Let's pray. Our beloved heavenly Father, once again we come into 00:00:31.26\00:00:37.40 your presence with gratefulness in our hearts because we know 00:00:37.43\00:00:41.14 that You're a loving God, and You want us to know how things 00:00:41.17\00:00:45.04 will unwind in the last days so that we can be prepared. 00:00:45.07\00:00:48.11 We ask that as we study this evening, the last portion of the 00:00:48.14\00:00:52.51 third angel's message, that Your Holy Spirit will be with us. 00:00:52.55\00:00:55.92 Help us to understand the urgency of the times 00:00:55.95\00:00:59.15 in which we are living. 00:00:59.19\00:01:00.59 And help us to understand what the final punishment 00:01:00.66\00:01:04.23 of the wicked, and Satan, and his angels will be, 00:01:04.26\00:01:07.50 so that we can admire and love Your character. 00:01:07.50\00:01:10.17 And we thank You Father for hearing our prayer, 00:01:10.23\00:01:12.90 for we ask it in the precious name of Jesus, Amen. 00:01:12.93\00:01:17.31 I'd like to begin by reading Revelation 14:9-11, 00:01:17.37\00:01:25.15 Revelation 14:9-11. 00:01:25.18\00:01:28.98 In our presentation last time we discussed the first part 00:01:29.02\00:01:34.96 of the third angel's message. 00:01:34.99\00:01:36.42 And I'm going to read that portion, and then do a little 00:01:36.46\00:01:39.79 review, and then we'll begin with what we're going to study 00:01:39.83\00:01:43.30 in our lecture today. 00:01:43.33\00:01:44.67 It says there in Revelation 14:9 00:01:44.70\00:01:47.70 That is followed the first two angels. 00:01:50.04\00:01:51.84 Of course we studied yesterday that Jesus Christ drank the wine 00:02:14.60\00:02:20.97 of the wrath of God from the cup; the cup that His 00:02:21.00\00:02:25.21 own Father gave Him. 00:02:25.24\00:02:26.57 And Jesus drank the cup of the wrath of God 00:02:26.64\00:02:30.15 for everyone on Planet Earth. 00:02:30.21\00:02:32.21 But the sad thing is those who refuse to receive the 00:02:32.25\00:02:37.15 third angel's message will have to drink the cup of God's 00:02:37.19\00:02:41.29 wrath, the wine of God's wrath themselves, 00:02:41.32\00:02:44.19 because they rejected what Jesus Christ did for them 00:02:44.23\00:02:48.70 when He came to this earth. 00:02:48.73\00:02:50.10 What a waste! They could have been saved. 00:02:50.13\00:02:53.50 But instead of following Christ, they chose to 00:02:53.57\00:02:57.44 follow the antichrist. 00:02:57.47\00:02:59.17 And, by the way, we have studied that the antichrist does not 00:02:59.21\00:03:03.75 mean, primarily against Christ, but it means one who seeks 00:03:03.78\00:03:09.02 to occupy the place of Christ. 00:03:09.05\00:03:11.99 So the third angel's message says that those who worship 00:03:12.02\00:03:14.96 the one who seeks to occupy the place of Christ, 00:03:14.99\00:03:18.99 and the image of that beast, which we've already studied, 00:03:19.03\00:03:23.57 and receives his mark; those are going to receive 00:03:23.63\00:03:27.50 the wine of the wrath of God. 00:03:27.54\00:03:29.37 Because they did not accept Jesus Christ, the true Messiah, 00:03:29.40\00:03:33.84 but they chose to follow a counterfeit. 00:03:33.88\00:03:36.21 They chose to follow the beast, who is a 00:03:36.24\00:03:38.71 counterfeit Christ on earth. 00:03:38.75\00:03:40.88 And then we read, continuing in the third angel's message, 00:03:40.92\00:03:46.29 the following: this is the middle of verse 10. 00:03:46.32\00:03:51.59 He shall be tormented... 00:03:51.63\00:03:54.73 That is those who receive the mark of the beast, 00:03:54.73\00:03:57.97 who worship the beast, who worship the image, 00:03:58.00\00:03:59.77 who receive the number of his name. 00:03:59.80\00:04:02.00 He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence 00:04:02.04\00:04:07.41 of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb. 00:04:07.48\00:04:10.95 So the culmination of the outpouring of God's wrath is 00:04:24.93\00:04:29.83 found when fire and brimstone falls from heaven, and consumes 00:04:29.86\00:04:35.24 those who worship the beast, his image, and receive the 00:04:35.27\00:04:39.07 mark of the beast. 00:04:39.11\00:04:40.44 So what we're studying is a matter of life and death. 00:04:40.48\00:04:42.98 You know, it's not an optional thing. 00:04:43.01\00:04:45.75 Well, you know, I will choose to accept the third angel's 00:04:45.78\00:04:50.45 message, or I'll choose to reject the 00:04:50.49\00:04:52.19 third angel's message. 00:04:52.22\00:04:53.56 The fact is that if we accept the message, we're going to be 00:04:53.62\00:04:56.19 saved, and we're going to survive, and we're going to 00:04:56.22\00:04:59.43 have eternal life because Jesus drank the cup. 00:04:59.46\00:05:01.56 But if we follow the beast, and receive his mark, 00:05:01.60\00:05:05.53 and worship his image, we're going to be lost. 00:05:05.57\00:05:08.94 We're going to drink the cup of the wine of the wrath of God 00:05:08.97\00:05:12.61 without mixture of mercy. 00:05:12.64\00:05:15.01 And the Bible tells us that this is going to be the culmination, 00:05:15.04\00:05:20.05 the fire and brimstone is going to be the culmination of the 00:05:20.12\00:05:23.79 punishment against the wicked. 00:05:23.82\00:05:25.42 Now I want to dwell, especially in our lecture today, about what 00:05:25.45\00:05:30.13 forever means, because you notice here that it says 00:05:30.16\00:05:32.73 that the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever. 00:05:32.76\00:05:36.87 And there are other passages in the Bible that speak 00:05:36.93\00:05:39.83 about eternal fire. 00:05:39.87\00:05:41.60 Notice, for example, Matthew 25: 41, Matthew 25:41. 00:05:41.64\00:05:48.78 This is a very important passage. 00:05:48.81\00:05:51.25 It's the parable, or the story of the sheep and the goats; 00:05:51.28\00:05:53.98 when Jesus separates the sheep and the goats. 00:05:54.02\00:05:56.18 It says there in verse 41: 00:05:56.22\00:05:57.99 Once again, the fire is called what? everlasting fire. 00:06:11.60\00:06:15.80 The fire and brimstone is an everlasting fire. 00:06:15.84\00:06:19.14 Notice Matthew 25:46, Matthew 25:46, 00:06:19.17\00:06:25.21 just a few verses further down. It says: 00:06:25.25\00:06:27.98 And so you have everlasting punishment. 00:06:36.29\00:06:38.56 You have eternal fire. 00:06:38.59\00:06:40.90 You have no rest day or night. 00:06:40.93\00:06:43.47 Does this mean that those who worship the beast and his image, 00:06:43.53\00:06:47.64 and receive the mark, are going to burn forever and ever, 00:06:47.67\00:06:52.17 and ever, and they're never going to go out? 00:06:52.21\00:06:54.78 I want you to notice also Revelation 20:10. 00:06:54.81\00:06:59.55 We're going to answer this question that I just formulated, 00:06:59.58\00:07:02.75 and we're going to take a look at what Scripture 00:07:02.78\00:07:04.85 has to say, not tradition. Revelation 20:10. 00:07:04.89\00:07:09.12 It's speaking here about the Devil. It says there: 00:07:09.16\00:07:12.16 And what? See, there it is again; fire and brim... 00:07:17.77\00:07:20.64 Is the Devil going to suffer the unmitigated wrath of God? 00:07:20.67\00:07:24.24 Is he going to have to drink the cup of the wrath of God? 00:07:24.31\00:07:26.54 the culmination of the drinking of the cup? Absolutely. 00:07:26.57\00:07:29.41 Really the tense of the verb is where the beast and the false 00:07:36.18\00:07:39.95 prophet were cast. 00:07:39.99\00:07:41.99 That's the antecedent verb, so it shows that they were cast 00:07:42.02\00:07:45.96 into the fire immediately before the beginning of the millennium. 00:07:45.99\00:07:49.90 And then it says at the end of the verse: And they will be 00:07:49.93\00:07:53.44 tormented day and night, forever and ever. 00:07:53.50\00:07:58.57 Now does this mean that the wicked are also going to burn 00:07:58.61\00:08:03.11 in the fire forever and ever, and the Devil and his angels 00:08:03.14\00:08:06.15 are going to burn in the fire forever and ever? 00:08:06.18\00:08:08.05 They're going to continue drinking the cup of God's wrath 00:08:08.08\00:08:10.82 forever where they'll never go out? 00:08:10.85\00:08:14.19 Is that what Scripture is trying to teach? 00:08:14.22\00:08:16.29 Well, that's what we're going to take a look at, 00:08:16.32\00:08:19.53 especially in our study today. 00:08:19.56\00:08:21.66 In order to understand what we are going to look at today, 00:08:21.70\00:08:26.74 we need to understand what Scripture means 00:08:26.77\00:08:31.11 by everlasting fire. 00:08:31.14\00:08:32.47 Now you'll notice that Scripture does not say that the wicked 00:08:32.51\00:08:37.18 will burn eternally. 00:08:37.25\00:08:39.01 Scripture says that the fire burns eternally. 00:08:39.05\00:08:43.12 There's a distinction. 00:08:43.15\00:08:44.49 The fire is eternal fire, but it doesn't say that the 00:08:44.52\00:08:47.49 wicked are eternal. 00:08:47.56\00:08:48.89 We're going to notice that that's a very 00:08:48.92\00:08:50.63 significant distinction. 00:08:50.66\00:08:51.99 Now what is the eternal fire? 00:08:52.03\00:08:55.43 Well, in order to understand it, we need to go back to an 00:08:55.46\00:08:59.27 Old Testament story; the story of the destruction 00:08:59.30\00:09:02.47 of Sodom and Gomorrah. 00:09:02.50\00:09:04.04 So I invite you to go with me to Genesis 19:24 00:09:04.07\00:09:08.54 and we'll also read verse 28. 00:09:08.58\00:09:10.78 It says there: Then the Lord rained... Notice this. 00:09:10.81\00:09:15.92 ...brimstone and fire. 00:09:15.95\00:09:18.25 Is this the same expression we find in Revelation? 00:09:18.29\00:09:21.69 Most certainly. 00:09:21.72\00:09:23.06 And where did this brimstone and fire come from? 00:09:27.66\00:09:30.60 Is that where the fire and brimstone comes in Revelation? 00:09:33.44\00:09:35.74 Absolutely. Verse 28. 00:09:35.77\00:09:38.67 We'll jump from verse 24 to verse 28. 00:09:38.71\00:09:41.31 Notice the smoke ascends once the cities are burned 00:09:41.34\00:09:44.45 with fire and brimstone. It says: 00:09:44.48\00:09:46.28 That is Abraham. 00:09:46.68\00:09:48.08 Does Revelation also speak about smoke going up? Absolutely. 00:09:59.66\00:10:03.33 So Revelation speaks about fire and brimstone. 00:10:03.37\00:10:05.97 It speaks about smoke going up, and it speaks about the fire 00:10:06.00\00:10:10.17 and brimstone coming from heaven. 00:10:10.21\00:10:11.71 Now go with me to Jude, verse 7. 00:10:11.74\00:10:14.68 And we only give the verse because Jude only has 00:10:14.71\00:10:17.41 one chapter, so Jude verse 7. 00:10:17.45\00:10:19.35 And let's notice what kind of fire destroyed 00:10:19.38\00:10:22.42 Sodom and Gomorrah. 00:10:22.45\00:10:23.79 There's a particular type of fire that 00:10:23.85\00:10:25.35 destroyed these cities. 00:10:25.39\00:10:26.72 The fire and brimstone that fell from heaven, and the smoke went 00:10:26.76\00:10:30.19 up like a furnace; it was a certain kind of fire. 00:10:30.23\00:10:33.66 Notice Jude 7. It says there: 00:10:33.70\00:10:36.06 These cities are set forth as an example. 00:10:52.31\00:10:55.48 What kind of fire destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah? 00:11:00.59\00:11:03.56 The Bible says that it was eternal fire that destroyed 00:11:03.63\00:11:07.10 Sodom and Gomorrah. 00:11:07.13\00:11:08.43 It was eternal fire and brimstone, if you please. 00:11:08.46\00:11:11.17 Because we just read that fire and brimstone fell from 00:11:11.20\00:11:14.10 heaven upon the cities. 00:11:14.14\00:11:15.70 Now I want you to notice a text that appears to be in 00:11:15.74\00:11:19.87 contradiction with Jude 7. 00:11:19.91\00:11:21.51 2 Peter 2:6, and I underlined the word appears because there 00:11:21.54\00:11:26.78 are no contradictions in the Bible when you study carefully. 00:11:26.82\00:11:29.98 2 Peter 2:6, Speaking about the cities of Sodom 00:11:30.05\00:11:34.49 and Gomorrah it says, 00:11:34.52\00:11:35.86 What were Sodom and Gomorrah reduced to? 00:11:49.00\00:11:51.31 They were reduced to ashes, but they were destroyed 00:11:51.34\00:11:54.14 with what kind of fire? 00:11:54.21\00:11:55.54 They were destroyed with everlasting, 00:11:55.58\00:11:57.68 or with eternal fire. 00:11:57.71\00:11:59.05 Now the question is, are Sodom and Gomorrah 00:11:59.08\00:12:00.98 still burning today? 00:12:01.02\00:12:02.35 Sodom and Gomorrah are not burning today. 00:12:02.38\00:12:05.45 So eternal fire must mean something different than what 00:12:05.49\00:12:09.96 most people assume that it means. 00:12:10.03\00:12:12.46 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:12:12.49\00:12:13.83 The question is, what is the fire that destroyed 00:12:13.90\00:12:18.50 Sodom and Gomorrah? 00:12:18.53\00:12:20.20 We need to go to a few other texts in the Old Testament 00:12:20.24\00:12:23.47 that explain what that fire is. 00:12:23.51\00:12:25.41 Go with me to Deuteronomy 4:23, 24, Deuteronomy 4:23, 24. 00:12:25.44\00:12:33.88 Here God is warning Israel not to practice idolatry. 00:12:33.92\00:12:39.62 And notice what it says. 00:12:39.65\00:12:40.99 Take heed to yourselves lest you forget the covenant of the Lord 00:12:41.02\00:12:45.06 your God which He made with you, and make for yourselves 00:12:45.09\00:12:48.96 a carved image in the form of anything which the Lord 00:12:49.00\00:12:52.13 your God has forbidden you. 00:12:52.17\00:12:53.50 In other words, don't make any idols. 00:12:53.57\00:12:55.60 And then it says in verse 24 the reason why you should 00:12:55.64\00:12:59.91 not make these idols. 00:12:59.94\00:13:01.34 For the Lord your God is what? is a consuming fire, 00:13:01.38\00:13:07.25 a jealous God. Let me ask you, What is God? 00:13:07.32\00:13:09.78 God is a what? a consuming fire. 00:13:09.82\00:13:12.52 So we begin to understand what the fire is. 00:13:12.55\00:13:15.89 The fire is whom? God, according to this. 00:13:15.92\00:13:19.66 Ah, you're saying, Is God then a bunch of flames of fire? No. 00:13:19.69\00:13:23.53 We're going to notice that God is fire in a specific sense. 00:13:23.57\00:13:27.94 Now go with me to Hebrews 12:28, 29, where this verse, 00:13:27.97\00:13:33.54 Deuteronomy 4:24 is quoted in the New Testament. 00:13:33.58\00:13:37.91 Hebrews 12:28, 29. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom 00:13:37.95\00:13:45.69 which cannot be shaken, let us have grace by which we may serve 00:13:45.72\00:13:50.83 God acceptably with reverence and Godly fear. 00:13:50.89\00:13:54.46 Now why should we serve God acceptably, 00:13:54.50\00:13:57.43 with reverence and Godly fear? 00:13:57.50\00:13:59.03 Notice: For our God is a consuming fire. 00:13:59.07\00:14:05.37 Who is the consuming fire? 00:14:05.41\00:14:06.88 God is the consuming fire, according to this. 00:14:06.91\00:14:10.45 Now, does this mean that God is composed of flames of fire? 00:14:10.48\00:14:16.72 Of course not. Fire means something concerning the nature 00:14:16.79\00:14:24.03 of God; who God is. 00:14:24.06\00:14:25.69 I want you to notice Exodus 24: 15-17. 00:14:25.73\00:14:30.93 In our last lecture we noticed that God and sin 00:14:30.97\00:14:33.70 cannot exist together. 00:14:33.74\00:14:35.10 That's why God ultimately has to eradicate sin from the universe. 00:14:35.14\00:14:38.94 Because holiness and sin cannot coexist. 00:14:38.97\00:14:42.51 Now I want you to notice Exodus 24:15. 00:14:42.54\00:14:46.35 Now praise the Lord that there was a cloud that covered 00:14:51.85\00:14:55.12 the mountain, or else Israel would have been wiped out. 00:14:55.16\00:14:57.39 It continues saying in verse 16: 00:14:57.43\00:14:59.19 Now notice this: 00:15:11.64\00:15:12.97 What is it that is like a consuming fire? 00:15:23.05\00:15:25.55 The what? The glory of the Lord. 00:15:25.59\00:15:28.26 Let me ask you, What is it that destroyed the cities of 00:15:28.29\00:15:30.99 Sodom and Gomorrah? 00:15:31.03\00:15:32.36 The fire and brimstone that fell from heaven was a manifestation. 00:15:32.39\00:15:37.03 For a moment God withdrew the veil that covered Him from 00:15:37.07\00:15:42.40 Sodom and Gomorrah seeing Him, and immediately the cities 00:15:42.44\00:15:47.24 were totally destroyed. 00:15:47.28\00:15:49.08 Go with me to Revelation 15:2, Revelation 15:2. 00:15:49.11\00:15:55.08 Here it's speaking about a sea, a crystal sea 00:15:55.12\00:15:58.55 in heaven where God lives. 00:15:58.59\00:16:00.69 And I want you to notice a very interesting detail concerning 00:16:00.72\00:16:04.06 this sea of glass. 00:16:04.09\00:16:05.79 It says in Revelation 15:2 00:16:05.83\00:16:08.90 Here you have this crystal clear sea, which is, it looks like 00:16:25.78\00:16:30.79 it's mingled with what? with fire. 00:16:30.82\00:16:33.25 Do you know why it looks like it's mingled with fire? 00:16:33.29\00:16:35.62 Because as you read in Revelation 21 and 22 the throne 00:16:35.66\00:16:40.63 of God stands immediately above the sea of glass. 00:16:40.70\00:16:44.30 And undoubtedly the glory of God is reflected in that sea of 00:16:44.33\00:16:49.54 glass, and therefore the sea of glass looks like it's 00:16:49.57\00:16:52.77 mingled with fire. 00:16:52.81\00:16:54.34 So, in other words, God is a consuming fire. 00:16:54.38\00:16:57.25 The glory of God is a consuming fire against sin. 00:16:57.31\00:17:01.55 And, of course, we've already studied that the glory of God 00:17:01.58\00:17:04.05 also has to do with His character. 00:17:04.12\00:17:06.22 And the wicked have a character totally opposite 00:17:06.25\00:17:09.52 than the character of God. 00:17:09.56\00:17:10.89 Therefore the glory of God, when He reveals Himself, 00:17:10.96\00:17:14.03 consumes the wicked. 00:17:14.10\00:17:15.96 Now let me ask you, If God is the consuming fire, 00:17:16.00\00:17:21.17 and the consuming fire is the glory of God, 00:17:21.20\00:17:24.61 how long has God had this glory? 00:17:24.64\00:17:27.71 I suppose He got it just 6,000 years ago. Of course not. 00:17:29.94\00:17:33.85 How long has God been a glorious God? 00:17:33.92\00:17:36.79 He's been a glorious God forever. 00:17:36.82\00:17:39.12 So let me ask you, Can we speak of God as everlasting fire? 00:17:39.15\00:17:45.19 or He has everlasting glory? Absolutely. 00:17:45.23\00:17:48.86 So it is God, as the fire, who is everlasting. 00:17:48.90\00:17:52.73 Does that mean that that which the fire 00:17:52.77\00:17:55.24 consumes is everlasting? 00:17:55.27\00:17:57.11 Never in the Bible will you find that what the fire 00:17:57.17\00:17:59.81 consumes is everlasting. 00:17:59.84\00:18:01.54 People just assumed that because the Bible uses the expression 00:18:01.58\00:18:04.55 everlasting fire, or eternal fire. 00:18:04.58\00:18:06.61 But it's the fire that's eternal, because God is eternal; 00:18:06.65\00:18:10.02 His glory is eternal. 00:18:10.05\00:18:11.95 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:18:11.99\00:18:13.32 Now I'm going to show from Scripture that the wicked are 00:18:13.39\00:18:18.29 going to be destroyed. 00:18:18.33\00:18:21.70 Notice Malachi 4:1, 3, Malachi 4:1, 3. 00:18:21.73\00:18:28.47 For, behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven; 00:18:28.50\00:18:32.44 and all the proud, yea, all who do wickedly, will be stubble: 00:18:32.47\00:18:38.88 and the day which is coming shall what? burn them up. 00:18:38.91\00:18:43.99 What does burn them up mean? 00:18:44.02\00:18:45.49 It means that it just burns, and burns, and burns, and burns? 00:18:45.52\00:18:48.69 No, to burn up means that ultimately it what? it goes out. 00:18:48.72\00:18:53.43 Exactly. And so it says, And that day, which is coming, 00:18:53.50\00:18:56.93 shall burn them up, says the Lord of hosts, that will leave 00:18:56.97\00:19:01.14 them neither root nor branch. 00:19:01.17\00:19:03.87 Who is the root? Who is the root of all evil? Satan. 00:19:03.94\00:19:08.41 And who are the branches? 00:19:08.44\00:19:10.11 The branches are His followers. 00:19:10.18\00:19:11.85 Jesus says, I am the vine, you are the branches. 00:19:11.88\00:19:14.05 The Devil is the root, and the branches are His followers. 00:19:14.08\00:19:17.42 And now notice verse 3. It says, You shall trample the wicked; 00:19:17.45\00:19:22.09 for they shall be what? ashes under the soles of your feet 00:19:22.12\00:19:27.03 on the day that I do this, says the Lord of hosts. 00:19:27.13\00:19:30.50 What are the wicked going be? 00:19:30.57\00:19:31.93 They're going to be what? ashes. 00:19:31.97\00:19:34.04 How can they be ashes and still be burning forever and ever? 00:19:34.07\00:19:36.84 It's impossible. What are ashes? 00:19:36.91\00:19:39.17 Ashes are the result of everything there is to burn. 00:19:39.21\00:19:43.04 Once the fire has burned everything the result is ashes, 00:19:43.08\00:19:46.92 and the fire what? the fire goes out. 00:19:46.95\00:19:49.25 Well let me ask you, Does the source of the fire go out? 00:19:49.28\00:19:52.09 Absolutely not, because the source of the fire 00:19:52.12\00:19:54.46 is the glory of God. 00:19:54.49\00:19:57.46 Notice also Revelation 20:9, a very interesting expression. 00:19:57.53\00:20:02.20 Revelation 20:9, speaking about the wicked 00:20:02.23\00:20:04.90 surrounding the holy city. It says: 00:20:04.93\00:20:07.00 See the same as Sodom and Gomorrah. 00:20:16.44\00:20:17.78 See, it originates with God. 00:20:19.98\00:20:21.32 You say, What does that word devour mean? 00:20:26.19\00:20:29.39 Well, I'll just give you this reference: Matthew 13:4. 00:20:29.42\00:20:34.66 It speaks about the parable of the sower, and it says there: 00:20:34.73\00:20:39.03 And as he sowed some seed fell by the wayside, and the birds 00:20:39.07\00:20:45.64 came and devoured them. 00:20:45.67\00:20:48.24 How many seeds were left after the birds finished devouring 00:20:48.28\00:20:51.18 them? Absolutely none. 00:20:51.21\00:20:53.08 It's the same word that's used in Revelation. 00:20:53.11\00:20:55.52 To devour means that the fire totally eats them up, 00:20:55.55\00:20:59.42 and totally destroys them. 00:20:59.45\00:21:01.62 Notice Revelation 21:8, what this fire produces. 00:21:01.66\00:21:07.00 It does not produce eternal life in misery. 00:21:07.03\00:21:10.53 It says in Revelation 21:8 00:21:10.57\00:21:12.93 There it is again. 00:21:26.78\00:21:28.12 Do you know what second death is? 00:21:33.92\00:21:35.69 Second death is simply that death from which there 00:21:35.72\00:21:39.56 is no resurrection. 00:21:39.59\00:21:41.66 You see, everybody has been born into this world as living 00:21:43.93\00:21:46.43 their first life, or has lived their first life. 00:21:46.47\00:21:48.57 Those who die in Christ, when Jesus comes they'll resurrect, 00:21:48.60\00:21:54.11 and they'll live, so to speak, their second life. 00:21:54.14\00:21:56.61 They'll live for the second time. 00:21:56.68\00:21:58.01 But the wicked will all die before Jesus comes, 00:21:58.05\00:22:02.88 or at the coming of Jesus, the rest of those who are alive, 00:22:02.92\00:22:05.55 and they will remain dead during the thousand years. 00:22:05.59\00:22:08.69 After the thousand years they will what? they will resurrect. 00:22:08.72\00:22:12.69 And then they're going to be judged by God, 00:22:12.73\00:22:15.13 as we studied previously. 00:22:15.16\00:22:16.50 And then they're going to be what? destroyed with the fire. 00:22:16.53\00:22:20.44 And that is called what? second death. 00:22:20.50\00:22:23.41 You can't have a second death unless you had the first death. 00:22:23.47\00:22:25.87 So how many deaths are God's people going to suffer? 00:22:25.91\00:22:28.51 Only one death. How many deaths are the wicked going to suffer? 00:22:28.54\00:22:33.21 They are going to suffer two deaths. 00:22:33.25\00:22:36.12 In fact Jeremiah 51 says they shall sleep an eternal sleep, 00:22:36.15\00:22:40.92 and they shall not awake. 00:22:40.96\00:22:44.09 Now, this might surprise you, but the Bible teaches that it's 00:22:44.13\00:22:50.60 the righteous who are going to live in the midst 00:22:50.63\00:22:52.83 of the everlasting fire. 00:22:52.87\00:22:54.20 You say, Wait a minute, Pastor. 00:22:54.24\00:22:56.40 Are you saying that the righteous are going to hell? 00:22:56.44\00:22:58.57 No, I'm not saying the righteous are going to hell. 00:22:58.61\00:23:01.04 I'm saying that the righteous are going to live in the midst 00:23:01.08\00:23:04.35 of the presence of God. 00:23:04.38\00:23:06.01 They're going to live in the midst of the eternal fire, 00:23:06.05\00:23:09.88 and they're not going to be burned, because they have a 00:23:09.92\00:23:12.05 fireproof character. 00:23:12.09\00:23:13.46 You say, Where does the Bible teach such a thing? 00:23:13.49\00:23:15.62 Go with me to Isaiah 33:14, 15, Isaiah 33:14, 15. 00:23:15.66\00:23:21.70 The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness has 00:23:21.73\00:23:26.37 seized the hypocrites. 00:23:26.40\00:23:27.74 And then the question is asked, 00:23:27.77\00:23:29.20 Who can dwell with the devouring fire? 00:23:41.02\00:23:43.35 Who can dwell with the everlasting burnings? 00:23:43.39\00:23:46.42 What would most Christians say? 00:23:46.45\00:23:48.06 The sinful, wicked people. 00:23:48.09\00:23:51.79 But notice the answer that Isaiah gives. 00:23:51.83\00:23:53.96 Isn't that interesting? 00:24:14.75\00:24:16.55 The Christian world has it the wrong way around. 00:24:16.58\00:24:20.56 They say that the wicked are going to live in the 00:24:20.59\00:24:22.96 fire forever and ever. 00:24:22.99\00:24:24.33 The Bible says that the righteous will live the 00:24:24.36\00:24:26.83 presence of the eternal fire forever, 00:24:26.90\00:24:28.96 and they will not be burned. 00:24:29.00\00:24:30.33 They'll be like the three young men that were cast 00:24:30.37\00:24:32.57 into the fiery furnace. 00:24:32.60\00:24:34.00 You see, they had the character of Jesus Christ, 00:24:34.04\00:24:37.17 and therefore the fires did not consume them. 00:24:37.21\00:24:39.41 That was common little old human fire, but we're talking 00:24:39.44\00:24:43.31 here about the devouring fire of the glory of God. 00:24:43.35\00:24:46.51 And God's people will be able to dwell in the midst of the 00:24:46.55\00:24:49.85 devouring fire and not be consumed. 00:24:49.88\00:24:52.22 Now you say, Well, Pastor, if you say that Satan and his 00:24:52.25\00:24:55.86 angels, and the wicked are not going to burn forever, 00:24:55.89\00:24:58.63 the question is, Are they going to burn for a short period, 00:24:58.66\00:25:03.67 for a long period? 00:25:03.70\00:25:05.03 How long are they going to burn? 00:25:05.07\00:25:06.94 Is everybody going to suffer the same length? 00:25:06.97\00:25:09.77 Well, do you know the Bible tells us that the punishment 00:25:09.80\00:25:14.34 upon the wicked will be according to their what? 00:25:14.38\00:25:18.45 according to their works. 00:25:18.48\00:25:20.95 Let's notice Luke 12:47, 48, Luke 12:47, 28. 00:25:20.98\00:25:27.09 This is a parable of Jesus, and He says: And that servant, 00:25:27.16\00:25:30.76 who knew his master's will, and did not prepare himself, 00:25:30.83\00:25:34.63 or do according to his will, shall be beaten with what? 00:25:34.66\00:25:37.63 many stripes. But he who did not know, yet committed things 00:25:37.67\00:25:42.17 deserving of stripes shall be beaten with what? with few. 00:25:42.20\00:25:46.78 For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be 00:25:46.84\00:25:51.01 required; and to whom much has been committed, 00:25:51.05\00:25:55.62 of him they will ask the more. 00:25:55.65\00:25:58.32 Let me ask you, Is the final punishment going to be according 00:25:58.35\00:26:02.06 to the sinfulness of the individual? Absolutely. 00:26:02.09\00:26:04.99 Notice Revelation 20:13, Revelation 20:13. 00:26:05.03\00:26:09.93 This is after the millennium. It says: 00:26:09.96\00:26:12.30 So the punishment that is going to be meted out is according 00:26:24.61\00:26:28.45 to the works which were performed by the 00:26:28.48\00:26:31.35 individuals who are lost. 00:26:31.39\00:26:32.72 Let me illustrate the point. 00:26:32.75\00:26:34.32 How many of you think that it would be just on the part of 00:26:34.36\00:26:37.53 God to punish Adolph Hitler, and a common ordinary sinner 00:26:37.56\00:26:43.77 with the same punishment? 00:26:43.83\00:26:45.63 Would that be justice? 00:26:45.67\00:26:47.14 That would absolutely not be justice. 00:26:47.20\00:26:49.24 That would be like an individual who goes before a judge 00:26:49.27\00:26:52.77 because he's gone through a red light, 00:26:52.81\00:26:54.24 and another individual goes before the same judge 00:26:54.28\00:26:56.81 because he killed somebody. 00:26:56.85\00:26:58.25 And the judge says, I condemn both of you 00:26:58.28\00:27:00.48 to the electric chair. 00:27:00.55\00:27:01.88 You know, the punishment depends upon the works that the 00:27:01.92\00:27:08.42 individual has committed. 00:27:08.46\00:27:10.06 This means that Satan and his angels, and the wicked 00:27:10.09\00:27:12.56 will suffer differing lengths of punishment 00:27:12.59\00:27:16.20 according to their sinfulness, or according to their works. 00:27:16.23\00:27:20.27 Now you say, But what about forever? 00:27:20.34\00:27:23.81 Doesn't the Bible say that they're going to 00:27:23.84\00:27:25.34 burn forever and ever? 00:27:25.37\00:27:26.71 Well, we've already noticed that they've going to be reduced 00:27:26.78\00:27:28.71 to ashes, so they must not burn forever. 00:27:28.74\00:27:30.85 So what does forever and ever mean? 00:27:30.88\00:27:34.05 Well, let's read the text again. Revelation 20:10. 00:27:34.12\00:27:38.39 You say, What part of forever and ever don't you understand? 00:27:51.67\00:27:54.10 Well, I decided one day that I would go to the library, 00:27:54.14\00:27:59.47 the theological library at Andrews University, in Michigan, 00:27:59.51\00:28:02.44 and I would look at what commentators have to say about 00:28:02.48\00:28:06.01 the words forever. 00:28:06.05\00:28:07.38 In Hebrew the word is olam, and in Greek the word is aion. 00:28:07.45\00:28:11.65 And so I decided I would see what the experts in Hebrew 00:28:11.69\00:28:16.32 and Greek had to say about these words that are 00:28:16.36\00:28:19.36 used: forever and ever. 00:28:19.39\00:28:20.73 And I discovered something very interesting. 00:28:20.76\00:28:22.43 These scholars say that forever means a long period of time 00:28:22.46\00:28:28.37 whose end cannot be seen, but it does not mean that the 00:28:28.40\00:28:32.47 period of time does not have an end. 00:28:32.51\00:28:34.34 Allow me to read you some statements from some of these 00:28:34.38\00:28:38.15 scholars so that you see what the expression forever means. 00:28:38.18\00:28:41.75 And, by the way, the version in Spanish, 00:28:41.78\00:28:44.82 Version Reina Valera 1960 says, for centuries and 00:28:44.85\00:28:49.66 centuries, actually Por los siglos de los siglos. 00:28:49.69\00:28:52.99 Literally in Greek it means for the ages of the ages. 00:28:53.03\00:28:57.33 Now let's read a statement by Allan MacRae. 00:28:57.37\00:29:01.10 He was president and professor of Old Testament Theology 00:29:01.14\00:29:04.67 at the Biblical School of Theology 00:29:04.71\00:29:06.61 in Hatfield, Pennsylvania. 00:29:06.64\00:29:08.04 Notice what he had to say: The LXX, which is the Septuagint, 00:29:08.08\00:29:12.11 the Greek translation of the Old Testament. 00:29:12.15\00:29:13.85 The Septuagint generally translates olam, 00:29:13.88\00:29:17.12 that's the Hebrew word, by aion, that's the Greek word, 00:29:17.15\00:29:20.42 which has essentially the same range of meaning. 00:29:20.49\00:29:23.76 He's saying that olam and aion mean the same thing. 00:29:23.79\00:29:26.93 Now notice this: that neither the Hebrew, nor the Greek word 00:29:26.96\00:29:32.70 itself contains the idea of endlessness... 00:29:32.73\00:29:36.37 See neither one of these words contains the idea of what? 00:29:36.40\00:29:40.01 endlessness... is shown both by the fact that they sometimes 00:29:40.08\00:29:44.15 refer to events or conditions that occurred at a definite 00:29:44.18\00:29:47.32 point in the past. 00:29:47.35\00:29:48.68 In other words, they're not eternal because they 00:29:48.72\00:29:50.52 had a point of beginning, and also by the fact that sometimes 00:29:50.59\00:29:53.89 it is thought desirable to repeat the word, 00:29:53.96\00:29:56.19 not merely saying forever, but forever and ever. 00:29:56.22\00:29:59.69 Also two other scholars, Multon and Millgan, 00:29:59.73\00:30:03.67 they are experts in Greek. 00:30:03.73\00:30:05.77 Notice what they have to say. 00:30:05.80\00:30:07.20 In general the word, the word aion, where you get the word 00:30:07.24\00:30:11.21 forever from in the New Testament, in general the word 00:30:11.24\00:30:15.18 depicts that of which the horizon is not in view. 00:30:15.21\00:30:19.15 In other words, the horizon is distant. 00:30:19.18\00:30:21.68 Whether the horizon be at an infinite distance, 00:30:21.72\00:30:25.99 or whether it lies no further than the span of Caesar's life. 00:30:26.02\00:30:30.73 In other words, the word forever is used for the 00:30:30.79\00:30:33.03 span of Caesar's life. 00:30:33.06\00:30:34.36 But it's also used, especially with regards to God, 00:30:34.40\00:30:38.67 in terms of eternal distance, that which has no end. 00:30:38.70\00:30:41.90 But it refers to God, it's not referring to 00:30:41.94\00:30:44.34 corruptible created things. 00:30:44.37\00:30:46.31 One further statement from Gerhard Kittel, who was the 00:30:46.34\00:30:50.61 editor of the famous theological wordbook of the Old Testament. 00:30:50.68\00:30:54.25 He had this to say: In the plural aion, that's the word 00:30:54.28\00:30:59.15 forever, the aion formula, the meaning of aion merges into 00:30:59.19\00:31:05.09 that of a long but limited stretch of time. 00:31:05.13\00:31:09.03 So notice the word means a long but what? 00:31:09.06\00:31:11.40 limited stretch of time. 00:31:11.43\00:31:13.23 In particular aion, that's the word forever, in this sense 00:31:13.30\00:31:17.94 signifies the time of duration of the world. 00:31:17.97\00:31:20.84 So the word forever can mean the period of 00:31:20.88\00:31:22.61 duration of this world. 00:31:22.64\00:31:24.01 That is to say time as limited by creation and conclusion. 00:31:24.05\00:31:30.19 So the word forever can mean the time between creation 00:31:30.25\00:31:32.59 and the conclusion. 00:31:32.62\00:31:33.96 He continues saying, At this point we are confronted by the 00:31:34.02\00:31:37.66 remarkable fact that in the Bible the same word, aion, 00:31:37.69\00:31:42.33 is used to indicate two things which are 00:31:42.36\00:31:45.80 profoundly antithetical, namely the eternity of God... 00:31:45.83\00:31:50.64 See, from God's perspective, the eternity of God, 00:31:50.67\00:31:54.01 and the duration of the world. 00:31:54.04\00:31:56.21 Now is the duration of the world limited? Yes. 00:31:56.24\00:32:00.05 Is the eternity of God something that has no beginning or end? 00:32:00.12\00:32:03.82 Yes, but the same word is used for both. 00:32:03.89\00:32:07.96 Now what does this mean? 00:32:07.99\00:32:10.43 It means that when the word aion is used with reference to 00:32:10.46\00:32:14.36 God, it means everlasting. 00:32:14.40\00:32:16.87 But when it's used with reference to created things, 00:32:16.93\00:32:20.10 it means a long, indefinite period that 00:32:20.14\00:32:23.17 definitely has an end. 00:32:23.20\00:32:25.01 He continues saying: This two-fold sense, 00:32:25.04\00:32:27.74 which aion shares with the Hebrew olam... 00:32:27.78\00:32:30.95 See both the Old Testament and New Testament 00:32:30.98\00:32:32.75 words share this idea. 00:32:32.78\00:32:34.52 ...points back to a concept to an eternity in which eternity is 00:32:34.55\00:32:39.62 identified with the duration of the world. 00:32:39.65\00:32:42.16 So how long is eternity? the duration of the world, 00:32:42.19\00:32:45.79 says this scholar. 00:32:45.83\00:32:47.13 Now the question is, Is Satan going to burn out? 00:32:47.20\00:32:50.30 He's obviously going to burn a long period of time, 00:32:50.33\00:32:53.37 because the expression, forever is used with regards 00:32:53.40\00:32:56.54 to his destruction. 00:32:56.57\00:32:57.91 It doesn't mean that he's going to exist forever and ever, 00:32:57.94\00:33:00.78 and ever throughout eternity, and he's going to burn forever, 00:33:00.81\00:33:03.21 and he's never going to go out. 00:33:03.24\00:33:04.65 It means that he's going to burn for a long period of time; 00:33:04.68\00:33:08.22 whose end cannot be discerned or cannot be seen. 00:33:08.25\00:33:11.69 As it says in the Spanish version, 00:33:11.72\00:33:13.46 Por los siglos de los siglos. 00:33:13.49\00:33:15.52 Now do you know that the Bible says that Satan is going to be 00:33:15.56\00:33:20.00 reduced to ashes as well as the wicked? 00:33:20.03\00:33:22.20 Go with me to Ezekiel 28:18, 19, Ezekiel 28:18, 19. 00:33:22.23\00:33:30.37 Here is a prophecy speaking about this covering cherub 00:33:30.41\00:33:35.61 who was beautiful. 00:33:35.64\00:33:37.01 It says, You defiled your sanctuaries by the multitude 00:33:37.05\00:33:39.85 of your iniquities, by the iniquity of your trading; 00:33:39.88\00:33:44.32 therefore I brought fire from your midst. 00:33:44.35\00:33:47.92 It what? What's the next word? 00:33:47.96\00:33:51.46 It devoured you, and it turned you to ashes. 00:33:51.49\00:33:58.23 Is the Devil going to be reduced to ashes? Yes. 00:33:58.27\00:34:01.54 So is he going to burn out? Absolutely. 00:34:01.57\00:34:05.11 So it says: I turned you to ashes upon the earth 00:34:05.14\00:34:09.51 in the sight of all who saw you. 00:34:09.54\00:34:11.71 All who knew you among the peoples are astonished at you: 00:34:11.75\00:34:15.62 you have become a horror, and shall be no more forever. 00:34:15.65\00:34:22.99 In what sense is the fire everlasting? in the sense that 00:34:23.02\00:34:28.60 the glory of God is everlasting that destroys Satan. 00:34:28.63\00:34:32.57 But also the fire will destroy Satan, 00:34:32.60\00:34:35.67 and he will never exist forever. 00:34:35.70\00:34:37.67 Are you understanding? 00:34:37.71\00:34:39.04 In other words the fire produces everlasting results. 00:34:39.07\00:34:42.84 But even after Satan goes out, God will still have His glory, 00:34:42.88\00:34:46.61 He is still the consuming, everlasting fire. 00:34:46.68\00:34:49.82 We've already read that God is going to 00:34:51.79\00:34:54.49 eradicate root and branch. 00:34:54.52\00:34:57.89 Let's read that again. 00:34:57.93\00:34:59.26 Malachi 4:1, 3. For, behold, the day is coming, 00:34:59.29\00:35:04.27 burning like an oven; and all the proud, yes, 00:35:04.30\00:35:06.74 all who do wickedly will be stubble: and the day which is 00:35:06.77\00:35:09.74 coming shall burn them up, says the Lord of hosts, 00:35:09.77\00:35:12.64 that will leave them neither root nor branch. 00:35:12.67\00:35:16.01 Root is the Devil and the branches are his followers. 00:35:16.04\00:35:18.15 Verse 3. You shall trample the wicked; for they shall be ashes 00:35:18.18\00:35:23.28 under the soles of your feet on the day that I do this, 00:35:23.32\00:35:27.72 says the Lord of hosts. 00:35:27.76\00:35:30.13 But now I'm sure that you're wondering how long the Devil 00:35:30.16\00:35:35.30 and his angels are going to be burning. 00:35:35.33\00:35:37.33 How long are the wicked, who will drink the cup of the wine 00:35:37.37\00:35:41.54 of the wrath of God, without mixture of mercy, 00:35:41.57\00:35:44.17 how long are they going to be burning in the fire before they 00:35:44.21\00:35:47.78 actually burn out and cease to exist? 00:35:47.81\00:35:50.85 The answer to this question, particularly with regards to the 00:35:50.91\00:35:56.15 Devil, is found in an ancient ceremonial that God established 00:35:56.18\00:36:01.59 in the Hebrew religious system, in the day of 00:36:01.62\00:36:05.83 atonement ceremony. 00:36:05.86\00:36:07.86 Go with me to Leviticus 16, Leviticus 16:7. 00:36:07.86\00:36:14.24 And you remember in our last lecture asked the question, 00:36:14.27\00:36:16.50 Did Jesus suffer the second death? 00:36:16.54\00:36:18.94 We said that the second death is death from which there is no 00:36:21.14\00:36:24.48 what? no resurrection. 00:36:24.51\00:36:26.75 Did Jesus resurrect? 00:36:26.82\00:36:28.15 So did He suffer the second death? No. 00:36:29.22\00:36:32.19 And let me say it this way, Jesus suffered the 00:36:32.22\00:36:36.32 experience of second death. 00:36:36.36\00:36:38.06 He felt like the wicked will feel outside the holy city 00:36:38.09\00:36:41.53 when they realize that their life is going to be snuffed out 00:36:41.56\00:36:43.97 forever, and they will forever cease to exist. 00:36:44.03\00:36:47.10 Jesus felt the anguish of separation from God, 00:36:47.14\00:36:50.67 the anguish of knowing that His life was coming to an end. 00:36:50.71\00:36:55.14 In fact, in Desire of Ages, that magnificent book, it says that 00:36:55.18\00:36:58.68 He could not see beyond the portals of the tomb. 00:36:58.71\00:37:01.48 He thought that sin was so great and so offensive to His Father 00:37:01.52\00:37:07.29 that the separation from His Father would be eternal. 00:37:07.32\00:37:10.16 In other words, Jesus felt the anguish of everlasting 00:37:10.19\00:37:13.66 separation from God. 00:37:13.73\00:37:15.03 But the sins that He bore were not His. 00:37:15.06\00:37:18.40 The sins that He bore were the sins of the world. 00:37:18.43\00:37:22.30 So you say, If He didn't suffer second death, then sin wasn't 00:37:24.21\00:37:28.01 paid for, because the wages of sin is death, second death. 00:37:28.04\00:37:31.31 Well, here's where the ceremonial of the day of 00:37:31.35\00:37:34.12 atonement comes in. 00:37:34.15\00:37:35.55 Leviticus 16:7. It's speaking about two goats. 00:37:35.58\00:37:40.99 They were chosen on the day of atonement. 00:37:41.02\00:37:42.39 And it says, He shall take the two goats and present them 00:37:42.42\00:37:46.80 before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of meetings. 00:37:46.83\00:37:51.33 So two goats were chosen. 00:37:51.37\00:37:52.70 One goat was for the Lord, and the other goat was for Azazel. 00:37:52.73\00:37:58.97 Now let me say that in Hebrew thinking, in Jewish thinking, 00:37:59.01\00:38:03.31 in fact if you go to the apocryphal book of Enoch, 00:38:03.38\00:38:05.85 you'll find that the Jews believed that Azazel 00:38:05.88\00:38:10.62 was the prince of demons. 00:38:10.65\00:38:12.82 They believed that Azazel was the Devil himself. 00:38:12.85\00:38:16.26 And now I want you to notice Leviticus 16:20-22. 00:38:16.29\00:38:20.96 But before I read these verses, let me ask you this question: 00:38:21.00\00:38:23.67 What happened in the daily ceremonial in the sanctuary? 00:38:23.70\00:38:26.60 An animal was sacrificed. 00:38:29.74\00:38:31.67 What happened with the blood? 00:38:31.71\00:38:33.04 The blood was taken into the sanctuary, 00:38:33.07\00:38:36.44 and sin was transferred from the sinner, who put his hand 00:38:36.48\00:38:39.81 on the head of the animal, and then the animal was slain. 00:38:39.85\00:38:43.22 And then through the blood the sin was transferred where? 00:38:43.25\00:38:46.59 into the sanctuary. 00:38:46.62\00:38:47.96 So let me ask you, Were those sins that were transferred into 00:38:47.99\00:38:51.09 the sanctuary forgiven sins? Yeh. 00:38:51.13\00:38:54.86 The sins that Jesus transfers to the sanctuary 00:38:54.93\00:38:57.43 are forgiven sins. 00:38:57.47\00:38:58.80 Isn't that comforting news? 00:38:58.83\00:39:00.67 You know, He's not registering those things up there 00:39:00.70\00:39:04.04 to hold them against you. 00:39:04.07\00:39:05.41 What God is doing is He's introducing sin into the 00:39:05.44\00:39:09.04 sanctuary covered by the blood of the sacrifice; 00:39:09.08\00:39:13.05 covered by the blood of Jesus. 00:39:13.08\00:39:14.58 In other words, forgiven sins are placed in the sanctuary. 00:39:14.62\00:39:17.85 And what did that do with the sanctuary? 00:39:17.89\00:39:19.25 It contaminated the sanctuary. 00:39:19.29\00:39:21.96 It defiled the sanctuary. 00:39:21.99\00:39:23.39 If you don't believe it read Hebrews 9:23. 00:39:23.46\00:39:26.16 It says that the heavenly things had to be cleansed. 00:39:26.19\00:39:29.26 Daniel 8:14 says, Unto 2300 days and the sanctuary 00:39:29.30\00:39:34.04 shall be cleansed. 00:39:34.14\00:39:35.47 In other words, all of the sins that went into the sanctuary, 00:39:35.50\00:39:38.97 through the blood, eventually those sins had to be cleansed 00:39:39.01\00:39:41.71 from the sanctuary. 00:39:41.74\00:39:43.08 Notice Leviticus 16:20-22. 00:39:43.11\00:39:46.92 This is what happened on the day of atonement. 00:39:46.95\00:39:48.65 And this is a very important point. 00:39:48.68\00:39:51.55 And when He has made an end of atoning for the holy place, 00:39:51.59\00:39:55.52 that is atoning for the sanctuary. 00:39:55.56\00:39:57.03 Let me ask you, the scapegoat ceremony... 00:39:57.63\00:39:59.33 Did that take place after the sanctuary had been cleansed, 00:39:59.36\00:40:02.76 or did it take place before the sanctuary was cleansed? 00:40:02.80\00:40:06.00 After the sanctuary was cleansed. 00:40:06.03\00:40:09.04 After the first goat had been sacrificed and died. 00:40:09.07\00:40:11.77 The first goat represents the sacrifice of Jesus. 00:40:11.81\00:40:13.94 In other words, after the first goat was sacrificed for the sins 00:40:13.98\00:40:16.75 of the people, the high priest cleansed the sanctuary, 00:40:16.81\00:40:20.88 and then he came to the second goat. So it says: 00:40:20.92\00:40:24.25 The what kind of goat? the live goat. 00:40:32.99\00:40:35.66 So whatever is done with this goat, 00:40:35.70\00:40:37.30 this goat is not dying for sin. 00:40:37.33\00:40:39.73 This goat is what? alive. 00:40:39.77\00:40:42.34 And without shedding of blood there is no remission of sin. 00:40:42.37\00:40:46.17 Verse 21. 00:40:46.21\00:40:47.54 Which, let me ask you, which iniquities, 00:41:05.63\00:41:09.06 which transgressions and which sins was he placing on the 00:41:09.10\00:41:11.87 head of the scapegoat? 00:41:11.90\00:41:13.23 All of those that he was bringing from where? 00:41:13.30\00:41:16.71 From the sanctuary that had been deposited there all year. 00:41:16.77\00:41:19.91 And by putting his hands on the head of the goat, 00:41:19.94\00:41:22.74 and confessing the sins on the head of the goat, 00:41:22.78\00:41:25.08 what is he doing? He's transferring the sins to Azazel, 00:41:25.11\00:41:29.62 the live scapegoat. And it says: 00:41:29.65\00:41:33.82 So where was he sent? into the wilderness. Notice: 00:41:44.23\00:41:46.87 And there was a special person chosen to take him 00:41:50.24\00:41:52.67 to the wilderness. 00:41:52.71\00:41:54.04 A wilderness and a what? uninhabited land. 00:42:02.95\00:42:06.12 In other words, a place where there was no one living. 00:42:06.15\00:42:08.69 Now let me ask you, What happened with the sins of those 00:42:14.36\00:42:19.17 who had not placed their sins in the sanctuary? 00:42:19.20\00:42:21.47 those who had not actually repented of sin 00:42:21.50\00:42:24.41 and confessed their sins? 00:42:24.44\00:42:25.77 Were all of those sins placed on the head of the scapegoat? 00:42:25.81\00:42:28.58 No. Notice Leviticus 23, Leviticus 23. 00:42:29.31\00:42:32.95 Those who did not claim... 00:42:32.98\00:42:34.92 Listen to this. This is important. 00:42:34.95\00:42:36.42 Those who did not claim the blood of the Lord's goat; 00:42:36.45\00:42:40.16 those who did not confess sin, and repent of sin, 00:42:40.22\00:42:45.26 and have their sin go into the sanctuary covered by the blood, 00:42:45.29\00:42:48.76 those individuals suffered the penalty for their own sins. 00:42:48.80\00:42:53.13 Their sins were not placed on the head of the scapegoat. 00:42:53.17\00:42:55.77 In other words, they died for their own sins. 00:42:55.80\00:42:58.87 Notice Leviticus 23:29, 30, where it says this very clearly. 00:42:58.91\00:43:04.38 For any person who is not afflicted in soul, 00:43:04.41\00:43:09.65 on that same day shall be cut off from his people. 00:43:09.68\00:43:14.76 And any person who does any work on that same day, 00:43:14.79\00:43:19.43 that person I will what? destroy from among his people. 00:43:19.46\00:43:25.53 So it was only all of the sins that entered into the sanctuary 00:43:25.57\00:43:30.41 through the blood, sins that people had repented of 00:43:30.47\00:43:34.64 and confessed, that were placed upon the head of the scapegoat. 00:43:34.68\00:43:39.25 And then the scapegoat was sent out into the wilderness 00:43:39.28\00:43:42.88 to a non-inhabited land. 00:43:42.92\00:43:44.72 What was God trying to teach through this? 00:43:44.75\00:43:48.76 I want to read a couple of statements from a woman 00:43:48.79\00:43:55.06 who wrote some amazing things. 00:43:55.10\00:43:59.03 Her name is Ellen White. 00:43:59.07\00:44:01.77 You say, Why are you reading from Ellen White? 00:44:01.80\00:44:04.71 Well, I'm going to read her statements, and I'm going to 00:44:04.74\00:44:07.41 tell you where in the Bible is found what she says. 00:44:07.48\00:44:10.58 Because she definitely knows what she's talking about, 00:44:10.65\00:44:13.82 and she has the backing of Scripture to explain 00:44:13.85\00:44:16.69 this specific point. 00:44:16.72\00:44:18.05 The first statement is found in Early Writings, page 290. 00:44:18.09\00:44:22.49 This is something that she wrote very early in her ministry. 00:44:22.52\00:44:25.53 She says this: Then I saw thrones, and Jesus and the 00:44:25.56\00:44:31.90 redeemed saints sat upon them. 00:44:31.93\00:44:34.27 And the saints reigned as kings and priests unto God. 00:44:34.30\00:44:38.61 Let me ask you, Where is that found in the Bible? 00:44:38.64\00:44:40.38 Revelation 20:4. During the millennium God's people will 00:44:40.44\00:44:45.45 reign as kings and priests with Christ. 00:44:45.48\00:44:48.35 And the Bible says that judgment was given to them. 00:44:48.38\00:44:52.02 Notice what it continues saying. 00:44:52.05\00:44:53.56 Christ, in union with His people, judged the wicked dead. 00:44:53.62\00:44:57.86 Is that Biblical? Judgment was committed to them, 00:44:57.89\00:45:01.73 it says in Revelation 20:4, comparing their acts with the 00:45:01.76\00:45:05.93 statute book, the Word of God, and deciding every case 00:45:05.97\00:45:10.41 according to the deeds done in the body. 00:45:10.44\00:45:12.37 Is that Biblical? Yes. 00:45:12.41\00:45:15.01 Revelation 20:11, 12 says that they will be judged 00:45:15.04\00:45:18.28 according to their works. 00:45:18.31\00:45:19.71 Now notice, Then they meted out to the wicked the portion 00:45:19.75\00:45:27.69 which they must suffer according to their works. 00:45:27.72\00:45:30.99 Is that Biblical? If you read 1 Corinthians 6:2, 3, 00:45:31.03\00:45:37.57 which we're not going to take the time to read, it says, 00:45:37.60\00:45:39.87 Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? 00:45:39.90\00:45:44.17 It even says, Do you not know that the saints 00:45:44.21\00:45:47.14 will judge angels? 00:45:47.18\00:45:48.51 It has to be the wicked angels, because righteous 00:45:48.54\00:45:51.88 angels need no judgment. 00:45:51.91\00:45:53.25 And so she says, Once again, then they meted out to the 00:45:53.28\00:46:00.49 wicked the portion which they must suffer 00:46:00.52\00:46:02.06 according to their works. 00:46:02.09\00:46:03.56 And it was written against their names in the book of death. 00:46:03.59\00:46:06.56 Satan and his angels were judged by Jesus and the saints. 00:46:06.59\00:46:10.47 That's Biblical: 2 Corinthians 6:2, 3. 00:46:10.50\00:46:14.74 Now listen to this: Satan's punishment was to be far greater 00:46:14.77\00:46:20.71 than that of those whom he had deceived. 00:46:20.78\00:46:24.35 Is that just? Is that justice? Absolutely. 00:46:24.38\00:46:28.72 It says, It was going to be far greater. 00:46:28.75\00:46:32.39 Now what does that mean? in intensity or in length? 00:46:32.42\00:46:34.82 Let's continue reading. 00:46:34.86\00:46:36.19 Satan's punishment was to be far greater than that of those 00:46:36.22\00:46:41.16 whom he had deceived. 00:46:41.20\00:46:42.53 His suffering would so far exceed theirs as to bear no 00:46:42.56\00:46:49.54 comparison with it. 00:46:49.57\00:46:50.91 That seems to give the impression that he might be 00:46:53.14\00:46:55.08 even suffering for centuries. 00:46:55.11\00:46:56.48 Now I'm not putting any time period on it, 00:46:56.51\00:47:01.25 but she says that his punishment would far exceed 00:47:01.28\00:47:05.59 theirs, as to bear no comparison with it. 00:47:05.62\00:47:08.56 Does the Bible say that the Devil is going to suffer for 00:47:08.59\00:47:12.23 a very long period? forever and ever? 00:47:12.26\00:47:14.10 Yes, that means an extremely long period of time, 00:47:14.13\00:47:16.67 whose end is not in view. 00:47:16.70\00:47:18.27 And then she continues saying, After all those whom he had 00:47:18.30\00:47:23.10 deceived had perished, Satan was still to live 00:47:23.14\00:47:28.11 and suffer on much longer. 00:47:28.14\00:47:31.28 You say, Why is that? 00:47:31.31\00:47:32.65 Why would that happen? 00:47:32.68\00:47:34.02 You know, that's, some people say, Oh, that's terrible that 00:47:34.05\00:47:36.62 God would do that to the Devil for such a long period of time. 00:47:36.69\00:47:39.02 Let me tell you what, it's much better than believing that God 00:47:39.05\00:47:41.69 is going to cast the Devil, and all of the wicked, in the fires 00:47:41.72\00:47:44.39 of hell, and they're going to burn forever. 00:47:44.43\00:47:46.06 That's not justice. 00:47:46.09\00:47:49.06 Justice would be that each one is punished 00:47:49.10\00:47:52.57 according to his what? according to his works. 00:47:52.60\00:47:55.37 Is the Devil more guilty? Yes. 00:47:55.40\00:47:57.37 He's the originator, and he's the instigator of sin. 00:47:57.41\00:48:00.81 Now there's another statement. 00:48:00.84\00:48:02.21 This is an amazing statement that's found in Early Writings, 00:48:02.24\00:48:05.75 pages 293 and 294. 00:48:05.78\00:48:07.92 She says this: I saw that some were quickly destroyed. 00:48:07.95\00:48:13.59 Who would be the ones that are quickly destroyed? 00:48:13.62\00:48:15.82 Those who led sinful lives, but, you know, they were not 00:48:15.86\00:48:20.73 sinners in the sense of Adolph Hitler, or Sadaam Hussein, 00:48:20.76\00:48:26.47 or any of these dictators that have the blood probably of 00:48:26.50\00:48:29.57 hundreds of thousands on their hands. 00:48:29.60\00:48:31.54 She says, I saw that some were quickly destroyed 00:48:31.57\00:48:35.41 while others suffered longer. 00:48:35.44\00:48:37.95 They were punished according to their deeds done in the body. 00:48:37.98\00:48:42.32 That's Biblical. Some were many days consuming. 00:48:42.35\00:48:45.72 Notice some of the wicked were many what? many days consuming. 00:48:45.75\00:48:50.46 And just as long as there was a portion of them unconsumed, 00:48:50.53\00:48:54.30 all the sense of suffering remained. 00:48:54.30\00:48:56.36 Let me ask you, Is this going to be torment? 00:48:56.40\00:48:58.73 The Bible says that they would be tormented. Yes, absolutely. 00:48:58.77\00:49:03.57 For a very extremely long period of time 00:49:03.64\00:49:06.21 there's going to be torment. 00:49:06.24\00:49:07.61 Don't think that it's not going to exist. 00:49:07.64\00:49:09.08 The torment is not going to be, I don't think primarily the pain 00:49:09.11\00:49:13.05 and the anguish of the fire, it's going to be the anguish of 00:49:13.08\00:49:16.48 knowing that their life is going to be snuffed out, 00:49:16.52\00:49:18.72 and they're never going to be able to live again 00:49:18.75\00:49:20.89 in the presence of God. 00:49:20.92\00:49:22.29 And so it says, Some were many days consuming. 00:49:22.32\00:49:25.23 And just as long as there was a portion of them unconsumed, 00:49:25.26\00:49:28.63 all the sense of suffering remained. 00:49:28.66\00:49:31.30 Said the angel, The worm of life shall not die. 00:49:31.33\00:49:34.27 Their fire shall not be quenched as long as there is the least 00:49:34.30\00:49:38.44 particle for it to prey upon. 00:49:38.47\00:49:40.28 And now notice this: Satan and his angels suffered long. 00:49:40.31\00:49:45.58 And why did they suffer long? 00:49:45.61\00:49:47.75 Why do they suffer much longer than the wicked? 00:49:47.78\00:49:49.78 Why is it described as forever and ever, which means an 00:49:49.82\00:49:53.02 extremely long period of time? 00:49:53.05\00:49:54.79 You know, the existence of the world, like we've noticed from 00:49:54.82\00:49:57.63 some of those scholars, is used, the word forever to describe 00:49:57.66\00:50:01.50 the time span of the existence of the world. 00:50:01.53\00:50:03.53 Notice, Satan and his angels suffered long. 00:50:03.57\00:50:07.44 Satan bore not only the weight and punishment of his own sins, 00:50:07.50\00:50:14.08 but also of the sins of the redeemed hosts, 00:50:14.14\00:50:17.01 which had been placed upon him. 00:50:17.05\00:50:19.25 Is that Biblical? Where is that? 00:50:19.28\00:50:22.65 In Leviticus 16. All of the confessed sins that went into 00:50:22.68\00:50:27.79 the sanctuary were the ones that were brought out and placed 00:50:27.82\00:50:30.59 on the head of the scapegoat. 00:50:30.63\00:50:31.96 By the way, where is this fulfilled? 00:50:31.99\00:50:33.56 It's fulfilled in Revelation 20, when a powerful angel descends 00:50:33.60\00:50:38.70 from heaven; that's the fit man of Leviticus 16. 00:50:38.73\00:50:42.04 And the Devil is exiled in a world that is a wilderness, 00:50:42.07\00:50:46.71 in a world where all of the wicked have died; 00:50:46.74\00:50:49.41 a non-inhabited land. 00:50:49.44\00:50:51.25 This happens during the thousand years, during the millennium. 00:50:51.28\00:50:54.18 And then, of course, he's destroyed after the millennium. 00:50:54.25\00:50:56.72 And so it says, Satan and his angels suffered long. 00:50:56.75\00:50:59.02 Satan bore not only the weight and punishment of his own sins, 00:50:59.05\00:51:02.42 but also of the sins of the redeemed host, 00:51:02.46\00:51:04.96 which have been placed upon him. 00:51:04.99\00:51:07.13 And he must also suffer for the ruin of souls 00:51:07.20\00:51:10.13 which he had caused. 00:51:10.17\00:51:11.63 Then I saw... Now here's the good news. 00:51:11.67\00:51:14.34 This is different than what most Christians believe. 00:51:14.37\00:51:16.97 Most Christians believe that God is going to put the Devil in the 00:51:17.01\00:51:19.71 fires of hell and he's never going to go out, 00:51:19.74\00:51:21.41 and the same with the wicked. 00:51:21.44\00:51:22.78 But God is a just God. 00:51:22.81\00:51:24.48 Then I saw that Satan and all the wicked host were consumed, 00:51:24.51\00:51:29.02 and the justice of God was satisfied. 00:51:29.05\00:51:32.49 What is this about? 00:51:32.52\00:51:33.86 Is God wanting to torture the wicked? No. 00:51:33.92\00:51:36.39 This is about meeting out what? the punishment that they deserve 00:51:36.42\00:51:41.26 according to their works. 00:51:41.30\00:51:42.63 It has to do with God's justice. 00:51:42.66\00:51:44.63 And remember, at this time there's no mercy. 00:51:44.67\00:51:46.60 Because the door of mercy is closed. 00:51:46.67\00:51:48.60 This is the unmixed wrath of God, according to what 00:51:48.64\00:51:52.17 the third angel says. 00:51:52.21\00:51:53.54 Then I saw that Satan and all the wicked host were consumed, 00:51:53.61\00:51:56.31 and the justice of God was satisfied. 00:51:56.34\00:51:58.98 And all the angelic host, and all the redeemed saints, 00:51:59.01\00:52:02.38 with a loud voice said, Amen! 00:52:02.42\00:52:05.45 Said the angel, Satan is the root. 00:52:05.49\00:52:08.19 His children are the branches. 00:52:08.22\00:52:09.82 Is that Biblical? Absolutely. 00:52:09.86\00:52:11.86 They are now consumed root and branch. 00:52:11.89\00:52:15.50 They have died a what? an everlasting death. 00:52:15.53\00:52:19.20 Is the fire still burning at this point? 00:52:19.23\00:52:22.74 See, that was a tricky question. 00:52:22.77\00:52:24.77 The fire is still burning because the fire is whom? God. 00:52:24.81\00:52:28.78 But are the wicked still burning? Absolutely not. 00:52:28.81\00:52:32.31 Said the angel, Satan is the root. 00:52:32.35\00:52:34.22 His children are the branches. 00:52:34.28\00:52:35.62 They are now consumed root and branch. 00:52:35.65\00:52:37.95 They have died an everlasting death. 00:52:37.99\00:52:41.22 They are never to have a what? a resurrection. 00:52:41.26\00:52:45.19 And God will have a clean universe. 00:52:45.23\00:52:49.40 Is that a beautiful way of looking at it? Absolutely. 00:52:49.43\00:52:53.97 You say, Well, isn't that mean for God to do this? 00:52:54.00\00:52:56.17 Let me ask you, Did Jesus drink the cup of the wine of God's 00:52:56.20\00:53:01.41 wrath for every single one of these persons? 00:53:01.44\00:53:04.15 He most certainly did. 00:53:04.18\00:53:05.88 But you see, if you don't accept Jesus Christ as your Savior, 00:53:05.91\00:53:09.95 if you accept the antichrist instead of the Christ, 00:53:09.98\00:53:13.12 you must drink the cup of the wrath of God. 00:53:13.15\00:53:16.59 Because you did not receive the gift that Jesus bought 00:53:16.62\00:53:19.86 by drinking the cup of God's wrath. 00:53:19.89\00:53:21.90 Are you understanding the third angel's message? 00:53:21.93\00:53:23.93 It's a matter of life and death folks. 00:53:23.97\00:53:26.90 The third angel's message is a dire warning, 00:53:26.94\00:53:29.17 because God doesn't want anyone to worship the antichrist, 00:53:29.20\00:53:32.14 or his image, or to receive the mark of the antichrist. 00:53:32.17\00:53:35.98 By the way, this destruction is called in the Bible 00:53:36.01\00:53:39.08 God's strange act. 00:53:39.11\00:53:41.12 Because God is a Creator; God is is not a destroyer. 00:53:41.15\00:53:43.89 Notice Isaiah 28:21. 00:53:43.95\00:53:47.12 The King James Version says, His strange work. 00:53:59.13\00:54:02.67 So it's unusual and strange for God to destroy. 00:54:07.71\00:54:11.58 But justice requires that He destroy because these people 00:54:11.61\00:54:15.45 slighted and rejected the mercy of God. 00:54:15.48\00:54:18.79 So the Bible says in Revelation 20:7-10 that fire will 00:54:18.82\00:54:24.63 descend from heaven. 00:54:24.66\00:54:25.99 And the fire will devour the Devil, 00:54:26.03\00:54:27.83 and his angels, and the wicked. 00:54:27.86\00:54:29.40 They will suffer differing lengths of punishment, 00:54:29.43\00:54:32.07 but eventually they will all go out. 00:54:32.10\00:54:34.94 Now let me ask you, Where are they punished? 00:54:34.97\00:54:36.67 Are they punished in some corner in the Universe somewhere? No. 00:54:36.71\00:54:40.34 It says that they gathered around the city on the 00:54:40.38\00:54:43.01 breadth of the earth, and fire fell from heaven. 00:54:43.04\00:54:46.21 So let me ask you, Where do they receive their punishment? 00:54:46.25\00:54:49.02 They receive their punishment on the earth. 00:54:49.05\00:54:51.52 Can the fire be everlasting? in terms of them being 00:54:51.55\00:54:55.89 burned everlasting? 00:54:55.92\00:54:57.29 No, it can't be. Do you know why? 00:54:57.33\00:54:58.83 Because the Bible says that God will make a new 00:54:58.86\00:55:00.76 heaven and a new earth. 00:55:00.83\00:55:02.13 How can He make a new earth if the wicked are being consumed, 00:55:02.16\00:55:05.90 and being burned forever and ever on the earth 00:55:05.93\00:55:08.74 around the holy city? 00:55:08.77\00:55:10.11 I'd like to end by reading a statement that we find in that 00:55:10.14\00:55:13.98 majestic book, The Desire of Ages, 107 and 108. It says: 00:55:14.01\00:55:18.01 To sin wherever found our God is a consuming fire. 00:55:18.05\00:55:23.89 In all who submit to His power, the Spirit of 00:55:23.92\00:55:28.49 God will consume sin. 00:55:28.52\00:55:29.86 See, that's what God wants to do now. 00:55:29.89\00:55:31.46 Through the fire of the Holy Spirit He wants to consume sin. 00:55:31.49\00:55:34.63 But if men cling to sin they become identified with it. 00:55:34.66\00:55:38.83 Is this true of the wicked that they become identified with sin? 00:55:38.87\00:55:41.57 They personify sin just like Satan. 00:55:41.60\00:55:44.84 She says, Then the what? the glory of God, that's the fire, 00:55:44.87\00:55:49.71 the glory of God which destroys sin must destroy them. 00:55:49.74\00:55:53.68 Jacob, after his night of wrestling with the angel 00:55:53.72\00:55:57.62 exclaimed, I have seen God face to face, 00:55:57.65\00:56:00.42 and my life is preserved. 00:56:00.49\00:56:01.82 Why was he able to see God face to face? 00:56:01.86\00:56:04.19 Notice, Jacob had been guilty of a great sin 00:56:04.26\00:56:07.76 in his conduct toward Esau, but he had repented. 00:56:07.83\00:56:11.30 His transgression had been what? forgiven, and his sin purged. 00:56:11.33\00:56:16.47 Therefore he could endure the revelation of God's presence. 00:56:16.50\00:56:21.58 But wherever men came before God while willfully cherishing evil, 00:56:21.61\00:56:27.02 they were destroyed. 00:56:27.05\00:56:28.38 At the second advent of Christ the wicked shall be consumed 00:56:28.42\00:56:31.45 with the spirit of His mouth, and destroyed with the 00:56:31.52\00:56:33.99 brightness of His coming. 00:56:34.06\00:56:35.49 And now notice this: The light of the glory of God... 00:56:35.52\00:56:40.10 This is what the fire is. 00:56:40.13\00:56:41.43 The light of the glory of God, which imparts life to the 00:56:41.46\00:56:45.20 righteous will slay the wicked. 00:56:45.23\00:56:49.00 Did you understand what we studied tonight? 00:56:49.04\00:56:51.17 Isn't it simple? People make things so complicated. 00:56:51.21\00:56:56.41 So there is a certain sense in which the fire is everlasting. 00:56:56.44\00:57:00.85 Because God's glory is the everlasting fire. 00:57:00.88\00:57:04.32 But there's another sense in which the results that the fire 00:57:04.35\00:57:07.72 produces are not everlasting. 00:57:07.79\00:57:10.96 Because the things that are burned up by the everlasting 00:57:10.99\00:57:14.00 fire cease to exist. 00:57:14.03\00:57:15.73 They're reduced to ashes. 00:57:15.80\00:57:17.17 I pray to God that we will follow the Christ, 00:57:17.20\00:57:19.90 and not the antichrist; that we will have Jesus drink the cup 00:57:19.93\00:57:24.11 instead of us having to drink it. 00:57:24.14\00:57:26.01
