have a story for you that comes

friends with a Catholic priest
in town. One day they were

walking down the street together
and they see the evangelical

preacher from another church
coming their way. And when this

preacher sees the Catholic
priest coming his way, he just

goes and stands right in front
of him and he tells him, Your

church doesn't follow what
the Bible says because the Bible

clearly teaches that we
shouldn't have images and bow

down to them and your church has
images and people bow down to

them so you are not the true
church. You don't follow what

the Bible says. Well the
Catholic replies, Yeah I know

my church doesn't follow
everything the Bible teaches

but your church does not either
because if you keep reading the

commandments the fourth
commandment clearly states that

Saturday is God's holy day so
that's actually the right day to

you guys worship on Sunday just

like we do. So I know my church
doesn't follow everything in the

Bible but your church doesn't
either. The true church follows

all the commandments of God.
Ahh, my grandpa was in shock.

because he had never heard this
teaching before from the Bible.

So he didn't say anything but
what he learned that day he kept

in his heart. Well, many years
passed by and another Catholic

priest comes to town. And around
this time one of my uncles finds

out that this tiny church
in town is going to have some

prophetic seminars. But my
grandpa said You know what,

You need to find out if that's
the true church. Ask the pastor

what's the true day to worship
and if he says Sunday, then we

won't go because we know that's
not the true church. So my uncle

goes and so he goes back home
and tells my grandpa, You know

what the pastor in that tiny
church says it's Saturday. Oh

okay, so that must be the
true church so we'll go to those

meetings. And they did.
Well, they got baptized and they

became the first Seventh-day
Adventists in that little town.

But when the new Catholic priest
found out that my grandpa's

family had become Seventh-day
Adventists, he got so upset that

the next time he had mass he
told everybody there that they

could not speak to my grandpa's
family anymore. My father

remembers the day after this
happened when he went to school

and all the children came and
spit at him. And you know what

boys and girls, the day is
coming the Bible tells us that

all who try to live a Godly
life and follow Jesus will be

persecuted. But if you purpose
right now to be faithful to

Jesus no matter what He will
help us to be faithful and stand

up for Him when that time comes.
And you know what, Jesus is

preparing so many wonderful
things for us that it will be

worth it. So let's
be faithful to Jesus.

the ultimate denials, I would
say, in all of history. Today's

Jesus was faithfully following
the plan of salvation, the plan

were sleeping again, and we pick
up the story in Mark 14. Now we

know what's coming because
I kind of spilled the beans a

little bit last week, right?
Mark 14 says in verses 42 and 43

Rise, let us be going.
See my betrayer is at hand.

And immediately while He was
still speaking, Judas, one of

the 12, with a great multitude
with swords and clubs came from

the chief priests and the
scribes and the elders. Just

like that immediately it
happened. Immediately is one

of Mark's the writer's favorite
words. We notice that in his

gospel. Now as the crowd came
Jesus stepped out in front of

His disciples as if to shield
them and He said something that

was really important. And
we find that in John, we'll be

flipping back and forth
with all the gospels today.

John 18 verses 4-6: And Jesus
therefore knowing all things

that would come upon Him went
forward and said to them, Whom

are you seeking? And they
answered, Well Jesus of Nazareth

Jesus said to them, I am He.
And Judas who betrayed Him also

stood with them. Now when He

back and they fell to the ground
Why would they fall to the

ground? Right? Well at just that
moment the powerful angel who

had come to comfort Jesus, the
one who had taken Satan's place

in heaven as the angel at the
right hand of God passed between

Jesus and the mob and the
brightness of his presence and

of Jesus made them all faint
with fear. They all fell down as

if dead. And at this point, once
again, Jesus could have escaped.

And yet, verse 7 says, Again He
asked them, Who are you seeking?

And again they said Jesus of
Nazareth and He answered I have

told you, I am He. Therefore if

way. To the very end, he was
looking out for others and for

His disciples well-being.
That the same might be fulfilled

which He spoke of those whom you

as was the decided-upon
sign Judas did something that's

absolutely detestable. He said
now His betrayer had given them

a signal saying, Whoever I kiss
He is the one. Seize Him and

lead Him away safely. As soon as
he had come, immediately he went

up to him, um Judas went up
to Jesus, We're reading in Mark
00:11:56.88\00:12:00.52
chapter 14 verse 45, he said
Rabbi, Rabbi and kissed Him.
00:12:00.55\00:12:04.92
Now that sounds really gross
right? But culturally it was
00:12:04.95\00:12:08.66
quite normal in several cultures
even that I know of or have
00:12:08.69\00:12:13.09
friends in it's very culturally
appropriate when you meet
00:12:13.13\00:12:16.77
someone to do the kiss on the
side of the cheek, You know what
00:12:16.80\00:12:20.47
I'm talking about, like kiss,
kiss, and that's very normal and
00:12:20.50\00:12:23.54
guys do it, girls do it to
everyone. It's just like a hug.

The same idea when you meet
someone. So that was the kind of
00:12:28.34\00:12:30.71
kiss we're talking about. And
that was the signal to the crowd
00:12:30.75\00:12:35.02
that this was the one that
they were to take. Now Jesus had

already said, I am He, right?
But Judas went through with his
00:12:38.15\00:12:43.16
end of the deal and that was to
identify Jesus to the others in
00:12:43.19\00:12:48.20
the crowd. And sure enough
that's what happened. And the
00:12:48.23\00:12:53.07
disciples, they were ready
to fight. In fact, Matthew says
00:12:53.10\00:12:56.77
he tells the next part of
the story, Matthew 26 verse 52:
00:12:56.81\00:13:04.58
26:52, here we go. But Jesus
said to them...Oh. And suddenly
00:13:04.61\00:13:10.89
those who were with Jesus
stretched out his hand and drew
00:13:10.92\00:13:13.15
his sword and struck the servant
of the high priest and cut off
00:13:13.19\00:13:15.92
his ear. Do you know who that
was? Maybe you know your Bible
00:13:15.96\00:13:20.13
trivia. It was Peter. Peter
reached out and struck off the
00:13:20.16\00:13:23.73
servant's ear. The servant's
name was Malcus and Peter cut
00:13:23.77\00:13:28.90
off his ear. But Jesus said
to him, Put your sword in it's
00:13:28.94\00:13:31.61
place for all those who live by
the sword, oh I'm sorry, for all
00:13:31.64\00:13:36.91
who take the sword will perish
by the sword. Or do you not
00:13:36.95\00:13:39.75
think that I cannot now pray to
my Father and He will provide me
00:13:39.78\00:13:42.35
with more than 12 legions
of angels? How then could the
00:13:42.38\00:13:45.85
scriptures be fulfilled that it
must happen thus. Wow! What did

Jesus do? Dr. Luke tells us
what Jesus did in the situation.

As Malchus is there stunned with
his ear probably in his hand or

on the ground, I don't know
where it was. Maybe one of the

other people picked it up and
gave it to him. I'm not sure.

Peter had cut it clear off.
Luke 22 verse 51 says: And Jesus

answered them and said Permit
even this, so He asked them

please let go of me for a second
right? And He touched his ear

and healed him. Wow! Then
Jesus said to the chief priests,

captains of the temple and the
elders who had come to him, Have

you come out as against a robber
with swords and clubs when I was
00:14:27.06\00:14:30.53
with you daily in the temple and
you did not seize me. But this

is your hour and the power
of darkness. At this time Peter

suggested that maybe they ought
to all run away and so they
00:14:39.31\00:14:42.94
didn't get in trouble as well.
And they did. They wondered why

Jesus would allow this to happen
and with that, they deserted
00:14:48.42\00:14:51.39
their master just as the
prophecy had said. In Mark 14
00:14:51.42\00:14:57.09
verse 50 do you remember what
Jesus had said about that, that
00:14:57.13\00:15:01.06
they would all leave Him. Mark
14 verse 50 says: Then they all
00:15:01.10\00:15:09.77
forsook Him and fled. He was
alone. First, the crowd took Him
00:15:09.80\00:15:15.94
to Annas and he was the former
high priest. He wasn't the
00:15:15.98\00:15:19.75
current high priest. His son-in-
law Caiaphas was the present
00:15:19.78\00:15:22.55
high priest. But they had
this plan. Annas was to say that
00:15:22.58\00:15:25.95
Jesus was the Son of God and the
Jewish council, he was to get
00:15:25.99\00:15:31.13
Jesus to say I'm the Son of
God, right? Then in the Jewish
00:15:31.16\00:15:34.20
council of course that was
worthy of death. Because that
00:15:34.23\00:15:37.33
was blasphemy to this claim that
you were the Son of God. And
00:15:37.37\00:15:41.10
then they hoped also to prove
that Jesus was here to start a
00:15:41.14\00:15:42.94
new kingdom which would get
the Romans involved because they
00:15:42.97\00:15:45.74
would not want a new kingdom
or anyone challenging the Roman
00:15:45.77\00:15:50.21
empire, right? And Jesus wasn't
talking and this was frustrating
00:15:50.25\00:15:56.22
Annas because he was trying to
get Him to admit it, right? And
00:15:56.25\00:15:59.45
in John 18 it says, verse 12,
Then the detachment of troops
00:15:59.49\00:16:04.63
and the captain and officers
of the Jews arrested Jesus and
00:16:04.66\00:16:07.40
bound Him. They led Him away
to Annas first for he was the
00:16:07.43\00:16:10.80
father-in-law of Caiaphas who
was the high priest that year.
It was Caiaphas who
00:16:10.83\00:16:14.50
had advised the Jews that it
would be expedient that one man
00:16:14.54\00:16:18.14
should die for the people. So
they had this whole plan. Their
00:16:18.17\00:16:22.51
whole family was in on it
weren't they? And in verse 19
00:16:22.54\00:16:25.75
it says, The high priest then
asked Jesus about His disciples
00:16:25.78\00:16:29.25
and His doctrine. I Jesus said
to him, I spoke openly to the
00:16:29.28\00:16:33.09
world. I always taught in
the synagogue and in the temple
00:16:33.12\00:16:36.26
where the Jews always meet and
in secret, I have said nothing.
00:16:36.29\00:16:40.53
Why do you ask me? Ask those
who have heard me and what I
00:16:40.56\00:16:45.10
said. Indeed they know. Right?
They were trying to trick Him.
00:16:45.13\00:16:48.14
And then He said these things.
One of the officers who stood
00:16:48.17\00:16:51.44
by struck Jesus with the palm of
his hand saying, Do you answer
00:16:51.47\00:16:54.44
the high priest like that?
And Jesus answered him If I have
00:16:54.48\00:16:57.31
spoken evil, bear witness of the
evil, but if well, why do you
00:16:57.35\00:17:00.82
strike me? Then Annas sent
Him bound to Caiaphas the high
00:17:00.85\00:17:05.49
priest.
00:17:05.52\00:17:07.96
And he knew that what Jesus had
said was true. He couldn't argue
00:17:07.99\00:17:10.76
with that and he knew that if
they started this trial at night
00:17:10.79\00:17:14.36
time, they were breaking their
own rules. So he decided to
00:17:14.40\00:17:17.73
push Him on to Caiaphas the high
priest. Annas thought followed
00:17:17.77\00:17:21.74
along. And the council members
soon arrived and the trial began
00:17:21.77\00:17:25.27
They paid witnesses to lie about
Jesus. Can you imagine? But when
00:17:25.31\00:17:30.75
you're telling a lie, when
you're telling the truth your
00:17:30.78\00:17:33.08
stories should match, right?
But the lies started to lead to
00:17:33.11\00:17:36.02
confusion because one person
said one thing, one person's
00:17:36.05\00:17:38.92
story didn't match that and
it wasn't making much sense. The
00:17:38.95\00:17:42.19
Sanhedrin, or the Jewish court,
that were trying Jesus were
00:17:42.22\00:17:45.06
trying Jesus were starting to
get a little frustrated because
00:17:45.09\00:17:48.16
it wasn't going as well as they
would have liked, right? And
00:17:48.20\00:17:51.90
Jesus was quiet, didn't say
anything. In Matthew 26 verse 63
00:17:51.93\00:17:56.37
it says: 26:63- But Jesus
kept silent and the high priest
00:17:56.40\00:18:01.41
answered and said to him. I put
you under oath by the Living God
00:18:01.44\00:18:05.21
Tell us if you are the Christ
the Son of God. He wanted Him to
00:18:05.25\00:18:09.88
have to answer the question,
right? And Jesus said to him,
00:18:09.92\00:18:11.82
It is as you said. Nevertheless
I say to you hereafter you will
00:18:11.85\00:18:15.69
see the Son of Man sitting
at the right hand of Power and
00:18:15.72\00:18:18.03
coming in the clouds of heaven.
Huhh! Caiaphas was terrified. He
00:18:18.06\00:18:23.60
saw the judgment day before his
eyes. He knew that Jesus would
00:18:23.63\00:18:27.10
be the one who was judging him
and he feigned shock, huhhh, he
00:18:27.14\00:18:31.27
acted surprised even though he
wasn't and he tore His priestly
00:18:31.31\00:18:34.34
garments, his symbolic garments
that had so many messages that
00:18:34.38\00:18:38.21
pointed to Jesus sewn into
them. He tore them in disdain.
00:18:38.25\00:18:43.52
And verse 65 says, tore his
clothes saying, you have spoken
00:18:43.55\00:18:47.36
blasphemy. What further need
have we of witnesses. Look now,
00:18:47.39\00:18:50.56
you have heard His blasphemy.
What do you think? And they
00:18:50.59\00:18:52.79
answered and said, He is
deserving of death. Their plan
00:18:52.83\00:18:56.56
was going right like they wanted
it to. Now they couldn't judge
00:18:56.60\00:19:04.47
at night, that was the rule, and
so they were going to convene in
00:19:04.51\00:19:06.78
the daylight and in the meantime
they took Jesus to the guard
00:19:06.81\00:19:09.04
room and did despicable things
to Him. They struck Him and used
00:19:09.08\00:19:13.28
a whip and whipped Him and
treated Him horribly. Peter and
00:19:13.31\00:19:17.19
John had come back after they'd
all run away in the garden. John
00:19:17.22\00:19:21.59
was actually known to be a
disciple of Jesus. He was pretty
00:19:21.62\00:19:24.29
well known and they allowed him
to watch hoping that he would
00:19:24.33\00:19:27.26
change his mind and back them
I suppose. Peter waited in the
00:19:27.30\00:19:30.40
courtyard by the fire trying to
blend in with everyone else and
00:19:30.43\00:19:33.00
not be noticed. But three
different people called him out.
00:19:33.03\00:19:38.81
Three different people, first a
servant girl called him out. In
00:19:38.84\00:19:42.84
Mark 14 it talks about the
servant girl, 14 verse 66 says
00:19:42.88\00:19:47.88
Now Peter was below in
the courtyard and one of the
00:19:47.92\00:19:50.15
servant girls of the high priest
came and when she saw Peter
00:19:50.19\00:19:52.32
warming himself she looked at
him and said, You also were with
00:19:52.35\00:19:55.26
Jesus of Nazareth. But he denied
it saying, I neither know nor
00:19:55.29\00:20:00.16
understand what you're saying.
And he went out on the porch and
00:20:00.20\00:20:03.13
a rooster crowed one
time. Another person saw him. In
00:20:03.16\00:20:09.50
Matthew chapter 26 verse 71 it
says, And when he had gone out
00:20:09.54\00:20:14.38
the gateway another girl saw him
and said to those who were with
00:20:14.41\00:20:17.98
him, This fellow is with Jesus
of Nazareth. But again he denied
00:20:18.01\00:20:22.12
with an oath, that means he
swore, I do not know the man.
00:20:22.15\00:20:26.35
Wow! And finally a relative
of Malcus, interestingly enough,
00:20:26.39\00:20:31.96
the one who had gotten his ear
chopped off, also said to Peter,
00:20:31.99\00:20:35.70
in John 18, let's look that
up quickly, John 18 verse 26 it
00:20:35.73\00:20:42.87
says, One of the servants of the
high priest, a relative of him
00:20:42.90\00:20:46.68
whose ear Peter had cut off said
Did I not see you in the garden
00:20:46.71\00:20:49.74
with Him and Peter denied
it again and immediately the
00:20:49.78\00:20:52.71
rooster crowed the second time.
Two times. At that point the
00:20:52.75\00:20:58.39
trial kind of paused and Jesus
looked directly at Peter, not
00:20:58.42\00:21:02.62
with an I-told-you-so look
but with a look of sorrow, pity,
00:21:02.66\00:21:07.60
compassion and forgiveness.
At that point, Peter fled to
00:21:07.63\00:21:12.73
Gethsemane. He ran away as
fast as he could. He had let the
00:21:12.77\00:21:16.47
Savior down. He went to the same
spot where Jesus had struggled
00:21:16.50\00:21:20.84
with His mission. How could
Jesus ever forgive him? Do you
00:21:20.88\00:21:25.85
think Jesus could? Hmm. Sobering
thought. We'll continue our
