Now hundreds of years before the
Passover ceremony was started.

reminded the people of God's Son

the new ceremony that Jesus

Olives Jesus gave them a warning

It was on the western slope on

they saw a grape vine. And Jesus

always sharing lessons of wisdom
with them to the very end says

something about the grapevine.
In John 15, let's flip over

there. John 15 verse 5:

He said to them, I am the vine
and you are the branches. He who

abides in me [or stays in me]
and I in him bears much fruit.

For without Me you can do
nothing. But if anyone does not

abide in me, he is cast out as a
branch that is withered and they

gather them and throw them
in the fire and they are burned.

What a valuable lesson. We
must depend on Jesus just like a

branch depends on the big vine
for the nutrients to get there.

Right? And when we do that
we will bear fruit for Jesus.

Now they reached the garden of
Gethsemane and the disciples, it

was a familiar place for them
because they had actually slept

there were a few nights while
Jesus had prayed in the past.

But this time it felt really
different. It was like an extra

darkness than the darkness of
night there Jesus had changed.

It was like He was carrying
something heavy. But when they

looked He wasn't carrying
anything physically. He
staggered. He could hardly walk.

He was making groaning noises.
And He almost fell a couple of

times if they hadn't held Him
up and He had this overwhelming

spirit of sadness come over Him.
This perplexed the disciples and

as He left the disciples at the
entrance of the garden He took

three disciples, Peter, James
and John, into the garden with

Him. Matthew tells us
what happens next. Matthew 26.

I said the word somber earlier.
Do you know what somber means?

It means really serious. Right?
And really, I guess, sad would
00:12:22.04\00:12:28.44
be another synonym for somber.
Matthew 26 verses 36 and 37:

Then Jesus came with them to
a place called Gethsemane and He

said to His disciples, sit here
while I go and pray over there.

And He took with him Peter
and two of the sons of Zebedee,

James and John. And He
began to be sorrowful and deeply

distressed. He'd asked all his
disciples one simple request.

Sit here while I go and pray
over there. [Right?] Then He

said to them, My soul is
exceedingly sorrowful even to

death. Stay here
and watch with me.

Pray with me, watch with me. He
needed is friends now more than

ever. Mark adds
in Mark 14 verse 35:

He went a little farther and
fell on the ground and prayed

that if it were possible
the hour might pass from Him.

Have you ever felt guilty
before I know I have. Guilt is a
00:13:24.47\00:13:31.41
feeling when you've done
something wrong and you know it
00:13:31.44\00:13:34.84
and maybe you haven't admitted
it yet. Now there's a lot of
00:13:34.88\00:13:38.21
reasons why humans should feel
guilty. Right? We make a lot of
00:13:38.25\00:13:40.62
mistakes on a regular basis. At
least I'm speaking for myself.
00:13:40.65\00:13:44.35
But Jesus was experiencing
a different kind of guilt than
00:13:44.39\00:13:48.42
anyone has ever experienced or
will ever experience. Jesus, the
00:13:48.46\00:13:53.40
only, only ever sinless human
being was now carrying all of my
00:13:53.43\00:13:58.60
guilt, all of your guilt, all
of the guilt of everyone who has
00:13:58.63\00:14:02.64
ever lived and ever will live
and all of their sins as well so
00:14:02.67\00:14:06.21
not just the wrongs that they've
done but the feeling of guilt
00:14:06.24\00:14:09.91
that you get from those
sins. He was feeling all of that
00:14:09.94\00:14:14.68
pressing down on His heart and
soul. In Mark 14 verse 33 and 34
00:14:14.72\00:14:21.19
it says: And He took Peter,
James and John with Him and He
00:14:21.22\00:14:27.73
began to be troubled and deeply
distressed. He said to them,
00:14:27.76\00:14:29.83
My soul is exceedingly sorrowful
even unto death. Stay here and
00:14:29.86\00:14:32.43
watch.

He asked them again, stay
there and watch. What Jesus went

through that night, we will
never completely understand.

The feeling of separation from
His Father that is created by

sin and guilt; the wages of sin
are death. He was feeling that
00:14:42.68\00:14:46.61
separation of death even thought
He hadn't actually experienced

it yet. And it would have killed
anyone else. Had not God given

Him extra strength He wouldn't
have survived this spiritual and

emotional torture that he was
going through. For hundreds of

years lambs had been sacrificed
and those lambs represented

Jesus. They represented what
he was going to go through in
00:15:09.87\00:15:12.57
the next day. And back then the
people would confess their sins
00:15:12.61\00:15:17.85
upon the head of the lamb
and then that lamb would take on
00:15:17.88\00:15:21.08
their sin and then would be
sacrificed and would die their
00:15:21.12\00:15:26.89
death that they deserved.
Now all the sins were placed on

Jesus just like He is the
sacrificial lamb, the Lamb of

God. Jesus, the human, once
again, with no sin of His own,

He took our sins on Him. The
wages of sin is death. Our wages

We deserve death and yet He
took that upon Himself. He felt

totally alone and cut off from
God. He was going to be killed

in our place. Mark
continues and says:

He went a little farther and
fell on the ground and prayed

Nevertheless not what I will but

Three times Jesus asked his
disciples to watch and pray with

to find them sleeping. He said,

The spirit is willing but the
flesh is weak. They could hardly

recognize Jesus as He came
back the third time. His whole

demeanor had changed and it
actually says there was blood

coming from the pores. The pores
are little holes in your skin

where sweat would normally come
out of, but blood was coming out

And they were so confused. What

was Jesus going through. And yet
they couldn't stay up and pray

with Him. Hmm. Satan during this
time was also tempting Jesus to

give up. I don't know if we
can even half or quarter imagine

what Jesus was going through
during this time. And of course

Satan was right there with his
angels trying to push Jesus over

the brink, trying to push Him
past His limits. At this point

Jesus could have chosen to give
up the mission and to change His

mind and to not save us and to
not die for us. He could desert

the mission. He could walk away.
He didn't deserve to die. The

sins and the guilt He felt were
not His own. He longed for a

different way to save us.
He longed for another way and

that's why He asked God, any
other way, can you take this cup

away from me. When He came
the third time and found them

sleeping, He said to Peter,
Simon, why are you sleeping?

Could you not watch one hour?
Could you not? Are you still

resting and sleeping. It
is enough. The hour has come.

Behold the Son of man is
being betrayed into the hands of

Very soon the betrayer would be

Before the angry mob met

became like great drops of blood
falling the ground. When He rose

up from His pray and had come
to his disciples, he found them

sleeping from sorrow. Then
He said to them, Why were you

sleeping? Rise and pray
lest you enter into temptation.

Do you hear that now? It sounds
like there's a crowd coming this

way. Jesus heard it too and
so did His disciples. Jesus knew

that Judas was on the way
with his posse, probably some

soldiers and the Jewish leaders
to come and arrest Jesus. The

disciples were kind of like in
a daze, you know like when you

just wake up and they didn't
understand exactly what was

happening. But Jesus had come to
the decision point and you know

what He chose? He chose you.
He chose me. He chose anyone in

the world who is willing to
accept His gift. His life in

exchange for ours. Wow! Jesus
heard the betrayer and the crowd

coming to get Him and He could
have run. He could have had the

disciples fight. He could have
done any of those things and

yet He chose us. Powerful isn't
it? Jesus asked us to continue

to watch and pray lest we
fall into temptation as well.

He wants us to be there and
He longs for us to accept His

sacrifice in place of our own.
What an amazing Savior! He loves

in we had to escape and the only
