Welcome to Books of the Book, I'm Jon Paulien, Dean of the 00:00:22.12\00:00:25.65 school of religion at Loma Linda University and I have 00:00:25.65\00:00:29.16 with me my Pastor, Jon Ciccarelli. 00:00:29.16\00:00:32.19 Pastor of the Calimesa Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:00:32.19\00:00:34.73 Jon it is a pleasure to be here with you. 00:00:34.73\00:00:36.93 You know one of the things I like about you? 00:00:36.93\00:00:39.57 Is that you spell your name right, there is 00:00:39.57\00:00:42.14 no H. in there. How did that come about for you? 00:00:42.14\00:00:44.41 Well in my case it is very simple, my parents named me 00:00:44.41\00:00:47.81 after a Bible character Jonathan. 00:00:47.81\00:00:49.91 When I became an adult I stopped to think, I'm probably 00:00:49.91\00:00:53.45 going to have to sign my name 100,000 times in my life, 00:00:53.45\00:00:56.92 a little bit shorter might be a good idea, 00:00:56.92\00:00:59.62 so I just shortened it. 00:00:59.62\00:01:01.12 Less is more says Ezra. 00:01:01.12\00:01:02.56 Well for me I'm the youngest of four children, 00:01:02.56\00:01:05.69 and I have three older sisters. 00:01:05.69\00:01:07.93 Oh, that sounds like trouble. - yeah, so when I was 00:01:07.93\00:01:11.90 born, my parents said God must have some special for him 00:01:11.90\00:01:14.90 and they named me after John the Baptist. 00:01:14.90\00:01:16.47 I asked my mom, But I said John the Baptist spells his name 00:01:16.47\00:01:19.47 with an H., how did you come up with just JON? 00:01:19.47\00:01:21.71 They said, well we just liked it. 00:01:21.71\00:01:24.28 So that is how I ended up with Jon. 00:01:24.28\00:01:26.78 Pretty cool, it is nice to be here with you today. 00:01:26.78\00:01:29.78 We are going to be steady the letters of first and 00:01:29.78\00:01:32.72 second Thessalonians together and so what we want to do 00:01:32.72\00:01:37.29 in this program is to set the table for it. 00:01:37.29\00:01:41.53 In other words we are going to talk about how these 00:01:41.53\00:01:44.80 letters happened and I think to kind of summarize it 00:01:44.80\00:01:47.94 there is one text and all those Thessalonians letters 00:01:47.94\00:01:51.07 that I would like to emphasize. 00:01:51.07\00:01:53.04 It would be chapter 2 verse 13. 00:01:53.04\00:01:54.94 And for the viewing audience I should just mention that 00:01:54.94\00:01:58.01 the translations of first and second Thessalonians are 00:01:58.01\00:02:01.35 translations that I made not out of disrespect to any 00:02:01.35\00:02:04.55 of the Bible translation, but to bring out the nuances 00:02:04.55\00:02:08.39 in the original language that sometimes are smoothed 00:02:08.39\00:02:12.19 over in the English. 00:02:12.19\00:02:13.93 So 1 Thessalonians 2:13 reads like this. 00:02:13.93\00:02:19.27 And Jon I think that is a game changer, you've got people 00:02:41.92\00:02:44.73 walking around in today's world, they don't know whether 00:02:44.73\00:02:47.46 that they are coming or going. 00:02:47.46\00:02:48.70 I think sometimes even as Christians, we feel that way 00:02:48.70\00:02:52.00 from time to time and to know that we can have a word 00:02:52.00\00:02:55.80 that comes from the King of the Universe, that covers 00:02:55.80\00:02:59.24 values way beyond anything we understand and can give us 00:02:59.24\00:03:02.54 guidance for everyday, I mean that changes everything. 00:03:02.54\00:03:05.85 - Right, right. 00:03:05.85\00:03:07.28 - that brings life together the way it should be. 00:03:07.28\00:03:09.82 But Jon, why should anyone really take 00:03:09.82\00:03:13.09 the Bible seriously today? 00:03:13.09\00:03:14.92 - well that's good question, I think a lot of people 00:03:14.92\00:03:17.29 probably wonder if it's just ink on a page. 00:03:17.29\00:03:19.96 One of the things we are going to emphasize on this 00:03:19.96\00:03:22.63 program is Bible prophecy. 00:03:22.63\00:03:24.57 In so many ways God said ahead of time, what was going 00:03:24.57\00:03:29.60 to come, and it happened. 00:03:29.60\00:03:31.41 You know economists today, they can't even tell you if 00:03:31.41\00:03:34.04 the economy is going up or down tomorrow, they are not 00:03:34.04\00:03:36.64 even sure if it's going up or down today. 00:03:36.64\00:03:38.81 For the Bible to talk about something happening a year 00:03:38.81\00:03:41.68 or five years or 50 years later and it comes true, 00:03:41.68\00:03:44.52 that is amazing, only God can do that. 00:03:44.52\00:03:47.22 - yeah! - not only that, the Bible is the most 00:03:47.22\00:03:50.76 thoroughly attested ancient book, famous people like 00:03:50.76\00:03:55.23 Alexandria the Great, Cicero and so on. 00:03:55.23\00:03:57.90 We may have one or five or 10 manuscripts of their 00:03:57.90\00:04:01.80 writings, the New Testament has almost 6000 handwritten 00:04:01.80\00:04:07.21 manuscripts, all attesting to its value. 00:04:07.21\00:04:10.61 You see, so to me the Bible is the most solid book 00:04:10.61\00:04:14.08 that we have. 00:04:14.08\00:04:16.12 You know one of the things for me, is just the 00:04:16.12\00:04:18.85 resurrection of Jesus. 00:04:18.85\00:04:20.92 You think about why the empty tomb? Why was the body 00:04:20.92\00:04:24.49 of Jesus never been found? 00:04:24.49\00:04:26.26 If you think of those who were enemies of Christ, 00:04:26.26\00:04:30.33 if they had stolen the body of Jesus, why wouldn't 00:04:30.33\00:04:34.40 they reveal it at some point? 00:04:34.40\00:04:36.50 When the disciples were out proclaiming the resurrection of 00:04:36.50\00:04:38.81 Jesus, and then they could pull out no, here it is, 00:04:38.81\00:04:42.58 He was not raised from the dead. 00:04:42.58\00:04:44.31 Then for the disciples, if they had stolen the body out 00:04:44.31\00:04:47.42 of the tomb, why on earth did they go through all the 00:04:47.42\00:04:51.35 suffering and the martyrdom, no one has been willing to 00:04:51.35\00:04:55.22 die for a lie. That would be foolish. 00:04:55.22\00:04:57.83 So you are seeing things right there in the Bible, 00:04:57.83\00:05:01.26 that can only be explained by a supernatural power or 00:05:01.26\00:05:04.67 influence and I personally know several major historians 00:05:04.67\00:05:08.07 that would agree 100% with you. 00:05:08.07\00:05:09.74 They say the empty tomb is a powerful evidence that 00:05:09.74\00:05:13.07 these things are real and historical, we're going to 00:05:13.07\00:05:16.34 notice in our programs here on Thessalonians, there are several 00:05:16.34\00:05:20.78 points were things that are said in the Bible intersect 00:05:20.78\00:05:24.55 with things we know from history. 00:05:24.55\00:05:26.52 They are attested by archaeologists, they are tested 00:05:26.52\00:05:29.16 by ancient literature, and the Bible just connects, it fits 00:05:29.16\00:05:32.86 with all of that and we can have confidence in it. 00:05:32.86\00:05:36.00 You know another thing Jon is, the Bible itself is self 00:05:36.00\00:05:40.57 authenticating. - what does that mean? 00:05:40.57\00:05:42.57 When you actually sit down and spend time with the Word 00:05:42.57\00:05:46.17 of God, the same Spirit that was in the authors of the 00:05:46.17\00:05:49.31 Bible inspiring them to write, is the same Holy Spirit 00:05:49.31\00:05:52.41 that speaks to our hearts and minds as we read 00:05:52.41\00:05:55.28 those very words and it meets our needs in such 00:05:55.28\00:05:58.12 deep and profound ways. 00:05:58.12\00:05:59.82 You know a church I was Pastoring in one time, there 00:05:59.82\00:06:03.12 a gentleman who was coming and proclaiming to be an atheist. 00:06:03.12\00:06:05.96 His wife was a Christian, was an Adventist when they were coming. 00:06:05.96\00:06:08.66 When he would read the Bible, he would come to church 00:06:08.66\00:06:11.67 and worship and would begin to weep. 00:06:11.67\00:06:13.13 His wife would always ask him, what are you crying for? 00:06:13.13\00:06:16.50 He would say, oh because I lost my Father couple of 00:06:16.50\00:06:19.84 years ago and I am still grieving that. 00:06:19.84\00:06:21.21 Well after a couple years of being on this journey and 00:06:21.21\00:06:23.81 coming to church and reading his Bible, he finally 00:06:23.81\00:06:26.35 confessed that he accepted Christ and those tears every 00:06:26.35\00:06:29.82 time I cried was because I could feel God's presence in 00:06:29.82\00:06:33.25 my very being when I read those words. 00:06:33.25\00:06:34.99 I can't deny it any more, and so the word of God itself 00:06:34.99\00:06:39.53 just speaks to our very deepest needs, peace, and healing. 00:06:39.53\00:06:43.97 You know what I hear Pastor Jon saying, is that if 00:06:43.97\00:06:47.70 you are not sure whether the Bible is right for you, 00:06:47.70\00:06:51.21 if it just looks like ink on a page like any other book, 00:06:51.21\00:06:54.64 he is saying, give it a try. Read it. 00:06:54.64\00:06:58.35 Just going in a corner somewhere where nobody else can see 00:06:58.35\00:07:02.22 you, open it up and give it a shot because the Bible 00:07:02.22\00:07:06.22 contains within itself words that are empowered by the 00:07:06.22\00:07:09.52 Holy Spirit, now you may not believe that at this moment. 00:07:09.52\00:07:13.53 But try it, find out, because so many people, millions 00:07:13.53\00:07:17.43 throughout history have discovered that the 00:07:17.43\00:07:20.20 Bible authenticates itself. 00:07:20.20\00:07:22.80 When you read it and take time, God speaks to you 00:07:22.80\00:07:25.41 through that book, and it is life-changing. 00:07:25.41\00:07:28.38 Jon do we really have to study the 00:07:28.38\00:07:31.71 Bible deeply, to really experience God? 00:07:31.71\00:07:35.22 Oh, in other words do you have to be a Bible scholar 00:07:35.22\00:07:37.42 in order to follow Jesus? 00:07:37.42\00:07:38.69 I'm picking on you a little bit - absolutely not, absolutely not 00:07:38.69\00:07:41.12 I want to be clear on that. 00:07:41.12\00:07:42.32 I remember a beautiful young lady that I was working 00:07:42.32\00:07:45.43 with its a young Pastor sometime ago, 00:07:45.43\00:07:47.83 and she had been baptized. 00:07:47.83\00:07:49.83 She came to me and was really distressed, she said I need 00:07:49.83\00:07:52.57 to be re-baptized again. 00:07:52.57\00:07:53.70 I said what are you talking about? She said well there 00:07:53.70\00:07:57.14 were things I didn't tell my Senior Pastor, and then 00:07:57.14\00:08:00.51 she unfolded the tale of woe and so forth. 00:08:00.51\00:08:03.11 I said let us go deal with it then. 00:08:03.11\00:08:05.21 We took a walkout by a lake and sat down on a rock and 00:08:05.21\00:08:09.12 I led her through the story of Jesus and said Jesus died 00:08:09.12\00:08:13.02 for you, all that history can be gone. 00:08:13.02\00:08:16.12 I led her through the sinner's prayer, and when that 00:08:16.12\00:08:21.20 prayer was done, thunder clapped, rain poured down, 00:08:21.20\00:08:26.27 and she turned to me with this wet sheep dog kind of look, 00:08:26.27\00:08:30.24 and she said with a big smile, I'm being baptized again. 00:08:30.24\00:08:34.54 She took that as a sign from God, now I realize that 00:08:34.54\00:08:38.51 doesn't happen for everybody, but sometimes God connects 00:08:38.51\00:08:42.45 with people at special times and opens things up. 00:08:42.45\00:08:46.02 At that moment, she knew God was real. 00:08:46.02\00:08:48.96 She didn't need a Bible to tell her that God was real. 00:08:48.96\00:08:51.93 So there are times when God will work directly with 00:08:51.93\00:08:54.46 people. - so you do you still know that beautiful, 00:08:54.46\00:08:57.00 beautiful woman? 00:08:57.00\00:08:58.77 Oh yeah, I didn't want to let that one go, I married her 00:08:58.77\00:09:00.87 and we have been together 38 happy years. 00:09:00.87\00:09:04.24 Ah, that's great. But it is so important I think too, these 00:09:04.24\00:09:07.38 experiences are great and I think all of us have probably 00:09:07.38\00:09:10.15 had some of those types of experiences of God and nature, 00:09:10.15\00:09:13.35 but it is so important for us to test these experiences 00:09:13.35\00:09:16.55 with the Bible, to make sure they line up with Scripture. 00:09:16.55\00:09:20.52 Because sometimes I think, if we are not careful, we can 00:09:20.52\00:09:24.19 rely so much on those other experiences and less of the 00:09:24.19\00:09:27.83 Bible and that is when it gets kind of scary. 00:09:27.83\00:09:30.10 We always want to be rooted in the Bible, but thank 00:09:30.10\00:09:32.83 God for those experiences. 00:09:32.83\00:09:34.50 One thing I would say in relation to what you are saying, 00:09:34.50\00:09:36.71 is we all have voices inside of our heads. 00:09:36.71\00:09:38.91 People may think the voices inside their head is 00:09:38.91\00:09:42.11 the voice of God, and it can be. 00:09:42.11\00:09:43.71 But there is an evil one out there, the Bible tells us, 00:09:43.71\00:09:46.78 that's sometimes plants thoughts in our mind. 00:09:46.78\00:09:49.18 Sometimes that voice in the middle of your ear is one of 00:09:49.18\00:09:53.12 your parents, or maybe a cruel uncle that use to beat you 00:09:53.12\00:09:56.42 up for something like that, there are all kinds of voices 00:09:56.42\00:10:00.06 in our head's and the Bible, being the authentic Word of 00:10:00.06\00:10:03.60 God, helps us to sort out some of the stuff that 00:10:03.60\00:10:06.77 is going on in our head. 00:10:06.77\00:10:07.97 Some of it is trash, it needs to be thrown out, 00:10:07.97\00:10:10.11 and some of it needs to be hung on to. 00:10:10.11\00:10:12.41 Yes God will speak to you, God can meet you where you are, 00:10:12.41\00:10:16.41 but because there are many voices out there, even many 00:10:16.41\00:10:20.38 spirits some would say, I think it is helpful that the 00:10:20.38\00:10:23.75 Bible can help us sort that out and give us something 00:10:23.75\00:10:27.06 solid to depend on. 00:10:27.06\00:10:28.62 Well Jon, let's get into the Bible because the letters of 00:10:28.62\00:10:32.73 first Thessalonians were written with a specific series 00:10:32.73\00:10:36.73 of historical events in mind. 00:10:36.73\00:10:38.60 There was an ancient city called Thessalonica, which is 00:10:38.60\00:10:42.70 where Thessalonians comes from. 00:10:42.70\00:10:45.04 The people who were the Thessalonians and the city was 00:10:45.04\00:10:47.04 Thessalonica and how did Paul get there? 00:10:47.04\00:10:49.81 Before he got to Thessalonica he went to a place called 00:10:49.81\00:10:54.92 Philippi, a colony of Rome. 00:10:54.92\00:10:57.15 You can read about it in Acts 16 it's one of my favorite 00:10:57.15\00:11:02.56 stories in the Bible, even from a kid. 00:11:02.56\00:11:04.73 Paul has this vision, and this man is calling Paul 00:11:04.73\00:11:09.76 to come to Macedonia, so Paul does go to Macedonia and 00:11:09.76\00:11:13.80 he makes his way to Philippi and that's where he goes on 00:11:13.80\00:11:17.77 and goes outside the village at the Riverside for a place of 00:11:17.77\00:11:21.08 prayer and meets Lydia, the seller of purple. 00:11:21.08\00:11:23.41 He shares the good news with her and she gets baptized. 00:11:23.41\00:11:29.02 But then it says also, later in Acts that as Paul was going 00:11:29.02\00:11:33.25 about preaching the gospel there was a certain slave girl 00:11:33.25\00:11:37.56 that had a spirit of divination and she would proclaim 00:11:37.56\00:11:41.03 that these people are here for God, and proclaiming the 00:11:41.03\00:11:44.50 Gospel and it became very annoying. 00:11:44.50\00:11:46.80 - and the short story is he ended up in jail over this, 00:11:46.80\00:11:49.20 right? - exactly, exactly, but before he got 00:11:49.20\00:11:52.11 to jail, he took quite a beating. 00:11:52.11\00:11:54.21 They brought him before, because the slave owners of the 00:11:54.21\00:11:59.08 woman didn't like that they had lost their business and 00:11:59.08\00:12:02.62 so now they bring him before the magistrates and beat them 00:12:02.62\00:12:06.55 and take him to prison and then in the middle of the night 00:12:06.55\00:12:10.46 Paul and Silas are singing hymns and praying prayers 00:12:10.46\00:12:13.23 and God brings this earthquake. 00:12:13.23\00:12:15.10 They are going to be set free, the jailor of course is 00:12:15.10\00:12:18.17 concerned and goes to them and finds they are still 00:12:18.17\00:12:21.20 there and ask them what I must do to be saved? 00:12:21.20\00:12:23.51 So his whole family becomes saved, and then the next 00:12:23.51\00:12:28.61 morning they are back in prison and the magistrates come 00:12:28.61\00:12:32.15 and say they are going to let them go and Paul of course, 00:12:32.15\00:12:35.32 as Paul does, throws a little wrench into it and says 00:12:35.32\00:12:38.09 wait a minute, we're Roman citizens you can't treat 00:12:38.09\00:12:40.82 us like this. And they go on as well. 00:12:40.82\00:12:43.09 The thing is what happened to them before they got to 00:12:43.09\00:12:45.06 Thessalonica there. 00:12:45.06\00:12:46.23 And Paul mentions this in 1 Thessalonians 2:1-2 he says, 00:12:46.23\00:12:52.47 Inner struggle he says, I can imagine Paul and his 00:13:14.46\00:13:18.53 companion Silas walking along the road, they are bruised 00:13:18.53\00:13:22.06 and beaten and they're asking why are we doing this thing? 00:13:22.06\00:13:25.60 They come to Thessalonica and the last thing on earth 00:13:25.60\00:13:29.97 they want to do is to preach the gospel again. 00:13:29.97\00:13:31.71 Everywhere they go they're getting beaten up for this thing 00:13:31.71\00:13:34.38 And he says to the Thessalonians as you know we became 00:13:34.38\00:13:39.08 bold, the original language says, we became bold. 00:13:39.08\00:13:43.18 In other words God gave them the courage to speak again 00:13:43.18\00:13:46.76 in spite of all these challenges. 00:13:46.76\00:13:50.63 They gave it another shot and the Thessalonians were 00:13:50.63\00:13:54.36 so glad that they did. 00:13:54.36\00:13:56.00 Well Jon would want to go a little bit deeper into this but 00:13:56.00\00:13:59.27 right now we need to take a break. 00:13:59.27\00:14:01.07
