Welcome to Thinking About Home.
00:00:32.69\00:00:33.92
I am Kathy Matthews
and I'm glad that you've
00:00:33.93\00:00:36.58
joined us today.
Our guests today are
00:00:36.59\00:00:39.14
John and Millie Youngberg.
00:00:39.15\00:00:40.57
They've been professors
at Andrews University.
00:00:40.58\00:00:43.99
They've taught
there. And they're also
00:00:44.00\00:00:45.80
directors of a
Marriage and Family Commitment
00:00:45.81\00:00:48.73
Incorporated. And I
just want to welcome you.
00:00:48.74\00:00:50.80
Thank you. I'm
thankful that you're here.
00:00:51.33\00:00:52.92
Happy to be
here. Good. You know we
00:00:52.93\00:00:55.46
all have the
similar burden, don't we?
00:00:55.47\00:00:57.56
We want to make sure
that our Church members
00:00:57.57\00:01:00.43
and the family of
God understands family
00:01:00.44\00:01:05.50
worship, don't we?
We have that burden in
00:01:05.51\00:01:08.24
our heart for them to
realize the beauty of it
00:01:08.25\00:01:11.72
all and today's
program titled is
00:01:11.73\00:01:14.19
"Making Family
Worship Spiritual and Fun."
00:01:14.20\00:01:16.76
And I just want to get
started, John with you on
00:01:17.40\00:01:21.03
a question of,
should our family worship be
00:01:21.04\00:01:23.89
designed kind of like
the Church experience where
00:01:23.90\00:01:26.17
the father is the
only to read and you know,
00:01:26.18\00:01:29.39
we're always reverent
and quiet and only the
00:01:29.40\00:01:32.27
father does all the
suggestions and so forth?
00:01:32.28\00:01:34.46
Is that how we always
need to do family worship?
00:01:34.47\00:01:36.92
Well, you know Kathy, I
started out a little bit
00:01:37.57\00:01:40.06
that way, but I soon
learned that the children
00:01:40.07\00:01:42.87
got bored and Millie
said, well why don't you
00:01:42.88\00:01:46.66
pass it around a little bit?
00:01:46.67\00:01:47.85
And when I had a five
minute of worship they
00:01:48.41\00:01:52.15
were already
bored, but then I had John
00:01:52.16\00:01:54.59
do one night and
Millie do one and grandma
00:01:54.60\00:01:59.08
and pretty soon they
didn't say they were too
00:01:59.09\00:02:02.09
long anymore. They
were twice as long,
00:02:02.10\00:02:04.39
but they enjoyed
them because they were in
00:02:04.40\00:02:05.92
charge. So it is a
question of participation.
00:02:05.93\00:02:08.56
I believe that we
learned differently and there
00:02:08.57\00:02:12.45
is different
modalities of learning and if we
00:02:12.46\00:02:14.84
have activity, if
we become involved,
00:02:14.85\00:02:18.02
if we talk and we
play, we work on fields,
00:02:18.03\00:02:23.44
we remember what
we're doing a little bit
00:02:23.45\00:02:25.56
longer and it's more enjoyable.
00:02:25.57\00:02:27.45
So I believe that
having the whole family
00:02:27.46\00:02:31.28
becoming involved
is very important.
00:02:31.29\00:02:33.55
Should we give another
name to family worships
00:02:34.70\00:02:36.67
since worship seems
to imply only adoration
00:02:36.68\00:02:39.41
and prays or?
Actually in the religious
00:02:39.42\00:02:42.88
world today Kathy,
they used to speak of family
00:02:42.89\00:02:46.09
devotions. The
Catholics may talk about family
00:02:46.10\00:02:48.77
prayers. Right.
We are in a minority
00:02:48.78\00:02:52.01
speaking of family
worship yet family worship has
00:02:52.02\00:02:55.99
become such a
Seventh- day Adventist word and
00:02:56.00\00:03:00.41
phrases deeply embedded, right,
00:03:00.42\00:03:03.10
in our psychology. And
I don't have any problem
00:03:03.11\00:03:06.40
with the word,
but we need to amplify
00:03:06.41\00:03:08.55
it's meaning, right,
and so it means more than
00:03:08.56\00:03:11.06
just being quiet,
right, and secret.
00:03:11.07\00:03:13.73
Right, and there
is a time for that,
00:03:13.74\00:03:15.18
but we also want
to like you said me,
00:03:15.19\00:03:17.07
use all the
avenues of learning and,
00:03:17.08\00:03:19.43
and others join in,
right? That's right. Okay!
00:03:19.44\00:03:23.49
Are there some
guidelines regarding family
00:03:23.50\00:03:25.33
worship that you have for us?
00:03:25.34\00:03:26.53
Well Ellen White says
family worship should be
00:03:27.26\00:03:29.54
brief and
spirited and full of life,
00:03:29.55\00:03:33.52
extremely interesting.
She says it should be
00:03:33.53\00:03:36.16
the most interesting
time of the day that the
00:03:36.17\00:03:38.58
children will look
forward to it with great
00:03:38.59\00:03:40.89
pleasure. Can't you
just see the children
00:03:40.90\00:03:42.88
maybe they're,
they're getting ready,
00:03:42.89\00:03:44.84
maybe mom and dad
have told a story in the
00:03:44.85\00:03:47.18
morning, now the
kids gonna telling with
00:03:47.19\00:03:49.31
flannelgraph at
night back to the family.
00:03:49.32\00:03:51.88
Right. And they're
preparing during the
00:03:51.89\00:03:53.62
day to get ready,
right, something important
00:03:53.63\00:03:56.24
to them. And that
will help them to remember
00:03:56.25\00:03:57.84
and want, I think it
would be. That's right.
00:03:57.85\00:03:59.35
It would help them to
imprinted on their minds
00:03:59.36\00:04:02.40
and if you do that
over and over and over again
00:04:02.41\00:04:05.87
each day of their
life, how can they forget?
00:04:05.88\00:04:08.54
That's right.
You know we may not,
00:04:08.55\00:04:10.99
we may not always bet a
thousand and every family
00:04:11.00\00:04:13.67
worship won't be
extremely interesting,
00:04:13.68\00:04:16.74
but we ought to do our
best and those memories
00:04:16.75\00:04:19.48
linger on. I still remember that
00:04:19.49\00:04:21.65
we were six children
and my father and mother
00:04:21.66\00:04:23.81
we always had the
family worship and it made a
00:04:23.82\00:04:27.66
difference on me and
we have always had family
00:04:27.67\00:04:31.08
worship morning and evening.
00:04:31.09\00:04:32.34
Still together
just the two of you.
00:04:32.78\00:04:34.25
No, and with the kids
when they were home and
00:04:34.26\00:04:37.10
so those are sort of
some of the things that we
00:04:37.11\00:04:39.63
pass along to the
coming generations.
00:04:39.64\00:04:42.05
Right and we want
to keep it going on.
00:04:42.06\00:04:43.38
That's right. We
actually are modeling when we
00:04:43.39\00:04:46.34
have family
worship; we are modeling for
00:04:46.35\00:04:48.43
our children so when
they grow up they will be
00:04:48.44\00:04:50.99
able to know how to
conduct a good family
00:04:51.00\00:04:53.44
worship experience.
Well, how important is
00:04:53.45\00:04:56.33
the variety then to
making the family worship
00:04:56.34\00:04:59.30
enjoyable and
spirited? Well, I remember we
00:04:59.31\00:05:03.04
wanted to have
something on the last day of
00:05:03.05\00:05:05.61
that's for our
family, for family worship and
00:05:05.62\00:05:08.21
we kept doing at night
after night after night.
00:05:08.22\00:05:10.94
Soon our son say, well
this is getting boring,
00:05:10.95\00:05:13.65
can we do something different?
00:05:13.66\00:05:14.99
And I think variety is
the spice of life and if
00:05:15.60\00:05:19.12
we have all sorts
of different kinds of
00:05:19.13\00:05:22.24
activities, the
children are very interested in
00:05:22.25\00:05:26.41
the family worship
and they're wondering what
00:05:26.42\00:05:28.11
do we're gonna do tonight?
00:05:28.12\00:05:29.11
So, so what are we
going to do tonight?
00:05:29.12\00:05:31.80
Yes. Well, Andrew
Philips, Dr. Philips wrote the
00:05:31.81\00:05:35.66
citation of the family
worship and he found that
00:05:35.67\00:05:38.24
the most remembered
and appreciated dynamic
00:05:38.25\00:05:42.05
family worship contains
elements such as quieting
00:05:42.06\00:05:46.22
the people who
come to family worship.
00:05:46.23\00:05:48.29
Things like what's the
best thing that happened
00:05:48.82\00:05:51.41
to you today everybody shares.
00:05:51.42\00:05:54.09
And then you go on
some soft disclosure who you
00:05:54.53\00:05:57.70
are and people
participating, and.
00:05:57.71\00:06:01.96
Well, that sounds like
somebody outside of the
00:06:01.97\00:06:03.48
family though when
you've invited visitors then.
00:06:03.49\00:06:05.57
No we, that's right,
even. Or the just family
00:06:05.58\00:06:07.37
members. Even the
kids the John says,
00:06:07.38\00:06:09.96
our son John has
well, I don't know something
00:06:09.97\00:06:12.07
good must have happen,
but I did ran it I guess
00:06:12.08\00:06:14.23
on these three times a day,
00:06:14.24\00:06:15.75
so we all have a
little laugh you know, right,
00:06:15.76\00:06:18.47
and so we're,
we're telling who we are,
00:06:18.48\00:06:20.16
where we're at
in life's journey?
00:06:20.17\00:06:22.70
Encourage the
members of the family to,
00:06:22.71\00:06:25.87
to tell their own
story, God's story of course,
00:06:25.88\00:06:30.15
but the story of who
they are and to have an
00:06:30.16\00:06:33.64
affirmation time.
Affirming my good wife
00:06:33.65\00:06:37.18
Millie on a Friday
night or affirming the kids
00:06:37.19\00:06:40.22
we're glad that you're
walking on life's journey
00:06:40.23\00:06:42.84
and we're right there with you.
00:06:42.85\00:06:44.78
Encouraging them
put encouraging them.
00:06:44.79\00:06:46.90
But we also want to
have an application to of
00:06:46.91\00:06:51.19
our spiritual things
for their needs for that day
00:06:51.20\00:06:54.13
and so, we are
concern about their home work
00:06:54.14\00:06:57.45
problems, where is
the paper that they lost.
00:06:57.46\00:06:59.92
We're, we're concerned
about our son getting a
00:06:59.93\00:07:03.31
job and applying the
Bible to that we can,
00:07:03.32\00:07:07.27
we can all pray
together that he will find the
00:07:07.28\00:07:10.79
job, we can also...So,
you're talking about if
00:07:10.80\00:07:13.22
there are
something like that going on,
00:07:13.23\00:07:14.96
that's right, in the
life that some thought and
00:07:14.97\00:07:18.05
fore planning could
take place, that's right,
00:07:18.06\00:07:19.98
by the parents and they
could take the scripture
00:07:19.99\00:07:23.15
and say and claims
some promises and then apply
00:07:24.98\00:07:28.82
it to whatever is going
on with the child or the
00:07:28.83\00:07:31.53
other person, other
spouse and so forth in
00:07:31.54\00:07:34.05
their life. That's
true like a child who needs
00:07:34.06\00:07:37.28
a job you might say,
well you know it's says,
00:07:37.29\00:07:39.48
seek ye first,
for seeking of God now
00:07:39.49\00:07:41.20
these things will be
added on to you and so as
00:07:41.21\00:07:43.87
we pray and study God
just gonna guide you into
00:07:43.88\00:07:46.75
this work that you
won't get and God says I will
00:07:46.76\00:07:53.08
show you things
that what you know not.
00:07:53.09\00:07:54.85
You know there is
a job there for you.
00:07:54.86\00:07:56.75
You know just apply
the Bible in the scripture
00:07:56.76\00:08:00.43
to the needs of
the family, right,
00:08:00.44\00:08:02.56
and that makes the
family a Close Net Family and
00:08:02.57\00:08:05.43
there is relationship
that's going on that's
00:08:05.44\00:08:08.17
beautiful. It's being
built. We've talked about
00:08:08.18\00:08:11.00
adoration and
praise a little bit.
00:08:11.01\00:08:12.49
Are there some
other dimensions then to
00:08:12.50\00:08:14.17
family worship?
I think Kathy that
00:08:14.18\00:08:16.86
what we usually talk
about worship is praise
00:08:17.81\00:08:20.21
and the adoration,
but there are other
00:08:20.22\00:08:22.08
dimensions. For
instance, covenant building,
00:08:22.09\00:08:25.51
that we are the
Youngberg family,
00:08:26.23\00:08:28.53
you are the Matthew's
family what it means to be
00:08:28.54\00:08:31.50
a Matthews and that we
have a family covenant,
00:08:31.51\00:08:34.78
but not only with each other,
00:08:34.79\00:08:36.05
but a covenant
between our family and God and
00:08:36.06\00:08:39.83
our family in
various occasion we've gotten
00:08:39.84\00:08:43.40
together and usually
in the solemn special
00:08:43.41\00:08:45.98
occasion, and we've
said okay, come what may,
00:08:45.99\00:08:50.03
we may have our
differences that have a
00:08:50.04\00:08:51.69
problems, but we're
going through together and
00:08:51.70\00:08:54.24
we'll make a promise a
covenant with each other.
00:08:54.25\00:08:57.12
Now, just before we got started.
00:08:57.13\00:08:58.53
I ask you about
the word covenant and,
00:08:58.54\00:09:00.34
and you've, you've
described it a little
00:09:00.35\00:09:02.67
there, but just to
find it more specifically
00:09:02.68\00:09:05.37
covenant means. Yes that's,
00:09:05.38\00:09:06.70
that's a solemn though,
a solemn promise is more
00:09:06.71\00:09:09.80
than just say and well,
my goals for tomorrow are
00:09:09.81\00:09:12.33
such and such.
Right, yeah. So, hey,
00:09:12.34\00:09:14.02
we thought this
through and by the Lord's help,
00:09:14.03\00:09:16.47
right, and with
each other's witnesses.
00:09:16.48\00:09:19.35
This is what we're
going to do so help us God.
00:09:19.36\00:09:22.52
Right, so it's
just more prominent and
00:09:22.53\00:09:24.10
more solid. That's
right, and a family worship
00:09:24.11\00:09:26.87
experience I believe
can also claim the blood of
00:09:26.88\00:09:30.71
Jesus over the family
that we don't let there
00:09:30.72\00:09:34.02
let our children leave
outdoors in morning to the
00:09:34.03\00:09:37.01
wicked world out there,
seeing without them being
00:09:37.02\00:09:40.57
covered by the
blood of Jesus Christ.
00:09:40.58\00:09:42.74
So, that's another
dimension. That's another
00:09:42.75\00:09:44.54
dimension. So, first
there is adoration of
00:09:44.55\00:09:45.88
praise. Covenant! And
then, and claiming the
00:09:45.89\00:09:49.29
merits of the blood
of Christ over the family
00:09:49.30\00:09:51.88
for that day. You know,
I think of when you said
00:09:51.89\00:09:56.08
that to me earlier
and then now that you're
00:09:56.09\00:09:57.77
saying it I just think
that's a most beautiful
00:09:57.78\00:10:00.46
thing to remember that
it's, it's, it's probably
00:10:00.47\00:10:03.45
forgotten to a
great degree and I really
00:10:03.46\00:10:06.43
appreciate you're
bringing that out.
00:10:06.44\00:10:07.67
And isn't that what
the Gospel is about, amen,
00:10:07.68\00:10:09.93
the word of Jesus,
amen. And we need to apply
00:10:09.94\00:10:12.49
the Gospel to
our lives everyday.
00:10:12.50\00:10:14.46
And as little ones
grow up and you're talking
00:10:14.47\00:10:16.68
like this, you're
using words from scripture
00:10:16.69\00:10:18.88
like that. How much
more then can they mentally
00:10:18.89\00:10:21.60
relate later to
the Gospel like that?
00:10:21.61\00:10:25.26
It begins to take on a
lot more meaning to them.
00:10:25.27\00:10:27.97
Everything Kathy that
also there is the whole
00:10:27.98\00:10:31.15
question of
instruction and family worship.
00:10:31.16\00:10:34.62
This is where our
children learn to get ready for
00:10:34.63\00:10:37.52
Baptism; they
learned the Bible doctrines,
00:10:37.53\00:10:40.02
but more than
just doctrines they're
00:10:40.03\00:10:43.12
learning, we're
actually passing our heritage to
00:10:43.13\00:10:46.71
our family you know
the, the Christian Church is
00:10:46.72\00:10:50.04
always only, only
one generation from
00:10:50.05\00:10:52.36
extinction. And if we
should failed to pass on
00:10:52.37\00:10:55.60
the torch then
things would end up,
00:10:55.61\00:10:58.55
of course God won't
permit that to happened,
00:10:58.56\00:11:00.61
but we don't wanted
to happen in our family
00:11:00.62\00:11:02.97
either. No, no. That
the light that we have
00:11:02.98\00:11:05.65
received from our
parents or grandparents just
00:11:05.66\00:11:08.57
that that torch
should somehow fall from our
00:11:08.58\00:11:11.93
hands, yes, before we
passed it onto another
00:11:11.94\00:11:14.38
generation. We want
our children saved and we
00:11:14.39\00:11:16.64
want us all together,
don't we? That's right.
00:11:16.65\00:11:18.04
Well, there is the
transmission of religious
00:11:18.05\00:11:20.85
heritages also
includes helping our children to
00:11:20.86\00:11:25.56
find Christ and to
accept Him as the Lord
00:11:25.57\00:11:28.67
of their life and
leading them to this point and
00:11:28.68\00:11:32.41
it's so exciting
when a child says hey,
00:11:32.42\00:11:36.43
I really want to be a Christian,
00:11:36.44\00:11:38.06
and really love
Jesus, I'm so sorry for all
00:11:38.07\00:11:42.30
my sins. And I want God
to guide me and this can
00:11:42.31\00:11:47.22
be done during the
family worship time.
00:11:47.23\00:11:49.52
To learn to love the
Lord and want to trust and
00:11:49.53\00:11:53.37
obey Him, right. Is
there any other dimensions?
00:11:53.38\00:11:56.04
And the fifth
dimension is celebration like we
00:11:56.05\00:11:59.47
celebrate the
children's Baptisms,
00:11:59.48\00:12:01.33
have the special
breakfast they come and say hey,
00:12:01.34\00:12:04.06
what's the big deal,
candles and everything
00:12:04.07\00:12:07.67
is spread out
here? And Oh! December 6,
00:12:07.68\00:12:11.26
this is the fifth anniversary of
00:12:11.27\00:12:13.99
our Baptism. I
have my new birth.
00:12:14.00\00:12:15.69
And then I took out
the pictures of the Baptism
00:12:15.70\00:12:18.56
and show them,
took out the Baptism
00:12:18.57\00:12:20.62
certificate that
they had signed and said,
00:12:20.63\00:12:23.23
Millie and I are so
proud of you boys because
00:12:23.24\00:12:26.63
you're on your
journey toward the kingdom and
00:12:26.64\00:12:29.59
we want to support
you. And then Millie brought
00:12:29.60\00:12:32.07
out of scrunch his
breakfast that just
00:12:32.08\00:12:34.43
kind the kids are like
and nobody complaint about
00:12:34.44\00:12:37.16
family worship that day.
00:12:37.17\00:12:38.25
Oh! No, I'm sure
they didn't, yeah. So,
00:12:38.26\00:12:40.64
there they are five
dimensions; adoration,
00:12:40.65\00:12:43.81
covenant renewal,
sacrifice claim in the
00:12:43.82\00:12:47.80
blood, fourth is instruction or
00:12:47.81\00:12:50.34
transmitted the
religious heritage and finally
00:12:50.35\00:12:52.64
celebration. Okay, we
now let's talk a little
00:12:52.65\00:12:56.03
bit about music
in family devotions.
00:12:56.04\00:12:57.81
What do you have there?
00:12:57.82\00:12:58.79
Well, there are so many
things that we can't do,
00:12:59.56\00:13:01.06
but music is like a
prayer and it's such an
00:13:01.07\00:13:04.22
important part we can
learn scripture because of
00:13:04.23\00:13:07.82
our music that we
sing, we can learn this very
00:13:07.83\00:13:13.11
songs, but some other
things that we suggest
00:13:13.12\00:13:15.78
John plays the
piano really well, really,
00:13:15.79\00:13:19.08
and sometimes he just
go sit at the piano and
00:13:19.09\00:13:22.38
start playing and we
guess what is the song that
00:13:22.39\00:13:25.48
he is playing, so that
could be one other things
00:13:25.49\00:13:27.10
you could do. That's right,
00:13:27.11\00:13:28.08
another you might have
the children learn a new
00:13:28.09\00:13:30.54
song every month.
And I'm saying we have
00:13:30.55\00:13:34.17
like the old
economy, the new economy and
00:13:34.18\00:13:37.55
stock market and so
on. We have the old music
00:13:37.56\00:13:39.97
and the music in
today's life of our children.
00:13:39.98\00:13:43.80
I'm suggesting maybe
learn some praise song
00:13:43.81\00:13:46.85
one week or one month,
next month learn something
00:13:46.86\00:13:50.97
good hymns with
the real message.
00:13:50.98\00:13:53.71
So that they're not
loss with those messages,
00:13:53.72\00:13:55.25
that's right, those are
such heart felt messages,
00:13:55.26\00:13:57.40
born of the
experience. That's right. Oh!
00:13:57.41\00:14:00.13
I like that, what
else? And then other we can
00:14:00.14\00:14:02.42
learn the songs that
have a special story behind
00:14:02.43\00:14:07.32
them that those are
always interesting to tell
00:14:07.33\00:14:11.10
the story and then follow them.
00:14:11.11\00:14:12.88
It is now all with
my soul with the man.
00:14:12.89\00:14:14.45
Oh! You're talking
about the background.
00:14:14.46\00:14:16.33
Yeah, and the ocean
where is wife and daughter
00:14:16.34\00:14:18.80
had died it is
well with my soul.
00:14:18.81\00:14:21.14
And then sing the
song. Right. One thing I like
00:14:21.15\00:14:24.22
to is, to have the
family just right out a little
00:14:24.23\00:14:28.10
beginning of the
song like I love Jesus,
00:14:28.11\00:14:32.54
mommy loves, make it
up. Yeah, just make it up.
00:14:32.55\00:14:36.22
I love Jesus, mommy love Jesus,
00:14:36.23\00:14:37.91
daddy loves Jesus
and so and then put it to
00:14:37.92\00:14:40.58
music or make a song
regarding praising God,
00:14:40.59\00:14:44.11
praising the majestic
Father of the lovely Jesus
00:14:44.12\00:14:48.14
praise Him for the
Holy Spirit who guides us
00:14:48.15\00:14:51.47
daily and so, and
then just making the song.
00:14:51.48\00:14:53.51
It's fun. They become,
we did this with a group
00:14:53.52\00:14:57.68
perform, Young
musicians and we said, put music
00:14:57.69\00:15:02.80
to these words and
they did and I said to them
00:15:02.81\00:15:05.54
now. And enjoyed
it. They enjoyed it,
00:15:05.55\00:15:07.31
and then I said now
this is your first musical
00:15:07.32\00:15:10.63
composition or so
you know they're doing
00:15:12.31\00:15:14.20
something. Was
this a family member or
00:15:14.21\00:15:15.49
other folks? No, it
was, we had a whole group of
00:15:15.50\00:15:17.78
young people over our home,
00:15:17.79\00:15:19.82
who are musicians and
actually it was recital?
00:15:19.83\00:15:22.67
Oh! Really? It's
really nice. You know,
00:15:22.68\00:15:25.57
we have a video
clip on that don't we?
00:15:25.58\00:15:27.16
We don't, we have
something that you want
00:15:27.17\00:15:28.41
to show about, about
music we could do that now.
00:15:28.42\00:15:31.53
We'll see some
real families singing a
00:15:31.54\00:15:34.22
family worship. Okay, alright.
00:15:34.23\00:15:35.38
Only a boy named
David Only a little sling
00:15:39.11\00:15:43.31
Only a boy named David
But he could pray and sing
00:15:43.32\00:15:47.95
Only a boy named
David Only a rippling brook
00:15:48.57\00:15:52.54
Only a boy named David
00:15:53.15\00:15:55.15
And five little stones he took.
00:15:55.16\00:15:57.01
And one little
stone went in the sling
00:15:57.02\00:16:00.05
And the sling
went round and round
00:16:00.06\00:16:02.06
And one little
stone went in the sling
00:16:02.07\00:16:04.77
And the sling
went round and round
00:16:04.78\00:16:06.79
And round and
round And round and round
00:16:06.80\00:16:09.44
And round and round and round
00:16:09.45\00:16:11.84
And one little
stone went up in the air
00:16:11.85\00:16:16.39
And the giant
came tumbling down.
00:16:16.40\00:16:22.63
[Foreign Language]
00:16:22.64\00:16:54.00
There's nothing
to hard for God to do
00:16:54.64\00:16:59.25
in this world we're living in
00:16:59.26\00:17:04.06
No matter how situation seem you
00:17:04.07\00:17:08.48
could put your trust in Him
00:17:08.49\00:17:11.73
He parted the Red Sea and
00:17:11.74\00:17:15.69
He may bring you through
00:17:15.70\00:17:17.65
Because nothing, oh nothing
00:17:17.66\00:17:21.24
that God cannot do.
00:17:21.25\00:17:24.25
Nothing, nothing
that God cannot do He has
00:17:24.26\00:17:31.39
the answers for the
problem you go through
00:17:31.40\00:17:35.52
Nothing, oh
nothing that God cannot do
00:17:36.03\00:17:41.15
just have faith in Him
00:17:41.16\00:17:43.61
And he will work
things there for you
00:17:43.62\00:17:46.76
Nothing, nothing
that God cannot do
00:17:46.77\00:17:52.01
He has the answers for the
00:17:52.02\00:17:54.81
problems you go through
00:17:54.82\00:17:56.80
Nothing, oh
nothing that God cannot do
00:17:57.31\00:18:02.16
just have faith in Him
00:18:02.17\00:18:04.42
And He will work
things there for you
00:18:04.43\00:18:07.38
Just have faith
in Him and He will
00:18:07.39\00:18:10.48
work things there for you.
00:18:10.49\00:18:12.68
Just have faith
in Him and He will
00:18:12.69\00:18:16.88
work things there for you.
00:18:16.89\00:18:22.68
Amen, shall we
pray? Let the words of my
00:18:22.69\00:18:25.83
mouth and the
meditation of our hearts;
00:18:25.84\00:18:28.39
be acceptable in
Thy sight, Oh Lord,
00:18:28.40\00:18:31.38
our strength and our redeemer
00:18:31.39\00:18:33.23
for Christ sake, amen.
00:18:33.24\00:18:35.25
John is there anything
else that you would like
00:18:36.46\00:18:37.87
to say about music in the video?
00:18:37.88\00:18:39.44
I think the video clip
show us that worship is a
00:18:39.89\00:18:43.66
creative experience
and music is very creative.
00:18:43.67\00:18:46.58
When the children are
doing something like that
00:18:47.17\00:18:49.12
it brings out the
best within them and helps
00:18:49.13\00:18:52.66
them to be all they can be.
00:18:52.67\00:18:53.84
Right! Millie we've
talked about a lot about
00:18:53.85\00:18:56.74
music now, what
more can we do in family
00:18:56.75\00:19:00.24
devotions whether it
would be spiritual and fun
00:19:00.25\00:19:02.37
when we were using the Bible?
00:19:02.38\00:19:03.56
There are just a lot
of interesting things that
00:19:04.15\00:19:06.04
we can do to teach the Bible,
00:19:06.05\00:19:09.13
to bring the Bible
alive and to find new things
00:19:09.14\00:19:13.79
in the Bible I think
one of the things that we
00:19:13.80\00:19:15.52
can search for is something that
00:19:15.53\00:19:17.86
new that we have
never heard before.
00:19:17.87\00:19:20.82
Now, a few years ago we
were saying John what's,
00:19:20.83\00:19:26.17
what's new in the
Bible and he came up with
00:19:26.18\00:19:28.59
Jebus. Tell us what you said?
00:19:28.60\00:19:31.19
Now, well you know
it's popular everybody knows
00:19:31.20\00:19:33.19
about Jebus. Yes,
everybody knows about the
00:19:33.20\00:19:34.17
Jebus now, but some
little known detail of
00:19:34.18\00:19:37.78
the Bible that can
make a lot of difference.
00:19:37.79\00:19:39.81
For instance, Timothy
came from a divided home
00:19:39.82\00:19:43.22
and most people would
have missed that point
00:19:43.91\00:19:46.43
altogether, divided
homes can still have worships
00:19:46.44\00:19:49.84
and change the
lives of children.
00:19:49.85\00:19:52.06
Right, well okay, you
chose to tell us about
00:19:52.07\00:19:55.01
Timothy rather than Jebus on,
00:19:55.02\00:19:56.63
on these new little
pieces that we could find
00:19:56.64\00:19:58.91
in the Bible. What
about other stories?
00:19:58.92\00:20:02.33
What can we do with?
Well, we can take various,
00:20:02.34\00:20:04.53
yeah, making the
stories more alive. Right!
00:20:04.54\00:20:07.31
I think when we start
thinking about the feeling
00:20:07.82\00:20:10.33
of those individuals
who are Bible characters
00:20:10.34\00:20:13.26
that we have
heard about in the past,
00:20:13.27\00:20:15.29
well this comes alive
they come alive to us.
00:20:15.30\00:20:19.70
They're more important
and we take the story of
00:20:19.71\00:20:21.98
like the paralytic.
He was on his deaths
00:20:21.99\00:20:26.65
door and he had
friends who want to take him
00:20:26.66\00:20:29.60
over to Jesus and so
when we start thinking of a,
00:20:29.61\00:20:33.43
what, what the feeling of the,
00:20:33.44\00:20:34.63
the people who are
carrying him John what
00:20:34.64\00:20:37.28
might have been the things?
00:20:37.29\00:20:38.26
So, there were
four friends and let,
00:20:38.27\00:20:39.60
let's not forget the
four friends and what
00:20:39.61\00:20:41.46
they did he
wouldn't have been healed,
00:20:41.47\00:20:43.56
if they wouldn't have
been for the four friends,
00:20:43.57\00:20:44.83
for his friends,
but the other thing is,
00:20:44.84\00:20:46.77
it was Peter's house
and you imagine Mrs. Peter
00:20:46.78\00:20:50.63
when all of a sudden
she looked up and saw
00:20:50.64\00:20:52.27
that the roof is
coming apart and all the rest.
00:20:52.28\00:20:54.84
How would Peter and
his wife felt about the
00:20:54.85\00:20:57.64
pulling the roof
apart in order to lower,
00:20:57.65\00:21:01.07
yes right, the paralytic,
yeah, and so enter into
00:21:01.08\00:21:03.58
the feelings of
all these peoples?
00:21:03.59\00:21:05.45
The paralytic when Jesus says,
00:21:05.46\00:21:07.07
Son your sins are forgiven,
00:21:07.08\00:21:09.15
the peace that
must have come over him,
00:21:09.62\00:21:11.79
enter into the
feelings of the people.
00:21:11.80\00:21:14.12
And think of the
people who were sitting there
00:21:14.13\00:21:15.97
listening to Jesus and
all of a sudden look up
00:21:15.98\00:21:18.55
and what's going on
here, well they're disturbing
00:21:18.56\00:21:20.79
our special time
with this man you know,
00:21:20.80\00:21:23.34
and you start thinking
about the feelings of the
00:21:23.35\00:21:25.89
individuals and you
begin to identify with them.
00:21:25.90\00:21:28.43
Well I think we have
another little video clip,
00:21:29.88\00:21:32.03
don't we? Yes.
That we can go into now.
00:21:32.04\00:21:34.38
Tell us little bit
about what that's about all?
00:21:35.79\00:21:37.54
Team participation and
how the children can do
00:21:37.55\00:21:40.09
things with
their hands to make it
00:21:40.10\00:21:41.88
them alive. Okay, okay.
00:21:41.89\00:21:43.06
Well, I decided that
we do the paraphrases for
00:21:45.47\00:21:48.18
tonight since we
all seem to like that.
00:21:48.19\00:21:50.92
We did. And
dad's very good at it.
00:21:50.93\00:21:54.63
Paraphrases of the
Bible. Yes, and so,
00:21:54.64\00:21:58.42
I'm going to start
off and either of you can
00:21:58.99\00:22:00.95
answer whatever you
and whenever you want.
00:22:00.96\00:22:02.90
Okay, this is your first one.
00:22:03.56\00:22:05.60
Permit your baby blues
zero tighten ups and your
00:22:06.15\00:22:09.68
peeper blinkers no snoozing.
00:22:09.69\00:22:12.02
Permit your baby blues
and your blinker peepers
00:22:13.89\00:22:18.75
from snoozing?
Something about slumber.
00:22:18.76\00:22:22.00
Eyes. Keep your
eyes from sleeping?
00:22:22.84\00:22:26.36
Yeah, some eye.
I haven't a clue.
00:22:26.37\00:22:29.11
Alright, what is it?
Allow no sleep to your eyes,
00:22:29.12\00:22:34.06
no slumber and no
slumber to your eyelids.
00:22:34.07\00:22:37.03
Where in the
world do you find that?
00:22:37.04\00:22:39.19
Where is that?
Yeah, it's in Proverb 6:4.
00:22:39.20\00:22:42.26
Proverb 6:4. I
don't remember reading
00:22:42.27\00:22:45.23
anything about eyelids.
00:22:45.24\00:22:46.69
How many colors do
you think Joseph had
00:22:48.73\00:22:50.44
in his coat? A lot. He
had lot the Bible said;
00:22:50.45\00:22:55.16
it was a coat of
many colors, didn't he?
00:22:55.17\00:22:57.42
Oh! Lorraine,
this is really good.
00:23:09.01\00:23:10.59
Tell me about
your picture of Joseph?
00:23:10.60\00:23:12.48
He is so happy. He
is looking in his coat,
00:23:13.57\00:23:15.95
and he is looking at
himself, thank you Father.
00:23:15.96\00:23:19.90
Do you think that he is
saying thank you Father?
00:23:19.91\00:23:22.40
Well he was appreciative
of his coat, wasn't he?
00:23:22.41\00:23:26.98
And look it's
bright and cheerful.
00:23:27.82\00:23:29.49
Now I see that
you drew some sheep.
00:23:29.50\00:23:31.41
Why did you draw
sheep on your picture?
00:23:32.43\00:23:34.17
Okay, there is a lot
of sheep where he lives
00:23:34.18\00:23:37.77
because he was a
Shepherd. He was a shepherd?
00:23:37.78\00:23:40.47
So there were sheep
and at his home and out
00:23:41.11\00:23:44.25
in the field; Molly
let me see your picture.
00:23:44.26\00:23:48.19
Look at this? Wow!
I'm really impressed.
00:23:48.20\00:23:53.06
Tell me about Joseph
and his coat of many colors?
00:23:53.07\00:23:56.06
He was happy and he
had a big coat that had
00:23:56.80\00:24:03.33
a lot of colors. Do
you think he told his
00:24:03.34\00:24:07.59
dad thank you?
Yes. Oh! Yeah, I bet.
00:24:07.60\00:24:10.63
He gave him a
big kiss for making
00:24:10.64\00:24:13.16
that coat of many colors.
00:24:13.17\00:24:15.00
Every time I see that
clip it touches my heart.
00:24:16.68\00:24:20.01
This was the single
parent family that you can
00:24:20.02\00:24:22.70
see that the beautiful
relationship there with
00:24:22.71\00:24:26.50
the children. Oh! Yes,
you know we don't have a
00:24:26.51\00:24:28.61
lot of time left
Millie, but I want just to go
00:24:28.62\00:24:30.72
into a little bit
about memorizing Bible texts?
00:24:30.73\00:24:33.76
I always have difficulty
memorizing a Bible text
00:24:34.37\00:24:37.92
and the older I get its worse.
00:24:37.93\00:24:39.22
But we found a way
that it's easy even for me,
00:24:39.23\00:24:43.25
but I'm going to
practice on John.
00:24:43.70\00:24:45.60
We're going to have
him repeat to first John.
00:24:45.61\00:24:50.23
I have first chapter
verse 9 and what we do
00:24:52.21\00:24:56.02
we start with giving
the first two words of the
00:24:56.03\00:24:59.61
verse and so, I will
give John the first two
00:24:59.62\00:25:03.72
words which are if we
and then for each word we
00:25:03.73\00:25:08.51
have the first
letter, so lets see how well
00:25:08.52\00:25:11.22
John does, okay?
Okay. John I give you the
00:25:11.23\00:25:15.53
first words; if we the
second word starts with
00:25:15.54\00:25:18.53
the C. Confess. O.
Our. S. Sins. H. He. I. Is.
00:25:18.54\00:25:25.61
F. Faithful. A.
And. T, J. Just. T. To.
00:25:25.62\00:25:31.51
F. Forgive. U.
Us. O. Our. S. Sins.
00:25:31.52\00:25:35.16
Okay, that's a good
way and it's a fun way we
00:25:35.17\00:25:38.92
went to a home one
day, the children were all
00:25:38.93\00:25:41.42
laughing and we
asked what's going on?
00:25:41.43\00:25:44.38
They said we are
memorizing, alright,
00:25:44.39\00:25:46.43
and when they started
memorizing they started
00:25:46.44\00:25:48.23
laughing. Oh! Here is
a way that Oh! Go ahead.
00:25:48.24\00:25:50.17
But I was going to say
music is another way of
00:25:50.18\00:25:54.09
learning the text.
Right, that's what I was gonna
00:25:54.10\00:25:55.95
say that the way that
we did it was not so much
00:25:55.96\00:25:59.38
that, but putting
it to music and it's,
00:25:59.39\00:26:02.34
if we confess our sins
He is faithful and just to
00:26:02.35\00:26:10.86
forgive us our sins and
cleanse us and cleanse us
00:26:10.87\00:26:17.26
from all unrighteousness.
00:26:17.27\00:26:20.40
And it's First John 1 Verse 9,
00:26:20.41\00:26:23.57
so that's the way
we learned a lot of
00:26:23.58\00:26:25.68
scriptures song.
Really, a very good way.
00:26:25.69\00:26:27.93
And there is another
illustration you have,
00:26:27.94\00:26:29.94
isn't there about
demoniac or getting into a
00:26:29.95\00:26:32.60
Bible story. Yeah,
you were there and what
00:26:32.61\00:26:35.08
do you see? Let's
think about the demoniac,
00:26:35.09\00:26:38.62
John. Do we have time
for it very much is that?
00:26:38.63\00:26:41.90
I will just say a word. Okay.
00:26:41.91\00:26:43.36
So, you've come across
the lake at night terrible
00:26:43.37\00:26:46.08
storm, Peter gets out and said,
00:26:46.09\00:26:47.65
I never want to put my
foot in the boat again.
00:26:47.66\00:26:50.14
All of a sudden
these demoniacs come out of
00:26:50.15\00:26:52.12
the mountains and you
see Peter running back down
00:26:52.13\00:26:55.05
on the boat jumping
and come on guys these mad
00:26:55.06\00:26:58.00
man are after us,
so you were there and
00:26:58.01\00:27:00.87
you play this, somebody
plays the part of Peters,
00:27:00.88\00:27:03.33
somebody plays
the part of the Peter,
00:27:03.34\00:27:05.32
somebody plays the
part of the wife of the
00:27:05.33\00:27:08.51
demoniac when they
came home that night.
00:27:08.52\00:27:10.40
Right, Oh! Well,
and now that's a way
00:27:10.41\00:27:12.70
to really get
into, into it, isn't it?
00:27:12.71\00:27:14.52
And it's exciting.
Well, our time is already gone
00:27:14.53\00:27:17.98
and it went fast, isn't it?
00:27:17.99\00:27:19.45
And I enjoyed the
clips that you had,
00:27:19.90\00:27:21.45
I want to invite you
back and I want to invite
00:27:21.46\00:27:23.85
our viewers back with
us. And we're going to
00:27:23.86\00:27:27.64
have prayer for you
and you pray for us while
00:27:27.65\00:27:29.63
we're praying for you.
00:27:29.64\00:27:30.61
John, will you pray for us?
00:27:31.27\00:27:32.31
Heavenly Father,
we are so thankful
00:27:32.82\00:27:34.53
for our families.
We're thankful for
00:27:34.54\00:27:36.59
our boys and girls for
our husbands and wives,
00:27:36.60\00:27:39.47
and we're thankful
that we can kneel together
00:27:39.48\00:27:41.82
and praise Your Holy
name and adore You because
00:27:41.83\00:27:44.72
You are there that we
can claim them merits of
00:27:44.73\00:27:47.25
the sacrifice of Jesus
to save our family that we
00:27:47.26\00:27:49.95
can make a pact
of covenant together
00:27:49.96\00:27:52.36
that we can get ready
for the kingdom because
00:27:52.37\00:27:55.31
Jesus is coming very
soon. Dear Lord acceot our
00:27:55.32\00:27:58.86
family not
because we're graving.
00:27:58.87\00:28:00.99
