Welcome to Books of the Book, and in this particular 00:00:21.68\00:00:25.49 series we are studying the letters to the 00:00:25.49\00:00:28.32 Thessalonians by Paul. 00:00:28.32\00:00:30.39 I'm Jon Paulien and with me as my Pastor, Jon Ciccarelli. 00:00:30.39\00:00:34.46 Jon it is good to be with you again, as we now really start 00:00:34.46\00:00:38.47 getting into this study, we have looked at the 00:00:38.47\00:00:40.74 context so forth and the journeys that Paul has been on. 00:00:40.74\00:00:43.51 Now we are going to look at the letters that he actually 00:00:43.51\00:00:46.44 wrote the Thessalonians. 00:00:46.44\00:00:47.84 So today we are going to look specifically at verses 00:00:47.84\00:00:51.15 1 to 10 in Chapter 1 where Paul is writing to them and 00:00:51.15\00:00:54.62 telling them how joyful he is and thankful he is for them. 00:00:54.62\00:00:57.62 And the fruit of what God has been doing in their life 00:00:57.62\00:01:00.59 through God's Word in them. 00:01:00.59\00:01:02.32 Very good, so there is about 10 verses long and I should 00:01:02.32\00:01:07.60 mention that the translations of Thessalonians are my own. 00:01:07.60\00:01:12.17 The reason that I'm using this personal translation is 00:01:12.17\00:01:16.54 because I want to bring out some things that you can't 00:01:16.54\00:01:20.21 bring out in a normal Bible translation, the grammar of 00:01:20.21\00:01:24.28 the Greek, the meanings of words that might be missing 00:01:24.28\00:01:28.28 in a smoother type of English. 00:01:28.28\00:01:30.42 So sometimes the translation may be even a little bit 00:01:30.42\00:01:33.29 awkward, but we are giving that so that you can get 00:01:33.29\00:01:36.12 a little bit of the flavor of the Greek. 00:01:36.12\00:01:38.46 For example, verses 2 through 10 of 1 Thessalonians 1 00:01:38.46\00:01:42.73 is a single sentence in the Greek, 00:01:42.73\00:01:45.57 with only one main verb. 00:01:45.57\00:01:47.57 Now most translations don't show you that because it would 00:01:47.57\00:01:50.91 be too hard to read, but Paul seems to be able to string 00:01:50.91\00:01:54.38 a sentence together with all kinds of subordinate clauses 00:01:54.38\00:01:57.78 and we will try to break it down for you today. 00:01:57.78\00:01:59.88 Alright, great! - so Jon, why don't you, if you notice 00:01:59.88\00:02:06.09 here this text that Paul is very, very thankful, but how 00:02:06.09\00:02:12.26 does he expressed his thankfulness? 00:02:12.26\00:02:13.80 Will he expresses thankfulness to them in his prayers. 00:02:13.80\00:02:17.43 But he especially thankful because they have remained 00:02:17.43\00:02:20.77 faithful to God in spite of the things they have gone 00:02:20.77\00:02:24.07 through, they are remaining faithful. 00:02:24.07\00:02:26.47 They continue to trust God and they have had massive life 00:02:26.47\00:02:30.25 change due to the Gospel. 00:02:30.25\00:02:32.08 He sees the fruit in their life of what God is doing 00:02:32.08\00:02:34.72 through the Gospel in their life. 00:02:34.72\00:02:36.75 It's out all over about their faith, they are sharing 00:02:36.75\00:02:40.26 their faith and Paul is hearing about it in other places. 00:02:40.26\00:02:43.53 So it is exciting for him to hear that the word he spoke 00:02:43.53\00:02:46.76 is now being told through them. 00:02:46.76\00:02:49.06 Isn't it a strange thing to pray through your letter to 00:02:49.06\00:02:54.24 somebody? - it's a little strange, yeah! 00:02:54.24\00:02:56.81 It feels that way, you know. 00:02:56.81\00:02:59.11 But it is a neat thing for them also because they are 00:02:59.11\00:03:03.55 living with such great hope of the second coming. 00:03:03.55\00:03:07.45 Well one thing we discovered in a previous program, 00:03:07.45\00:03:11.45 is that Paul is way more emotional than you might 00:03:11.45\00:03:15.42 realize in reading Romans or Galatians. 00:03:15.42\00:03:17.83 He takes things very, very deeply and we see that Paul 00:03:17.83\00:03:22.50 brings all those emotions into his prayers. 00:03:22.50\00:03:25.00 It is in his prayers where he reviews his life and his 00:03:25.00\00:03:28.67 experiences with other people, it is pretty neat. 00:03:28.67\00:03:30.87 You have a way of praying that is a bit unusual. 00:03:30.87\00:03:33.04 Unusual huh? - Tell us about it. 00:03:33.04\00:03:36.38 It's one of the things I like to do from time to time. 00:03:36.38\00:03:39.68 I call it praying with a notepad. 00:03:39.68\00:03:42.05 You know often times we are with hands together and eyes 00:03:42.05\00:03:46.15 closed, but I think God also wants us to interact with 00:03:46.15\00:03:49.49 Him and so sometimes when I'm praying, I just start 00:03:49.49\00:03:53.09 writing down my prayers to God, and in that also when 00:03:53.09\00:03:56.83 we pray we feel impressions from God about maybe caring 00:03:56.83\00:04:00.57 for somebody, don't forget to check on so-and-so. 00:04:00.57\00:04:03.51 Maybe even just write a note, a phone call, send an 00:04:03.51\00:04:06.51 e- mail, things about my children maybe that I could 00:04:06.51\00:04:09.21 become more sensitive to, so I pray with a notepad 00:04:09.21\00:04:11.85 and write down things that I sense that God is inviting 00:04:11.85\00:04:15.25 me into with Him in someone's life and to go and share 00:04:15.25\00:04:18.62 His love with them in some particular way 00:04:18.62\00:04:20.26 that day or that week. 00:04:20.26\00:04:21.42 Alright! Well why don't we get into Paul's prayer? 00:04:21.42\00:04:24.23 - Alright! - Verse by verse and see what we can learn. 00:04:24.23\00:04:26.96 Let's look at 1 Thessalonians 1:1-3 00:04:26.96\00:04:31.30 - There is a number of things that jump out 00:05:00.90\00:05:02.13 to me in this text. 00:05:02.13\00:05:03.70 First of all while Paul is writing the letter you notice 00:05:03.70\00:05:07.37 he shares the credit. - Huh hmmm! 00:05:07.37\00:05:09.07 He says, Paul and Silvanus and Timothy. Now it is clear 00:05:09.07\00:05:12.47 that later all Paul's writing because he talks about 00:05:12.47\00:05:17.21 Timothy and sending Timothy and Silas, so Paul is 00:05:17.21\00:05:21.85 including his colleagues in the letter and it strikes me 00:05:21.85\00:05:25.72 there is no celebrities at the foot of the cross. 00:05:25.72\00:05:29.79 When you realize how God has saved us and what He has 00:05:29.79\00:05:33.09 brought us out of, there is no reason for any of us to 00:05:33.09\00:05:36.26 feel higher than somebody else, smarter than somebody 00:05:36.26\00:05:39.40 else, better than somebody else. 00:05:39.40\00:05:40.77 And Paul, as great of a man as he was, was eager to 00:05:40.77\00:05:45.27 share credit with others, and that is a model I have been 00:05:45.27\00:05:48.81 struggling to follow in my life. 00:05:48.81\00:05:50.71 Spread the credit wherever you can, take the blame when 00:05:50.71\00:05:54.85 necessary. Ha! Ha! Ha! - That is a struggle. 00:05:54.85\00:05:57.49 Because we are so tempted to take the credit, you know! 00:05:57.49\00:06:00.09 People may wonder about who is this Silvanus - Yeah! 00:06:00.09\00:06:02.62 Well he actually appears in the book of Acts. 00:06:02.62\00:06:04.49 But in the book of Acts Silas, you see now Silas is the 00:06:04.49\00:06:09.83 Jewish form of his name. Silvanus is the Latin, you see. 00:06:09.83\00:06:14.50 So what the Jews often did when they would move away from 00:06:14.50\00:06:18.94 Jerusalem, or move away from Israel and go out into other 00:06:18.94\00:06:23.08 parts, they would adopt names that would fit with the 00:06:23.08\00:06:27.45 society, for example my name is Pauline from the German. 00:06:27.45\00:06:31.69 But I have changed that a little bit to make it more 00:06:31.69\00:06:35.82 comfortable for people in the United States it is Paulien, 00:06:35.82\00:06:38.33 and my brothers even says, Paulúein. 00:06:38.33\00:06:40.16 So you see you're trying to make the name to fit in with 00:06:40.16\00:06:43.63 the society in which you are, and we see that happening 00:06:43.63\00:06:47.07 in the New Testament quite a bit. 00:06:47.07\00:06:49.24 Silas or Silvanus was actually a leader in the Jerusalem 00:06:49.24\00:06:53.58 church, so Paul was keeping the church close. 00:06:53.58\00:06:56.64 Paul was a bit of a maverick and he would do some 00:06:56.64\00:06:59.35 different things that troubled some of the brother. 00:06:59.35\00:07:03.35 But he kept some of the leaders of the church with him 00:07:03.35\00:07:07.96 when ever he went so they could assure that what he was 00:07:07.96\00:07:12.53 teaching was really solid. 00:07:12.53\00:07:14.03 Of course these folks would remember the sayings of Jesus, 00:07:14.03\00:07:17.93 Silas was probably one of the 70, Jesus had 12 disciples, 00:07:17.93\00:07:21.80 and 70, so he knew Jesus and could talk with authority 00:07:21.80\00:07:25.67 about what Jesus believed, etc. 00:07:25.67\00:07:28.08 Grace and peace, Grace is a typical Greek greeting, peace 00:07:28.08\00:07:33.58 or shalom is a typical Hebrew greeting, so Paul brings the 00:07:33.58\00:07:39.02 two together here, which is a nice little touch. 00:07:39.02\00:07:41.89 Finally of course we are familiar with faith, hope and 00:07:41.89\00:07:45.39 love, and in verse three he says remembering your work 00:07:45.39\00:07:49.16 of faith and your labor of love, your patience of hope. 00:07:49.16\00:07:53.17 Whenever Paul uses these three together, the last one 00:07:53.17\00:07:57.14 is the most important. - Hmmm! 00:07:57.14\00:07:59.37 You may remember 1 Corinthians 13. - Right! 00:07:59.37\00:08:01.58 Where faith, hope and charity, faith, hope and love. 00:08:01.58\00:08:05.51 Love is the most important thing in Corinthians. 00:08:05.51\00:08:09.45 But in Thessalonians it's hope. 00:08:09.45\00:08:11.49 He has a focus on second coming of Jesus and he wants 00:08:11.49\00:08:15.52 to keep them looking at that. - Yeah! 00:08:15.52\00:08:18.36 So he's thankful, in this passage, for a lot of things. 00:08:18.36\00:08:21.33 Yeah, definitely that is his theme here, that is the 00:08:21.33\00:08:24.93 great theme and I think it is a great example to us too 00:08:24.93\00:08:28.50 in this world. 00:08:28.50\00:08:30.07 We can get bogged down with so many things. 00:08:30.07\00:08:32.84 Just in a day, I like what Jesus said, don't worry about 00:08:32.84\00:08:36.08 tomorrow, just worry about what happens today. 00:08:36.08\00:08:38.08 But today with the economy we live in, with relationships, 00:08:38.08\00:08:42.45 so many crisis, it is so important to give thanks. 00:08:42.45\00:08:45.79 When we give thanks, things begin to fall in line in the 00:08:45.79\00:08:51.09 way things really ought to be. 00:08:51.09\00:08:52.63 I love, one of the things we do in our prayer meeting in 00:08:52.63\00:08:56.23 our church, is often times I'll pray and then we say Amen, 00:08:56.23\00:08:59.83 and then we all go home. 00:08:59.83\00:09:01.14 One of the things I like to do is ask the church members to 00:09:01.14\00:09:03.84 spend some time, let's reflect on our time of prayer. 00:09:03.84\00:09:06.64 What do we hear in our prayers today? 00:09:06.64\00:09:08.88 I remember one prayer meeting in particular where the 00:09:08.88\00:09:11.65 theme of gratitude was clearly heard, and I thought it was 00:09:11.65\00:09:15.38 like this chorus of Thanksgiving from God's people to God. 00:09:15.38\00:09:19.62 People walked away more at peace, a little more light and 00:09:19.62\00:09:23.83 not as heavy just say there is so much to be 00:09:23.83\00:09:26.36 thankful for of God. 00:09:26.36\00:09:28.16 And there is a verse that I really enjoy from 00:09:28.16\00:09:30.20 2 Corinthians 4:15 and this is 00:09:30.20\00:09:32.53 an unusual the NTW (translation), 00:09:32.53\00:09:35.47 It may puzzle people but it is a book that just came out a few 00:09:35.47\00:09:37.87 weeks ago. - A new translation of the New Testament. 00:09:37.87\00:09:40.28 And it says this. "As Grace abounds through the 00:09:40.28\00:09:44.31 "Thanksgiving of more and more people, it will overflow 00:09:44.31\00:09:48.28 "to God's glory." I love that picture of this overflowing 00:09:48.28\00:09:52.35 to God's glory through thanks giving, instigated by His grace. 00:09:52.35\00:09:56.22 The author of that translation is NT Wright, a well-known 00:09:56.22\00:10:00.06 New Testament scholar. - Right! 00:10:00.06\00:10:01.83 - People may be interested, I think it is called the New 00:10:01.83\00:10:04.23 Kingdom Translation and you might want to look at that. 00:10:04.23\00:10:07.60 It's contemporary but it is also solidly grounded in 00:10:07.60\00:10:10.94 scholarship as well. - Right! 00:10:10.94\00:10:13.34 Alright, what about verse four? 00:10:13.34\00:10:15.68 In verse four Paul goes on and he says, 00:10:15.68\00:10:20.12 Hmmm, that's a big word. - That's interesting. 00:10:25.19\00:10:27.22 You're the scholar is going going to have 00:10:27.22\00:10:28.56 to help us with this one. 00:10:28.56\00:10:29.72 Well first of all I want to point now that he says, 00:10:29.72\00:10:33.70 brethren, okay? That means he is calling them brothers. 00:10:33.70\00:10:37.57 The early church did this a lot. 00:10:37.57\00:10:40.00 It was a family of choice kind of thing, you remember 00:10:40.00\00:10:43.64 in a previous program we talked about how the typical 00:10:43.64\00:10:47.14 house church might have as few as 15 or 20 members. 00:10:47.14\00:10:50.58 It was like an extended family, the typical church 00:10:50.58\00:10:53.72 in New Testament times, so they thought of it as 00:10:53.72\00:10:56.95 a family and they would be some relatives there, 00:10:56.95\00:10:59.65 but there would be a lot of strangers and others. 00:10:59.65\00:11:02.86 And being together in church is like a like a family. 00:11:02.86\00:11:06.03 How is that help us when we look at church 00:11:06.03\00:11:08.60 to think in those terms? 00:11:08.60\00:11:09.73 I wish we would do that more, I can remember growing up, 00:11:09.73\00:11:13.44 as a kid, I grew up in a church where everybody was 00:11:13.44\00:11:17.37 brother Jon, or Sister Ruth and would always remind you 00:11:17.37\00:11:21.28 that you are part of the family of God. 00:11:21.28\00:11:23.65 Today you don't hear that it's much, but it is so 00:11:23.65\00:11:27.85 important to remember. 00:11:27.85\00:11:28.95 I guess we have our biological families, but the most 00:11:28.95\00:11:31.09 important thing is to remember that we are part of the 00:11:31.09\00:11:33.19 family of God. -Uh Hmmm! - He is our true Father. 00:11:33.19\00:11:35.92 Well you are wondering about the selection thing? 00:11:35.92\00:11:38.69 - Yeah! - They were chosen and so on and that bothers 00:11:38.69\00:11:41.36 people, predestination and stuff like that. 00:11:41.36\00:11:44.37 But I think what Paul is saying here, he says, 00:11:44.37\00:11:47.70 God had a plan for you before I ever came here. 00:11:47.70\00:11:51.07 We talked last time about the footprints of God. 00:11:51.07\00:11:54.58 The God is there before the missionaries gets there. 00:11:54.58\00:11:58.01 God is there before the preacher gets there and 00:11:58.01\00:12:00.08 I think if we went out with that in mind, that would 00:12:00.08\00:12:03.69 encourage us as we realize that God is touching people 00:12:03.69\00:12:07.29 hearts even before we get there. 00:12:07.29\00:12:09.06 - Right, right, I love how Grace initiates. 00:12:09.06\00:12:11.73 - Um hmmm, now you can go to extremes with this, you 00:12:11.73\00:12:15.26 know if a person is chosen then they have no choices. 00:12:15.26\00:12:18.83 I like to look at that whole idea this way, 00:12:18.83\00:12:22.44 I think when we look at the past we can tell that 00:12:22.44\00:12:26.47 God has been working in our lives. 00:12:26.47\00:12:28.24 We would not be where we are if it were not for God 00:12:28.24\00:12:31.71 choosing us, opening the way, providing information just 00:12:31.71\00:12:36.79 when we need it, when we look to the future. 00:12:36.79\00:12:38.92 I think it is pretty clear there are choices yet to be 00:12:38.92\00:12:42.56 made, we can choose the wrong, or we can choose the right 00:12:42.56\00:12:46.16 and God is encouraging us always to do the best, 00:12:46.16\00:12:49.33 not just the right but the best. - Right! 00:12:49.33\00:12:51.27 - That we can possibly do. 00:12:51.27\00:12:53.27 So there is a bit of tension there between God's chosen us 00:12:53.27\00:12:59.77 on the one hand and our ability to choose. 00:12:59.77\00:13:02.08 But above all else I think that Paul is encouraging us 00:13:02.08\00:13:05.78 with the idea that where ever you are now, 00:13:05.78\00:13:08.65 if you are walking with God, He was there. 00:13:08.65\00:13:11.52 He's brought you on that path. 00:13:11.52\00:13:15.22 It is encouraging to us to know that for all the troubles 00:13:15.22\00:13:18.66 we are going through right now, we are on the path that 00:13:18.66\00:13:21.56 God has chosen for us and He can make even our messes 00:13:21.56\00:13:24.43 something beautiful down the line. - Right! 00:13:24.43\00:13:28.27 He is that kind of God. - Yeah, yeah! 00:13:28.27\00:13:30.64 Well anyway it's time for a break and we are thankful that 00:13:30.64\00:13:33.71 you have been sharing with us thus far and when we get 00:13:33.71\00:13:36.78 back we will finish this long sentence of 00:13:36.78\00:13:40.12 1 Thessalonians Chapter 1. 00:13:40.12\00:13:42.88
