Welcome to Thinking About Home. 00:00:32.17\00:00:33.47 I am Kathy Matthews and we have something 00:00:33.55\00:00:35.60 really special for you today that excites me. 00:00:36.05\00:00:38.61 Today our guests are John and Millie Youngberg 00:00:39.47\00:00:41.91 and they're the directors of Marriage and Family 00:00:42.56\00:00:44.97 Commitment Incorporated. I'm glad you're here 00:00:44.98\00:00:47.49 again with us today. Thank you. Thank you, 00:00:47.78\00:00:49.84 it's nice to be here. Oh! You see all these that 00:00:49.85\00:00:51.69 we have on the table there is something that's 00:00:51.70\00:00:53.31 really going to go on here, isn't it? 00:00:53.32\00:00:55.21 I would like to review a little bit about what 00:00:57.58\00:00:59.77 we've been going through, we've been talking about 00:00:59.78\00:01:02.48 Sabbath traditions, right. That's right. 00:01:02.83\00:01:05.08 And we've been going over the preparation 00:01:05.09\00:01:08.04 day, which is Friday, and the whole week so 00:01:08.05\00:01:11.43 to speak and keeping our mind going toward 00:01:11.44\00:01:13.96 the Sabbath and planning for it and what 00:01:14.24\00:01:18.02 else that we've been talking about? 00:01:18.03\00:01:19.24 Activities, that you can have this over the Sabbath. 00:01:19.94\00:01:23.63 Right things like that. And John can you tell 00:01:24.06\00:01:27.06 us about how the Sabbath is viewed 00:01:27.09\00:01:28.81 then around the world? Well, it's certainly 00:01:28.82\00:01:31.29 exciting thing to think about the Sabbath. 00:01:31.30\00:01:33.51 The Sabbath starts on Friday evening in the 00:01:34.06\00:01:37.39 Caroline Islands. It's part of the 00:01:37.40\00:01:40.49 Kiribati Islands in the South Pacific. 00:01:40.50\00:01:42.84 And as they're at the International Date Line, 00:01:43.53\00:01:46.30 the Sabbath begins and it slowly 00:01:46.68\00:01:48.51 travels around the world. And our son lives in 00:01:48.52\00:01:52.47 Guam, our son Wes lives in Guam, 00:01:52.48\00:01:54.80 it hits him pretty quick, but still Friday night is 00:01:54.81\00:01:59.48 still Friday morning for we are, and so the travel 00:01:59.49\00:02:02.82 the, the Sabbath travels hour-by-hour and, 00:02:02.83\00:02:06.57 and every hour there are people falling on their 00:02:06.75\00:02:09.12 knees and maybe watching the sun setting 00:02:09.13\00:02:11.54 in the West and so finally the Sabbath 00:02:11.55\00:02:14.36 come to a full circle until all the world has 00:02:14.37\00:02:17.48 enjoyed the blessing of this beautiful day. 00:02:17.49\00:02:19.84 The whole family of God! That's right. 00:02:19.85\00:02:21.89 The family of earth and the family of God are 00:02:22.58\00:02:25.79 worshipped on the Sabbath day. 00:02:25.80\00:02:27.35 It's a memorial, isn't it? That's right. 00:02:28.53\00:02:30.51 We called it a birthday. 00:02:30.87\00:02:31.84 Yes I like to call it a birthday. 00:02:32.23\00:02:33.93 It's the birthday of the world we're celebrating 00:02:33.94\00:02:36.49 God's creation. And even the 00:02:37.51\00:02:39.81 celebration of the wedding of Adam and 00:02:39.82\00:02:42.85 Eve is sort of like a weekly anniversary of 00:02:42.86\00:02:45.60 the first wedding. So we are celebrating 00:02:45.61\00:02:48.25 both the family and the Sabbath, the two made 00:02:48.26\00:02:51.21 for each other. Two institutions! 00:02:51.22\00:02:52.96 As that creation point! Right! 00:02:52.97\00:02:55.35 But we're very important to God. 00:02:55.36\00:02:57.04 Yes, or else He wouldn't put it there, 00:02:57.70\00:02:59.86 that's right, so early in all of earth's history. 00:03:00.03\00:03:03.10 And don't you think that God is trying to make a 00:03:03.40\00:03:05.66 restoration and a renewal of both of these 00:03:05.84\00:03:08.35 together, oh yes I do, as He prepares the people 00:03:08.36\00:03:10.99 to go back to Eden. Amen, I do. 00:03:11.00\00:03:13.41 Now for most Seventh-day Adventist we kind of 00:03:14.07\00:03:18.39 centre our activities around the besides the 00:03:18.40\00:03:21.72 services and so forth. The noon of Sabbath, 00:03:21.73\00:03:25.45 the noon meal and so forth, sort of big 00:03:25.93\00:03:27.56 moment, right the big moment of the day aside 00:03:27.57\00:03:30.33 from our activities and fellowshipping together. 00:03:30.34\00:03:32.73 Do the Jewish people do the same thing? 00:03:33.75\00:03:35.37 Well, I'm not gonna say that we're wrong and 00:03:35.82\00:03:37.77 they're right Kathy, but it's wonderful to have 00:03:37.78\00:03:41.13 big celebrations Sabbath noon, 00:03:41.14\00:03:43.09 but I wonder if they couldn't even be more 00:03:43.53\00:03:45.36 meaningful at Friday night as the Jewish 00:03:45.37\00:03:48.43 people do. That is the centre of their Sabbath 00:03:48.44\00:03:51.50 celebration, the beginning, the high point and 00:03:51.77\00:03:54.53 of course the counterpoint of that is when we seek 00:03:54.54\00:03:57.81 farewell to the Sabbath at the end, but maybe 00:03:57.82\00:04:01.20 we had a just at least respect that point of 00:04:01.21\00:04:03.72 view and say perhaps we've something to 00:04:03.73\00:04:05.64 learn from the Jewish friends. 00:04:05.65\00:04:07.07 Now we're adapting this into Christianity, right? 00:04:08.73\00:04:10.55 That's right. We're not going to teach the 00:04:10.56\00:04:13.20 Jewish ritual, maybe the Jews won't recognize 00:04:13.21\00:04:16.74 everything we do here, but we have gone over 00:04:16.75\00:04:20.10 the Jewish ritual and we have adapted that 00:04:20.11\00:04:22.88 reading also other Christian books and 00:04:23.31\00:04:25.89 talking with Christian friends and have 00:04:25.90\00:04:27.90 adapted that to Christian celebration 00:04:27.91\00:04:29.89 on Sabbath. I'm glad to hear you say that. 00:04:29.90\00:04:31.72 I don't want anybody thinking otherwise, 00:04:31.94\00:04:34.64 but I needed for you to make that clear. 00:04:34.65\00:04:36.83 Millie, would you gonna say something? 00:04:36.84\00:04:37.81 Yes I was just going to say that in many homes 00:04:37.82\00:04:40.50 they don't adapt the Jewish tradition, 00:04:40.51\00:04:43.42 but they do start the Sabbath with just a 00:04:43.74\00:04:45.79 candle and the little children will light the 00:04:45.80\00:04:49.04 candle and it will burn through the evening and 00:04:49.05\00:04:52.47 then the next evening they blow the candle out. 00:04:52.48\00:04:56.94 All the way through? They don't usually keep 00:04:56.95\00:04:59.15 it, blow it out, blow it out after a Friday 00:04:59.16\00:05:03.89 evening and then started up again the next time. 00:05:03.90\00:05:05.87 But we have been using this family 00:05:06.67\00:05:09.97 Sabbath tradition at our home not all the time 00:05:11.70\00:05:14.28 occasionally often when we have company and 00:05:14.52\00:05:17.17 we adapted and adapted. We change it all, 00:05:17.18\00:05:20.02 all the time so. So we're just going to 00:05:20.63\00:05:22.36 give an illustration today of what one can 00:05:22.37\00:05:24.26 do and then they can make a special for their family. 00:05:24.27\00:05:26.33 That's right. Well! What you say is very 00:05:26.61\00:05:28.95 important because I think every family 00:05:28.96\00:05:31.30 should be on it's own traditions and your 00:05:31.31\00:05:34.56 traditions are probably be different than ours, 00:05:34.57\00:05:37.07 but it should have a special meaning to that 00:05:37.08\00:05:39.28 particular family. Right, as I mentioned 00:05:39.29\00:05:41.33 once before we had a Menorah. 00:05:41.34\00:05:42.74 We had the couple that brought us to the Lord, 00:05:43.28\00:05:45.89 went to Jerusalem trip and they brought us 00:05:46.84\00:05:50.37 back on Menorah and the candles that go with 00:05:50.38\00:05:52.35 it and that was really special to us for several 00:05:52.36\00:05:55.00 year and we still like to do that when we've got 00:05:55.01\00:05:57.45 the right candles for it that fit the Menorah. 00:05:57.46\00:06:00.14 And the lights are the glowing of the light and 00:06:00.58\00:06:03.19 thanking the Lord as we light those candles and 00:06:04.08\00:06:06.26 praying together. It's really special. Okay. 00:06:06.27\00:06:09.70 We were going to talk now about the Bible. 00:06:11.69\00:06:16.55 In the Bible it talks about how the Pharisees 00:06:17.71\00:06:19.54 have often times made the Sabbath a burden 00:06:20.01\00:06:22.90 or did make the Sabbath a burden, but do the 00:06:23.72\00:06:26.69 Jewish people still feel that way or is it more 00:06:26.70\00:06:29.25 happy occasion? Yes, there are certain sects of 00:06:29.26\00:06:32.02 the Jews that perhaps make the Sabbath a 00:06:32.03\00:06:34.69 burden, but many, many Jews make the Sabbath 00:06:34.70\00:06:38.24 a very happy day to the point that the great 00:06:38.25\00:06:41.10 Jewish scholars for instance Abraham, 00:06:41.11\00:06:44.35 Joshua, Heschel said it's a 00:06:44.36\00:06:46.66 sin to be sad on the Sabbath. 00:06:46.67\00:06:48.40 It's a sin to be anxious on the Sabbath. 00:06:48.83\00:06:51.16 So this should be the most joyful day. 00:06:51.44\00:06:53.58 And you know it does make good to hear 00:06:54.05\00:06:55.42 people talking like that because it's also 00:06:55.43\00:06:58.34 applicable to us. Right and we've been 00:06:58.35\00:07:01.79 told that we need to put away our worries from 00:07:01.80\00:07:05.92 the week so that the Sabbath can be a delight. 00:07:05.93\00:07:08.57 And we have rituals or rather do all our rituals 00:07:09.61\00:07:15.56 need to be the same? Or would it be 00:07:15.57\00:07:17.88 commendable if each families solve their own 00:07:17.89\00:07:20.20 like we were talking about a moment ago, 00:07:21.01\00:07:22.54 can you add to that? I think every family has 00:07:22.55\00:07:25.95 to decide it on their own rituals 00:07:25.96\00:07:27.99 what they want to do. They may try this 00:07:28.00\00:07:30.92 and try something else, but they began to get a 00:07:30.93\00:07:34.00 pattern of what they do on Friday evening. 00:07:34.01\00:07:37.19 In any ritual the big thing is meaning and to 00:07:37.33\00:07:41.81 do a ritual that has no meaning why do it. 00:07:41.82\00:07:45.02 Right! But if this has a meaning to a particular 00:07:45.03\00:07:48.81 family for their particular circumstances 00:07:48.82\00:07:51.27 then there's a reason to do it. Right. 00:07:51.66\00:07:53.75 There are some families that are ritual as every 00:07:53.76\00:07:56.33 Friday evening they take a Bible story and 00:07:56.34\00:07:59.42 acted out, the children will act it out, 00:07:59.92\00:08:01.63 and the parents will try to guess what the story is? 00:08:01.64\00:08:04.50 And that's part of their ritual, but everyone has 00:08:05.02\00:08:08.22 to decide what they've like to do? 00:08:08.23\00:08:09.71 Just to make the Sabbath a real special holyday. 00:08:10.02\00:08:13.98 Well you know we're talking about 00:08:15.23\00:08:16.91 celebrating the Sabbath and some people get 00:08:17.50\00:08:19.93 little edgy about the word celebration, 00:08:19.94\00:08:21.63 I want you to take the edge off of that, okay. 00:08:22.07\00:08:24.76 Well, I think Kathy that we have to see, 00:08:26.03\00:08:30.46 are we talking about a holiday or a holyday 00:08:31.22\00:08:35.39 they spell almost the same, but there's, 00:08:36.16\00:08:38.87 well one came from the other didn't it? 00:08:38.88\00:08:40.08 But there's quite a difference in the real 00:08:40.09\00:08:42.62 meaning of them. Right! So I would, 00:08:42.63\00:08:45.86 I would hope that we don't moving anyway 00:08:45.87\00:08:48.91 toward a holiday were anything goes as long 00:08:49.23\00:08:53.16 as you're celebrating and enjoying yourself. 00:08:53.17\00:08:55.11 Right, I'm glad for you to make that clear. 00:08:55.12\00:08:56.33 I mean some people are going to the stadium or 00:08:56.34\00:08:58.57 they're going to the circus or so on that 00:08:58.58\00:09:00.95 maybe could be appropriate for some 00:09:00.96\00:09:03.34 people on a holiday, but we think that the 00:09:03.35\00:09:07.90 holyday of the Lord has a very special vertical 00:09:08.86\00:09:12.64 meaning as well as a horizontal meaning. 00:09:12.65\00:09:14.79 Right, right. So we're not, go ahead, 00:09:14.80\00:09:16.84 we're told to remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. 00:09:16.85\00:09:19.28 So we still want to make it holy, 00:09:19.68\00:09:21.21 but we want it to be a joyful, delightful holyday. 00:09:21.39\00:09:25.23 And that doesn't mean that we have to 00:09:25.75\00:09:27.52 you know, have a sad look on our face, 00:09:27.99\00:09:29.73 but we can be joyful. You know sometimes 00:09:29.74\00:09:32.85 our children look at the Sabbath and they can 00:09:32.86\00:09:34.40 hardly wait till it's over with. 00:09:34.41\00:09:35.83 How can we change that? How do you feel about this? 00:09:36.72\00:09:38.93 Well, it just by the activities that we have 00:09:40.50\00:09:42.84 on the Sabbath day, just making plans I know in 00:09:42.85\00:09:46.21 our home frequently we would start a book on 00:09:46.22\00:09:48.62 Friday night. And then you could look forward to it. 00:09:48.63\00:09:50.98 Yes. Oh! We did that too. And then we would 00:09:50.99\00:09:53.04 read that book during the Sabbath hours. 00:09:53.05\00:09:55.54 Sometimes even after the Sabbath hours they 00:09:55.55\00:09:57.71 wanted to hear the rest of the story. 00:09:57.72\00:09:59.55 Right, right. But it depends on what we do 00:09:59.56\00:10:04.50 as to what we can do to make the day special, 00:10:06.26\00:10:09.24 if it is special the kids will enjoy. 00:10:09.25\00:10:11.46 So if it's a drag then we're gonna have kids 00:10:11.94\00:10:15.00 for clock watches. When does the sunset 00:10:15.01\00:10:17.72 because I wanna get out of here, I want to go 00:10:17.73\00:10:19.48 because I already have program or whatever, 00:10:19.49\00:10:21.50 right, but the true Jewish sense is that 00:10:21.58\00:10:25.64 we're sorry to see the Sabbath go. 00:10:25.65\00:10:27.90 And we want to, we wanted to linger a little 00:10:28.59\00:10:31.90 bit longer so we can savor it's joy. 00:10:31.91\00:10:34.95 Right, you have a little something to say about 00:10:34.96\00:10:36.59 that later maybe? Yes. 00:10:36.60\00:10:37.97 Well, what are we going to do now? 00:10:38.35\00:10:39.97 We're gonna get started with this. 00:10:39.98\00:10:41.40 Are you ready to do that? I think we're ready. 00:10:41.41\00:10:43.26 Okay, I'm anxious. I was gonna blow the 00:10:43.27\00:10:45.86 horn, but fine we will go with John today. 00:10:45.87\00:10:48.22 Okay, John you blow the horn. 00:10:48.23\00:10:49.43 You want me to blow the horn. 00:10:49.44\00:10:50.56 This would indicate that the Sabbath has arrived 00:10:50.57\00:10:53.97 and I might mention in Israel now they have 00:10:53.98\00:10:56.98 electronic, which is a very poor substitute, 00:10:56.99\00:11:00.61 which, yes, right. This is much better. 00:11:00.62\00:11:02.98 This is a true shofar horn. Shofar horn, I bought it 00:11:02.99\00:11:06.43 in Jerusalem for the Ibex. Oh! Okay, shall we 00:11:06.44\00:11:10.70 plug our ears or do we just enjoy it? 00:11:10.71\00:11:12.43 It's kind of a loud, isn't it? 00:11:13.84\00:11:14.95 Are you ready? Okay. 00:11:15.43\00:11:17.08 Very loud! I don't think I could 00:11:27.91\00:11:28.88 have done it is well as you do it. 00:11:28.89\00:11:29.87 But that says, the Sabbath has arrived and 00:11:30.09\00:11:33.35 it's so good to know that there is a certain 00:11:33.42\00:11:36.08 time when it arrives that means stop all the work 00:11:36.09\00:11:38.80 if it isn't done, it isn't done, but it's a 00:11:38.81\00:11:42.39 beginning of rest and so I kind of like some 00:11:42.40\00:11:46.61 indications that this is time 00:11:46.62\00:11:48.62 for the Sabbath to begin. And many people start 00:11:48.63\00:11:51.47 by singing songs or having music played, 00:11:51.68\00:11:54.17 15, 20 minutes, 30 minutes before the 00:11:55.44\00:11:57.71 Sabbath hour. Amen. So, then they're ready to 00:11:57.72\00:11:59.90 go into the Sabbath. And we like to sing 00:11:59.91\00:12:03.02 certain songs that we have our new song 00:12:03.03\00:12:04.96 which is "Welcome, Welcome Sabbath" 00:12:04.97\00:12:06.87 which has a Jewish sound to it? 00:12:06.88\00:12:08.70 And so we start with that. Sometime we'll sing, 00:12:09.21\00:12:11.94 Oh! Dear, Lord we come at set of sun, 00:12:13.72\00:12:15.92 different songs. We are trying to get lots 00:12:16.75\00:12:20.51 of new Jewish songs to sing because they're 00:12:20.67\00:12:22.89 happy and it just gives you a good Spirit, 00:12:22.90\00:12:25.62 a good feeling because the Sabbath is here. 00:12:25.63\00:12:27.90 From there the woman, the mother is the queen. 00:12:28.49\00:12:31.96 She is the queen of the home and the Sabbath 00:12:32.25\00:12:35.31 is the queen also. So the mother is the 00:12:35.32\00:12:38.67 one who invites the family hour to the 00:12:38.68\00:12:41.71 Sabbath hour. So I have here her prayer 00:12:41.72\00:12:45.18 that she reads to her children and family. 00:12:45.68\00:12:49.87 It goes like this. "Oh! God of your people 00:12:50.19\00:12:53.84 Israel You are holy and You have made the 00:12:53.85\00:12:58.20 Sabbath and the people of Israel holy. 00:12:58.21\00:13:01.81 You have called upon us to honor the Sabbath 00:13:02.64\00:13:05.15 with the light, with joy and with peace. 00:13:05.16\00:13:08.60 As a king and queen give love to one 00:13:09.21\00:13:11.25 another, as a bride and her bridegroom, 00:13:11.26\00:13:13.86 so have we kindled these two lights for the 00:13:14.53\00:13:18.19 love of your daughter? The Sabbath Oh! 00:13:18.20\00:13:21.46 Mighty God grant me and all of my loved 00:13:21.47\00:13:24.35 ones a chance to truly rest on this Sabbath day. 00:13:24.36\00:13:29.20 May the light of the candle strive out from 00:13:29.94\00:13:32.75 among us the Spirit of anger, the Spirit of harm. 00:13:32.76\00:13:36.52 Send Your blessing to my children that they 00:13:37.38\00:13:40.28 may walk in the ways of Your Torah, Your light. 00:13:40.29\00:13:45.36 May You ever be their God and mine Oh! Lord 00:13:46.55\00:13:51.56 my Creator and redeemer" Isn't that special? 00:13:52.02\00:13:55.31 That's beautiful. So she welcomes the Sabbath 00:13:55.32\00:13:58.14 and then she lights the candles. 00:13:58.47\00:14:01.15 And so we take the candles and we are 00:14:02.07\00:14:05.58 reminded that one candle is for redemption 00:14:05.59\00:14:08.54 and one is for creation. And when do we put in 00:14:12.55\00:14:13.52 we say, "remember The Sabbath Day". 00:14:13.53\00:14:17.15 And then we light the second candle and this 00:14:18.01\00:14:21.06 also is for redemption creation, 00:14:21.42\00:14:24.51 "to Keep It Holy". And that's a Sabbath light we 00:14:26.03\00:14:29.96 want this light in our home, God's presence 00:14:29.97\00:14:33.19 to fill our home to make it really very special. 00:14:33.50\00:14:36.42 And then we repeat the, the Fourth Commandment. 00:14:36.97\00:14:39.90 Okay. Shall we try? Let's see if we can do 00:14:40.55\00:14:41.66 that we didn't practice this very much, did we? 00:14:41.67\00:14:44.93 We're going to call on our memories. Alright. 00:14:44.94\00:14:46.98 "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. 00:14:47.82\00:14:51.24 Six days shall thy labor, and do all Thy work; 00:14:51.89\00:14:55.70 but the Seventh-day is the Sabbath of the Lord 00:14:56.22\00:14:59.53 Thy God. In it Thou shall not do any work. 00:14:59.54\00:15:04.39 Thou down Thy Son nor their daughter, 00:15:05.06\00:15:07.99 Thy man servant nor Thy manservant, 00:15:08.49\00:15:11.44 nor Thy cattle, nor Thy stranger, that is within 00:15:11.86\00:15:15.37 Thy gates. For in six days the Lord made 00:15:15.38\00:15:19.11 heaven and earth, the sea and all that in them is. 00:15:19.12\00:15:23.75 And rest at the seventh day. 00:15:24.31\00:15:26.55 Therefore the Lord bless the Sabbath day 00:15:27.24\00:15:30.32 and hollowed it ". We did okay. 00:15:30.69\00:15:33.82 We did okay. Yeah. 00:15:33.83\00:15:35.45 Sometimes you get a little confused and we 00:15:35.55\00:15:38.52 do too, but God knows what they are. 00:15:38.53\00:15:39.94 Until we remember the Sabbath day that just 00:15:40.44\00:15:43.21 helps us by saying it to remember that we are 00:15:43.22\00:15:46.28 putting our work aside. And we're gonna keep 00:15:46.29\00:15:48.44 this day as a special day. And from there the 00:15:48.45\00:15:52.59 mother often that has a silent prayer for the 00:15:52.60\00:15:56.21 family and that is rather nice. 00:15:56.22\00:15:58.89 From there we go on to singing other songs like 00:15:59.33\00:16:02.43 the Sabbath Blessing and other songs 00:16:02.98\00:16:06.57 that are really nice. Then the father blesses 00:16:06.58\00:16:10.08 the children and it's always nice to have 00:16:10.43\00:16:12.22 children in our home especially the little ones 00:16:12.59\00:16:15.02 we gather the little boys and little girls. 00:16:15.03\00:16:18.68 And John we want you to pray for the boys and 00:16:19.15\00:16:23.97 girls of our listeners. That's going to be special. 00:16:23.98\00:16:27.43 Would you do that you're going to? 00:16:27.80\00:16:28.82 So we don't have our own little ones or 00:16:28.83\00:16:30.58 grandchildren here, but. Not here right now. 00:16:30.59\00:16:31.98 They're out there. They're out there and 00:16:31.99\00:16:33.61 we're going to. And so I'm going to kneel and 00:16:33.62\00:16:35.89 this prayer is for the children of our watchers 00:16:35.90\00:16:39.79 our, our television viewers to see me. 00:16:39.80\00:16:42.90 Oh Lord of Thy people Israel. 00:16:49.91\00:16:52.85 Today we want to pray that God will make 00:16:54.11\00:16:57.63 these sons of ours, the grandchildren liken to 00:16:57.64\00:17:02.07 Ephraim and then to Manasseh. 00:17:02.08\00:17:04.54 That You make these sons strong and tall, 00:17:05.58\00:17:09.17 that You help them to be all that they can be 00:17:09.75\00:17:12.17 as they grow to reflect Your image and to their 00:17:12.18\00:17:15.92 part for our Lord God Almighty, amen. 00:17:15.93\00:17:19.86 But we don't want to forget our daughters either. 00:17:22.18\00:17:25.56 And so, we're going to have little prayer for 00:17:26.54\00:17:29.52 our daughters, our granddaughters. 00:17:29.53\00:17:31.56 May the Lord bless you young ladies, 00:17:32.71\00:17:35.19 may you be like Sarah and like Rebecca, 00:17:36.00\00:17:39.14 and like Liya and like Rachel. 00:17:40.23\00:17:42.58 May you stand for the right as Queen Esther did? 00:17:43.55\00:17:46.96 May be faithful and true like Ruth who is a 00:17:47.69\00:17:50.61 progenitor of Jesus Christ, may these young 00:17:50.62\00:17:54.21 ladies grow to be sweet and pure and 00:17:54.22\00:17:57.77 be everything that they can be, watch over them 00:17:58.39\00:18:01.32 in a special way in Jesus name, amen. 00:18:01.33\00:18:05.13 Amen. Thank you. What is next? 00:18:05.14\00:18:11.24 Okay, the next part of the program is for me. 00:18:11.25\00:18:14.04 He blesses me. Actually he reads to me 00:18:14.76\00:18:17.67 from our Proverbs. I'm the blessing man. 00:18:17.68\00:18:19.11 He is the blessing man. And he reads from 00:18:19.12\00:18:21.51 Proverbs 31, sometimes John has read all 00:18:21.52\00:18:24.99 Proverbs 31, but today 00:18:25.00\00:18:27.27 we're going to read only a portion. 00:18:27.28\00:18:28.91 So are you ready to read to me? 00:18:29.34\00:18:30.73 I'm ready. We don't necessarily kneel to do 00:18:31.07\00:18:35.04 this, okay, but I think it's very important 00:18:35.05\00:18:38.13 that the children see that the father is 00:18:38.63\00:18:41.76 affirming their mother. Amen, I do too. 00:18:41.77\00:18:44.05 And, and so that is one of the purposes here 00:18:44.53\00:18:47.37 and so, this is in abbreviated form. 00:18:47.38\00:18:49.47 Who can find a virtuous wife? 00:18:50.36\00:18:52.80 I have. For her wrath is far above rubies. 00:18:53.45\00:18:57.32 For the heart of her husband safely trust in her. 00:18:58.13\00:19:01.04 She looks well to the ways of her household 00:19:01.84\00:19:04.57 and does not eat the bread of idealness. 00:19:04.90\00:19:07.35 Her children rise up and called her blessed, 00:19:08.24\00:19:10.69 her husband also and he praises her saying, 00:19:11.27\00:19:14.33 many daughters have done well, 00:19:14.91\00:19:16.84 but you excelled them all. A woman who fears 00:19:17.33\00:19:21.61 the Lord she shall be praised. Amen! 00:19:21.62\00:19:24.39 I always like to hear him to that. 00:19:25.64\00:19:27.65 He always makes me feel really special. 00:19:27.66\00:19:29.56 I can imagine what a bonding feeling? 00:19:29.57\00:19:31.53 Yeah it's very nice and it's good for the 00:19:31.54\00:19:34.09 children as he said to hear this. 00:19:34.10\00:19:36.37 When we first did it, I said wonder why the 00:19:37.89\00:19:41.21 Bibles book of rubies? Why not diamonds 00:19:41.22\00:19:43.94 or something like that? But I was told that the 00:19:44.29\00:19:46.43 rubies are more valuable than diamonds. 00:19:46.44\00:19:48.18 Oh! I see. Anyway so I'm pretty glad with that 00:19:48.19\00:19:51.72 we are rubies, you and I and all the listening 00:19:51.73\00:19:54.89 wives out there, mothers who want to 00:19:55.25\00:19:57.33 raise their families and be the virtuous women. 00:19:57.34\00:19:59.73 That's right. Alright, now what's next? 00:19:59.74\00:20:01.85 Okay, the next part of the service is then we 00:20:01.86\00:20:05.34 usually go into more singing. 00:20:05.35\00:20:07.39 And then we have a touching time because 00:20:07.92\00:20:10.15 Friday night is a touching time where 00:20:10.16\00:20:12.53 you have your family hugs, you enjoy hugging each 00:20:12.83\00:20:16.28 other and, and you tell each other, 00:20:16.29\00:20:18.41 how important? And we say this is very 00:20:18.66\00:20:20.52 important when we have grandmas and 00:20:20.53\00:20:21.95 grandpas in the home because sometimes they 00:20:21.96\00:20:25.61 are skin hungry. They want to be hugged 00:20:25.62\00:20:28.58 and loved too. So that's the good time. 00:20:28.59\00:20:30.78 And then from there we go into what we call the 00:20:31.08\00:20:35.12 Kiddush, and say it again. 00:20:35.78\00:20:38.20 Kiddush, okay. K-I-D-D-U-S-H. 00:20:38.68\00:20:41.70 Okay. Kiddush! John what we do? 00:20:41.71\00:20:45.39 We will have the drinking of the juice 00:20:45.40\00:20:49.26 which is, it's the Bible speaks of wine, 00:20:49.27\00:20:53.83 but this is grape juice, and, unfermented, 00:20:53.84\00:20:56.92 unfermented grape juice. Okay. 00:20:56.93\00:20:58.44 And so we will drink it and John would you 00:20:58.80\00:21:02.00 lead us out in this section? 00:21:02.01\00:21:04.39 So this is called the Kiddush and this is like 00:21:04.93\00:21:09.91 toasting the bride at a wedding. 00:21:09.92\00:21:12.57 And so what we do is that we touch our 00:21:12.58\00:21:18.19 glasses, we do or we don't, you don't have to, 00:21:18.20\00:21:21.69 I like it, okay. And then we say 00:21:21.70\00:21:23.83 Likhvod Hashabbat, which means, Likhvod 00:21:24.25\00:21:28.49 Hashabbat - "for the glory of the Sabbath", 00:21:28.50\00:21:31.58 for the glory to Sabbath, for the glory. 00:21:31.59\00:21:33.45 So we will. Let say it together, 00:21:33.46\00:21:35.96 Likhvod Hashabbat, for the glory of the Sabbath. 00:21:36.64\00:21:41.17 And we wish we could cheer with our 00:21:41.56\00:21:43.12 audience, but. Oh! This is precious. 00:21:43.13\00:21:45.16 And are we to drink it all? That's why we gave you 00:21:49.32\00:21:53.30 small glasses. Often we have large 00:21:53.31\00:21:55.57 couplets at home and we just drink for a long 00:21:56.60\00:21:59.77 period of time and enjoy. And we also say 00:21:59.78\00:22:01.98 LeHayim this is dedicated to life 00:22:02.65\00:22:06.02 that the grape juice was symbolic of life 00:22:07.24\00:22:11.28 to the Jewish people. I see, right 'cause 00:22:11.29\00:22:13.47 it was the life blood of Christ for us. 00:22:13.48\00:22:16.33 Can we take the hollow bread? 00:22:16.66\00:22:18.60 Now the hollow bread is often made with very 00:22:19.52\00:22:23.00 white, white bread and it is prepared either on 00:22:23.01\00:22:29.02 Thursday or Friday. And often there will be 00:22:29.03\00:22:32.80 two loaves of bread, two loaves, one is for 00:22:32.81\00:22:36.57 the two tables of the Commandment, 00:22:37.63\00:22:41.54 sometimes people say it's like the double 00:22:42.32\00:22:46.15 portion of Amana, but I like just only 00:22:46.16\00:22:49.69 one loaf and so that's what I've done 'cause it 00:22:49.70\00:22:52.54 fits on my sofa bed. Right! And so we will 00:22:52.55\00:22:58.72 have some bread and Kathy we will let you 00:22:59.07\00:23:02.33 tear off you don't cut, but you just tear it off. 00:23:02.34\00:23:06.87 We tear it off. That's right, and it 00:23:06.88\00:23:09.68 there's a special recipe John I'll hold it for you, 00:23:10.07\00:23:12.93 and the children like the bread. 00:23:15.74\00:23:17.42 Rachael makes hollow bread, yes, she enjoys it 00:23:17.63\00:23:19.50 very much. Yes it's very nice. 00:23:19.51\00:23:21.26 And we're just going to take a little portion and 00:23:21.27\00:23:23.97 we're gonna eat just a little bit, and we wish 00:23:23.98\00:23:25.67 we could cheer with you all. 00:23:25.68\00:23:26.65 But I'm not gonna eat all of this, 00:23:26.66\00:23:27.63 but I just tore about. I'm supposed to eat now. 00:23:27.64\00:23:30.19 This is at this time we eat the hollow bread. 00:23:30.94\00:23:33.84 And so this is the Hamotzi, "Blessed art 00:23:35.20\00:23:39.60 thou, O Lord God, King of the universe, 00:23:39.61\00:23:42.19 who brings forth bread from the earth, 00:23:42.64\00:23:45.23 with joy we all eat the bread". 00:23:46.10\00:23:48.70 And so they eat their bread and then they're 00:23:50.65\00:23:53.13 often as thinking. Now in our home 00:23:53.14\00:23:55.70 we usually don't have the heavy meal 00:23:55.99\00:23:57.92 on Friday evening, but we often will do this 00:23:58.47\00:24:02.85 until we don't have the heavy meal, 00:24:03.78\00:24:05.34 but the Jewish people often will have their 00:24:05.35\00:24:07.31 favorite meal then, the women often wears 00:24:07.77\00:24:10.79 white and represent purity. And they are just 00:24:10.80\00:24:17.34 special ritual. Sometimes they will put 00:24:17.35\00:24:19.35 salt on the hollow bread, which also has 00:24:19.36\00:24:23.92 a symbol which means something to many of 00:24:24.58\00:24:28.20 the Jewish people. And when you eat the 00:24:28.21\00:24:29.95 bread and after that you have the main meal, 00:24:29.96\00:24:33.24 the main course. Now what we do is 00:24:33.25\00:24:36.17 just sing Shalom Chaverim, we sing it 00:24:36.62\00:24:39.99 together where there is peace in the home and, 00:24:40.00\00:24:42.05 and we want God's peace within our home 00:24:42.49\00:24:45.90 during the Sabbath hours. So that's, that is just a 00:24:45.91\00:24:50.48 simple little traditional activity, amen, 00:24:50.82\00:24:54.80 that can be in a home, that can bring a blessing. 00:24:54.81\00:24:57.23 Now you spoke of how they, how we can linger 00:24:58.45\00:25:02.04 long not wanting the Sabbath to be gone 00:25:02.05\00:25:06.12 would you like to tell us a 00:25:07.30\00:25:08.75 little more about the stars? 00:25:08.76\00:25:10.64 It's the Jewish people have this custom that 00:25:12.87\00:25:15.95 the Sabbath continues until they can see five stars. 00:25:15.96\00:25:20.30 And so, we sometimes send out the children 00:25:21.44\00:25:23.95 outside to see if they see five stars not that 00:25:23.96\00:25:27.18 it's a doctrine of any kind. 00:25:27.19\00:25:28.77 No, not at all. But it's sort of makes 00:25:28.78\00:25:30.68 a game out of it. And they enjoy coming 00:25:30.69\00:25:33.36 and it's, I saw them you know there's what. 00:25:33.37\00:25:35.76 Somebody says well what happens if it's a 00:25:35.77\00:25:37.44 cloudy day. Yes, we've heard that's we have. 00:25:37.45\00:25:40.69 Right, where we have, we have clocks and 00:25:40.70\00:25:42.12 watches of course, but the point is that even as 00:25:42.13\00:25:47.13 the Sabbath is received early 00:25:47.14\00:25:49.36 and we hate to see it go. And at the other end of 00:25:50.07\00:25:54.82 all this and the Friday night, and the Sabbath 00:25:54.83\00:25:57.19 night, then we gather with the family and we 00:25:57.20\00:26:00.05 probably would light the candles again. 00:26:00.06\00:26:02.06 And the children enjoy lighting the candles and 00:26:03.29\00:26:07.02 revive for the opportunity of lighting 00:26:07.03\00:26:09.53 them, of lighting them. I would, I did. 00:26:09.54\00:26:11.04 One child and one candle one another. 00:26:11.05\00:26:12.89 They'd like blowing them out too. 00:26:12.90\00:26:14.46 They enjoy blowing the candles out, 00:26:15.70\00:26:17.24 they are vital. Right! And that's, are we going 00:26:17.25\00:26:20.93 to do that here or do you want to? 00:26:20.94\00:26:22.54 We can do that. We also will have fragrance 00:26:23.23\00:26:26.40 like our papery in the home, which indicates 00:26:26.41\00:26:29.40 the Sabbath which is so special. 00:26:29.64\00:26:32.07 There is a fragrance that goes from the Sabbath 00:26:32.47\00:26:35.45 and we want to continue all week long. 00:26:35.46\00:26:36.43 Amen. So Friday night and Sabbath night 00:26:37.99\00:26:42.41 are both very special. Amen. And that one is 00:26:42.42\00:26:45.36 the counterpart of the other. 00:26:45.37\00:26:47.15 So as the sun is setting in the West and maybe 00:26:47.68\00:26:50.79 has already set we get together and the 00:26:50.80\00:26:53.28 incenses lighted and perfumes the house 00:26:53.29\00:26:56.45 and we say Lord may Your Spirit pervade and 00:26:56.79\00:27:00.49 perfume this coming week and how sorry we 00:27:00.50\00:27:03.21 are to see Your Holy Day gone, we wish it 00:27:03.22\00:27:06.20 would have lingered longer, but until six 00:27:06.21\00:27:09.37 days from now when again we welcome Your 00:27:09.38\00:27:13.27 Queen, the Sabbath, we say farewell and then 00:27:13.28\00:27:17.52 of course comes the blowing out of the candles. 00:27:17.72\00:27:20.52 Millie will let you be the child to 00:27:20.53\00:27:22.49 blows up the candles. 00:27:22.50\00:27:23.72 Ah! That's beautiful. I think in Spanish we 00:27:25.90\00:27:27.93 say Feliz Semana. Feliz Semana! 00:27:27.94\00:27:31.88 Which means, happy week? Happy week! 00:27:31.89\00:27:34.98 And may the Lord bless you as you learn to keep 00:27:35.37\00:27:38.46 the Sabbath day holy. John, will you lead us 00:27:38.47\00:27:41.28 out with prayer? Lord, we are thankful 00:27:41.29\00:27:44.64 for Your Queen the Sabbath, 00:27:44.65\00:27:46.23 we are thankful for the joy this Sabbath has 00:27:46.88\00:27:49.04 brought to us. We pray that this blessing 00:27:49.05\00:27:51.81 will be extensive to each one of our viewers 00:27:51.82\00:27:54.18 and we long for the day that we will be together 00:27:54.85\00:27:56.96 in heaven and to the new earth 00:27:56.97\00:27:58.94 forth from the one Sabbath. 00:27:58.95\00:28:00.25
