00:04:06.78\00:04:12.81 Well, it is, my friends. 00:04:12.85\00:04:14.82 And we need that air, that good fresh air 00:04:14.85\00:04:19.29 because it is that breath of life. 00:04:19.32\00:04:23.73 In fact, one of life's most overlooked, 00:04:23.76\00:04:26.70 but most precious health gifts is pure air. 00:04:26.73\00:04:32.40 But today, the quality of our air 00:04:32.43\00:04:35.44 has dramatically changed. 00:04:35.47\00:04:37.61 It's not so fresh. 00:04:37.64\00:04:39.64 We have polluted outdoor air 00:04:39.67\00:04:42.14 where people are actually wearing mask 00:04:42.18\00:04:44.61 because it is so polluted. 00:04:44.65\00:04:46.78 And we also have polluted indoor air. 00:04:46.82\00:04:50.15 We have a lot of polluted air everywhere, 00:04:50.19\00:04:53.92 fumes from vehicles, toxins from factories, 00:04:53.96\00:04:58.29 toxins from tobacco smoke, 00:04:58.33\00:05:00.83 and damp uncirculated air even indoors. 00:05:00.86\00:05:05.47 In fact, many people use air conditioners constantly 00:05:05.50\00:05:11.21 and rarely getting any good pure fresh air. 00:05:11.24\00:05:17.35 Our lifestyle habits can significantly impact 00:05:17.38\00:05:20.72 our ability to breathe in pure air. 00:05:20.75\00:05:25.09 And so let's look at some of the hindrances 00:05:25.12\00:05:27.92 to the body's oxygen supply. 00:05:27.96\00:05:30.53 What are some of those things that hinder us 00:05:30.56\00:05:33.83 from getting good body's oxygen that we need? 00:05:33.90\00:05:38.60 Well, tobacco smoke is one of them. 00:05:38.63\00:05:41.64 We talked about that in our lifestyle presentation. 00:05:41.67\00:05:45.44 And tobacco smoke damages the lungs, 00:05:45.47\00:05:48.58 and limits the circulation of the blood, 00:05:48.61\00:05:51.38 and pollutes the body. 00:05:51.41\00:05:53.72 So tobacco smoke even for the non-smoker 00:05:53.78\00:05:58.12 pollutes the air. 00:05:58.15\00:06:00.19 And from Smokefree.gov, it says this. 00:06:00.22\00:06:05.36 "Smoking causes inflammation in the small airways 00:06:05.39\00:06:09.13 and tissues of your lungs. 00:06:09.16\00:06:11.03 This can make your chest feel tight 00:06:11.07\00:06:13.64 or cause you to wheeze or feel short of breath. 00:06:13.67\00:06:16.71 Continued inflammation builds up scar tissue, 00:06:16.74\00:06:20.28 which leads to physical changes to your lungs and airways 00:06:20.31\00:06:24.38 that can make your breathing hard." 00:06:24.41\00:06:26.82 So smoking, my friends, 00:06:26.85\00:06:28.55 causes inflammation in the small airways 00:06:28.58\00:06:31.69 and tissues of our lungs, 00:06:31.72\00:06:33.96 so that's why we need to get away 00:06:33.99\00:06:36.32 from even the people who are smoking 00:06:36.36\00:06:38.86 and try to get into some good pure fresh air. 00:06:38.89\00:06:43.26 And another thing 00:06:43.33\00:06:44.67 that actually hinders our breathing is alcohol. 00:06:44.70\00:06:48.57 Alcohol impairs circulation and limits our breathing. 00:06:48.60\00:06:53.54 In fact, alcohol affects nearly 00:06:53.58\00:06:56.01 every major organ in the human body, 00:06:56.04\00:06:58.68 including the brain, the heart, liver, pancreas, 00:06:58.71\00:07:02.92 and kidneys. 00:07:02.95\00:07:04.32 But a team of researchers from Loyola University 00:07:04.35\00:07:07.82 has found it can also make it harder 00:07:07.86\00:07:10.66 for the lungs to breathe. 00:07:10.69\00:07:12.89 In fact, binge drinking may be the reason 00:07:12.93\00:07:15.73 it's hard to catch your breath. 00:07:15.76\00:07:17.90 And they say, "Alcohol appears to disrupt 00:07:17.93\00:07:21.24 the healthy balance in the lung," 00:07:21.27\00:07:23.51 said the study's lead author Dr. Majid Afshar, 00:07:23.54\00:07:28.11 a pulmonologist 00:07:28.14\00:07:29.51 at Loyola University's School of Medicine. 00:07:29.54\00:07:33.52 And there are other factors as well, my friends. 00:07:33.55\00:07:36.42 A high fat diet. 00:07:36.45\00:07:38.02 A high fat diet reduces the oxygen level in our blood, 00:07:38.05\00:07:41.96 making the blood thicker 00:07:41.99\00:07:44.03 and causing it to flow more slowly. 00:07:44.06\00:07:47.93 And so there are other factors. 00:07:47.96\00:07:49.73 There are so many factors that hinder this oxygen 00:07:49.76\00:07:54.97 and help us to not breathe as well as we should, 00:07:55.00\00:07:59.51 and dehydration is one of those. 00:07:59.54\00:08:02.68 Drinking too little water keeps the blood from flowing freely. 00:08:02.71\00:08:07.68 Have you ever thought about the fact 00:08:07.72\00:08:09.62 that just not drinking enough water 00:08:09.65\00:08:12.45 keeps you from your blood flowing freely? 00:08:12.49\00:08:16.19 Well, there is another thing, too, 00:08:16.22\00:08:18.13 and that is tight clothing. 00:08:18.16\00:08:20.73 Tight clothing that restricts healthy circulation, 00:08:20.76\00:08:24.00 inhibits the lungs from expanding, 00:08:24.07\00:08:27.34 and actually decreases the oxygen supply. 00:08:27.37\00:08:31.51 So we need to keep our clothing 00:08:31.54\00:08:34.41 a little bit more loose on our bodies 00:08:34.44\00:08:37.95 that will keep us from having our lungs restricted. 00:08:37.98\00:08:42.58 And then poor posture prevents the lungs 00:08:42.62\00:08:46.32 from expanding fully, 00:08:46.35\00:08:48.42 so we need good posture with our head erect 00:08:48.46\00:08:52.63 and our shoulders back, 00:08:52.66\00:08:54.10 especially when we're not only walking, 00:08:54.10\00:08:57.13 but also when we're sitting, we need good posture. 00:08:57.17\00:09:00.97 Sometimes we have a tendency to slouch down 00:09:01.00\00:09:04.24 in that easy chair. 00:09:04.27\00:09:06.81 And then, incorrect breathing. 00:09:06.84\00:09:10.08 We need to learn to take those deep breaths, 00:09:10.11\00:09:14.05 so that we get that oxygen in our lungs. 00:09:14.08\00:09:17.72 And so we inhale deeply and the diaphragm contracts 00:09:17.75\00:09:22.66 and the lungs expand, 00:09:22.69\00:09:24.79 and then when we exhale, the diaphragm relaxes. 00:09:24.83\00:09:29.93 So we need to inhale and exhale 00:09:29.96\00:09:33.44 and practice that, actually, regularly. 00:09:33.47\00:09:36.81 Ministry of Healing, page 272 says this. 00:09:36.84\00:09:41.68 "Full, deep inspirations of pure air 00:09:41.71\00:09:45.28 which fill the lungs with oxygen, purify the blood. 00:09:45.31\00:09:49.48 They impart to it a bright color, and send it, 00:09:49.52\00:09:53.09 a life-giving current, to every part of the body." 00:09:53.12\00:09:58.16 It's amazing. 00:09:58.19\00:09:59.53 Deep inspirations of pure air 00:09:59.56\00:10:02.46 are going to fill the lungs with good oxygen. 00:10:02.50\00:10:06.37 So we need to be taking, my friends, those deep breaths. 00:10:06.40\00:10:10.77 There are many, many health benefits of fresh air, 00:10:10.81\00:10:14.58 good pure fresh air. 00:10:14.61\00:10:16.51 So let's look at them. 00:10:16.54\00:10:17.88 Well, 00:10:17.91\00:10:19.25 serotonin can significantly lighten your mood 00:10:19.28\00:10:22.15 and promote a sense of happiness and well-being. 00:10:22.18\00:10:25.65 So pure air can actually promote happiness. 00:10:25.69\00:10:29.56 Have you ever wondered why you feel so good 00:10:29.59\00:10:32.83 when you're out in the fresh air? 00:10:32.86\00:10:35.23 It's because of that serotonin that you get 00:10:35.26\00:10:38.63 when you're in some good pure fresh air. 00:10:38.67\00:10:42.47 And according to a group of studies published 00:10:42.50\00:10:45.54 in a 2010 issue of the "Journal of Environmental Psychology," 00:10:45.57\00:10:50.38 research participants reported 00:10:50.41\00:10:53.38 actually feeling happier, and healthier, 00:10:53.45\00:10:56.92 and more alive when they spent time in nature. 00:10:56.95\00:11:00.86 It might be a good idea, my friends, 00:11:00.89\00:11:04.13 to get outside in that good fresh air 00:11:04.16\00:11:08.66 and sunshine. 00:11:08.70\00:11:10.33 Pure air also improves digestion. 00:11:10.37\00:11:14.54 What a wonderful thing pure fresh air is 00:11:14.57\00:11:18.51 even to help us digest our food better. 00:11:18.54\00:11:21.78 Pure air improves the blood pressure 00:11:21.81\00:11:25.21 and the heart rate. 00:11:25.25\00:11:26.72 Some people have high blood pressure. 00:11:26.78\00:11:29.58 And did you ever think about the fact 00:11:29.62\00:11:31.79 that just getting out in the good fresh air 00:11:31.82\00:11:35.36 will actually help lower your blood pressure? 00:11:35.39\00:11:40.86 "A 2008 study 00:11:40.90\00:11:43.16 published in the "Journal of Biological Regulators 00:11:43.20\00:11:46.17 and Homeostatic Agents" recruited participants 00:11:46.20\00:11:50.44 to spend time walking forest and city areas 00:11:50.47\00:11:54.44 to evaluate the impact of walking in the fresh air 00:11:54.48\00:11:58.15 on blood pressure and heart rate." 00:11:58.18\00:12:01.25 So they took these two groups 00:12:01.28\00:12:03.59 some in the forest, out in nature 00:12:03.62\00:12:06.22 and some in the city. 00:12:06.25\00:12:08.82 "And according to the research, participants showed 00:12:08.86\00:12:12.23 more physical signs of relaxation, 00:12:12.26\00:12:15.63 including lower blood pressure 00:12:15.66\00:12:18.00 and lower amounts of stress hormone cortisol, 00:12:18.03\00:12:21.94 when they spent time in the forest 00:12:21.97\00:12:24.67 rather than in the city." 00:12:24.71\00:12:26.68 So it is so important to get out there, 00:12:26.74\00:12:29.84 especially if you live in the city. 00:12:29.88\00:12:32.01 Find some park or someplace where you can go out 00:12:32.05\00:12:35.72 and take in that good deep fresh air by the trees. 00:12:35.75\00:12:40.66 Pure air increases your energy. 00:12:40.72\00:12:43.79 In fact, not long ago, 00:12:43.83\00:12:45.33 my husband and I climbed the mountains in the Swiss Alps 00:12:45.36\00:12:50.03 with our friends Ted and Nancy. 00:12:50.10\00:12:52.53 And wow, it was amazing just to get out there 00:12:52.57\00:12:56.34 in those beautiful Alps, 00:12:56.37\00:12:58.61 it actually increased our energy, I know that. 00:12:58.64\00:13:02.51 And pure air cleanses 00:13:02.54\00:13:04.81 and improves your lung function, 00:13:04.85\00:13:07.52 so your whole lungs are going to function better 00:13:07.55\00:13:10.29 when you get out in the fresh air. 00:13:10.32\00:13:12.02 But you know, just as we are a sedentary nation, 00:13:12.05\00:13:15.52 we tend to be living indoors a lot, 00:13:15.56\00:13:19.06 but we need to get out in the fresh air 00:13:19.09\00:13:21.70 and the sunshine. 00:13:21.73\00:13:23.93 And in a book called Child Guidance, page 339, 00:13:23.97\00:13:28.10 it says, "By active exercise in the open air every day, 00:13:28.14\00:13:33.34 the liver, the kidneys, and the lungs 00:13:33.38\00:13:36.24 also will be strengthened to perform their work." 00:13:36.28\00:13:39.65 Amazing. 00:13:39.68\00:13:41.65 Even the liver, the kidneys, and the lungs 00:13:41.68\00:13:44.19 are going to function so much better 00:13:44.25\00:13:46.52 as we get out there in the fresh air. 00:13:46.55\00:13:49.42 Have you ever thought about fresh air 00:13:49.46\00:13:51.29 as being such a remedy to help your health 00:13:51.33\00:13:54.46 and to help you to live longer, healthier, and happier? 00:13:54.46\00:13:57.80 Well, it even helps our mental health 00:13:57.83\00:14:01.04 because pure air improves the brain power. 00:14:01.07\00:14:05.64 And pure air fosters mental health 00:14:05.67\00:14:10.55 from Harvard University Medical School, they reported, 00:14:10.58\00:14:13.92 "Researchers at the University of Essex in England 00:14:13.95\00:14:17.59 are advancing the notion 00:14:17.62\00:14:19.52 that exercising in the presence of nature has added benefit, 00:14:19.55\00:14:24.59 particularly for mental health." 00:14:24.63\00:14:27.30 So our mental health even improves in the fresh air. 00:14:27.40\00:14:31.10 And, my friends, 00:14:31.13\00:14:32.50 we've been talking a lot about building the immune system, 00:14:32.53\00:14:36.00 and pure air enhances the immune system, 00:14:36.04\00:14:40.54 so that you feel so much better 00:14:40.58\00:14:42.94 and you can live longer and healthier. 00:14:42.98\00:14:46.08 And so here are some benefits of how it actually improves 00:14:46.11\00:14:50.55 the immune system. 00:14:50.59\00:14:52.49 It can improve our happiness, it improves our digestion, 00:14:52.52\00:14:57.13 and even our blood pressure and our heart rate goes down. 00:14:57.19\00:15:01.73 Get those elderly people, my friends, 00:15:01.76\00:15:05.40 out there in the fresh air. 00:15:05.43\00:15:07.34 Many elderly people tend to be indoors 00:15:07.37\00:15:11.31 when they need to be outdoors, breathing that good fresh air. 00:15:11.34\00:15:16.08 And it improves the energy. 00:15:16.11\00:15:18.18 I know that my energy level goes up when I am outside. 00:15:18.21\00:15:22.75 And it improves the lung function, 00:15:22.78\00:15:25.55 improves brain power, 00:15:25.59\00:15:27.82 and improves mental health, and, best of all, 00:15:27.86\00:15:31.19 it's going to improve your immune system. 00:15:31.23\00:15:33.90 So there are many, many benefits 00:15:33.93\00:15:36.83 to good fresh pure air. 00:15:36.87\00:15:39.60 Well, let's look at some tips 00:15:39.63\00:15:41.70 for getting good pure fresh air. 00:15:41.74\00:15:45.11 Exercise in nature. 00:15:45.14\00:15:47.24 My husband and I will get on our bikes 00:15:47.28\00:15:49.44 and go through those trails. 00:15:49.48\00:15:51.41 In fact, one of the things that I love to do 00:15:51.45\00:15:53.88 is just walk through the trails even, singing, 00:15:53.92\00:15:58.12 listening to the birds sing, and talking to my Creator. 00:15:58.15\00:16:02.39 So exercise out there in nature, 00:16:02.42\00:16:05.16 it's going to improve your health, my friends, 00:16:05.19\00:16:08.06 I know it will. 00:16:08.10\00:16:09.56 Well, living in the country is the ideal, 00:16:09.60\00:16:12.93 but not everyone can live in the country. 00:16:12.97\00:16:16.40 It's not possible for all of you 00:16:16.44\00:16:19.31 to move to the country. 00:16:19.34\00:16:21.01 So what are some things that we can do? 00:16:21.04\00:16:23.45 Well, wherever you live, 00:16:23.48\00:16:25.38 find someplace in nature to exercise. 00:16:25.41\00:16:28.92 I know recently, we were in Bulgaria, 00:16:28.95\00:16:32.85 and I thought, "How can I get my exercise 00:16:32.89\00:16:35.26 and get some good fresh air?" 00:16:35.29\00:16:37.53 Well, we found a beautiful park, 00:16:37.56\00:16:40.10 not far from our hotel, 00:16:40.13\00:16:41.93 and every day, we were out there walking and exercising. 00:16:41.96\00:16:46.40 Taking those deep breaths, 00:16:46.43\00:16:48.54 and imbibing the good fresh air from the trees 00:16:48.57\00:16:52.47 because there's health-giving, life-giving properties 00:16:52.51\00:16:55.68 in those trees. 00:16:55.71\00:16:57.05 And so every day, we were walking in the park. 00:16:57.11\00:16:59.85 So find a park 00:16:59.88\00:17:01.28 where you can just get that good fresh air. 00:17:01.32\00:17:05.85 Walk out among the trees 00:17:05.89\00:17:07.72 because the trees actually purify the air. 00:17:07.76\00:17:11.89 Have you ever thought of that? 00:17:11.93\00:17:13.43 Just to put a tree even in your backyard 00:17:13.46\00:17:16.33 will help you to have good fresh air. 00:17:16.36\00:17:19.67 There are health-giving, life-giving properties 00:17:19.70\00:17:22.97 in the trees. 00:17:23.00\00:17:24.34 In fact, we are told that there are health-giving, 00:17:24.37\00:17:26.51 life-giving properties in the balsam of the pine. 00:17:26.54\00:17:30.45 So just a pine tree will give you 00:17:30.48\00:17:33.01 that good cleansing of your lungs. 00:17:33.05\00:17:37.29 And spend more time outside, take a walk after you eat. 00:17:37.32\00:17:42.72 So after you've had your lunch, take a good walk. 00:17:42.76\00:17:46.36 According to one government estimate, 00:17:46.39\00:17:49.16 the average American spends 90% of his or her life indoors. 00:17:49.20\00:17:55.14 Wow. That's only 10% going outside. 00:17:55.17\00:18:00.41 We need to have an outdoor life more than an indoor life. 00:18:00.44\00:18:04.91 God created us to be outdoors. 00:18:04.95\00:18:07.65 And fresh air is health promoting 00:18:07.68\00:18:10.82 while constant air conditioning, my friends, 00:18:10.85\00:18:13.62 is not the best. 00:18:13.69\00:18:15.36 So open those windows, 00:18:15.39\00:18:18.43 get that fresh air at night when you sleep, 00:18:18.46\00:18:21.46 open the windows, don't close them up tight. 00:18:21.50\00:18:24.77 Open the widows. 00:18:24.80\00:18:26.13 Open the windows and even the blinds. 00:18:26.17\00:18:28.30 So many people close their blinds 00:18:28.34\00:18:32.14 because they don't want that sun 00:18:32.17\00:18:33.98 to fade the furniture or get into the house, 00:18:34.01\00:18:36.75 but we need to open the windows and open the blinds. 00:18:36.78\00:18:40.72 And wherever you live, 00:18:40.75\00:18:43.22 keep the air in your house circulating 00:18:43.25\00:18:46.12 by just having the air flow through 00:18:46.15\00:18:48.59 by opening those windows. 00:18:48.62\00:18:50.93 And sleep with the windows open, 00:18:50.96\00:18:53.19 it's going to help you immensely. 00:18:53.23\00:18:55.83 Another little tip for you is to have some houseplants 00:18:55.86\00:19:00.57 because again, you're going to get that good oxygen 00:19:00.60\00:19:03.67 from those houseplants. 00:19:03.74\00:19:06.91 A study of 647 grade-schoolers found 00:19:06.94\00:19:10.91 that students who grew plants scored about 12% higher 00:19:10.98\00:19:15.65 on academic tests, compared with those who didn't. 00:19:15.68\00:19:19.89 So your children are even going to score higher 00:19:19.92\00:19:23.36 on their tests at school if you just give them 00:19:23.39\00:19:26.83 a little plant to put in their room. 00:19:26.86\00:19:29.63 And then, my friends, 00:19:29.66\00:19:31.00 don't allow smoking inside your house. 00:19:31.03\00:19:33.27 Just graciously ask, if someone is smoking, 00:19:33.34\00:19:37.11 "Would you mind smoking outside?" 00:19:37.14\00:19:39.04 Because according to the 2014 Surgeon General's Report, 00:19:39.07\00:19:43.55 there were more than 20 million smoking-related deaths 00:19:43.58\00:19:46.92 in the United States since 1964. 00:19:46.95\00:19:50.49 2.5 million were among non-smokers 00:19:50.52\00:19:54.42 who died from exposure to second-hand smoke. 00:19:54.46\00:19:57.66 We know that second-hand smoke is detrimental today. 00:19:57.69\00:20:02.73 And so we want to get rid of that smoke 00:20:02.76\00:20:08.17 even if it's second-hand smoke. 00:20:08.20\00:20:10.31 And then eat some wholesome nutritious foods. 00:20:10.37\00:20:13.58 What does that have to do with good fresh air?
