The Poor Rich Man? What a catchy
title. Right? This story is a
00:08:36.54\00:08:41.88
super important one because not
only did one gospel tell this

story; two, three, all four
gospels told this story about
00:08:46.15\00:08:50.49
this young man. And yet, none of
them tell us what his name was,
00:08:50.53\00:08:54.86
although we do know some
interesting facts about him.
00:08:54.90\00:08:57.80
You see, he was quite rich.
He was quite young. And he was a
00:08:57.83\00:09:03.37
ruler which probably meant in
those days that he on the Jewish
00:09:03.41\00:09:08.84
council, a member of the Jewish
council. So it was quite a
00:09:08.88\00:09:11.95
prestigious position. Now
he knew about Jesus and he was
00:09:11.98\00:09:17.49
there watching as... Remember
last week we talked about Jesus
00:09:17.52\00:09:21.22
blessing the children. He was
there and he was watching Jesus

interact with those kids
and he thought, Wow, I love that

happiness that they have and I
just wish that Jesus would bless

me too, he was thinking. I think
that a lot of adults at least

are kids at heart and we
want those things too. Right?

Now what did Jesus mean in Luke
18 verse 17? Let's jump there

and see what Jesus was talking
about. Luke 18 verse 17. Now

this is the story that we're
talking about. Picture the rich

young ruler there, the
children and Jesus said:

Assuredly I say to you, whoever
does not receive the kingdom of

God as a little child
will by no means enter it.

What did Jesus mean by that? My,
he wanted to be in God's kingdom

and he knew that the 10
commandments were really

important part of being God's
kingdom and he also followed all

the rules that the Jewish rulers
and leaders and Pharisees and

everybody had made up. He obeyed
them all to the letter. But

something was missing and he
knew that. So he hurried after

Jesus as the children left
because he wanted to ask the

most important question to Jesus
that was on his heart. We're

going to be jumping back and
forth between gospels a little

bit so if you want to you could

is found also in Mark chapter 10

verse 17. And it says:

it's a capital Him so we know

Jesus what can I do so I can
live forever in heaven? Right?

What an important question.
And Jesus right away kind of

understood where he was
coming from. Obviously he really

understood because He was Jesus.
And so he asked him a question.

In verse 18: So Jesus said
to him Why do you call me good?

No one is good but
One and that is God.

Right then and there Jesus
called him out because this rich

young ruler did not believe that
Jesus was the Son of God. You

could tell that in a way. But he
was also questioning it. He was

trying to figure out what
he believed. Only God is good.

And did the young man really
believe that Jesus was the Son

of God? Hmm. Let's keep reading.
Now we're going to jump to

Matthew because it tells about
this story in Matthew as well.

Matthew 19 verse 17, 19 verse 17
says: So he said to him, Why do

you call me good?

We read that part, right, In
another gospel. Interesting how

the stories agree
with each other. Right?

No one is good but One, and that
is God. But if you want to enter

into life keep the commandments.

That's what Jesus said to
the rich, young ruler. Keep my

commandments. Now right
away the rich, young ruler had a

follow-up question. Well
which one? Back then it was so

confusing because there were
so many rules. Way more than 10.

Right? So in verses 18 and
19 he asked him that follow-up

question. He said to him, so the
rich, young ruler said to Jesus

When ones? And Jesus said, Well
you shall not murder, you shall

not commit adultery, you shall
not steal, you shall not bear

false witness, you shall honor
your father and mother and you

shall love your
neighbor as yourself.

Do those sound familiar to you?
That's right. He listed several
00:12:56.44\00:13:00.98
of the 10 commandments. And
right away the rich, young ruler

was feeling pretty good
about himself wasn't he? He was
00:13:04.75\00:13:08.12
thinking Hmm, verse 20:
00:13:08.15\00:13:10.92
The young man said to him,
Oh all these things I have kept
00:13:10.95\00:13:13.99
from my youth.
00:13:14.02\00:13:15.36
He was feeling quite proud of
himself; gave himself a little
00:13:15.39\00:13:19.59
pat on the back.
Right? Then he said,...
00:13:19.63\00:13:25.13
But what do I still lack?
00:13:25.17\00:13:27.77
He still didn't feel that he had
the surety he was sure that he
00:13:27.80\00:13:34.54
had eternal life. And this
is where the shocker comes in.

Jesus really surprised the rich
young ruler with his response.
00:13:39.41\00:13:44.55
No one saw it coming. The
disciples didn't see it coming.

The rich young ruler definitely
didn't see it coming and anyone
00:13:47.92\00:13:50.59
else who was there watching and
listening were all surprised by

what Jesus said. What, I know
you're asking, Miss Michelle,

what did he say?
Here we go, verse 21:...

Jesus said to him, If you want
to be perfect go and sell what

you have and give to the poor
and you will have treasure in

heaven and then come follow me.

Sell all he had? You know, Jesus
saw right into the rich young
00:14:13.52\00:14:18.52
rulers heart and he saw that
he had a good heart and that he
00:14:18.55\00:14:22.06
could be a good disciple of
Jesus. But he saw that there was
00:14:22.09\00:14:25.49
something inside his heart that
was holding him back and you may
00:14:25.53\00:14:29.56
be able to guess what that was
at this point when Jesus said
00:14:29.60\00:14:32.23
sell all you have. Now does
Jesus call everyone to sell all
00:14:32.27\00:14:34.87
that they have? Not everyone in
the Bible had that calling. The
00:14:34.90\00:14:39.27
disciples did. Right? The
disciples were called to leave
00:14:39.31\00:14:44.21
all they had and follow Jesus.
We'll talk more about that in a
00:14:44.25\00:14:46.48
little bit. You see, what
was holding the rich young ruler
00:14:46.51\00:14:50.92
back was that he was breaking
the first commandment. Do you
00:14:50.95\00:14:55.22
remember what the first
commandment was? One finger,
00:14:55.26\00:14:58.53
God should be first in our life
and sadly he loved being rich
00:14:58.56\00:15:05.80
more than he loved God and he
wasn't truly thinking about the
00:15:05.83\00:15:10.57
needs of others and loving
others as he loved himself.
00:15:10.61\00:15:14.08
He loved his money, he loved his
position, he loved the fame that
00:15:14.11\00:15:18.95
it brought him. And now comes
the struggle. We had the shocker
00:15:18.98\00:15:23.02
and now we have the struggle.
Inside his heart the rich young
00:15:23.05\00:15:27.19
ruler was wrestling with what
to do. He knew the right thing
00:15:27.22\00:15:30.43
to do. Jesus had told him
exactly what he needed to do.
00:15:30.46\00:15:34.03
But people; what would people
think? The members of the Jewish
00:15:34.06\00:15:38.63
council would just totally turn
on him. His family would think
00:15:38.67\00:15:43.14
he was crazy, people would think
he was crazy to do this. And he
00:15:43.17\00:15:48.38
had to make a choice. And he
did. Are you ready to know what
00:15:48.41\00:15:53.52
was inside of his heart? Let's
take a look. Inside the rich
00:15:53.55\00:15:59.22
young ruler's heart sadly was
love for money. And that's what
00:15:59.25\00:16:07.56
he decided to choose. In the
next verse let's read how the
00:16:07.60\00:16:11.47
Bible says it. In verse 22:...
00:16:11.50\00:16:13.47
But when the young man
had heard this he went away
00:16:13.50\00:16:16.44
sorrowful for he
had great possessions.
00:16:16.47\00:16:20.21
How would we say that today?
He had lots of stuff that he
00:16:20.24\00:16:26.01
loved more than he wanted
to follow Jesus. Ow! What a sad
00:16:26.05\00:16:32.19
choice. Now the disciples, they
were scratching their heads.
00:16:32.22\00:16:35.36
They could not understand this
whole thing, because back then
00:16:35.39\00:16:39.06
if you had a lot of money that
meant that God had blessed you
00:16:39.09\00:16:43.23
and that you were highly favored
and why would you choose to be
00:16:43.26\00:16:48.04
poor and why would you choose
that for your life? So not only
00:16:48.07\00:16:54.18
were they confused they
were really bummed, they were
00:16:54.21\00:16:56.24
disappointed. Why? They wanted
the rich young ruler on their
00:16:56.28\00:17:00.28
team. They thought that he
would make them look really good
00:17:00.32\00:17:02.98
Kind of reminds me of how they
really wanted Judas to be on
00:17:03.02\00:17:06.69
their team as well. And Judas
was especially disappointed
00:17:06.72\00:17:10.56
because he also thought
that having the rich young ruler
00:17:10.59\00:17:13.96
would be a great benefit to
their idea of what they wanted
00:17:14.00\00:17:18.77
Jesus's ministry to be which was
an earthly kingdom to defeat the
00:17:18.80\00:17:22.07
Romans. Right? But we know that
that's not what Jesus wanted.

And in Matthew 19
verses 24 and 25 it says:...

And again I say to
You, it is easier...

this is Jesus talking to
his disciples afterward. Let's

start in verse 23 actually:...

Then Jesus said to his disciples
Assuredly I say to you that it

is hard for a rich man to enter
the kingdom of heaven. And again

I say to you, It is easier for
a camel to go through the eye of

a needle than for a rich man
to enter the kingdom of God. And

when his disciples heard this
they were greatly astonished

saying, Who then can be saved?
But Jesus looked at them and

said to them, With men this
is impossible but will God all

is. So here's a needle. This is

the eye of the needle is
not at the pokey end but at the

opposite end and you probably
can't even see it because it's

so tiny; there's a little hole
there and that's where you put

your thread through, pull it
through and then knot it off and

that's how you sew. Right? And
what Jesus was saying was that

very difficult for a rich man
or woman to give those things up

for Jesus. It's like this camel,
which isn't even a full size

camel, right, trying to go
through this tiny little hole.

That's ridiculous. Right? And
the disciples were thinking that

it sounded really hopeless.
Well will any rich people be in
00:19:05.61\00:19:08.64
heaven or have eternal life?
This seems impossible. And yet

Jesus follows it up with one of
my favorite verses in the Bible
00:19:13.05\00:19:16.69
where he says:...

With men this is impossible but
with God all things are possible
00:19:18.09\00:19:23.16
Well, a spoiler alert. Next
week we're going to read about a
00:19:23.19\00:19:26.76
story where a rich man made a
different choice and showed that

all things are possible with
God Now the disciples were all

really confused by this. They
were really sad about the choice

the rich young ruler had
made and so was Jesus. Following

Jesus you know is never the easy
choice. Now we should put Jesus

first, in all we do and when
we do he will never leave or

forsake us. It may not be
easy to follow Jesus to make
00:19:51.55\00:19:55.66
that choice but he will make it
so worth it. Suffering can even

result. Some people who
have chosen to follow Jesus,
00:20:00.43\00:20:02.56
especially in different
countries or even here in our
00:20:02.60\00:20:06.03
country have faced consequences
and even their family telling
00:20:06.07\00:20:09.17
them that they don't want them
to be a part of their family any
00:20:09.20\00:20:11.37
more. Isn't that sad? But Jesus
has promised that He will never
00:20:11.41\00:20:15.94
leave us or forsake us and that
nothing is impossible for Him.

We are charged to give to the
poor and you will have treasure

in heaven and come follow me.

But while we were there there

were lots of troubles. People
were not nice to one another.

One day one of our very close
family friends, he got badly

hurt by some robbers. They
wanted to take his car and they

left him badly injured. So we
got a call and we decided as a

family that we were going to
help him and do whatever we can

so that he can get the best help
possible. But in order to do

we had to find a plane with
enough seats to take him from

way to South Africa in the south

of Africa. In those days, there
were not lots of planes that

went to the Democratic Republic
of Congo. So we had to go

downtown and find somebody else
who could help us? So my father

went there. He went downtown and
then he started walking to an

office where he thought that he
could get the best help possible

a brown car that pulled up right

He turned around and guess what
