Today's story is called Two Rich
Men Choose. Two Rich Men Choose.

Our first rich man that we're
talking about is one that you've

probably heard the story before.
In fact, you probably have sung

this story before. Someone was
a wee little man. That's right,

Zacchaeus. And we know several
things about Zacchaeus. He lived
00:09:24.93\00:09:28.10
in Jericho and he was quite
wealthy and he was quite short,
00:09:28.13\00:09:32.57
which is a synonym for wee. He
had no friends. That sounds like
00:09:32.60\00:09:37.44
a sad life. Right? And it was
because he worked for the Romans
00:09:37.47\00:09:41.54
Who were the Romans? Now if
we remember all the way back to
00:09:41.58\00:09:45.01
when we were learning about
Daniel you'll remember that he
00:09:45.05\00:09:47.42
had a dream, well the king had
the dream about the image; the
00:09:47.45\00:09:51.95
head of gold, the chest of
silver, the thighs of bronze.

Right? And the legs of iron.
We're all the way down to the

legs of iron and that was Rome.
The Roman empire was who was

ruling over the Jews and over
much of the world at this time.

Because the Romans were in
charge the Jews had to pay them

taxes. Zacchaeus was a tax
collector. In fact, he wasn't

just a tax collector, he was the
chief tax collector which means

all the tax collectors
reported to him. And he had been

dishonest in the past. A lot of
tax collectors got a bad rap for

this. Obviously no one likes...
People usually generally are not

excited about giving their money
away so they don't like paying
00:10:34.26\00:10:36.50
taxes period and then to top
it all off to have to pay more

because people are being
dishonest. Ooo, that's not an

easy pill to swallow. He
had heard about Jesus though

and, this is

also a cool fact, the Jordan
River is actually pretty close

to Jericho and Zacchaeus had
heard John the Baptist, Jesus's

cousin, preach. It was at that
point that he decided to change.

Isn't that amazing. You see in
Luke chapter 3 verses 12 and 13

Luke 3 verses 12 and 13 it says:

The tax collectors also came
to be baptized and said to him,

Teacher, what shall we do. And
he said to them, Collect no more

That's what John the Baptist
said to the tax collectors.

Zacchaeus was among those tax
collectors and he stopped taking

extra. But people were not
convinced that he was an honest

man, that he had made a 180 and
changed his life. He had even

started giving money back to
people and they still questioned

his integrity, whether he was
telling the truth. Zacchaeus had

heard also about Levi Matthew
being chosen as one of Jesus's

12 disciples and did that excite
him because he had hope... He

thought Wow! if Jesus wants a
tax collector to be one of his
00:12:00.48\00:12:03.72
special disciples then maybe
there's hope for me. Zacchaeus
00:12:03.75\00:12:07.82
knew he was a sinner and he was
sorry for real. He was repentant

Now there was a big crowd in
Jerusalem, you see there was a
00:12:13.26\00:12:17.33
feast coming up, I'm sorry,
in Jericho because there was a
00:12:17.37\00:12:19.73
feast coming up in Jerusalem
and people were traveling to
00:12:19.77\00:12:22.30
Jerusalem via Jericho. And there
was also a big crowd because
00:12:22.34\00:12:25.74
Jesus was in town. In Luke
chapter 19 verse 3 we'll go to
00:12:25.77\00:12:31.05
today's story.
Luke 19 verse 3 says:...
00:12:31.08\00:12:33.88
And he sought [he Zacchaeus] to
see who Jesus was but he could
00:12:33.92\00:12:38.89
not because of the crowd
for he was short in stature.
00:12:38.92\00:12:42.12
So that didn't stop him. He
didn't just throw up his hands
00:12:42.16\00:12:46.33
and go home and
feel sorry for himself.
00:12:46.36\00:12:47.93
So he ran ahead and climbed into
a sycamore tree to see Him, for
00:12:47.96\00:12:52.23
he was going to pass that way.
00:12:52.27\00:12:54.30
He ran ahead of Jesus, got
a head start. This is where it
00:12:54.34\00:13:00.08
comes into play. We talked about
this before that Jesus had like
00:13:00.11\00:13:02.94
a sixth sense, we have our
five senses. He had like a sixth
00:13:02.98\00:13:06.15
sense about Him and He knew, He
could sense, when people, when

someone needed Him. So
in verse 5, it says:...

And when Jesus came to the place
he looked up and saw Zacchaeus.

And when he saw him He said to
him, Zacchaeus, make haste and
00:13:18.26\00:13:24.67
come down for today I must stay
at your house. So Zacchaeus made
00:13:24.70\00:13:29.54
haste and came down and
received Jesus joyfully.

He was so excited. Jesus wanted
to stay at his house. He knew
00:13:32.37\00:13:37.38
his name!
00:13:37.41\00:13:38.75
But when they saw it they all
complained saying, [pshh] He has
00:13:38.78\00:13:44.02
gone to be a guest
with a man who is a sinner.

Oh my. I can't believe Jesus
would do that. You see back then

the Jewish priests and rulers
had said that tax collectors

were not allowed in synagogues.
They were sinners, like the
00:13:57.13\00:14:00.60
chief of sinners, right up there
with the worst of them. But with

Jesus as a guest at Zacchaeus's
home they could worship in their
00:14:04.24\00:14:07.91
home. What a special, special
treat to have Jesus visit their
00:14:07.94\00:14:11.91
home. Now Jesus will
never force His love on anyone.
00:14:11.95\00:14:15.02
But Zacchaeus was ready for
Jesus' love. His heart was ready
00:14:15.05\00:14:19.19
And as we remember from last
week's story, do you remember
00:14:19.22\00:14:23.73
our needle? Zacchaeus showed
that anything is possible with
00:14:23.76\00:14:29.46
God. Pshu! Right through the eye
of the needle, because Zacchaeus
00:14:29.50\00:14:33.47
was, in fact, a rich man
who allowed God to change him.

Ah, that's really good news
isn't it? There are amazing rich
00:14:37.61\00:14:43.55
people all over our world who
do so much to further the gospel

and who are kindhearted, give to
others and don't put their money

before their heavenly Father.
It's important to remember that.

And more importantly is
to remember that nothing is

impossible for God. Now I
like this part too. Let's keep

reading to the end of the story.

It says, So, oh so he stopped
right there [Zacchaeus stopped]

and he stood, and he said to the
Lord, Look Lord I will give half

of my goods to the poor and
if I have taken anything from

anyone by false accusation,
[dishonestly], I will restore

fourfold.

So let's say that Zacchaeus had
taken, here's some money, it's

fake money. I had to bring the
fake stuff because my son, coins
00:15:33.46\00:15:37.37
are too small for him so I have
more fake money coins than I
00:15:37.40\00:15:40.84
have real coins. That's kind of
sad to say. But that's all right

Let's say that Zacchaeus had
stolen one nickel from you. Are
00:15:43.54\00:15:50.38
you ready for this one? So if
he had stolen one nickel what's
00:15:50.41\00:15:53.48
fourfold of a nickel. Okay let's
do the math. Four times five
00:15:53.52\00:15:58.25
Right? Instead of giving you
one nickel back, five cents in
00:15:58.29\00:16:00.89
American money he would have
given you 20 cents back which

would be four nickels or how
many dimes? Two dimes. Right?

And in that way he was over
compensating to show that he was

really, really, really sorry
for what he had done. People

couldn't believe their
ears. And let's keep reading...

It's always people who realize
their sin and realize that

they're sinners that can

Let's jump to story number two

about the second rich man
who had to choose. Jesus was

preaching and a person asked him
for a little help with solving a

problem between him and his
brother. You see, God had given

some special rules and one
of them was that when the father
00:17:05.82\00:17:10.33
died the older son would get two
times as much property as the
00:17:10.36\00:17:13.73
other sons. Now to us that
doesn't sound fair. It's not a
00:17:13.76\00:17:16.36
rule that we have today.
Right? But it was part of the
00:17:16.40\00:17:18.93
birthright blessing, something
you could research with your
00:17:18.97\00:17:21.60
family, and it was an important
thing. It was a way to honor the
00:17:21.64\00:17:24.64
first born son. And this son
who was talking with Jesus, he
00:17:24.67\00:17:28.84
thought that his brother had
been unfair in how he had split

up the property and so he came
to complain to Jesus about it

and to ask for his advice.
And this is what Jesus said.

Luke 12 verse 13: That's
the story. All right, we'll keep

Jesus' response in verse 14:

But He said to him, Man who made
me a judge or an arbitrator over

you? And he said to them, Take
heed and beware of covetousness

for one's life does not consist
of the abundance of things he

possesses.

He could see into that man's
heart and in that man's heart He

saw selfishness and covetousness
That means that he wanted the

things that were meant to be his

point Jesus tells a story, a
parable. I love it when Jesus

uses these to illustrate his
point. You see there was a rich

man Jesus said...

who harvested so much food from
his farm that he couldn't get it

into all of his barns. [What
to do. And so in Luke 12 verse

18 and 19 it says...] So the
rich man said to himself I will
00:18:25.30\00:18:28.57
do this. I will pull down all
my barns and build greater barns

and there I will store all my
crops and my goods. And I will

say to my soul, Soul, you have
so many goods laid up for many

years. Take your ease,
eat, drink and be merry.

The rich man didn't even
take into consideration that

everything that we have is
a blessing from God. That food

really belonged to God. And
he didn't think about the poor

people in his community or
in other communities around him

that could have really
benefited from that extra food.

Instead, he was very greedy.
And he couldn't have known what

was coming up.
Here's what was coming up.

But God said to him, Fool this
night your soul will be required

of you, [that meant he was going
to die that night]. Then whose

will those things be which you
have provided. So is he who lays

up treasure for himself
and is not rich toward God.

He was going to die that night.
He didn't know that. And yet he

was only thinking of himself.
Jesus called out the selfishness

in both the brothers and really
in all of us. It's interesting

because we might think, Oh
that's crazy. Why would you tear

down all the barns and build new
ones but I was on a tour once, a

boat tour, in a certain town and
people actually do this. Very

rich people buy these huge
mansions. Maybe they have a big

party, one big party, and then
they tear the whole mansion down

and build one that they
like better. Isn't that crazy?

I thought so. Jesus really
challenges us to think about

once again what's in our
heart. And He asks us to really

contemplate that. Once again,
nothing wrong with being rich,

God blesses us with money.
It's what we do with it and the

attitude of our heart that
matters. We all need to examine

our hearts for selfishness
and covetousness. Selfishness,

thinking only about ourselves
and covetousness, wanting things

that other people have. That's
a good challenge, isn't it?

Boy, it's sometimes hard to even
think about it because there may

be things that we're being
selfish about or coveting today.
