Welcome to Thinking about Home. 00:00:30.87\00:00:32.15 I am Kathy Matthews and welcome back again. 00:00:32.16\00:00:35.14 We're going to be continuing aren't we Dick? 00:00:35.15\00:00:38.03 We're going to have some more of a series, 00:00:38.04\00:00:41.05 of a series...of a series entitled the Christian home 00:00:41.06\00:00:43.88 in the last days or something like that. 00:00:43.89\00:00:45.54 Right, yes, maybe I should introduce you again. 00:00:45.55\00:00:47.72 This is Pastor Richard O'Ffill. 00:00:47.73\00:00:48.70 And I'll sort of sit here and look like a strange. 00:00:48.71\00:00:51.04 Yes, as if you are stranger to this program. 00:00:51.05\00:00:53.99 Pastor Richard O'Ffill 00:00:54.00\00:00:55.57 from the Florida Conference Seventh day Adventist 00:00:55.58\00:00:57.66 and we've fun going over a lot of things 00:00:57.67\00:00:59.74 that the Christian family could be learning 00:00:59.75\00:01:02.62 in these last days. 00:01:02.63\00:01:03.60 It's not all fun, sometimes it's really 00:01:03.61\00:01:05.94 serious thinking and we're going 00:01:05.95\00:01:09.43 to be discussing today buy now pay never, 00:01:09.44\00:01:12.86 do you want to explain that? 00:01:12.87\00:01:14.36 Well, that's you know, you got to have a program 00:01:14.37\00:01:16.77 entitled say and so buy now pay never 00:01:16.78\00:01:19.39 that's, you know, that's some person says. 00:01:19.40\00:01:21.10 Buy now pay never, I think I like that idea 00:01:21.11\00:01:24.04 but I won't you know, we don't want to go 00:01:24.05\00:01:27.22 right into it too far but we're gonna talk 00:01:27.23\00:01:29.59 a little bit about, about the Tenth Commandment and, 00:01:29.60\00:01:34.93 you know, sometimes we talk about all the commandments 00:01:34.94\00:01:36.91 and we never get down to the tenth one. 00:01:36.92\00:01:39.93 Oh, Paul did. 00:01:39.94\00:01:40.91 And thou shalt not covet and probably 00:01:40.92\00:01:44.25 a lot of the grief that we're having 00:01:44.26\00:01:47.48 in our homes is because we're not paying attention 00:01:47.49\00:01:51.84 to the commandment but anyway let's don't 00:01:51.85\00:01:53.57 get ahead of ourselves Definitely high on the list 00:01:53.58\00:01:54.79 isn't it for debt. 00:01:54.80\00:01:57.15 It's about debt, this thou shalt not covet. 00:01:57.16\00:01:59.86 When we get into coveting, we get into debt, 00:01:59.87\00:02:01.67 but let's don't ahead of that. Okay, all right. 00:02:01.68\00:02:03.49 Because I'm gonna start of by saying something 00:02:03.50\00:02:05.11 so dramatic, are you ready for it? 00:02:05.12\00:02:07.13 You do that regularly. 00:02:07.14\00:02:09.97 Anyway you know that, you know advertising 00:02:09.98\00:02:13.58 makes Jesus out a liar. How? 00:02:13.59\00:02:16.71 Because Jesus said that a man and or a women 00:02:16.72\00:02:20.66 life doesn't consists in the abundance 00:02:20.67\00:02:24.16 of what they possess. Right. 00:02:24.17\00:02:25.98 What this advertising say. 00:02:25.99\00:02:27.23 Well, says just exactly the opposite. 00:02:27.24\00:02:29.20 Just exactly the opposite, the more you have 00:02:29.21\00:02:31.64 the happy you are. Right. 00:02:31.65\00:02:33.50 Jesus said that's not what life's about. 00:02:33.51\00:02:35.97 So, in a way we've in our homes, 00:02:35.98\00:02:39.83 we've to know that advertising. 00:02:39.84\00:02:42.31 Now advertising can inform us but it can also put us, 00:02:42.32\00:02:46.37 it can create covetousness. 00:02:46.38\00:02:51.36 Yes, okay, all right, that's where you're going with that. 00:02:51.37\00:02:53.95 I was going to say it's a deception 00:02:53.96\00:02:56.33 but I wasn't certain exactly what you were going to say. 00:02:56.34\00:02:58.37 Because it's telling us if you really 00:02:58.38\00:02:59.60 want to be happy you got to have 00:02:59.61\00:03:01.50 all these things, you can't be like you are, 00:03:01.51\00:03:03.87 you got be like everybody else. Yes, right. 00:03:03.88\00:03:05.71 And you see there was a time in which we couldn't do 00:03:05.72\00:03:07.55 anything about that but now with the credit card. 00:03:07.56\00:03:10.34 You don't have to sit still 00:03:10.35\00:03:12.51 and let the neighbor come in with a new book. 00:03:12.52\00:03:14.70 No, yeah to be like the Johannes's so to speak. 00:03:14.71\00:03:18.11 Yeah, turn green with envy, you don't have to turn 00:03:18.12\00:03:19.13 green with envy anymore. 00:03:19.14\00:03:20.32 You go flash your own credit card. 00:03:20.33\00:03:22.66 And you got it too or you can. 00:03:22.67\00:03:25.05 You know this. Which can hurt us? 00:03:25.06\00:03:27.76 It's destroying you know, It's destroying us. 00:03:27.77\00:03:29.54 75% of the divorces they say have to do with finance. 00:03:29.55\00:03:34.98 Well, I don't know where it is on the list 00:03:34.99\00:03:36.78 but it is pretty high. 00:03:36.79\00:03:38.86 Pretty close to number one. 00:03:38.87\00:03:39.89 That's what I've heard. 00:03:39.90\00:03:41.16 You know, going back to what Jesus said 00:03:41.17\00:03:43.37 about a persons life doesn't consists 00:03:43.38\00:03:45.58 in the abundance of that which they possess. 00:03:45.59\00:03:47.96 You mind if I tell you a story? Go ahead. 00:03:47.97\00:03:51.10 Anyway you know, we spend some years overseas 00:03:51.11\00:03:54.41 and you know, as we said in the last program 00:03:56.65\00:04:00.64 you don't know how much culture 00:04:00.65\00:04:02.37 your life style gets into, you're thinking out of it. 00:04:02.38\00:04:04.38 Right, right. 00:04:04.39\00:04:05.36 You don't know how you miss momma's cooking 00:04:05.37\00:04:07.76 until your wife birthday is there anymore. 00:04:07.77\00:04:10.42 And so in my case I like fritos 00:04:10.43\00:04:14.90 and we call corn chips. 00:04:14.91\00:04:16.36 Right. We call them fritos or any body's corn ships. 00:04:16.37\00:04:20.01 And so I can remember. Where were you? 00:04:20.02\00:04:21.99 In fact I brought some here just to keep me comfort. 00:04:22.00\00:04:24.17 They were trying to take it away from you while ago. 00:04:24.18\00:04:26.03 Yeah, anyway I can remember Kathy when, 00:04:26.04\00:04:29.91 I come back on farewell I can have corn ships 00:04:29.92\00:04:33.79 and just almost tears run down my face. 00:04:33.80\00:04:35.56 Oh, come on. 00:04:35.57\00:04:36.86 No, I know, you don't know what it's... 00:04:36.87\00:04:38.02 It is most important to you? 00:04:38.03\00:04:39.01 All right, the taste. 00:04:39.02\00:04:39.99 Well, because I missed it so much. 00:04:40.00\00:04:41.47 See and I can remember as I go around 00:04:41.48\00:04:43.45 I tell people that you know, 00:04:44.22\00:04:45.19 what a wonderful think it was to be home. 00:04:45.20\00:04:46.84 You know, you think be home with mom 00:04:46.85\00:04:48.38 and my in the family, be home with my mom 00:04:48.39\00:04:50.65 the family and fritos. I'll go. 00:04:50.66\00:04:53.24 But anyway, I told people 00:04:53.25\00:04:55.23 this and they started giving me fritos for gifts. 00:04:55.24\00:04:57.77 And then did you feel 00:04:57.78\00:05:00.83 the same way after you got so many? 00:05:00.84\00:05:02.39 Well, and I guess this is the point 00:05:02.40\00:05:04.30 that as long as fritos were scarce in my life, 00:05:04.31\00:05:09.35 they were really special. 00:05:09.36\00:05:11.04 So, do I still like fritos? Yes. 00:05:11.05\00:05:14.84 Do I like them as much as I did 00:05:14.85\00:05:16.67 when I didn't have them? 00:05:16.68\00:05:18.53 No, in other words, the joy of fritos 00:05:18.54\00:05:23.86 was not in having all the fritos you want, 00:05:23.87\00:05:26.75 but in just have a once in a while. Sparingly. 00:05:26.76\00:05:29.79 When you were a child, 00:05:29.80\00:05:33.60 you used to be a child you did? 00:05:33.61\00:05:35.25 Yes, me of course. 00:05:35.26\00:05:36.24 And I think you said before 00:05:36.25\00:05:37.70 they were twelve of you kids? Yes. 00:05:37.71\00:05:39.59 So it must not have been, unless you, you know, 00:05:39.60\00:05:41.46 your parents name was you know, 00:05:41.47\00:05:43.58 Rockefeller or some thing. 00:05:43.59\00:05:45.56 You must have spend some hard time? Oh, yes. 00:05:45.57\00:05:47.91 But you know I remember as a child Kathy, 00:05:47.92\00:05:51.16 I looked forward to summer. Oh, I did too. 00:05:51.17\00:05:53.91 Because of the food that would come. 00:05:54.07\00:05:55.61 Oh, really. 00:05:55.62\00:05:56.88 You remember that? Yes, yes. 00:05:56.89\00:05:58.14 To me, that to me summer was tomatoes, 00:05:58.15\00:06:01.64 yes they were, sliced tomatoes 00:06:01.65\00:06:03.00 the rest of the year tomatoes but... 00:06:03.01\00:06:05.05 And watermelon. 00:06:05.06\00:06:06.03 But can't watermelon was a, 00:06:06.04\00:06:07.32 you just didn't get watermelon. Right. 00:06:07.33\00:06:09.06 You had in the summer we had sliced tomatoes 00:06:09.07\00:06:12.17 the rest of the year can tomatoes. Yes. 00:06:12.18\00:06:14.20 We didn't have watermelon except 00:06:14.21\00:06:15.76 in the summer a corn on the cob. 00:06:15.77\00:06:18.00 Oh, yes. That was the summer deal. 00:06:18.01\00:06:19.61 Absolutely wonderful, you used to go out 00:06:19.62\00:06:21.40 in the garden and pick a worm tomato 00:06:21.41\00:06:24.56 and eat that and when my mother picked 00:06:24.57\00:06:27.24 I know my mother and my family picked tubs 00:06:27.25\00:06:29.73 we call them number two wash tubs. 00:06:29.74\00:06:32.55 Wash tubs full and they would do canning, 00:06:32.56\00:06:34.62 I would sit in the window we didn't have any screens, 00:06:34.63\00:06:37.02 we had a farm house it was kind of a, 00:06:37.03\00:06:38.98 not really a, it was a poor situation. 00:06:38.99\00:06:41.51 And I would sit in the window 00:06:41.52\00:06:42.66 on the seal eating tomatoes till 00:06:42.67\00:06:44.35 I couldn't eat tomatoes anymore. 00:06:44.36\00:06:45.88 Because it was a summer event. 00:06:45.89\00:06:47.54 In other words I guess what we're saying 00:06:47.55\00:06:49.34 is that because nowadays it's not that way, 00:06:49.35\00:06:51.44 you can have a sliced tomatoes. 00:06:51.45\00:06:52.94 Anywhere. You can have it in July. 00:06:52.95\00:06:54.16 Anytime all most. You can have it in December. 00:06:54.17\00:06:55.90 At least in the United States. 00:06:55.91\00:06:56.88 Yeah, because we're importing that stuff 00:06:56.89\00:06:58.86 and so I can say that not that I don't like tomatoes, 00:06:58.87\00:07:03.90 but tomatoes aren't as good as they used 00:07:03.91\00:07:06.26 to be because you know, speaking 00:07:06.27\00:07:08.85 of a watermelon Yes. 00:07:08.86\00:07:12.59 I heard a story that they are having 00:07:12.60\00:07:13.66 a big watermelon feed and the kids 00:07:13.67\00:07:15.84 were all sitting around there, 00:07:15.85\00:07:16.84 you know, the seven kids down. 00:07:16.85\00:07:18.07 And what's coming. 00:07:18.08\00:07:19.05 And they are eating and so that you know, 00:07:19.06\00:07:21.98 the scout director or the camp director stood 00:07:21.99\00:07:23.73 and he said now boys and girls 00:07:23.74\00:07:25.54 when you get all finished throw your reins over 00:07:25.55\00:07:27.36 here in the garbage can and when those little kids 00:07:27.37\00:07:29.18 said they aren't going to be nowhere. 00:07:29.19\00:07:32.32 It was desperate, I liked it very much isn't it. 00:07:32.33\00:07:35.09 And that was the joy, you know, do you think back 00:07:35.10\00:07:38.39 in those days there was real poverty, 00:07:38.40\00:07:40.96 but I think we compare with today's standards 00:07:40.97\00:07:42.96 we were all poor and didn't know it. 00:07:42.97\00:07:45.35 And I think there was a quality life 00:07:45.36\00:07:49.00 back in those days, 00:07:49.01\00:07:50.25 it wasn't a quantity of life. 00:07:50.26\00:07:51.68 Because we didn't have everything 00:07:51.69\00:07:53.50 at our finger tips. 00:07:53.51\00:07:54.92 You know, I had a first cousin Kathy, 00:07:54.93\00:07:58.04 his dad was a car dealer and to us that was rich. 00:07:58.05\00:08:02.02 I don't know how much money 00:08:02.03\00:08:03.23 they had but he was an only child. 00:08:03.24\00:08:06.03 He would send me his hand me downs. 00:08:06.04\00:08:08.17 You being the twelfth did you ever had hand me downs? 00:08:08.18\00:08:10.43 Oh, what, that's all I had, what do you mean. 00:08:10.44\00:08:13.40 Anyway he will send me this box of hand me downs. 00:08:13.41\00:08:15.88 I felt like it was Christmas. 00:08:15.89\00:08:17.36 Oh, yes. I loved it. 00:08:17.37\00:08:19.35 Oh, yes. I remember one time. 00:08:19.36\00:08:20.63 It was new to you. 00:08:20.64\00:08:21.61 Well, it was new to me. Yes. 00:08:21.62\00:08:22.62 And I remember one time that. 00:08:22.63\00:08:23.72 Is that you got started, 00:08:23.73\00:08:25.44 I was going to say, shall I say that. 00:08:25.45\00:08:27.05 No, no let's not, because 00:08:27.06\00:08:28.15 we want to save this later on you see. Okay. 00:08:28.16\00:08:31.52 Anyway youand I get going and we just wanna 00:08:31.53\00:08:33.38 tell all at once this, but anyway 00:08:33.39\00:08:35.55 I got 30 pairs of socks, about 30 pairs of socks. 00:08:35.56\00:08:37.88 Oh! What did you do with 30 pairs of socks, 00:08:37.89\00:08:39.75 I thought your feet grew 00:08:39.76\00:08:40.74 before you can wear those out. 00:08:40.75\00:08:42.40 I felt like a king, because we were poorish 00:08:42.41\00:08:45.59 and they were four of us kids. 00:08:45.60\00:08:46.57 But I never thought poor, summer was fun because 00:08:46.58\00:08:49.21 it was sliced tomatoes, and corn on the cob. 00:08:49.22\00:08:51.00 And time to take my shoes off. 00:08:51.01\00:08:52.54 But, is it as muchas fun as it used to be. 00:08:52.55\00:08:58.35 We have more than we've ever had. 00:08:58.36\00:08:59.67 Right, I can have. 00:08:59.68\00:09:01.62 Well, we didn't go to town unless it was occasional 00:09:01.63\00:09:06.13 or just maybe when I needed to buy shoes, 00:09:06.14\00:09:08.48 I had to ask my older sisters 00:09:08.49\00:09:10.18 if this was true when I was really young 00:09:10.19\00:09:14.93 my dad had to go into town, I thought town 00:09:14.94\00:09:16.86 was so far away and it was only ten miles 00:09:16.87\00:09:19.84 and I wondered why we can never go 00:09:19.85\00:09:22.05 and then occasionally we would go and I find out 00:09:22.06\00:09:24.89 it was twice a year and it was only 00:09:24.90\00:09:26.92 so that I could buy shoes. 00:09:26.93\00:09:28.13 This was up until I was probably 00:09:28.14\00:09:30.66 in the first grade. Oh, sure right. 00:09:30.67\00:09:31.99 Something like that and it was a treat 00:09:32.00\00:09:35.40 to be able to do that, children go now everywhere 00:09:35.41\00:09:39.52 parents go and nothing is special. Another thing... 00:09:39.53\00:09:42.14 And they are little special, let's put it that way. 00:09:42.15\00:09:44.56 Do you remember when we had school shoes 00:09:44.57\00:09:47.02 and church shoes that was it. Yes. 00:09:47.03\00:09:48.80 And now look in our clothes. 00:09:48.81\00:09:49.78 Now I had farm shoes and school shoes, 00:09:49.79\00:09:52.19 I did even have church shoes. 00:09:52.20\00:09:53.17 Okay, you did that's right because you did you had come 00:09:53.18\00:09:55.33 to that place in your life yet. Right. 00:09:55.34\00:09:57.41 But then now I, as I began to, you know, 00:09:57.42\00:10:00.02 to plug into my, into my memory. 00:10:00.03\00:10:03.27 You remember what layaway, you remember that expression 00:10:03.28\00:10:05.19 when we used to buy things on layaway 00:10:05.20\00:10:06.47 All right, yes yeah. 00:10:06.48\00:10:07.96 And so you will give about a dollar down 00:10:07.97\00:10:10.01 and then you kind of pay it off just a little bit. 00:10:10.02\00:10:12.52 I think the first time I remember... 00:10:12.53\00:10:14.13 Is that delayed satisfaction? 00:10:14.14\00:10:15.46 And you didn't get it either. 00:10:15.47\00:10:17.50 It had to stay there till it was paid for. 00:10:17.51\00:10:20.16 And I think that as a child I can remember 00:10:20.17\00:10:24.28 the department stores, you know, 00:10:24.29\00:10:26.51 the town will have its local department store, 00:10:26.52\00:10:28.36 I think it had a credit but this credit card 00:10:28.37\00:10:31.53 thing you know, I don't remember 00:10:31.54\00:10:33.27 in what year it popped out but then pretty soon credit, 00:10:33.28\00:10:37.01 you know, these plastic cards 00:10:37.02\00:10:38.30 were everywhere and layaway was I know, 00:10:38.31\00:10:42.17 I suppose they may have it some places. 00:10:42.18\00:10:43.87 They do, they still has. 00:10:43.88\00:10:44.97 But, it's out the window basically 00:10:44.98\00:10:46.69 because you just flip that card down 00:10:46.70\00:10:48.84 and you take it away and know that you know. 00:10:48.85\00:10:53.00 Makes it easy. It makes it easy. 00:10:53.01\00:10:54.49 Makes it easy. 00:10:54.50\00:10:55.79 I was in the Sabbath school class one time 00:10:55.80\00:10:57.82 and they were talking about the curse of slavery 00:10:57.83\00:11:00.86 and you know, when you think of awfulness 00:11:00.87\00:11:02.44 this slavery is around the planet. 00:11:02.45\00:11:05.08 And you thought you were talking about 00:11:05.09\00:11:06.70 something from the past right. 00:11:06.71\00:11:08.44 It must see and sold and so and that's 00:11:08.45\00:11:10.27 what the teacher said aren't we glad 00:11:10.28\00:11:13.31 we don't have slavery anymore. 00:11:13.32\00:11:14.66 And you said. 00:11:14.67\00:11:15.64 I raised my hand, I said, 00:11:15.65\00:11:17.91 right now you go ahead and read the text. 00:11:17.92\00:11:19.23 Oh! Do you want me to read it out of here, okay? 00:11:19.24\00:11:20.57 Now who is in one little scene. 00:11:20.58\00:11:21.73 I think its proverbs that we talked about. 00:11:21.74\00:11:23.31 Proverbs 22 verse 7. Okay. 00:11:23.32\00:11:25.68 And because I raised my hand and the text 00:11:25.69\00:11:27.94 I would be referring 00:11:27.95\00:11:28.92 to in verse 7 what is this say? 00:11:28.93\00:11:30.46 It says, the rich ruleth over the poor 00:11:30.47\00:11:34.37 And the borrower is servant to the lender. 00:11:34.38\00:11:37.74 See and so you know, what I said to the teacher, 00:11:37.75\00:11:39.33 I said you want to know what the slavery is like? 00:11:39.34\00:11:41.72 It's like debt, that's why it's like. 00:11:41.73\00:11:43.62 And what did he say? 00:11:43.63\00:11:44.76 Well, I don't know whether they thought about 00:11:44.77\00:11:46.42 it before because you know, some things when you say 00:11:46.43\00:11:48.11 things like that they'll say woo... you know, 00:11:48.12\00:11:49.79 we don't want to talk about 00:11:49.80\00:11:50.77 that just don't talk about real things. 00:11:50.78\00:11:52.16 Or revelation hits. 00:11:52.17\00:11:53.82 Well and then see, because you know, 00:11:53.83\00:11:55.53 really slavery is a 100% dead. 00:11:55.54\00:11:57.97 Now a slave owes a 100% to whoever 00:11:57.98\00:12:01.02 and so I heard someone say to the extend 00:12:01.03\00:12:04.08 that were in debt you know, to that extend. 00:12:04.09\00:12:07.03 We are also in slavery. 00:12:07.04\00:12:08.01 We are to oblige to somebody. 00:12:08.02\00:12:11.29 In other words my paycheck that I get is only mine 00:12:11.30\00:12:15.46 to the extend that I don't have already 00:12:15.47\00:12:17.44 obligated that paycheck to somebody else. 00:12:17.45\00:12:20.57 And you know, you know they... 00:12:20.58\00:12:23.04 I think the reason that we've done this 00:12:23.05\00:12:25.27 we call this program buy now pay never. 00:12:25.28\00:12:27.68 And I don't have the statistic 00:12:27.69\00:12:29.04 for it but they say that if you pay 00:12:29.05\00:12:31.52 the minimum on the credit card. 00:12:31.53\00:12:33.59 Right, we might never pay it off. 00:12:33.60\00:12:35.67 Okay I was gonna say it's years, 00:12:35.68\00:12:37.73 it's like you know, as much as paying 00:12:37.74\00:12:39.59 off the house, just pay the minimum 00:12:39.60\00:12:41.73 and you never pay out. 00:12:41.74\00:12:43.42 Right, and that's good for the company isn't it? 00:12:43.43\00:12:47.92 We're not good for the family. 00:12:47.93\00:12:49.34 when I knew we're gonna do this program I, 00:12:49.35\00:12:52.50 sometimes when I go out to get the mail 00:12:53.70\00:12:55.70 the garbage cans out there, so I'm able to... 00:12:55.71\00:12:58.23 You mean, you just have a handy 00:12:58.24\00:12:59.29 by the mailbox that's what. 00:12:59.30\00:13:00.27 Well, no, if the mail comes, the garbage comes 00:13:00.28\00:13:02.89 twice a week see, so I'll go and get the mail 00:13:02.90\00:13:05.27 to take the garbage 00:13:05.28\00:13:06.25 can in and so you can do the fish sorting. 00:13:06.26\00:13:07.72 I thought may be you had the... 00:13:07.73\00:13:09.33 you were expecting the junk mail 00:13:09.34\00:13:10.80 and you just had a dumb near the mailbox. 00:13:10.81\00:13:12.59 Well, that's the way it works, 00:13:12.60\00:13:14.78 and so you know, before this program 00:13:14.79\00:13:18.43 I thought well I wonder if I'll get in the air, 00:13:18.44\00:13:20.56 advertisements for credit cards. 00:13:20.57\00:13:22.54 And you did. I did all the time. 00:13:22.55\00:13:26.54 And where you in debt. 00:13:26.55\00:13:27.64 I don't, I read that in a recent year 00:13:27.65\00:13:30.75 the credit card companies send out two billion, 00:13:30.76\00:13:36.88 solicitations for offer credit cards. 00:13:36.89\00:13:40.34 And they are coming all the time 00:13:40.35\00:13:43.68 and some people just have stacks of this thing. 00:13:43.69\00:13:47.42 Yes, I get them too. 00:13:47.43\00:13:48.41 I saw, what they do, you know, 00:13:48.42\00:13:51.76 they'll go ahead and fill it out, 00:13:51.77\00:13:52.78 until they get. 00:13:52.79\00:13:53.76 Just to make it really convenient. 00:13:53.77\00:13:55.10 Well so you know, you can just, 00:13:55.11\00:13:56.48 it's kind of like... What? 00:13:56.49\00:13:59.52 You know, and you just have so much 00:13:59.53\00:14:00.65 that in the air see and then, 00:14:00.66\00:14:02.63 and then some people will say well, you know, 00:14:02.64\00:14:04.68 I will just keep trading credit card 00:14:04.69\00:14:05.93 so I'll put money on this card 00:14:05.94\00:14:07.98 and then I'll switch it to this card 00:14:07.99\00:14:09.53 and they're really you know, it's like juggling. 00:14:09.54\00:14:13.01 Juggling it all. You know, some one says you got 00:14:13.02\00:14:15.12 to keep these balls in the air but some of these 00:14:15.75\00:14:16.72 are glass balls when they fall.. It's gone. 00:14:16.73\00:14:18.94 That they break, and so there's homes 00:14:18.95\00:14:20.48 been broken because there, they're juggling debt. Yeah. 00:14:20.49\00:14:24.90 I got this National News Magazine 00:14:24.91\00:14:28.17 a few weeks ago and it says here, 00:14:28.18\00:14:31.04 it says are you maxed out American consumers 00:14:31.05\00:14:34.87 are drowning in debt, and it's got this couple here 00:14:34.88\00:14:39.34 you know, with up to their necks. 00:14:39.35\00:14:40.51 Right, you might turn that around, 00:14:40.52\00:14:41.86 to may be show to your camera. 00:14:41.87\00:14:43.03 Yeah, camera is good, isn't that awful 00:14:43.04\00:14:44.10 Yes or turn it down I'm not sure 00:14:44.11\00:14:45.82 which is the best but I saw that. 00:14:45.83\00:14:47.62 Did you see that? I did see that, yes. 00:14:47.63\00:14:49.32 And so this is a huge problem 00:14:49.33\00:14:51.66 we have in this country. Yes. 00:14:51.67\00:14:53.49 And I might say that when you travel ... 00:14:53.50\00:14:57.22 I don't want to say around the world in every place. 00:14:57.23\00:14:59.42 A credit card is a money everywhere 00:14:59.43\00:15:00.85 and so this, these credit cards 00:15:00.86\00:15:02.63 just go everyplace. Just killing us. 00:15:02.64\00:15:04.77 And it's impacting in our homes 00:15:04.78\00:15:10.91 and so you know, 0what I perceive is, 00:15:10.92\00:15:13.87 is it advertising comes in and makes us 00:15:13.88\00:15:16.14 dissatisfied with this status score. 00:15:16.15\00:15:19.02 Discontent in our heart. 00:15:19.03\00:15:20.12 Yeah, when you seen your card 00:15:20.13\00:15:21.27 they say amen I got to get rid of this card, 00:15:21.28\00:15:23.09 my house is so crummy, I need to knew this, 00:15:23.10\00:15:25.47 or I need to knew that and so discontent comes 00:15:25.48\00:15:29.25 and then and with discontent we begin to look 00:15:29.26\00:15:31.79 at others, we compare our self. 00:15:31.80\00:15:33.50 Right, have we thought 00:15:33.51\00:15:34.73 that this might be the devil's plan? 00:15:34.74\00:15:37.08 Well, this is I think it's part of the dynamic 00:15:37.09\00:15:39.27 of the last days debt to the extent 00:15:39.28\00:15:42.06 they were into debt has to be the part 00:15:42.07\00:15:44.99 of the dynamic of the last days. 00:15:45.00\00:15:46.95 Because if it's, what it's doing 00:15:46.96\00:15:48.82 it's taking away our freedom. 00:15:48.83\00:15:53.58 because we're becoming bonded 00:15:53.59\00:15:55.18 and bondage to whom we served. 00:15:55.19\00:15:59.18 To whom we served. Yes. 00:15:59.19\00:16:00.38 And so here everything we have belongs 00:16:00.39\00:16:02.91 to someone else and yet there are, 00:16:02.92\00:16:05.08 it's not unusual that people are have it 00:16:05.09\00:16:09.52 but appears to be a huge standard of living. 00:16:09.53\00:16:12.12 Yes. And they can't enjoy it. 00:16:12.13\00:16:14.44 Right, because all of this will haze 00:16:14.45\00:16:16.17 on your mind and I've often wondered 00:16:16.18\00:16:19.19 how does that person get that. 00:16:19.20\00:16:20.84 What kind of job do they have to have 00:16:20.85\00:16:23.01 to get that and then it keeps 00:16:23.02\00:16:24.20 coming back to me, probably not the job 00:16:24.21\00:16:27.16 it's probably the credit card. 00:16:27.17\00:16:28.59 Oh, definitely. 00:16:28.60\00:16:29.89 I've talked through the years 00:16:29.90\00:16:33.32 with realtors you know, for one reason 00:16:33.33\00:16:35.27 or another just in passing. 00:16:35.28\00:16:37.29 And more than once excuse me, 00:16:37.30\00:16:39.95 they have said that there will be some 00:16:39.96\00:16:43.56 beautiful house, and then you know, 00:16:43.57\00:16:45.70 pass it on the street no furniture inside. Right. 00:16:45.71\00:16:48.98 Or the air-condition is not on, 00:16:48.99\00:16:50.46 they are in such debt. 00:16:50.47\00:16:52.71 That they can't. 00:16:52.72\00:16:53.69 That they can't furnish the place. 00:16:53.70\00:16:54.88 Yes, right, yeah. 00:16:54.89\00:16:56.08 It's a scary thing. 00:16:58.07\00:16:59.04 Do you know, there is a dynamic 00:16:59.05\00:17:02.69 that we maybe we ought to mention here, 00:17:02.70\00:17:04.17 have you heard of this we usually 00:17:04.18\00:17:06.79 use this expression when we talk about children, 00:17:06.80\00:17:08.65 peer independency. 00:17:08.66\00:17:09.87 Wait a minute I am saying 00:17:13.25\00:17:14.22 that peer pressure using there. 00:17:14.23\00:17:15.50 Oh, well that's about, okay with this... 00:17:15.51\00:17:16.94 Peer pressure but I guess 00:17:16.95\00:17:18.24 I put the card before the horse. 00:17:18.25\00:17:20.31 Peer pressure is natural as barometric, 00:17:20.32\00:17:24.00 what is the word.. Barometric. 00:17:24.01\00:17:25.23 Barometric pressure, it's barometric, 00:17:25.24\00:17:26.88 it's all around you anyway Yes. 00:17:26.89\00:17:28.85 But many of us have developed 00:17:28.86\00:17:30.64 what we might called peer dependence. 00:17:30.65\00:17:32.54 Okay, all right. 00:17:32.55\00:17:33.97 In other words it's all right 00:17:33.98\00:17:35.42 that we're surrounded by our culture 00:17:35.43\00:17:36.82 but when I began to think that the clothes I wear, 00:17:36.83\00:17:41.17 the car I drive, the house I live in 00:17:41.18\00:17:43.88 that if it is it meeting the expectations 00:17:43.89\00:17:46.69 of the society. Right. 00:17:46.70\00:17:49.01 Then I've become peer dependant 00:17:49.02\00:17:52.84 and so pretty soon I've lost control of my life 00:17:52.85\00:17:55.84 and I've to go into debt to meet with you know, 00:17:55.85\00:17:58.16 what to say your expectations 00:17:58.17\00:18:00.17 and so I'm watching all of these commercials 00:18:00.18\00:18:02.38 and I'm watching all these people around. 00:18:02.39\00:18:03.92 Being fed all of this. 00:18:03.93\00:18:05.30 That's it, if I'm not like that. 00:18:05.31\00:18:07.96 Then I'm not expectable. 00:18:07.97\00:18:09.26 Then I'm not... Then I'm not expected. 00:18:09.27\00:18:10.78 I'm not, I'm some kind of failure. 00:18:10.79\00:18:12.37 And so when we get a home this going on there 00:18:12.38\00:18:15.53 and then the children get into that see now, 00:18:15.54\00:18:17.91 I don't know what you would say 00:18:17.92\00:18:19.21 because you know, you have some wonderful 00:18:19.22\00:18:21.34 things to say about parenting, 00:18:21.35\00:18:22.42 but how do you resist this sort of cry 00:18:22.43\00:18:26.59 of the children oh, we got to have this, 00:18:26.60\00:18:29.11 do you have any feeling about that? 00:18:29.12\00:18:30.16 Well, yes I've, we have to help children 00:18:30.17\00:18:32.89 or help our children understand 00:18:32.90\00:18:34.07 just what it cost to live and you know, 00:18:34.08\00:18:36.51 one other things that I picked up this before 00:18:36.52\00:18:39.81 as we were talking about doing this program 00:18:39.82\00:18:41.58 was I was in a hospital and this had to be there 00:18:41.59\00:18:45.95 and it's a magazine called Stages. 00:18:45.96\00:18:48.52 I've never seen it before but it happened to be there 00:18:48.53\00:18:51.29 and there was an article 00:18:51.30\00:18:53.02 in it called want read it Fiscal... 00:18:53.03\00:18:57.43 Fiscal, you see when I look at it. 00:18:57.44\00:19:00.11 You read it wrong first time. 00:19:00.12\00:19:01.21 I wanted to say Physical. No. 00:19:01.22\00:19:02.68 it's fiscal fitnes for teens 00:19:02.69\00:19:05.20 it's almost a tongue twister. 00:19:05.21\00:19:06.18 Yes, it is and so I've started reading 00:19:06.19\00:19:08.30 and I thought this would do well on this program 00:19:08.31\00:19:10.72 and some of the things that the secular world 00:19:10.73\00:19:14.35 is suggesting to implement with our children 00:19:14.36\00:19:17.11 is something that Christians definitely 00:19:17.12\00:19:19.28 need to be implementing because I think it's biblical 00:19:19.29\00:19:21.42 to do so and that is to teach them 00:19:21.43\00:19:23.37 to manage money. 00:19:23.38\00:19:25.70 And so, what are some of those suggestions. 00:19:25.71\00:19:26.85 Well, some of the suggestions 00:19:26.86\00:19:28.06 I can't exactly agree with but I won't go into those. 00:19:28.07\00:19:31.06 No, right. And then, there are some 00:19:31.07\00:19:34.37 that I think are excellent, encourage income tracking 00:19:34.38\00:19:37.99 and planned spending. 00:19:38.00\00:19:40.87 Okay, when teens track exactly 00:19:40.88\00:19:43.38 how much they spend they become more conscious 00:19:43.39\00:19:46.23 of how much things cost. 00:19:46.24\00:19:47.95 Well, that seems to be a no brainer almost. 00:19:47.96\00:19:50.83 We do need to help children to know 00:19:52.74\00:19:56.49 just the value of money and labor 00:19:56.50\00:19:59.69 is a good way to do that. 00:19:59.70\00:20:01.02 Another one is share family finances. 00:20:01.03\00:20:03.92 In other words let your children know 00:20:03.93\00:20:06.03 how much you are making and how, 00:20:06.04\00:20:07.86 where it goes so here is the suggestion. 00:20:07.87\00:20:10.58 Make bill paying a family affair, 00:20:10.59\00:20:13.19 by occasionally letting your kids write out 00:20:13.20\00:20:15.25 the checks for the mortgage, 00:20:15.26\00:20:16.23 And I would add to that anything 00:20:17.75\00:20:19.57 that they have done extra they get pay for. Yes, okay. 00:20:19.58\00:20:22.79 You know, and if they can't do 00:20:22.80\00:20:24.89 that then maybe they need to realize 00:20:24.90\00:20:28.36 how much mother Natty has to put 00:20:28.37\00:20:29.53 into it to give that to them. 00:20:29.54\00:20:31.75 here, show you kids your pay stubs 00:20:31.76\00:20:35.02 point out gross pay and net pay 00:20:35.03\00:20:36.47 and I am now add to that help them to realize 00:20:36.48\00:20:39.05 what it takes for tithes and offerings 00:20:39.06\00:20:40.77 when it comes out of that. 00:20:40.78\00:20:43.14 Introduce saving and investing concepts, 00:20:43.15\00:20:45.78 those kinds of things. 00:20:45.79\00:20:48.59 Here's one, that I thought was an interesting comment 00:20:48.60\00:20:51.61 and even if you are teen funds 00:20:51.62\00:20:53.79 the account that the, even if you are teen funds 00:20:53.80\00:20:56.28 the account with money this is if they have a, 00:20:56.29\00:20:58.52 a checking account perhaps with money 00:20:58.53\00:21:01.72 from a regular or summer job, 00:21:01.73\00:21:03.38 oh! get this you can still set rules 00:21:03.39\00:21:06.44 about how it spent and this to me 00:21:06.45\00:21:09.72 would help families come out of this 00:21:09.73\00:21:11.34 if youth were taught this, so that when they have 00:21:11.35\00:21:14.19 their own homes they wouldn't have 00:21:14.20\00:21:15.58 to get into this conflict. 00:21:15.59\00:21:16.56 Yes, that's true, that's true. You know. 00:21:16.57\00:21:18.14 Well you know, sometimes I think 00:21:18.15\00:21:19.68 our children they take it for granted 00:21:19.69\00:21:21.96 that the money they might earn 00:21:21.97\00:21:25.63 it's for play, isn't this true? 00:21:25.64\00:21:28.91 Well. In other words I'm gonna pay. 00:21:28.92\00:21:30.18 I don't think so. 00:21:30.19\00:21:31.16 I'm gonna pay your clothes, your boarding room. 00:21:31.17\00:21:34.34 That's not the way I grew up. 00:21:34.35\00:21:35.32 And whatever money you may. 00:21:35.33\00:21:36.30 Well I remember, now of course you know, 00:21:36.31\00:21:37.73 And I know that. 00:21:37.74\00:21:38.71 if it's you and I start saying. 00:21:38.72\00:21:39.69 When I was a child. 00:21:39.70\00:21:41.73 I knew, you're going to say that. 00:21:41.74\00:21:43.11 But it's true, you know, 00:21:43.12\00:21:44.49 there must have been principles because... 00:21:44.50\00:21:46.66 That we should continue with? 00:21:46.67\00:21:47.98 Well, I think so. 00:21:47.99\00:21:50.14 now, may be my dad went too far, 00:21:50.15\00:21:52.38 but I can remember working in the summer 00:21:52.39\00:21:54.54 and Kathy believe it or not when I would get 00:21:54.55\00:21:56.78 my paycheck at the end of the week 00:21:56.79\00:21:58.24 I worked on a plastering crew. Yes. 00:21:58.25\00:21:59.85 I handed it to my father and because I was going 00:21:59.86\00:22:03.02 to the academy and to college 00:22:03.03\00:22:05.70 but you know, there are, I suppose you know, 00:22:05.71\00:22:08.17 maybe people who have more money you know, 00:22:08.18\00:22:10.55 they have more latitude but I think 00:22:10.56\00:22:13.02 for the average person, I think I hear this saying 00:22:13.03\00:22:16.97 that the child must see himself 00:22:16.98\00:22:18.72 as a partner in the family finance. 00:22:18.73\00:22:22.80 I agree with you. 00:22:22.81\00:22:24.17 Tom had to lift railroad tires. 00:22:24.18\00:22:28.19 Do you know, what it takes to lift railroad tires 00:22:28.20\00:22:30.49 and that was a job that he would do 00:22:30.50\00:22:32.74 after school and he lifted railroad tires 00:22:32.75\00:22:34.69 then it wasn't just for fun and I, 00:22:34.70\00:22:36.70 the money was used for his activities, 00:22:36.71\00:22:38.97 his recreation as well. 00:22:38.98\00:22:40.45 But it also paid the gas, paid the car payment 00:22:40.46\00:22:43.79 and different things, mom and dad just didn't do 00:22:43.80\00:22:45.70 that for him and my family was just not 00:22:45.71\00:22:47.66 in a position where non of us had cars, 00:22:47.67\00:22:50.35 no not one had a vehicle. 00:22:50.36\00:22:53.95 And that's part of the culture that demands 00:22:53.96\00:22:58.35 or the discontent everybody who turns to certain age, 00:22:58.36\00:23:01.38 they think they have to have a vehicle 00:23:01.39\00:23:02.92 and that puts the family in a horrible debt. 00:23:02.93\00:23:05.65 Do you know... 00:23:05.66\00:23:06.63 To have extras like that, now may be not everybody 00:23:06.64\00:23:09.05 can agree with me on that kind of thing 00:23:09.06\00:23:11.42 you know, that's up to you, if you don't feel like 00:23:11.43\00:23:13.21 you can agree with me but if you're in debt 00:23:13.22\00:23:16.25 you might consider, what things you can remove. 00:23:16.26\00:23:19.67 Well, I think we're saying that, 00:23:19.68\00:23:22.57 see we love our children, our grand children. Yes. 00:23:22.58\00:23:24.96 One of my grand sons came to me 00:23:26.24\00:23:28.05 the other day he need a $5. 00:23:28.06\00:23:30.34 He said grandpa I need $5 I'll work for you 00:23:30.35\00:23:33.26 and so you know, what I've just said 00:23:33.27\00:23:36.13 I've been in favor of that so I said 00:23:36.14\00:23:38.43 well I need the weeds pulled in this flower garden 00:23:38.44\00:23:41.76 and I know I made a mistake you know, 00:23:41.77\00:23:43.01 what I did I gave him the $5 00:23:43.02\00:23:44.69 before he pulled the weeds. Oh. 00:23:44.70\00:23:46.66 Guess, what the weeds never got pulled. Oh, really. 00:23:46.67\00:23:50.28 I mean I couldn't you know, what can you say 00:23:50.29\00:23:52.67 but later he came and said grandpa 00:23:52.68\00:23:54.56 I want to wash the car. 00:23:54.57\00:23:55.81 You know, what I said then after you pull the weeds. 00:23:55.82\00:24:00.16 What was that? 00:24:00.17\00:24:01.20 I have to because and he laughed 00:24:01.21\00:24:02.48 because he knew and I, we owe it if we owe it, 00:24:02.49\00:24:09.41 we love our children and I think that we owe it 00:24:09.42\00:24:13.34 to them to teach them financial responsibilities. 00:24:13.35\00:24:16.88 And but you know, the credit card companies 00:24:16.89\00:24:18.58 and I know they are honest people 00:24:18.59\00:24:19.87 make their living you know, selling credit. 00:24:19.88\00:24:22.67 But you know, they are giving credit cards 00:24:22.68\00:24:25.30 to very young, and I know 00:24:25.31\00:24:28.62 they're giving it to college students. 00:24:28.63\00:24:29.95 I know but listen to me here it says here's the another 00:24:29.96\00:24:31.92 thing be cautious about credit cards. 00:24:31.93\00:24:35.27 This person who is writing opposed 00:24:35.28\00:24:37.45 the students having, he was opposed 00:24:37.46\00:24:40.08 to students having credit card 00:24:40.09\00:24:41.24 even when they go to college. 00:24:41.25\00:24:44.02 Now, if this can be suggested here 00:24:44.03\00:24:46.77 what should the Christian family do 00:24:46.78\00:24:48.75 to avoid the heart break that comes from that? 00:24:48.76\00:24:52.00 What do you think? 00:24:52.01\00:24:53.01 You know, going back to the first part 00:24:53.02\00:24:54.75 of this program thou shalt not covet. 00:24:54.76\00:24:58.68 We need to learn to live within our means. Yeah. 00:24:58.69\00:25:03.40 The whole business of credit is exacerbating 00:25:03.41\00:25:07.66 our discontent, it's putting us into debt 00:25:07.67\00:25:11.16 which removes our freedom. 00:25:11.17\00:25:12.31 You know, here in this magazine 00:25:12.32\00:25:16.56 there are some more tips now, 00:25:16.57\00:25:17.75 this is not address to children 00:25:17.76\00:25:19.36 but I'll share couple of these. Right. 00:25:19.37\00:25:23.54 The first max when it comes to debt 00:25:23.55\00:25:25.27 is you don't save money by borrowing more. 00:25:25.28\00:25:27.71 And the person start out by saying 00:25:27.72\00:25:29.63 face the real problem credit cards don't sneak out 00:25:29.64\00:25:32.49 at night and go shopping by themselves. 00:25:32.50\00:25:35.09 Okay. That's a good point. 00:25:35.10\00:25:36.28 In my hand right. 00:25:36.29\00:25:37.30 Another one I thought is very good, 00:25:37.31\00:25:39.21 lower you spending and then he says 00:25:39.22\00:25:42.35 here the subversive thought aim to live 00:25:42.36\00:25:44.49 on less than you earn. 00:25:44.50\00:25:46.08 You know, Betty and I've done that. 00:25:46.09\00:25:47.24 I could have had virtually Kathy 00:25:47.25\00:25:49.53 higher standard of living. 00:25:49.54\00:25:50.97 But I kind of set my standard of living 00:25:50.98\00:25:52.82 all though Betty works too, so that if one of us 00:25:52.83\00:25:55.77 went out of work we don't sink. And then. 00:25:55.78\00:25:59.72 And so that means that we don't have 00:25:59.73\00:26:01.23 as many things as we might have had 00:26:01.24\00:26:03.01 but we're not worried, we don't have 00:26:03.02\00:26:05.38 the financial worries if we had been in debt. 00:26:05.39\00:26:08.01 And here is the another suggestion 00:26:08.02\00:26:09.24 add to the retirement savings 00:26:09.25\00:26:10.98 people forget that they gonna retire 00:26:10.99\00:26:12.27 one day and social security is not enough 00:26:12.28\00:26:15.41 to live on after retirement. 00:26:15.42\00:26:17.11 And here's the good one 00:26:17.12\00:26:18.20 pay off high interest credit cards. Yes. 00:26:18.21\00:26:22.73 If we don't get our way out of these. 00:26:22.74\00:26:23.87 Get them out of the way. 00:26:23.88\00:26:24.85 It's going to be forever. 00:26:24.86\00:26:25.83 Anyway I'm sure there's lot of suggestions 00:26:25.84\00:26:27.63 but I think the challenge that we want to leave it 00:26:27.64\00:26:29.68 in the program is that as Christian families 00:26:29.69\00:26:33.98 if we're not sensitive to this matter of debt, 00:26:33.99\00:26:37.10 it's gonna scramble our some of our discernment, 00:26:37.11\00:26:40.09 it's gonna put a weight on our back 00:26:40.10\00:26:41.87 so because we're gonna 00:26:41.88\00:26:42.87 need to be lean and mean in the last days. 00:26:42.88\00:26:46.35 And you can't be lean and mean 00:26:46.36\00:26:47.87 you know, that's an expression.
