The title of today's story
is From Death to Life. Isn't it

amazing that Jesus never stopped
trusting and that He never

sinned, not even once. Jesus
proved, our lesson study says,

that with God's help humans can
trust and obey no matter what

happens or how we feel. That's
hard isn't it? I'm so thankful

that Jesus gave us our amazing
example; aren't you? Now last

week we heard the story of
Jesus's death, His crucifixion

right? But the good news came
Sunday morning. Matthew 27 verse

50 and 51. Are you ready for
this? Here it comes. Now this is

Friday and Jesus cried out with
a loud voice and yielded up His
00:08:39.85\00:08:42.68
spirit. He gave His life for us.
And then in 51: Then behold the

veil of the temple was torn in
two from top to bottom and the

earth quaked and the rocks were
split and the graves were opened

and many bodies of the saints
who had fallen asleep were

raised. Now the good news is
coming, isn't it? But before we

get there...Sorry we have to
wait a tiny bit longer. I want

to talk about that. What
happened when Jesus died?

The earth quaked. That's right.
It was a huge earthquake and

graves opened. We're going to
find out more about that later.

Graves of the saints who had
died. Now it also talks about

how the curtain of the
temple tore when Jesus died. Now

because Jesus had come and He
was the Lamb of God we no longer

needed sacrificial lambs did
we And at that point when the

curtain the lamb escaped that
was almost to be sacrificed on

the altar there in the Jerusalem
temple. The true Lamb had come

and our sins had killed Him.
Wow! There was only one High

Priest now that was needed and
that was Jesus. Jesus was our

High Priest and only the high
priest was allowed to look or go

into the Most Holy Place, right?
And even then only at certain

times, right? Jesus was our real
High Priest and when the temple

curtain tore in between the Holy
and the Most Holy Place everyone

could see then into the Most
Holy Place. And that was showing

that everyone can now go before
God. We don't need someone else

to pray for us. We can
pray directly to God. Now let's

pretend that this is the curtain
right? Let's say that it had

torn from bottom to top. Well
someone could have argued well

somebody just got their knife or
their...I don't know what they

would have used back then, right
Their gardening utensil and they

just did a little rip in it
and they tore it all the way up.

That's humanly possible, right?
But these curtains were so tall

that unless you had a ladder or
something very tall to stand on

there was no way that a human
could have torn the curtain from

top to bottom. That was Divine
intervention. That was an angel

that did that, right? And it was
very symbolic and it's pretty

cool to see what that meant.
Now the earth quaked and the

righteous people's graves opened
up and Mary and the disciples

and the friends wished at that
point that they could die too

along with their Savior. They
were so sad. During those three
00:11:08.03\00:11:14.34
dark hours He said it was
finished and it was really
00:11:14.37\00:11:17.11
interesting because there
was a soldier by the cross who
00:11:17.14\00:11:18.61
actually really gave a testimony
in that he said: So when the
00:11:18.64\00:11:23.95
centurion who stood opposite
Jesus saw that He cried like
00:11:23.98\00:11:27.95
this and breathed His last, he
said, truly this man was the Son
00:11:27.98\00:11:32.39
of God. This was a heathen Roman
saying the truth out loud. The
00:11:32.42\00:11:37.36
truth that Pilot, the truth that
Herod, the truth that even the
00:11:37.39\00:11:40.86
disciples hadn't been
able to say was said by a Roman
00:11:40.90\00:11:44.57
centurion. That was found
in Mark 15 verse 39. Now you
00:11:44.60\00:11:51.21
remember that the Jewish leaders
didn't want to go into the court
00:11:51.24\00:11:55.74
of Romans because they'd be
defiled. Well they also didn't
00:11:55.78\00:12:00.55
want anybody to be hanging
on the cross during the Sabbath
00:12:00.58\00:12:04.52
because that was also wrong
according to their rules. Not to
00:12:04.55\00:12:07.32
kill someone but to leave the
body on the cross on the Sabbath
00:12:07.36\00:12:10.09
And so they wanted to take the
bodies down at that point and
00:12:10.13\00:12:14.10
Jesus has already died and
so what happens when people die.

Well we have to make funeral
arrangements or at least burial

arrangements, right? And back
then they would bury people in a
00:12:21.47\00:12:25.57
tomb and this is kind of what
it may have looked like, right?

So it was like a cave kind of.
They may have hewn it out of the
00:12:29.68\00:12:34.52
rock or it might have been a
natural cave. And then to close
00:12:34.55\00:12:38.22
it they would just put a stone
in front of the entrance, right?

And so let's jump right back
into our story in the Bible in
00:12:40.36\00:12:44.86
John 19 verse 31. John 19 verse
31 says: Therefore because it
00:12:44.89\00:12:50.60
was the preparation day,
that's Friday. We call it the
00:12:50.63\00:12:52.90
preparation day at our house
too That the bodies should not
00:12:52.93\00:12:56.00
remain on the cross on the
Sabbath for the Sabbath was a
00:12:56.04\00:12:58.84
high day and the Jews asked
Pilot that their legs be broken
00:12:58.87\00:13:01.41
and that they might be taken
away. Then the soldiers came and
00:13:01.44\00:13:04.51
broke the legs of the first and
the other who was crucified with
00:13:04.55\00:13:07.35
Him. The two thieves on either
side, right? But when they came
00:13:07.38\00:13:10.09
to Jesus and saw He was already
dead they did not break His legs
00:13:10.12\00:13:13.05
but one of the soldiers pierced
His side with a spear and
00:13:13.09\00:13:16.79
immediately blood and water came
out. And he who has seen has
00:13:16.83\00:13:20.20
seen has testified and his
testimony is true and he knows
00:13:20.23\00:13:23.40
that what he is telling is the
truth for these things were done
00:13:23.43\00:13:26.13
that the scripture should be
fulfilled. This was actually a
00:13:26.17\00:13:28.70
prophecy in the Old Testament
that not one of His bones should
00:13:28.74\00:13:32.64
be broken. And so they were
ready to take them down. Now
00:13:32.67\00:13:37.71
they broke the legs of the other
two so that they would die more
00:13:37.75\00:13:40.15
quickly because they had not
died yet. Crucifixion was a slow
00:13:40.18\00:13:43.55
and very painful death. The
disciples wanted Jesus to have a
00:13:43.59\00:13:47.72
proper respectful burial
but they were too poor and they
00:13:47.76\00:13:52.16
would also need permission
to get His body from the Romans
00:13:52.19\00:13:55.66
right? That's when two rich men
stepped in to help. Two rich men
00:13:55.70\00:13:59.57
that they didn't even realize
wanted to help them. And let's

verses 38-40: After this Joseph

Arimathea, being a disciple of
Jesus, but secretly for fear of

the Jews asked Pilot that
he might take away the body of
00:14:14.52\00:14:17.39
Jesus and Pilot gave his
permission. So he came and took
00:14:17.42\00:14:21.39
the body of Jesus. And Nicodemus
who at first had come to Jesus
00:14:21.42\00:14:25.09
by night also came bringing
a mixture of myrrh and aloes,
00:14:25.13\00:14:29.40
about a hundred pounds. Then
they took the body of Jesus and
00:14:29.43\00:14:32.53
bound it in strips of linen with
spices as was the custom of the
00:14:32.57\00:14:36.30
Jews to bury. Now in the place
where He was crucified there was

a garden and in the garden a
new tomb in which no one had yet

laid. So there they laid Jesus
because of the Jews preparation

day for the tomb was nearby.
So they did all those things for

Jesus, the things that the
disciples couldn't afford to do.

Those two disciples, secret
disciples had done that. And

they actually felt bad for
not telling everyone they were
00:14:57.56\00:15:01.40
disciples sooner. They had done
things in secret to try to help

save Jesus in the past but now
they were really sharing that

they were disciples of Jesus,
weren't they? And that was in
00:15:08.44\00:15:12.94
Joseph's own tomb, the tomb he
was supposed to lay in when he
00:15:12.97\00:15:15.38
died one day. Jesus rested on
the Sabbath there in the tomb,
00:15:15.41\00:15:19.88
sleeping, the sleep of death,
right? And just like at creation
00:15:19.91\00:15:24.52
when He rested on the Sabbath
He was again giving us an
00:15:24.55\00:15:26.62
example of what we should
do. But then, let's flip over to

Luke 23 and find out what
happens next in our story. All

the gospels talk about this
very exciting story, don't they?

And they all share a little
bit different perspective and

different things about it which
is really cool. If you've seen

an event and your friend has
seen the same thing you're going

remember different things about
it, right? And so that's the

same thing with the disciples.
Luke 23:54-56 says: Woop let's

Because that's 22. We were back

another chapter, have mercy.

verse 55: And the women who had

come with Him from Galilee
followed after and they observed

the tomb and how His body
was laid. Then they returned and

prepared spices and fragrant
oils and they rested on the

Sabbath according to the
commandment. So there the women

saw where He had been laid,
right? All right. Let's keep

reading this very exciting story
Pilot, what's everybody thinking

at this point, right? Pilot
really didn't think much of his

actions. He had done many
hateful, wicked things like this

in the past. The priests
and rulers were actually not as
00:16:39.59\00:16:42.33
happy as they thought they were
going to be. They were actually
00:16:42.36\00:16:45.10
really afraid because they
remembered something. The tomb
00:16:45.13\00:16:47.97
was sealed, there was 100 Roman
soldiers guarding it. Yet they
00:16:48.00\00:16:51.87
remembered that Jesus had said
when He was on earth that He was
00:16:51.91\00:16:54.68
going to rise again in
three days. Many people were
00:16:54.71\00:16:59.05
disappointed at Jesus' death and
very sad. And the disciples had

forgotten that promise though,
the one that the Jewish leaders

remembered about Him rising
from the dead in three days.

The disciples had forgotten
that They had forgotten what was

called the sign of Jonah.
You remember how many days that

Jonah was in the belly of the
whale. That's right, three days

and three nights. And in Jewish
times the beginning or the

ending of a day marked one
day so Friday was the first day.

Sabbath was the second day, but
then Sabbath at sunset began the

third day. That's when Sunday
started was at sunset according

to Jewish tradition Just like we

sunset on Friday night, right?
And the Roman soldiers were at

the grave. It was the middle

would have been the middle
of the night or towards the

beginning of the night and then
as the night wore on the Roman

soldiers were there but there
was also two invisible armies

there. Satan remembered
what Jesus had said as well and

Satan's angels were there. But
so were God's angels. Let's flip

over to Matthew 28. Ooo we're
getting to the good part folks.

This is so exciting. Matthew
28:2-4 says: And behold there

was another great earthquake and
the angel of the Lord descended

from heaven and came and rolled
back the stone from the door and

sat on it. I love that part, a
little detail, the angel sat on

the stone. His countenance was
like lightning and his clothing

was as white as snow. And the
guards shook for fear and they
00:18:31.44\00:18:34.94
became like dead men. Dead men,
they just keeled over. They just

fell down because they couldn't
look at the brightness. And the

guards shook for fear but the
angel answered and said to the

women, Do not be afraid for I
know that you seek Jesus who was

crucified. Right? What happened
at this point? The stone was

rolled away and Jesus was alive.
A mighty angel rolled away the

stone, scared soldiers fell down
the Son of God, Jesus' angels

called, God's angels called, Son
of God, come forth, Thy Father

calls thee. Another angel
unwrapped Jesus's body from all

those grave clothes, just like
Lazarus had had on too right?

And Jesus carefully folded them
there and Jesus walked out of

the tomb. Victorious. Praise God
The angels rejoiced and sang and

bowed down and the soldiers
saw and heard this whole thing

unfold in front of their eyes.
Jesus shouted forth, I am the

resurrection and the
life. The soldiers started back

to Jerusalem

to tell Pilot and they told
everyone along the way what they

had seen. But some heard and
they told the priests about it

and they said, No, no, no, no,
bring the soldiers here first

and they tried to bribe them to
lie. And the soldiers decided to

do it. They decided to lie and
say that the disciples had come

and stolen the body away. And
the priests said that they would

protect them from Pilot but
Pilot had found out the truth.

Pilot knew what had happened at
the grave because someone else

had told him. And Jesus was
alive, alive again, alive for

evermore. Nothing could
quench those soldiers' initial

testimony. News spread that
Jesus was alive. Wow! Christ had

to suffer and rise again from
the dead and He did that for us.
