09:57.19\00:10:00.03 They are walking with Jesus now, they are looking 00:10:00.03\00:10:03.20 forward to being with Him in person in the future. 00:10:03.20\00:10:07.37 So the Thessalonians are kind of remarkable, because 00:10:07.37\00:10:11.17 when you think of the ancient Greek world, the ancient 00:10:11.17\00:10:14.98 Greek world didn't believe in resurrection. 00:10:14.98\00:10:16.91 According to the Greeks it didn't happen, there was no 00:10:16.91\00:10:20.35 such thing, if there was an afterlife, and Plato came up 00:10:20.35\00:10:24.12 with this idea, if there's an afterlife its some bodiless, 00:10:24.12\00:10:28.22 ghostly existence that I'm not sure anyone would really 00:10:28.22\00:10:32.76 want, and so to come with a message of resurrection, 00:10:32.76\00:10:37.63 that the dead can be raised in bodies and special 00:10:37.63\00:10:42.47 heavenly bodies, with new powers that are totally foreign. 00:10:42.47\00:10:46.57 It is a crazy message to talk about raising someone 00:10:46.57\00:10:49.54 from the dead. 00:10:49.54\00:10:50.88 I just did a study of a whole bunch of Greek works on the 00:10:50.88\00:10:53.55 resurrection of the dead, so this is fresh in my mind. 00:10:53.55\00:10:56.95 They did not buy it, so right from the start you are 00:10:56.95\00:10:59.69 bringing them a message that they know is false. 00:10:59.69\00:11:03.53 Not only that, it was a crazy Jewish message. 00:11:03.53\00:11:07.30 So you have all these Gentiles Thessalonians getting 00:11:07.30\00:11:10.57 excited about a message that you would never expect 00:11:10.57\00:11:13.87 them to get excited about. 00:11:13.87\00:11:15.64 So Paul is thrilled and excited and he praises 00:11:15.64\00:11:20.11 God for all of this. 00:11:20.11\00:11:22.88 So we have been talking about becoming, and that gives me 00:11:22.88\00:11:27.38 a chance maybe to talk about stages of Faith just briefly 00:11:27.38\00:11:31.52 here, because people grow through various stages in life. 00:11:31.52\00:11:35.19 The first stage is where you get acquainted with God. 00:11:35.19\00:11:38.79 The second stage is where you become a disciple, 00:11:38.79\00:11:42.50 you attach yourself, imitate someone. 00:11:42.50\00:11:44.63 The third stage is when you become a leader and other 00:11:44.63\00:11:48.10 people imitate you, you see the Thessalonians they have 00:11:48.10\00:11:51.24 gone through all three stages that often takes decades 00:11:51.24\00:11:54.01 for people, they have gone through all three stages. 00:11:54.01\00:11:56.75 But then there is something else that happens, 00:11:56.75\00:11:59.88 when you are successful, when you are following God and 00:11:59.88\00:12:03.49 people are admiring what you do for God, often there 00:12:03.49\00:12:06.45 comes something we call a dark night of the soul. 00:12:06.45\00:12:09.42 The Thessalonians had that too. 00:12:09.42\00:12:11.76 The dark night is when suffering comes, when persecution 00:12:11.76\00:12:15.26 comes, when trouble comes, when inner turmoil happens. 00:12:15.26\00:12:18.73 We may at that time think God is abandoning us. 00:12:18.73\00:12:22.87 You may be going through a dark night right now and feel 00:12:22.87\00:12:26.81 like God is abandoning you, but it is a normal part of 00:12:26.81\00:12:30.75 a healthy growing Christian experience. 00:12:30.75\00:12:33.72 What it does is it weans away the pride, it pulls you 00:12:33.72\00:12:37.89 away from those things which holds you back and allows 00:12:37.89\00:12:42.06 you to serve God in a more selfless manner. 00:12:42.06\00:12:45.53 So growth will come through hard times, it did for the 00:12:45.53\00:12:50.07 Thessalonians, and it will for us. 00:12:50.07\00:12:51.67 We don't need to be frustrated about that because in the 00:12:51.67\00:12:55.37 end, what we have gone through those difficult times, 00:12:55.37\00:13:00.14 and when we come more solely focused on God, then we can 00:13:00.14\00:13:04.18 come closer and closer to the Spirit and the character 00:13:04.18\00:13:08.18 Jesus who loved others because God loved them. 00:13:08.18\00:13:12.09 It didn't matter if they were nice, it did not matter if 00:13:12.09\00:13:14.99 they were friendly, He loved them because 00:13:14.99\00:13:16.79 they were souls that God loved. 00:13:16.79\00:13:18.96 Well we can see from Paul's writings that he had a lot 00:13:18.96\00:13:23.53 to be thankful about. - Yes! 00:13:23.53\00:13:24.93 There was a lot of fruit in their life of what God was 00:13:24.93\00:13:27.80 doing through the word that He gave them. 00:13:27.80\00:13:30.87 So we are happy that we could look at this section of 00:13:30.87\00:13:35.58 Scripture, that we can be thankful all the time and 00:13:35.58\00:13:40.28 keep growing in God's Word. God bless you! 00:13:40.28\00:13:42.92
