Hello, I'm Kathy Matthews and this is Thinking About Home. 00:00:31.35\00:00:35.07 And I'm glad you've joined us again. 00:00:35.08\00:00:37.26 You know there's been so many times that I thought 00:00:37.27\00:00:39.25 that I would love to have my family on here. 00:00:39.26\00:00:41.63 And today I have the privilege of having Sarah, 00:00:41.64\00:00:43.69 our oldest daughter on with us. 00:00:43.70\00:00:45.43 Sarah, thank you for being here. 00:00:45.44\00:00:47.11 Thank you for letting me, mom. 00:00:47.12\00:00:49.76 We have been talking about study skills, 00:00:49.77\00:00:53.06 because you're in college now. 00:00:53.07\00:00:54.62 And Sarah is a student at Weimar College in California. 00:00:54.63\00:00:57.80 And the other day we were discussing the importance 00:00:57.81\00:01:01.38 of her making it though the work study, 00:01:01.39\00:01:04.59 and the hectic schedule that she has in class time 00:01:04.60\00:01:09.48 and the units that she's taking 00:01:09.49\00:01:10.79 and its been pretty overpowering 00:01:10.80\00:01:12.50 and... There's been times that we wondered 00:01:12.51\00:01:14.69 how in the world she's done it. 00:01:14.70\00:01:15.85 So, we thought that it would be very important 00:01:15.86\00:01:19.08 that others may be able to learn 00:01:19.09\00:01:21.06 some of the things that she's learned. 00:01:21.07\00:01:22.36 So she's gonna show us and help us to understand 00:01:22.37\00:01:25.83 some of the student study skills that she's developed. 00:01:25.84\00:01:28.91 And I think that you find them a blessing to you 00:01:28.92\00:01:31.77 if you're a student and maybe in your home, 00:01:31.78\00:01:35.05 if you're a younger student as well, 00:01:35.06\00:01:36.65 you might be able to apply some of these things. 00:01:36.66\00:01:38.50 But for the college student especially. 00:01:38.51\00:01:40.18 Yes, college or even boarding academy. 00:01:40.19\00:01:43.60 Particularly in a boarding environment, 00:01:43.61\00:01:46.81 because it contains so many other factors 00:01:46.82\00:01:50.91 than if you're just going to school during the daytime 00:01:50.92\00:01:52.71 and coming home to, you know, of relaxing home environment 00:01:52.72\00:01:56.85 or whatever your normal home duties are. 00:01:56.86\00:01:58.81 When you're at a boarding environment 00:01:58.82\00:02:00.21 you have so many other responsibilities, 00:02:00.22\00:02:02.97 so many other things you have go to 00:02:02.98\00:02:04.39 and people around all the time. 00:02:04.40\00:02:05.98 It's not just, you know where you can recluse home 00:02:05.99\00:02:10.72 to just your family in your own room 00:02:10.73\00:02:13.18 and without other bunch of other people around 00:02:13.19\00:02:14.97 always demanding your attention. Right. 00:02:14.98\00:02:16.76 did you, did you learn some of these skills 00:02:16.77\00:02:18.64 at home? Did you extend it out into the.. 00:02:18.65\00:02:21.99 Yes, yes, all these principles that I've learned, 00:02:22.00\00:02:24.49 that I put down on paper or on graphics for this program. 00:02:24.50\00:02:30.31 I got the foundations for them at home, 00:02:30.32\00:02:31.93 the foundation of the principles, 00:02:31.94\00:02:33.28 the ideas, the basic reasons why. 00:02:33.29\00:02:38.08 And but I didn't fully develop them 00:02:38.09\00:02:40.37 and put them into my own, my own life 00:02:40.38\00:02:44.30 until I went away to boarding academy. 00:02:44.31\00:02:46.08 And that was where I start feeling out the differences 00:02:46.09\00:02:50.84 and trying to drive myself to become a person 00:02:50.85\00:02:55.35 with good study habits, 00:02:55.36\00:02:56.67 a person that could get everything done 00:02:56.68\00:02:57.91 that I needed to get done. 00:02:57.92\00:02:58.97 At least when it was humanly possible. 00:02:58.98\00:03:01.18 And then I noticed that in my own life 00:03:01.19\00:03:03.04 that they've really become very personal 00:03:03.05\00:03:06.24 to me in college, 00:03:06.25\00:03:07.64 because college is very different from academy. 00:03:07.65\00:03:11.00 In some ways you have more time and in some ways 00:03:11.01\00:03:13.03 it seems you're so much more busy. Right. 00:03:13.04\00:03:15.28 And it just depends on which factors are playing there, 00:03:15.29\00:03:20.63 and I know, I know I have, I have a heavier academic load 00:03:20.64\00:03:23.78 in college than I did in academy. Right. 00:03:23.79\00:03:26.03 And there's been times when I've had other people 00:03:26.04\00:03:27.67 come and ask me, how do you keep up 00:03:27.68\00:03:29.96 with the academic load that you're taking.Yes. 00:03:29.97\00:03:32.17 And still work half time, 20 hours a week or more, 00:03:32.18\00:03:36.12 and still get all your other responsibilities done. 00:03:36.13\00:03:37.79 And not start failing your classes 00:03:37.80\00:03:40.49 and not start just pointing average grades because, 00:03:40.50\00:03:44.78 although some people do say, 00:03:44.79\00:03:46.18 you know people say that grades 00:03:46.19\00:03:48.49 are only the teacher's opinion and they don't really reflect 00:03:48.50\00:03:51.98 the students' performance and everything. 00:03:51.99\00:03:53.36 The grades aren't important to me, 00:03:53.37\00:03:54.80 because when someone is evaluating my performance 00:03:54.81\00:03:57.46 in an academic environment, 00:03:57.47\00:03:58.76 that's what they're going to look at. Right. 00:03:58.77\00:04:00.83 And they're not going to look at well, 00:04:00.84\00:04:01.98 how was the student feeling when he took this test. Right. 00:04:01.99\00:04:04.97 They're going to say this is how this student did. 00:04:04.98\00:04:08.36 And this was the basic trend of the student's academics. 00:04:08.37\00:04:10.84 Right, unfortunately that's what we have to go by, 00:04:10.85\00:04:12.77 since that's the kind of world we're in. 00:04:12.78\00:04:14.49 Right, in other countries, 00:04:14.50\00:04:15.99 under a different academic standard, 00:04:16.03\00:04:17.52 different levels of different forms of teaching, 00:04:17.53\00:04:20.25 it maybe different. But at least from America 00:04:20.26\00:04:22.15 and most of the first world Europe and so on. 00:04:22.16\00:04:25.32 Grades are very important, in a, 00:04:25.33\00:04:28.33 particularly a college environment. 00:04:28.34\00:04:30.45 And we've been talking on some programs about 00:04:30.46\00:04:33.93 the motivation of learning and the best way 00:04:33.94\00:04:36.77 is the natural way and one of the areas 00:04:36.78\00:04:39.39 that we had discovered is it's sometimes when we learn, 00:04:39.40\00:04:44.23 we learn best when it has been fun, when it's been, 00:04:44.24\00:04:47.56 the emotion has been involved and has been enjoyable. 00:04:47.57\00:04:49.70 That's true, that's true. 00:04:49.71\00:04:51.75 But when you get down to the nitty-gritty 00:04:51.76\00:04:53.35 also and you can't, because we're not in a perfect world 00:04:53.36\00:04:56.32 where it's always enjoyable and you get right down 00:04:56.33\00:04:58.71 to the difficulties of determination. 00:04:58.72\00:05:02.37 Then you have to learn some skills and in studying. 00:05:02.38\00:05:07.90 It comes down to self discipline. Yes. 00:05:07.91\00:05:09.90 You know that making learning fun is important 00:05:09.91\00:05:13.09 especially with younger children, 00:05:13.10\00:05:15.39 when they're learning the importance of learning, 00:05:15.40\00:05:17.82 when they're first discovery that education is important. 00:05:17.83\00:05:21.50 And it is essential to make it something that is enjoyable, 00:05:21.51\00:05:26.13 but as you get older, as you start finishing high school 00:05:26.14\00:05:29.64 and even maybe for some people depending on your school, 00:05:29.65\00:05:32.05 earlier than the late high school years. 00:05:32.06\00:05:34.73 But particularly in a college environment, 00:05:34.74\00:05:36.69 learning is not always fun, 00:05:36.70\00:05:38.47 a lot of times it's a lot of hard work, 00:05:38.48\00:05:40.29 there will be subjects you hate, 00:05:40.30\00:05:41.78 there will be homework that you do not want to do. 00:05:41.79\00:05:44.41 And there will be times when you have to study 00:05:44.42\00:05:46.21 for hours to grasp a concept that does not 00:05:46.22\00:05:48.42 make sense to you, and it's not fun, 00:05:48.43\00:05:50.50 but you have to do it. 00:05:50.51\00:05:51.56 Because that's what is going to make 00:05:51.57\00:05:55.33 or break your education. 00:05:55.34\00:05:56.33 You only have to do it if you want 00:05:56.34\00:05:57.77 your grades to stay up there. 00:05:57.78\00:06:00.42 Well, yes, but this is assuming, that you.. 00:06:00.43\00:06:03.32 Yes, that you wanna do your best. 00:06:03.33\00:06:04.59 Desiring to do your best to get decent grades 00:06:04.60\00:06:07.69 and I'm not saying that everyone needs to get A 00:06:07.70\00:06:09.74 to do their best, but or that an A is everyone's best. 00:06:09.75\00:06:13.84 But in order to do your best whatever that is for you, 00:06:13.85\00:06:16.24 you need to be looking at what will, 00:06:16.25\00:06:21.43 what factors will help you 00:06:21.44\00:06:23.79 become a well balanced, happy, 00:06:23.80\00:06:27.50 self disciplined person with good study skills. 00:06:28.46\00:06:31.00 Right. Because you can have an extremely intelligent student 00:06:31.01\00:06:35.54 that has terrible study skills 00:06:35.55\00:06:37.95 that will flunk an easy class. 00:06:37.96\00:06:40.08 And you could and not so bright student 00:06:40.09\00:06:42.18 that may even be academically challenged. 00:06:42.19\00:06:44.44 May have a learning disorder, 00:06:44.45\00:06:45.79 but if they know how to study, 00:06:45.80\00:06:47.57 and they know how to apply themselves, 00:06:47.58\00:06:49.37 they know what little things that so many others 00:06:49.38\00:06:52.64 leave overlooked. Yes. 00:06:52.65\00:06:54.60 They can make a better grade than the brilliant student 00:06:54.61\00:06:57.78 that doesn't apply themselves. Right. 00:06:57.79\00:06:59.15 So a lot of it is just looking for tiny things 00:06:59.16\00:07:01.73 that make a big difference. 00:07:01.74\00:07:02.82 Okay, so let's begin. All right. 00:07:02.83\00:07:04.44 What is it that you want to stat with? 00:07:04.45\00:07:05.52 What do you think is this thing, 00:07:05.53\00:07:06.99 the very first important thing, 00:07:07.00\00:07:10.26 principle which you would like to share with us. 00:07:10.27\00:07:11.96 But before we start that, I'd just like to suggest 00:07:11.97\00:07:14.01 to the audience that if you, 00:07:14.02\00:07:16.22 if you're a parent that would like to share this 00:07:16.23\00:07:18.34 with your children or your college student, 00:07:18.35\00:07:20.93 academy student, and you wanna get a pen 00:07:20.94\00:07:22.77 and a piece of paper to write these down, 00:07:22.78\00:07:24.23 we're gonna have some basic, very basic principles 00:07:24.24\00:07:28.23 that are gonna be coming up on the screen 00:07:28.24\00:07:29.61 that will help you, if you wanna write these down, 00:07:29.62\00:07:32.22 make a list, see if you can apply 00:07:32.23\00:07:33.87 any of these into your own life, 00:07:33.88\00:07:35.08 maybe you've overlooked one of these. 00:07:35.09\00:07:36.53 Maybe you've already applied them 00:07:36.54\00:07:38.79 and you just wanna list them for yourself. 00:07:38.80\00:07:40.68 If you wanna do that, 00:07:40.69\00:07:42.20 something that applies to our first, 00:07:42.21\00:07:44.08 our first principle is a text in Psalms 5 verse 3. 00:07:44.09\00:07:47.88 And I really like to share that you today. 00:07:47.89\00:07:52.08 Psalms 5 verse 3 says, 00:07:52.09\00:07:53.40 " My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, 00:07:53.41\00:07:55.23 O LORD, in the morning will I direct my prayer 00:07:55.24\00:07:58.22 unto thee, and will look up." Amen. 00:07:58.23\00:08:01.61 Now I think that this must being something 00:08:01.62\00:08:03.62 it's important about the morning. 00:08:03.63\00:08:04.89 I think so. I think, and if you know 00:08:04.90\00:08:07.46 is we also have an example of Jesus 00:08:07.47\00:08:09.08 rising early in the day. 00:08:09.09\00:08:11.58 He just always spend time with his Father in prayer 00:08:11.59\00:08:13.89 and in study. Particularly out in nature, 00:08:13.90\00:08:16.31 but it was always early in the morning, it's mentioned. 00:08:16.32\00:08:19.62 And I think that it's important to get up early. 00:08:19.63\00:08:23.20 And I know that a lot of people are cultured, 00:08:23.21\00:08:26.42 conditioned, not to be morning people. 00:08:26.43\00:08:28.52 Some people are more naturally morning people, 00:08:28.53\00:08:30.73 and you have to figure that out for yourself. 00:08:30.74\00:08:33.00 But within reason I think it's important to rise early 00:08:33.01\00:08:37.16 and never to sacrifice your personal time with God, 00:08:37.17\00:08:39.80 because this sets the tone for your entire day. 00:08:39.81\00:08:42.40 So this is one of the points, get up early. 00:08:42.41\00:08:44.73 This is the first point, get up early 00:08:44.74\00:08:46.48 and never sacrifice your personal time with God. 00:08:46.49\00:08:49.79 Now this ties right into our second principle. Okay. 00:08:49.80\00:08:52.79 And that is always eat breakfast and lunch. 00:08:52.80\00:08:56.62 Always? As best you can. 00:08:56.63\00:08:59.41 As best as possible. I try to make it a habit. 00:08:59.42\00:09:01.49 I will admit that there's times when I even don't get 00:09:01.50\00:09:03.74 all the meals I need too. 00:09:03.75\00:09:05.50 But nutrition affects your learning habits, 00:09:05.51\00:09:08.72 these you need to eat well and have good balanced meals, 00:09:08.73\00:09:11.96 because if your brain is not well fed 00:09:11.97\00:09:15.93 it cannot function properly. Right. 00:09:15.94\00:09:18.64 Now there's always the illustration 00:09:18.65\00:09:22.30 I like to use this, with you don't anywhere in your car 00:09:22.31\00:09:27.85 with an empty gas tank. 00:09:27.86\00:09:29.91 Before you go on a trip, before you start the day 00:09:29.92\00:09:32.46 you know that you need to have gas in your car. 00:09:32.47\00:09:34.54 That will be a preparation. 00:09:34.55\00:09:35.99 And, yes the preparation, but my point is in order 00:09:36.00\00:09:39.93 to have a clear thinking brain for the day, 00:09:39.94\00:09:42.67 you need to have it fed in the morning. 00:09:42.68\00:09:45.67 And when I emphasize breakfast and lunch 00:09:45.68\00:09:49.73 it's for a reason, I'll get on to that 00:09:50.28\00:09:53.07 later as far as particularly those two meals. Right. 00:09:53.08\00:09:57.43 But breakfast is very important and if you're 00:09:57.44\00:10:00.82 getting up early you will want to eat breakfast. Right. 00:10:00.83\00:10:03.52 Because if you get up really early and you wait 00:10:03.53\00:10:05.58 all the way till the middle of the day for lunch 00:10:05.59\00:10:07.25 you're gonna be starving and your brain 00:10:07.26\00:10:08.60 is not gonna be functioning right, 00:10:08.61\00:10:10.30 because you're gonna be thinking food, 00:10:10.31\00:10:11.86 food, where is the food? Food, food. 00:10:11.87\00:10:13.55 And you know I got to eat. 00:10:13.56\00:10:14.66 Well, you know that's physical food, 00:10:14.67\00:10:15.68 but did you put in there anything about the spiritual? 00:10:15.69\00:10:18.01 Well, yes, our first principle was get up early 00:10:18.02\00:10:19.85 to have your personal time with God. 00:10:19.86\00:10:21.26 Right, so left with that purpose. 00:10:21.27\00:10:22.54 So and then but, you know, 00:10:22.55\00:10:23.68 after you fed your spiritual life 00:10:23.69\00:10:26.10 you also need to feed your physical body. Right. 00:10:26.11\00:10:28.56 Now, our third principle is to use your 00:10:28.57\00:10:31.58 spare time efficiently. Now most people think nothing, 00:10:31.59\00:10:37.51 this is what I've observed, especially those young adults 00:10:37.52\00:10:40.81 in a college environment think nothing 00:10:40.82\00:10:42.63 of wasting five minutes. Right. 00:10:42.64\00:10:44.15 It's just five minutes, 00:10:44.16\00:10:45.39 I can't sit down and write a paper. 00:10:45.40\00:10:46.80 I can't concentrate long enough to get homework done, 00:10:46.81\00:10:48.80 and that's true. I don't know anyone that can sit down 00:10:48.81\00:10:52.27 on a partially written paper and actually add 00:10:52.28\00:10:54.86 something worth while to it, that they're gonna wanna 00:10:54.87\00:10:57.02 keep when they go back and edit it in five minutes. Right. 00:10:57.03\00:11:01.05 I can't do that. Not too many that focussed. 00:11:01.06\00:11:02.82 Well, it's hard to get your thoughts rolling 00:11:02.83\00:11:06.14 and to pull everything together 00:11:06.15\00:11:08.54 and start thinking coherently as far as that is concerned 00:11:08.55\00:11:13.01 within just five minutes or six or eight or ten. 00:11:13.02\00:11:15.74 But you think five minutes makes a difference. 00:11:15.75\00:11:17.68 But five minutes will make a big difference 00:11:17.69\00:11:19.73 if you learn to use it to get the other things done 00:11:19.74\00:11:23.06 that will keep you from writing that paper later 00:11:23.07\00:11:25.00 when you have a chunk of time. What are the other things? 00:11:25.01\00:11:27.53 Now you can have in a college environment, 00:11:27.54\00:11:29.61 you can have laundry, you can have room, 00:11:29.62\00:11:33.68 your room needs to be picked up, cleaned up. 00:11:33.69\00:11:36.26 Make you bad, tidy things, 00:11:36.27\00:11:39.71 fold your clothes. 00:11:39.72\00:11:40.77 You know, There are a million little tiny things. 00:11:41.97\00:11:46.75 You know, organize, make a list for the day. 00:11:46.76\00:11:49.61 You know jot down your thoughts about something else, 00:11:49.62\00:11:52.44 memorize a Bible verse, something. 00:11:52.45\00:11:54.97 There is any, there is any number of things 00:11:54.98\00:11:57.66 that you can do in five minutes and it's amazing 00:11:57.67\00:12:01.20 if you concentrate how much you can accomplish 00:12:01.21\00:12:04.02 in just five minutes. 00:12:04.03\00:12:05.60 So the idea is don't waste time, right. 00:12:05.61\00:12:08.13 Exactly, exactly do not waste 00:12:08.14\00:12:10.38 even the small amounts of time. 00:12:10.39\00:12:12.11 Even the ones that don't occur you to be important. 00:12:12.12\00:12:14.75 King Solomon is called the wisest man in the world, 00:12:14.76\00:12:19.74 in world's history I suppose. 00:12:19.75\00:12:21.46 And he has said in Proverbs 6:6, Go to the ant, 00:12:21.47\00:12:24.79 thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:" 00:12:24.80\00:12:27.49 And he goes on in the following few verses to talk 00:12:27.50\00:12:29.29 about how they don't have a ruler, 00:12:29.30\00:12:31.20 they don't have an overseer, 00:12:31.21\00:12:32.38 now that's that is the picture of a college student. 00:12:32.39\00:12:35.92 Especially a boarding student, you know there's authorities, 00:12:35.93\00:12:38.64 there's deans and so on. Right. 00:12:38.65\00:12:39.84 But you don't have your parents right there saying, 00:12:39.85\00:12:41.69 now you need to go and do this, 00:12:41.70\00:12:43.44 and now you need to go and do that. 00:12:43.45\00:12:45.07 Come on, Johnny, let's go do this. 00:12:45.08\00:12:46.78 I should have been learned long before. 00:12:46.79\00:12:48.76 Exactly, so this is why you want to apply 00:12:48.77\00:12:51.29 this into your own life now. Right. 00:12:51.30\00:12:53.91 Okay, the fourth principle, study your teacher. 00:12:53.92\00:12:59.14 Why is that so important do you think? 00:12:59.15\00:13:01.42 Because so many students 00:13:01.43\00:13:03.79 don't realize how much difference it can make 00:13:03.80\00:13:08.20 if you learn to see the subtle differences 00:13:08.21\00:13:14.02 in different teachers, methods of getting 00:13:14.03\00:13:16.75 their information across. 00:13:16.76\00:13:18.74 Now there is different ways that different teachers 00:13:18.75\00:13:22.73 stress different things, there is different ways 00:13:22.74\00:13:24.69 different teachers give assignments. 00:13:24.70\00:13:26.47 Different teachers grade on different things. 00:13:26.48\00:13:28.91 Example, okay, I've had teachers that grade 00:13:28.92\00:13:33.25 on class participation, they grade on your behavior 00:13:33.26\00:13:37.34 in class as well as your assignments 00:13:37.35\00:13:40.17 and your discussion and so on. 00:13:40.18\00:13:42.81 And I know one teacher that if there is she keeps 00:13:42.82\00:13:47.09 an extremely orderly classroom. 00:13:47.10\00:13:50.60 Now a lot of times college classrooms 00:13:50.61\00:13:52.28 are not extremely orderly. Right. 00:13:52.29\00:13:54.05 Because this is no longer elementary school 00:13:54.06\00:13:56.07 where they turn out the lights when you're being too noisy 00:13:56.08\00:13:58.08 or whatever, the teacher stands 00:13:58.09\00:13:59.48 and looks simply serious to try to get your attention. 00:13:59.49\00:14:01.86 So, but this teacher, all the students in her classes 00:14:01.87\00:14:07.03 know, you don't talk, you don't whisper, 00:14:07.04\00:14:09.60 you don't ask unnecessary questions, 00:14:09.61\00:14:11.52 you don't pass notes. 00:14:11.53\00:14:12.69 This is a sit down, pay attention to the teacher, 00:14:12.70\00:14:15.46 listen to her lecture kind of class. 00:14:15.47\00:14:17.74 Now on the other hand, I know another teacher 00:14:17.75\00:14:20.03 who doesn't, who grades only on assignments 00:14:20.04\00:14:23.79 and you can talk, do other homework. 00:14:23.80\00:14:29.14 Maybe talking to your neighbor or whatever, 00:14:29.15\00:14:31.43 and it does not really matter to her as much as 00:14:31.44\00:14:34.06 it does to the other teacher. 00:14:34.07\00:14:35.29 Of course you don't want to be unruly, 00:14:35.30\00:14:37.25 but if you get your assignments turned in 00:14:37.26\00:14:38.61 that's what your class grade is based on. 00:14:38.62\00:14:40.53 Learning these subtle differences 00:14:40.54\00:14:42.20 or not so subtle differences can make the difference 00:14:42.21\00:14:44.65 between an A and C. 00:14:44.66\00:14:46.48 Now there's also different ways that different teachers 00:14:46.49\00:14:51.19 stress in their lectures what is important. 00:14:51.20\00:14:53.78 And I can't really, I don't believe that 00:14:53.79\00:14:56.36 I can explain how to tell except that 00:14:56.37\00:15:00.29 you have to learn to feel how? 00:15:00.30\00:15:03.29 To just to sense when the teacher is expressing 00:15:03.30\00:15:05.55 something that they think is important. 00:15:05.56\00:15:06.80 Like what? What do you mean? 00:15:06.81\00:15:09.12 Like what would it be that they would be 00:15:09.13\00:15:10.97 stressing that anything is important. 00:15:10.98\00:15:12.97 Any concept, any particular principle, 00:15:12.98\00:15:15.91 particularly of science classes or whatever, 00:15:15.92\00:15:17.92 when teachers, when teachers, 00:15:17.93\00:15:19.49 sometime it's really easy. 00:15:19.50\00:15:21.12 If they go over and over and over it, 00:15:21.13\00:15:22.10 then this is obviously something that is going to be 00:15:22.11\00:15:24.06 something important. Going to be something of a test, 00:15:24.07\00:15:25.04 right? Right. 00:25:16.14\00:25:18.67 Any college student will agree with me 00:25:18.68\00:25:21.39 that a dorm is a loud, noisy, obnoxious place to live, 00:25:21.40\00:25:24.94 a lot of the time, not always but a lot of a time 00:25:24.95\00:25:27.62 and I know my dorm is great, 00:25:27.63\00:25:29.45 the girls in my dorm are wonderful. Right. 00:25:29.46\00:25:31.34 But there is still noise when ever you get a bunch of girls 00:25:31.35\00:25:33.92 together, or a bunch of guys and this is some time 00:25:33.93\00:25:36.54 that you can take for personal time, 00:25:36.55\00:25:38.70 or extra study time. Right, you've to move on. 00:25:38.71\00:25:40.86 Yes. Keep a very carefully, tightly balanced social life. 00:25:40.87\00:25:45.39 And I've heard people say, social life is important, 00:25:45.40\00:25:49.27 don't let your education get in the way of your learning, 00:25:49.28\00:25:51.79 make sure you have fun at college. 00:25:51.80\00:25:53.80 But, you know, I want to balance that out 00:25:53.81\00:25:55.55 with the fact that, yes, social life is important. 00:25:55.56\00:25:57.68 But college is not entertainment. 00:25:57.69\00:26:00.27 You're paying thousands of dollars a year, 00:26:00.28\00:26:02.35 or your parents are not paying thousands of dollars a year 00:26:02.36\00:26:04.87 for you to have fun, for you to entertained. 00:26:04.88\00:26:06.96 This is where you're here to get an education. 00:26:06.97\00:26:09.07 Right. You need mere fun only. 00:26:09.08\00:26:12.73 Right, but you can be entertained anywhere, 00:26:12.74\00:26:16.30 you can have fun anywhere, you can be social anywhere. 00:26:16.31\00:26:18.99 At college, you're paying to learn. Right. 00:26:19.00\00:26:21.81 And while you make friends, you have fun, 00:26:21.82\00:26:23.98 you have a social life that is not the priority. 00:26:23.99\00:26:26.24 So keep it balanced. 00:26:26.25\00:26:27.57 Priority is a balanced learning environment.
