" 00:02:57.61\00:02:58.94 Excellent choice for a Memory Text 00:02:58.97\00:03:01.24 and when you look at the word: Covetousness, 00:03:01.28\00:03:04.61 it says here in the Lesson, 00:03:04.68\00:03:06.58 it has been defined as an inordinate desire 00:03:06.61\00:03:10.32 for wealth or possessions 00:03:10.35\00:03:12.55 that really don't belong to you. 00:03:12.59\00:03:15.62 And according to the Lesson it says, 00:03:15.66\00:03:18.63 "It's so damaging 00:03:18.69\00:03:20.03 that God chose to warn against it 00:03:20.06\00:03:22.56 in His great moral law. " 00:03:22.60\00:03:24.57 As a matter of fact, 00:03:24.60\00:03:26.50 covetousness is frequently listed in the... 00:03:26.53\00:03:29.57 those terrible sins 00:03:29.60\00:03:32.31 that bring about God's wrath for those sinners. 00:03:32.34\00:03:37.18 In this week's Lesson, 00:03:37.21\00:03:39.01 we're going to look at examples of just how bad this is. 00:03:39.05\00:03:42.18 So, I encourage you to follow along 00:03:42.22\00:03:44.25 and I hope you have your Bible with you 00:03:44.29\00:03:46.19 because we're going to share some Scriptures with you 00:03:46.22\00:03:48.09 that we hope you will continue to study. 00:03:48.12\00:03:50.89 Sunday's Lesson is entitled: The Ultimate Original Sin... 00:03:50.93\00:03:55.90 The Ultimate Original Sin? 00:03:55.93\00:03:57.67 Where does this begin? 00:03:57.70\00:03:59.40 And when we call "original" 00:03:59.43\00:04:01.30 that means there was not one before it. 00:04:01.34\00:04:03.24 That means there was one right after this one. 00:04:03.27\00:04:06.01 This takes us to talk about 00:04:06.04\00:04:08.44 an angel that was a covering Cherub... Lucifer 00:04:08.48\00:04:12.51 and before I go to the Scripture pointed out in the Lesson, 00:04:12.55\00:04:16.99 I'd like to back up a little 00:04:17.02\00:04:18.69 and bring you first to Ezekiel chapter 28 00:04:18.72\00:04:21.92 to establish that he was created perfect. 00:04:21.96\00:04:25.09 In Ezekiel 28... using the symbol of the King of Tyre, 00:04:25.13\00:04:30.10 it talks about Lucifer 00:04:30.17\00:04:31.73 and you know it's talking about him 00:04:31.77\00:04:33.64 because of the context and the words used. 00:04:33.67\00:04:36.64 Notice, Ezekiel 28:14 and 15, 00:04:36.71\00:04:39.31 "You were the anointed cherub who covers; 00:04:39.34\00:04:42.81 I established you; 00:04:42.84\00:04:44.55 you were on the holy mountain of God; 00:04:44.58\00:04:47.98 you walked back and forth in the midst of the fiery stones. " 00:04:48.02\00:04:52.15 Notice... verse 15, 00:04:52.19\00:04:54.02 "You were perfect in your ways 00:04:54.06\00:04:57.63 from the day you were created, 00:04:57.66\00:05:01.23 till iniquity was found in you. " 00:05:01.26\00:05:04.77 And we're going to talk about that "iniquity" in a moment 00:05:04.80\00:05:08.57 but notice that it says, "He was created perfect. " 00:05:08.60\00:05:12.34 That means he was perfect from the day he was created 00:05:12.37\00:05:16.61 and as long as it was until iniquity was found in him... 00:05:16.64\00:05:20.62 and I like to highlight the fact that God did not put 00:05:20.65\00:05:24.59 any defect in Lucifer. 00:05:24.62\00:05:29.02 He was perfect... 00:05:29.06\00:05:31.19 perfect... and the word that is used here 00:05:31.23\00:05:33.73 that is translated "was found" 00:05:33.76\00:05:36.56 is a Hebrew word that when you look deep into it, 00:05:36.60\00:05:41.50 it is as if you investigate deeply 00:05:41.54\00:05:44.84 and you come to a conclusion based on what you found then. 00:05:44.87\00:05:50.41 In essence, it is saying to us 00:05:50.45\00:05:52.28 that Lucifer was perfect from the very second he was created 00:05:52.31\00:05:57.72 and continued to be perfect until sin arose in his mind... 00:05:57.75\00:06:03.12 he was created with freedom of choice 00:06:03.16\00:06:06.63 and he chose to sin on his own. 00:06:06.66\00:06:10.00 God did not put a... "You will fail after so many days... 00:06:10.03\00:06:14.74 you will fail... " 00:06:14.77\00:06:16.10 or... "sin will... will pop up in you... " 00:06:16.14\00:06:19.74 or... or... or "grow in you... " 00:06:19.77\00:06:21.94 because God put something there. 00:06:21.98\00:06:24.11 It was of his own doing. 00:06:24.15\00:06:26.21 And there's really no explanation 00:06:26.25\00:06:28.58 because he was in a perfect environment. 00:06:28.62\00:06:30.99 Everything was perfect around him, 00:06:31.02\00:06:33.19 there was no reason for what took place. 00:06:33.22\00:06:36.29 In Isaiah chapter 14, 00:06:36.32\00:06:38.19 the Lesson brings out verses 12 through 14 00:06:38.23\00:06:41.16 that we're going to look at and it says, 00:06:41.23\00:06:44.57 "How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, 00:06:44.60\00:06:47.90 son of the morning! 00:06:47.94\00:06:49.27 How you are cut down to the ground, 00:06:49.30\00:06:51.91 you who weakened the nations!" 00:06:51.94\00:06:54.54 So, we are here to understand 00:06:54.58\00:06:57.08 that this original sin took place in heaven. 00:06:57.11\00:07:01.38 Notice verse 13, 00:07:01.42\00:07:03.02 "For you have said in your heart: 00:07:03.05\00:07:04.49 'I will ascend into heaven, 00:07:04.52\00:07:07.19 I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; 00:07:07.22\00:07:11.13 I will also sit on the mount of the congregation 00:07:11.16\00:07:15.03 on the farthest sides of the north; 00:07:15.06\00:07:17.43 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, 00:07:17.47\00:07:21.14 I will be like the Most High. '" 00:07:21.17\00:07:24.34 Did he really want to be like the Most High? 00:07:24.37\00:07:27.04 The Bible says that God is love. 00:07:27.08\00:07:29.31 So, he desired something that did not belong to him, 00:07:29.34\00:07:32.85 he's not worthy of it 00:07:32.88\00:07:34.68 because only God is worthy to sit on that throne. 00:07:34.72\00:07:38.32 So, this is the origin... 00:07:38.35\00:07:40.82 or where the original covetousness began. 00:07:40.86\00:07:45.26 In the Lesson, I read to you from there... 00:07:45.29\00:07:48.50 it has a quote from Patriarchs and Prophets, 00:07:48.53\00:07:51.70 page 35, 00:07:51.73\00:07:53.07 "Not content with his position, 00:07:53.10\00:07:55.64 though honored above the heavenly host, 00:07:55.67\00:07:58.77 he ventured to covet homage due alone to the Creator. 00:07:58.81\00:08:03.01 Instead of seeking to make God supreme in the affections 00:08:03.04\00:08:07.22 and allegiance of all created beings, 00:08:07.25\00:08:09.78 it was his endeavor to secure their service and loyalty 00:08:09.85\00:08:14.89 to himself. 00:08:14.92\00:08:16.29 And coveting the glory with which the infinite Father 00:08:16.32\00:08:21.86 had invested His Son, 00:08:21.90\00:08:23.97 this prince of angels aspired to power 00:08:24.00\00:08:29.44 that was the prerogative of Christ alone. " 00:08:29.47\00:08:32.91 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:08:32.97\00:08:34.31 Dinzey: He coveted something 00:08:34.34\00:08:35.68 that he could not possibly have... 00:08:35.71\00:08:37.18 it was not his... 00:08:37.21\00:08:38.78 it would never be his 00:08:38.81\00:08:40.32 for he was created an angel and he's below the Creator. 00:08:40.35\00:08:45.99 Ephesians chapter 5 verse 5 tells us this, 00:08:46.02\00:08:49.19 "For this, you know, that no fornicator, 00:08:49.22\00:08:52.36 unclean person, 00:08:52.39\00:08:53.96 nor covetous man, 00:08:54.00\00:08:55.53 or woman... 00:08:55.56\00:08:56.90 who is an idolater, 00:08:56.93\00:08:58.27 has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. " 00:08:58.30\00:09:03.30 So, when we look at this issue of covetous 00:09:03.34\00:09:07.58 and we're talking about managing finances... 00:09:07.61\00:09:11.85 managing things. 00:09:11.88\00:09:13.21 Here we had that covetousness... 00:09:13.25\00:09:15.88 you... if this is the way you live, 00:09:15.92\00:09:18.45 you will not have the inheritance 00:09:18.49\00:09:20.96 of the Kingdom of God. 00:09:20.99\00:09:22.32 Colossians chapter 3 verses 5 and 6 00:09:22.36\00:09:25.29 brings more for our understanding. 00:09:25.33\00:09:28.20 "Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: 00:09:28.26\00:09:32.33 fornication, uncleanness, 00:09:32.40\00:09:34.84 passion, evil desire, 00:09:34.87\00:09:37.24 and covetousness, which is idolatry. " 00:09:37.27\00:09:40.01 This is idolatry. 00:09:40.08\00:09:41.41 "Because of these things 00:09:41.44\00:09:43.31 the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience 00:09:43.35\00:09:48.08 in which you yourselves once walked 00:09:48.12\00:09:50.69 when you lived in them. " 00:09:50.72\00:09:52.42 So, Paul here is addressing the Colossians 00:09:52.45\00:09:55.32 and he's telling them to beware of this 00:09:55.36\00:09:58.19 because the wrath of God is coming upon those 00:09:58.23\00:10:01.16 that have this practice. 00:10:01.20\00:10:02.70 And you know, in this sin, 00:10:02.76\00:10:04.20 is something that is not necessarily seen right away 00:10:04.23\00:10:08.57 outwardly, 00:10:08.60\00:10:10.34 it's something that you can do in your mind. 00:10:10.37\00:10:13.07 It is dangerous and it is a poison. 00:10:13.11\00:10:16.38 Now, Paul does present to us better choices. 00:10:16.41\00:10:20.02 Colossians chapter 3, we'll begin in verse 8, 00:10:20.08\00:10:24.02 "But now you yourselves are to put off all these: 00:10:24.09\00:10:27.99 anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language 00:10:28.02\00:10:31.59 out of your speech. 00:10:31.63\00:10:32.96 Do not lie one to another, 00:10:32.99\00:10:34.60 since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 00:10:34.66\00:10:37.37 and have put on the new man 00:10:37.40\00:10:39.43 who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him 00:10:39.47\00:10:43.81 who created Him... " 00:10:43.84\00:10:45.64 moving to verse 12, 00:10:45.67\00:10:47.44 we have, "Therefore, as the elect of God, 00:10:47.48\00:10:51.25 holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, 00:10:51.28\00:10:55.05 kindness, humility, meekness, long-suffering; 00:10:55.08\00:10:58.95 bearing with one another, 00:10:58.99\00:11:01.09 and forgiving one another, 00:11:01.12\00:11:03.12 if anyone has a complaint against another... " 00:11:03.16\00:11:06.13 what should you do? 00:11:06.16\00:11:07.63 "Even as Christ forgave you, 00:11:07.66\00:11:09.56 so you also must do. 00:11:09.60\00:11:12.20 But above all these things put on love, 00:11:12.23\00:11:15.10 which is the bond of perfection. 00:11:15.14\00:11:17.37 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, 00:11:17.41\00:11:20.88 to which also you were called... " 00:11:20.91\00:11:23.95 So, we see here that we need to replace this covetousness 00:11:23.98\00:11:28.28 which is a poison that will eat away at you. 00:11:28.32\00:11:33.02 You know, it's interesting 00:11:33.05\00:11:34.79 that the Scriptures point to us 00:11:34.82\00:11:36.56 that this was one of the things 00:11:36.59\00:11:38.23 that Paul had a... a... a challenge with. 00:11:38.26\00:11:41.80 He said, "I would not have known sin 00:11:41.83\00:11:44.70 except the law said, 'Thou shall not covet. '" 00:11:44.73\00:11:47.74 So, coveting is something that is dangerous 00:11:47.77\00:11:50.71 and Satan seeks to work this idea 00:11:50.74\00:11:55.31 or put this in the minds of every one of us 00:11:55.34\00:11:57.91 and, you know, he puts thoughts in our minds. 00:11:57.98\00:12:00.52 "Don't you want what he has? 00:12:00.55\00:12:02.52 Don't you want what she has?" 00:12:02.55\00:12:04.45 "You know you can do better than what you're doing, 00:12:04.49\00:12:07.49 look at what they are driving... 00:12:07.52\00:12:08.86 look at what they are wearing. " 00:12:08.89\00:12:10.23 And so, this is a dangerous, dangerous thing. 00:12:10.26\00:12:13.13 And notice that you identify with the devil 00:12:13.16\00:12:17.10 desiring something that does not belong to you. 00:12:17.13\00:12:21.04 Now, we move to 1st Timothy chapter 6... 00:12:21.07\00:12:24.77 1st Timothy chapter 6 and the question is, 00:12:24.81\00:12:28.18 how can focusing on what Paul writes here 00:12:28.21\00:12:31.55 help protect us from covetousness? 00:12:31.58\00:12:33.78 1st Timothy chapter 6 verse 6, 00:12:33.82\00:12:36.02 "Now godliness with contentment is great gain. " 00:12:36.05\00:12:41.26 Godliness with contentment is great gain 00:12:41.29\00:12:44.09 and we have much to be thankful for. 00:12:44.13\00:12:46.90 God is so good to us 00:12:46.93\00:12:49.00 that He gives to us that which will bring us happiness. 00:12:49.03\00:12:52.50 And it says in verse 7, 00:12:52.53\00:12:54.44 "For we brought nothing into this world, 00:12:54.50\00:12:57.54 and it is certain we can carry nothing out. " 00:12:57.57\00:13:02.54 So, this is a fact, you know, 00:13:02.61\00:13:04.68 our lives do not consist in the things that we possess. 00:13:04.71\00:13:09.52 I read to you now from Romans chapter 7 00:13:09.58\00:13:12.12 which I mentioned earlier, 00:13:12.15\00:13:14.26 Romans chapter 7 verse 7, 00:13:14.29\00:13:16.39 "For what shall we say then? 00:13:16.42\00:13:18.43 Is the law sin? 00:13:18.46\00:13:19.79 Certainly not! 00:13:19.83\00:13:21.16 On the contrary, 00:13:21.20\00:13:22.53 I would not have known sin except through the law. 00:13:22.56\00:13:25.87 For I would not have known covetousness 00:13:25.90\00:13:29.40 unless the law had said, 'You shall not covet. '" 00:13:29.47\00:13:32.27 You remember that Paul said, 00:13:32.31\00:13:33.78 "Concerning the law, blameless... " 00:13:33.81\00:13:36.68 but this is something, 00:13:36.71\00:13:38.61 I mean, the outward life of Paul... 00:13:38.65\00:13:41.55 "Hey, he is blameless... 00:13:41.58\00:13:43.42 doesn't say anything wrong, 00:13:43.45\00:13:45.25 doesn't do anything wrong, 00:13:45.29\00:13:46.89 doesn't even dress wrong, 00:13:46.92\00:13:48.46 he's blameless. " 00:13:48.49\00:13:50.43 But Paul understood 00:13:50.46\00:13:52.39 that he too needed the grace of Christ 00:13:52.43\00:13:54.96 because in him was covetousness. 00:13:55.00\00:13:57.43 So, beware of covetousness. 00:13:57.47\00:14:00.14 Jill: Thank you so much Brother Johnny, 00:14:00.17\00:14:02.37 what a great lesson! 00:14:02.40\00:14:03.74 Great foundation for this entire lesson on covetousness 00:14:03.77\00:14:07.21 and that origin with Lucifer in heaven. 00:14:07.24\00:14:09.61 I'm Jill Morikone... on Monday we look at: 00:14:09.64\00:14:11.95 An Accursed Thing in the Camp. 00:14:11.98\00:14:15.18 I can hardly get that out, 00:14:15.22\00:14:16.69 An Accursed Thing in the Camp. 00:14:16.72\00:14:20.96 We're looking, of course, at Achan's covetousness 00:14:20.99\00:14:24.39 and we're going to the book of Joshua 00:14:24.43\00:14:25.99 so, turn there with me. 00:14:26.03\00:14:27.73 We have ten takeaways from Achan's sin there. 00:14:27.76\00:14:32.70 Before we get to the battle at Ai, 00:14:32.73\00:14:35.24 just a little back story. 00:14:35.27\00:14:36.60 Remember they wandered... the children of Israel, 00:14:36.64\00:14:38.24 40 years in the wilderness. 00:14:38.27\00:14:39.61 They crossed the Jordan River on dry ground 00:14:39.64\00:14:43.21 by a miracle from God. 00:14:43.24\00:14:44.71 The walls of Jericho had come tumbling down 00:14:44.75\00:14:48.68 by a miracle from God. 00:14:48.72\00:14:51.62 Now we pick up and go into the command. 00:14:51.65\00:14:55.22 This is actually... just before the walls of Jericho came down. 00:14:55.26\00:14:58.93 God through Joshua had given a command to the people 00:14:58.96\00:15:02.63 and we'll read that because that's important to the story. 00:15:02.66\00:15:05.13 We're in Joshua 6 verses 17 through 19, 00:15:05.20\00:15:09.17 Joshua 6:17 through 19, 00:15:09.20\00:15:11.41 "Now the city... " this is taking about Jericho, 00:15:11.44\00:15:14.38 "shall be doomed by the Lord to destruction, 00:15:14.41\00:15:16.78 it and all who are in it. 00:15:16.81\00:15:18.25 Only Rahab the harlot shall live, 00:15:18.31\00:15:20.48 she and all who are with her in the house, 00:15:20.52\00:15:22.78 because she hid the messengers that we sent. 00:15:22.82\00:15:25.05 And you, by all means 00:15:25.09\00:15:26.96 abstain from the 00:15:27.02\00:15:28.79 accursed things... " 00:15:28.82\00:15:30.53 we're going to hear that word a lot... 00:15:30.56\00:15:31.89 "lest you become accursed 00:15:31.93\00:15:34.03 when you take of the accursed things, 00:15:34.10\00:15:36.97 and make the camp of Israel a curse... " 00:15:37.00\00:15:39.80 four times that word is used there... 00:15:39.83\00:15:42.20 "and trouble it... 00:15:42.24\00:15:43.57 But all the silver and gold, and vessels of bronze and iron, 00:15:43.61\00:15:46.41 are consecrated to the LORD; 00:15:46.44\00:15:48.04 they shall come into the treasury of the LORD." 00:15:48.08\00:15:51.48 Clearly, it's delineated what they need to do. 00:15:51.51\00:15:54.65 Everything is to be destroyed. 00:15:54.68\00:15:56.99 Nothing is to be spared, 00:15:57.02\00:15:59.59 the only thing is Rahab and her house 00:15:59.65\00:16:02.52 and then the silver and gold was to go into the treasury. 00:16:02.56\00:16:05.93 Takeaway Number 1: 00:16:05.99\00:16:07.73 Beware lest you ignore God's instructions. 00:16:07.76\00:16:12.83 This is a heavy topic for me, this entire Study. 00:16:12.87\00:16:16.47 Beware lest you ignore God's instructions... 00:16:16.50\00:16:20.01 God gives clear instructions... His Ten Commandment Law, 00:16:20.04\00:16:23.71 His Word clearly tells us what we're supposed to do 00:16:23.75\00:16:27.28 as Christians today in these last days. 00:16:27.32\00:16:30.82 Beware if you ignore those instructions. 00:16:30.85\00:16:34.32 Let's jump into this 00:16:34.39\00:16:35.99 and now we're going over to Joshua chapter 7 verse 1, 00:16:36.02\00:16:39.56 "But the children of Israel committed a trespass" 00:16:39.59\00:16:43.10 that word "trespass" means to act under cover... 00:16:43.13\00:16:45.90 underhandedly... 00:16:45.93\00:16:47.27 treacherously... 00:16:47.30\00:16:48.64 they committed a trespass regarding the accursed things 00:16:48.67\00:16:52.34 the things that were supposed to beware of... 00:16:52.37\00:16:54.18 they were supposed to leave alone. 00:16:54.24\00:16:55.58 "For Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, 00:16:55.61\00:16:57.88 the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, 00:16:57.91\00:17:00.25 took of the accursed things; 00:17:00.28\00:17:02.42 so the anger of the LORD burned against... " Achan... 00:17:02.45\00:17:05.25 is that what it say? 00:17:05.32\00:17:06.65 "the anger of the LORD 00:17:06.69\00:17:08.02 burned against the children of Israel. " 00:17:08.06\00:17:11.09 Takeaway Number 2: 00:17:11.13\00:17:12.69 Beware lest your sin affects others. 00:17:12.73\00:17:18.53 Panel: Hmmm... 00:17:18.57\00:17:19.90 Jill: It was Achan's sin, was it not? 00:17:19.93\00:17:21.27 Achan is the one who committed the sin. 00:17:21.30\00:17:22.84 He is the one who kept the accursed things 00:17:22.87\00:17:24.54 and yet the anger of God burned not just against Achan, 00:17:24.57\00:17:28.21 but against the children of Israel. 00:17:28.24\00:17:31.11 We think... "it only affects me... my sin... 00:17:31.18\00:17:33.85 it doesn't bother anybody else. 00:17:33.88\00:17:35.55 It's private... it's personal... 00:17:35.58\00:17:37.19 it's not impacting anybody... " 00:17:37.22\00:17:38.59 no, beware lest your sin affects someone else. 00:17:38.62\00:17:43.43 Let's read verse 2, Joshua 7 verse 2, 00:17:43.46\00:17:46.80 "Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, 00:17:46.83\00:17:50.10 and spoke to them saying, 00:17:50.13\00:17:51.63 'Go up and spy out the country. ' 00:17:51.67\00:17:53.54 So the men went up and spied out Ai. " 00:17:53.57\00:17:55.40 Verse 3, 00:17:55.44\00:17:56.77 "And they returned to Joshua... " what did they say? 00:17:56.81\00:17:58.57 'Do not let all the people go up... '" 00:17:58.61\00:18:00.48 we got this... 00:18:00.51\00:18:01.84 "let only two or three thousand men go into battle. 00:18:01.88\00:18:05.75 Do not weary the people, for the people of Ai are few. " 00:18:05.78\00:18:09.95 Takeaway Number 3: 00:18:09.98\00:18:12.72 Beware when you fail to consult God. 00:18:12.75\00:18:17.53 It was very clear that Joshua had had an encounter 00:18:17.59\00:18:20.83 with the pre-incarnate Christ 00:18:20.86\00:18:22.23 before the walls of Jericho came tumbling down, right? 00:18:22.26\00:18:25.73 He received instruction from God... 00:18:25.77\00:18:27.97 he sought the Lord... 00:18:28.00\00:18:29.44 "How are we to overcome this city?" 00:18:29.47\00:18:32.21 In this case, it doesn't say Joshua went to the Lord, 00:18:32.24\00:18:35.31 it doesn't say he asked for counsel from God 00:18:35.34\00:18:38.18 on how to attack Ai. 00:18:38.21\00:18:40.52 He sent some people to spy out the land. 00:18:40.55\00:18:43.65 Beware when you fail to consult God. 00:18:43.69\00:18:46.59 Let's read verse 4, Joshua 7 verse 4, 00:18:46.62\00:18:49.52 "So about three thousand men went up from there 00:18:49.56\00:18:52.93 from the people, 00:18:52.96\00:18:54.30 but they fled before the men of Ai. 00:18:54.33\00:18:56.87 And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six men, 00:18:56.90\00:19:01.00 for they chased them from before the gate 00:19:01.04\00:19:02.80 as far as Shebarim, 00:19:02.84\00:19:04.17 and struck them down on the descent; 00:19:04.21\00:19:05.67 therefore the hearts of the people melted 00:19:05.71\00:19:08.41 and became like water. " 00:19:08.44\00:19:11.21 Takeaway Number 4: 00:19:11.25\00:19:12.65 Beware of self-confidence in the battle. 00:19:12.68\00:19:16.55 They took the 3,000 men... "We got this... 00:19:16.58\00:19:19.65 there's no issue... " and what happened? 00:19:19.69\00:19:22.69 They turned and fled 00:19:22.72\00:19:25.89 and 36 innocent men lost their lives. 00:19:25.93\00:19:30.80 How many times have I in my own experience, 00:19:30.83\00:19:34.77 I know I've done this. 00:19:34.80\00:19:36.14 "I've got it, God... I got it. " 00:19:36.17\00:19:37.51 Self-confidence... 00:19:37.54\00:19:39.51 "I really don't need anything. " 00:19:39.54\00:19:41.14 Beware of self-confidence. 00:19:41.18\00:19:43.24 Now, let's go after this and what happened? 00:19:43.28\00:19:45.58 Let's see what happens next in verse 6, 00:19:45.61\00:19:47.88 "Joshua tore his clothes, 00:19:47.92\00:19:50.29 fell on his face... fell on the earth... 00:19:50.35\00:19:53.89 to the earth on his face 00:19:53.92\00:19:55.26 before the ark of the LORD until evening... " 00:19:55.29\00:19:56.76 he and the others of Israel 00:19:56.79\00:19:58.29 and they put dust on their heads. 00:19:58.33\00:20:00.06 We see here... repentance. 00:20:00.10\00:20:01.43 Joshua and the Elders of Israel, 00:20:01.46\00:20:03.77 we see this repentance. 00:20:03.80\00:20:05.27 Now, maybe he didn't consult the Lord before going to attack Ai, 00:20:05.30\00:20:08.07 but he's surely consulting the Lord now. 00:20:08.10\00:20:10.54 What does he pray? 00:20:10.57\00:20:12.27 Verse 7, Joshua said, 00:20:12.31\00:20:13.98 "Alas, Lord GOD, why have you brought this people 00:20:14.01\00:20:17.78 over the Jordan at all... why?" 00:20:17.81\00:20:19.85 Have you ever done that? 00:20:19.88\00:20:21.22 Have you ever been involved in difficulty 00:20:21.25\00:20:24.52 and it seems like the enemy overpowers you 00:20:24.55\00:20:27.69 and you're in distress and... "Why God? 00:20:27.72\00:20:30.79 Why is this happening? Why?" 00:20:30.83\00:20:32.23 This is Joshua... "God, why? 00:20:32.26\00:20:33.60 Why are your people defeated? Why?" 00:20:33.63\00:20:36.36 "Why did You do this? To destroy us? 00:20:36.40\00:20:39.13 Oh, that we had been content, 00:20:39.17\00:20:40.60 and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan! 00:20:40.64\00:20:42.10 O LORD, what shall I say when Israel turns its back 00:20:42.14\00:20:44.64 from its enemies? 00:20:44.67\00:20:46.01 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land 00:20:46.04\00:20:48.04 will hear it, and surround us, 00:20:48.08\00:20:49.41 and cut off our name from the earth. 00:20:49.44\00:20:51.21 What will You do for Your great name?" 00:20:51.25\00:20:53.55 "God, it's not just about me... 00:20:53.58\00:20:54.95 it's not just about the 36 men... 00:20:54.98\00:20:56.32 God, it's about Your name... " 00:29:30.13\00:29:33.64 You know, the Writer of the Lesson, Elder Reid, 00:29:33.67\00:29:36.44 pointed out some very significant questions. 00:29:36.47\00:29:39.17 "What did Mary do that attracted so much attention 00:29:39.21\00:29:42.34 during the feast?" 00:29:42.38\00:29:43.71 Now, I want you to get this, 00:29:43.75\00:29:45.08 What did Mary do that attracted so much attention to the feast? 00:29:45.11\00:29:47.82 What she did attracted attention not to her 00:29:47.85\00:29:50.35 but to the One that was anointed. 00:29:50.39\00:29:52.35 When we do what God calls us to do, 00:29:52.39\00:29:54.29 it will attract attention to the One that must be exalted... 00:29:54.32\00:29:58.29 so, the only anointed One. 00:29:58.33\00:30:00.00 We are not called to attract attention to ourselves 00:30:00.03\00:30:02.30 like Judas did, 00:30:02.33\00:30:03.67 we are called to be the "Mary" at the feet of Jesus... 00:30:03.70\00:30:06.13 pouring out our best on the Master... 00:30:06.17\00:30:08.47 attracting all the joys and all the sorrows 00:30:08.50\00:30:12.77 and all the glad tidings to the One 00:30:12.81\00:30:14.71 who can deliver us... 00:30:14.74\00:30:16.44 the One who can bless us... 00:30:16.51\00:30:17.85 the One who can take our lives from a downtrodden state 00:30:17.88\00:30:21.18 to an exalted one only for His glory. 00:30:21.22\00:30:23.99 But how did Judas react? 00:30:24.02\00:30:26.25 "This money could have been used for better reasons. " 00:30:26.29\00:30:28.89 Watch out when people make majors out of minors. 00:30:28.92\00:30:32.29 Now, this was not a minor moment 00:30:32.33\00:30:34.56 but Judas decided to point this major... 00:30:34.63\00:30:37.43 this major service of anointing 00:30:37.47\00:30:39.87 preparing Jesus for His burial. 00:30:39.90\00:30:42.27 This was greater than just breaking a bottle 00:30:42.30\00:30:45.04 and pouring out ointment. 00:30:45.07\00:30:46.41 This was a symbol that she was there for Christ 00:30:46.44\00:30:49.91 and that's why when Jesus was raised, 00:30:49.94\00:30:52.18 all of the fear in the world could not get Mary to 00:30:52.21\00:30:55.05 to... to abandon the tomb. 00:30:55.08\00:30:56.92 "Where... where have they laid my Lord?" 00:30:56.95\00:30:59.52 And she waited there 00:30:59.55\00:31:00.96 and was the first to embrace her Lord. 00:31:00.99\00:31:02.92 How beautiful was her dedication to Christ 00:31:02.96\00:31:05.93 but Jesus... even calmly rebuked to Judas, 00:31:05.96\00:31:08.86 didn't even make Judas an example. 00:31:08.90\00:31:10.93 He chose to turn away that precious moment 00:31:10.97\00:31:14.14 to a man whose heart was so destitute of joy 00:31:14.17\00:31:17.31 and dedication to his Lord 00:31:17.34\00:31:18.97 which tells me... in moments when people turn the moment away 00:31:19.04\00:31:23.55 from the chief focus of the moment, 00:31:23.58\00:31:25.55 don't engage them 00:31:25.58\00:31:26.98 to rob that moment of the great blessing that's there. 00:31:27.02\00:31:29.68 We could argue with people over something 00:31:29.72\00:31:31.72 that will take the glory from Christ 00:31:31.75\00:31:33.39 and put the glory on themselves. 00:31:33.42\00:31:35.32 Don't allow those who re-direct the praise of God 00:31:35.36\00:31:37.96 to a moment of tragedy. 00:31:37.99\00:31:40.10 Verse 5 and 6, we find the focal point of the story... 00:31:40.13\00:31:43.60 "Why was this fragrant ointment not sold for 300 denarii?" 00:31:43.63\00:31:47.04 He even gave a price. 00:31:47.10\00:31:48.44 He said, "This is worth a whole lot more than this moment. " 00:31:48.47\00:31:50.64 Really? 00:31:50.67\00:31:52.01 Is the oil worth more than the Lord? 00:31:52.04\00:31:54.01 Absolutely not. 00:31:54.04\00:31:55.38 The value was not in the cost of the oil 00:31:55.41\00:31:58.05 but in the limitless cost of the Savior 00:31:58.11\00:32:00.62 and he missed that. 00:32:00.65\00:32:01.98 Panel: That's right. 00:32:02.02\00:32:03.35 Lomacang: How can you be with someone every day 00:32:03.39\00:32:04.82 and miss their inestimable value? 00:32:04.85\00:32:07.56 Wow! 00:32:07.59\00:32:08.92 He missed that moment. 00:32:08.96\00:32:10.29 The heart of Judas... Matthew chapter 26 verses 14 to 16, 00:32:10.33\00:32:13.66 "Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, 00:32:13.70\00:32:17.03 went to the chief priests and said, 00:32:17.07\00:32:18.77 'What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?' 00:32:18.80\00:32:22.44 And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. 00:32:22.47\00:32:26.24 So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him. " 00:32:26.27\00:32:29.98 That was really the motive behind this moment. 00:32:30.01\00:32:32.38 "I have to find a way to betray Him. " 00:32:32.41\00:32:34.68 And that's why we find in Philippians chapter 3 00:32:34.75\00:32:37.02 verses 18 and 19, 00:32:37.05\00:32:38.39 "For many walk, of whom I have told you often, 00:32:38.42\00:32:40.82 and now tell you even weeping, 00:32:40.86\00:32:42.49 that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ... " 00:32:42.52\00:32:45.86 how can you be with Jesus 00:32:45.89\00:32:47.23 and end up becoming an enemy of Christ? 00:32:47.26\00:32:48.96 "Whose end is destruction, 00:32:49.00\00:32:50.40 whose god is their belly, 00:32:50.43\00:32:51.80 and whose glory is in their shame... 00:32:51.83\00:32:53.80 who set their minds on earthly things. " 00:32:53.84\00:32:55.70 So, we have here the... the... the examples from Judas. 00:32:55.74\00:32:59.74 We must not allow money to be above our allegiance to Jesus. 00:32:59.77\00:33:02.94 1st Timothy 3 verse 8, 00:33:02.98\00:33:04.68 "Not greedy for filthy lucre... " 00:33:04.71\00:33:06.58 whereas the New King James says, 00:33:06.61\00:33:08.42 "Not greedy for money. " 00:33:08.48\00:33:09.82 There are some people that are close to Christ... 00:33:09.85\00:33:11.59 even claim to be ministers of Christ 00:33:11.62\00:33:13.59 but the focus is money. 00:33:13.62\00:33:15.22 They use God for financial gain 00:33:15.26\00:33:17.13 thus the many ministries that we find on television 00:33:17.16\00:33:20.53 and I want to say this... 00:33:20.60\00:33:21.93 praise God that is not the focus of 3ABN. 00:33:21.96\00:33:24.03 We don't use this ministry for financial gain, 00:33:24.07\00:33:27.27 we use it for the proliferation of the everlasting gospel 00:33:27.30\00:33:29.94 and everything you give is handled humbly. 00:33:29.97\00:33:32.41 You know, Greg and Jill, I understand our finance here, 00:33:32.44\00:33:34.68 I know Jason Bergman 00:33:34.71\00:33:36.04 and I know the motive behind those who work here. 00:33:36.08\00:33:38.08 We want to get the gospel of Christ out to the world. 00:33:38.11\00:33:40.42 We do not beg for money for personal gain. 00:33:40.45\00:33:43.12 Praise God for that. 00:33:43.15\00:33:44.49 But we have some takeaways and I need to get to that 00:33:44.52\00:33:47.19 before my time expires 00:33:47.22\00:33:49.12 but let me just point out a couple of things, 00:33:49.16\00:33:50.66 This is the generation motivated by financial gain. 00:33:50.69\00:33:53.93 2nd Timothy 3 verse 2, 00:33:53.96\00:33:55.70 "For men will be lovers of themselves 00:33:55.76\00:33:57.63 and lovers of money. " 00:33:57.67\00:33:59.53 That's the generation we live in and I hate to say this, 00:33:59.57\00:34:02.97 but even many people that open churches and open ministries 00:34:03.00\00:34:06.37 have the same motive... 00:34:06.41\00:34:07.74 they use Jesus Christ for financial gain... 00:34:07.78\00:34:09.64 the many mansions... the many houses... 00:34:09.68\00:34:11.98 the many jets... the many cars... 00:34:12.01\00:34:13.48 the many Rolls-Royces... 00:34:13.52\00:34:14.85 the lavish lifestyles... 00:34:14.88\00:34:16.22 but they claim to be connected to Christ. 00:34:16.25\00:34:18.35 What are the tragic lessons from Judas? 00:34:18.39\00:34:20.52 Let me bring those to the forefront 00:34:20.56\00:34:22.62 and I'll leave the rest for the latter part of the Program. 00:34:22.66\00:34:24.99 The tragedy of Judas is this: 00:34:25.03\00:34:27.20 having so much... he settled for so little. 00:34:27.23\00:34:30.43 The tragedy of Judas is this: 00:34:30.47\00:34:32.67 Being so close... his life ended so far. 00:34:32.70\00:34:36.07 The tragedy of Judas is this... 00:34:36.10\00:34:38.34 he pursued that which cost him everything 00:34:38.37\00:34:41.01 and ignored that which cost him nothing. 00:34:41.04\00:34:43.38 Panel: Hmmm... 00:34:43.45\00:34:44.78 Lomacang: The tragedy of Judas is those that betray others, 00:34:44.81\00:34:47.08 really betray themselves. 00:34:47.12\00:34:48.92 The tragedy of Judas is this: 00:34:48.95\00:34:50.69 he conspired to arrest the innocent One 00:34:50.75\00:34:53.76 but became incarcerated by his guilt. 00:34:53.79\00:34:56.79 The heart of Judas. 00:34:56.83\00:34:58.29 Don't use Jesus for your own personal gain. 00:34:58.33\00:35:02.13 Don't claim to be so close to the Messiah 00:35:02.16\00:35:05.93 and yet miss that which He offers. 00:35:05.97\00:35:08.07 Abandon the heart of Judas and embrace the heart of Jesus. 00:35:08.10\00:35:13.54 Panel: Amen. 00:35:13.58\00:35:14.91 Ryan: Thank you, guys, so much for that, I appreciate it, 00:35:14.94\00:35:16.71 Pastor. I mean, what you were just sharing... 00:35:16.75\00:35:18.15 just... what came into my mind 00:35:18.18\00:35:19.85 as we live in an era... 00:35:19.91\00:35:21.25 live in a time in which many are prostituting the gospel 00:35:21.28\00:35:24.59 and it's just a... it's a sad thing indeed. 00:35:24.62\00:35:27.92 I have Wednesday's Lesson entitled: 00:35:27.99\00:35:31.29 Ananias and Sapphira. 00:35:31.33\00:35:32.79 My name is Ryan Day 00:35:32.83\00:35:34.23 and it's a blessing to be able to share this truth, 00:35:34.26\00:35:37.40 you know, it's a story that we don't really focus on very often 00:35:37.43\00:35:41.44 we don't have many people that, you know, account 00:35:41.50\00:35:44.17 or give account to the story many times 00:35:44.21\00:35:46.44 because it doesn't have a very pleasant ending. 00:35:46.47\00:35:48.84 But there are certainly some lessons 00:35:48.91\00:35:50.58 that we can learn from this 00:35:50.61\00:35:51.95 and, you know, the lesson brings out 00:35:51.98\00:35:53.98 that it was an exacting time 00:35:54.02\00:35:55.38 that this particular time in history... 00:35:55.42\00:35:57.72 talking about the first century A.D. 00:35:57.75\00:35:59.99 right after Christ obviously had died, 00:36:00.02\00:36:02.16 the church was booming... it was growing greatly 00:36:02.22\00:36:05.13 especially from Pentecost and onward... 00:36:05.16\00:36:06.96 I mean, there were tons of people coming into the church 00:36:07.00\00:36:09.76 and their lives were being changed 00:36:09.80\00:36:11.13 by the gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:36:11.17\00:36:12.53 In fact, Acts chapter 4 verses 31 and 32 reminds us, 00:36:12.57\00:36:16.27 it says, "And when they had prayed, 00:36:16.30\00:36:18.11 the place was shaken where they were assembled together; 00:36:18.14\00:36:20.71 and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, 00:36:20.78\00:36:22.68 and they spake the word of God with boldness. 00:36:22.71\00:36:24.61 And the multitude of them that believed 00:36:24.65\00:36:26.51 were of one heart and of one soul: 00:36:26.55\00:36:28.35 neither said any of them that ought of these things 00:36:28.38\00:36:31.62 which he possessed was his own; 00:36:31.65\00:36:33.09 but they had all things in common. " 00:36:33.12\00:36:36.52 So, in this case, you know, 00:36:36.56\00:36:37.89 there was a... there was a sense of unity... 00:36:37.93\00:36:39.39 there was a sense of substantial growth... 00:36:39.43\00:36:41.40 the Spirit of the Lord was moving mightily 00:36:41.43\00:36:43.37 during this time 00:36:43.40\00:36:44.73 and, of course, it got the attention of a couple 00:36:44.77\00:36:47.00 by the name of Ananias and Sapphira 00:36:47.04\00:36:48.57 and the Lesson brings out that what a privilege 00:36:48.60\00:36:50.71 Ananias and Sapphira to people 00:36:50.74\00:36:52.67 and being part of this early church... 00:36:52.74\00:36:54.88 seeing it grow and seeing the manifestation of the Holy Spirit 00:36:54.91\00:36:57.91 in such a marked manner 00:36:57.95\00:36:59.58 and, of course, it brings out in Acts chapter 4 verses 34 and 35, 00:36:59.61\00:37:03.79 it says, "Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; 00:37:03.85\00:37:07.42 for who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, 00:37:07.46\00:37:10.36 and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, 00:37:10.39\00:37:13.29 and laid them in the apostles' feet... " 00:37:13.33\00:37:15.26 or "at the apostles' feet; 00:37:15.30\00:37:16.63 and they distributed to each as anyone had need. " 00:37:16.67\00:37:19.97 So, this was a great impression upon Ananias and Sapphira 00:37:20.00\00:37:23.17 as they were seeing 00:37:23.20\00:37:24.54 just the mighty works of God taking place. 00:37:24.57\00:37:26.31 And, of course, it was in this setting... 00:37:26.34\00:37:28.24 that Ananias and Sapphira 00:37:28.28\00:37:29.61 obviously impressed by what was happening 00:37:29.64\00:37:31.31 and wanted to be a part of it... 00:37:31.35\00:37:32.68 decided to sell some property 00:37:32.71\00:37:34.05 and contribute the proceeds to the church... 00:37:34.08\00:37:36.75 sounds good so far, right? 00:37:36.79\00:37:38.32 Well, let's read the story, 00:37:38.35\00:37:39.82 let's go to Acts chapter 5 and let's read verses 1 through 11, 00:37:39.85\00:37:42.69 because the Bible gives us some clear insight 00:37:42.72\00:37:45.59 on what actually happened. 00:37:45.63\00:37:46.96 Acts chapter 5 verse 1 through 11, it says, 00:37:47.00\00:37:51.17 "But a certain man named Ananias, 00:37:51.20\00:37:52.63 with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. 00:37:52.70\00:37:55.17 And he kept back part of the proceeds, 00:37:55.20\00:37:57.67 his wife also being aware of it, 00:37:57.71\00:37:59.54 and brought a certain part 00:37:59.57\00:38:01.34 and laid it at the apostles' feet. 00:38:01.38\00:38:03.04 But Peter said, 00:38:03.11\00:38:04.45 'Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart 00:38:04.48\00:38:07.25 to lie to the Holy Spirit 00:38:07.28\00:38:08.62 and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? 00:38:08.65\00:38:12.05 While it remained, was it not your own? 00:38:12.09\00:38:15.29 And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? 00:38:15.32\00:38:20.36 Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? 00:38:20.40\00:38:23.16 You have not lied to men but to God. 00:38:23.20\00:38:26.43 Then Ananias, hearing these words, 00:38:26.50\00:38:29.40 fell down and breathed his last. 00:38:29.47\00:38:32.34 So, of course, 00:38:32.37\00:38:34.31 great fear came over all those who heard these things, 00:38:34.34\00:38:37.05 and the young arose and wrapped him up, 00:38:37.11\00:38:39.81 carried him out and buried him. " 00:38:39.85\00:38:41.82 Verse 7, 00:38:41.85\00:38:43.42 it says, "Now it was about three hours later 00:38:43.45\00:38:45.99 when his wife came in, 00:38:46.02\00:38:47.46 not knowing what had happened. 00:38:47.52\00:38:49.69 And Peter answered her, 00:38:49.72\00:38:51.49 'Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?' 00:38:51.53\00:38:54.40 She said, 'Yes, for so much. ' 00:38:54.43\00:38:58.13 Then Peter said to her, 00:38:58.17\00:39:00.24 'How is it that you have agreed together 00:39:00.30\00:39:03.24 to test the Spirit of the Lord? 00:39:03.27\00:39:05.27 Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband 00:39:05.31\00:39:10.41 are at the door, 00:39:10.45\00:39:11.78 and they will carry you out. ' 00:39:11.81\00:39:13.92 Then immediately she fell down at his feet 00:39:13.95\00:39:16.92 and breathed her last. 00:39:16.95\00:39:18.29 And the young men came in and found her dead, 00:39:18.32\00:39:21.26 and carrying her out, buried her by her husband. 00:39:21.29\00:39:24.23 So great fear came upon all the church 00:39:24.29\00:39:27.63 and upon all those who heard these things. " 00:39:27.66\00:39:30.87 I mean, my goodness... 00:39:30.90\00:39:32.23 and just those words just ring out, 00:39:32.27\00:39:34.60 "You have not lied to men... 00:39:34.64\00:39:36.47 you're not... you're not pulling... 00:39:36.50\00:39:37.84 you may pull the wool over the men's eyes 00:39:37.87\00:39:40.08 but you have lied to God... 00:39:40.11\00:39:42.24 you can't get anything past God. " 00:39:42.28\00:39:43.88 God knows all... He sees all 00:39:43.91\00:39:46.35 and, of course, at first it seems as they were sincere, 00:39:46.38\00:39:49.15 of course, in their desire to give toward the work. 00:39:49.18\00:39:52.22 However, afterwards as... as Mrs. White brings out 00:39:52.25\00:39:55.22 in the Acts of the Apostles, page 72, 00:39:55.26\00:39:57.29 "Afterwards, Ananias and Sapphira grieved the Holy Spirit 00:39:57.33\00:40:00.00 by yielding to the feelings of covetousness. 00:40:00.03\00:40:02.36 They began to regret their promise 00:40:02.40\00:40:04.53 and soon lost the sweet influence 00:40:04.60\00:40:06.70 of the blessing that had warmed their hearts 00:40:06.74\00:40:09.20 with the desire to do large things 00:40:09.24\00:40:11.77 on behalf of the cause of Christ. " 00:40:11.81\00:40:14.91 Of course, you know, in other words, 00:40:14.94\00:40:16.95 though they had started out with the best of motives, 00:40:16.98\00:40:19.48 you know, they wanted to be a part of this great work, 00:40:19.51\00:40:22.72 their covetousness caused them to put on a front 00:40:22.75\00:40:25.69 and pretend to be what they really weren't. 00:40:25.72\00:40:29.02 This reminds me as we... 00:40:29.06\00:40:31.49 as we have heard this word many times, 00:40:31.53\00:40:33.29 "Covetousness... covetousness... " 00:40:33.33\00:40:35.06 this is all of the back to the heart... 00:40:35.10\00:40:37.27 the very heart of God's very commandments. 00:40:37.30\00:40:39.43 Exodus chapter 20 verse 17, 00:40:39.47\00:40:41.94 what does it say there in God's very law? 00:40:42.00\00:40:44.14 it says, "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; 00:40:44.21\00:40:45.94 you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, 00:40:45.97\00:40:47.64 nor his male servant, nor his female servant, 00:40:47.68\00:40:49.84 not his ox, nor his donkey, 00:40:49.88\00:40:51.21 nor anything that is your neighbors. " 00:40:51.25\00:40:53.35 In other words, 00:40:53.38\00:40:54.72 don't... don't put this before God... 00:40:54.75\00:40:56.18 don't put this before even your own salvation 00:40:56.22\00:40:58.89 to chase after those things which are not yours 00:40:58.92\00:41:01.56 or that God may not have plan 00:41:01.59\00:41:02.92 or will for you to have in your life. 00:41:02.96\00:41:04.83 If we dig a little deeper and we study a little deeper, 00:41:04.89\00:41:07.80 you'll eventually end up in Colossians chapter 3 00:41:07.83\00:41:10.20 where you're reading the first five verses 00:41:10.27\00:41:12.23 where it actually brings out the heart of the matter 00:41:12.27\00:41:14.34 because many people question and say, 00:41:14.37\00:41:16.24 "Well, if I see something and I want it, 00:41:16.27\00:41:18.07 is that a... is that a sin?" 00:41:18.11\00:41:19.44 Well, it goes a little deeper than just seeing something 00:41:19.47\00:41:21.64 and wanting something 00:41:21.71\00:41:23.04 or desiring something. 00:41:23.08\00:41:24.41 If you go to Colossians chapter 3 verses 1 through 5, 00:41:24.45\00:41:26.18 we get kind of a glimpse into what is at the heart of this 00:41:26.21\00:41:29.45 covetousness 00:41:29.48\00:41:30.82 or coveting... as it is a sin. 00:41:30.85\00:41:32.55 For Colossians 3 verses 1 through 5 says, 00:41:32.59\00:41:34.96 "If you were raised with Christ, 00:41:35.02\00:41:37.36 seek those things which are above, 00:41:37.39\00:41:39.69 which Christ is, 00:41:39.73\00:41:41.06 sitting at the right hand of God. 00:41:41.10\00:41:42.43 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 00:41:42.46\00:41:45.70 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. " 00:41:45.73\00:41:49.37 And Verse 4, 00:41:49.40\00:41:50.74 "When Christ who is our life appears, 00:41:50.77\00:41:53.24 then you also will appear with Him in glory. " 00:41:53.27\00:41:56.58 And then Verse 5, here it is, 00:41:56.61\00:41:58.31 "Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth" 00:41:58.35\00:42:01.52 what are those things we are to put to death? 00:42:01.58\00:42:04.05 "fornication, 00:42:04.09\00:42:05.55 uncleanness, 00:42:05.59\00:42:06.96 passion, 00:42:06.99\00:42:08.32 evil desire... " 00:42:08.36\00:42:09.69 and here it is... 00:42:09.72\00:42:11.06 "covetousness... " 00:42:11.09\00:42:12.43 but then it says, "which is idolatry. " 00:42:12.46\00:42:15.53 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:42:15.56\00:42:16.90 Ryan: Did you catch that? 00:42:16.93\00:42:18.27 What is at the heart of this covetousness? 00:42:18.30\00:42:20.14 What is at the heart of... of... of the sin of coveting? 00:42:20.20\00:42:22.97 It's idolatry. 00:42:23.00\00:42:24.77 It's putting others or anything above God 00:42:24.81\00:42:27.28 and not putting God first in your life. 00:42:27.34\00:42:29.74 Of course, Pastor Dinzey read Ephesians chapter 5 verse 5 00:42:29.78\00:42:33.11 which repeats this... 00:42:33.15\00:42:34.48 it says, "For this, you know, 00:42:34.52\00:42:35.85 that no fornicator, unclean person, 00:42:35.88\00:42:37.39 or covetous man... " 00:42:37.45\00:42:38.95 and then it says, "who is an idolator, 00:42:38.99\00:42:42.16 has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. " 00:42:42.22\00:42:45.86 You know, it doesn't take a rocket scientist... 00:42:45.89\00:42:47.96 all you have to do is be able to study and read a little bit, 00:42:48.03\00:42:50.47 go back and just survey the story of the Old Testament 00:42:50.50\00:42:53.74 and you will see that it was the sin of idolatry 00:42:53.77\00:42:57.11 that led to much calamity and much destruction 00:42:57.14\00:43:00.41 and... and the end of many. 00:43:00.48\00:43:02.04 For instance, it was idolatry 00:43:02.11\00:43:03.65 that led Lot's wife to turn into a pillar of salt. 00:43:03.68\00:43:06.58 She... she... she made her life in Sodom 00:43:06.61\00:43:10.02 and the things of her possessions 00:43:10.05\00:43:11.55 and everything that she had made there... 00:43:11.59\00:43:12.92 it was an idol to her... 00:43:12.95\00:43:14.29 she coveted that 00:43:14.32\00:43:15.66 and she couldn't let it go in her heart. 00:43:15.69\00:43:17.03 It was idolatry that led 3,000 people in the Camp of Israel 00:43:17.06\00:43:19.69 to be slain. 00:43:19.73\00:43:21.06 In Exodus chapter 32, they worshipped the golden calf, 00:43:21.10\00:43:23.37 Moses said, "Either you're going to worship the Lord 00:43:23.40\00:43:26.17 or you're not... 00:43:26.20\00:43:27.54 you're going to be on the Lord's side or you're not... 00:43:27.57\00:43:28.90 there were 3,000 of them that went against it 00:43:28.94\00:43:30.37 and they lost their life that day 00:43:30.41\00:43:31.77 because they'd rather have the calf than have God. 00:43:31.81\00:43:34.24 Idolatry led 24,000 Israelites 00:43:34.28\00:43:37.11 to be slain before entering the Promised Land. 00:43:37.15\00:43:39.48 The Moabites woman came in 00:43:39.51\00:43:41.58 turned their hearts to serving Baal... they made it an idol 00:43:41.62\00:43:44.85 and it cost them their life. 00:43:44.89\00:43:46.22 It was idolatry that led to Solomon's demise 00:43:46.25\00:43:49.89 and a permanent division of Israel. 00:43:49.92\00:43:52.13 It was idolatry that led to a three-and-a-half-year drought 00:43:52.16\00:43:55.33 in Israel during the days of Ahab. 00:43:55.36\00:43:57.10 It was idolatry that led to the scattering 00:43:57.17\00:43:59.47 of the Ten Tribes of the North 00:43:59.50\00:44:00.84 and the end of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. 00:44:00.87\00:44:02.84 It was idolatry that led Israel... 00:44:02.87\00:44:04.87 led to Israel evicting God from His own sanctuary. 00:44:04.91\00:44:09.84 And it was idolatry ultimately that led 00:44:09.88\00:44:11.91 to the complete destruction of Israel 00:44:11.95\00:44:14.78 to 70 years of Babylonian captivity... 00:44:14.82\00:44:17.62 that was the Mecca of idolatry 00:44:17.65\00:44:19.92 which, of course, is Babylon. 00:44:19.95\00:44:21.79 You know, you can read there in Jeremiah chapter 7, 00:44:21.82\00:44:24.59 I don't have time... I had it here in my notes 00:44:24.63\00:44:26.06 but you just go read Jeremiah chapter 7, 00:44:26.09\00:44:28.46 you can just see God's heart pouring out 00:44:28.53\00:44:30.33 as He has been pleading and pleading 00:44:30.37\00:44:32.10 and pleading with Israel for 840 years to trust in Him... 00:44:32.13\00:44:36.87 to put Him first above anything and anyone else 00:44:36.91\00:44:39.54 but yet, it leads to Him saying, 00:44:39.57\00:44:41.34 the most heart-wrenching words that you could ever hear 00:44:41.38\00:44:44.78 from your God... 00:44:44.81\00:44:46.15 to hear the prophet of God, Jeremiah... 00:44:46.18\00:44:47.62 to hear these words to come from God 00:44:47.65\00:44:49.42 and he says, "Therefore, Jeremiah, 00:44:49.45\00:44:50.95 do not pray for these people... 00:44:50.99\00:44:52.45 stop praying for them. 00:44:52.49\00:44:53.82 "Nor lift up a cry of prayer for them, 00:44:53.86\00:44:55.82 nor make intercession to Me for I will not hear you. " 00:44:55.86\00:44:58.59 They had reached a point where they had completely 00:44:58.63\00:45:01.30 turned their back on God. 00:45:01.33\00:45:02.70 They would rather have the world. 00:45:02.76\00:45:04.10 They would rather have the golden calf than to have God. 00:45:04.13\00:45:07.30 But Jesus says in Matthew 10 verse 37 to 39, 00:45:07.34\00:45:11.04 and He says, "He who loves father or mother more than Me 00:45:11.07\00:45:13.07 is not worthy of Me. 00:45:13.11\00:45:14.48 And he who loves son or daughter more than Me 00:45:14.54\00:45:16.85 is not worthy of Me. 00:45:16.88\00:45:18.21 And he who does not take his cross up and follow after Me 00:45:18.25\00:45:20.98 is not worthy of Me. " 00:45:21.02\00:45:22.75 Have you put Jesus first in your life? 00:45:22.78\00:45:24.82 Is there something that you are coveting? 00:45:24.85\00:45:26.79 Is there covetousness or idolatry in our heart? 00:45:26.82\00:45:29.12 It's... that's not the end, 00:45:29.19\00:45:30.93 just simply call out to the Lord and say, 00:45:30.96\00:45:32.36 "Lord, I don't want this to dominate my life anymore... " 00:45:32.39\00:45:34.86 and give your heart to Jesus today while you have time. 00:45:34.90\00:45:37.37 Panel: Amen... amen. 00:45:37.40\00:45:38.80 Shelley: Oooooh! 00:45:38.83\00:45:40.20 I'm telling you this is really a heavier lesson 00:45:40.24\00:45:44.54 and I had... I've got the good part... 00:45:44.57\00:45:47.54 my name is Shelley Quinn, I have Thursday... 00:45:47.58\00:45:50.85 I get to talk about: Overcoming Covetousness. 00:45:50.88\00:45:54.05 You know, when God has always 00:45:54.12\00:45:58.89 from the very beginning 00:45:58.92\00:46:01.42 had a moral code of love. 00:46:01.46\00:46:03.89 Through this moral code of love, 00:46:03.93\00:46:06.83 He sets boundaries around relationships... 00:46:06.86\00:46:11.17 our relationship with Him 00:46:11.20\00:46:13.10 and our relationship with others 00:46:13.13\00:46:15.20 and the moral code of love 00:46:15.24\00:46:18.54 is finally called in Exodus: 00:46:18.57\00:46:21.84 The Ten Commandments. 00:46:21.88\00:46:23.75 Let me repeat the 10th. 00:46:23.78\00:46:25.55 This is one that many of us think, 00:46:25.58\00:46:28.42 "Oh, okay, you're not supposed to have any idols before God... 00:46:28.48\00:46:33.25 you're not supposed to bow down to them. 00:46:33.29\00:46:35.39 You're not supposed to take His name in vain, 00:46:35.42\00:46:36.99 you're not supposed to do this that and the other... 00:46:37.03\00:46:39.53 don't... you know, 00:46:39.59\00:46:41.00 you got to honor your father and mother, 00:46:41.06\00:46:42.80 Don't commit adultery... 00:46:42.83\00:46:44.70 don't steal... 00:46:44.73\00:46:46.07 don't bear false testimony 00:46:46.10\00:46:47.54 and we... we go through these 00:46:47.57\00:46:49.30 and we get down... "Don't covet... " 00:46:49.34\00:46:51.27 like it's nothing. 00:46:51.31\00:46:52.87 To me... I think that covetousness 00:46:52.91\00:46:56.95 is what leads to greater sins. 00:46:56.98\00:47:00.95 Covetousness causes us to murder others. 00:47:00.98\00:47:05.35 Panel: That's true. 00:47:05.39\00:47:06.72 Shelley: Covetousness causes us to steal. 00:47:06.76\00:47:08.82 Covetousness causes adultery. 00:47:08.86\00:47:12.09 So, let me just take a second, go back through our definition 00:47:12.13\00:47:17.23 because my definition of covetousness 00:47:17.27\00:47:19.77 is a little bit different. 00:47:19.80\00:47:21.14 It is just the opposite of contentment. 00:47:21.17\00:47:25.44 It's greed... you want more... more... more. 00:47:25.47\00:47:29.14 More money... more power... more prestige... 00:47:29.21\00:47:32.81 whatever it is... it is idolatry. 00:47:32.88\00:47:35.78 You desire to possess something someone else has 00:47:35.82\00:47:39.39 an insatiable desire for wealth... 00:47:39.42\00:47:42.26 obsession to have more material things... 00:47:42.29\00:47:46.19 "I got to have a new book... " 00:47:46.23\00:47:47.76 "I got to have this... " 00:47:47.80\00:47:49.13 because when your heart covets something 00:47:49.16\00:47:52.87 with insatiable desire... 00:47:52.90\00:47:54.77 you begin to do things that are outside of God's will to get it. 00:47:54.80\00:47:58.97 It's a greediness 00:47:59.01\00:48:00.98 that basically denies faith in God 00:48:01.01\00:48:06.85 and scorns His values 00:48:06.88\00:48:09.55 and let me tell you something, 00:48:09.58\00:48:12.02 it is a self-inflicted wound. 00:48:12.05\00:48:14.82 Covetousness will ruin your life 00:48:14.86\00:48:17.56 but as Jill brought out... 00:48:17.59\00:48:18.93 it can also... no sin happens in a vacuum. 00:48:18.96\00:48:22.73 Covetousness can ruin your family's life. 00:48:22.76\00:48:26.60 The Study Guide said... I love this... 00:48:26.63\00:48:30.41 "It's a matter of the heart. " 00:48:30.44\00:48:32.57 It is deadly... it's deceiving. 00:48:32.61\00:48:34.78 It's like pride and selfishness... 00:48:34.81\00:48:36.91 it often goes unnoticed 00:48:36.95\00:48:38.95 and yet, this is a scary sin. 00:48:39.01\00:48:41.88 So, how do we recognize it? 00:48:41.92\00:48:44.75 Well, do you feel envious or jealous 00:48:44.79\00:48:48.32 when someone else is blessed? 00:48:48.36\00:48:50.36 And you say, "Well, why them and not me?" 00:48:50.39\00:48:54.16 Maybe you manipulate others to get what you want 00:48:54.20\00:48:59.60 because you think, "I deserve it. " 00:48:59.63\00:49:01.70 It's a general... if you have a general lack of contentment 00:49:01.74\00:49:07.71 that leads to bitterness, 00:49:07.74\00:49:09.24 that's covetousness. 00:49:09.31\00:49:10.65 A sense of underachievement... 00:49:10.68\00:49:13.65 competing for status with others is covetousness. 00:49:13.72\00:49:18.15 Spending money you don't have in those Black Friday sales... 00:49:18.19\00:49:22.56 that's covetousness. 00:49:22.59\00:49:23.99 Jesus warned in Luke 12:15, 00:49:24.03\00:49:28.16 "Take heed and beware of covetousness, 00:49:28.20\00:49:31.00 for one's life does not consist 00:49:31.03\00:49:33.67 of the abundance that he possesses. " 00:49:33.70\00:49:36.34 And then, I believe, we've already read 00:49:36.40\00:49:39.01 but I'll repeat, Ephesians 5:5-7, 00:49:39.04\00:49:43.21 "For this, you know, 00:49:43.24\00:49:44.58 no fornicator, 00:49:44.61\00:49:45.95 unclean person, 00:49:45.98\00:49:47.32 covetous man, 00:49:47.35\00:49:48.68 idolater... " 00:49:48.72\00:49:50.05 covetous man who is an idolator... 00:49:50.09\00:49:51.95 "has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. " 00:49:51.99\00:49:57.03 Covetousness can keep you out of the kingdom. 00:49:57.06\00:50:01.03 "Let no one deceive you with empty words... " 00:50:01.06\00:50:05.00 Paul goes on to say, 00:50:05.03\00:50:06.37 "For because of these things the wrath of God 00:50:06.40\00:50:09.87 comes upon the sons of disobedience. " 00:50:09.90\00:50:13.11 Covetousness is disobeying God. 00:50:13.17\00:50:16.85 "Therefore... " he says, 00:50:16.88\00:50:19.01 "Do not be partakers with them. " 00:50:19.08\00:50:20.72 How do we overcome? 00:50:20.75\00:50:22.08 Quickly, I want to give you seven steps 00:50:22.12\00:50:25.15 to overcome covetousness. 00:50:25.19\00:50:27.99 Number 1: 00:50:28.02\00:50:29.36 Recognize this is a projection 00:50:29.39\00:50:33.56 of Satan's spirit coming over you 00:50:33.60\00:50:37.73 just as Pastor Johnny Dinzey... 00:50:37.77\00:50:41.87 we saw Satan coveted God 00:50:41.90\00:50:46.54 the worship that God was receiving. 00:50:46.57\00:50:50.21 He coveted that position of control 00:50:50.25\00:50:53.82 and you know what? 00:50:53.85\00:50:55.22 He's going to do anything he can to divert your focus 00:50:55.25\00:50:58.79 and destroy your peace 00:50:58.85\00:51:00.99 and lead you to covet 00:51:01.02\00:51:03.12 so that he can lead you into greater sin. 00:51:03.16\00:51:05.03 So the second step is: Repent. 00:51:05.06\00:51:09.36 You know, ask God, "O Lord, show me my heart... 00:51:09.40\00:51:12.43 show me what's going on in my heart... " 00:51:12.47\00:51:15.97 and when He does... ask... ask Him for forgiveness, 00:51:16.00\00:51:20.68 1st John 1:9 says that if we confess our sins, 00:51:20.71\00:51:24.11 He's faithful and just to forgive us of all of our sin 00:51:24.15\00:51:27.18 and cleanse us of all unrighteousness 00:51:27.22\00:51:30.69 and pray for the gift of repentance. 00:51:30.72\00:51:33.39 Say, "Lord, grant me repentance. " 00:51:33.42\00:51:37.06 Step 3: Renew your focus on walking 00:51:37.13\00:51:40.50 in covenant relationship with the Lord. 00:51:40.53\00:51:43.83 You know what? If you're focused on the Lord 00:51:43.87\00:51:46.33 and His righteousness 00:51:46.37\00:51:48.54 in a relationship of love with Him, 00:51:48.57\00:51:51.57 you're going to be like Joshua... Joshua 24:15, 00:51:51.61\00:51:56.08 He says, "Hey, choose you this day whom you will serve... 00:51:56.11\00:51:59.98 as for me and my house... we're going to serve the Lord. " 00:52:00.02\00:52:03.82 And when you're focused on that, 00:52:03.85\00:52:06.62 you're not going to be focused on all of this temporal stuff. 00:52:06.65\00:52:10.96 Number 4: Reach out to God in daily prayer 00:52:10.99\00:52:16.93 asking Him to deliver you from evil. 00:52:16.97\00:52:21.10 God will never lead you into temptation. 00:52:21.14\00:52:25.21 As a matter of fact, 1st Corinthians 10:13 says, 00:52:25.27\00:52:28.21 "No temptation has overcome you except as common to man: 00:52:28.24\00:52:33.35 but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted 00:52:33.38\00:52:38.45 beyond what you are able, 00:52:38.49\00:52:40.69 but with the temptation, he'll make the way of escape, 00:52:40.72\00:52:44.53 that you may be able to bear it. " 00:52:44.56\00:52:46.63 You know, I really think a good dose in our prayer... 00:52:46.70\00:52:51.03 a good dose of thanksgiving and praise 00:52:51.07\00:52:54.10 will help you overcome covetousness. 00:52:54.14\00:52:57.11 I... I think 80 to 90 percent of my prayer 00:52:57.14\00:53:00.54 is thanksgiving and praise 00:53:00.58\00:53:03.58 and it cultivates in us 00:53:03.61\00:53:06.35 a spirit of contentment. 00:53:06.38\00:53:09.72 Number 5: Regularly... 00:53:09.75\00:53:13.02 I said, regularly study your Bible. 00:53:13.05\00:53:18.23 Psalm 119:11, he says, 00:53:18.26\00:53:21.66 "Your Word have I hidden in my heart, 00:53:21.70\00:53:24.07 that I might not sin against You. " 00:53:24.10\00:53:26.43 Sometimes, we're sitting in ignorance, 00:53:26.47\00:53:29.40 doesn't mean it's not sin 00:53:29.44\00:53:30.84 but we're ignorant of our sin because we don't know the Word 00:53:30.87\00:53:34.64 and really, we don't have much excuse 00:53:34.68\00:53:37.38 when the Word is so available to us. 00:53:37.41\00:53:40.08 1st John 2:15 says, 00:53:40.12\00:53:43.08 "Do not love the things of this world. " 00:53:43.12\00:53:46.45 So, as you study the Bible, 00:53:46.52\00:53:48.82 and you see that and you're going, 00:53:48.86\00:53:51.49 "Oh Lord, I am in love with things of this world. " 00:53:51.53\00:53:55.76 So, it helps to course-correct you. 00:53:55.80\00:53:59.23 And Number 6, 00:53:59.27\00:54:00.60 Remedy the spirit of covetousness 00:54:00.64\00:54:04.07 by returning tithes and offerings. 00:54:04.11\00:54:07.54 I'll tell you what! 00:54:07.58\00:54:08.94 When... when you do that, 00:54:08.98\00:54:10.98 it does help you get rid of covetousness. 00:54:11.01\00:54:14.85 Celebrate the good fortune of others. 00:54:14.88\00:54:18.65 I remember... oh, I guess I shouldn't say, 00:54:18.69\00:54:21.46 I remember someone I know who was very blessed by the Lord. 00:54:21.49\00:54:25.49 They told us the story... JD and I were just celebrating 00:54:25.53\00:54:29.46 and thinking, "Oh Lord, how wonderful!" 00:54:29.50\00:54:32.33 And then there were other people who were going, 00:54:32.37\00:54:35.04 "Well, why should they get that? 00:54:35.10\00:54:36.97 Just because... blah, blah, blah, blah, blah... " 00:54:37.01\00:54:39.24 And it's like, "What! 00:54:39.27\00:54:41.24 we need to celebrate other people 00:54:41.28\00:54:45.05 when they are blessed. " 00:54:45.08\00:54:47.68 And Number 7, 00:54:47.75\00:54:49.08 "Remember you are a child of God. 00:54:49.12\00:54:51.75 He wants to bless you. 00:54:51.79\00:54:53.76 He wants to give you an abundance of everything... " 00:54:53.79\00:54:57.46 but He does... he gives us abundantly 00:54:57.49\00:55:00.70 so that we will be equipped to... to... 00:55:00.73\00:55:03.87 for every good work. 00:55:03.90\00:55:05.23 Right? 00:55:05.27\00:55:06.60 And remember, it's His perfect timing. 00:55:06.63\00:55:08.50 He has an inheritance laid up for you in heaven. 00:55:08.57\00:55:12.77 We all have a desire for physical things. 00:55:12.81\00:55:16.78 It's not wrong 00:55:16.81\00:55:18.48 but it's a threat to us if we become fixated with it. 00:55:18.51\00:55:23.92 Colossians 4:14, real quickly... 00:55:23.95\00:55:26.92 Demas was one of Paul's closest companions 00:55:26.96\00:55:30.73 and a disciple of Christ 00:55:30.76\00:55:32.59 but in 2nd Timothy 4:10, 00:55:32.63\00:55:34.36 Paul says, "Demas... in love with this present world, 00:55:34.43\00:55:38.20 has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica.
