" 00:01:39.19\00:01:40.60 James: Okay... and Jill Morikone, 00:01:40.63\00:01:42.93 glad you're with us today. 00:01:42.96\00:01:44.30 Jill: Thank you, Pastor James. 00:01:44.33\00:01:45.67 I have Genesis chapter 39 which is Joseph in Egypt. 00:01:45.70\00:01:48.10 James: Okay and then last, Pastor John Lomacang. 00:01:48.14\00:01:51.97 Lomacang: The dream of Pharaoh. 00:01:52.01\00:01:54.14 You know, everybody has a dream including Pharaoh. 00:01:54.18\00:01:57.01 Panel: That's right... laughter. 00:01:57.05\00:01:58.55 James: So, we've got some good stuff 00:01:58.58\00:02:00.02 that we're going to be covering today. 00:02:00.05\00:02:01.45 Before we get started, 00:02:01.48\00:02:03.05 we want to ask for the Holy Spirit to be with us 00:02:03.08\00:02:05.05 in prayer... so Pastor John, would you pray for us, please? 00:02:05.09\00:02:07.62 Lomacang: Sure... "Loving Father in heaven, 00:02:07.66\00:02:09.79 we are always humbled when we open the Bible 00:02:09.82\00:02:11.89 to recognize that it is a book 00:02:11.93\00:02:14.33 we can never completely comprehend 00:02:14.36\00:02:16.87 but with your Spirit's guidance today, 00:02:16.90\00:02:19.33 Father, reveal to us those things 00:02:19.37\00:02:20.94 which we must share in the glory of Your own character. 00:02:20.97\00:02:24.97 Give us wisdom and understanding 00:02:25.01\00:02:26.64 and may the end result be all the honor and glory go to You. 00:02:26.68\00:02:29.44 We ask in Jesus' name, amen. " 00:02:29.48\00:02:31.05 Panel: Amen... amen. 00:02:31.08\00:02:33.31 James: So, our memory lesson this morning 00:02:33.35\00:02:35.75 is found in Genesis chapter 37. 00:02:35.78\00:02:38.19 We're going to be covering chapters 37 00:02:38.22\00:02:39.82 and 38... 39 and 40. 00:02:39.85\00:02:42.12 In Genesis chapter 37 verse 19, which says, 00:02:42.16\00:02:45.66 "Then they said to one another, 00:02:45.69\00:02:48.86 'Look, this dreamer is coming!'" 00:02:48.90\00:02:51.37 This is Joseph's brothers 00:02:51.40\00:02:52.73 talking about Joseph the dreamer of dreams. 00:02:52.77\00:02:55.10 He's about 17 years old 00:02:55.14\00:02:56.77 when his brothers are becoming acquainted with the fact that 00:02:56.81\00:03:00.61 he's having these dreams 00:03:00.64\00:03:01.98 and they're not happy about these dreams. 00:03:02.01\00:03:03.91 So, this story, basically, of Joseph 00:03:03.95\00:03:06.25 is covering the last section of the book 00:03:06.28\00:03:08.52 and it occupies more space than any other patriarch 00:03:08.55\00:03:12.32 or character in the book of Genesis. 00:03:12.35\00:03:14.59 Although Joseph was just one of Jacob's sons, 00:03:14.62\00:03:18.29 he's presented in Genesis 00:03:18.33\00:03:19.66 kind of like a great patriarch, if you will... 00:03:19.69\00:03:22.10 like... like Isaac and Jacob. 00:03:22.13\00:03:25.17 So, we see here too that the life of Joseph 00:03:25.23\00:03:28.90 highlights two important theological truths. 00:03:28.94\00:03:32.14 First of all, that God fulfills His promises. 00:03:32.17\00:03:35.04 Panel: Amen. James: I love that. 00:03:35.08\00:03:36.51 God fulfills His promises 00:03:36.54\00:03:37.88 and second... that God can turn evil into good. 00:03:37.91\00:03:42.35 Panel: Amen... amen. 00:03:42.38\00:03:43.72 James: And we really need to understand that 00:03:43.79\00:03:45.29 because there's so much evil in the world today 00:03:45.32\00:03:46.79 and yet God can overrule it with good. 00:03:46.82\00:03:48.66 Panel: Yes... James: So, this week's study, 00:03:48.72\00:03:51.39 we're going to focus on the early life of Joseph. 00:03:51.43\00:03:53.93 He is Jacob's favorite son... not his first son... 00:03:53.96\00:03:56.46 Reuben was his first son 00:03:56.50\00:03:57.83 but he is Jacob's favorite son who is ironically nicknamed: 00:03:57.87\00:04:01.37 The Dreamer 00:04:01.40\00:04:02.74 according to Genesis 37 verse 19... 00:04:02.77\00:04:04.84 which means literally: The Master of Dreams. 00:04:04.87\00:04:08.31 That's the literal Greek meaning of the word 00:04:08.34\00:04:11.25 implying that he is an expert of dreams 00:04:11.28\00:04:13.68 and this title fits him really well 00:04:13.72\00:04:16.08 because as we find out, 00:04:16.12\00:04:17.75 he not only receives and understands 00:04:17.79\00:04:20.42 and interprets prophetic dreams 00:04:20.46\00:04:21.79 but he also fulfills them in his life. 00:04:21.82\00:04:23.89 so, he receives them... he interprets them 00:04:23.93\00:04:25.99 and he is actually the fulfillment 00:04:26.03\00:04:27.60 of many of these dreams. 00:04:27.63\00:04:28.96 So, in these chapters, we're going to see again 00:04:29.00\00:04:31.10 that God's providence is affirmed... 00:04:31.13\00:04:32.83 that what God predicts, actually comes to pass 00:04:32.87\00:04:35.37 despite the evil... 00:04:35.40\00:04:36.74 despite the wickedness of the human heart. 00:04:36.77\00:04:38.47 Reminds me of the book of Daniel in a sense... 00:04:38.51\00:04:40.24 you know, Daniel had these dreams 00:04:40.28\00:04:41.74 and then he was part of the fulfillment of these dreams 00:04:41.78\00:04:44.45 and, of course, the word we get from the book of Daniel 00:04:44.51\00:04:47.15 is that interpretation is... is sure... 00:04:47.18\00:04:49.58 the prophecy is sure and certain 00:04:49.62\00:04:51.39 and I love that about the Word of God... 00:04:51.42\00:04:53.42 that the Word of God is sure and certain... 00:04:53.46\00:04:55.32 it's something that we can really depend on 00:04:55.36\00:04:57.23 in these last days. 00:04:57.26\00:04:58.59 Okay, let's go to Sunday's lesson: 00:04:58.63\00:04:59.96 Family Troubles is the title of Sunday's lesson. 00:05:00.00\00:05:02.43 Jacob has, at last, settled in the land. 00:05:02.46\00:05:05.20 And while Isaac was only "a stranger," 00:05:05.23\00:05:07.90 the text also says that Jacob "dwelt in the land... " 00:05:07.94\00:05:12.27 and that's Genesis chapter 37 verse 1. 00:05:12.34\00:05:14.68 Yet, it was then, as he was settling into the land, 00:05:14.74\00:05:17.85 that the troubles actually began... 00:05:17.88\00:05:19.21 and these troubles were family troubles. 00:05:19.25\00:05:21.08 They weren't troubles from outside 00:05:21.12\00:05:22.82 as some of the previous chapters reveal, 00:05:22.85\00:05:24.59 they were troubles from inside. 00:05:24.62\00:05:26.22 The controversy doesn't concern the possession of the land 00:05:26.25\00:05:29.29 as in the past 00:05:29.32\00:05:30.66 but well, mainly, the spiritual battles that are taking place 00:05:30.69\00:05:34.73 within the family dynamic 00:05:34.76\00:05:36.40 and who doesn't relate to that? Panel: Yeah. 00:05:36.43\00:05:38.10 James: Right. Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:05:38.13\00:05:39.47 So, let's start in Genesis chapter 37 verse 1, 00:05:39.50\00:05:41.30 "Jacob dwelt in the land where his father was a stranger, 00:05:41.34\00:05:44.14 in the land of Canaan. " 00:05:44.17\00:05:45.51 Verse 2, "These are the generations of Jacob. 00:05:45.54\00:05:47.91 Joseph, being seventeen years old. " 00:05:47.94\00:05:50.88 Let's just stop there for a second. 00:05:50.91\00:05:52.35 Do you remember when you were 17 years old? 00:05:52.38\00:05:54.12 Jill: I do. Panel: Laughter. 00:05:54.15\00:05:55.68 James: I remember when I was 17 years old... 00:05:55.72\00:05:58.32 17 years old was a big deal... 00:05:58.35\00:05:59.69 I mean 16... Driver's License... 00:05:59.72\00:06:01.06 17... you're moving into adulthood, right? 00:06:01.09\00:06:03.56 You're almost 18... you're almost free so to speak. 00:06:03.59\00:06:06.70 17 years old... 00:06:06.73\00:06:08.06 so, this is a time in Joseph's life 00:06:08.10\00:06:11.43 when some remarkable things are going to happen to him. 00:06:11.47\00:06:14.30 He's going to experience some things 00:06:14.37\00:06:15.70 but you know, when I was 17, I thought I knew a lot 00:06:15.74\00:06:18.51 and I really didn't know that much. 00:06:18.54\00:06:20.94 And it might be... 00:06:20.98\00:06:22.61 this might play into the story here a little bit 00:06:22.64\00:06:24.75 with Joseph, right... 00:06:24.81\00:06:26.21 he's still a young man... he's still a kid. 00:06:26.25\00:06:28.82 He's out feeding the flock with his brethren 00:06:28.88\00:06:30.59 and the lad... okay... the Bible says, 00:06:30.62\00:06:33.62 "The lad was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, 00:06:33.66\00:06:37.46 his father's wives; 00:06:37.49\00:06:38.93 and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report. " 00:06:38.96\00:06:43.06 So, maybe he's a little bit too young to know better 00:06:43.10\00:06:46.67 than to go snitch into the Dad, right, so to speak, 00:06:46.70\00:06:50.27 and now, Israel, verse 3 says, 00:06:50.31\00:06:53.11 "loved Joseph more than his other children, 00:06:53.14\00:06:55.08 because he was the son of his old age. 00:06:55.11\00:06:57.15 And he made him a coat of many colors. 00:06:57.18\00:06:59.58 Verse 4, here it comes... 00:06:59.61\00:07:02.28 "and when his brethren saw 00:07:02.32\00:07:04.15 that their father loved him more than all his brethren, 00:07:04.19\00:07:07.59 they hated him and could not speak peaceably unto him. " 00:07:07.62\00:07:13.29 Now, think about that. 00:07:13.33\00:07:14.66 They hated him but they couldn't speak peaceably unto him. 00:07:14.70\00:07:17.13 They couldn't speak nicely to him. 00:07:17.17\00:07:18.67 They were always... 00:07:18.70\00:07:20.04 the opposite of peace is... what? 00:07:20.07\00:07:22.20 There's going to be some anger there... 00:07:22.27\00:07:24.47 there's going to be some strife there... 00:07:24.51\00:07:26.68 there's going to be... they're always speaking words 00:07:26.71\00:07:28.64 that are kind of going to try to push his button... 00:07:28.68\00:07:30.01 push his button, push his button... 00:07:30.05\00:07:31.38 that's what they're trying to do. 00:07:31.41\00:07:32.75 So, those words come to us when people don't like us. 00:07:32.78\00:07:37.62 People hate us... his brothers hated him 00:07:37.65\00:07:39.79 and so these words are coming in that are... 00:07:39.82\00:07:41.92 they're trying to push his buttons 00:07:41.96\00:07:43.63 and it says, going on... 00:07:43.66\00:07:45.56 we're not finished with this... with this hate thing yet 00:07:45.59\00:07:48.16 because it says in verse 5 that Joseph dreamed a dream... 00:07:48.23\00:07:50.57 and he told it to his brethren and they hated him yet more. 00:07:50.60\00:07:52.93 Panel: Laughter. 00:07:52.97\00:07:54.57 James: It just gets worse right? Panel: Yeah... yeah. 00:07:54.60\00:07:55.94 James: You've got this hatred coming 00:07:55.97\00:07:57.47 because his dad loves him more than the others... 00:07:57.51\00:08:00.08 because he's a snitch or he's, you know, being... 00:08:00.11\00:08:02.68 you know, actually, he's being honest right? 00:08:02.71\00:08:04.68 He's being honest with his Dad... 00:08:04.71\00:08:06.05 he's talking to his Dad about what the brothers are doing, 00:08:06.08\00:08:08.05 so, he's kind of bringing a report... it's an evil report... 00:08:08.08\00:08:10.12 but that's not his fault... it's the brothers' fault. 00:08:10.15\00:08:12.35 But, of course, when you're in that kind of a situation, 00:08:12.39\00:08:14.56 then you add to the fact that Joseph favors him 00:08:14.59\00:08:16.69 and then you add to the fact that he's having these dreams 00:08:16.73\00:08:18.63 and you add to the fact 00:08:18.66\00:08:20.00 that he's got this coat of many colors, 00:08:20.03\00:08:21.36 things are just building... things are mounting here 00:08:21.40\00:08:24.03 and so, he goes on in verse 6 it says, 00:08:24.07\00:08:26.53 "And he said unto them, Hear ye, I pray you, 00:08:26.57\00:08:28.54 this dream which I have dreamed... " 00:08:28.57\00:08:31.27 Now, you know he's 17 because, you know, 00:08:31.31\00:08:33.68 as you get older, you start picking up... 00:08:33.71\00:08:35.74 you start sensing some of these things... 00:08:35.78\00:08:37.51 you know what I'm saying? 00:08:37.55\00:08:38.88 Joseph's just acting like, you know, 00:08:38.91\00:08:41.08 "Hey, you got to hear the dream I dreamed. " 00:08:41.12\00:08:42.72 They don't even want to know that he had the dream, right? 00:08:42.75\00:08:45.42 "You got to hear this dream that I dreamed... 00:08:45.45\00:08:46.96 it's all about how you're going to bow down to me... 00:08:46.99\00:08:51.36 I'm going to be the leader here, you know... " 00:08:51.39\00:08:53.13 I was like, "Joseph... " I mean... the guy is just... 00:08:53.16\00:08:56.10 in a sense, he's just innocent and honest... 00:08:56.13\00:08:59.17 straightforward... 00:08:59.20\00:09:00.54 "Dad, I can't believe these guys are out in the field 00:09:00.57\00:09:02.50 and they killed this lamb and they're eating it. " 00:09:02.54\00:09:04.61 And... and... and... and... 00:09:04.64\00:09:06.47 and... "Hey, look... look at this dream that God gave me 00:09:06.51\00:09:08.71 and check this... 00:09:08.74\00:09:10.15 oh, look at this new coat that Dad gave me. " 00:09:10.18\00:09:11.58 And he... and the brothers were just there... you know, 00:09:11.61\00:09:14.45 the older brothers are just thinking, 00:09:14.48\00:09:15.82 you know, they're thinking all kinds of hate. 00:09:15.85\00:09:18.42 And he's just kind of going along, you know, I mean 00:09:18.45\00:09:21.32 by the time we get to the end of the story, 00:09:21.36\00:09:23.93 Joseph is just shocked... awake... 00:09:23.96\00:09:26.46 right... he wakes up in the shock 00:09:26.49\00:09:28.56 of the evil that comes upon him 00:09:28.63\00:09:30.57 and I think, sometimes, in this world, Friends, 00:09:30.60\00:09:33.00 you know, we... we talk about 00:09:33.03\00:09:35.30 you know, the young and the innocent 00:09:35.34\00:09:36.77 and truly, you know, 00:09:36.91\00:09:38.24 our kids are many times young and innocent 00:09:38.27\00:09:40.08 and then, all of a sudden, 00:09:40.11\00:09:41.64 the cruelty and the evil of this world 00:09:41.71\00:09:43.28 just wakes them up... it wakes us up. 00:09:43.35\00:09:44.85 I still remember when I made that transition, you know, 00:09:44.88\00:09:47.02 from the young and the innocent, 00:09:47.05\00:09:48.38 to a realization of how evil and wicked this world was 00:09:48.42\00:09:52.29 and it changes you... it hardens you... 00:09:52.32\00:09:55.09 you lose that innocence... that youthful innocence 00:09:55.12\00:09:58.13 and you grow and... 00:09:58.16\00:09:59.86 and hopefully, you can mature, 00:09:59.89\00:10:01.60 you know, we've got a choice at that point 00:10:01.66\00:10:03.20 where we get to become like the evil that has impacted us 00:10:03.23\00:10:05.57 or we're going to mature in a different direction. 00:10:05.63\00:10:07.74 And so, the story goes on here. 00:10:07.77\00:10:09.67 It's actually... 00:10:09.70\00:10:11.04 it gets a little bit worse before it gets better... 00:10:11.07\00:10:12.41 so... "Behold we binding sheaves in the field... " 00:10:12.44\00:10:13.78 he said, "and, lo my sheaf arose, 00:10:13.81\00:10:15.31 and stood upright; 00:10:15.34\00:10:16.85 and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, 00:10:16.88\00:10:18.35 and made obeisance to my sheaf. 00:10:18.38\00:10:20.35 They bowed down to my sheaf. " 00:10:20.38\00:10:21.72 And verse 8, "And his brethren said to him, 00:10:21.75\00:10:23.72 'Shalt thou indeed reign over us? 00:10:23.75\00:10:25.89 or shall you indeed have dominion over us?' 00:10:25.92\00:10:29.39 And they hated him yet the more... " 00:10:29.42\00:10:32.76 Panel: Hmmm... 00:10:32.79\00:10:34.36 James: There was more room for hate. 00:10:34.40\00:10:35.73 Panel: Hmmm... yeah... 00:10:35.76\00:10:37.10 James: You know, this is one of the things 00:10:37.13\00:10:38.47 that this chapter brings out quite clearly and that is, 00:10:38.50\00:10:40.50 hate has no boundaries. 00:10:40.54\00:10:43.17 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:10:43.20\00:10:45.84 James: You can have a little bit of hate 00:10:45.87\00:10:47.21 and a little bit more hate... 00:10:47.24\00:10:48.58 and a little bit more hate on top of that... 00:10:48.61\00:10:50.01 and the devil will always put more hate into you. 00:10:50.05\00:10:53.68 He's always going to stuff it in there... 00:10:53.72\00:10:55.18 he's going to push it in there and so... 00:10:55.25\00:10:57.82 they hated him because he was a snitch... 00:10:57.85\00:11:00.16 because he was telling... 00:11:00.22\00:11:01.56 they hated him because his father loved him... 00:11:01.59\00:11:03.26 they hated him because he had this jacket... 00:11:03.29\00:11:05.03 they hated him even more because he had this dream 00:11:05.06\00:11:06.39 and they hated him more 00:11:06.43\00:11:07.76 when he told them about the dreams. 00:11:07.80\00:11:09.13 Hate just continues to build. 00:11:09.16\00:11:10.50 You've got to get off the hate cycle, 00:11:10.53\00:11:11.87 we need to get off the hate cycle. 00:11:11.90\00:11:13.34 We need to just jump that hate train 00:11:13.40\00:11:15.07 and let God take all that hate away from us 00:11:15.10\00:11:17.54 so that He can replace it with His love and with His grace. 00:11:17.57\00:11:20.98 "And he dreamed yet another dream, 00:11:21.01\00:11:22.84 and he told it to his brethren... " 00:11:22.88\00:11:24.71 ah...! Sometimes I'm thinking, 00:11:24.75\00:11:26.38 "What? Joseph, what you're doing here?" right? 00:11:26.41\00:11:29.05 Panel: Laughing. 00:11:29.08\00:11:30.62 James: "Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; 00:11:30.65\00:11:32.02 and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars 00:11:32.05\00:11:33.76 made obeisance to me. " 00:11:33.79\00:11:35.16 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: 00:11:35.19\00:11:37.06 and his father rebuked him, and his father said unto him, 00:11:37.09\00:11:40.20 "What is this dream that thou has dreamed? 00:11:40.23\00:11:41.93 Shall I and thy mother and they brethren 00:11:41.96\00:11:44.10 indeed come and bow down ourselves to thee 00:11:44.13\00:11:46.23 to the earth?" 00:11:46.27\00:11:47.60 There's symbolism here that the woman in Revelation 12 00:11:47.64\00:11:50.14 is... is clothed with the sun and the moon and the stars 00:11:50.17\00:11:52.71 that's a symbol of God's people. 00:11:52.77\00:11:54.14 "And his brethren not only hated him... now they envied him, 00:11:54.18\00:11:58.21 but his father... who had rebuked him... 00:11:58.25\00:12:01.72 observed the saying. " 00:12:01.75\00:12:03.08 That word "observed" means: he hedged about... 00:12:03.12\00:12:05.35 he guarded... he protected and he attended to the saying. 00:12:05.39\00:12:09.02 He was thinking about this... hmmm... 00:12:09.06\00:12:11.06 "there's something going on here with Joseph. 00:12:11.09\00:12:14.10 Not only do I favor him, 00:12:14.13\00:12:16.23 but it appears that God is favoring him also. " 00:12:16.26\00:12:19.63 You know, when you have the favor of God, 00:12:19.93\00:12:22.10 you're going to find yourself in a situation 00:12:22.17\00:12:24.27 where you're going to face an incredible amount of trials 00:12:24.31\00:12:28.04 and they're for a couple of reasons. 00:12:28.11\00:12:29.54 One reason is is because when God favors you, 00:12:29.58\00:12:31.71 and God favors all of us by the way... 00:12:31.78\00:12:33.72 that puts you as a target to the enemy... to the devil. 00:12:33.75\00:12:37.69 Right? But Number 2 is because God... when He favors you... 00:12:37.72\00:12:41.76 He wants to prepare you for the position... the responsibility 00:12:41.79\00:12:45.79 the work that He has for you to perform 00:12:45.83\00:12:48.13 and part of that preparation, of course, 00:12:48.16\00:12:50.40 is to learn how to be a servant. 00:12:50.43\00:12:52.17 Jesus Christ... we're Christians... 00:12:52.20\00:12:54.17 Jesus Christ is our great example 00:12:54.24\00:12:56.17 and He came to serve 00:12:56.20\00:12:57.97 and this is the lesson 00:12:58.01\00:12:59.77 that Joseph is going to be taught by God 00:12:59.81\00:13:01.81 and he's going to be taught this by becoming a slave... 00:13:01.84\00:13:04.01 he's going to be taught this 00:13:04.05\00:13:05.38 by going through some tremendous trials 00:13:05.41\00:13:06.92 and we're going to be talking about those 00:13:06.95\00:13:08.62 being in all of this... 00:13:08.65\00:13:10.15 all of this leads Joseph to put his trust more strongly 00:13:10.19\00:13:14.06 in the heavenly Father. 00:13:14.09\00:13:15.49 Panel: Amen. 00:13:15.52\00:13:16.86 James: Put his trust more strongly in God 00:13:16.89\00:13:18.56 so, it's going to be a great lesson as we go through this... 00:13:18.59\00:13:20.53 it's just begun... we just laid the foundation, 00:13:20.56\00:13:22.76 Pastor Ryan Day... take it... take it from there. 00:13:22.80\00:13:25.17 Ryan: Okay, you know, we were talking yesterday 00:13:25.20\00:13:27.47 and as we were mingling through these studies and... 00:13:27.54\00:13:30.97 and... and... chatting with each other 00:13:31.01\00:13:32.57 about the studies that we've been doing 00:13:32.81\00:13:34.48 and it's amazing... I'm... if... you know, so many people... 00:13:34.51\00:13:38.11 we live in a world where people love drama 00:13:38.18\00:13:40.85 and I can tell you... 00:13:40.88\00:13:42.22 all of these drama shows on television... 00:13:42.25\00:13:45.55 they got nothing on the Bible, I'm telling you... 00:13:45.59\00:13:47.12 even right here in Genesis... 00:13:47.16\00:13:48.49 there's just... it's so much full of drama 00:13:48.52\00:13:50.66 and... and... and... and excitement 00:13:50.69\00:13:52.76 and... and... and so much emotional... 00:13:52.79\00:13:54.40 it's like an emotional... 00:13:54.43\00:13:55.76 taking on an emotional roller coaster 00:13:55.80\00:13:57.13 and the story of Joseph does not fail in any sense 00:13:57.17\00:14:02.50 because when you get through this story about the end, 00:14:02.54\00:14:04.51 you just feel like, "Wow... 00:14:04.54\00:14:05.87 it's amazing to see what this young man went through. " 00:14:05.91\00:14:08.64 But I have Monday's Lesson... my name is Ryan Day... 00:14:08.68\00:14:11.45 I have Monday's Lesson which is entitled: 00:14:11.48\00:14:13.21 The Attack on Joseph. 00:14:13.25\00:14:14.78 So, basically what Pastor James just shared on how 00:14:14.82\00:14:17.92 we see this... this envy... this hate... 00:14:17.95\00:14:20.29 this hatred building, building, building, building, 00:14:20.32\00:14:22.42 from Joseph's brothers and now... 00:14:22.46\00:14:24.46 they're about to take action 00:14:24.49\00:14:26.76 because their hatred and their jealousy 00:14:26.80\00:14:29.30 and just all of that passion in a negative sense 00:14:29.33\00:14:32.40 that's building up in their heart towards him... 00:14:32.43\00:14:35.44 it... it explodes and so, here we go, Genesis chapter 37, 00:14:35.47\00:14:39.77 I'm going to start with verse 12 and the Bible says, 00:14:39.81\00:14:43.08 "Then his brothers went to feed their father's flock in Shechem. 00:14:43.11\00:14:47.02 And Israel said to Joseph, 00:14:47.05\00:14:48.98 'Are not your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? 00:14:49.02\00:14:51.42 Come, and I will send you to them. ' 00:14:51.45\00:14:54.12 And he said to him, 'Here I am. ' 00:14:54.16\00:14:56.59 And he said to him, 00:14:56.62\00:14:57.99 'Please go and see if it is well with your brothers 00:14:58.03\00:15:00.63 and well with the flocks, and bring back word to me. ' 00:15:00.66\00:15:03.83 So he sent him out of the Valley of Hebron, 00:15:03.87\00:15:06.70 and he went to Shechem. " 00:15:06.74\00:15:08.07 Now... me... I kind of see things 00:15:08.10\00:15:09.80 in a little bit different light sometimes, 00:15:09.84\00:15:11.91 I... I kind of try to look at both sides here 00:15:11.94\00:15:13.98 and put myself in Joseph's shoes... 00:15:14.01\00:15:15.64 put myself in the brothers' shoes... 00:15:15.68\00:15:17.25 and, you know, there has to be 00:15:17.28\00:15:19.01 you only have to go off what the text says, 00:15:19.05\00:15:21.38 we have to... we have to only go off what the text says, 00:15:21.42\00:15:23.55 but I have to imagine 00:15:23.59\00:15:24.92 that this isn't something that Jacob is completely oblivious to 00:15:24.95\00:15:28.22 right, he's seen the tension that's building between Joseph 00:15:28.26\00:15:30.93 and his brothers... 00:15:30.96\00:15:32.29 he's seeing the actions and somehow... 00:15:32.33\00:15:34.20 you know, sometimes how Joseph even in his innocence 00:15:34.23\00:15:36.83 can probably come across... maybe a little bit, you know, 00:15:36.87\00:15:39.27 could use some humility... maybe a little bit of arrogance 00:15:39.30\00:15:41.64 maybe boasting sometimes... 00:15:41.70\00:15:43.04 you know, from the brothers' perspective... 00:15:43.07\00:15:44.87 and they're looking at this going, "Look at this little... 00:15:44.91\00:15:46.84 look at this little... this... this... this... this kid 00:15:46.88\00:15:49.84 who just stays in the tents all day 00:15:49.88\00:15:52.35 and, you know, we're out here working hard 00:15:52.38\00:15:54.15 and he's just in the tent in the cool... 00:15:54.18\00:15:56.15 dreaming his little dreams... " 00:15:56.18\00:15:57.85 and so, their jealousy just builds, builds, builds... 00:15:57.89\00:16:00.22 you can imagine, as a father, I'm surprised Jacob 00:16:00.26\00:16:02.72 he could... it could have clicked with him to say, 00:16:02.76\00:16:04.76 "Maybe I should probably go with him... 00:16:04.79\00:16:06.16 maybe I probably shouldn't send him by himself 00:16:06.19\00:16:07.76 because the brothers have been 00:16:07.80\00:16:09.13 you know, they've been angry with him... " 00:16:09.16\00:16:10.50 and so, you know, I was just thinking of... 00:16:10.53\00:16:12.00 you know, we have to understand that 00:16:12.03\00:16:13.37 even though the Bible says nothing negative 00:16:13.40\00:16:14.94 as far as flaws towards the character of Joseph 00:16:14.97\00:16:17.64 because he was a righteous man 00:16:17.67\00:16:19.01 and I believe in his youthful innocence, 00:16:19.04\00:16:20.88 he was doing all that he thought was right 00:16:20.91\00:16:22.81 but sometimes, that can come across in his innocence... 00:16:22.84\00:16:25.68 to some people, you know, 00:16:25.71\00:16:27.45 when you try to take, you know, darkness and put it with... 00:16:27.48\00:16:29.48 what does the Bible say there? 00:16:29.52\00:16:30.85 I had a... I had a text for that... 00:16:30.89\00:16:32.25 2nd Corinthians chapter 6 verses 14 and 15, 00:16:32.29\00:16:34.06 "Do not unequally yoke yourself together with unbelievers. 00:16:34.09\00:16:37.23 For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? 00:16:37.26\00:16:39.49 And what communion has light with darkness? 00:16:39.53\00:16:41.40 And what accord has Christ with Belial? 00:16:41.43\00:16:44.17 Or what has a believer with an unbeliever? 00:16:44.20\00:16:47.20 What part does a believer have with an unbeliever?" 00:16:47.24\00:16:48.70 So, you can see... there's some strife here. 00:16:48.74\00:16:50.61 The two seeds, right... 00:16:50.64\00:16:52.37 the two seeds from Genesis 3:15 are present in this story. 00:16:52.41\00:16:55.61 The brothers... the seed of the serpent 00:16:55.64\00:16:57.35 and Joseph the seed of the woman. 00:16:57.48\00:16:59.61 And so, you know, 00:16:59.65\00:17:00.98 there's... there's some tension definitely building here. 00:17:01.02\00:17:03.39 And so, now we go on with the story in verse 15, 00:17:03.42\00:17:05.69 it says, "Now, a certain man found him, 00:17:05.72\00:17:08.36 and there he was, wandering in the field. 00:17:08.39\00:17:10.96 And the man asked him, saying, 'What are you seeking?' 00:17:10.99\00:17:14.16 And so he said, 'I am seeking my brothers. 00:17:14.20\00:17:16.70 Please tell me where they are feeding their flocks. ' 00:17:16.73\00:17:19.40 Then the man said, 'They have departed from here, 00:17:19.43\00:17:22.20 for I heard them say, 'Let us go to Dothan. ' 00:17:22.24\00:17:25.54 So Joseph went after his brothers 00:17:25.57\00:17:28.64 and found them in Dothan. " 00:17:28.68\00:17:30.01 They're not... they're not worried 00:17:30.05\00:17:31.41 the father expects them to be... they went somewhere else 00:17:31.45\00:17:34.08 and now, it's going to make matters even worse 00:17:34.12\00:17:36.08 because now here comes Joseph 00:17:36.12\00:17:37.45 off in the direction that they thought... 00:17:37.49\00:17:39.35 they were going to go to escape Joseph's drama... 00:17:39.42\00:17:41.42 and their father... 00:17:41.46\00:17:42.89 you know, they're already, I'm sure, 00:17:42.92\00:17:44.26 upset with their father because the Bible says, 00:17:44.29\00:17:45.93 "He favored him... " right, and that's not right. 00:17:45.99\00:17:47.70 Let's just be honest... it's not right 00:17:47.73\00:17:49.16 but the truth of the matter is he... 00:17:49.23\00:17:50.57 the Bible says, "He loved Joseph... 00:17:50.60\00:17:51.93 he... they perceived that he loved Joseph more than them 00:17:51.97\00:17:54.10 and so, they hated Joseph for that... 00:17:54.14\00:17:55.70 they were jealous 00:17:55.74\00:17:57.07 and so, now, here he comes to Dothan. 00:17:57.11\00:17:58.67 He... he's hunting them down 00:17:58.71\00:18:00.04 and so, now we see in verse 18 here, it says, 00:18:00.08\00:18:03.04 "Now when they saw him afar off... " 00:18:03.08\00:18:05.61 you could just imagine the things that were happening 00:18:05.65\00:18:07.92 in their minds... what they were talking about. 00:18:07.95\00:18:09.72 It says, "Even before he came near them, 00:18:09.75\00:18:12.15 they conspired against him to kill him. 00:18:12.19\00:18:14.56 Then they said to one another, 'Look, this dreamer is coming! 00:18:14.59\00:18:18.89 Come, therefore, now kill him and cast him into some pit; 00:18:18.93\00:18:22.96 and we shall say, 'Some wild beast has devoured him. ' 00:18:23.00\00:18:26.60 We shall see what will become of his dreams!" 00:18:26.63\00:18:31.57 So again, they're... they're already plotting 00:18:31.61\00:18:33.68 and, of course, let's just be honest, 00:18:33.71\00:18:35.04 what spirit is behind this? 00:18:35.08\00:18:36.41 Who's behind all of this planning... 00:18:36.44\00:18:37.78 this plotting to kill Joseph? 00:18:37.81\00:18:39.15 It's none other than the devil himself. 00:18:39.18\00:18:40.62 Because the devil understands... 00:18:40.65\00:18:42.15 he's still looking back from Genesis 3:15... 00:18:42.18\00:18:44.62 he's waiting for that seed to come 00:18:44.65\00:18:46.59 and Joseph looks like the prime person 00:18:46.62\00:18:48.46 that that seed's going to come through 00:18:48.49\00:18:49.89 so, the devil's like, "You know what? 00:18:49.92\00:18:51.29 I'm going to use the brothers... I'm just... sometimes... 00:18:51.33\00:18:53.26 can the devil sometimes use family against family? 00:18:53.29\00:18:56.30 Panel: Absolutely. 00:18:56.33\00:18:57.67 Ryan: I mean, the last people in the world 00:18:57.70\00:18:59.23 that some people expect to come against them, 00:18:59.27\00:19:00.70 you know, especially when a person is living for God, 00:19:00.74\00:19:04.01 or going to be, you know, righteous 00:19:04.04\00:19:05.51 and live the holiest life that they can, 00:19:05.57\00:19:07.04 you know, the devil will use them the most... 00:19:07.08\00:19:09.08 the people that you wouldn't think you'd use 00:19:09.11\00:19:10.85 and that's family... 00:19:10.88\00:19:12.21 in this case, Joseph is experiencing that 00:19:12.25\00:19:14.05 and so, "We shall see what shall become of his dreams!" 00:19:14.08\00:19:17.45 You can just sense and tell that... 00:19:17.49\00:19:19.49 you can see the hatred the... the... I mean it's... 00:19:19.52\00:19:21.92 I don't even know if "hate" is the right word either... 00:19:21.96\00:19:24.23 they despised him too... to the utmost. 00:19:24.26\00:19:27.06 And so, verse 21, it says, 00:19:27.10\00:19:28.96 "But Reuben heard it... " so, Reuben's the oldest... 00:19:29.00\00:19:30.97 Reuben... you know, he's... he's the eldest 00:19:31.03\00:19:33.34 but he's not in good favor with his father 00:19:33.37\00:19:35.64 right, for some of his past actions 00:19:35.67\00:19:37.74 "But Reuben heard it... " the Bible says 00:19:37.77\00:19:40.01 "and he delivered him out of their hands, 00:19:40.04\00:19:42.24 and said, 'Let us not kill him. ' 00:19:42.28\00:19:44.01 And Reuben said to them, "Shed no blood, 00:19:44.05\00:19:47.18 but cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness, 00:19:47.22\00:19:50.25 and do not lay a hand on him... ' 00:19:50.29\00:19:52.82 that he might deliver him out of their hands, 00:19:52.85\00:19:55.32 and bring him back to his father. " 00:19:55.36\00:19:56.99 So, notice here... this is quite interesting. 00:19:57.03\00:19:58.63 Sometimes, people skip over this... 00:19:58.66\00:20:00.06 Reuben has actually taken up for him... 00:20:00.10\00:20:01.66 he recognizes this isn't right, we can't kill the boy... 00:20:01.73\00:20:04.57 this is our father's son... this is our brother 00:20:04.63\00:20:06.67 and so he says, "Look, let's just kind of teach him a lesson, 00:20:06.70\00:20:09.04 let's throw him in this pit, you know, let him know that, 00:20:09.07\00:20:11.17 "Hey, we're not going to take your mess anymore, 00:20:11.21\00:20:12.91 we don't like your little dreams... 00:20:12.94\00:20:14.28 we don't like your little... you know... whatever it is... 00:20:14.31\00:20:16.31 we don't want to deal with that, 00:20:16.34\00:20:17.68 let's just teach him a lesson and throw him in a pit. " 00:20:17.71\00:20:19.05 And then, Reuben's idea was to come back later 00:20:19.08\00:20:21.68 from wherever he was 00:20:21.72\00:20:23.05 and take him out of the pit 00:20:23.08\00:20:24.42 so he can bring him back to his father. 00:20:24.45\00:20:25.79 But the story doesn't end there. 00:20:25.82\00:20:27.99 Verse 23, "So it came to pass, 00:20:28.02\00:20:30.16 when Joseph had come to his brothers, 00:20:30.19\00:20:32.03 and the stripped Joseph of his tunic, 00:20:32.06\00:20:34.70 the tunic of many colors that was on him. 00:20:34.73\00:20:37.30 Then they took him and cast him into a pit. 00:20:37.33\00:20:39.60 And the pit was empty; there was no water in it. 00:20:39.63\00:20:43.00 And they set down to eat a meal. " 00:20:43.04\00:20:45.61 The brothers over there just having... just eating a meal 00:20:45.64\00:20:47.41 and their brother's in this pit 00:20:47.48\00:20:48.81 and it goes on to say, 00:20:48.84\00:20:50.18 "Then they lifted their eyes and looked 00:20:50.21\00:20:51.55 and there was a company of Ishmaelite's, 00:20:51.58\00:20:52.91 coming from Gilead with their camels, 00:20:52.95\00:20:57.55 bearing spices, balm, and myrrh, 00:20:57.59\00:20:59.05 and on their way to carry them down to Egypt. 00:20:59.09\00:21:02.09 So Judah said to his brothers... " 00:21:02.12\00:21:04.23 now Judah speaks up and he says to his brothers, 00:21:04.26\00:21:06.43 "What profit is there if we kill our brother 00:21:06.46\00:21:09.03 and conceal his blood? 00:21:09.06\00:21:10.40 Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, 00:21:10.43\00:21:13.20 and let not our hand be upon him, 00:21:13.23\00:21:15.44 for he is our brother and our flesh. " 00:21:15.50\00:21:17.41 And notice... "And his brothers listened. " 00:21:17.44\00:21:20.38 They said, "Okay, fine, we're not going to kill him 00:21:20.41\00:21:21.78 but you know what? We can't this... " 00:21:21.81\00:21:23.14 as the Bible says, this lad... 00:21:23.18\00:21:24.51 "we can't have this lad around here anymore, 00:21:24.55\00:21:25.88 we've got to get rid of him. " 00:21:25.91\00:21:27.25 And so, in verse 28, 00:21:27.28\00:21:28.62 "Then Midianite traders passed by; 00:21:28.65\00:21:29.98 and the brothers pulled Joseph up 00:21:30.02\00:21:31.59 and lifted him out of the pit, 00:21:31.62\00:21:32.95 and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. 00:21:32.99\00:21:37.23 And they took Joseph to Egypt. " 00:21:37.26\00:21:39.03 Now you're kind of seeing this the Joseph imagery from... 00:21:39.09\00:21:41.96 from Joseph to Christ... he's a type of Christ... Jesus. 00:21:42.00\00:21:44.83 As Jesus was sold for Silver, 00:21:44.87\00:21:46.23 we see Joseph in... in his righteous state 00:21:46.27\00:21:48.64 he's being sold for doing nothing wrong, really 00:21:48.67\00:21:52.01 and then, of course, it goes on to say, 00:21:52.07\00:21:54.18 "Then Reuben... " verse 29... 00:21:54.21\00:21:56.11 "Then Reuben returned to the pit, 00:21:56.14\00:21:58.01 and indeed Joseph was not in the pit; 00:21:58.05\00:22:00.22 and he tore his clothes. 00:22:00.25\00:22:01.85 And he returned to his brothers and said, 00:22:01.88\00:22:03.28 'The lad is no more; and I, where shall I go?'" 00:22:03.32\00:22:05.95 So, Reuben's upset, you know, his brothers have... 00:22:05.99\00:22:08.69 have gotten rid of him... he's no longer there 00:22:08.72\00:22:10.39 where he thought he was going to return back 00:22:10.43\00:22:12.13 now to retrieve him and take him back to Daddy. 00:22:12.16\00:22:14.36 That's not happening though. 00:22:14.40\00:22:15.73 Verse 31, "So they took Joseph's tunic, 00:22:15.76\00:22:17.80 killed a kid of the goats, 00:22:17.83\00:22:19.17 and dipped the tunic in the blood. 00:22:19.20\00:22:20.64 Then they sent the tunic of many colors, 00:22:20.67\00:22:22.40 and they brought it to their father and said, 00:22:22.44\00:22:24.17 'We have found this. 00:22:24.21\00:22:25.54 Do you know whether it is your son's tunic or not?'" 00:22:25.57\00:22:28.18 Panel: Hmmm... Ryan: Such deceit... 00:22:28.21\00:22:29.61 such deceit... Panel: Yes. 00:22:29.64\00:22:30.98 Ryan: And then verse 33, 00:22:31.01\00:22:32.35 "And he recognized it and said, 'It is my son's tunic. 00:22:32.38\00:22:34.55 A wild beast has devoured him. 00:22:34.58\00:22:36.18 Without doubt Joseph is torn to pieces. " 00:22:36.22\00:22:38.29 Then Jacob tore his clothes, 00:22:38.32\00:22:40.72 and put sackcloth on his waist, 00:22:40.76\00:22:43.22 and mourned for his son many days. 00:22:43.26\00:22:45.23 And all his sons and all his daughters 00:22:45.26\00:22:46.63 arose to comfort him; 00:22:46.66\00:22:48.00 but he refused to be comforted, 00:22:48.03\00:22:50.03 and he said, "For I shall now go down into the grave 00:22:50.07\00:22:52.73 to my son in mourning. " 00:22:52.77\00:22:54.10 Thus his father wept for him. 00:22:54.14\00:22:56.20 And in verse 36 ends with, 00:22:56.24\00:22:57.81 "Now the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, 00:22:57.84\00:23:00.68 an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard. " 00:23:00.71\00:23:03.75 You know, it's interesting 00:23:03.78\00:23:05.11 because you can see that the devil's behind this. 00:23:05.15\00:23:06.68 The devil attacked the law 00:23:06.72\00:23:08.68 which represents the righteousness of God in heaven 00:23:08.72\00:23:11.72 long before there was an Adam or a Eve on earth 00:23:11.75\00:23:13.49 and now we see even all the way down through this... 00:23:13.52\00:23:17.13 this fallen humanity... 00:23:17.19\00:23:18.53 we see it right here in the character, 00:23:18.59\00:23:20.63 these brothers have broken half of the Ten Commandments. 00:23:20.66\00:23:23.63 For instance... "Honor thy father and thy mother" 00:23:23.67\00:23:25.53 that was gone... they dishonored their father, 00:23:25.57\00:23:27.40 "You shall not murder... " 00:23:27.44\00:23:28.87 you know, even though they didn't kill him, 00:23:28.90\00:23:30.24 remember what Jesus said, 00:23:30.27\00:23:31.61 "If you hate your brother, 00:23:31.64\00:23:32.97 this is just as well as you murdered him... " right? 00:23:33.01\00:23:34.78 "You shall not steal... " 00:23:34.81\00:23:36.21 they tore this tunic... 00:23:36.24\00:23:37.58 they stole this tunic that his father had given him. 00:23:37.61\00:23:39.05 They were thieves. 00:23:39.08\00:23:40.42 "You shall not bear false witness... Genesis chapter 38 00:25:44.27\00:25:47.48 verses 1 through 11, here's what we find now, 00:25:47.51\00:25:50.11 this is what we find... Judas... Judah gets married. 00:25:50.15\00:25:52.55 Now, we're going to break down 00:25:52.58\00:25:54.08 and go into this a little bit more 00:25:54.12\00:25:55.48 and find out how young he was when he got married 00:25:55.52\00:25:57.39 and what all took place, 00:25:57.42\00:25:58.75 but his marriage came along with some issues, 00:25:58.79\00:26:00.89 you know, again, going where God didn't want him to go 00:26:00.92\00:26:03.73 and doing different things so we'll look into that 00:26:03.76\00:26:06.49 and then... then in verses 12 through 23 00:26:06.56\00:26:09.83 we find Judas' incest with his daughter-in-law. 00:26:09.86\00:26:14.00 Tamar... notice and without him even knowing it. 00:26:14.04\00:26:18.17 So, it starts to get complicated... he didn't know it 00:26:18.21\00:26:19.94 how do you mean he didn't know it? 00:26:19.97\00:26:21.31 And so, how did this really take place? 00:26:21.34\00:26:22.68 Three: He dealt with... verses 24 through 26, 00:26:22.71\00:26:26.01 how he dealt with it when it came to light? 00:26:26.08\00:26:29.55 You know, the Bible says, "Be sure your sins will... 00:26:29.58\00:26:31.62 will find you out... " and they found him out 00:26:31.65\00:26:33.76 and then, how did he deal with it? 00:26:33.79\00:26:36.09 Four: The birth of his twin sons 00:26:36.12\00:26:39.26 verse 27 there Genesis 38, 00:26:39.29\00:26:42.06 "In him his family was built up... " 00:26:42.10\00:26:44.57 so, it's very important now. 00:26:44.60\00:26:45.93 During this lesson, this brings out a... 00:26:45.97\00:26:48.77 I want to say some sordid things went on in this story 00:26:48.80\00:26:52.07 and so, you know, 00:26:52.11\00:26:53.44 instead of trying to go into a whole lot of detail about it, 00:26:53.48\00:26:54.81 you look at it and you say, 00:26:54.84\00:26:56.24 "God is merciful and God is good and God does have a plan 00:26:56.28\00:26:59.35 and it will be fulfilled. " 00:26:59.38\00:27:00.72 But we see that I think, Brother James, you mentioned it, 00:27:00.75\00:27:04.79 that God takes, you know, some of the evil things... 00:27:04.85\00:27:06.76 and he has a way of turning them into good things. 00:27:06.79\00:27:08.66 Panel: Yeah. 00:27:08.72\00:27:10.06 Kenny: This is what He's doing right here... 00:27:10.09\00:27:11.43 He's showing us... certainly, there is hope for us, 00:27:11.46\00:27:12.79 praise God for that 00:27:12.83\00:27:14.16 especially I found out when it was linked to salvation, 00:27:14.20\00:27:17.63 salvational things and God's plan is good. 00:27:17.67\00:27:19.70 Panel: Yeah. 00:27:19.73\00:27:21.07 Kenny: In Genesis... so, where did Judah go wrong? 00:27:21.10\00:27:23.61 Now, we talk about men... you said 17... 00:27:23.64\00:27:26.57 you say... 15... you say 14 and 13... 00:27:26.61\00:27:28.14 they were getting married at that age. 00:27:28.18\00:27:29.68 Things were going on... they were having children... 00:27:29.71\00:27:31.45 lot different than we think about maybe today. 00:27:31.51\00:27:33.82 Genesis 38:1... notice... 00:27:33.85\00:27:35.45 I'm just going to look where Judah first went wrong. 00:27:35.48\00:27:37.85 You'll say, "Well, it might be in the second thing... " 00:27:37.89\00:27:40.26 but notice, Judah... you know, he's probably... 00:27:40.29\00:27:42.29 some say 14... some say 15 or 16... 00:27:42.32\00:27:44.49 so, he's very... he's very young. 00:27:44.53\00:27:46.70 Now, notice what he did. 00:27:46.73\00:27:48.06 He left his family in Genesis 38:1 00:27:48.10\00:27:52.37 and it says, "He went down. " 00:27:52.40\00:27:53.87 Now, notice... those words are not good. 00:27:53.90\00:27:56.24 "He went down... " 00:27:56.27\00:27:57.61 You know, we are to... we ought to strive to go up 00:27:57.64\00:27:59.54 isn't that right? Panel: Right. 00:27:59.57\00:28:00.91 Kenny: But notice, he left his family and he went down 00:28:00.98\00:28:02.81 and he mingled with whom? 00:28:02.84\00:28:04.25 The... the Canaanites. 00:28:04.31\00:28:05.65 It's been said especially with young people 00:28:05.68\00:28:08.38 and I think this holds true. 00:28:08.42\00:28:09.75 When they change their company, they change their manners. 00:28:09.78\00:28:13.52 Jill: That's good. 00:28:13.56\00:28:14.96 Kenny: Interesting... when you are around, 00:28:14.99\00:28:16.32 you sometimes become like that. 00:28:16.39\00:28:18.26 If this happens and many times it does, 00:28:18.29\00:28:22.73 it can be fatal so let's not overlook that part. 00:28:22.76\00:28:24.83 A bad decision... sometimes opens up the door to 00:28:24.87\00:28:28.34 another bad decision. 00:28:28.37\00:28:30.01 Now, so, how important are decisions? 00:28:30.04\00:28:32.97 I'm quoting Ministry of Healing I Ike this... page 510 says this 00:28:33.01\00:28:37.08 "Short and decisive are the steps 00:28:37.11\00:28:39.81 that lead men down from high and holy ground 00:28:39.88\00:28:43.69 to a low level. 00:28:43.72\00:28:45.22 In a moment's decision... " you've been there probably 00:28:45.25\00:28:48.42 I know I've been there. 00:28:48.46\00:28:49.92 "In a moment's decision may be made 00:28:49.96\00:28:52.06 that fixes one's condition forever. " 00:28:52.09\00:28:54.70 How important are decisions? 00:28:54.76\00:28:56.46 Can fix our destination forever. 00:28:56.50\00:28:58.43 "One failure to overcome leaves the soul unguarded. 00:28:58.50\00:29:02.60 One evil habit, if not firmly resisted, 00:29:02.64\00:29:06.74 will strengthen into chains of steel, 00:29:06.78\00:29:10.85 binding the whole man. " 00:29:10.88\00:29:12.65 So, we're saying that... we have to say, 00:29:12.68\00:29:15.55 "Then how can we make good decisions?" 00:29:15.58\00:29:17.02 Well, let's just use Jacob of an example, shall we? 00:29:17.05\00:29:19.55 Again, Ministry of Healing page 511 says this, 00:29:19.59\00:29:21.82 "It was through faith... " I like this, 00:29:21.86\00:29:24.53 "and prayer that Jacob, from being a man of... " 00:29:24.56\00:29:28.36 notice this... "feebleness and sin, 00:29:28.40\00:29:31.07 became a... oooh a prince with God. " 00:29:31.10\00:29:33.57 Notice this, this is really heavy... 00:29:33.60\00:29:35.97 "Our spirit may be so identified with His 00:29:36.00\00:29:40.64 that in thought and aim we shall be one with Him. " 00:29:40.68\00:29:46.88 Panel: Hmmm... 00:29:46.92\00:29:48.25 Kenny: Man! that should be... that's our goal 00:29:48.28\00:29:49.68 is to be one with Him... isn't that right? 00:29:49.72\00:29:51.29 Let His mind be in us. 00:29:51.32\00:29:52.69 Judah finds... Judah finds a... a Canaanite... 00:29:52.75\00:29:56.06 I want to say, first of all, the first mistake: he went down. 00:29:56.09\00:29:58.73 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... yeah. 00:29:58.76\00:30:00.46 Kenny: He knew he wasn't supposed to go there... 00:30:00.50\00:30:01.83 we know, there are principles about it, 00:30:01.86\00:30:03.20 God told, "Don't be messing with the Canaanites... " 00:30:03.23\00:30:04.83 because of all the problems. 00:30:04.87\00:30:06.20 So, now Judah... again 15 so years old... 00:30:06.23\00:30:08.80 he goes down and he begins to mess around in the... 00:30:08.84\00:30:12.07 with the Canaanites... he finds himself a wife... 00:30:12.11\00:30:15.31 Genesis 38:2 00:30:15.34\00:30:16.68 now, he has three sons... notice... 00:30:16.75\00:30:19.95 the first born is old enough... 00:30:19.98\00:30:21.45 "When he's old enough, Judah... " 00:30:21.48\00:30:22.88 what does he do again? 00:30:22.95\00:30:24.55 He goes back down to Canaan to get a wife for him, 00:30:24.59\00:30:26.96 he's really making matters worse here, right? 00:30:26.99\00:30:29.52 God says, "Don't do it... " 00:30:29.56\00:30:30.89 encouraging... don't... 00:30:30.93\00:30:32.26 don't... don't do that... Canaanite wife... now... 00:30:32.29\00:30:34.16 now, it's Tamar... 00:30:34.20\00:30:35.83 now notice, the firstborn is wild 00:30:35.86\00:30:37.67 and he's wicked and he dies. 00:30:37.70\00:30:39.47 Interesting... huh. 00:30:39.50\00:30:40.97 The second son is to take her, 00:30:41.00\00:30:43.41 we know that when one son dies 00:30:43.44\00:30:45.77 then the wife... childless, right, 00:30:45.81\00:30:48.51 this next son comes up... next son and supposed to wed her 00:30:48.54\00:30:51.35 and take her and raise seed for his brother, 00:30:51.38\00:30:54.12 well, the brother said, "Ah ah... 00:30:54.18\00:30:56.62 that's not going to happen, I'm not going to do that. " 00:30:56.65\00:30:58.85 He refuses to raise the family in remembrance of his brother 00:30:58.89\00:31:03.22 and so, he also was wicked. 00:31:03.26\00:31:06.16 I mean, the first son... wicked, 00:31:06.19\00:31:08.06 you know, he... he died early. 00:31:08.13\00:31:09.96 Second son... wicked... he died early. 00:31:10.00\00:31:12.43 So you see all the sin out there right there... 00:31:12.50\00:31:14.60 third son... you know, Judas said, "Hmmm... third son" 00:31:14.64\00:31:17.51 and now, "Oh, he's too young, 00:31:17.54\00:31:18.87 So... so... Tamar go back to your home 00:31:18.91\00:31:22.04 and you wait until he older and then you can marry him. " 00:31:22.08\00:31:24.41 So, did she really want to wait that long? 00:31:24.45\00:31:27.75 Judah put off the arrangement 00:31:27.78\00:31:30.69 and does not fulfill his promise. 00:31:30.72\00:31:33.19 I got a feeling... she's getting a bit nervous there. 00:31:33.22\00:31:35.96 Then, suddenly the death of his two older sons, 00:31:36.02\00:31:38.19 I want you to think about that for a moment. 00:31:38.26\00:31:40.43 Promised his third son... 00:31:40.46\00:31:43.37 all of a sudden he's starting to feel something. 00:31:43.43\00:31:45.27 What happened to my other two sons? 00:31:45.30\00:31:48.20 Did she have something to do with that... possibly? 00:31:48.24\00:31:51.01 and now I'm going to say 00:31:51.04\00:31:52.91 now, the third son's going to be promised to her, 00:31:52.94\00:31:54.84 he's saying, "I'm going to put it off for a while. " 00:31:54.88\00:31:56.68 So, really maybe possibly he had no intentions of fulfilling 00:31:56.71\00:31:59.71 that promise that he made. 00:31:59.75\00:32:01.08 So, we're having deceit... we're having incest... 00:32:01.12\00:32:03.05 we're having all kinds of problems going on here, 00:32:03.08\00:32:05.02 right, but it gets a little bit deeper as... 00:32:05.05\00:32:07.89 as... as we go along here. 00:32:07.92\00:32:09.26 I'm going to bring another point here, 00:32:09.29\00:32:11.06 I think I just about missed it... 00:32:11.09\00:32:12.43 I don't want to really miss that point. 00:32:12.46\00:32:13.80 Pause... 00:32:13.83\00:32:15.16 Judas says, "Go back home... don't forget to go back home 00:32:15.20\00:32:19.03 and wait until he's of age and then, when he comes of age, 00:32:19.07\00:32:23.14 then, you can get married. 00:32:23.20\00:32:24.54 Well, you know, one bad thing leads up to another... 00:32:24.57\00:32:26.94 we realize that and so 00:32:26.98\00:32:28.38 yet even in our life, you may have that going on right now, 00:32:28.41\00:32:31.68 something's happening... 00:32:31.71\00:32:33.21 you've got bad things... now all of a sudden, what? 00:32:33.25\00:32:35.18 Some worse things seem like to be coming on the scene. 00:32:35.22\00:32:37.89 Suddenly the death of his two older sons... 00:32:37.95\00:32:40.02 after the marriage to Tamar 00:32:40.06\00:32:42.39 and now notice, again, he hesitated... 00:32:42.42\00:32:44.29 he put it off and again, I don't think that he intended for it 00:32:44.33\00:32:47.96 to be fulfilled. 00:32:48.00\00:32:49.33 She had something... 00:32:49.36\00:32:50.70 did she have something to do with his death? 00:32:50.73\00:32:52.33 Well, we find out that third son was Shelah, I think 00:32:52.37\00:32:56.14 wasn't it? The name a little different maybe, 00:32:56.17\00:32:57.51 the younger son became of age, he was not given to her. 00:32:57.54\00:33:00.64 So, what did... what did... what did Tamar... Tamar do? 00:33:00.88\00:33:03.91 She was a childless widow 00:33:03.95\00:33:06.28 and she decided to take matters into her own hands. 00:33:06.31\00:33:08.88 Right and so she decides, "Okay, I can't have the sons, 00:33:08.92\00:33:11.22 then I'm going to have Dad. " Panel: Hmmm... 00:33:11.25\00:33:13.19 Kenny: That's an interesting thought 00:33:13.22\00:33:14.86 and so, he has lost his wife... 00:33:14.89\00:33:16.22 then it was time for the... we call it the... 00:33:16.26\00:33:18.59 the shearing of the sheep. 00:33:18.63\00:33:19.96 After a time of getting over the death of his wife and so on, 00:33:20.00\00:33:22.90 it's over... he goes up and he's going to shear some sheep 00:33:22.93\00:33:25.93 but along with shearing the sheep, 00:33:25.97\00:33:27.30 you say, "Well, that's going out... " 00:33:27.34\00:33:28.67 there was a time of festivities that went along... 00:33:28.70\00:33:30.57 when you said you're shearing sheep, 00:33:30.61\00:33:31.94 you're also doing other things. 00:33:31.97\00:33:33.41 Panel: Hmmm... 00:33:33.44\00:33:34.78 Kenny: And she found out that's where he was going 00:33:34.81\00:33:36.91 so she made a plan to deceive him 00:33:36.95\00:33:38.71 and to go up there 00:33:38.75\00:33:40.08 and basically saying, you know, "I'm going to have the son... 00:33:40.12\00:33:42.78 it's going to be through Dad. " 00:33:42.82\00:33:44.19 And so, she dressed as it were as... as... as a prostitute. 00:33:44.25\00:33:47.59 She covered her face... he did not know it 00:33:47.66\00:33:49.79 and when he went up and then fun and the game... 00:33:49.82\00:33:52.09 whatever was going on... 00:33:52.13\00:33:53.56 he... they made an arrangement 00:33:53.60\00:33:55.56 and she became pregnant, you know, with twins 00:33:55.60\00:33:58.13 as we well know. 00:33:58.17\00:33:59.50 But he did not know that but remember, he didn't have money 00:33:59.53\00:34:02.10 to pay her for this, right. 00:34:02.14\00:34:03.51 She was playing the prostitute. 00:34:03.57\00:34:04.91 When he found out three months later, right, 00:34:04.94\00:34:07.98 that witnesses come by and they say, "Oh... " you know, 00:34:08.01\00:34:11.11 "your daughter-in-law... she's pregnant. " 00:34:11.15\00:34:12.71 He's going, "Why, oooh, what's going on here?" 00:34:12.78\00:34:14.32 You know, 00:34:14.35\00:34:15.68 I'm going to find out what's going on with this right here 00:34:15.72\00:34:17.39 and he said, "Well, we're just going to burn her. " 00:34:17.42\00:34:19.29 Of course, that was one of the things, you know, 00:34:19.32\00:34:21.16 that could happen or sometime it's a... 00:34:21.22\00:34:23.36 it's a seal in the forehead... it can be... 00:34:23.39\00:34:25.59 and also, it can be literally burning... 00:34:25.63\00:34:27.76 he was... he was in charge... it could have happed. 00:34:27.80\00:34:29.66 But, you now, I think the story is very interesting because 00:34:29.70\00:34:33.30 she was associated with the Assyrians... 00:34:33.37\00:34:35.84 their customs and so on and so forth. 00:34:35.87\00:34:38.24 She knew... she knew that if dad didn't fulfill his promise, 00:34:38.27\00:34:42.91 that also... that what she could go to dad 00:34:42.94\00:34:46.25 and dad would have to fulfill that. 00:34:46.28\00:34:48.02 A little different that what... sometimes we think is going on, 00:34:48.05\00:34:50.59 you know, sheep-shearing time... 00:34:50.62\00:34:52.92 we have to be careful of sheep-shearing time. 00:34:52.95\00:34:54.72 Remember, things are going on... 00:34:54.76\00:34:56.32 God is greater... God is bigger 00:34:56.36\00:34:57.89 and He's going to fulfill the promises that He's made. 00:34:57.93\00:35:01.26 Hang on to Him... not the world. 00:35:01.30\00:35:02.93 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:35:02.96\00:35:04.30 Jill: Amen, thank you all so much 00:35:04.33\00:35:05.73 that's... that's a heavy chapter and mine is the opposite. 00:35:05.77\00:35:09.30 We get into... I'm Jill Morikone, 00:35:09.34\00:35:11.74 I have Wednesday: Joseph, a Slave in Egypt 00:35:11.77\00:35:14.88 and we see here Joseph resisting temptation... 00:35:14.91\00:35:17.98 where we see Judah stepping into sin, 00:35:18.01\00:35:20.78 we see Joseph resisting temptation. 00:35:20.82\00:35:23.59 So, Joseph arrives in Egypt. 00:35:23.62\00:35:25.72 The chapter of what Pastor Kenny had with Judah and Tamar 00:35:25.75\00:35:29.42 was kind of that interlude between. 00:35:29.46\00:35:30.86 We're picking up right where Pastor Ryan had left off. 00:35:30.89\00:35:34.10 Joseph was sold as a slave to Potiphar, 00:35:34.13\00:35:37.47 Captain of the king's guard there in Egypt. 00:35:37.50\00:35:40.74 So, I have... if we're going to get through it, 00:35:40.77\00:35:44.44 A... five takeaways from Joseph's temptation 00:35:44.47\00:35:47.61 and then eight lessons that you and I can learn 00:35:47.64\00:35:50.75 as we deal with temptation. 00:35:50.78\00:35:52.68 So, let's jump right in... Genesis chapter 39 verse 1. 00:35:52.71\00:35:56.62 "Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. 00:35:56.65\00:35:58.95 And Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, 00:35:58.99\00:36:00.99 Captain of the Guard an Egyptian, 00:36:01.02\00:36:02.99 bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there? " 00:36:03.02\00:36:06.76 Panel: Hmmm... 00:36:06.80\00:36:08.23 Jill: Takeaway Number 1... 00:36:08.26\00:36:09.60 When all seems lost, God is still in control. 00:36:09.63\00:36:13.54 Panel: Amen... that's right. 00:36:13.57\00:36:14.94 Jill: If you were in Joseph's shoes, 00:36:14.97\00:36:16.30 if I was in his shoes... you'd say, "Wait a minute, 00:36:16.34\00:36:18.51 I went from a favorite son to a slave... 00:36:18.54\00:36:20.38 I'm a slave here in Egypt... I'm estranged from my family... 00:36:20.41\00:36:24.28 I'm never going to see them again. " 00:36:24.31\00:36:25.71 When all seems lost... God is still in control 00:36:25.75\00:36:29.28 and He still has a plan. 00:36:29.32\00:36:30.99 Next verse... verse 2, 00:36:31.02\00:36:32.65 "The Lord was with Joseph, he was a successful man; 00:36:32.69\00:36:36.69 and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. " 00:36:36.73\00:36:40.13 Takeaway number 2: when you least expect it, 00:36:40.16\00:36:42.83 God intervenes. 00:36:42.86\00:36:44.90 The Lord was with Joseph and the Lord made him a success 00:36:44.93\00:36:48.94 as he was a slave there in Egypt. 00:36:48.97\00:36:51.64 The next verse... verse 3, 00:36:51.67\00:36:53.58 "And his master saw that the Lord was with him 00:36:53.61\00:36:56.14 and that the Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand. " 00:36:56.21\00:36:59.81 Verse 4, 00:36:59.85\00:37:01.35 "So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him. 00:37:01.38\00:37:04.49 Then he made him overseer of is house, 00:37:04.52\00:37:06.92 and all that he had he put under his authority. " 00:37:06.96\00:37:11.03 Takeaway Number 3... 00:37:11.06\00:37:12.39 When you faithfully serve... God will bless you. 00:37:12.43\00:37:16.97 Panel: Amen. 00:37:17.00\00:37:18.33 Jill: I love Proverbs 22 verse 29, 00:37:18.37\00:37:20.07 "Do you see a man who is diligent in his business? 00:37:20.10\00:37:23.27 He shall stand before kings; 00:37:23.30\00:37:25.64 he shall not stand before mean men... " 00:37:25.67\00:37:28.88 is what the King James says. 00:37:28.91\00:37:30.35 So, when you faithfully serve... God blesses. 00:37:30.38\00:37:33.58 The next verse... verse 5, 00:37:33.62\00:37:35.25 "So it was, from the time that he had made him overseer 00:37:35.28\00:37:38.59 of his house, and all that he had 00:37:38.62\00:37:40.29 that the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house... " 00:37:40.32\00:37:43.29 why? "for Joseph's sake; 00:37:43.32\00:37:46.19 and the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had 00:37:46.23\00:37:49.30 in the house and in the field. " 00:37:49.33\00:37:50.97 Takeaway Number 4: 00:37:51.00\00:37:52.50 When you belong to God, 00:37:52.53\00:37:53.87 the people around you are affected. 00:37:53.90\00:37:56.20 I love that... the Lord blessed Potiphar's house. 00:37:56.24\00:37:59.77 Did he serve God? No. 00:37:59.81\00:38:01.14 Was he a follower of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? 00:38:01.18\00:38:04.35 No... but God blessed him... an unbeliever 00:38:04.38\00:38:08.12 because a believer of the true God 00:38:08.15\00:38:11.02 was faithfully serving God in the midst of his household. 00:38:11.05\00:38:14.82 So, when you belong to God, your spouse is affected... 00:38:14.86\00:38:18.59 your children are affected... 00:38:18.63\00:38:20.93 your co-workers are affected. 00:38:20.96\00:38:23.23 Your boss is affected. 00:38:23.26\00:38:25.33 Your subordinates are affected. 00:38:25.37\00:38:27.54 When you belong to God, other people are affected. 00:38:27.57\00:38:30.27 Panel: That's right. 00:38:30.31\00:38:31.64 Jill: Verse 6... we're in Genesis 39 verse 6, 00:38:31.67\00:38:34.34 the first half of the verse, 00:38:34.38\00:38:35.71 "Thus he left all that he had in Joseph's hand, 00:38:35.74\00:38:38.71 he did not know what he had except the bread which he ate. " 00:38:38.75\00:38:42.35 Takeaway Number 5: 00:38:42.38\00:38:43.92 When you follow God, other people trust you. 00:38:43.95\00:38:47.36 Potiphar trusted Joseph with everything that he had 00:38:47.39\00:38:50.76 in his house. 00:38:50.79\00:38:52.13 Now, we come to the turning point in this story, 00:38:52.16\00:38:55.13 it seemed like he goes from the slave 00:38:55.16\00:38:57.53 where he's beaten down and he's nothing 00:38:57.57\00:38:59.90 and he rises... right? 00:38:59.93\00:39:01.34 Because of the blessing of the Lord upon him 00:39:01.37\00:39:04.44 to a level of Management there 00:39:04.47\00:39:07.64 overseeing everything in Potiphar's house. 00:39:07.68\00:39:10.25 And now, we see... there is trouble in paradise... 00:39:10.28\00:39:13.85 the second half of verse 6, 00:39:13.88\00:39:16.48 "Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance. " 00:39:16.52\00:39:22.69 Now, it's interesting to me... 00:39:22.72\00:39:24.33 the Word of God usually doesn't say what people look like right? 00:39:24.36\00:39:27.00 We don't know what Mary the mother of Jesus looked like. 00:39:27.03\00:39:29.53 We don't know a lot of people... 00:39:29.56\00:39:31.60 we don't know what they looked like. 00:39:31.63\00:39:32.97 But it says "Joseph was handsome in form and appearance. " 00:39:33.00\00:39:36.50 The word for "form" in Hebrew is: outline, form or figure. 00:39:36.54\00:39:40.18 So, that means... his body... 00:39:40.21\00:39:42.24 Joseph is well-built. 00:39:42.28\00:39:43.71 The word for appearance is literally: countenance. 00:39:43.75\00:39:47.38 He had a good-looking face. 00:39:47.42\00:39:48.92 So, he had a good-looking face and a good-looking body. 00:39:48.95\00:39:51.45 It's actually the same two Hebrew words 00:39:51.52\00:39:53.09 that is used to describe Rachel... Joseph's mama. 00:39:53.12\00:39:56.59 Panel: Hmmm... Jill: In Genesis 29:17 it says, 00:39:56.62\00:40:00.10 "Leah's eyes were delicate, 00:40:00.13\00:40:01.46 but Rachel was beautiful of form and appearance. " 00:40:01.50\00:40:04.33 The same two words... 00:40:04.37\00:40:05.70 so he must have gotten his looks from his mother. 00:40:05.73\00:40:07.64 And Potiphar's wife begins to take notice. 00:40:07.67\00:40:10.94 Let's look at verse 7 through 10, 00:40:10.97\00:40:12.87 we see the temptation. 00:40:12.91\00:40:14.24 "And it came to pass after these things 00:40:14.28\00:40:16.34 that his master's wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, 00:40:16.38\00:40:19.41 and she said, 'Lie with me. ' 00:40:19.45\00:40:21.28 But he refused and said to his master's wife, 00:40:21.32\00:40:24.52 'Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, 00:40:24.55\00:40:27.56 and he has committed all that he has into my hand. 00:40:27.59\00:40:30.16 There is no one greater in this house than I, 00:40:30.19\00:40:33.40 nor has he kept back anything from me but you, 00:40:33.43\00:40:36.00 because you are his wife. 00:40:36.03\00:40:38.13 How then can I do this great wickedness, 00:40:38.17\00:40:41.77 and sin against God?' 00:40:41.80\00:40:44.14 So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, 00:40:44.17\00:40:46.94 that he did not heed her, 00:40:46.98\00:40:48.31 to lie with her or to be with her. " 00:40:48.34\00:40:51.48 Sometimes, when Satan cannot get us with discouragement, 00:40:51.51\00:40:57.09 he tries pleasure. 00:40:57.12\00:40:58.45 Joseph had faithfully served God in discouragement... 00:40:58.49\00:41:03.09 in trying times... 00:41:03.12\00:41:05.06 and Joseph would not bend... 00:41:05.09\00:41:06.70 he faithfully served God... 00:41:06.73\00:41:08.66 so, Satan says, "I'm going to try something else. " 00:41:08.70\00:41:11.10 So, let's look at these lessons, if we get through them, 00:41:11.13\00:41:14.47 eight lessons that you and I can learn 00:41:14.50\00:41:16.30 when dealing with temptation. 00:41:16.34\00:41:18.27 Lesson Number 1: 00:41:18.31\00:41:19.71 Make decisions on principle not by how you feel. 00:41:19.74\00:41:24.55 Was Joseph tempted by Potiphar's wife? 00:41:24.58\00:41:27.68 The Bible doesn't explicitly say that 00:41:27.72\00:41:29.68 but if you study what Egyptian women wore, 00:41:29.72\00:41:32.05 and the fact that she clearly came on to him, 00:41:32.09\00:41:35.22 I would have to say, "He was probably tempted. " 00:41:35.26\00:41:37.43 James chapter 1 verses 14 and 15, 00:41:37.46\00:41:41.43 what does it say? 00:41:41.46\00:41:42.80 "Each one is tempted when he's drawn away 00:41:42.83\00:41:45.03 by his own desires and enticed. 00:41:45.07\00:41:46.80 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; 00:41:46.84\00:41:50.01 and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. " 00:41:50.04\00:41:53.84 You see, desire is not wrong and feeling is not wrong. 00:41:53.88\00:41:56.51 It is what we do with that. 00:41:56.54\00:41:59.38 There's that old saying that I love... 00:41:59.41\00:42:02.75 "You can't stop the birds from flying over your head, 00:42:02.78\00:42:05.42 but you can stop them from building a nest in your hair. " 00:42:05.45\00:42:08.52 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:42:08.56\00:42:09.89 Jill: Make decisions on principle... 00:42:09.92\00:42:11.39 not by how you feel. 00:42:11.43\00:42:12.89 Lesson Number 2: 00:42:12.96\00:42:14.40 Make decisions on how it affects God 00:42:14.43\00:42:17.43 not yourself or even other people. 00:42:17.47\00:42:20.44 What did Joseph say? 00:42:20.47\00:42:21.80 "How can I do this great wickedness... " 00:42:21.84\00:42:23.30 and her... you know... 00:42:23.34\00:42:25.34 "and sin against God?" 00:42:25.37\00:42:27.31 We often think, "Oh, this little thing won't... 00:42:27.34\00:42:29.61 it won't hurt me... it's no big deal... 00:42:29.64\00:42:31.45 I'm not hurting anybody but myself. " 00:42:31.51\00:42:33.18 No... it's hurting God. Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:42:33.21\00:42:35.75 Jill: David... after his sin with Bathsheba, 00:42:35.78\00:42:38.55 the Psalm of confession... Psalm chapter 51... 00:42:38.59\00:42:41.32 what did he say in verse 4? 00:42:41.36\00:42:42.69 "Against You, You only, have I sinned, 00:42:42.72\00:42:45.63 and done this evil in Your sight. " 00:42:45.66\00:42:48.16 Had he hurt Bathsheba? Absolutely... 00:42:48.23\00:42:50.37 Had he hurt Bathsheba's husband? 00:42:50.57\00:42:51.90 Absolutely. 00:42:51.93\00:42:53.27 But the sin was against God Himself. 00:42:53.30\00:42:55.30 Make decisions based on how it impacts God. 00:42:55.34\00:42:58.97 Number 3: Once you've made your decision... stick with it. 00:42:59.01\00:43:02.04 Don't change your mind. 00:43:02.11\00:43:03.45 She spoke to him day by day but he didn't listen to her. 00:43:03.48\00:43:06.82 Number 4: Sometimes drastic action is required. 00:43:06.85\00:43:11.15 We're back in Genesis 39 verses 11 and 12, 00:43:11.22\00:43:13.96 "It happened at this time, 00:43:13.99\00:43:15.86 when Joseph went into the house to do his work, 00:43:15.89\00:43:18.09 none of the men were inside the house, 00:43:18.13\00:43:19.73 that she caught him by the garment saying, 00:43:19.76\00:43:21.33 'Lie with me. ' 00:43:21.36\00:43:22.70 But he left the garment in her hand, 00:43:22.73\00:43:24.33 and he turned and he ran outside. " 00:43:24.37\00:43:26.53 Panel: Hmmm... 00:43:26.57\00:43:27.90 Jill: You know, Mark 9:43 to 47 has an interesting connection. 00:43:27.94\00:43:33.71 It says, "If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. 00:43:33.74\00:43:36.68 If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off, 00:43:36.71\00:43:39.51 If your eye causes you to sin, cut it off. " 00:43:39.55\00:43:41.92 Jesus is not promoting self-mutilation. 00:43:41.95\00:43:44.59 He's saying that sin needs to be dealt with quickly at any cost. 00:43:44.62\00:43:48.32 Do not explain away sin... do not excuse it... 00:43:48.36\00:43:51.33 do not rationalize sin... do not minimize sin. 00:43:51.36\00:43:54.26 When drastic action is required, you take the drastic action. 00:43:54.30\00:43:57.80 Number 5: Make no provision for the flesh. 00:43:57.83\00:44:01.17 Romans 13 verse 14, 00:44:01.20\00:44:03.24 "Put on the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:44:03.27\00:44:04.61 and do not make provision for the flesh. " 00:44:04.64\00:44:06.98 Sin needs to be dealt with quickly at any cost. 00:44:07.01\00:44:09.48 Panel: Yes. 00:44:09.51\00:44:10.85 Jill: For instance, if your issue is pornography, 00:44:10.88\00:44:12.21 you cut off the Internet. 00:44:12.25\00:44:13.58 You throw away your magazines. 00:44:13.62\00:44:15.12 You cancel that subscription. 00:44:15.15\00:44:16.82 Do not have things in your home that cause you to stumble. 00:44:16.89\00:44:21.09 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... Jill: Number 6: 00:44:21.12\00:44:23.76 Accept the power of the Holy Spirit... 00:44:23.79\00:44:26.36 we cannot do anything 00:44:26.39\00:44:27.73 without the power of the Holy Spirit living in us. 00:44:27.76\00:44:31.20 Number 7: Utilize the power of the Word of God. 00:44:31.23\00:44:34.80 God's Word works in our hearts to free us from sin. 00:44:34.84\00:44:38.37 Number 8: Crucify the flesh... 00:44:38.41\00:44:40.68 that old man or that old woman of sin. 00:44:40.71\00:44:43.81 Joseph's decision to stand for right cost him his job. 00:44:43.85\00:44:47.88 It cost him his freedom yet it was the right decision. 00:44:47.92\00:44:51.92 His master's wife falsely accused him... 00:44:51.95\00:44:54.22 he was thrown into prison, 00:44:54.26\00:44:55.72 yet, even there God showed up. 00:44:55.76\00:44:57.96 In Genesis 39, the last verse says, 00:44:57.99\00:45:00.40 God was with him. 00:45:00.43\00:45:01.76 God showed him mercy and showed him favor 00:45:01.80\00:45:04.37 in the sight of the keeper of the prison. 00:45:04.40\00:45:07.04 So, stand for God... you will never regret it. 00:45:07.07\00:45:10.27 Panel: Amen... wow! yes, thank you. 00:45:10.31\00:45:12.67 Lomacang: Thank you for passing that on to me the way you have 00:45:12.71\00:45:15.34 because when he's thrown in prison, 00:45:15.38\00:45:16.71 I must begin by saying, 00:45:16.75\00:45:18.41 "God's providence knows no haste and no delay. " 00:45:18.45\00:45:22.85 Every experience we are called to endure 00:45:22.88\00:45:25.09 has an expiration date. 00:45:25.12\00:45:26.79 Every setback is a setup for comeback. 00:45:26.82\00:45:30.76 So, here we are... Joseph standing firmly... 00:45:30.79\00:45:33.66 I'm John Lomacang 00:45:33.70\00:45:35.33 and we're going to walk through Genesis chapter 40 and 41. 00:45:35.36\00:45:37.90 What I've noticed about the author of this lesson... 00:45:37.93\00:45:40.54 he has made us read and... 00:45:40.57\00:45:43.27 and my wife and I have taken this one as a project 00:45:43.30\00:45:46.51 together... reading this lesson through together 00:45:46.54\00:45:48.11 and how enhancing it has been. 00:45:48.14\00:45:50.08 Every setback is a setup for a divine comeback. 00:45:50.11\00:45:54.22 When you stand for what's right, 00:45:54.25\00:45:56.12 God never abandons you but He holds you 00:45:56.15\00:45:59.82 in a position where your timing is a moment 00:45:59.85\00:46:05.89 for God to be exalted. 00:46:05.93\00:46:07.36 Now Joseph... lovely the way you established that... 00:46:07.40\00:46:12.10 I love the way you established how Jesus works. 00:46:12.13\00:46:14.64 Thank you so much. 00:46:14.67\00:46:16.00 Every experience we are called to endure 00:46:16.04\00:46:18.77 has an expiration date. 00:46:18.81\00:46:20.48 But if we would hold on when the trials passed... 00:46:20.51\00:46:24.95 when the trials finally pass, 00:46:24.98\00:46:26.95 we'll see that God's providence has always been in charge. 00:46:26.98\00:46:31.12 When we take a stand for what is right, 00:46:31.15\00:46:33.66 God will cause our difficulty to be reversed for our blessing. 00:46:33.69\00:46:39.49 Now we look at the story in Genesis chapter 40 and 41, 00:46:39.53\00:46:42.96 we begin by the baker and the butler. 00:46:43.00\00:46:46.94 I want to begin in Genesis chapter 40 00:46:46.97\00:46:50.84 and I'm just going to walk through the story 00:46:50.87\00:46:54.08 rather than reading... this was a lot of reading. 00:46:54.14\00:46:56.51 You find the butler and the baker 00:46:56.54\00:46:59.95 made a wrong decision and ended up incarcerated. 00:46:59.98\00:47:03.99 Panel: Hmmm... 00:47:04.02\00:47:05.35 Lomacang: But it was not a coincidence. 00:47:05.39\00:47:08.06 Even both of them being incarcerated... 00:47:08.09\00:47:10.79 I looked back on the story and said... what... 00:47:10.83\00:47:12.96 if they were not incarcerated, they would not have met Joseph 00:47:12.99\00:47:15.36 and in their incarceration, they both had a dream 00:47:15.40\00:47:18.37 but they could not interpret the dream. 00:47:18.40\00:47:20.24 One... let me just go-ahead and read verses 9 and 11, 00:47:20.27\00:47:24.64 about the... the chief butler. 00:47:24.67\00:47:28.28 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:47:28.31\00:47:29.64 "Then the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, 00:47:29.68\00:47:31.38 and said to him, 00:47:31.41\00:47:32.75 'Behold, in my dream a vine was before me, 00:47:32.78\00:47:35.45 and in the vine were three branches; 00:47:35.48\00:47:37.72 and it was as though it budded, its blossoms shot forth, 00:47:37.75\00:47:43.43 and its clusters brought forth ripe grapes. 00:47:43.46\00:47:46.49 Then Pharaoh's cup was in my hand; 00:47:46.53\00:47:48.40 and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, 00:47:48.43\00:47:51.43 and placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand. '" 00:47:51.47\00:47:54.07 And... and... Joseph made it very clear 00:47:54.10\00:47:57.37 when... when the butler couldn't understand it, 00:47:57.41\00:47:59.21 he said in verse 8, 00:47:59.24\00:48:00.58 "Do not interpretations belong to God? 00:48:00.61\00:48:02.98 Tell them to me, please. " 00:48:03.01\00:48:05.21 And so, the butler is telling him... 00:48:05.25\00:48:07.28 and this turns out that the dream that the butler had 00:48:07.32\00:48:11.42 meant that the chief butler would be restored. 00:48:11.45\00:48:14.59 Panel: Come on... 00:48:14.62\00:48:15.96 Lomacang: But then the baker said, 00:48:15.99\00:48:17.36 "Well, I had a dream too. " Panel: Smiling... 00:48:17.39\00:48:19.19 Lomacang: He should not have told the dream. 00:48:19.23\00:48:21.00 Verses 16 to 17 of Genesis chapter 40, 00:48:21.03\00:48:24.40 "When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, 00:48:24.43\00:48:28.67 he said to Joseph, 'I also was in my dream, 00:48:28.70\00:48:31.71 and there were three white baskets on my head. 00:48:31.74\00:48:36.21 In the uppermost basket were all kinds of baked goods 00:48:36.24\00:48:39.98 for Pharaoh, 00:48:40.02\00:48:41.38 and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head. " 00:48:41.42\00:48:44.25 And Joseph probably said, 00:48:44.29\00:48:46.55 "He shouldn't have told me that dream... " 00:48:46.59\00:48:48.82 because it turned out that the chief baker would be hanged 00:48:48.86\00:48:52.33 and the birds would eat his flesh. 00:48:52.36\00:48:54.60 Panel: Yes. Lomacang: It's a sad story but 00:48:54.63\00:48:56.03 Joseph said, "When you tell these dreams to Pharaoh, 00:48:56.06\00:49:00.00 please remember me. " 00:49:00.04\00:49:01.37 And the Bible said of verse 23 of Genesis chapter 40, 00:49:01.40\00:49:05.47 "Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, 00:49:05.51\00:49:08.31 but forgot him. " 00:49:08.34\00:49:09.98 Now, I look at this as not coincidental 00:49:10.01\00:49:12.21 but once again... because sometimes people will say, 00:49:12.25\00:49:15.38 and they will get upset with people that appear 00:49:15.42\00:49:17.59 to forget them, 00:49:17.62\00:49:19.35 but God blocked... 00:49:19.39\00:49:21.06 because this very disappointment 00:49:21.09\00:49:24.26 was really a preparation for a divine appointment. 00:49:24.29\00:49:29.16 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... hmmmm. 00:49:29.20\00:49:30.53 Sometimes, we can be released from our suffering 00:49:30.57\00:49:33.23 but it has no purpose to serve in God's broader picture. 00:49:33.27\00:49:37.17 The... the deliverance had to be done a certain way... 00:49:37.21\00:49:41.08 that's where we get to Pharaoh's dream 00:49:41.11\00:49:43.91 in Genesis chapter 41 verses 15 and 16, 00:49:43.95\00:49:46.72 and by the way, 00:49:46.75\00:49:48.42 the way that Joseph was called to that moment is 00:49:48.45\00:49:52.39 when Pharaoh told his dream to the butler... 00:49:52.42\00:49:56.32 the butler said, 00:49:56.36\00:49:57.99 "I was in prison and there was a guy that was in there 00:49:58.03\00:50:01.13 that not only told me what my dream was 00:50:01.16\00:50:03.53 but it came to pass exactly the way that he said it would. " 00:50:03.57\00:50:07.54 And so, they went and called for Joseph... 00:50:07.57\00:50:10.51 cleaned him up... 00:50:10.54\00:50:11.87 dressed him up 00:50:11.91\00:50:13.24 and he came before the king... before Pharaoh 00:50:13.27\00:50:17.65 and here is what the Bible records about that meeting. 00:50:17.68\00:50:21.05 The details are phenomenal, you should read the story. 00:50:21.08\00:50:23.39 He says in verse 15, "I have had a dream, 00:50:23.42\00:50:27.82 and there is no one who can interpret it? 00:50:27.86\00:50:30.56 But I have heard it said of you 00:50:30.59\00:50:33.26 that you can understand a dream, to interpret it. " 00:50:33.29\00:50:36.30 So Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, 00:50:36.33\00:50:39.23 "It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace. " 00:50:39.27\00:50:43.64 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:50:43.67\00:50:45.34 Lomacang: And you'll find in both instances... 00:50:45.37\00:50:47.11 the butler and the baker and Pharaoh. 00:50:47.14\00:50:49.54 You find in both instances, 00:50:49.58\00:50:51.31 Joseph did not take the credit to himself. 00:50:51.35\00:50:53.78 Panel: That's right. 00:50:53.82\00:50:55.18 Lomacang: One of the things that we have to keep in mind 00:50:55.22\00:50:56.62 especially those of us who are in public life, 00:50:56.65\00:50:58.35 whenever somebody compliments you... 00:50:58.39\00:51:00.59 always give the glory to God. Panel: That's good. 00:51:00.62\00:51:03.22 Lomacang: "Wow! do you know, that was really good... 00:51:03.26\00:51:05.83 you really liked that? I can do it again next week. " 00:51:05.86\00:51:07.93 Panel: Laughing. 00:51:07.96\00:51:09.30 Lomacang: No... always give the glory to God 00:51:09.33\00:51:11.03 because I know that each one of us has a gift 00:51:11.07\00:51:13.13 that God has entrusted to us. 00:51:13.17\00:51:14.57 God has not said, "This is your gift, 00:51:14.60\00:51:16.64 do with it as you please. " 00:51:16.67\00:51:18.01 No... every gift that we have was given to us by God... 00:51:18.04\00:51:21.74 always give glory to God. 00:51:21.78\00:51:24.05 Panel: Yeah... hmmm... hmmm... 00:51:24.08\00:51:25.41 Lomacang: So, when I look at the story, 00:51:25.45\00:51:26.85 Joe... I said, "Joe... " 00:51:26.88\00:51:29.18 I'm thinking of Jill... Panel: Laughter. 00:51:29.22\00:51:31.55 Lomacang: I called you "Julie" in the past 00:51:31.62\00:51:33.96 and now, I'm about to call you Joe. 00:51:33.99\00:51:35.32 Jill: Thank you... Panel: Laughter. 00:51:35.36\00:51:36.69 Lomacang: You had four specific takeaways 00:51:36.73\00:51:38.76 about how God works. 00:51:38.79\00:51:40.13 First of all, Amos 3 and verse 7, 00:51:40.16\00:51:42.70 "God is the revealer of all secret things... " 00:51:42.73\00:51:47.14 and I love the way He considers his servants in the... 00:51:47.17\00:51:51.64 in the scenario of revealing what is secret to everyone else. 00:51:51.67\00:51:55.74 Panel: Yes. 00:51:55.78\00:51:57.11 Lomacang: Amos 3:7, "Surely the Lord God... 00:51:57.15\00:51:58.65 surely the Lord God does nothing, 00:51:58.68\00:52:00.38 unless He reveals His secrets to His servants the prophets. " 00:52:00.42\00:52:03.62 I told somebody once, I said, "God has secrets... 00:52:03.65\00:52:06.76 but He doesn't tell everyone... " 00:52:06.79\00:52:08.59 and he says, "Really?" 00:52:08.62\00:52:10.09 and it was another pastor. 00:52:10.13\00:52:11.49 He said, "What are those secrets?" 00:52:11.53\00:52:13.16 I said, "Well, you got to be God's servants to know... " 00:52:13.19\00:52:15.26 and he was desirous 00:52:15.33\00:52:16.67 and when I read it by God's Word, 00:52:16.70\00:52:18.03 he said, "That's phenomenal. " 00:52:18.07\00:52:19.40 God reveals secrets... 00:52:19.43\00:52:21.34 He is the revealer of all secrets. 00:52:21.37\00:52:22.70 Number 2: God is the guardian of all secrets. 00:52:22.74\00:52:25.71 Panel: Yes. 00:52:25.74\00:52:27.08 Lomacang: Deuteronomy 29:29, 00:52:27.11\00:52:28.84 "The secret things belong to the Lord our God, 00:52:28.88\00:52:31.48 but those things which are revealed belong to us 00:52:31.51\00:52:34.08 and to our children forever, 00:52:34.12\00:52:35.78 that we may do all the words of this law. " 00:52:35.85\00:52:39.65 If God is... if God is guarding a secret 00:52:39.69\00:52:43.43 that He doesn't want you to know, 00:52:43.46\00:52:45.43 don't presume on God and continue begging God 00:52:45.46\00:52:48.53 when His desire is for you not to know... 00:52:48.56\00:52:51.13 let's go back to the beginning of Genesis, 00:52:51.17\00:52:53.70 what happened when Satan said, 00:52:53.74\00:52:55.84 "God has something He doesn't want you to know... " 00:52:55.87\00:52:58.27 and even Adam fell into the pit of trying to find out 00:52:58.31\00:53:01.94 what God determined to guard. Panel: Hmmm... 00:53:02.28\00:53:04.05 Lomacang: The third one... 00:53:04.08\00:53:05.41 God's knowledge supersedes our intellect. 00:53:05.45\00:53:07.58 Panel: Yes. 00:53:07.62\00:53:09.02 Lomacang: Isaiah 55 verse 9, 00:53:09.05\00:53:10.39 "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, 00:53:10.42\00:53:13.09 so are My ways higher than your ways, 00:53:13.12\00:53:15.96 and My thoughts than your thoughts. " 00:53:15.99\00:53:18.79 So, this is something that amazes me, 00:53:18.83\00:53:22.20 I used to hear about... well, not used to... 00:53:22.23\00:53:24.53 but I still hear about people getting degrees and... 00:53:24.57\00:53:26.87 and it always bothers me when I hear the phrase... 00:53:26.90\00:53:29.17 somebody just got their Master of Divinity 00:53:29.20\00:53:31.84 and I always ask myself, "How can you master Divinity?" 00:53:31.87\00:53:36.48 Panel: Laughter. 00:53:36.51\00:53:37.85 Lomacang: Now, I understand they may have fulfilled 00:53:37.88\00:53:39.21 the requirements in the course 00:53:39.25\00:53:40.58 but I think they need to change that 00:53:40.62\00:53:41.95 from a Master of Divinity 00:53:41.98\00:53:43.79 to an accomplishment of a Master's degree 00:53:43.82\00:53:46.65 but we can never master Divinity. 00:53:46.69\00:53:49.09 I thought, "How... what degree did you get?" 00:53:49.12\00:53:51.73 "A Masters of Divinity. " 00:53:51.79\00:53:53.33 Lomacang: Now understand... I'm putting this 00:53:53.40\00:53:55.20 in the proper context... that seems kind of cocky to me 00:53:55.23\00:53:58.43 that we could ever master Divinity... 00:53:58.47\00:54:00.67 excuse me... that's where I am right now. 00:54:00.70\00:54:02.50 Panel: It's all right. Lomacang: The fourth one: 00:54:02.57\00:54:04.04 God's knowledge transcends our speculation. 00:54:04.07\00:54:06.44 Isaiah 46 verses 9 and 10, 00:54:06.47\00:54:08.81 "Remember the former things of old, 00:54:08.84\00:54:10.48 for I am God, and there is no other; 00:54:10.51\00:54:11.98 I am God, and there is none like Me. 00:54:12.01\00:54:13.58 Declaring the end from the beginning, 00:54:13.62\00:54:15.75 and from ancient times things that are not yet done, 00:54:15.78\00:54:18.55 saying, 'My counsel shall stand, 00:54:18.59\00:54:20.19 And I will do all My pleasure. '" 00:54:20.22\00:54:21.56 God's foreknowledge transcends our speculation. 00:54:21.59\00:54:26.13 If you don't understand it, don't speculate. 00:54:26.16\00:54:28.66 Wait for God to reveal it in His time. 00:54:28.70\00:54:30.47 So, the question is: How can we learn to trust God 00:54:30.50\00:54:33.54 and cling to His promises even when it does not appear 00:54:33.57\00:54:36.47 that Providence is in charge at all? 00:54:36.50\00:54:38.07 Four very quick points: 00:54:38.11\00:54:40.28 God took Joseph from incarceration to liberation. 00:54:40.31\00:54:46.18 Jill: Nice... Panel: Yes. 00:54:46.21\00:54:47.62 Lomacang: Wait on God. 00:54:47.65\00:54:48.98 God traded Joseph's humiliation for exaltation... 00:54:49.02\00:54:53.42 but only in His time. 00:54:53.46\00:54:55.06 God transforms Joseph's condemnation to commendation 00:54:55.12\00:54:59.83 and finally, Joseph rose in God's time from pits to palaces. 00:54:59.86\00:55:06.27 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:55:06.30\00:55:07.84 Lomacang: That's why we know all things work together 00:55:07.87\00:55:10.17 for good to those who love God, 00:55:10.21\00:55:11.61 and are called according to His purpose, Romans 8:28. 00:55:11.64\00:55:15.38 Jill: Amen. Panel: That's right, amen, amen. 00:55:15.41\00:55:18.21 James: Great lesson study from each one of us. 00:55:18.25\00:55:21.08 So, just to close things up, 00:55:21.12\00:55:23.39 we got a couple of minutes just to summarize 00:55:23.42\00:55:25.35 our lessons for this week, Ryan. 00:55:25.39\00:55:28.92 Ryan: You know, Joseph's brothers lacked a lot of love 00:55:28.99\00:55:32.13 and, you know, that love can only come 00:55:32.16\00:55:34.50 by the working of the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:55:34.53\00:55:36.20 You know, what comes to my mind is the text in 1 Corinthians 13 00:55:36.23\00:55:39.43 verses 4 and onward, 00:55:39.47\00:55:40.94 it says, "Long suffers long and is kind, 00:55:40.97\00:55:42.60 love does not envy; love does not parade itself, 00:55:42.64\00:55:44.97 love is not puffed up; 00:55:45.01\00:55:46.41 love does not behave rudely, 00:55:46.44\00:55:49.21 love does not seek its own... " 00:55:49.24\00:55:51.31 and... in this case, you know, 00:55:51.35\00:55:53.31 we need... we need that power of love in our life 00:55:53.38\00:55:55.38 and it can only come by surrendering to the Holy Spirit. 00:55:55.42\00:55:58.19 Kenny: Amen... praise the Lord, 00:55:58.22\00:55:59.85 you know, some of the things that we've encountered 00:55:59.92\00:56:02.22 and we went over here... it got kind of messy 00:56:02.26\00:56:04.46 but God sure straightened it out and that's good. 00:56:04.49\00:56:06.80 It's just... it's just couple of little lines 00:56:06.83\00:56:09.06 from that little song that I learned many years ago, 00:56:09.10\00:56:11.20 says, "For His eye is on the sparrow 00:56:11.23\00:56:14.40 and I know He watches me. " 00:56:14.44\00:56:17.04 Panel: That's right... amen... hmmm... 00:56:17.07\00:56:18.41 Jill: All right, Genesis 39 00:56:18.44\00:56:19.77 which is really all about temptation. 00:56:19.81\00:56:21.74 and none of us can escape temptation. 00:56:21.78\00:56:23.31 It's because we live in this world of sin. 00:56:23.35\00:56:25.31 So, I want to encourage you whether you have been tempted 00:56:25.38\00:56:28.32 and have fallen... 00:56:28.35\00:56:29.75 whether you are right now struggling with that temptation, 00:56:29.78\00:56:32.85 reach out to Jesus... He can forgive... 00:56:32.89\00:56:36.12 He can cleanse... He can give you victory. 00:56:36.16\00:56:39.33 Panel: Amen. Lomacang: That's right 00:56:39.36\00:56:40.70 and Genesis 40 and 41, is simply a beautiful lesson 00:56:40.73\00:56:45.27 in waiting on the Lord. 00:56:45.30\00:56:46.63 Isaiah tells us clearly... in Isaiah 40 and verse 31, 00:56:46.67\00:56:52.74 "But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; 00:56:52.77\00:56:57.35 They shall mount up with wings like eagles, 00:56:57.38\00:57:00.22 they shall run and not be weary, 00:57:00.25\00:57:02.22 they shall walk and not faint. " 00:57:02.25\00:57:04.05 If you are in a pit... wait on God... 00:57:04.09\00:57:06.55 you'll eventually be in a palace. 00:57:06.59\00:57:08.89 Panel: Smiling... amen. 00:57:09.02\00:57:10.36 James: Amen, well it's been a good Lesson Study this week 00:57:10.39\00:57:13.60 from Genesis chapter 37 through Genesis 41 00:57:13.63\00:57:16.83 and one of the main points 00:57:16.87\00:57:18.53 that I think Pastor John you brought out that I loved 00:57:18.57\00:57:21.94 and I think can summarize the whole Lesson Study 00:57:21.97\00:57:24.54 is that our trials have an expiration date 00:57:24.57\00:57:28.31 where... where just as it says in Psalm 23... 00:57:28.34\00:57:32.01 walking through the valley of the shadow of death. 00:57:32.05\00:57:34.55 Keep on walking with the Lord... 00:57:34.58\00:57:37.39 He will take you through this valley. 00:57:37.42\00:57:39.35 That trial will expire and He will bring you 00:57:39.39\00:57:42.89 like He did with Joseph 00:57:42.92\00:57:44.26 and like He has done all through the book of Genesis, 00:57:44.29\00:57:46.86 He will bring His goodness... His righteousness to pass. 00:57:46.90\00:57:49.73 Well, we're finished with Lesson Number 11, 00:57:49.76\00:57:51.77 Joseph, Master of Dreams 00:57:51.80\00:57:53.13 and we're going to be going into Lesson Number 12: 00:57:53.17\00:57:55.94 Joseph, Prince of Egypt. 00:57:55.97\00:57:57.67 Again, the last sections... the last lessons 00:57:57.71\00:57:59.74 are all about Joseph, 00:57:59.77\00:58:01.11 so, we want to invite you to join us 00:58:01.14\00:58:03.35 as we continue and finish up our study 00:58:03.38\00:58:05.55 in the book of Genesis. 00:58:05.61\00:58:06.95 Panel: Hmmm... amen... amen. 00:58:06.98\00:58:08.32
