Timothy the Young Missionary.

Now, when you're a young person
maybe just out of college or

even in high-school, would
you have a very long resume?

No! No you wouldn't.
It would be very short

and that's to be expected
but you'll want to do things

and have different jobs
and different experiences

that will spruce up or
make your resume longer and

more impressive so that
you could get a job, right?

Well, here are some of
the things that were on

Timothy's resume, are you ready?

He grew up in Lystra, you
put your address on the resume.

His dad was Greek
and his mom was Jewish.

You probably don't put
stuff about your parents on your

resume, but that
was his background.

His mom's name is
Eunice and then he also had a

Grandma Lois. He loved God.
You want to put that on your

applying to be a missionary.

And he worshiped on the Sabbath.
That would be another thing

maybe he even
helped out in his church...

Those would be good
things to put on your resume

But he didn't know Jesus yet.

Festivals, that was an important
part of his resume right?

so well for Mark at first

but then after a
second try he did better.

to Timothy, they want to be

missionary? Paul and
Barnaba's visited Timothy's town

of Lystra, you may
remember of some of the things

from a previous
story that I've told you.

And they shared with
Timothy and his grandma Lois

and his mom Eunice about Jesus.
Now they had already talked

to Timothy about the Old
Testament and to believe and

to love God but they
now knew about Jesus.

Timothy admired Paul and
Barnaba's and maybe he even

saw them heal that crippled man
who had palsy, do you remember

that? They probably watched
the heathen people call them
00:10:27.19\00:10:30.63
gods and try to
make sacrifices to them.

Do you remember that part?
Oh my. And he probably saw them

try to stone Paul to
kill him. Did Paul die then,

do you remember the story?
It looks like he was dead but

he wasn't and Timothy after
witnessing all these things

still was starting to
think about being a missionary

himself. Would those sort
of things make you want to be a

missionary? I don't know but
God definitely had placed a call

in Timothy's life. During
Paul's second missionary trip

Paul and Silas went to Lystra
again the Christian were still

so strong in the city of
Lystra, praise God for that.

Paul checked up on Timothy.
He went to his resume maybe,

not really but he tacked
around and he found out that

he really did love
Jesus and that he was really a

quality young person and
he thought hmm, I think maybe

Timothy should come with
us. What do you think Silas?

And Silas agreed. Paul
came to love Timothy like a son

and Timothy, although he didn't
have a super impressive resume

with a lot of wonderful talents,
he had one really important

thing that we can all
have because it's a choice.

He chose to be like Jesus and
you can have that on your resume

too, right. Tim and Dr.
Luke went with Paul and Silas to

Philippi, do you remember
that part? Do you remember them

in jail singing and counting
it all joy even when things

were going wrong? And next
they headed to Thessalonica

that's where we're going to
pick up our story in Acts 17:1.

Matthew, Mark, Luke,
and John, Acts 17 verse 1.

where there was a synagogue

of the Jews. Then Paul as his
custom was what he usually did,

went in with them and for three
Sabbaths he reasoned with them

from the
scriptures...from the Bible.

Explaining and demonstration
that the Christ had to suffer

and rise again from the
dead saying, This Jesus whom I

preached to you is the Christ.

And some of them were
persuaded and a great multitude

joined Paul and Silas. Praise
God. Now, what happened next?

Do you think that Satan
is going to let everything be

smooth sailing and
everything go well?

No, he always seems to want
to mess things up doesn't he?

Let's see what happens.
In verse five it says this.

But the Jews who were
not persuaded became envious

and they took some of the
evil men from the market place

and gathered a mob and set
all the city in an uproar and

attacked the house of Jason
and sought to bring them out

to the people. Them
being Paul and Silas.

My guess is that Timothy was
in there too, he may have been

a little bit afraid. Who knows?

But when they did not find
them, they dragged Jason and

some of the brethren to the
rulers of the city crying out,

Those who have turned the world
upside down have come here too.

No, they meant that
as an insult didn't they?

Turning the world upside down?
That's impossible due to gravity

and obviously our
human powers don't have that.

They meant that as an insult...
Is that an insult to turn

the world upside down for Jesus.
It's almost like a compliment

right. Um, let's keep
reading. Jason has harbored them

and these are all
acting contrary to the decrees

of Caesar saying that
there is another king Jesus.

And they troubled the
crowd and the rulers of the city

when they heard these things.
So when they had taken security

from Jason and the
rest, they let them go.

So they did let
Jason go eventually.

Um. Turn the world
upside down, they let Jason go.

What was going to happen to
Paul and Silas though, right?

The new believers decided
to send Paul and Silas away

didn't want anything bad to

sent Paul and Silas away

they arrived, they went to the

Synagogue of the Jews.
Isn't that interesting?

Every time that they went
they went to the Synagogue.

Now did they mysteriously
believe things that were

happening in the Synagogue?
No, but they wanted to go to

church, they wanted to go to
church and that was pretty cool

that they went to the
Synagogue and every Sabbath

that was their custom.

Now, when they got to Berea
though, they noticed something

These were more fair-minded
than those in Thessalonica

in that, they received the word
with all readiness and searched

the scriptures daily to find out
whether, these things were so.

In Thessalonica and other places
people just read the scriptures

it's like la-de-da-de da...
Yeah, I've heard that before

But the Bereans, they really
studied the scriptures and

they searched them and
they tried to find out if these

things were so. The Bereans
set a great example for us

that they searched them once-in-

awhile? Daily. Hmm! Do
we search our scriptures

daily? That's a good
question even for Ms. Michele

to remember to daily get
into the word of God and search

it to find the truth right.

Therefore many of them believed
also not a few of the Greeks

prominent women as
well as men praised God.

And they didn't believe just
because somebody else said so

They believed because
they actually learned it for

themselves. That's

As you get older and
older you're going to need to

search the scriptures

not just cause mom and

believe it, you need to learn it

it for yourself cause that is

most important thing. That's
a personal relationship with

Jesus, we can't just
rely on mom and dad to keep us

close to Jesus, we need to
do our part and He will help us

to learn more about
Him through His word.

Then, but then when the Jews
from Thessalonica learned that

the Word of God had
been preached in Berea

they came there also
and stirred up the crowds,

they just couldn't
leave well enough alone.

Then immediately the brethren
sent Paul away to go to the sea

but both Silas and
Timothy remained in Berea.

So those who conducted
Paul brought him to Athens

and receiving a command for
Silas and Timothy to come to him

with all speed they departed.
So they got Paul away quickly

and then later he sent
back for who? Timothy and Silas

to join him. And Paul went
to Athens with some of the new

believers. Isn't it amazing how
God always takes care of Paul?

There are so many more adventure
stories to come and we have

heard so many adventure stories
of how Paul has faced death

has faced horrible
situations and yet God has
