There's not a lot of us but we still want to make a 00:06:01.79\00:06:05.29 difference for other kids in the world. Our parents got an ADRA 00:06:05.33\00:06:09.23 Kids gift catalog in the mail. And when we saw it we knew we 00:06:09.26\00:06:13.13 wanted to help. The catalog had a few mission projects so we 00:06:13.17\00:06:18.11 chose chickens and it said "Can you imagine your 00:06:18.14\00:06:22.51 whole family living 00:06:22.54\00:06:23.88 on just one dollar and fifty cents a day? You can probably 00:06:23.91\00:06:27.15 find that much change in between your sofa cushions right now. 00:06:27.18\00:06:29.88 There are many reasons that families must survive on so 00:06:29.92\00:06:33.86 little. But you can make things easier by choosing this gift. 00:06:33.89\00:06:37.49 and their eggs can be sold at the market so families have more 00:06:37.53\00:06:40.40 money for food, clothes and other necessities." We also 00:06:40.43\00:06:46.03 chose goats and it said "Many children live on farms and help 00:06:46.07\00:06:51.97 their parents take care of farm animals like goats. These goats 00:06:52.01\00:06:55.91 provide milk and cheese. The yummy cheese can be eaten or 00:06:55.94\00:06:59.71 sold at the market year round so that no one in the family 00:06:59.75\00:07:03.65 ever goes hungry. As the goats have babies, the farm will start 00:07:03.69\00:07:08.39 to grow. If you team up with your friends and each buy a 00:07:08.42\00:07:12.26 share you can get a family of goats." 00:07:12.29\00:07:16.46 Last we chose wells and it said "You can help dig a well in many 00:07:16.50\00:07:23.00 countries. Kids don't have clean water to drink so sometimes they 00:07:23.04\00:07:30.81 have to dig in the ground for hours to find enough water to 00:07:30.85\00:07:35.55 fill one bucket. In other places kids have to drink dirty water, 00:07:35.58\00:07:40.99 yuk, and it often makes them sick. You can be a hero who 00:07:41.02\00:07:46.19 gives kids clean drinking water so they can stay healthy and 00:07:46.23\00:07:51.33 hydrated." Well we got right to work. Each of us participated 00:07:51.37\00:07:57.41 however we could and by the end we had made a poster, laminated 00:07:57.44\00:08:01.71 the different missions and taped it to the poster board. Then we 00:08:01.74\00:08:06.61 hung decorated index cards on 00:08:06.65\00:08:08.32 mason jars to collect money for each mission. Last we asked 00:08:08.35\00:08:12.85 permission to set it out in the church lobby. After a few short 00:08:12.89\00:08:16.93 weeks we had collected $345.60. That's more money than we 00:08:16.96\00:08:23.33 thought we could ever collect. We had enough for almost eight 00:08:23.37\00:08:27.67 chickens, four goats and $160 towards a well. We praise God 00:08:27.70\00:08:38.45 that he has missions that even us kids can help with. 00:08:38.48\00:08:42.98 ¤ ¤ 00:08:43.02\00:09:03.44 (Miss Michelle) One of the things that I love to learn 00:09:03.47\00:09:06.17 about is a certain part of the body. Maybe you can guess what 00:09:06.21\00:09:09.44 it is. Hmm. I think you can. It's the brain. The brain is an 00:09:09.48\00:09:15.82 amazing organ and it is so cool to learn about it. There's 00:09:15.85\00:09:21.56 different parts and they all have such important jobs. Have 00:09:21.59\00:09:25.73 you ever wondered what's inside God's brain? What kind of 00:09:25.76\00:09:30.23 thoughts does God think? Today we're going to talk about that. 00:09:30.27\00:09:34.47 Let's pray. 00:09:34.50\00:09:35.84 Dear heavenly Father, we thank you for loving us. We ask that 00:09:35.87\00:09:38.17 you are here with us right now as we dive into your word and 00:09:38.21\00:09:42.01 read a very interesting story that doesn't really match how 00:09:42.04\00:09:45.68 our brains think. We thank you for sending your Holy Spirit. 00:09:45.71\00:09:49.22 In your name we pray, Amen. 00:09:49.25\00:09:50.62 You see, humans think very differently than God, especially 00:09:50.65\00:09:56.19 since sin. Right? We were created in God's image and God 00:09:56.22\00:09:59.49 wanted our brains to think just like His does. And yet, God 00:09:59.53\00:10:04.07 thinks different thoughts than we do. What kind of thoughts 00:10:04.10\00:10:07.47 does God think? Isaiah 55 verses 8 and 9 says: 00:10:07.50\00:10:11.81 For my thoughts are not your thoughts nor are your ways my 00:10:11.84\00:10:19.15 ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the 00:10:19.18\00:10:23.12 earth so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than 00:10:23.15\00:10:27.62 your thoughts. Then He also says in the next book of the Bible, 00:10:27.66\00:10:32.33 Jeremiah, this is one of my favorites, maybe it's one of 00:10:32.36\00:10:35.80 your favorites as well. In Jeremiah 29 verse 11, what does 00:10:35.83\00:10:40.24 He think about us? For I know the thoughts that I think toward 00:10:40.27\00:10:44.17 you, says the Lord; thoughts of peace and not of evil to give 00:10:44.21\00:10:49.14 you a future and a hope. The whole time that Jesus was on 00:10:49.18\00:10:54.18 earth He was trying to show us what God was like, how God 00:10:54.22\00:10:58.79 thinks, how Jesus thinks. And in today's story He really threw us 00:10:58.82\00:11:05.06 a curve ball in telling a story that helps us understand that 00:11:05.09\00:11:09.36 and yet confuses us because we don't understand completely how 00:11:09.40\00:11:13.54 God thinks. You see, back then we know that the Pharisees were 00:11:13.57\00:11:17.57 about the rules, rules, rules. Jesus didn't obey all of their 00:11:17.61\00:11:21.38 made up rules, made up human rules. He obeyed his heavenly 00:11:21.41\00:11:24.15 Father's rules. They ruled Him out as the Messiah because He 00:11:24.18\00:11:28.12 didn't obey their rules. The rich young ruler also walked 00:11:28.15\00:11:32.42 away because he didn't agree with what Jesus was asking him 00:11:32.45\00:11:36.42 to do. And the disciples were even confused about Jesus and 00:11:36.46\00:11:40.93 His thought towards them. In Mark chapter 9, Mark chapter 9 00:11:40.96\00:11:47.07 verses 33 and 34 it says, Mark 9:33 and 34: 00:11:47.10\00:11:54.08 Then he came to Capernaum and when he was in the house he 00:11:54.11\00:11:57.25 asked then, What was it that you disputed among yourselves in the 00:11:57.28\00:12:00.48 road, and they kept silent for on the road they had been 00:12:00.52\00:12:03.02 disputing among themselves over who would be the greatest. 00:12:03.05\00:12:06.22 They were more worried about who would be at His right hand when 00:12:06.25\00:12:09.52 He conquered the Romans, which wasn't even going to happen, 00:12:09.56\00:12:12.36 then they were about how God thinks and about what God cares 00:12:12.39\00:12:16.56 about. So Jesus told this story. This story is found in Matthew 00:12:16.60\00:12:21.27 chapter 20, Matthew chapter 20 and I brought something to help 00:12:21.30\00:12:28.94 tell this story that we're going to be using. Maybe you've 00:12:28.98\00:12:32.35 learned about it in school. Maybe you like digital better, 00:12:32.38\00:12:36.05 but I think that analog is important to learn as well. 00:12:36.08\00:12:39.15 You see there was a rich farmer and he had a large vineyard. 00:12:39.19\00:12:43.49 What do they grow in vineyards? They grow grapes and we have a 00:12:43.53\00:12:49.03 lot of vineyards around where I live. Not as many maybe as in 00:12:49.06\00:12:51.73 California or maybe other places in different countries but here 00:12:51.77\00:12:55.84 we have quite a few vineyards around. And he had so many 00:12:55.87\00:13:02.81 grapes that he needed to hire extra help to harvest those 00:13:02.84\00:13:06.18 grapes. And we'll pick up the story in Matthew 20 and verse 1: 00:13:06.21\00:13:09.68 For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out 00:13:09.72\00:13:13.15 early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. Now 00:13:13.19\00:13:17.19 when he had agreed with the laborers to a denarius a day he 00:13:17.23\00:13:21.53 sent then into his vineyard. A denarius; so one coin. 00:13:21.56\00:13:25.33 A denarius back then would have the equivalent of about a day's 00:13:25.37\00:13:28.17 labor, a day's worth of labor. So today's minimum wage is 00:13:28.20\00:13:32.27 right around $7.25 or so. If you multiply that by how many hours 00:13:32.31\00:13:35.24 you work you would find out how much that would be in today's 00:13:35.28\00:13:40.35 money. And they thought that sounded like a fair deal because 00:13:40.38\00:13:42.58 back then to get a denarius for one day's labor was fair. 00:13:42.62\00:13:46.22 So they went to work in the vineyard picking the grapes. 00:13:46.25\00:13:49.96 Verse 3 continues the story: And he went out at about about the 00:13:49.99\00:13:54.73 third hour. Now this is a little confusing to Miss Michelle 00:13:54.76\00:13:57.30 because the third hour I might think 3 o'clock but then I think 00:13:57.33\00:14:01.30 3 a.m. That doesn't make any sense. Right? No one's up at 00:14:01.34\00:14:05.34 3 a.m. and it says that he already hired people early in 00:14:05.37\00:14:08.78 the morning in the third hour. So early in the morning was 00:14:08.81\00:14:12.61 probably, pardon me, my minute hand is giving me trouble, was 00:14:12.65\00:14:16.42 probably around 6 o'clock. So small hand pointing to the 6. 00:14:16.45\00:14:19.95 The third hour would have been three hours after the work day 00:14:19.99\00:14:23.39 started. So that would be 7, 8, 9 o'clock. So 9 a.m. the farmer 00:14:23.43\00:14:29.86 went out and he realized that... 00:14:29.90\00:14:33.20 In the third hour he saw others standing out in the market place 00:14:33.23\00:14:36.71 and he said to them, You also go into the vineyard and whatever 00:14:36.74\00:14:39.91 is right I will give you. 00:14:39.94\00:14:41.38 So they went. Now he didn't tell them how much he was going to 00:14:41.41\00:14:43.65 pay them, did he? They had to trust him that he would make 00:14:43.68\00:14:48.45 fair pay for them. And so they did. He realized that he needed 00:14:48.48\00:14:51.99 more workers; there were so many grapes to pick. Then in verse 5 00:14:52.02\00:14:56.09 it continues: Again in about the sixth hour... So six hour after 00:14:56.12\00:15:00.03 they had started at six would be at noon. So at noon once again 00:15:00.06\00:15:03.63 he went out and asked more people who were standing there 00:15:03.67\00:15:05.83 to come and help him work. And again at the ninth hour which 00:15:05.87\00:15:09.10 would be three more hours, right? One, two three, at 00:15:09.14\00:15:11.24 3 o'clock in the afternoon he asked again for more people to 00:15:11.27\00:15:15.84 come and help him and he didn't tell them how much he was going 00:15:15.88\00:15:18.85 pay them. It says:... Again he went in the sixth and the ninth 00:15:18.88\00:15:22.28 hour and did likewise and,... we're in verse 6, and at about 00:15:22.32\00:15:26.12 the 11th hour he went out and found others standing idle. 00:15:26.15\00:15:28.69 I don't mean they were just standing around, they weren't 00:15:28.72\00:15:30.79 moving. If your car is idling it means it's staying in one place. 00:15:30.83\00:15:33.53 So once again we're to the 11th hour. So we started at six so 00:15:33.56\00:15:38.63 let's count 11, ready, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11. So 00:15:38.67\00:15:43.00 this is 5 o'clock in the evening he still realized that they 00:15:43.04\00:15:47.24 weren't going to finish in time and he needed more help to push 00:15:47.28\00:15:50.55 through to finish that day. And so at the 11th hour he went and 00:15:50.58\00:15:55.92 hired more people and said to them, Why have you been standing 00:15:55.95\00:15:59.29 here idle all day? And they said to him, Because no one has hired 00:15:59.32\00:16:02.42 us. And he said to them, Well you also go into the vineyard 00:16:02.46\00:16:05.26 and whatever is right you will receive. So when evening had 00:16:05.29\00:16:09.26 come the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, Call the 00:16:09.30\00:16:13.10 laborers and give them their wages. Okay, this was natural. 00:16:13.13\00:16:16.64 They would pay as they went so at the end of that day, it was 00:16:16.67\00:16:20.41 time to pay them what they were due. Okay, this is where the 00:16:20.44\00:16:26.41 story gets interesting. Do you like stories with a surprise 00:16:26.45\00:16:29.18 ending? Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I like to be 00:16:29.22\00:16:32.92 able to guess what the ending is but I don't think, unless 00:16:32.95\00:16:35.09 you've heard the story before, you would guess it correctly. 00:16:35.12\00:16:37.03 So what does he do? Well he tells his servant there he says 00:16:37.06\00:16:44.03 to him... And we should begin with the last and go to the 00:16:44.07\00:16:51.34 first. Sound familiar? Jesus has said that before. Right? And so 00:16:51.37\00:16:56.38 when those who came who were hired at the 11th hour came they 00:16:56.41\00:17:00.92 received a denarius. And the people who'd been working all 00:17:00.95\00:17:05.92 day thought, well that's interesting. And then when they 00:17:05.95\00:17:10.39 received it, or no, let's back up. And then when the first came 00:17:10.43\00:17:14.96 they supposed that they would receive more. They thought well 00:17:15.00\00:17:17.40 if everybody else, the people who came at 3 p.m., noon, the 00:17:17.43\00:17:20.50 people who came at 9, if they all got a denarius, which is 00:17:20.54\00:17:23.54 what it says, then we must be getting a little more. I mean we 00:17:23.57\00:17:27.04 worked really hard, 12-hour day, 6 to 6. But here's what happened 00:17:27.08\00:17:33.78 When the first came, we're in verse 10, they supposed they 00:17:33.82\00:17:36.85 would receive more and they likewise received each a 00:17:36.89\00:17:40.02 denarius, which is what had been agreed upon. But they were a 00:17:40.06\00:17:43.93 little frustrated. When they received it they complained 00:17:43.96\00:17:47.60 against the land owner saying, These men who worked only one 00:17:47.63\00:17:52.43 hour and you made them equal to us who have born the labor of 00:17:52.47\00:17:56.10 the heat all day long. But the land owner answered them, 00:17:56.14\00:18:00.54 And he answered one of them and said, Friend, I'm doing you no 00:18:00.58\00:18:06.72 wrong. Did you not agree to work for the day for me for a 00:18:06.75\00:18:10.72 denarius? Take what is yours and go your way. I wish to give to 00:18:10.75\00:18:20.06 this last man the same as to you Is it not lawful for me to do 00:18:20.10\00:18:25.10 what I wish with my own things? Or is your eye evil because I am 00:18:25.13\00:18:30.91 good. Whoa! A picture into how God's brain thinks. And this is 00:18:30.94\00:18:37.05 how Jesus ended this story. So the last will be first and 00:18:37.08\00:18:42.45 the first will be last. For many are called but few are chosen. 00:18:42.48\00:18:48.52 What does this mean, Miss Michelle? It doesn't make any 00:18:48.56\00:18:52.96 sense. We would get really frustrated if that happened 00:18:52.99\00:18:56.10 to us today. Right. If we worked all day and got paid the same as 00:18:56.13\00:19:00.67 someone who worked for one hour. I bet the workers who started 00:19:00.70\00:19:03.64 later in the day were so glad that they had trusted the 00:19:03.67\00:19:06.91 farmer to be fair with their wages. Here is what I learned 00:19:06.94\00:19:11.11 from this story. No one can ever work hard enough, be good enough 00:19:11.15\00:19:18.29 for God's kingdom. You can work your whole life and you can't do 00:19:18.32\00:19:23.16 it on your own. You see Jesus is showing in this parable that 00:19:23.19\00:19:28.90 no matter how many hours you work, you cannot earn salvation. 00:19:28.93\00:19:33.50 You cannot earn the reward and yet there is only one way to 00:19:33.54\00:19:40.18 earn that, to be able to go to heaven, have eternal life, which 00:19:40.21\00:19:44.45 is like what the wages in this story would represent. And we 00:19:44.48\00:19:47.38 find that way, that one way, in Acts, all throughout the Bible 00:19:47.42\00:19:51.85 obviously, but also in Acts chapter 4 verse 12. Acts chapter 00:19:51.89\00:19:57.39 4 verse 12 says:... Nor is there salvation in any other for there 00:19:57.43\00:20:03.93 is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must 00:20:03.97\00:20:08.97 be saved. Who is that name? Let's hear it, loud in the back, 00:20:09.00\00:20:12.47 Jesus. The only way that we can be saved is through Jesus. 00:20:12.51\00:20:15.91 Acts 16 verse 13 also reiterates or reemphasizes this fact. 00:20:15.94\00:20:21.85 Acts 16 verse 13 says:... Sorry. Acts 16 verse 13:... I think I 00:20:21.88\00:20:29.39 may have written down the wrong Oh here it is. It's verse 31. I 00:20:29.42\00:20:33.36 flipped the numbers. Have you ever done that before? So they 00:20:33.40\00:20:35.80 said: Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, 00:20:35.83\00:20:39.93 you and your household. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. That's 00:20:39.97\00:20:44.44 it folks. Sinless Jesus lived for us. He lived the life that 00:20:44.47\00:20:51.21 we can't and He died the death that we deserve. He died and in 00:20:51.25\00:21:00.52 His death He provided our salvation. Praise God. Glory to 00:21:00.56\00:21:06.53 His name. Isn't it amazing to see inside a little picture of 00:21:06.56\00:21:10.67 what is inside Jesus' brain? And his heart. Right? That he would 00:21:10.70\00:21:16.30 do that for us. That God would make that plan before the 00:21:16.34\00:21:19.41 foundation of the world, before creation, he had a plan to save 00:21:19.44\00:21:22.61 us in case we messed it up, which we did. And you can 00:21:22.64\00:21:27.58 imagine that the disciples and everyone who was listening were 00:21:27.62\00:21:30.32 majorly confused by this story. We could think about this story 00:21:30.35\00:21:34.46 for a really long time and still not completely understand the 00:21:34.49\00:21:37.86 amazing love that Jesus has for us. It's not fair, but that's 00:21:37.89\00:21:41.96 the amazing thing about it. For by grace you have been saved 00:21:42.00\00:21:45.67 through faith. Ephesians 2 verse 8. Last week we talked about what happened to 00:24:35.60\00:24:40.91 a very close friend of ours in the mission field. As we were 00:24:40.94\00:24:46.11 trying to help him, my father, in the process, got kidnapped. 00:24:46.15\00:24:49.28 Now we decided that things weren't looking good because we 00:24:49.32\00:24:54.06 hadn't seen our father. So we decided to pray. And we prayed 00:24:54.09\00:24:58.49 and we said, Dear Lord, Please whatever is going on help our 00:24:58.53\00:25:03.63 dad to be okay. And you know what my friends? God listens 00:25:03.67\00:25:08.60 and He can even talk to kidnappers. Now we didn't know 00:25:08.64\00:25:11.97 this but they were driving my father down to the river. And 00:25:12.01\00:25:15.94 whenever they would drive you down to the river they would 00:25:15.98\00:25:18.08 take all your money and they will throw you out and hurt you 00:25:18.11\00:25:21.32 really bad. So we prayed and we said Lord please and just at 00:25:21.35\00:25:26.52 that moment God started to impress upon the head kidnapper 00:25:26.55\00:25:30.63 that if he was going to touch my father he was going to mess with 00:25:30.66\00:25:35.86 God and things were not going to look good for him. So he turned 00:25:35.90\00:25:40.44 to the other people that were in the car that were kidnapping my 00:25:40.47\00:25:43.61 dad and he says, You guys, we cannot touch this person because 00:25:43.64\00:25:49.04 this person is a man of God. And at that moment someone of the 00:25:49.08\00:25:53.35 people that were there in the car, No way, we never do this. 00:25:53.38\00:25:56.95 We always finish the job.
