" 00:02:21.07\00:02:23.20 Panel: Amen. 00:02:23.24\00:02:24.57 Jill: We're looking at Lesson Number 7: 00:02:24.61\00:02:27.04 Unto the Least of These. 00:02:27.08\00:02:29.34 There's a... at least the Lesson brought out 00:02:29.38\00:02:31.15 there are at least four individuals 00:02:31.18\00:02:32.55 mentioned in Scripture 00:02:32.61\00:02:34.32 called the least of these. 00:02:34.35\00:02:36.02 Now, I'm going to read a couple of Bible verses 00:02:36.05\00:02:37.49 and let's see if we can find out who those individuals are. 00:02:37.52\00:02:40.06 First one is James 1:27, 00:02:40.09\00:02:42.02 "Pure and undefiled religion 00:02:42.06\00:02:43.93 before God and the Father is this, 00:02:43.96\00:02:45.39 to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, 00:02:45.43\00:02:48.10 and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. " 00:02:48.13\00:02:50.77 So, who are the least of these in that passage? 00:02:50.80\00:02:53.84 The orphans... ah ha... and the widows, yes, 00:02:53.87\00:02:56.37 the orphans and the widows, so those are two. 00:02:56.40\00:02:58.81 Let's read another verse, Deuteronomy 24 verse 17, 00:02:58.87\00:03:02.64 "You shall not pervert justice due to the stranger 00:03:02.68\00:03:06.41 or the fatherless, 00:03:06.45\00:03:08.18 nor take a widow's garment as a pledge. " 00:03:08.22\00:03:10.89 There are three mentioned in that passage 00:03:10.92\00:03:13.52 any guesses what they were? 00:03:13.56\00:03:15.12 Panel: Stranger. Jill: Stranger, yes, 00:03:15.16\00:03:17.43 stranger... fatherless... 00:03:17.46\00:03:18.93 now, fatherless and orphans are kind of used synonymously 00:03:18.99\00:03:21.63 and widows. 00:03:21.66\00:03:23.06 Now, we're going to look at Zachariah 7:9 and 10 00:03:23.10\00:03:25.77 and you see all four of them mentioned here. 00:03:25.80\00:03:28.44 "Thus says the LORD of hosts: 00:03:28.47\00:03:30.37 'Execute true justice, 00:03:30.41\00:03:32.64 show mercy and compassion everyone to his brother. 00:03:32.67\00:03:35.41 Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, 00:03:35.44\00:03:38.85 the alien or the poor. '" 00:03:38.88\00:03:41.15 Now, here its reference is alien 00:03:41.18\00:03:42.88 but it could also be stranger. 00:03:42.92\00:03:44.55 "Let none of you plan evil in his heart against his brother. " 00:03:44.59\00:03:49.56 Those four groups are mentioned... Old Testament 00:03:49.59\00:03:52.79 and New Testament. 00:03:52.83\00:03:54.46 The orphans or the fatherless. 00:03:54.50\00:03:56.60 Today, we would say, those would be kids who don't have parents. 00:03:56.63\00:03:59.83 Maybe their parents died through an accident 00:03:59.87\00:04:02.17 or an illness. 00:04:02.20\00:04:03.54 Or maybe their parents are in prison 00:04:03.57\00:04:06.17 for whatever reason... they don't have parents with them. 00:04:06.21\00:04:09.48 The widows... those who would be maybe single-parent homes 00:04:09.51\00:04:12.75 where a spouse has died 00:04:12.81\00:04:14.55 or a spouse through divorce is no longer in the picture. 00:04:14.58\00:04:17.62 We have the strangers or the aliens... 00:04:17.65\00:04:19.75 now, that's an interesting concept in Scripture. 00:04:19.79\00:04:22.52 The word in Hebrew of for stranger 00:04:22.56\00:04:25.56 often used to refer to those who left their homeland 00:04:25.59\00:04:30.00 perhaps because of famine or war. 00:04:30.03\00:04:32.60 In Genesis 15... it says Abraham's descendants 00:04:32.63\00:04:36.10 were to be strangers in Egypt 00:04:36.14\00:04:38.11 because they had left their homeland 00:04:38.17\00:04:40.08 and they were sojourning there. 00:04:40.11\00:04:41.84 In Exodus 2, Moses named his son, Gershom 00:04:41.88\00:04:45.35 which means... a stranger in a foreign land 00:04:45.41\00:04:48.25 because they were in that land of captivity. 00:04:48.28\00:04:51.05 In Exodus 12, the strangers to the nation of Israel 00:04:51.12\00:04:55.19 could partake of the heritage 00:04:55.22\00:04:57.43 and join the Israelites and become a native of the land. 00:04:57.46\00:05:02.10 And in Exodus 22, they were told not to oppress 00:05:02.13\00:05:06.17 the strangers in the land. 00:05:06.20\00:05:08.30 And then we have the fourth category of the least of these 00:05:08.34\00:05:12.64 which would be poor and we know Jesus said, what? 00:05:12.67\00:05:15.24 "The poor you will always have with you. " 00:05:15.31\00:05:19.21 Our memory text is Matthew 25 verse 34. 00:05:19.25\00:05:23.15 It says, "Then the king will say to those on His right hand, 00:05:23.18\00:05:25.85 'Come, you blessed of My Father, 00:05:25.89\00:05:27.89 inherit the kingdom prepared for you 00:05:27.92\00:05:29.59 from the foundation of the world. '" 00:05:29.62\00:05:31.23 And if you read the context, why do they inherit the kingdom? 00:05:31.29\00:05:34.40 One of the reasons... 00:05:34.43\00:05:35.76 they ministered to the least of these. 00:05:35.80\00:05:38.33 On Sunday's Lesson, we look at the life and ministry of Jesus 00:05:38.37\00:05:41.94 and we discover... remember the Jews thought what? 00:05:41.97\00:05:44.54 Jesus was coming to proclaim Himself King 00:05:44.57\00:05:47.84 and He would overthrow the Roman oppression 00:05:47.91\00:05:51.11 but yet, Jesus came to minister unto the least of these. 00:05:51.15\00:05:56.48 Let's read His mission statement, 00:05:56.52\00:05:58.32 that's actually my lesson on Sunday 00:05:58.35\00:05:59.99 is Jesus' mission statement. 00:06:00.02\00:06:01.36 We find it in Luke chapter 4, let's turn there. 00:06:01.39\00:06:03.86 We're going to read Luke chapter 4, 00:06:03.89\00:06:06.06 we pick it up in verse 16. 00:06:06.09\00:06:08.63 This is Jesus' Messianic ministry being announced 00:06:08.66\00:06:13.87 or you could say, His mission statement 00:06:13.94\00:06:15.87 for coming to this world. 00:06:15.90\00:06:17.31 He chose to announce His ministry of preaching... 00:06:17.34\00:06:20.21 of healing... of liberty here in Nazareth. 00:06:20.24\00:06:23.55 We're in Luke 4:16, 00:06:23.58\00:06:25.41 "So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. 00:06:25.45\00:06:27.78 And as His custom was, 00:06:27.82\00:06:29.15 He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, 00:06:29.18\00:06:31.09 and stood up to read. " 00:06:31.12\00:06:33.29 He was very well known by this time. 00:06:33.36\00:06:35.66 In fact, verse 14 says that He had returned from Galilee 00:06:35.69\00:06:40.86 and the news of Him 00:06:40.90\00:06:42.23 went out through all the surrounding regions. 00:06:42.26\00:06:45.33 So, Jesus was well known and the hometown Boy... 00:06:45.37\00:06:48.94 I say that with the most respect, 00:06:48.97\00:06:50.47 but that's what we would say, 00:06:50.51\00:06:51.84 He came home for a visit... He came to Nazareth 00:06:51.87\00:06:55.44 and the people had heard of his miracles 00:06:55.48\00:06:58.18 and they'd seen what He had done 00:06:58.21\00:07:01.02 and then, He comes into the synagogue 00:07:01.05\00:07:05.22 and what happens? Verse 17, 00:07:05.25\00:07:06.99 "He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. 00:07:07.02\00:07:09.62 And when He had opened the book, 00:07:09.66\00:07:11.06 He found the place where it was written... " 00:07:11.09\00:07:14.10 here we see... coming forward His mission statement. 00:07:14.13\00:07:17.47 Of course, He's quoting from Isaiah chapter 61 00:07:17.50\00:07:20.80 and verse 18, 00:07:20.84\00:07:22.30 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, 00:07:22.34\00:07:24.47 because He has anointed Me... " 00:07:24.51\00:07:27.28 Before we go any further 00:07:27.31\00:07:28.64 I just want to stop with that word "anointed Me. " 00:07:28.68\00:07:31.28 Remember Jesus at His baptism, what happened? 00:07:31.31\00:07:33.28 The Holy Spirit descended like a dove 00:07:33.31\00:07:36.92 in bodily form upon Him. 00:07:36.95\00:07:39.65 He was, you could say, anointed with the Spirit 00:07:39.69\00:07:42.62 for His mission. 00:07:42.66\00:07:43.99 Peter in Acts chapter 10 verse 38, 00:07:44.03\00:07:46.90 he is speaking to Cornelius and he says 00:07:46.93\00:07:49.70 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth 00:07:49.76\00:07:52.70 with the Holy Spirit and with power... 00:07:52.73\00:07:55.57 Anointing is essential for service. 00:07:55.60\00:07:59.21 We cannot work effectively for God 00:07:59.24\00:08:02.81 without the anointing of the Holy Spirit... 00:08:02.84\00:08:05.85 without the infilling of the Holy Spirit. 00:08:05.91\00:08:08.88 Now, of course, we know 00:08:08.92\00:08:10.42 Jesus was filled with the Spirit from His birth in a special way 00:08:10.49\00:08:14.16 because the Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary 00:08:14.19\00:08:17.23 with the conception of Jesus and we know that 00:08:17.26\00:08:20.26 but in another fuller measure, 00:08:20.30\00:08:22.26 the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus at His baptism. 00:08:22.30\00:08:25.67 So, Jesus is saying, "He has anointed me. " 00:08:25.70\00:08:28.07 He's speaking of Himself 00:08:28.10\00:08:29.44 even though it's quoting the words back here from Isaiah 00:08:29.47\00:08:31.34 but He's speaking of Himself. 00:08:31.37\00:08:32.71 The Holy Spirit anointed Him for His mission 00:08:32.74\00:08:34.64 and what was that mission? 00:08:34.68\00:08:36.14 We're going to talk about the six-fold mission 00:08:36.18\00:08:39.31 of the Messiah 00:08:39.38\00:08:40.72 and for each one of those points we have a takeaway, 00:08:40.75\00:08:43.22 so, let's jump into the six-fold mission. 00:08:43.25\00:08:45.12 What was His mission? 00:08:45.15\00:08:46.49 Number 1: To preach the gospel to the poor. 00:08:46.52\00:08:49.79 In Greek, the word "poor" means one who crouches 00:08:49.82\00:08:53.50 and cowers... 00:08:53.53\00:08:55.00 one who is deeply destitute. 00:08:55.03\00:08:58.70 Takeaway Number 1: 00:08:58.73\00:09:00.17 The Gospel is for those who need it most. 00:09:00.20\00:09:03.07 The gospel is for the least of these. 00:09:03.10\00:09:05.94 The gospel is for the orphans... 00:09:05.97\00:09:07.68 for the widows... 00:09:07.71\00:09:09.18 for the strangers... 00:09:09.21\00:09:10.58 for the fatherless... the gospel is for the poor. 00:09:10.65\00:09:14.48 Jesus came for those who are deeply destitute. 00:09:14.55\00:09:18.25 He came for me... 00:09:18.29\00:09:19.65 He came for you. 00:09:19.69\00:09:21.02 Let's look at the second part of His mission. 00:09:21.06\00:09:24.16 Not only did He come to preach the gospel to the poor, 00:09:24.23\00:09:26.63 He came to heal the brokenhearted. 00:09:26.66\00:09:30.10 Now, that word in Greek means to break in pieces... 00:09:30.13\00:09:34.14 to crush... 00:09:34.17\00:09:35.60 literally or figuratively to scatter those pieces. 00:09:35.64\00:09:41.41 The gospel... Takeaway Number 2: The gospel is for the broken. 00:09:41.44\00:09:45.65 Jesus came for the broken. 00:09:45.68\00:09:48.88 Those who are broken emotionally... 00:09:48.92\00:09:51.32 those who are broken spiritually... 00:09:51.35\00:09:53.66 He came... remember He cast out the money changers in the temple 00:09:53.69\00:09:57.69 remember that story... 00:09:57.76\00:09:59.09 and all those people who thought that they were something 00:09:59.13\00:10:02.46 and thought that they were worth... worthy... they left, 00:10:02.50\00:10:05.93 but it was the poor who stayed. 00:10:06.00\00:10:07.70 It was the needy who stayed. 00:10:07.74\00:10:09.37 It was the destitute who stayed. 00:10:09.40\00:10:12.01 Those were the ones. 00:10:12.07\00:10:13.64 Of course, He came for all 00:10:13.68\00:10:15.01 but those were the ones who received Him. 00:10:15.04\00:10:17.15 Part 3 of His six-fold mission: 00:10:17.18\00:10:21.28 To proclaim liberty to the captives. 00:10:21.32\00:10:24.65 Now, this word is fascinating to me... 00:10:24.69\00:10:27.92 that word "liberty" in Greek means deliverance or forgiveness 00:10:27.96\00:10:31.56 and almost every time, 00:10:31.59\00:10:33.09 if you look, almost every time, 00:10:33.16\00:10:34.63 it is translated in the New Testament 00:10:34.66\00:10:36.83 is translated: forgiveness. 00:10:36.87\00:10:38.57 Now, if you understand that in context, 00:10:38.60\00:10:41.34 to proclaim liberty to the captives... 00:10:41.40\00:10:43.91 what does that mean? 00:10:43.94\00:10:45.27 You and I are bound... stuck in addiction and sin 00:10:45.31\00:10:49.14 and Jesus came to give us forgiveness. 00:10:49.18\00:10:52.15 Jesus came to set us free. 00:10:52.18\00:10:55.28 The captive... it's amazing to me 00:10:55.32\00:10:58.59 the word means: a prisoner of war... 00:10:58.62\00:11:01.89 to buy back. 00:11:01.92\00:11:03.36 You know, you think about how He redeemed us 00:11:03.39\00:11:06.09 and bought us back. 00:11:06.13\00:11:07.46 Takeaway Number 3: 00:11:07.50\00:11:08.83 The gospel... it's for the sinful. 00:11:08.86\00:11:11.57 Jesus came to offer forgiveness. 00:11:11.60\00:11:14.47 We know all have sinned 00:11:14.50\00:11:15.84 and fallen short of the glory of God. 00:11:15.87\00:11:18.27 Let's look at the fourth part of His mission: 00:11:18.31\00:11:22.58 To grant recovery of sight to the blind. 00:11:22.64\00:11:26.55 Now, that blind sometimes is translated in Greek... 00:11:26.61\00:11:29.52 physical blindness... 00:11:29.55\00:11:30.89 sometimes it's translated "spiritual blindness" 00:11:30.92\00:11:34.12 like when Jesus talked about the Pharisees and Sadducees 00:11:34.16\00:11:37.26 being blind or blind guides. 00:11:37.29\00:11:39.66 So either way, the gospel is for those who cannot see. 00:11:39.69\00:11:44.57 Jesus came to heal us of our spiritual blindness. 00:11:44.60\00:11:49.27 He didn't come to just take away our sin 00:11:49.30\00:11:50.87 and to forgive our sin and to cleanse us from that. 00:11:50.91\00:11:53.68 He came to open our eyes so that we could see... 00:11:53.71\00:11:56.44 so that we could know... 00:11:56.48\00:11:57.81 so that we could understand and comprehend truth. 00:11:57.85\00:12:00.88 You know, without Jesus, 00:12:00.92\00:12:03.22 we can't understand the Word of God. 00:12:03.28\00:12:05.35 Without the infilling of the Holy Spirit... 00:12:05.42\00:12:08.06 spiritual things are spiritually discerned 00:12:08.09\00:12:10.63 and it takes that to understand that... 00:12:10.66\00:12:13.16 to open our eyes spiritually. 00:12:13.19\00:12:15.60 Let's look at the fifth aspect. 00:12:15.66\00:12:18.00 To set at liberty those who are oppressed. 00:12:18.03\00:12:21.20 Now, I told you Jesus was quoting from Isaiah 61 00:12:21.24\00:12:24.07 in the previous Section is 00:12:24.11\00:12:25.44 but this Section is from Isaiah chapter 58, 00:12:25.47\00:12:28.14 "To set at liberty those who are oppressed. " 00:12:28.21\00:12:31.25 The word "liberty" is the same word used before 00:12:31.28\00:12:34.28 it means forgiveness 00:12:34.32\00:12:36.55 or that liberty or setting free. 00:12:36.58\00:12:39.09 So, to set at liberty... those who are oppressed. 00:12:39.15\00:12:41.39 Oppressed is translated to crush, bruise, oppressed... 00:12:41.42\00:12:46.39 in Isaiah 42 verse 4, it is translated "discouraged. " 00:12:46.46\00:12:50.47 So, you know what my takeaway is from this Number 5, 00:12:50.50\00:12:54.50 the gospel is for the bruised. 00:12:54.54\00:12:56.50 The gospel is for the crushed. 00:12:56.54\00:12:58.47 The gospel is for the discouraged. 00:12:58.51\00:13:01.68 If you say, "I don't even know a way out, 00:13:01.71\00:13:04.58 I don't even know what to do. " 00:13:04.61\00:13:06.92 Jesus came to set you free. 00:13:06.95\00:13:09.15 Finally, the last part, Number 6, 00:13:09.18\00:13:11.65 He came to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. 00:13:11.69\00:13:15.39 This is an illusion to the Year of Jubilee 00:13:15.42\00:13:17.79 which would be the 50th year. 00:13:17.83\00:13:19.19 The year of universal release for persons and property. 00:13:19.23\00:13:23.16 The year when the slaves were set free 00:13:23.20\00:13:25.30 and the debts were forgiven 00:13:25.33\00:13:26.67 and the land returned to its original owner. 00:13:26.70\00:13:29.34 Jesus was saying... what's the final takeaway? 00:13:29.37\00:13:31.97 The gospel is now. 00:13:32.04\00:13:33.38 He's saying that My time is now... 00:13:33.41\00:13:36.21 I am here now as your Messiah. 00:13:36.24\00:13:39.08 God's grace is for now. 00:13:39.11\00:13:41.02 God's forgiveness is for now. 00:13:41.05\00:13:43.28 His deliverance from sin is for now 00:13:43.32\00:13:46.62 so, what an incredible gift. 00:13:46.65\00:13:48.52 He did not come to break the oppressor's yoke... 00:13:48.56\00:13:51.59 yoke as in from Rome, 00:13:51.63\00:13:53.29 but He came to deliver us all and to set us free. 00:13:53.36\00:13:57.37 Ryan: Amen, wow! 00:13:57.40\00:13:59.10 Thank you so much, Jill, for that... I appreciate it. 00:13:59.13\00:14:00.97 Powerful truth 00:14:01.00\00:14:02.37 and this Lesson continues on with Monday's Lesson 00:14:02.40\00:14:06.24 entitled: God's Provision for the Poor. 00:14:06.27\00:14:08.61 There is so many rich counsels that we find in the Word of God 00:14:08.64\00:14:11.18 that helps us to come to understand 00:14:11.21\00:14:13.28 God's heart on these issues 00:14:13.31\00:14:14.88 and, you know, God's heart on these issues 00:14:14.92\00:14:16.95 and how He sees it... how He views it 00:14:16.99\00:14:18.75 should also be ours if we are in relationship with Him 00:14:18.79\00:14:22.29 and we're growing in Him 00:14:22.32\00:14:23.66 and we are coming in full harmony with His plan 00:14:23.69\00:14:26.39 and His will for our life. 00:14:26.43\00:14:27.76 We also should be sharing in the heart of the Lord 00:14:27.80\00:14:30.57 especially in our relationship 00:14:30.60\00:14:32.27 and in our actions and our thoughts towards others. 00:14:32.30\00:14:35.20 God's Provision for the Poor. 00:14:35.24\00:14:37.51 As I was studying this Lesson, 00:14:37.54\00:14:39.74 it brought me back to some of my own experiences. 00:14:39.77\00:14:43.35 You know, there are different levels of poverty 00:14:43.38\00:14:46.41 or different levels of poor, 00:14:46.45\00:14:47.85 and, you know, there are those in the extreme cases 00:14:47.88\00:14:50.99 are literally homeless 00:14:51.02\00:14:52.59 and, you know, you can see these very extreme situations 00:14:52.62\00:14:56.19 if you just go to some of the big cities 00:14:56.22\00:14:57.86 in... in the world... 00:14:57.89\00:14:59.23 some of the big cities even here in the United States. 00:14:59.26\00:15:01.13 But then there is... maybe... not so extreme 00:15:01.16\00:15:04.90 but yet still levels of poverty that exists out there 00:15:04.93\00:15:07.54 for instance, there are people that are not necessarily 00:15:07.57\00:15:10.14 homeless but yet they have hit some misfortunes 00:15:10.17\00:15:12.67 or for whatever reason they are in a situation 00:15:12.71\00:15:15.18 in which they're living in an extreme poverty level 00:15:15.21\00:15:17.91 or in a level of poverty that is... 00:15:17.95\00:15:20.42 is in the lower level of things. 00:15:20.45\00:15:22.85 I guess I could just say it like that. 00:15:22.88\00:15:24.29 It brought me back to a little bit of time in my life 00:15:24.35\00:15:27.76 when I and my family experienced some levels of poverty 00:15:27.79\00:15:31.19 and, you know, there was a time... 00:15:31.23\00:15:34.40 you know, my parents... 00:15:34.43\00:15:35.76 while growing up my parents were extremely... 00:15:35.80\00:15:37.73 extremely hard workers 00:15:37.77\00:15:39.10 and they instilled that within me and my brother and my sister. 00:15:39.13\00:15:41.90 They taught us what it meant to work hard. 00:15:41.94\00:15:44.11 They... they taught us to work hard... 00:15:44.14\00:15:46.24 they taught us to be honest, 00:15:46.27\00:15:47.74 to give our all... 00:15:47.78\00:15:49.11 to do everything not in a half-hearted way. 00:15:49.14\00:15:51.45 Not to do things, you know, 00:15:51.48\00:15:53.25 to start something and not finish it, 00:15:53.28\00:15:55.35 but to finish it... to do it the right way 00:15:55.38\00:15:57.72 and do it the best way... the most efficient way, 00:15:57.75\00:15:59.92 and so, I watched as both of my parents just labored very hard, 00:15:59.95\00:16:03.96 they were very hard workers all their lives, 00:16:03.99\00:16:05.53 well, this ultimately led to a time in which both of my parents 00:16:05.56\00:16:08.96 were declared "disabled" 00:16:09.00\00:16:10.47 because my dad had had a string of... of surgeries, 00:16:10.50\00:16:12.97 my mom had had a string of surgeries 00:16:13.00\00:16:14.47 and this was in my... you know, latter years of High School 00:16:14.50\00:16:17.27 and... and, you know, my dad and my mom usually worked 00:16:17.31\00:16:20.68 and I worked as I got a little older 00:16:20.71\00:16:22.24 but there came a time when I was the only one working 00:16:22.28\00:16:24.18 in the house and also going to school 00:16:24.21\00:16:26.31 and so, you know, making less... 00:16:26.35\00:16:28.82 less than ten to 15 thousand dollars a year 00:16:28.85\00:16:31.09 which is, you know, again, extreme poverty level 00:16:31.12\00:16:33.36 in terms of what Americans make in regards to an income. 00:16:33.39\00:16:36.42 But, you know, I say all of that because there were times 00:16:36.46\00:16:39.43 when I remember, you know, 00:16:39.46\00:16:40.80 we didn't know where the money was going to come from 00:16:40.83\00:16:42.90 come from to keep the lights on 00:16:42.96\00:16:44.73 but didn't know where the money was going to come, you know, 00:16:44.77\00:16:47.24 for the... sometimes for the next day's meal 00:16:47.27\00:16:49.30 even though God... we knew God would provide 00:16:49.34\00:16:51.37 but there was times when we're like, 00:16:51.41\00:16:52.74 you know, what are we going to eat tomorrow? 00:16:52.77\00:16:54.11 we don't... we don't have enough money but... 00:16:54.14\00:16:56.08 but you know it's amazing God always came through 00:16:56.11\00:16:58.45 but we still lived in a situation where it was like 00:16:58.48\00:17:00.82 where... where are these things going to come 00:17:00.85\00:17:02.25 because we were in a situation where I was the only one working 00:17:02.28\00:17:04.79 and my money... my salary was not enough to provide. 00:17:04.85\00:17:07.22 There were times when we were wondering, you know, 00:17:07.26\00:17:09.62 when... when... how are we going to put gas in the vehicle 00:17:09.66\00:17:12.43 to get to here... to get to there... 00:17:12.46\00:17:13.80 or get to school or wherever it was we were going, 00:17:13.83\00:17:15.46 and, of course, some misfortunes and some misunderstandings 00:17:15.50\00:17:18.80 led to a point in time in which 00:17:18.83\00:17:20.17 there was a cop showing up at our door... serving papers 00:17:20.20\00:17:22.87 and threatening to take away our home 00:17:22.90\00:17:24.47 and threatening to take away our vehicles 00:17:24.51\00:17:25.91 and every time we would hear a knock at the door, 00:17:25.97\00:17:28.01 you know, my heart would sink 00:17:28.04\00:17:29.38 because I'd think, "Oh no, 00:17:29.41\00:17:30.75 is it that cop again coming to threaten to take away 00:17:30.78\00:17:32.18 our belongings... " 00:17:32.21\00:17:33.58 you know, but if it wasn't for friends and family 00:17:33.62\00:17:36.85 and others that God had placed in our life 00:17:36.89\00:17:39.15 to help us through this time of... of trouble... 00:17:39.19\00:17:41.49 this time of trial for us and difficulty, 00:17:41.52\00:17:43.63 you know, praise God that there are people out there 00:17:43.66\00:17:46.09 that understand God's heart on this issue. 00:17:46.13\00:17:48.10 I just want to read through a few texts in Scripture 00:17:48.13\00:17:50.27 and... and just share with you 00:17:50.30\00:17:52.23 what the Bible teaches on this subject 00:17:52.27\00:17:53.87 because God has commanded us, 00:17:53.94\00:17:55.87 He has... He has counseled us and told us 00:17:55.90\00:17:58.41 how we should make provisions for the poor 00:17:58.44\00:18:00.88 and how we should relate 00:18:00.94\00:18:02.28 and treat those who are less fortunate than we are. 00:18:02.31\00:18:04.28 Exodus chapter 23 verses 10 and 11, 00:18:04.31\00:18:06.75 the Bible says this, 00:18:06.78\00:18:08.12 it says, again, this is Exodus 23 verses 10 and 11, 00:18:08.15\00:18:10.92 it says, "Six years you shall sow your land 00:18:10.95\00:18:13.15 and gather in its produce, 00:18:13.19\00:18:15.12 but the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow, 00:18:15.16\00:18:18.63 that the poor of your people shall eat; 00:18:18.66\00:18:21.00 and what they leave, the beasts of the field may eat. 00:18:21.06\00:18:24.00 In like manner, you shall do with your vineyard 00:18:24.03\00:18:26.60 and your olive grove. " 00:18:26.63\00:18:28.37 So, here God is saying, "Look, 00:18:28.40\00:18:29.74 you know, it's not all for you, 00:18:29.77\00:18:31.11 it's not all for just your business 00:18:31.14\00:18:32.47 and for your personal gain, 00:18:32.51\00:18:33.84 leave a little bit for someone else 00:18:33.88\00:18:35.21 who might be less fortunate than you. " 00:18:35.24\00:18:36.58 Leviticus chapter 23 verses 22... 00:18:36.61\00:18:39.71 again Leviticus 23 verse 22, 00:18:39.75\00:18:41.42 it says, "When you reap the harvest of your land, 00:18:41.45\00:18:44.02 you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field 00:18:44.05\00:18:46.39 when you reap, 00:18:46.45\00:18:47.79 nor shall you gather any gleaning from your harvest. 00:18:47.82\00:18:50.03 You shall leave them for the poor and for the stranger: 00:18:50.06\00:18:52.83 I am the LORD your God. " 00:18:52.86\00:18:54.46 So, again, God telling His people, 00:18:54.50\00:18:55.93 "You're My people, 00:18:55.96\00:18:57.30 you're My beacons of light to this world, 00:18:57.33\00:18:58.87 I want you to be those people 00:18:58.90\00:19:01.00 who are compassionate for your brothers and sisters 00:19:01.04\00:19:03.07 who are poor... who are less fortunate than you, 00:19:03.10\00:19:05.14 when you go out and gather that harvest, 00:19:05.17\00:19:06.81 don't gather it all, leave the corners there 00:19:06.84\00:19:08.44 so the people can come around 00:19:08.48\00:19:09.84 and they can gather some food for them and their families 00:19:09.88\00:19:12.08 and their home. " 00:19:12.11\00:19:13.45 Deuteronomy chapter 15 verse 11, 00:19:13.48\00:19:15.32 it says, "For the poor will never cease from the land; 00:19:15.35\00:19:17.85 therefore I command you, saying, 00:19:17.89\00:19:19.45 'You shall open your hand wide to your brother, 00:19:19.49\00:19:22.52 you shall open your hand wide to your brother, 00:19:22.56\00:19:25.63 to your poor and your needy, in your land. '" 00:19:25.66\00:19:28.66 These are just some general principles 00:19:28.70\00:19:30.60 that God instilled within His people 00:19:30.63\00:19:32.43 and commanded and counseled His people to do. 00:19:32.47\00:19:34.20 Also, we have a responsibility not just for the physical needs 00:19:34.24\00:19:37.87 but just the needs in general... 00:19:37.91\00:19:39.67 to be there... to represent and to stand up for those in need. 00:19:39.71\00:19:43.11 Psalm chapter 82 verses 3 and 4, 00:19:43.14\00:19:46.38 makes it very clear, 00:19:46.41\00:19:47.75 it says "Defend the poor and the fatherless; 00:19:47.78\00:19:50.95 do justice to the afflicted and needy. 00:19:50.99\00:19:53.15 Deliver the poor and needy; 00:19:53.19\00:19:55.46 free them from the hand of the wicked. " 00:19:55.49\00:19:57.96 You know what? We are to treat others 00:19:57.99\00:20:00.03 the way we would want to be treated 00:20:00.06\00:20:01.96 and I can tell you being on again... 00:20:02.00\00:20:03.87 I'm not going to go as far as to say that we were homeless 00:20:03.90\00:20:06.10 and that we were in extreme, extreme, extremes 00:20:06.13\00:20:08.00 but I've been in the situation and I have a heart for people 00:20:08.04\00:20:10.91 who... who... because I've been there 00:20:10.94\00:20:12.84 and I know what it's like 00:20:12.87\00:20:14.21 and the Lesson just goes on and brings that 00:20:14.24\00:20:16.08 it says, "Then there are promises 00:20:16.14\00:20:17.48 to those who help the needy. " 00:20:17.51\00:20:18.85 and it gives... Proverbs 28 verse 27 where it says, 00:20:18.88\00:20:21.48 "He who gives to the poor will not lack. " 00:20:21.52\00:20:23.65 That's a beautiful promise. 00:20:23.69\00:20:25.02 Proverbs 29 verse 14, 00:20:25.05\00:20:26.99 I know these are rapid-fire Scriptures 00:20:27.02\00:20:29.52 but just go with me on this, 00:20:29.56\00:20:30.99 Proverbs chapter 29 verse 14, 00:20:31.03\00:20:32.43 "The king who judges the poor with truth, 00:20:32.49\00:20:34.96 his throne will be established forever. " 00:20:35.00\00:20:37.27 And, of course, the blessing also brings out 00:20:37.30\00:20:39.33 and King David noted in Psalm chapter 41 verse 1, 00:20:39.37\00:20:42.27 "Blessed is he who considers the poor; 00:20:42.30\00:20:44.67 the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. " 00:20:44.71\00:20:47.68 So, these are promises that are given to us 00:20:47.71\00:20:49.84 if we will share in the heart of God on these issues. 00:20:49.88\00:20:52.61 It goes on to say, "This, then, always had been a priority 00:20:52.65\00:20:56.42 in ancient Israel even if, at times, 00:20:56.45\00:20:58.12 it had been lost sight of. " 00:20:58.15\00:21:00.36 In contrast though, get this, 00:21:00.39\00:21:02.69 and this... this really hit home. 00:21:02.72\00:21:05.63 "In contrast, even in modern times, 00:21:05.69\00:21:08.56 particularly in England, Western Europe, 00:21:08.60\00:21:11.17 under the impact of what was known as 'Social Darwinism,' 00:21:11.23\00:21:15.20 many thought that not only was there no moral imperative 00:21:15.24\00:21:19.21 to help the poor 00:21:19.24\00:21:20.58 but that it was, in fact, wrong to do so. " 00:21:20.61\00:21:23.28 When I read this, my mind immediately went to... 00:21:23.31\00:21:25.41 you know, I've met a lot of Christians with this mindset... 00:21:25.45\00:21:27.52 professed Christians, I'll say that. 00:21:27.55\00:21:29.08 I met a lot of people in this culture, especially in our time, 00:21:29.12\00:21:31.85 we have this mentality... 00:21:31.89\00:21:33.22 well, they need to help themselves 00:21:33.25\00:21:34.62 and so, we don't need to help these individuals 00:21:34.66\00:21:36.76 because they have a problem, 00:21:36.79\00:21:38.13 they're just lazy. 00:21:38.16\00:21:39.49 No... are there... 00:21:39.53\00:21:40.86 is it truthful that there are some lazy people out there 00:21:40.90\00:21:42.23 that need to get up and do something for themselves, 00:21:42.26\00:21:43.83 and to provide for themselves and their family? 00:21:43.87\00:21:45.43 Absolutely. 00:21:45.47\00:21:46.80 That's why I'm not saying that, you know, 00:21:46.84\00:21:48.17 everyone falls under this category, 00:21:48.20\00:21:49.54 but at the same time, there are people in need out there 00:21:49.57\00:21:51.44 that have experienced misfortunes 00:21:51.47\00:21:52.94 that we cannot throw under the bus and put into the category 00:21:52.97\00:21:55.91 that... well, they just need to help themselves, 00:21:55.94\00:21:57.65 it's... it's wrong for me to help this person 00:21:57.71\00:21:59.38 because I am enabling them. 00:21:59.41\00:22:00.75 Well, that's not always the case. 00:22:00.78\00:22:02.12 I remember there was a time 00:22:02.15\00:22:03.49 when me and my family were on EBT Food Stamps 00:22:03.52\00:22:05.85 and that was a difficult thing because in my culture... 00:22:05.92\00:22:09.76 especially in the South, you'd hear people say, 00:22:09.79\00:22:11.36 "Well, you know, those people on EBT... 00:22:11.39\00:22:13.70 I'm just paying for their groceries and I'm just... " 00:22:13.76\00:22:15.96 and they have all these ideas where it's... it's... 00:22:16.00\00:22:18.20 it's a harsh mentality of 00:22:18.23\00:22:19.90 "I'm the one paying to support this family 00:22:19.93\00:22:22.17 and my tax dollars are going to help these people 00:22:22.20\00:22:24.47 they should go out and get a job and do for themselves. " 00:22:24.51\00:22:26.47 Well, you know what? 00:22:26.54\00:22:27.88 I could tell you with absolute certainty 00:22:27.91\00:22:29.24 that we were a hardworking family... 00:22:29.28\00:22:30.61 we went through some misfortunes 00:22:30.65\00:22:31.98 and praise God for them EBT Food Stamps 00:22:32.01\00:22:33.62 during the time that they were provided to us and given to us, 00:22:33.65\00:22:36.95 that it was very much of a help. 00:22:36.99\00:22:38.59 Now, praise God... God also brought us out of that 00:22:38.62\00:22:41.02 because the happy ending of the story is, 00:22:41.06\00:22:42.62 there came a time 00:22:42.66\00:22:43.99 in which my father was able to gain a little bit better health, 00:22:44.03\00:22:45.86 my mother was able to gain a little bit better health, 00:22:45.89\00:22:48.53 I was able to become of age where I could get a better job 00:22:48.56\00:22:51.13 and we let go of those food stamps 00:22:51.17\00:22:52.67 because we no longer needed them 00:22:52.70\00:22:54.40 and God brought us out of that 00:22:54.44\00:22:56.04 through blessings down the road. 00:22:56.07\00:22:57.61 But my Friends, we have to understand 00:22:57.64\00:22:59.27 that the Bible does not have... 00:22:59.31\00:23:00.94 does not place upon us this mentality 00:23:00.98\00:23:02.94 always for those who are in the poor 00:23:02.98\00:23:04.88 that everyone should just help themselves 00:23:04.91\00:23:07.08 and figure out their own problems, 00:23:07.12\00:23:08.78 God has placed us there to be a blessing to others 00:23:08.82\00:23:11.45 and to give and share the heart of the Lord 00:23:11.49\00:23:13.49 in being there for them when they are needed. 00:23:13.52\00:23:15.49 "Instead," it says, 00:23:15.52\00:23:16.86 "following the forces of nature, 00:23:16.89\00:23:18.23 in which the strong survive at the expense of the weak, 00:23:18.26\00:23:21.46 'Social Darwinists' believed that it would be detrimental 00:23:21.50\00:23:24.97 to society to help the poor, 00:23:25.00\00:23:27.44 the sickly, and the indigent because, 00:23:27.47\00:23:30.41 if they multiplied, they would only weaken 00:23:30.47\00:23:32.87 the social fabric of the nation as a whole. " 00:23:32.91\00:23:35.81 This is just a cruel thinking, this is not the heart of God. 00:23:35.84\00:23:38.38 You know, I had another passage, I was going to read 00:23:38.41\00:23:40.78 but I don't have enough time 00:23:40.82\00:23:42.18 but go read Revelation 18. 00:23:42.22\00:23:43.55 Go read Revelation 18 and look and see 00:23:43.59\00:23:47.42 how God will bring punishment upon those in the end 00:23:47.46\00:23:50.76 who have built wealth off of... 00:23:50.79\00:23:52.33 of the lower-class people 00:23:52.36\00:23:53.83 who built wealth off the needy 00:23:53.86\00:23:55.20 and who have, you know, just hoarded all the riches 00:23:55.23\00:23:57.53 and all the wealth for themselves and not sharing... 00:23:57.57\00:23:59.87 they... they will meet their demise, 00:23:59.90\00:24:01.57 my Friends, God has called us to love one another 00:24:01.60\00:24:04.34 as we love ourselves 00:24:04.37\00:24:05.77 and as He loves us 00:24:05.81\00:24:07.14 and that, my Friends, is what we see here in Monday's Lesson... 00:24:07.18\00:24:09.94 God's Provision for the Poor. 00:24:09.98\00:24:11.31 Let us read the Bible and let us bring our lives 00:24:11.35\00:24:13.45 in harmony with His counsel. 00:24:13.48\00:24:15.25 Jill: Amen, thank you so much, Ryan, 00:24:15.28\00:24:17.39 what a wonderful reminder for each one of us. 00:24:17.42\00:24:19.99 We're going to take a short break, we'll be right back. 00:24:20.06\00:24:22.29 Music... 00:24:22.32\00:24:28.00 Ever wish you could watch a 3ABN Sabbath School Panel again 00:24:28.03\00:24:31.23 or share it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? 00:27:00.92\00:27:03.02 No one is good but One, that is, God. 00:27:03.05\00:27:06.25 But if you want to enter into life, 00:27:06.29\00:27:09.49 keep the commandments. " 00:27:09.52\00:27:10.86 I could spend a lot of time on 17... 00:27:10.89\00:27:12.33 Jesus was introducing to him 00:27:12.36\00:27:14.66 the God that he thought about as just the Teacher. 00:27:14.70\00:27:18.33 He says, "There must be a reason you're calling Me good, 00:27:18.37\00:27:21.30 are you recognizing something in Me 00:27:21.37\00:27:23.10 that's greater than the rabbis?" 00:27:23.14\00:27:24.84 And Jesus is in essence saying to him, 00:27:24.87\00:27:27.08 "This is in fact true but I'm not going to tell you I'm God 00:27:27.11\00:27:30.25 but, in fact, I'm better than just a teacher. " 00:27:30.28\00:27:33.75 Verse 18, He said to Him, "Which ones?" 00:27:33.78\00:27:37.25 And this is really a question that many Christians ask today, 00:27:37.29\00:27:41.82 "Which commandments do I need to keep?" 00:27:41.86\00:27:43.73 Rather than keeping them all, which ones do I need to keep? 00:27:43.76\00:27:46.83 There are those people that think that Sabbath is irrelevant 00:27:46.90\00:27:49.86 "I don't have to keep that one to enter into eternal life" 00:27:49.90\00:27:52.87 because many people link that to "works" 00:27:52.90\00:27:55.34 but it's in fact not. 00:27:55.37\00:27:56.94 "And the Lord said to him... " 00:27:56.97\00:27:58.31 knowing this young man's heart He made it clear 00:27:58.34\00:28:01.61 and notice he didn't focus on the first four Commandments 00:28:01.64\00:28:04.75 because those were things that were very, very stringent 00:28:04.78\00:28:07.85 among the Jewish people. 00:28:07.88\00:28:09.22 They were very strict about keeping the Commandments. 00:28:09.25\00:28:11.69 The Lord focused on the issues of his heart. 00:28:11.72\00:28:14.06 He says in the verse continuing, 00:28:14.09\00:28:16.16 "You shall not murder, 00:28:16.19\00:28:18.69 you shall not commit adultery, 00:28:18.73\00:28:20.50 you shall not steal, 00:28:20.53\00:28:21.86 you shall not bear false witness, 00:28:21.90\00:28:23.43 honor your father and your mother, 00:28:23.47\00:28:24.97 and, you shall love your neighbor as yourself. " 00:28:25.00\00:28:27.50 So, He focused on the social aspects of the Ten Commandments. 00:28:27.54\00:28:32.77 Verse 20, "The young man said to Him... " 00:28:32.81\00:28:35.81 now, notice this, his perfection came out, 00:28:35.84\00:28:38.88 "I'm just so spotless, Lord, 00:28:38.91\00:28:40.58 all these things I have kept from my youth, 00:28:40.62\00:28:43.28 why do I still lack? 00:28:43.32\00:28:45.52 I mean, I've been very particular 00:28:45.55\00:28:47.56 about keeping the Commandments, 00:28:47.59\00:28:49.52 you mean to tell me, 00:28:49.56\00:28:50.89 I've been so particular about the letter of the law 00:28:50.93\00:28:53.80 but there's a spirit of the law that's still being violated?" 00:28:53.83\00:28:57.67 The Lord was saying "yes" to him, 00:28:57.70\00:28:59.63 so he says, "What do I still lack?" 00:28:59.67\00:29:01.54 And Jesus said to him, 00:29:01.57\00:29:03.14 "If you want to be perfect, 00:29:03.20\00:29:04.57 go, sell what you have and give to the poor, 00:29:04.61\00:29:09.04 and you will have treasure in heaven; 00:29:09.08\00:29:11.25 and come follow Me. " 00:29:11.28\00:29:12.61 Now, this story caused a lot of consternation 00:29:12.65\00:29:15.12 among the disciples. 00:29:15.15\00:29:16.48 Those who were listening, they were thinking, 00:29:16.52\00:29:17.85 "Well, this is really not... 00:29:17.89\00:29:19.22 You're making eternal life hard. " 00:29:19.25\00:29:21.12 Peter said, "Who then can be saved?" 00:29:21.16\00:29:22.96 The disciples, as a matter of fact, 00:29:22.99\00:29:24.73 almost in chorus, "Well, who then can be saved?" 00:29:24.76\00:29:27.16 And the Lord said, 00:29:27.20\00:29:28.53 "You know, if you could leave houses and lands 00:29:28.56\00:29:30.57 and mothers and fathers and sisters and brothers 00:29:30.60\00:29:32.77 for my sake and the kingdom, 00:29:32.80\00:29:34.14 I'm going to bless you tremendously. 00:29:34.17\00:29:36.00 You will have eternal life 00:29:36.04\00:29:38.54 but in this life you'll have a 100 times more 00:29:38.57\00:29:41.68 than you presently have. " 00:29:41.71\00:29:43.31 Let me put a pin in that. 00:29:43.35\00:29:45.25 God can provide more for us 00:29:45.28\00:29:47.12 than we can provide for ourselves. 00:29:47.15\00:29:49.38 So, this provisional aspect of our mindset 00:29:49.45\00:29:52.39 thinking that, well, if I get a really good job, 00:29:52.42\00:29:54.29 very good education, 00:29:54.32\00:29:55.66 a really good position in a company, 00:29:55.69\00:29:57.03 a really good house... 00:29:57.06\00:29:58.39 a really good standard in the community, 00:29:58.43\00:29:59.96 then all my needs are going to be provided. 00:30:00.00\00:30:01.33 God is saying, "You can get all that, 00:30:01.36\00:30:02.70 and you still cannot beat My ability to provide for you. " 00:30:02.73\00:30:06.17 So, the question is, "What did Jesus mean when He said, 00:30:06.20\00:30:09.57 'If you want to be perfect... ' " 00:30:09.60\00:30:11.74 this is where his possessions conflicted with his God 00:30:11.77\00:30:15.34 because his possession became his god. 00:30:15.41\00:30:18.08 That's why he couldn't see beyond who Jesus really is. 00:30:18.11\00:30:21.62 Now, let's look at the impact. 00:30:21.65\00:30:23.39 The impact of money and things above God. 00:30:23.42\00:30:26.92 Matthew 19 verse 22, 00:30:26.96\00:30:29.16 the impact comes out in verse 22, 00:30:29.19\00:30:31.49 "But when the young man heard that saying, 00:30:31.53\00:30:34.76 he went away... " how? 00:30:34.80\00:30:36.26 "sorrowful, for he had great possessions. " 00:30:36.30\00:30:41.07 This is a very significant aspect 00:30:41.10\00:30:43.27 especially in the world we live in today. 00:30:43.30\00:30:45.74 I mean, I've been around the world quite a bit, 00:30:45.77\00:30:47.18 seen a lot of countries... 00:30:47.21\00:30:48.54 and whenever I come back home, 00:30:48.58\00:30:49.91 the thing I remember the most is either the... 00:30:49.94\00:30:53.58 the amazing poverty or the opulent luxury. 00:30:53.62\00:30:57.62 I'm often impressed, 00:30:57.65\00:30:58.99 "Wow! that country hardly had anything. " 00:30:59.02\00:31:01.12 "Wow! that country had just too much. " 00:31:01.16\00:31:03.19 We are very few times in a place that is very perfectly balanced 00:31:03.22\00:31:07.63 because the mindset... 00:31:07.66\00:31:09.00 that's why it's important like us to live in the country 00:31:09.03\00:31:11.20 because we got trees... 00:31:11.23\00:31:12.97 we got an abundance of trees. 00:31:13.00\00:31:15.67 We can breathe clean oxygen, praise God for that. 00:31:15.70\00:31:18.57 We don't walk out of our doors every day and think, 00:31:18.64\00:31:21.48 "Let me go to the mall across the street... " 00:31:21.51\00:31:22.84 no, across the street is a field. 00:31:22.91\00:31:25.35 We don't even have a Stop Light. 00:31:25.38\00:31:26.72 So, it helps to kind of minimize the mentality of possessions 00:31:26.75\00:31:30.99 when you live out in the country. 00:31:31.02\00:31:33.29 But the impact of it is verse 26, 00:31:33.32\00:31:35.36 the impact of money on the things... 00:31:35.39\00:31:37.36 on things... the impact of money in things on salvation. 00:31:37.43\00:31:40.90 Matthew 16:26, 00:31:40.96\00:31:43.23 "For what profit is it to a man 00:31:43.26\00:31:45.43 if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?" 00:31:45.47\00:31:49.24 Or "What will a man give in exchange for his soul?" 00:31:49.27\00:31:52.74 When you're grasping for things remember that passage. 00:31:52.77\00:31:56.21 Even when its brand new and shiny, 00:31:56.24\00:31:58.85 in just a short period of time, 00:31:58.88\00:32:01.45 it loses its impact on satisfaction. 00:32:01.48\00:32:04.15 When a person is ill and near death, 00:32:04.19\00:32:06.79 they don't say, "I need more possessions... " 00:32:06.82\00:32:08.82 they're praying for more time. 00:32:08.86\00:32:10.36 Don't let your possessions possess you. 00:32:10.39\00:32:12.56 Secondly, don't allow yourself to be covetous. 00:32:12.59\00:32:16.30 Don't let your possessions covet you 00:32:16.33\00:32:18.40 or covet your possessions. 00:32:18.43\00:32:20.10 Let's look at a couple of examples. 00:32:20.14\00:32:21.47 Luke 12 and verse 15, 00:32:21.50\00:32:22.87 "And He said to them, 00:32:22.90\00:32:24.34 'Take heed and beware of covetousness, 00:32:24.37\00:32:27.01 for one's life does not consist 00:32:27.04\00:32:28.64 in the abundance of the things he possesses. '" 00:32:28.68\00:32:30.88 When you die... all that stuff is left behind 00:32:30.91\00:32:33.08 who are you going to give it to? 00:32:33.11\00:32:34.48 Nobody ever went to the cemetery with a U-Haul. 00:32:34.52\00:32:38.25 Nobody ever got buried in a mausoleum of stuff. 00:32:38.29\00:32:41.96 Now, in Egypt, they did that... 00:32:41.99\00:32:43.46 but nobody was rowing, 00:32:43.49\00:32:45.16 bones... when they got into there too, they turned into dust 00:32:45.19\00:32:47.33 and those bones stayed there 00:32:47.36\00:32:48.70 and stayed in those... those tombs for decades... 00:32:48.73\00:32:51.23 for millennia as it were. 00:32:51.27\00:32:52.60 Possessions often affect people's lives, 00:32:52.63\00:32:55.67 like for example, 00:32:55.70\00:32:57.04 Abraham and Lot were affected by their possessions. 00:32:57.07\00:32:58.67 Look at Genesis 13 verse 6, 00:32:58.71\00:33:00.11 "Now the land was not able to support them, 00:33:00.14\00:33:02.44 that they might dwell together, 00:33:02.48\00:33:04.75 for their possessions were so great 00:33:04.78\00:33:06.61 that they could not dwell together. " 00:33:06.65\00:33:08.42 That's how it happens in some family members... 00:33:08.45\00:33:10.55 some homes are so packed with stuff... 00:33:10.59\00:33:12.25 you move into somebody's house, you're bringing your stuff. 00:33:12.29\00:33:14.62 I remember moving... 00:33:14.66\00:33:15.99 we were moving to Thompsonville here 00:33:16.02\00:33:17.83 and we were moving around from house to house 00:33:17.86\00:33:19.59 until we finally got a place to live. 00:33:19.63\00:33:21.93 We still have stuff in our barn 00:33:21.96\00:33:23.73 that we haven't touched for ten years. 00:33:23.77\00:33:25.77 because we said... 00:33:25.80\00:33:27.14 and somebody said, "Well, just throw it away. " 00:33:27.17\00:33:28.90 But the mindset is, "Well, we might throw away something 00:33:28.94\00:33:31.51 that really is needed for us. " 00:33:31.54\00:33:33.27 That's the impact of possessions. 00:33:33.31\00:33:34.98 It also affected Isaac in the minds of the Philistines. 00:33:35.01\00:33:38.81 Look at Genesis chapter 26 verse 12, 00:33:38.85\00:33:40.78 "Then Isaac sowed in that land, 00:33:40.82\00:33:42.32 and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; 00:33:42.35\00:33:44.32 and the LORD blessed him. " 00:33:44.35\00:33:45.69 And verse 13, 00:33:45.72\00:33:47.06 "The man began to prosper, 00:33:47.09\00:33:48.42 and continued prospering until he became very prosperous... " 00:33:48.46\00:33:50.73 Notice, he had to prosper... became very prosperous 00:33:50.76\00:33:53.66 until he prospered. 00:33:53.70\00:33:55.03 Verse 14, "For he had possessions of flocks 00:33:55.06\00:33:57.67 and possessions of herds and a great number of servants. 00:33:57.70\00:34:00.24 So the Philistines envied him. " 00:34:00.27\00:34:02.64 That's what happens when your possessions possess you, 00:34:02.67\00:34:05.54 people become envious of your possessions. 00:34:05.57\00:34:07.48 If somebody comes to visit you, don't show them your stuff... 00:34:07.51\00:34:10.75 show them, Christ. 00:34:10.78\00:34:12.11 Panel: Amen... amen. 00:34:12.15\00:34:13.48 Lomacang: Also, Jacob and Esau had troubles in this area. 00:34:13.52\00:34:14.85 Look at Genesis 36 verse 6, 00:34:14.88\00:34:16.75 "Then Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, 00:34:16.79\00:34:18.99 and all the persons of his household, 00:34:19.02\00:34:20.46 his cattle and all his animals, 00:34:20.49\00:34:22.02 and all his goods which he had gained in the land of Canaan, 00:34:22.06\00:34:24.79 and went to a country away from the presence 00:34:24.83\00:34:26.96 of his brother Jacob. 00:34:27.00\00:34:28.33 For their possessions were too great 00:34:28.36\00:34:30.10 for them to dwell together, 00:34:30.17\00:34:31.50 and the land where they were strangers could not support them 00:34:31.53\00:34:34.94 because of their livestock. " 00:34:34.97\00:34:36.54 Possessions possessing us. 00:34:36.57\00:34:37.91 Third point: The Deception of possessions. 00:34:37.94\00:34:40.78 1st Timothy 6 verse 17, 00:34:40.81\00:34:42.74 verse 7, "For we brought nothing into this world, 00:34:42.78\00:34:45.68 and it is certain we can carry nothing out. " 00:34:45.71\00:34:48.42 The prioritizing of possessions, Matthew 6:33, 00:34:48.45\00:34:51.12 "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, 00:34:51.15\00:34:53.46 and all these things will be added to you. " 00:34:53.49\00:34:55.49 And the divinity that brings to us the promise of our needs. 00:34:55.52\00:35:01.20 Philippians 4:19, 00:35:01.26\00:35:02.60 "And my God shall supply all your need 00:35:02.63\00:35:04.37 according to His riches in glory... " 00:35:04.40\00:35:06.53 here's the point, 00:35:06.57\00:35:07.90 Don't let your possessions possess you. 00:35:07.94\00:35:09.64 Panel: Hmmm... amen... amen... amen. 00:35:09.67\00:35:11.77 Dinzey: I'm going to have to remember that... 00:35:11.81\00:35:13.14 don't let your possessions possess you. 00:35:13.17\00:35:14.91 And now we are now on 00:35:14.94\00:35:16.91 Wednesday's portion of the Lesson: Zacchaeus 00:35:16.95\00:35:20.02 and that's the title of the Lesson 00:35:20.05\00:35:22.92 and Zacchaeus was a wealthy Jew. 00:35:22.95\00:35:25.75 He was very rich 00:35:25.79\00:35:27.12 and we take his story in Luke chapter 19, 00:35:27.16\00:35:30.69 please join me beginning in verse 1, 00:35:30.73\00:35:32.99 "Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. 00:35:33.03\00:35:36.67 Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus 00:35:36.70\00:35:40.24 who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich... " 00:35:40.30\00:35:45.87 the Bible says. 00:35:45.94\00:35:47.28 Now, here we see something interesting that the... 00:35:47.31\00:35:51.11 that the tax collectors or publicans 00:35:51.15\00:35:53.11 as you have also, they've been referred to, 00:35:53.15\00:35:54.82 they were considered that they had gained their riches 00:35:54.85\00:36:00.06 through taking more than they were supposed to 00:36:00.12\00:36:03.43 and they were hated. 00:36:03.46\00:36:05.26 They were hated by... 00:36:05.29\00:36:07.03 here we have Zacchaeus that is a Chief Tax Collector. 00:36:07.06\00:36:10.27 So, you may consider that 00:36:10.30\00:36:12.27 if they hated the regular tax collectors, 00:36:12.30\00:36:14.77 they hated him more because he was a Chief Tax Collector. 00:36:14.80\00:36:18.17 And notice how we see verse 3, 00:36:18.21\00:36:21.01 "And he sought to see who Jesus was; 00:36:21.04\00:36:24.08 he could not because of crowd for he was a short... 00:36:24.11\00:36:28.02 he was of short stature. " 00:36:28.05\00:36:29.48 And perhaps some people are remembering that little song, 00:36:29.52\00:36:32.32 Zacchaeus was a wee little man and a wee little man was he. 00:36:32.35\00:36:35.12 Panel: Laughter. 00:36:35.16\00:36:36.49 Dinzey: And so, because he was short of stature, 00:36:36.52\00:36:38.89 it says in verse 4, 00:36:38.93\00:36:40.40 "So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree 00:36:40.43\00:36:45.83 to see Him. " 00:36:45.87\00:36:47.20 Who knows when the last time was that when he climbed a tree 00:36:47.24\00:36:50.84 but because Jesus was coming by, 00:36:50.87\00:36:53.14 and he was eager to see Him, 00:36:53.17\00:36:55.61 it says that he ran up into... 00:36:55.64\00:36:58.05 and climbed up on a sycamore tree. 00:36:58.11\00:36:59.91 For He was going to pass by that way 00:36:59.95\00:37:01.75 he calculated his move 00:37:01.78\00:37:03.52 and he was going to take a look at Jesus. 00:37:03.55\00:37:05.22 Apparently, he wasn't even interested in talking to Him. 00:37:05.25\00:37:07.76 He just wanted to see who Jesus was. 00:37:07.79\00:37:09.72 And when Jesus came to the place, 00:37:09.79\00:37:11.69 He stopped... 00:37:11.73\00:37:13.26 He looked up and saw him and said to him, 00:37:13.29\00:37:16.87 "Zacchaeus, make haste, 00:37:16.90\00:37:19.70 and come down; 00:37:19.73\00:37:21.07 for today I must stay at your house. " 00:37:21.10\00:37:25.07 Wow! I love that part. 00:37:25.11\00:37:28.04 What a wonderful thing to hear for Zacchaeus. 00:37:28.08\00:37:31.31 He got even better than he hoped. 00:37:31.35\00:37:34.02 "Jesus... coming to my house?" 00:37:34.05\00:37:36.65 He knew that people didn't really like him, 00:37:36.69\00:37:39.45 but here comes Jesus to his house. 00:37:39.49\00:37:42.29 You know, 00:37:42.32\00:37:43.66 and I think Jesus wants to come to your house as well... 00:37:43.69\00:37:45.43 wants to come to my house 00:37:45.46\00:37:47.70 and would you do the same? 00:37:47.73\00:37:49.93 Make haste and make preparations for Jesus. 00:37:49.96\00:37:53.54 Now, it says there in verse 6, 00:37:53.60\00:37:55.64 "And he made haste, and came down, 00:37:55.67\00:37:57.67 and received Him joyfully. " 00:37:57.71\00:38:00.51 But when they saw it... now here are the people, 00:38:00.54\00:38:03.58 the people sometimes create problems for us don't they? 00:38:03.61\00:38:08.58 So, he... when the people saw... they all complained, saying, 00:38:08.62\00:38:13.42 "He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner. " 00:38:13.46\00:38:17.83 Isn't that interesting... 00:38:17.86\00:38:19.19 that sinners call other people sinners. 00:38:19.23\00:38:21.76 Panel: Laughter. 00:38:21.80\00:38:23.13 Dinzey: Apparently, they're trying to say, 00:38:23.16\00:38:24.70 "Well, we're not sinners... " 00:38:24.73\00:38:26.07 They are really saying, "He is worse than we are, 00:38:26.10\00:38:28.24 why is He going to their house?" 00:38:28.30\00:38:31.01 And I take you now to Luke chapter 5 00:38:31.04\00:38:33.71 because here's an interesting story that we must consider 00:38:33.74\00:38:37.45 as we talk about Zacchaeus. 00:38:37.48\00:38:38.81 And we are also comparing a little bit... 00:38:38.85\00:38:40.85 the rich young ruler and Zacchaeus. 00:38:40.88\00:38:43.12 Let's look at Luke chapter 5 really quick, 00:38:43.15\00:38:45.19 and begin in verse 27, 00:38:45.22\00:38:46.72 "After these things, He went out and saw a tax collector... " 00:38:46.76\00:38:49.59 that's Jesus... 00:38:49.62\00:38:50.96 that He was... He saw a tax collector... 00:38:50.99\00:38:52.83 "named, Levi... " or Levee... 00:38:52.86\00:38:55.50 "sitting at the tax office. 00:38:55.53\00:38:57.00 And He said to him, 'Follow Me. ' 00:38:57.03\00:38:59.37 So he left all, rose up, and followed Him. " 00:38:59.40\00:39:03.44 That's Luke chapter 5. 00:39:03.47\00:39:04.81 "Then, Levee or Levi gave Him a great feast in his own house. 00:39:04.84\00:39:10.35 And there was a great number of tax collectors 00:39:10.41\00:39:13.11 and others who sat down with them. 00:39:13.15\00:39:15.32 And their scribes and the Pharisees 00:39:15.35\00:39:17.49 complained against His disciples, saying, 00:39:17.52\00:39:19.22 'Why do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?' 00:39:19.25\00:39:22.89 Jesus answered and said to them, 00:39:22.92\00:39:24.59 'Those who are well have no need of a physician, 00:39:24.63\00:39:29.13 but those who are sick, 00:39:29.16\00:39:30.77 I have not come to call the righteous, 00:39:30.80\00:39:33.97 but sinners, to repentance. " 00:39:34.00\00:39:35.60 And this is why Jesus went to the house of Zacchaeus. 00:39:35.64\00:39:40.38 So, as we consider this story, 00:39:40.41\00:39:44.05 we must consider 00:39:44.08\00:39:45.41 that Jesus went there not to have a good meal. 00:39:45.45\00:39:47.98 Jesus went there because this man needed salvation. 00:39:48.05\00:39:52.02 And the Bible doesn't tell us what... 00:39:52.05\00:39:54.59 what conversation they had 00:39:54.62\00:39:56.62 but it's the result of Jesus being there 00:39:56.66\00:39:59.86 tells you that it was a conversation 00:39:59.89\00:40:02.06 that drew Zacchaeus to Jesus... 00:40:02.10\00:40:05.17 drew Zacchaeus to Jesus 00:40:05.20\00:40:07.17 to understand that he needed the salvation 00:40:07.20\00:40:10.21 that Jesus came to offer. 00:40:10.24\00:40:11.81 Now, let's go back to Luke chapter 19 00:40:11.84\00:40:15.34 and go to verse 8, 00:40:15.38\00:40:16.81 "Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, 00:40:16.85\00:40:18.51 'Lord... 00:40:18.55\00:40:19.88 Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; 00:40:19.91\00:40:24.72 and if I have taken anything from anyone 00:40:24.75\00:40:28.46 by false accusation, I restore fourfold. " 00:40:28.49\00:40:32.09 Wow! now this is a marvelous thing that he said 00:40:32.16\00:40:35.86 and notice verse 9, "And Jesus said to him, 00:40:35.90\00:40:39.60 'today... '" there must have been joy 00:40:39.63\00:40:41.90 because the Bible says, "There's joy... 00:40:41.94\00:40:44.17 more joy in heaven over one sinner that repents 00:40:44.21\00:40:46.88 than the ninety-nine who need no repentance. " 00:40:46.94\00:40:49.58 And Jesus surely was full of joy 00:40:49.61\00:40:51.81 "And Jesus said to him, 00:40:51.85\00:40:53.18 'Today salvation has come to this house, 00:40:53.21\00:40:57.19 because he also is a son of Abraham... " 00:40:57.22\00:41:01.56 Praise the Lord! 00:41:01.59\00:41:03.29 When Zacchaeus heard that he must have rejoiced 00:41:03.32\00:41:06.83 to understand, "Hey, you are accepted... 00:41:06.90\00:41:09.56 you are a son of Abraham. " 00:41:09.60\00:41:11.67 And it says there in verse 10, 00:41:11.70\00:41:13.74 "For the Son of Man has come 00:41:13.77\00:41:15.54 to seek and to save that which was lost. " 00:41:15.57\00:41:19.64 Great rejoicing... 00:41:19.67\00:41:21.01 the best thing that Zacchaeus could have ever done 00:41:21.04\00:41:23.24 in his life... he did it on that day. 00:41:23.28\00:41:25.11 Went to see Jesus... 00:41:25.15\00:41:27.18 went to find... made time to spend time with Jesus 00:41:27.22\00:41:31.85 or to just look at Him. 00:41:31.89\00:41:34.06 But here Jesus went further. 00:41:34.09\00:41:36.69 You know, the Bible says that Jesus came to seek and to save 00:41:36.73\00:41:39.93 that which was lost. 00:41:40.00\00:41:41.33 Panel: That's right. 00:41:41.36\00:41:42.70 Dinzey: Jesus knew that He would meet Zacchaeus that day 00:41:42.73\00:41:44.70 and this is a marvelous thing. 00:41:44.73\00:41:47.14 Now, I'm going to read to you from Desire of Ages, page 555, 00:41:47.20\00:41:50.71 it says, "No repentance is genuine 00:41:50.74\00:41:53.54 that does not work reformation. 00:41:53.58\00:41:56.31 The righteousness of Christ is not a cloak 00:41:56.34\00:41:59.91 to cover unconfessed and unforsaken sin; 00:41:59.95\00:42:03.49 it is the principle of life that transforms the character 00:42:03.52\00:42:08.02 and controls the conduct. 00:42:08.06\00:42:09.62 Holiness is wholeness for God; 00:42:09.66\00:42:12.36 it is the entire surrender of heart and life 00:42:12.39\00:42:15.86 to the indwelling of the principles of heaven. " 00:42:15.93\00:42:19.37 We don't have any record that Jesus says, 00:42:19.40\00:42:21.44 "Hey, Zacchaeus, you're going to have to... 00:42:21.47\00:42:23.44 you're going to have to turn... return things back 00:42:23.47\00:42:25.81 and give fourfold. " 00:42:25.84\00:42:27.68 No, this came out of his heart 00:42:27.71\00:42:29.84 and we praise the Lord that Zacchaeus made that decision. 00:42:29.88\00:42:34.35 Now, in the Lesson, 00:42:34.38\00:42:35.72 I'm going to read this from the Lesson, 00:42:35.75\00:42:37.09 it says, "Zacchaeus and the rich young ruler 00:42:37.12\00:42:39.72 had some things in common. 00:42:39.75\00:42:41.62 Both were rich, 00:42:41.66\00:42:43.36 both wanted to see Jesus, and both wanted eternal life. 00:42:43.43\00:42:49.33 But here the similarities stop. " 00:42:49.36\00:42:52.70 And that's a very good point that the Lesson brings out. 00:42:52.73\00:42:56.00 And it says, "And notice that when Zacchaeus said 00:42:56.04\00:42:58.81 that he would give 'half of my goods... '" 00:42:58.87\00:43:01.14 Luke 19:8, "to the poor 00:43:01.18\00:43:03.18 Jesus accepted this gesture 00:43:03.24\00:43:05.18 as an expression of a true conversion experience. " 00:43:05.21\00:43:08.85 And the Lesson brings this thing out 00:43:08.88\00:43:11.19 and I think it's kind of cute... a little bit interesting. 00:43:11.22\00:43:13.56 "He didn't say to him, 'Sorry, Zac... tsk... 00:43:13.59\00:43:17.13 but like the rich young ruler, it's all or nothing. 00:43:17.16\00:43:21.93 Half is not going to cut it. '" 00:43:21.96\00:43:25.10 Why? You see the rich young ruler, 00:43:25.13\00:43:28.17 his God became his possessions. 00:43:28.20\00:43:31.27 He let possessions possess him. 00:43:31.31\00:43:34.34 That was his idol 00:43:34.38\00:43:35.71 but apparently to Zacchaeus, that was not an issue. 00:43:35.74\00:43:38.05 That was not an issue for Zacchaeus... 00:43:38.08\00:43:40.38 his possessions were not his God. 00:43:40.42\00:43:42.55 When we look at this Desire of Ages, page 555, 00:43:42.58\00:43:46.45 we read this... very powerful, 00:43:46.49\00:43:48.36 "When the rich young ruler had turned away from Jesus, 00:43:48.39\00:43:51.33 the disciples had marveled at their Master's saying, 00:43:51.39\00:43:54.30 'How hard... '" 00:43:54.33\00:43:55.66 notice I said, "rich young ruler" 00:43:55.70\00:43:57.70 "When the rich young ruler had turned away from Jesus, 00:43:57.73\00:44:00.54 the disciples had marveled at their Master's saying, 00:44:00.57\00:44:03.30 'How hard is it for them that trust in riches 00:44:03.34\00:44:07.58 to enter into the kingdom of God!' 00:44:07.61\00:44:10.08 They had exclaimed one to another, 00:44:10.11\00:44:12.55 'Who then can be saved?' 00:44:12.58\00:44:13.98 Now they had a demonstration of the truth of Christ's words, 00:44:14.02\00:44:19.29 'The things which are impossible with men 00:44:19.32\00:44:22.09 are possible with God. '" 00:44:22.12\00:44:23.46 Mark 10:24 and 26 and Luke 18:27. 00:44:23.49\00:44:26.73 "They saw how, through the grace of God, 00:44:26.76\00:44:30.53 a rich man could enter into the kingdom. " 00:44:30.57\00:44:34.50 So, we see here that every single individual 00:44:34.54\00:44:38.44 has the opportunity for salvation. 00:44:38.47\00:44:40.48 We're talking about the least of these. 00:44:40.51\00:44:42.88 Even people that others say, "Oh no, that person over there... 00:44:42.91\00:44:46.41 can't be saved... impossible. " 00:44:46.45\00:44:48.78 Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost. 00:44:48.82\00:44:52.15 And today, Jesus continues to seek and to save 00:44:52.19\00:44:55.46 that which was lost. 00:44:55.49\00:44:56.83 We may not see Him physically going from place to place, 00:44:56.86\00:44:59.16 but in the person of His disciples, 00:44:59.19\00:45:01.80 which you and we are, 00:45:01.83\00:45:03.43 Jesus is seeking to save that which was lost. 00:45:03.47\00:45:06.23 And I praise the Lord for 3ABN 00:45:06.27\00:45:07.90 because through 3ABN, Jesus continues to seek and to save 00:45:07.94\00:45:12.04 that which was lost. 00:45:12.07\00:45:13.41 And if you have been a recipient of being saved through Jesus 00:45:13.44\00:45:16.44 through 3ABN, we want to hear about it. 00:45:16.48\00:45:18.45 Give us a call or write us. 00:45:18.48\00:45:20.15 Jill: Amen. 00:45:20.18\00:45:21.98 Perrin: Wow, I love the thoughts there about the rich young ruler 00:45:22.05\00:45:25.55 and Zacchaeus because it reminds us 00:45:25.62\00:45:27.46 that: God loves the poor... God loves the rich 00:45:27.49\00:45:30.49 and He certainly cares about each person... 00:45:30.53\00:45:33.26 that we have the same need 00:45:33.29\00:45:34.83 and so I lead us to another rich man... 00:45:34.86\00:45:37.17 consider the man Job. 00:45:37.20\00:45:39.20 There's a lot to consider in 42 chapters 00:45:39.23\00:45:41.84 of spiritual wrestling with God over suffering. 00:45:41.87\00:45:44.67 But it's in that spiritual wrestling with God 00:45:44.71\00:45:47.48 that Job's character is revealed here. 00:45:47.51\00:45:49.98 Now, I ask you, "What would you love to hear 00:45:50.01\00:45:53.65 God say about you?" 00:45:53.72\00:45:55.38 There are some things that God says in the Bible about 00:45:55.42\00:45:58.15 people that we wouldn't want to hear. 00:45:58.19\00:45:59.79 But I don't care what others might say about me 00:45:59.82\00:46:02.69 but I want to know what God says about me 00:46:02.72\00:46:05.03 and so, we find out what God says about Job here 00:46:05.06\00:46:07.86 in chapter 1... 00:46:07.90\00:46:09.36 Satan... whose name means the adversary, 00:46:09.40\00:46:11.97 has come into God's presence... 00:46:12.03\00:46:13.74 we're not told exactly when or where this happens 00:46:13.77\00:46:16.94 but based on what God says here in chapter 1 verse 8, 00:46:16.97\00:46:20.11 we realize that he's making a claim that 00:46:20.14\00:46:23.18 his kingdom of sinfulness and selfishness 00:46:23.21\00:46:26.15 is superior to God's Kingdom and God's Government 00:46:26.18\00:46:28.78 of love and submission. 00:46:28.82\00:46:30.45 And so, God responds in chapter 1 verse 8 saying, 00:46:30.49\00:46:34.12 "Lord God said to Satan, 00:46:34.16\00:46:35.96 'Have you considered My servant Job?'" 00:46:35.99\00:46:38.39 And there's the title of the Lesson. 00:46:38.46\00:46:40.90 "There is none like him on the earth, 00:46:40.93\00:46:43.37 a blameless and upright man, 00:46:43.40\00:46:45.60 one who fears God, and shuns evil?" 00:46:45.63\00:46:48.34 Ah, man! 00:46:48.37\00:46:49.70 That is the equivalent of 00:46:49.74\00:46:51.07 "Well done good and faithful servant. " 00:46:51.11\00:46:52.71 God points to Job and says, 00:46:52.74\00:46:54.51 "Here is a person who has My righteousness... 00:46:54.54\00:46:57.21 he's just like Me. " 00:46:57.25\00:46:58.58 Well, Satan is unconvinced. 00:46:58.61\00:47:00.12 He accuses God essentially of abusing His power 00:47:00.15\00:47:03.35 and buying Job's righteousness 00:47:03.39\00:47:05.82 as if you can pay for a person to love you 00:47:05.85\00:47:08.69 and to take on your righteousness. 00:47:08.72\00:47:10.69 And so, all of Job's physical carnal prosperity 00:47:10.73\00:47:15.06 is wiped away 00:47:15.10\00:47:16.43 and again, Satan comes before the Lord 00:47:16.46\00:47:18.50 and in chapter 2 verse 3, 00:47:18.53\00:47:20.34 God points again to Job and says, 00:47:20.37\00:47:23.00 "Have you considered My servant Job?" 00:47:23.04\00:47:25.61 And repeats the same... the same words there. 00:47:25.64\00:47:28.74 So, Job's righteousness was not based upon 00:47:28.78\00:47:31.85 the things that he owned. 00:47:31.88\00:47:33.55 God said, "I look into his heart and I see that he loves me 00:47:33.62\00:47:37.25 and he is displaying what I am like. " 00:47:37.29\00:47:39.05 Even when Job's wife says, 00:47:39.09\00:47:41.49 "Why do you hold fast to your integrity?" 00:47:41.52\00:47:43.76 In chapter 2, 00:47:43.79\00:47:45.13 "Curse God and die!" 00:47:45.16\00:47:46.49 In verse 10 of chapter 2, 00:47:46.53\00:47:48.90 it says, "In all of this, Job did not sin with his lips. " 00:47:48.93\00:47:53.17 Job doesn't hear these words spoken about him... 00:47:53.20\00:47:56.44 he just does what is right because it is right. 00:47:56.47\00:47:59.67 His blessings have not gone to his head 00:47:59.71\00:48:02.04 and this becomes then the backdrop 00:48:02.08\00:48:05.05 for the conversation we're going to hear next. 00:48:05.08\00:48:07.28 In Job chapter 29, verses 12 to 16, 00:48:07.32\00:48:11.39 Job is... he's kind of looking into the past and saying, 00:48:11.42\00:48:15.76 "I... I long for the old days when I sat at the city gate... 00:48:15.79\00:48:20.10 when the young and the old respected me 00:48:20.13\00:48:22.56 and longed for my wisdom. " 00:48:22.60\00:48:23.97 But in verse 12, 00:48:24.00\00:48:25.33 we see one of the other things that he longs for. 00:48:25.37\00:48:27.54 "I delivered the poor who cried out, 00:48:27.57\00:48:30.91 the fatherless and the one who had no helper. 00:48:30.94\00:48:33.94 The blessing of a perishing man came upon me, 00:48:33.98\00:48:36.75 and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. 00:48:36.78\00:48:39.55 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; 00:48:39.58\00:48:42.22 My justice was like a robe and a turban. 00:48:42.28\00:48:44.82 I was eyes to the blind, 00:48:44.85\00:48:46.89 and I was feet to the lame. 00:48:46.92\00:48:48.92 I was a father to the poor... " 00:48:48.96\00:48:50.83 and this phrase right here 00:48:50.89\00:48:52.29 the end of verse 16, 00:48:52.36\00:48:53.70 "I searched out the case that I did not know. " 00:48:53.73\00:48:57.27 Panel: Hmmm... 00:48:57.30\00:48:58.63 Perrin: Job takes the initiative 00:48:58.70\00:49:00.27 he doesn't wait for someone to appear upon his doorstep, 00:49:00.30\00:49:03.51 he goes out and looks for those who are in need 00:49:03.54\00:49:06.11 and if you're applying for a job 00:49:06.17\00:49:07.71 and someone writes a reference letter for you, 00:49:07.74\00:49:09.88 you want them to say, "He takes initiative... 00:49:09.91\00:49:12.01 he doesn't wait to be told what to do, 00:49:12.05\00:49:14.05 he searches for what needs to be done. " 00:49:14.08\00:49:16.05 And Job here is just doing exactly what God does... 00:49:16.08\00:49:20.12 who is the good Shepherd... 00:49:20.16\00:49:21.59 who goes out into the night 00:49:21.62\00:49:22.99 searching for the sheep who is lost. 00:49:23.02\00:49:24.83 Revelation 3 verse 20, 00:49:24.86\00:49:26.83 we find that Jesus comes to our door... 00:49:26.86\00:49:29.93 He takes the initiative... 00:49:29.96\00:49:31.30 He says, "I'm standing at your door knocking 00:49:31.33\00:49:32.97 and calling to you. " 00:49:33.03\00:49:34.64 And Job does the same because 00:49:34.67\00:49:36.84 as 1st Peter says there in chapter 1 verse 4, 00:49:36.87\00:49:40.21 he is a partaker of the divine nature. 00:49:40.24\00:49:42.91 He is simply displaying the characteristics of God 00:49:42.94\00:49:46.05 that he has witnessed. 00:49:46.08\00:49:47.42 He's not waiting for someone to appear 00:49:47.45\00:49:49.22 to the window of his car with a cardboard sign... 00:49:49.25\00:49:51.92 he is the words of Jesus... 00:49:51.95\00:49:53.49 going out into the highways and the hedges, 00:49:53.52\00:49:55.72 rolling up his sleeves to be eyes to the blind... 00:49:55.76\00:49:58.63 feet to the lame... 00:49:58.66\00:50:00.00 and I know, sometimes, we might say, 00:50:00.03\00:50:02.23 "Lord, I'm willing to serve You if You do all the work for me. 00:50:02.26\00:50:06.30 If you plop it right here in my lap, 00:50:06.33\00:50:08.64 and make it impossible for me to step... step around, 00:50:08.67\00:50:11.97 then, I'm willing to take the last step 00:50:12.01\00:50:14.34 because I'm really kind of reluctant. " 00:50:14.38\00:50:16.61 Job... with the character of Christ that he has allowed 00:50:16.64\00:50:20.32 to fill him and cover him... 00:50:20.35\00:50:21.68 that's not what he does. 00:50:21.72\00:50:23.05 He does not do the bare minimum. 00:50:23.08\00:50:25.32 He says, "Lord, I'm going to go wherever you go 00:50:25.35\00:50:27.76 and I'm going to share with whoever it is 00:50:27.82\00:50:29.89 that... that you helped me to find. " 00:50:29.92\00:50:31.89 And he's not doing this because he read about it in Leviticus, 00:50:31.93\00:50:35.50 or Deuteronomy or Proverbs 00:50:35.53\00:50:37.00 which hadn't been written about yet, 00:50:37.03\00:50:38.57 he is doing it because of the prompting of the Holy Spirit 00:50:38.63\00:50:41.50 and that's what does it to us. 00:50:41.54\00:50:43.34 The Spirit moves upon us and says, 00:50:43.37\00:50:45.21 "Look at what I've given to you. 00:50:45.24\00:50:46.88 I've helped you when you were needy 00:50:46.91\00:50:48.44 and I have help for you to share with others. " 00:50:48.48\00:50:50.81 So, how can we look for those opportunities? 00:50:50.85\00:50:53.62 It can be as simple as becoming familiar with 00:50:53.65\00:50:56.42 other outreach ministries in your church... 00:50:56.45\00:50:59.15 in your city... 00:50:59.19\00:51:00.52 other believers who already have a network 00:51:00.56\00:51:02.72 of reaching out to those in need 00:51:02.76\00:51:04.63 and you then get on their e- mail list 00:51:04.66\00:51:07.00 so, you can be encouraged by seeing what's happening 00:51:07.03\00:51:09.26 and pray for missionaries and ministers 00:51:09.30\00:51:11.60 in other places 00:51:11.63\00:51:12.97 and using your finances if God directs you. 00:51:13.00\00:51:14.80 But a little closer to home, 00:51:14.84\00:51:16.64 I want to share from 6th volume of Testimonies, 296, 00:51:16.71\00:51:20.04 it says, "Wherever there is a church established, 00:51:20.08\00:51:23.35 all the members should engage actively in missionary work. 00:51:23.38\00:51:26.45 They should visit every family in the neighborhood 00:51:26.48\00:51:29.38 and know their spiritual condition. " 00:51:29.42\00:51:31.35 In our world today, 00:51:31.39\00:51:32.72 we shut our blinds... 00:51:32.75\00:51:34.09 we... we stay in our homes 00:51:34.12\00:51:35.99 and we're unaware... 00:51:36.02\00:51:37.36 some of the needs right there nearby us 00:51:37.39\00:51:39.49 but I would encourage you to begin by... 00:51:39.53\00:51:41.66 by looking around and saying, 00:51:41.70\00:51:43.03 "I'm going to at least start praying for him... 00:51:43.06\00:51:44.90 I may not know his name 00:51:44.93\00:51:46.27 but I'm going to pray for the man with the red car. 00:51:46.30\00:51:48.57 I'm going to pray for the grumpy person who walks the dog 00:51:48.60\00:51:51.77 and doesn't like children. " 00:51:51.81\00:51:53.17 And you put those names on your prayer list 00:51:53.21\00:51:55.84 and say, "Lord, help me to understand their needs 00:51:55.88\00:51:58.51 and begin to then have the desire and willingness 00:51:58.55\00:52:01.25 to reach out to them and talk to them. " 00:52:01.28\00:52:03.18 Maybe you're saying to yourself, 00:52:03.22\00:52:05.32 "I'm the poor and the needy, 00:52:05.35\00:52:07.36 I... I don't have much to share 00:52:07.39\00:52:09.49 with people who are in the same situation as I am. " 00:52:09.52\00:52:12.26 And in most situations, 00:52:12.29\00:52:13.63 those with limited resources, I found, 00:52:13.70\00:52:15.63 are really are quick to share 00:52:15.66\00:52:17.10 with those who share their situation. 00:52:17.13\00:52:19.00 And Jesus comes to share the lot of the poor. 00:52:19.03\00:52:22.14 He who was rich became poor for us. 00:52:22.17\00:52:26.14 So, caring for those who are less fortunate, 00:52:26.17\00:52:29.68 is more than just money. 00:52:29.71\00:52:31.28 It's saying, "Lord, put upon my heart 00:52:31.31\00:52:33.42 the needs of the others. 00:52:33.45\00:52:34.78 Help me to become aware of the needs around me 00:52:34.82\00:52:36.79 so that I can begin by praying for them. " 00:52:36.82\00:52:39.12 And maybe sharing an encouraging word 00:52:39.15\00:52:41.16 or pointing others to the resources 00:52:41.19\00:52:43.16 that I have found 00:52:43.19\00:52:44.53 that have been useful and helpful to me. 00:52:44.56\00:52:45.89 In all of this, 00:52:45.93\00:52:47.60 we should keep in mind Romans chapter 13. 00:52:47.63\00:52:51.43 I love verse 8 of Romans 13. 00:52:51.47\00:52:53.77 It says, "Owe nothing to anyone. " 00:52:53.80\00:52:57.21 All right, and I know in a previous Lesson, 00:52:57.27\00:52:59.91 we talked about staying out of debt 00:52:59.97\00:53:01.81 and so, Paul confirms that here. 00:53:01.84\00:53:03.51 He says, "Owe nothing to anyone, 00:53:03.55\00:53:05.85 except to love one another. " 00:53:05.88\00:53:08.08 Now, when we think about finances, 00:53:08.12\00:53:10.65 we think about business. 00:53:10.69\00:53:12.42 We want to be in the black. 00:53:12.45\00:53:14.09 We don't want our accounts to plunge below zero 00:53:14.12\00:53:17.13 and to be in debt 00:53:17.16\00:53:18.49 and... a... a... 00:53:18.53\00:53:19.86 but when we think about our spiritual life, 00:53:19.89\00:53:21.83 God says to us, 00:53:21.86\00:53:23.20 "I want you to recognize 00:53:23.23\00:53:24.57 that you're always living in the red... 00:53:24.60\00:53:26.57 that you always have a debt that you cannot pay. " 00:53:26.60\00:53:30.07 Based upon the priceless gift 00:53:30.11\00:53:32.11 that God has paid for you, 00:53:32.14\00:53:34.14 you need to then pay it back 00:53:34.18\00:53:36.11 but recognize you can never pay it back. 00:53:36.14\00:53:37.98 And we begin to pay it back by looking around us 00:53:38.01\00:53:40.68 and saying, "Lord, are there those around me 00:53:40.72\00:53:43.32 who are also in need?" 00:53:43.35\00:53:44.85 I should not ever get to the point where I say, 00:53:44.89\00:53:47.49 "I'm even with God... 00:53:47.52\00:53:48.99 I've... I've given my amount... 00:53:49.02\00:53:51.59 that... that equals His sacrifice to me. " 00:53:51.63\00:53:54.50 Listen to what Paul says in Romans 1:14, 00:53:54.53\00:53:57.73 he says, "I am a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians, 00:53:57.77\00:54:01.90 to the wise and the unwise. " 00:54:01.94\00:54:04.57 Look at what God's given to me and I know it 00:54:04.61\00:54:07.18 and there are those out there who don't know it. 00:54:07.21\00:54:09.74 It's not just their physical needs that need to be met 00:54:09.78\00:54:12.55 but their spiritual needs... 00:54:12.61\00:54:13.98 those suffering and as we meet the... 00:54:14.02\00:54:16.12 the physical needs, it gives us opportunity to say, 00:54:16.15\00:54:18.75 "Let me share with you what God has done for me, 00:54:18.79\00:54:21.36 the gifts that He's given to me... " 00:54:21.39\00:54:23.19 and so, Paul then tell us, 00:54:23.22\00:54:24.73 "I want to go to a place 00:54:24.76\00:54:26.23 where no one's ever talked about Jesus before. " 00:54:26.26\00:54:28.63 And so, we learn that he wants to go on to Spain... 00:54:28.66\00:54:31.00 a place where nobody had ever been 00:54:31.03\00:54:32.83 to share the good news of Jesus. 00:54:32.87\00:54:34.60 A final point as we consider the man, Job. 00:54:34.64\00:54:38.04 Take you to Job chapter 22 verse 6 and 7, 00:54:38.07\00:54:41.41 and we're listening to Eliphaz one of his friends. 00:54:41.44\00:54:44.51 Listen to what he says in verse 6 and 7, 00:54:44.55\00:54:46.98 "For you... " he's talking to Job now, 00:54:47.02\00:54:49.38 "For you have taken pledges from your brother for no reason, 00:54:49.42\00:54:53.15 and stripped the naked of their clothing. 00:54:53.19\00:54:56.02 You have not given the weary water to drink; 00:54:56.06\00:54:58.86 and you have withheld bread from the hungry. " 00:54:58.89\00:55:01.93 We've already heard God's testimony about Job 00:55:01.96\00:55:04.90 and maybe sometime in the past, Job had... had been like that 00:55:04.93\00:55:08.10 and his character had changed. 00:55:08.14\00:55:09.84 But I want you to notice here 00:55:09.87\00:55:11.51 that when we give and share with others, 00:55:11.54\00:55:13.81 it may not get a response... 00:55:13.84\00:55:16.11 a human response here on the earth. 00:55:16.14\00:55:18.01 In fact, people might not even witness it, 00:55:18.05\00:55:20.75 notice it and it might be misrepresented. 00:55:20.78\00:55:23.45 But God knows the heart 00:55:23.49\00:55:25.05 and we don't serve and we don't give for the accolades 00:55:25.09\00:55:28.09 and the applause of others, 00:55:28.12\00:55:29.46 we simply do it because of what God prompts us to do 00:55:29.49\00:55:32.73 because of what He's done for us. 00:55:32.76\00:55:34.83 Jill: Amen, thank you so much. 00:55:34.86\00:55:36.87 What an incredible study Daniel... each one of you, 00:55:36.90\00:55:39.10 Brother Johnny and Pastor John and Ryan, 00:55:39.13\00:55:41.34 thank you for your study of the Word of God. 00:55:41.37\00:55:43.54 You have blessed my heart today. 00:55:43.57\00:55:45.21 Want to give you an opportunity for closing thoughts. 00:55:45.24\00:55:47.81 Ryan: Absolutely, you know simply it all comes down to 00:55:47.84\00:55:50.35 Philippians 2 verse 5 for me. 00:55:50.41\00:55:52.45 "Let this mind be in you, 00:55:52.48\00:55:54.48 which was also in Christ Jesus. " 00:55:54.52\00:55:56.55 Jesus had compassion on those who... who were in need 00:55:56.58\00:55:59.85 and even had compassion on those 00:55:59.89\00:56:01.79 who were, maybe, physically or... 00:56:01.82\00:56:03.73 or carnally or worldly rich 00:56:03.76\00:56:05.49 but were spiritually lost. 00:56:05.53\00:56:07.20 We should also share 00:56:07.23\00:56:08.56 in that compassionate heart of Jesus Christ. 00:56:08.60\00:56:11.17 Lomacang: You may miss your greatest opportunity 00:56:11.20\00:56:13.90 for eternal life 00:56:13.94\00:56:15.27 if you think that your possessions can contribute 00:56:15.30\00:56:18.01 in the least to giving you eternal life. 00:56:18.04\00:56:20.68 Be willing to let go of what possesses you 00:56:20.71\00:56:23.31 so that Christ can possess you. 00:56:23.35\00:56:25.51 Jill: Amen. Dinzey: Thank you so much. 00:56:25.55\00:56:27.05 Ezekiel chapter 33:15 says, 00:56:27.08\00:56:29.58 "If the wicked restore the pledge, 00:56:29.62\00:56:31.52 give again that he had robbed, 00:56:31.55\00:56:33.39 walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; 00:56:33.42\00:56:36.52 he shall surely live, he shall not die. " 00:56:36.56\00:56:38.86 We see Zacchaeus... not only was willing to give one, 00:56:38.89\00:56:42.60 he was willing to give fourfold. 00:56:42.63\00:56:43.97 This is evidence of genuine repentance, praise the Lord. 00:56:44.00\00:56:47.07 Opportunity for all is there in Jesus. 00:56:47.10\00:56:49.40 Jill: Amen. Perrin: Thank you. 00:56:49.44\00:56:51.47 When we consider the man Job, 00:56:51.51\00:56:53.27 we remember that he was simply wearing the character of Christ. 00:56:53.31\00:56:57.55 He didn't seek out the needy because of his goodness 00:56:57.58\00:57:01.48 but because of God's goodness. 00:57:01.52\00:57:02.95 And so, when we consider the man Job, 00:57:02.98\00:57:05.19 he points us to consider the Son of Man 00:57:05.22\00:57:07.96 who came to seek and to save the lost 00:57:07.99\00:57:10.69 and that's where we should look. 00:57:10.73\00:57:12.46 Jill: Amen, thank you all so much. 00:57:12.49\00:57:14.40 Just so grateful for this opportunity 00:57:14.46\00:57:16.26 this time we had to study together 00:57:16.33\00:57:18.07 and we love sharing this time with you at home. 00:57:18.13\00:57:20.84 You are a part of the 3ABN family. 00:57:20.90\00:57:23.10 Whether the Lord has blessed you with much 00:57:23.14\00:57:25.27 and He's asking you share that with others... 00:57:25.34\00:57:27.44 or whether you don't have so much 00:57:27.48\00:57:29.78 and the Lord is going to bring someone to your doorstep 00:57:29.81\00:57:32.65 to help move that forward. 00:57:32.68\00:57:34.55 Know that we love you and we pray for you. 00:57:34.58\00:57:36.08 I want to leave you with this verse, 00:57:36.12\00:57:37.65 this is Hebrews 13:16, 00:57:37.69\00:57:39.65 "Do not forget to do good and to share 00:57:39.69\00:57:43.86 for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. " 00:57:43.89\00:57:48.86 What a blessing to submit our lives to God 00:57:48.90\00:57:51.80 and to then share with those who are in need. 00:57:51.83\00:57:54.64 Join us next week... 00:57:54.67\00:57:56.00 Lesson Number 8: Planning for Success. 00:57:56.04\00:57:58.87
