(Miss Ruthie) Hello boys and girls. Welcome to Starting With 00:00:23.08\00:00:28.92 Jesus. I am so glad you're here and I hope that you're starting 00:00:28.96\00:00:31.93 everything you do with Jesus. Today's Bible story is about the 00:00:31.96\00:00:37.37 gift that Jesus gave us, the ultimate, the greatest gift that 00:00:37.40\00:00:42.27 Jesus gave to us. And I cannot wait the hear our Bible story 00:00:42.30\00:00:47.84 today. But before we get to that Bible story let's join with some 00:00:47.88\00:00:51.41 singing. And I think we have a new theme song this month so I'm 00:00:51.45\00:00:55.45 really excited about it and I hope that you'll learn it along 00:00:55.48\00:00:58.02 with me. 00:00:58.05\00:00:59.39 ¤ ¤ 00:00:59.42\00:01:07.60 ¤ ¤ 00:01:41.03\00:01:48.24 ¤ ¤ 00:03:09.82\00:03:11.15 ¤ ¤ 00:03:41.88\00:03:46.25 ¤ ¤ 00:04:54.32\00:04:58.69 Hi boys and girls I'm looking for another page in God's great 00:04:58.73\00:05:01.66 book of nature. I brought a little friend with me today. 00:05:01.70\00:05:04.00 Her name is Olivia She's about eight months old 00:05:04.03\00:05:07.07 so she's still a puppy. Now some of you have had puppies before 00:05:07.10\00:05:10.87 and some of you have puppies now and you know that puppies can be 00:05:10.91\00:05:15.78 wiggle worms because they have a lot of energy. You're busy all 00:05:15.81\00:05:18.68 all-day aren't you? Let's take a look at a typical day in the 00:05:18.71\00:05:25.39 life of Olivia the puppy. After waking up in the morning and 00:05:25.42\00:05:29.19 eating breakfast she runs down the stairs and heads outside. 00:05:29.22\00:05:33.76 She half rides, half rolls her volleyball down the hill. She 00:05:33.80\00:05:37.80 loves that ball. She plays with her favorite squeaky toy. Boy 00:05:37.83\00:05:42.90 does she love that toy? Can you hear it. (squeak, squeak) She 00:05:42.94\00:05:51.38 loves playing with her fur cousin. They tumble around in 00:05:51.41\00:05:54.02 the grass. They play tag and they run in circles all the time 00:05:54.05\00:05:57.82 Olivia likes to sniff around and explore the different nooks and 00:05:57.85\00:06:02.09 crannies of the forest. She wants to know if any other 00:06:02.12\00:06:05.23 animals have visited the area. Dogs like to roll around in the 00:06:05.26\00:06:09.76 grass and soak up any scent they find that they like. So that's 00:06:09.80\00:06:13.20 what she does and then she's off again. Now after being outside 00:06:13.23\00:06:19.87 she runs back up the stairs to eat and continues playing, of 00:06:19.91\00:06:24.71 course. And sometimes you even see her smiley face toy roll 00:06:24.75\00:06:29.32 right on by. You know what that means. Well, with all that 00:06:29.35\00:06:35.82 playing she does she sure gets tuckered out. She still finds 00:06:35.86\00:06:39.86 that nice comfy spot to rest and there she falls fast asleep. Shh 00:06:39.89\00:06:48.00 you might wake her up. She needs to rest so she can do it all 00:06:48.04\00:06:53.98 again tomorrow. Just like Olivia needs her rest from being busy 00:06:54.01\00:06:57.81 all day, we need our rest from being busy all week. We learn at 00:06:57.85\00:07:02.48 school or at home, we do chores, we play, explore nature, some of 00:07:02.52\00:07:08.69 you help out your parents in your business or your neighbor 00:07:08.72\00:07:11.99 on his farm or your grandma in her garden. We are busy all week 00:07:12.03\00:07:16.80 and we need a break. God knows that so He made a time every 00:07:16.83\00:07:20.84 day where we can sleep and He made a time each week where we 00:07:20.87\00:07:24.94 can rest. You see when God made man, He gave us six days each 00:07:24.97\00:07:30.08 week to do everyday things. But He knew that by the end of the 00:07:30.11\00:07:34.28 week we'd be pretty tired and we would need a break. So on the 00:07:34.32\00:07:38.72 seventh day of the week He gave us a Sabbath rest so we can rest 00:07:38.75\00:07:43.09 in Him and be rejuvenated spiritually through Him. 00:07:43.12\00:07:45.96 Rejuvenated means to get your energy back so you can keep 00:07:45.99\00:07:49.70 going. As you see right from the beginning God was thinking 00:07:49.73\00:07:55.34 of giving you rest. In Mark 2:27 Jesus explains this by saying: 00:07:55.37\00:08:01.34 That means that the Sabbath was made for us as a gift for all 00:08:05.18\00:08:09.52 mankind, for every culture, for everyone to enjoy rest in Him. 00:08:09.55\00:08:15.32 I hope that at the end of your week you get to rest and enjoy 00:08:15.36\00:08:18.79 your Sabbath day. Until next time boys and girls have a 00:08:18.83\00:08:22.20 happy Sabbath. Adios. 00:08:22.23\00:08:25.17 ¤ ¤ 00:08:25.20\00:08:29.07 I was just thinking about love's greatest gift (Miss Michelle) 00:08:29.10\00:08:31.84 That's what our story's about today. Let's pray. 00:08:31.87\00:08:35.91 Dear heavenly Father, thank you so very much for giving us 00:08:35.94\00:08:39.31 love's greatest gift in Jesus. Please send your Holy Spirit to 00:08:39.35\00:08:42.78 be here with us today. We love you. Amen. 00:08:42.82\00:08:45.59 Do you remember where Jesus was when we left off our story last 00:08:45.62\00:08:49.96 week? He was in Herod's court. Pilot had sent Him there hoping 00:08:49.99\00:08:54.16 to patch things up and to make things right with Herod. And 00:08:54.20\00:09:00.40 Herod, you may have heard that name before, you'd be right. 00:09:00.44\00:09:04.61 He's the same Herod who killed John the Baptist and he still 00:09:04.64\00:09:08.54 felt guilty about that. In fact, he thought maybe that by saving 00:09:08.58\00:09:12.21 Jesus, he could make up for his bad choice of killing John the 00:09:12.25\00:09:15.88 Baptist and he also wanted to see Jesus do some miracles first 00:09:15.92\00:09:19.99 hand. So even though he looked at Jesus as being and knew just 00:09:20.02\00:09:26.13 like Pilot did that He was innocent, he still wanted to put 00:09:26.16\00:09:28.46 Him to the test. So he brought in some sick people and he said 00:09:28.50\00:09:32.17 if you heal them I'll set you free. Do you think Jesus did? 00:09:32.20\00:09:35.94 He didn't. I'm sure He wanted to heal them, but He would have 00:09:35.97\00:09:39.84 have been healing them for the wrong reason. It would have been 00:09:39.87\00:09:42.04 a selfish reason which technically would have been a 00:09:42.08\00:09:44.21 sin, right? So He didn't. Now the priests were scared at this 00:09:44.25\00:09:49.48 point because they thought that maybe He would do the miracle 00:09:49.52\00:09:52.19 but He didn't. And that's when we're going to pick up the story 00:09:52.22\00:09:56.39 in the book of Luke. Luke 23 verse 9 says: And he questioned 00:09:56.42\00:10:01.50 Him with many words but He answered him nothing. And then 00:10:01.53\00:10:05.47 Herod and his men of war treated Him with contempt and mocked Him 00:10:05.50\00:10:09.57 which means that they mistreated Him, and arrayed Him in a 00:10:09.60\00:10:11.84 gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilot. Herod really didn't do 00:10:11.87\00:10:16.54 much of anything did he? But verse 12 says, That very day 00:10:16.58\00:10:20.45 Pilot and Herod became friends with each other, for previously 00:10:20.48\00:10:22.82 they had had enmity with each other. So that part of it worked 00:10:22.85\00:10:25.45 out, right? So He's back now with Pilot. You see, at Passover 00:10:25.49\00:10:31.93 there was a special tradition and that was that one prisoner 00:10:31.96\00:10:34.60 would be set free. That's right. Someone who was very guilty 00:10:34.63\00:10:38.57 would be set free. And Pilot had an idea. He thought I'm going 00:10:38.60\00:10:43.17 to choose a really bad prisoner. Hmm, who should I pick? 00:10:43.20\00:10:46.01 Barabbas. He was horrible. He was a wicked prisoner. He looked 00:10:46.04\00:10:49.48 evil and he was evil. He was condemned to be crucified. He 00:10:49.51\00:10:53.62 had already been tried. And he thought, I'll set Jesus and 00:10:53.65\00:10:56.92 Barabbas side by side and surely they'll set Jesus free. But did 00:10:56.95\00:11:01.69 they? Luke tells us more from the story in verse 18: And they 00:11:01.72\00:11:05.89 all cried out at once, Away with this man and release to us 00:11:05.93\00:11:09.96 Barabbas, who had been thrown into prison for a certain 00:11:10.00\00:11:13.37 rebellion made in the city and for murder. Pilot, therefore, 00:11:13.40\00:11:16.37 wishing to release Jesus again called out to them, but they 00:11:16.40\00:11:19.54 shouted saying Crucify Him, Crucify Him. Then he said to 00:11:19.57\00:11:24.91 them a third time, Why? What evil has He done? I find no 00:11:24.95\00:11:28.02 reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let 00:11:28.05\00:11:31.82 Him go. But they were insistent demanding with loud voices that 00:11:31.85\00:11:35.39 He be crucified. And the voices of these men and the chief 00:11:35.42\00:11:38.03 prevailed. It was at this time as well that Pilot got a note 00:11:38.06\00:11:44.03 from his wife and his wife said Don't do anything to Jesus. 00:11:44.07\00:11:48.50 I had a dream about Him, please don't. But did he listen to his 00:11:48.54\00:11:53.68 wife? Did he listen to his very own conscience? Let's see what 00:11:53.71\00:11:58.85 happened. So Pilot gave sentence that it should be as they 00:11:58.88\00:12:04.85 requested and he released to them the one that they requested 00:12:04.89\00:12:08.32 who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison but he 00:12:08.36\00:12:12.16 delivered Jesus to their will. He let Barabbas go free and 00:12:12.19\00:12:17.17 Jesus he gave over to the ruckus crowd Now during this time that 00:12:17.20\00:12:23.54 He had been in the Roman control the soldiers had been very 00:12:23.57\00:12:28.28 unkind to Him and they had whipped Him and hurt Him very 00:12:28.31\00:12:32.55 badly and He hadn't had anything to eat either since Passover 00:12:32.58\00:12:35.18 supper Thursday night so He was very hungry, He was bleeding. 00:12:35.22\00:12:40.12 They had put now a crown of thorns on His head and He was 00:12:40.16\00:12:47.96 very weak. And they then brought Jesus out and Pilot gave Him 00:12:48.00\00:12:56.37 over to them. He washed his hands in a basin of water, it 00:12:56.40\00:13:00.94 says in Matthew to try to like wash off what he had done or just symbolize that he 00:13:00.98\00:13:04.08 wasn't responsible. But we know that he was responsible just 00:13:04.11\00:13:08.38 like the priests and the people, all the people shouting, Crucify 00:13:08.42\00:13:10.89 Him were responsible. Jesus had the guilt of all the sins of the 00:13:10.92\00:13:17.03 world along with all the physical suffering that He had 00:13:17.06\00:13:19.89 had due to the Roman soldiers and probably some of the Jewish 00:13:19.93\00:13:22.83 people when they were trying to pull Jesus away from them as 00:13:22.86\00:13:26.17 well, hurt Him as well. And Barabbas's cross, the cross that 00:13:26.20\00:13:29.87 was meant to kill a criminal was laid on Jesus's bleeding 00:13:29.90\00:13:34.34 shoulders. The whips that they used would have little pieces of 00:13:34.38\00:13:37.58 rock or metal in them and so those would dig into their back 00:13:37.61\00:13:41.38 and it was just horrific. And then they put that wood, which 00:13:41.42\00:13:45.29 I'm sure was not sanded, um what do you call, sanded? Right? 00:13:45.32\00:13:48.96 When we do projects we sand it so it's nice and smooth. 00:13:48.99\00:13:51.49 I'm sure the wood from the cross was not sanded and so then they 00:13:51.53\00:13:54.10 placed that on Jesus's shoulders Jesus was just simply too weak 00:13:54.13\00:13:57.43 at that point and He staggered under the weight of the cross 00:13:57.47\00:14:00.44 and fell. It wasn't just the weight of the cross He felt 00:14:00.47\00:14:03.17 though. We talked about that before. It was also the weight 00:14:03.20\00:14:05.77 of all the sins of the world. They put the cross on his 00:14:05.81\00:14:08.88 shoulders yet again and He fell again. He was carrying something 00:14:08.91\00:14:13.68 even heavier, like I said, than the cross. In Mark 15:21 it'll 00:14:13.72\00:14:18.82 tell us what happened next. All the gospels talk about this very 00:14:18.85\00:14:23.32 important story in the life of Jesus, Right? Mark 15 verse 21 00:14:23.36\00:14:28.83 says: Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, 00:14:28.86\00:14:33.84 the father of Alexander and Rufus as he was coming out of 00:14:33.87\00:14:37.27 the country passing by, to bear Jesus's cross. And they brought 00:14:37.31\00:14:41.84 him to the place Golgotha which is translated The place of a 00:14:41.88\00:14:46.11 skull Now Simon didn't know Jesus but we know that actually 00:14:46.15\00:14:51.75 his sons were followers of Jesus and later he became a disciple 00:14:51.79\00:14:55.69 as well. Jesus's special disciples, where were they at 00:14:55.72\00:14:59.39 this point Well thankfully they were not hurt by the Jewish 00:14:59.43\00:15:03.77 council or by the Roman soldiers. They were following along behind in the 00:15:03.80\00:15:07.77 crowd and Mary Jesus' mother was with John. She was full of 00:15:07.80\00:15:11.77 sadness and pain and doubt at this point as to whether her son 00:15:11.81\00:15:16.61 was, in fact, the Messiah. And they had hoped that He would use 00:15:16.64\00:15:23.65 His special power, that Jesus would use His special power and 00:15:23.69\00:15:27.06 yet as they nailed Jesus to the cross, Mary fainted. She fainted 00:15:27.09\00:15:31.19 She fell and they took her away. She couldn't imagine that this 00:15:31.23\00:15:35.26 was actually happening to her little boy. Pilot was angry at 00:15:35.30\00:15:38.93 himself at this point and so he decided to do something else 00:15:38.97\00:15:42.60 besides just wash his hands. He thought, I'm going to nail a 00:15:42.64\00:15:45.51 sign to the top of the cross to say exactly who this is and he 00:15:45.54\00:15:50.48 was correct in what he said. Let's see what it says here in 00:15:50.51\00:15:53.75 John 19:19. So that's easy to remember 19:19. It says: Now 00:15:53.78\00:16:02.79 Pilot wrote a title and put it on the cross and the writing was 00:16:02.82\00:16:06.46 this: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. Then many of 00:16:06.49\00:16:12.20 the Jews read this title for the place where Jesus was crucified 00:16:12.23\00:16:15.00 was near the city and if he wrote it in three languages, in 00:16:15.04\00:16:18.47 Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, so everybody could read what it 00:16:18.51\00:16:21.14 said. Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to 00:16:21.18\00:16:24.08 Pilot, Do not write The King of the Jews but He said I am the 00:16:24.11\00:16:28.78 King of the Jews. And Pilot answered, What I have written, I 00:16:28.82\00:16:31.29 have written. He was up to here with those priests and leaders 00:16:31.32\00:16:34.19 wasn't he? Then the soldiers when they had crucified Jesus 00:16:34.22\00:16:37.99 took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, 00:16:38.03\00:16:41.86 and also the tunic and the tunic was without seam woven 00:16:41.90\00:16:44.43 from the top in one piece. They said therefore among themselves 00:16:44.47\00:16:47.34 Let us not tear it but cast lots for it whose it shall be that 00:16:47.37\00:16:52.37 the scripture might be fulfilled which says they divided my 00:16:52.41\00:16:54.88 garments among them and for my clothing they cast lots. What 00:16:54.91\00:16:59.08 happened then at this point? Jesus hung in between two 00:16:59.11\00:17:03.22 thieves as we know, we see many scenes of the crucifixion and 00:17:03.25\00:17:06.96 there are three crosses, right? One thief mocked him and made 00:17:06.99\00:17:11.23 fun of him just like everyone else was doing around them. 00:17:11.26\00:17:13.93 But the other thief was thinking maybe He is the Son of God. 00:17:13.96\00:17:18.83 Maybe He can help me. He was watching and remembering what He 00:17:18.87\00:17:22.67 had heard Jesus say. He heard Jesus say, Father, forgive them 00:17:22.70\00:17:25.97 for they know not what they do. And he asked Jesus to save him. 00:17:26.01\00:17:31.08 Jesus was always thinking of others, even on the cross, and 00:17:31.11\00:17:33.92 Jesus spoke to the thief that day and said: Surely today you 00:17:33.95\00:17:39.45 you will be with me in Paradise. It's very important where the 00:17:39.49\00:17:42.39 comma is in that sentence. You can talk to your parents about 00:17:42.42\00:17:43.93 that one. But He was saying, I'm telling you right now today as 00:17:43.96\00:17:47.93 we hang on this cross when I come again you're going to be 00:17:47.96\00:17:51.17 with me because you've asked for forgiveness. Isn't that amazing? 00:17:51.20\00:17:54.57 Jesus was also thinking of His mother and he saw His mother 00:17:54.60\00:17:57.31 therewith John and He asked John to take care of His mother. 00:17:57.34\00:17:59.77 Jesus felt how God hates sin because He felt that separation 00:17:59.81\00:18:03.75 and He couldn't see beyond the cross at this point. When He was 00:18:03.78\00:18:07.28 here on earth, He told people you know I will rise again in 00:18:07.32\00:18:10.95 three days, Right? But now as He hung on the cross, He couldn't 00:18:10.99\00:18:13.56 see that. At noon as Jesus hung on the cross it became dark and 00:18:13.59\00:18:18.06 it stayed pitch dark for three hours. This was Satan's last 00:18:18.09\00:18:23.06 attempt. Jesus couldn't see beyond the cross and he thought 00:18:23.10\00:18:26.13 maybe at this point, He would give up. Matthew 27 verse 45 00:18:26.17\00:18:34.94 says...Matthew 27 verse 45. Let's jump over there. 27:45 00:18:34.98\00:18:42.62 Here we go. Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there 00:18:42.65\00:18:45.65 was darkness and at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud 00:18:45.69\00:18:48.56 voice saying...And He said in the language of their day but 00:18:48.59\00:18:52.59 I'm going to use it in English so we can understand, My God, My 00:18:52.63\00:18:55.76 God, why have you forsaken me? Some of those who stood there 00:18:55.80\00:19:02.70 thought that they heard something and they said, Is He 00:19:02.74\00:19:05.41 calling for Elijah. But He hadn't. He cried out and with a 00:19:05.44\00:19:09.94 loud voice He yielded up His spirit and He died. And Jesus 00:19:09.98\00:19:16.82 though, He kept trusting God and He didn't give up even when He 00:19:16.85\00:19:20.49 felt that complete separation from His heavenly Father. Even 00:19:20.52\00:19:23.83 though He felt like God had left Him He knew that that couldn't 00:19:23.86\00:19:28.40 be true. The angels were there. They were watching and they 00:19:28.43\00:19:31.33 longed to help their Savior, their friend, their Lord. But 00:19:31.37\00:19:36.04 they couldn't, they weren't allowed to. The darkness left 00:19:36.07\00:19:38.74 and that's when Jesus cried It Is Finished! and He died. Oh 00:19:38.77\00:19:42.64 how He loves us. He loves us so much. Our memory verse says 00:19:42.68\00:19:49.98 Greater love has no one that this than to lay down one's life 00:19:50.02\00:19:55.56 for his friends. John 15 verse 13. That's what Jesus did for us 00:19:55.59\00:20:03.33 that day. It wasn't just a physical death that He died 00:20:03.37\00:20:07.20 although He did. He died a spiritual death as well because 00:20:07.24\00:20:11.94 He felt that separation from God You might say, the second death, 00:20:11.97\00:20:15.74 Miss Michelle, what does that mean? Well, I'm glad you asked. 00:20:15.78\00:20:18.51 The second death. So the first death like Adam and Eve they 00:20:18.55\00:20:22.15 said the wages of sin is death. And so Adam and Eve, they did 00:20:22.18\00:20:24.19 die, right? But then it says the gift of God is eternal life. 00:20:24.22\00:20:29.26 Well there's technically two deaths, right? My grandma died 00:20:29.29\00:20:32.73 but I know I'm going to see her again and she'll rise again. 00:20:32.76\00:20:35.56 And yet people who make evil, wicked decisions in life and 00:20:35.60\00:20:39.17 decide not to be on Jesus' team they may die now but then 00:20:39.20\00:20:42.47 they're dead for forever. So the second death is the forever 00:20:42.50\00:20:46.44 death. The first death is the I'll see you soon death. And 00:20:46.47\00:20:50.55 that's the kind of death that we die at the end of our lives, 00:20:50.58\00:20:53.72 right? If we believe in Jesus. Jesus died the second death for 00:20:53.75\00:20:57.55 us and He conquered death, He conquered sin and He reigned 00:20:57.59\00:21:02.76 victorious and next week we're going to find out about how that 00:21:02.79\00:21:06.83 happened, right? I can't wait because it's probably one of the 00:21:06.86\00:21:11.37 most exciting stories in the Bible. This to me is one of the 00:21:11.40\00:21:12.73 most sad stories in the Bible and yet happy at the same time. 00:21:12.77\00:21:15.20 It's like a mixture of emotions isn't it? And yet our next story 00:21:15.24\00:21:19.87 next Sabbath, don't miss it, it's one of the most joyous 00:21:19.91\00:21:23.11 stories and I can't wait to tell it to you guys. Sometimes when I hear certain sounds it 00:24:37.37\00:24:40.98 reminds me of Bible stories. I call those Bible Sounds. Does 00:24:41.01\00:24:44.81 that ever happen to you? Let's try it. I'll play some sounds 00:24:44.85\00:24:47.85 and we'll identify them together And when we do we'll see if it 00:24:47.88\00:24:51.95 reminds of anything we find in the Bible. Ready, Here's the 00:24:51.99\00:24:55.52 the first one. Listen carefully. (Wolves yapping and howling) 00:24:55.56\00:25:08.77 Wow. That's a little scary isn't 00:25:08.80\00:25:11.84 it? Well, those are wolves. In the book of Matthew it warns us 00:25:11.87\00:25:16.98 to beware of wolves in sheep's clothing and in the book of 00:25:17.01\00:25:20.65 Isaiah, it tells us that the wolf and lamb will be grazing 00:25:20.68\00:25:24.95 together in heaven. Wow, what a scene. Okay, let's try another 00:25:24.99\00:25:29.96 one. Ready? Listen carefully. (Baby goats and bird calls) 00:25:29.99\00:25:43.74 Ah isn't that so sweet? Those are sounds of baby goats. The 00:25:43.77\00:25:49.54 book of Leviticus mentions a scapegoat when it describes 00:25:49.58\00:25:52.68 the cleansing of the sanctuary. And in the book of Daniel a goat 00:25:52.71\00:25:57.39 represented the kingdom of Greece. Okay how about we try 00:25:57.42\00:26:01.69 one more. This one's going to be tricky so listen very carefully. 00:26:01.72\00:26:05.43 Ready? (sounds like birds or frogs chirping or trilling) 00:26:05.46\00:26:23.24 Did you guess frog because that's what they were. They were 00:26:23.28\00:26:25.25 frogs. Exodus tells us about the second plague, the plague of 00:26:25.28\00:26:29.58 frogs that were all over the land when Pharaoh wouldn't let 00:26:29.62\00:26:32.02 Israel go. I'm not sure they saw frogs as sacred anymore after 00:26:32.05\00:26:36.42 that, huh? That was fun listening to Bible sounds.
