Hello boys and girls, welcome to "Starting with Jesus." 00:00:23.99\00:00:26.55 Where we want to encourage you to start everything you do 00:00:26.59\00:00:29.86 with Jesus. 00:00:29.89\00:00:31.23 We have a story today about a young man just like you 00:00:31.26\00:00:35.73 who gave his heart to Jesus. 00:00:35.76\00:00:37.50 And a reminder that it doesn't matter how old you are 00:00:37.53\00:00:42.57 that you can be a missionary for Jesus. 00:00:42.60\00:00:47.34 So, I'm excited about that story. But before we get to that 00:00:47.38\00:00:51.05 story, let's get to some singing. 00:00:51.08\00:00:53.15 Alright guys so we come here to this kind of overlook here 00:04:09.68\00:04:13.98 and there's something really interesting about the stones. 00:04:14.02\00:04:16.28 Can you help me out and tell me how many sides this one has? 00:04:16.32\00:04:21.39 Can you count them with me? One, two, can you count? 00:04:21.42\00:04:25.29 three, four, five, six, okay. Why does it look like someone 00:04:25.33\00:04:32.77 just came up here with a concrete truck or a patio 00:04:32.80\00:04:37.04 and just made this pattern up here? 00:04:37.07\00:04:39.51 How do you think it happened? Now this is cool right? 00:04:39.54\00:04:43.91 But it's easy to walk up here and look around and then just 00:04:43.95\00:04:49.38 keep on walking, right cause you don't really think there is 00:04:49.42\00:04:52.52 much to this other than these rocks with different sides. 00:04:52.55\00:04:56.16 Well, right now we can't really tell. They all have different 00:04:56.19\00:05:00.60 shapes but if all we do is keep on walking 00:05:00.63\00:05:03.40 we're going to miss out on something really cool. 00:05:03.43\00:05:06.10 Let's go! 00:05:06.13\00:05:07.47 So guys, I know it was a little bit of a hike to get down here. 00:05:07.50\00:05:32.23 It took some time didn't it? And I always thought the top 00:05:32.26\00:05:35.23 of these rocks were interesting patterns. 00:05:35.26\00:05:37.60 I want you to look behind me and see something really amazing. 00:05:37.63\00:05:40.54 What do you see? 00:05:40.57\00:05:41.90 Is this what we saw before? 00:05:41.94\00:05:45.24 No, we just saw these little stones under our feet. 00:05:45.27\00:05:49.71 But when we walked down here we saw that those stones 00:05:49.74\00:05:52.75 are actually huge basalt columns. 00:05:52.78\00:05:56.15 It's called Devil's Post piling, why is it called Devil's 00:05:56.18\00:05:59.89 post pile? Yeah, they look like posts, they're in a pile 00:05:59.92\00:06:06.39 but what does the Devil have to do with it? 00:06:06.43\00:06:08.13 Well these were formed when lava cooled and people associate 00:06:08.16\00:06:13.27 lava with who? Satan and hell, that's why it's called 00:06:13.30\00:06:18.11 the Devil's post pile. but these columns range in... 00:06:18.14\00:06:22.94 they average about two feet wide, some of them get as wide 00:06:22.98\00:06:26.25 as three and a half feet wide. And from those little stones 00:06:26.28\00:06:32.15 that we saw under our feet some of them stretched down 00:06:32.19\00:06:35.62 about sixty feet, 60 feet, isn't that amazing? 00:06:35.66\00:06:40.76 and you wouldn't even know that these are huge columns 00:06:40.80\00:06:44.73 if all we had done was just look at the rocks 00:06:44.77\00:06:46.97 that were under our feet. 00:06:47.00\00:06:48.90 In Psalm 92:5 it says "How great are your works O Lord." 00:06:48.94\00:06:55.08 Your thoughts are very deep. You see, there are some things 00:06:55.11\00:06:59.38 that we will never find out about God unless we search 00:06:59.41\00:07:02.92 beneath the surface of the Bible. 00:07:02.98\00:07:05.89 Boys and girls if we will take time to read and study the Bible 00:07:05.92\00:07:10.53 we will discover things that we didn't even know were there. 00:07:10.56\00:07:14.06 do you want to discover something new? 00:07:14.10\00:07:16.13 Start reading your Bible every day. 00:07:16.16\00:07:18.80 ¤¤ 00:07:18.83\00:07:23.20 Hmmm! Okay, I need to add that and this, what date was that? 00:07:23.24\00:07:30.31 Oh! Hey everybody, I was just updating my resume. 00:07:30.35\00:07:35.72 Have you heard of a resume before? 00:07:35.75\00:07:37.19 A resume is a list of things that you have accomplished 00:07:37.22\00:07:42.59 in your life, it's also a list of your qualifications. 00:07:42.62\00:07:45.49 Maybe where you went to school or what jobs that you've had 00:07:45.53\00:07:49.60 or what your skills are, or what special trainings 00:07:49.63\00:07:51.93 that you've had and when you are looking for a job 00:07:51.97\00:07:53.90 then you give your resume to someone... 00:07:53.94\00:07:56.40 you print it off and you give it to someone and they decide 00:07:56.44\00:07:59.44 if you're the right person for the job. 00:07:59.47\00:08:01.34 Well today we're going to talk about someone who didn't have 00:08:01.38\00:08:05.31 a crazy resume, but God still used him for a very special job. 00:08:05.35\00:08:11.39 Let's pray. 00:08:11.42\00:08:12.75 Dear Heavenly Father, We thank you and we praise you 00:08:12.79\00:08:14.72 for loving us and for being our God. 00:08:14.76\00:08:17.19 Please send your Holy Spirit to be with us now. 00:08:17.23\00:08:19.73 Thank you so much that your angels are watching over and 00:08:19.76\00:08:22.40 protecting us and that you are always with us. 00:08:22.43\00:08:24.33 Help us to learn something new about you today. 00:08:24.37\00:08:27.04 In Your name we pray Amen! 00:08:27.07\00:08:28.60 Today's story is called Timothy the Young Missionary. 00:08:28.64\00:08:32.87 Now, when you're a young person maybe just out of college or 00:08:32.91\00:08:36.81 even in high-school, would you have a very long resume? 00:08:36.85\00:08:40.02 No! No you wouldn't. It would be very short 00:08:40.05\00:08:43.99 and that's to be expected but you'll want to do things 00:08:44.02\00:08:46.79 and have different jobs and different experiences 00:08:46.82\00:08:49.32 that will spruce up or make your resume longer and 00:08:49.36\00:08:52.46 more impressive so that you could get a job, right? 00:08:52.49\00:08:54.10 Well, here are some of the things that were on 00:08:54.13\00:08:56.16 Timothy's resume, are you ready? 00:08:56.20\00:08:59.03 He grew up in Lystra, you put your address on the resume. 00:08:59.07\00:09:02.07 His dad was Greek and his mom was Jewish. 00:09:02.10\00:09:04.91 You probably don't put stuff about your parents on your 00:09:04.94\00:09:06.91 resume, but that was his background. 00:09:06.94\00:09:08.48 His mom's name is Eunice and then he also had a 00:09:08.51\00:09:11.21 Grandma Lois. He loved God. You want to put that on your 00:09:11.25\00:09:15.72 resume right? If you were applying to be a missionary. 00:09:15.75\00:09:18.65 And he worshiped on the Sabbath. That would be another thing 00:09:18.69\00:09:22.39 maybe he even helped out in his church... 00:09:22.42\00:09:24.13 Those would be good things to put on your resume 00:09:24.16\00:09:25.66 if you were going to be a missionary, right? 00:09:25.69\00:09:27.33 But he didn't know Jesus yet. So he couldn't put Christian 00:09:27.36\00:09:31.57 on his resume because he didn't know about Jesus yet. 00:09:31.60\00:09:34.47 And he could but I don't participate in Heathen 00:09:34.50\00:09:39.87 Festivals, that was an important part of his resume right? 00:09:39.91\00:09:41.61 What do you think, would you hire Timothy to be a missionary? 00:09:41.64\00:09:44.91 Hmm. Well, it didn't go so well for Mark at first 00:09:44.95\00:09:48.18 but then after a second try he did better. 00:09:48.22\00:09:49.98 Let's find out what happens to Timothy, they want to be 00:09:50.02\00:09:53.99 missionary? Paul and Barnaba's visited Timothy's town 00:09:54.02\00:09:58.93 of Lystra, you may remember of some of the things 00:09:58.96\00:10:02.16 from a previous story that I've told you. 00:10:02.20\00:10:04.53 And they shared with Timothy and his grandma Lois 00:10:04.57\00:10:08.80 and his mom Eunice about Jesus. Now they had already talked 00:10:08.84\00:10:12.37 to Timothy about the Old Testament and to believe and 00:10:12.41\00:10:14.61 to love God but they now knew about Jesus. 00:10:14.64\00:10:20.35 Timothy admired Paul and Barnaba's and maybe he even 00:10:20.38\00:10:23.95 saw them heal that crippled man who had palsy, do you remember 00:10:23.99\00:10:27.16 that? They probably watched the heathen people call them 00:10:27.19\00:10:30.63 gods and try to make sacrifices to them. 00:10:30.66\00:10:33.86 Do you remember that part? Oh my. And he probably saw them 00:10:33.90\00:10:41.07 try to stone Paul to kill him. Did Paul die then, 00:10:41.10\00:10:44.87 do you remember the story? It looks like he was dead but 00:10:44.91\00:10:47.71 he wasn't and Timothy after witnessing all these things 00:10:47.74\00:10:51.71 still was starting to think about being a missionary 00:10:51.75\00:10:55.08 himself. Would those sort of things make you want to be a 00:10:55.12\00:10:58.55 missionary? I don't know but God definitely had placed a call 00:10:58.59\00:11:01.99 in Timothy's life. During Paul's second missionary trip 00:11:02.02\00:11:06.16 Paul and Silas went to Lystra again the Christian were still 00:11:06.19\00:11:10.07 so strong in the city of Lystra, praise God for that. 00:11:10.10\00:11:12.83 Paul checked up on Timothy. He went to his resume maybe, 00:11:12.87\00:11:17.54 not really but he tacked around and he found out that 00:11:17.57\00:11:21.74 he really did love Jesus and that he was really a 00:11:21.78\00:11:24.85 quality young person and he thought hmm, I think maybe 00:11:24.88\00:11:29.82 Timothy should come with us. What do you think Silas? 00:11:29.85\00:11:32.55 And Silas agreed. Paul came to love Timothy like a son 00:11:32.59\00:11:37.33 and Timothy, although he didn't have a super impressive resume 00:11:37.36\00:11:41.96 with a lot of wonderful talents, he had one really important 00:11:42.00\00:11:47.10 thing that we can all have because it's a choice. 00:11:47.14\00:11:50.31 He chose to be like Jesus and you can have that on your resume 00:11:50.34\00:11:55.54 too, right. Tim and Dr. Luke went with Paul and Silas to 00:11:55.58\00:12:00.22 Philippi, do you remember that part? Do you remember them 00:12:00.25\00:12:02.65 in jail singing and counting it all joy even when things 00:12:02.68\00:12:05.39 were going wrong? And next they headed to Thessalonica 00:12:05.42\00:12:09.86 that's where we're going to pick up our story in Acts 17:1. 00:12:09.89\00:12:14.46 Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, Acts 17 verse 1. 00:12:14.50\00:12:23.41 I hope you have been enjoying these adventures in Acts 00:12:23.44\00:12:27.84 the Apostles, I know I have. Acts 17:1 says 00:12:27.88\00:12:32.61 "Now when they had passed through Anthropoids and Apolonia 00:12:32.65\00:12:38.55 they came to Thessalonica where there was a synagogue 00:12:38.59\00:12:42.06 of the Jews. Then Paul as his custom was what he usually did, 00:12:42.09\00:12:47.10 went in with them and for three Sabbaths he reasoned with them 00:12:47.13\00:12:51.00 from the scriptures...from the Bible. 00:12:51.03\00:12:53.57 Explaining and demonstration that the Christ had to suffer 00:12:53.60\00:12:59.07 and rise again from the dead saying, This Jesus whom I 00:12:59.11\00:13:02.04 preached to you is the Christ. 00:13:02.08\00:13:04.78 And some of them were persuaded and a great multitude 00:13:04.81\00:13:09.78 of devout Greeks and not a few of leading women 00:13:09.82\00:13:13.42 joined Paul and Silas. Praise God. Now, what happened next? 00:13:13.46\00:13:20.16 Do you think that Satan is going to let everything be 00:13:20.20\00:13:22.56 smooth sailing and everything go well? 00:13:22.60\00:13:24.60 No, he always seems to want to mess things up doesn't he? 00:13:24.63\00:13:28.07 Let's see what happens. In verse five it says this. 00:13:28.10\00:13:34.14 But the Jews who were not persuaded became envious 00:13:34.18\00:13:38.95 and they took some of the evil men from the market place 00:13:38.98\00:13:41.18 and gathered a mob and set all the city in an uproar and 00:13:41.22\00:13:44.62 attacked the house of Jason and sought to bring them out 00:13:44.65\00:13:48.56 to the people. Them being Paul and Silas. 00:13:48.59\00:13:51.89 My guess is that Timothy was in there too, he may have been 00:13:51.93\00:13:56.40 a little bit afraid. Who knows? 00:13:56.43\00:13:58.60 But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and 00:13:58.63\00:14:01.37 some of the brethren to the rulers of the city crying out, 00:14:01.40\00:14:03.77 Those who have turned the world upside down have come here too. 00:14:03.81\00:14:07.61 No, they meant that as an insult didn't they? 00:14:07.64\00:14:11.15 Turning the world upside down? That's impossible due to gravity 00:14:11.18\00:14:14.25 and obviously our human powers don't have that. 00:14:14.28\00:14:16.82 They meant that as an insult... Is that an insult to turn 00:14:16.85\00:14:19.49 the world upside down for Jesus. It's almost like a compliment 00:14:19.52\00:14:23.89 right. Um, let's keep reading. Jason has harbored them 00:14:23.93\00:14:28.36 and these are all acting contrary to the decrees 00:14:28.40\00:14:31.60 of Caesar saying that there is another king Jesus. 00:14:31.63\00:14:34.57 And they troubled the crowd and the rulers of the city 00:14:34.60\00:14:38.27 when they heard these things. So when they had taken security 00:14:38.31\00:14:40.68 from Jason and the rest, they let them go. 00:14:40.71\00:14:43.58 So they did let Jason go eventually. 00:14:43.61\00:14:45.58 Um. Turn the world upside down, they let Jason go. 00:14:45.61\00:14:51.72 What was going to happen to Paul and Silas though, right? 00:14:51.75\00:14:54.12 The new believers decided to send Paul and Silas away 00:14:54.16\00:14:59.93 at night time because they didn't want anything bad to 00:14:59.96\00:15:03.53 happen to Paul and Silas. Where did they go? 00:15:03.57\00:15:06.00 Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away 00:15:06.03\00:15:09.04 at night to Berea. When they arrived, they went to the 00:15:09.07\00:15:13.01 Synagogue of the Jews. Isn't that interesting? 00:15:13.04\00:15:15.51 Every time that they went they went to the Synagogue. 00:15:15.54\00:15:17.91 Now did they mysteriously believe things that were 00:15:17.95\00:15:20.98 happening in the Synagogue? No, but they wanted to go to 00:15:21.02\00:15:24.82 church, they wanted to go to church and that was pretty cool 00:15:24.85\00:15:27.92 that they went to the Synagogue and every Sabbath 00:15:27.96\00:15:32.16 that was their custom. 00:15:32.19\00:15:33.53 I love going to church on Sabbath, don't you? 00:15:33.56\00:15:35.43 It's a lot of fun. Now, if you haven't gone to church before 00:15:35.46\00:15:38.70 look up on Google the nearest church closest to you and 00:15:38.73\00:15:42.24 I want to encourage you to check it out. 00:15:42.27\00:15:43.94 They have a lot of super fun things that you can do during 00:15:43.97\00:15:47.68 Sabbath School and then during church service there's songs 00:15:47.71\00:15:50.91 and stories and you can learn more about God so I want to 00:15:50.95\00:15:54.02 encourage you to check out your local church. 00:15:54.05\00:15:56.45 Now, when they got to Berea though, they noticed something 00:15:56.48\00:16:00.89 different about the people in Berea let's read what that was. 00:16:00.92\00:16:04.83 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica 00:16:04.86\00:16:08.73 in that, they received the word with all readiness and searched 00:16:08.76\00:16:11.47 the scriptures daily to find out whether, these things were so. 00:16:11.50\00:16:14.64 In Thessalonica and other places people just read the scriptures 00:16:14.67\00:16:17.97 it's like la-de-da-de da... Yeah, I've heard that before 00:16:18.01\00:16:21.91 But the Bereans, they really studied the scriptures and 00:16:21.94\00:16:26.08 they searched them and they tried to find out if these 00:16:26.11\00:16:29.75 things were so. The Bereans set a great example for us 00:16:29.78\00:16:33.49 didn't they? Does it say that they searched them once-in- 00:16:33.52\00:16:35.39 awhile? Daily. Hmm! Do we search our scriptures 00:16:35.42\00:16:39.43 daily? That's a good question even for Ms. Michele 00:16:39.46\00:16:42.13 to remember to daily get into the word of God and search 00:16:42.16\00:16:46.57 it to find the truth right. 00:16:46.60\00:16:49.04 Therefore many of them believed also not a few of the Greeks 00:16:49.07\00:16:53.88 prominent women as well as men praised God. 00:16:53.91\00:16:57.55 And they didn't believe just because somebody else said so 00:16:57.58\00:17:00.68 They believed because they actually learned it for 00:17:00.72\00:17:04.72 themselves. That's important isn't it? 00:17:04.75\00:17:07.79 As you get older and older you're going to need to 00:17:07.82\00:17:11.29 search the scriptures and know for yourself, 00:17:11.33\00:17:14.26 not just cause mom and dad or grandma and grandpa, 00:17:14.30\00:17:16.93 or auntie or uncle believe it, you need to learn it 00:17:16.97\00:17:20.20 for yourself and believe it for yourself cause that is 00:17:20.24\00:17:23.34 most important thing. That's a personal relationship with 00:17:23.37\00:17:26.04 Jesus, we can't just rely on mom and dad to keep us 00:17:26.07\00:17:30.88 close to Jesus, we need to do our part and He will help us 00:17:30.91\00:17:35.05 to learn more about Him through His word. 00:17:35.08\00:17:37.35 Then, but then when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that 00:17:37.39\00:17:42.36 the Word of God had been preached in Berea 00:17:42.39\00:17:45.03 they came there also and stirred up the crowds, 00:17:45.06\00:17:46.39 they just couldn't leave well enough alone. 00:17:46.43\00:17:49.53 Then immediately the brethren sent Paul away to go to the sea 00:17:49.56\00:17:54.00 but both Silas and Timothy remained in Berea. 00:17:54.04\00:17:57.77 So those who conducted Paul brought him to Athens 00:17:57.81\00:18:02.24 and receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him 00:18:02.28\00:18:06.35 with all speed they departed. So they got Paul away quickly 00:18:06.38\00:18:10.22 and then later he sent back for who? Timothy and Silas 00:18:10.25\00:18:17.26 to join him. And Paul went to Athens with some of the new 00:18:17.29\00:18:21.96 believers. Isn't it amazing how God always takes care of Paul? 00:18:22.00\00:18:27.17 There are so many more adventure stories to come and we have 00:18:27.20\00:18:30.91 heard so many adventure stories of how Paul has faced death 00:18:30.94\00:18:34.64 has faced horrible situations and yet God has 00:18:34.68\00:18:38.15 pulled him through. Can you think of some examples in your 00:18:38.18\00:18:41.85 life where God has helped you? 00:18:41.88\00:18:44.19 I'd love for you to share those with us, you can go into our 00:18:44.22\00:18:48.09 Instagram or our Facebook page and share some stories with us 00:18:48.12\00:18:51.06 or email us, you can even email me directly at 00:18:51.09\00:18:54.53 michele@startingwithjesus.com and I'd love to hear 00:18:54.56\00:18:57.90 those stories and with your permission, 00:18:57.93\00:18:59.63 I could even share some of those. 00:18:59.67\00:19:01.34 I think it's so amazing that we serve a God who loves and cares 00:19:01.37\00:19:05.44 for us and He wants what is best for us and He's going to 00:19:05.47\00:19:10.71 take care of us.
