Amazon rain forest. Here it is

someone brought by. The same day

baby porcupine and all the

parrots, birds and flowers.
There's so many things in God's

nature all around the house.
And it is just a beautiful place

Along with the beautiful
place are many beautiful people.

Here is the group that
went with us this last trip.

In the mornings,

we would have worship and some
of the young people from the

community would come by and join
us for worship, hear stories

we did when we were down there
is we had a wedding. Right?

Yes we had a wedding, we helped
to prepare for the food, for

decoration. It was fun. We used
lots of our elements from nature

our flowers. See all the flowers
and trees. So it was a lot of

fun. Then we fed everyone and
everyone from the village were

invited. It was a lot of fun.
People enjoyed, the kids enjoyed

everyone had a good time.

We know that Jesus likes
weddings because one of his

first miracles was at a wedding.
That's wonderful. Also while we

our pastor from here came down,

Pastor Dennis, and he shared
his story about being freed from

alcohol and smoking and drugs.
These are things that they deal

with down there as well. So they
were drawn to his story. They

wanted to know more and they
wanted to know how they could

get free from these addictions
through stories from the Bible.

Also, we gave out food baskets
with the help of our local

church and friends for Christmas
We have been doing this as a

tradition. This is the third
year. So it's a lot of fun. The

kids help to put together
all the items in the baskets.

During the meetings we give them
out. They were already expecting

It was Christmas day so
they took it home and they could

even enjoy some of the items for
a Christmas party, for Christmas

While we were down there we had
a few people that were ready for

baptism. So we wanted to have
another celebration for that

like the wedding. We blew
up balloons. We went down and

decorated the river very
nicely but then right before the

baptism started, we're in the
rain forest, it started to rain.

But that didn't discourage us
at all. We got down in the river

and we had those baptisms, those
celebrations and all was good.

Also we enjoy connecting
with the young people. Beatrice

cooking with them. Pastor Dennis

eating with them, visiting in

with people down there. One of

Do you remember who lived
in Bethany? Hmm. It's about two

miles from Jerusalem and three
of Jesus's closest friends live

there. Do you remember who they
were? That's right. Mary, Martha
00:09:01.70\00:09:06.64
and Lazarus. These three friends
were very close to Jesus.

You see they believed in Jesus
and when he was with them he

didn't have to convince
them that he was the Savior, the

Messiah, the Son of God. They
believed he was. He didn't have

to tell them stories and try to
explain things to them. He could

just relax and be himself. Sadly
in this story one of his friends

falls ill or sick. Do
you remember who it was?

Lazarus. Lazarus became very
sick. Jesus was not in Bethany

at this point. But right away
the sisters sent a message to

Jesus about their brother,
Lazarus. This story is in the
00:09:46.31\00:09:50.89
gospel book of John; Matthew,
Mark, Luke, John, the fourth
00:09:50.92\00:09:58.23
gospel. It's in John chapter 11
verse 3. John 11 verse 3. And if
00:09:58.26\00:10:07.20
you don't follow along now you
can write down the reference and

read it with your family again
later. John 11 verse 3 says:

Therefore the sisters sent to
Him [capital Him, that would be

Jesus] saying Lord, behold
the one who you love is sick.

The message probably took about
a day or so to reach Jesus,

and Jesus's response came back.

When Jesus heard that
he said, This sickness

is not unto death, but for the
glory of God that the Son of God

may be glorified through it.

We know sometimes bad things
happen and good things can come

of it. So when that message went
back, the sisters thought, Oh,

well maybe he's not going
to die and he's going to become

miraculously well. But
sadly that's not what happened.

Verse 5 says: Now loved Mary and
her sister and Lazarus, so when

he heard that Lazarus was sick
he stayed two more days in the

place where he was. Now
that doesn't make sense and his
00:11:02.99\00:11:05.96
disciples were quite confused
as well. Why didn't he quickly
00:11:05.99\00:11:11.57
go up and put his sandals on and
start hiking down the road to
00:11:11.60\00:11:13.77
Bethany to help his friend who
he loved? Why didn't he do that?
00:11:13.80\00:11:17.37
They were so confused.
00:11:17.41\00:11:24.78
Then after he said to his
disciples let us go to Judea
00:11:24.81\00:11:27.28
again. The disciples said
to Him, Rabbi, lately the Jews
00:11:27.32\00:11:30.35
sought to stone you [they wanted
to hurt you] and are you going
00:11:30.39\00:11:33.52
there again? Jesus answered, Are
there not 12 hours in the day?
00:11:33.56\00:11:38.09
If anyone walks in the day he
does not stumble because he sees
00:11:38.13\00:11:42.20
the light of this world,
but if one walks in the night he

stumbles because the light is
not in him. These things he said

and after that he said to them,
Our friend Lazarus sleeps but

I go that I will wake him up.

Now when people are sick
it's important to sleep. Right?

To rest, to let your body fight
off that whatever is making you
00:12:00.42\00:12:05.45
sick; a virus or a bacteria, who
knows, right? So his disciples
00:12:05.52\00:12:10.19
thought, oh, this is a good
thing. Jesus is going to say
00:12:10.23\00:12:12.13
wake up, you're okay now. You've
slept it off. Right? But this is
00:12:12.16\00:12:17.10
not what happened.
00:12:17.13\00:12:18.47
Then his disciples said,
Lord if he sleeps he'll get well
00:12:18.50\00:12:21.74
[that's great]
00:12:21.77\00:12:23.10
However, Jesus spoke of his
death but they thought he was
00:12:23.14\00:12:26.41
speaking about Lazarus taking
rest in sleep. Then Jesus said
00:12:26.44\00:12:30.61
to them plainly, Lazarus is
dead, and I am glad for your
00:12:30.65\00:12:37.09
sakes that I was not there that
you may believe. Nevertheless,
00:12:37.12\00:12:40.39
let us go to him.
00:12:40.42\00:12:41.89
He was glad that he was dead?!
This made absolutely no sense at
00:12:41.92\00:12:45.69
all. Jesus was surely acting
strangely, thought his disciples
00:12:45.73\00:12:50.00
And so they did,
they went back to Bethany.
00:12:50.03\00:12:56.47
And there they sent a message
to Mary and Martha, but [it says
00:12:56.50\00:13:03.58
here in verse 17] So when
Jesus came he found that he had
00:13:03.61\00:13:07.85
already been in
the tomb for four days.
00:13:07.88\00:13:09.88
Lazarus had already been dead
and in the tomb, like buried,
00:13:09.92\00:13:13.69
for four days.
00:13:13.72\00:13:15.52
Now Bethany was near Jerusalem,
about two miles away, and many
00:13:15.56\00:13:18.06
of the Jews had joined the
women around Martha and Mary to
00:13:18.09\00:13:20.86
comfort them concerning their
brother. And now Martha, as soon

as she heard that Jesus
was coming, went and met Him.

And Mary must not have heard
because she didn't go right away

But Mary was
sitting in the house.

Now Martha said to Jesus,

Lord, if you had been here,
my brother would not have died.

You can imagine the pain in her
voice as she said that to Jesus.

Yet she believed in Him still.
And she showed that by what she

said next.

But even now I know that
whatever you ask of God, God
00:13:50.49\00:13:54.50
will give it to you. Jesus said
to her. Your brother will rise
00:13:54.53\00:13:59.83
again. Martha said to him, I
know that he will arise again in

the resurrection at the last
day Jesus said to her, I am the
00:14:03.24\00:14:07.24
resurrection and the life. He
who believes in me though he may
00:14:07.28\00:14:11.28
die shall live.

What great news that is! Right?

And whoever lives and believes
in me shall never die. Do you

believe this, he asked Martha.
She said, Oh yes, Lord, I

believe that you are the Christ
the Son of God who has come into

the world. And when she had said
these things she went her way

and secretly called Mary her
sister saying [Hey come on] the

teacher has come and is calling
for you. As soon as she heard

that she arose quickly and came
to him. Now Jesus had not yet

come into town but was in
the place where Martha met him.

But when the Jews saw Mary
heading out they thought, Oh

she must be going to the tomb to
mourn some more. Let's go with

her and support her.
00:14:54.39\00:14:56.66
Then when Mary came to Jesus and
saw him she too fell down at his
00:14:56.69\00:15:01.26
feet saying Lord if you had only
been here my brother would not
00:15:01.30\00:15:04.43
have died.

When bad things happen in our
life it's really hard to make
00:15:05.83\00:15:08.40
sense of them isn't it.

Therefore, when Jesus saw her
weeping and the Jews who came

with her weeping, he groaned
in spirit and was troubled.

Jesus was sad too. Well didn't
he know that something great was
00:15:15.54\00:15:19.81
going to happen. Of course, he
knew because he was the One who

was going to ask
God for that to happen.

And then He said, Where have you
laid him. And they said to Him,

Come and see
Lord. [And] Jesus wept.

Right there, John chapter 11
verse 35 is the shortest verse

in the Bible. And it says,
Jesus wept. Why would Jesus weep

though when he knew the
end of this story? We don't
00:15:41.27\00:15:45.21
even know it yet.
00:15:45.24\00:15:46.57
Or you may have heard it before.
But Jesus wept. You see Jesus
00:15:46.61\00:15:50.28
saw right there in that moment
all the pain throughout history
00:15:50.31\00:15:54.68
all the way from Cain killing
Abel all the way to the end when
00:15:54.72\00:15:59.85
the people who choose not to
follow Jesus will be destroyed.

And he wept to think of all that
heartache that had gone on and
00:16:02.92\00:16:08.96
he wept because his friends were
sad. When your friends are sad

we're sad too aren't we? Now
let's continue though because

we're getting to the
great part of the story.

The Jews said, [Oh] See how he
loved him. And some of them said

Could not this man who opened
the eyes of the blind also kept

this man from dying.

Like why did he let him die?
This makes no sense. Lazarus had

been in the tomb how many days?
Four days. A tomb back then
00:16:32.39\00:16:37.99
where they would bury people
was often like a cave with a
00:16:38.03\00:16:40.73
rock rolled in front of the
cave. And you can imagine that
00:16:40.76\00:16:45.13
after four days of not being
alive they were concerned with
00:16:45.17\00:16:50.07
Jesus next request.
00:16:50.11\00:16:51.67
Jesus said, Take away the stone.
And Martha the sister of him who
00:16:51.71\00:16:56.11
was dead said to him, Lord
by this time there is a stench
00:16:56.14\00:16:59.01
[a stink] for he has been dead
for four days. But Jesus said to
00:16:59.05\00:17:03.59
her [We're now on verse 40]
Did I not say to you that if you
00:17:03.62\00:17:08.32
would believe you would see
the glory of God. Then they took

away the stone from the place
where the dead man was lying and

Jesus lifted up his eyes and
said, Father I thank you that

You have heard Me and I
know that you always hear Me but

because of the people who are
standing by me I said this that

they may believe that you sent
Me. Now when he had said these

things he cried out with a
loud voice, Lazarus come forth.

And sure enough Lazarus came
forth! Now back then they used

to prepare the body for burial
and we do that today too but

the families generally don't
do it, you would go to a funeral

home and they would do it. But
back then they used to wrap the

body in cloth. Now the only
thing I had was toilet paper

but they would wrap the body
in cloth and in that way honor

the body and embalm that person.
They would put special herbs and
00:18:00.18\00:18:06.21
things and the whole body from
head to toe will be wrapped that
00:18:06.25\00:18:09.42
way. Right? You may have seen
pictures of this in the past.
00:18:09.45\00:18:11.69
But can you imagine having to
walk when you're all wrapped up
00:18:11.72\00:18:16.99
cloth. Maybe you could practice
with a blanket or something like
00:18:17.03\00:18:21.40
that. Don't want to waste good
toilet paper. Right? But it's
00:18:21.43\00:18:25.50
hard to walk, right, when
you're all wrapped up tightly.
00:18:25.53\00:18:27.80
But pretty soon out of the tomb
came Lazarus waddling out, right
00:18:27.84\00:18:34.11
trying to get free from the
grave cloths, but he was alive!

Wow! I can't believe it.

And he who had died came out
bound hand and foot with grave

clothes and his face
was wrapped with a cloth.

So he came out

and hopefully he didn't bump
into anything. His whole face

was even covered.

Jesus said (the logical
thing, of course) Loose him

So they did. You can imagine
Mary and Martha racing to their

brother and unwrapping him and
I can also imagine the biggest

family hug of all history. I can
just see it now. Oh wow! This is

so exciting. Most rejoiced
at this wonderful thing that had
00:19:12.95\00:19:16.92
happened. They couldn't believe
it and through Lazarus' death
00:19:16.95\00:19:20.56
and resurrection before the
second coming resurrection many
00:19:20.59\00:19:25.49
people believed in Jesus. But
there were others who saw this
00:19:25.53\00:19:30.37
and were even more angry
and hateful and thought hurtful
00:19:30.40\00:19:34.24
things of Jesus than ever before
In fact, they went to tattle on
00:19:34.27\00:19:38.37
him to the Pharisees and shared
what he had done. Some people
00:19:38.41\00:19:41.68
even said that he had done it
by the power of Satan. But would
00:19:41.71\00:19:44.48
Satan want something good like
that to happen? Hmm. I don't
00:19:44.51\00:19:47.25
think so. But while this
was happening, while all the
00:19:47.28\00:19:51.39
happiness was happening and a
few spiteful people who ran away
00:19:51.42\00:19:54.46
tell, Jesus quietly slipped away
because now was not his time.

Right? Now was not his time.
Wow! What an amazing story.

This story makes me think, can't
help but think, of the second
00:20:04.33\00:20:08.27
coming and that resurrection
story, when all who are in their
00:20:08.30\00:20:12.31
graves will hear His voice
and come forth. John 5 verses
00:20:12.34\00:20:16.21
28 and 29. This verse means so
much to me because I can't wait
00:20:16.24\00:20:20.82
for that day. Maybe you've lost
loved ones before. I've lost
00:20:20.85\00:20:24.95
grandpas and grandmas, I've lost
aunties and uncles and it's hard
00:20:24.99\00:20:32.16
isn't it. I've lost friends who
have passed away. Passed away
00:20:32.19\00:20:36.30
means died. Right? And I can't
wait until that day when we look
00:20:36.33\00:20:40.94
In fact, I kind of want to be in
a cemetery. I know it's kind of
00:20:40.97\00:20:43.77
weird, but here's why. I would
really like to be in a cemetery
00:20:43.81\00:20:46.34
This is, you can't see probably
very well, but this is my
00:20:46.37\00:20:49.04
grandpa standing beside where my
grandma is buried, and now he's
00:20:49.08\00:20:51.71
buried there too. And it's so
sad. But the happy part was if

I'm in a cemetery when Jesus
comes all of a sudden it'll be
00:20:55.48\00:20:58.72
boing, boing, boing, boing, and
we'll see everybody coming up
00:20:58.75\00:21:01.76
out of the grave, who have
chosen to be on God's team.

How exciting that will be. And I
really would like to be where my

family is that day so I can be
the first one to give them a hug

and tell them it's time to
go home, to our heavenly home.
