Simeon and Levi specifically, 00:04:02.60\00:04:06.14 wipe out an entire town in their rage 00:04:06.17\00:04:09.84 for their desire for vengeance. 00:04:09.91\00:04:11.65 We'll discover that there's still idolatry 00:04:11.68\00:04:14.18 in Jacob's household. 00:04:14.22\00:04:16.25 You know, I think the story is not so much 00:04:16.28\00:04:18.62 about the faithfulness 00:04:18.65\00:04:19.99 or seeming unfaithfulness of the man... 00:04:20.02\00:04:22.52 the story is all about our Covenant-keeping God 00:04:22.56\00:04:26.49 and the faithfulness of the God that we serve 00:04:26.53\00:04:30.40 and how God orchestrates events to lead us to repentance 00:04:30.47\00:04:34.44 because he desires that we would be saved 00:04:34.47\00:04:38.27 in His kingdom at last. 00:04:38.31\00:04:40.38 The Word of God really if you boil it all down 00:04:40.41\00:04:43.91 is... it's about redemption. 00:04:43.95\00:04:46.15 It is about salvation. 00:04:46.18\00:04:48.35 That's what we find from Genesis 00:04:48.38\00:04:50.65 all the way to the book of Revelation... 00:04:50.69\00:04:52.95 is a God who loves His people 00:04:52.99\00:04:55.66 and wants to save them 00:04:55.69\00:04:57.73 and that's what we discover this week about Jacob as well. 00:04:57.76\00:05:01.00 Let's read our Memory Text. 00:05:01.06\00:05:02.40 We're in Genesis chapter 32 we're going to look at verse 28. 00:05:02.43\00:05:06.47 Genesis 32 verse 28, 00:05:06.50\00:05:08.80 "And He said, 'Your name will no longer be called Jacob, 00:05:08.84\00:05:12.97 but Israel; 00:05:13.01\00:05:14.38 for you have struggled with God and with men, 00:05:14.41\00:05:17.95 and have prevailed. " 00:05:17.98\00:05:20.05 On Sunday's lesson, we look at: Wrestling with God 00:05:20.08\00:05:23.45 and I've divided the lesson into two portions. 00:05:23.49\00:05:25.45 The first portion is the setup 00:05:25.49\00:05:27.39 and most of the setup is largely human work... 00:05:27.42\00:05:31.46 there is a prayer in the middle of that 00:05:31.49\00:05:33.60 and then we get to the second portion of the lesson 00:05:33.66\00:05:36.33 which is the actual "Wrestle with God" 00:05:36.36\00:05:38.77 Jacob's experience wrestling with God. 00:05:38.80\00:05:41.20 So, let's look at the setup, 00:05:41.24\00:05:42.67 there are a lot of verses to read here... 00:05:42.70\00:05:44.27 we're not going to read them all 00:05:44.31\00:05:45.64 but we will cover the concepts there. 00:05:45.67\00:05:47.38 This setup... I have five steps that I found in the setup... 00:05:47.41\00:05:51.05 is the promise of peace... 00:05:51.08\00:05:52.95 preparation for battle... 00:05:52.98\00:05:54.95 prayers for deliverance... 00:05:54.98\00:05:56.89 presence to pacify... 00:05:56.92\00:05:59.25 and preparation for protection. 00:05:59.32\00:06:02.42 So, Jacob's afraid... 00:06:02.46\00:06:03.89 he deceived his father... 00:06:03.93\00:06:05.33 he deceived his brother... 00:06:05.36\00:06:06.70 he's been separated for 20 years... 00:06:06.73\00:06:08.06 he knows he's coming back... 00:06:08.13\00:06:09.46 he knows that he's walking into a trial 00:06:09.50\00:06:12.47 and we pick up the story in Genesis chapter 32. 00:06:12.50\00:06:16.07 I believe that Genesis 32 is the turning point 00:06:16.10\00:06:19.47 in Jacob's life. 00:06:19.51\00:06:20.88 Before this time we see that he's really a bargainer with God 00:06:20.91\00:06:23.71 is he not? 00:06:23.75\00:06:25.08 We see that when he was at Bethel, what did he say? 00:06:25.11\00:06:26.85 "If You are with me, then I will do this... " 00:06:26.88\00:06:31.55 one of those conditional... if... then statements. 00:06:31.59\00:06:34.26 We see he's bargaining with God... 00:06:34.32\00:06:36.06 we see his nature of deception come forward 00:06:36.09\00:06:38.26 but here in Genesis chapter 32, 00:06:38.29\00:06:41.50 we see a pivotal shift or change in Jacob's life 00:06:41.53\00:06:45.73 and in his character. 00:06:45.77\00:06:47.34 So, let's look at those five steps for the setup. 00:06:47.37\00:06:50.01 First is the promise of peace. 00:06:50.04\00:06:52.24 Jacob, first of all, tries to send messengers of peace. 00:06:52.27\00:06:55.61 He has wealth... 00:06:55.64\00:06:57.21 he has flocks... he has servants... 00:06:57.25\00:06:58.75 he has herds and he's seeking favor as it were... with Esau. 00:06:58.78\00:07:02.98 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:07:03.02\00:07:04.35 Jill: But what is the response? 00:07:04.39\00:07:05.72 We see that in Genesis 32 verse 6, 00:07:05.75\00:07:07.32 the messengers returned and what do they say? 00:07:07.42\00:07:09.96 "We came to your brother Esau, 00:07:09.99\00:07:11.53 and he is coming to meet you, 00:07:11.56\00:07:13.06 and four hundred men... " Ryan, "are with him as well. " 00:07:13.09\00:07:17.00 So, Jacob goes into Step Number 2 in this setup 00:07:17.03\00:07:21.40 and he prepares for battle. 00:07:21.44\00:07:22.97 He kind of strategizes. 00:07:23.00\00:07:24.47 How am I going to save my family? 00:07:24.51\00:07:25.84 What am I going to do to save my family? 00:07:25.87\00:07:27.21 And he divides them into two groups, does he not? 00:07:27.24\00:07:29.71 he says, "The people... the flocks... the herds... 00:07:29.74\00:07:32.25 separate them into two groups because if he gets one group, 00:07:32.28\00:07:35.05 perhaps the other group will escape. " 00:07:35.08\00:07:37.72 Then we come to the central point of this five-step process, 00:07:37.75\00:07:41.02 I think it's the most important and it's the prayer. 00:07:41.06\00:07:42.86 It's the prayer for deliverance 00:07:42.89\00:07:45.13 and if you analyze the structure of the prayer, 00:07:45.19\00:07:48.53 it goes like this: A... B... C... A... 00:07:48.56\00:07:53.34 it comes right back to A. 00:07:53.37\00:07:55.40 Now, A... Jacob reminds God of God's promise. 00:07:55.44\00:08:00.14 We see that in Genesis 32 verse 9, 00:08:00.18\00:08:02.61 Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham 00:08:02.64\00:08:06.08 and God of my father Isaac, 00:08:06.11\00:08:07.52 the Lord who said to me, 00:08:07.55\00:08:08.88 'Return to your country and to your family, 00:08:08.92\00:08:10.85 and I will deal well with you... '" 00:08:10.89\00:08:12.75 so, what is he doing? 00:08:12.79\00:08:14.12 He's praying the word back to God... 00:08:14.16\00:08:15.49 he's reminding God, "This is what You promised... 00:08:15.52\00:08:18.23 this is what you promised to my daddy 00:08:18.26\00:08:20.00 and this is what you promised to my granddaddy. " 00:08:20.03\00:08:23.00 He's reminding God of the promise in his Word. 00:08:23.03\00:08:25.93 That's A... then we get to B... 00:08:26.00\00:08:28.30 Jacob acknowledges his need of God. 00:08:28.34\00:08:30.64 That's the next verse... verse 10, 00:08:30.67\00:08:33.07 "I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies 00:08:33.11\00:08:36.61 and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant... " 00:08:36.64\00:08:39.81 we see Jacob has stopped bargaining with God 00:08:39.85\00:08:43.12 and he recognizes his need. 00:08:43.18\00:08:44.79 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:08:44.82\00:08:46.15 "I'm not worthy... I need You. " 00:08:46.19\00:08:48.19 Then we come to the "C" portion of the prayer, 00:08:48.22\00:08:51.23 this is the next verse, 00:08:51.26\00:08:52.59 Jacob is honest with God about his fears 00:08:52.63\00:08:55.60 and about the stuff he's struggling with. 00:08:55.63\00:08:57.00 Verse 11, "Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, 00:08:57.03\00:09:01.10 from the hand of Esau; 00:09:01.14\00:09:02.47 for I fear him, 00:09:02.50\00:09:03.87 lest he come and attack me and the mother with the children. " 00:09:03.91\00:09:08.14 You know, God already knows your heart, 00:09:08.18\00:09:10.01 sometimes we think we've got to be so strong in prayer, 00:09:10.05\00:09:12.08 we got to... when we come to God, 00:09:12.11\00:09:13.65 "Okay God, I got it together. " 00:09:13.68\00:09:15.82 No... God knows you are afraid 00:09:15.88\00:09:17.22 or God knows you're angry 00:09:17.25\00:09:18.59 or God knows you're frustrated... 00:09:18.62\00:09:19.95 or He knows whatever you're dealing with. 00:09:19.99\00:09:21.72 Be honest with Him. 00:09:21.76\00:09:23.12 Now the prayer... remember was A... B... C... 00:09:23.16\00:09:25.06 we come back to A... 00:09:25.09\00:09:26.43 because at the very end of the prayer, 00:09:26.46\00:09:27.93 Jacob reminds God again of His promise. 00:09:27.96\00:09:29.70 We're in verse 12, 00:09:29.73\00:09:31.07 "For You said, 'I will surely treat you well, 00:09:31.10\00:09:33.57 and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, 00:09:33.60\00:09:35.80 which cannot be numbered for multitude. '" 00:09:35.84\00:09:38.54 So, it's like a saying which on both ends 00:09:38.57\00:09:40.64 he prays the word back to God. 00:09:40.68\00:09:44.21 Panel: Right. 00:09:44.25\00:09:45.58 Jill: Step Number 4... 00:09:45.61\00:09:46.95 we see the presents that he gives to pacify Esau... 00:09:46.98\00:09:48.92 we won't get into it but it was incredibly generous, 00:09:48.95\00:09:51.49 all these animals and flocks and herds that he sent. 00:09:51.55\00:09:54.06 And then, we see Number 5... 00:09:54.09\00:09:56.16 the preparation for protection. 00:09:56.19\00:09:58.19 Jacob sent his two wives... the female servants... 00:09:58.23\00:10:01.60 the concubines... the 11 sons over the ford of Jabbok. 00:10:01.63\00:10:04.93 Is that how you pronounce it? 00:10:04.97\00:10:06.60 He sent them over for their protection 00:10:06.63\00:10:08.30 but Jacob remained alone on that side of the river 00:10:08.37\00:10:12.24 and now we see the wrestling with God on verse 24, 00:10:12.27\00:10:16.14 Genesis 32 verse 24, 00:10:16.18\00:10:17.98 "Jacob was left alone; 00:10:18.01\00:10:19.81 and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. " 00:10:19.85\00:10:24.52 Who was this Man? 00:10:24.55\00:10:25.89 Hosea 12 says it was the Angel... 00:10:25.92\00:10:28.02 Joshua 5 says... it was the Commander of the LORD's army. 00:10:28.06\00:10:31.36 Daniel 10 refers to it as the the Heavenly Priest Michael. 00:10:31.39\00:10:34.66 Jacob later says, "I have seen God face to face 00:10:34.70\00:10:38.43 and my life has been preserved. " 00:10:38.47\00:10:41.14 This is none other than the Pre-Incarnate Son of God. 00:10:41.17\00:10:45.27 Takeaway Number 1: When you reach the end of your humanity, 00:10:45.31\00:10:49.81 God is there. 00:10:49.84\00:10:52.01 At our weakest point, God shows up. 00:10:52.05\00:10:55.72 Takeaway Number 2: I think this is significant. 00:10:55.75\00:10:58.15 God initiated the struggle. 00:10:58.19\00:11:00.12 You notice, it doesn't say, "Jacob was left alone 00:11:00.16\00:11:02.19 and he ran up to this Man... God 00:11:02.22\00:11:03.83 and started wrestling with Him. " 00:11:03.86\00:11:06.19 It said, "Man wrestled with him. " 00:11:06.26\00:11:08.26 There was a purpose in the wrestling 00:11:08.30\00:11:10.27 so that he could reach the end of his humanity... 00:11:10.30\00:11:13.94 he could realize his need for God... 00:11:13.97\00:11:16.20 his need for dependence on God. 00:11:16.24\00:11:19.04 It was for his character growth... 00:11:19.07\00:11:20.71 it was for his redemption and salvation. 00:11:20.74\00:11:23.68 Verses 25 and 26, 00:11:23.71\00:11:25.81 "Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, 00:11:25.88\00:11:28.62 He touched the socket of his hip; 00:11:28.65\00:11:30.32 and the socket of Jacob's hip was out of joint 00:11:30.39\00:11:33.09 as He wrestled with him. 00:11:33.12\00:11:34.46 And He said, 'Let Me go, for the day breaks. ' 00:11:34.49\00:11:38.03 But he said... " this is Jacob... 00:11:38.06\00:11:40.20 "I will not let You go unless You bless me!" 00:11:40.23\00:11:45.93 Takeaway Number 3: 00:11:45.97\00:11:48.57 Your opponent is not always who you think. 00:11:48.60\00:11:51.17 He could have thought his opponent was Esau. 00:11:51.24\00:11:53.78 Esau was coming against him 00:11:53.81\00:11:55.31 and he's terrified of his brother... 00:11:55.34\00:11:56.85 he's coming with 400 men... 00:11:56.88\00:11:58.58 Esau was not the barrier to entering the Promised Land. 00:11:58.61\00:12:01.58 Esau was not the barrier to entering Canaan. 00:12:01.62\00:12:03.92 Jacob's opponent was himself. 00:12:03.95\00:12:06.05 By trickery and treachery... 00:12:06.09\00:12:08.02 by cunning and deceit... 00:12:08.06\00:12:09.96 Jacob had sought to obtain spiritual blessings 00:12:09.99\00:12:13.60 through carnal means 00:12:13.63\00:12:14.96 and God was about ready to strip all of that away 00:12:15.00\00:12:18.93 and show him his true heart and his need of God. 00:12:18.97\00:12:22.47 Takeaway Number 4: 00:12:22.50\00:12:23.91 God touches our strengths to show us how much we need Him. 00:12:23.97\00:12:28.68 Often we think we're attacked at the point of our weakest point, 00:12:28.71\00:12:32.05 you think about it... in wrestling the hips and legs 00:12:32.08\00:12:35.78 is where a lot of the strength would lie 00:12:35.82\00:12:38.49 and He was touched in the hip. 00:12:38.52\00:12:41.46 What does that mean? 00:12:41.49\00:12:42.92 Often it's our strengths that keep us from surrender. 00:12:42.96\00:12:45.73 Often it's our strengths that keep us from obedience 00:12:45.76\00:12:48.50 because we think, "I got it together... 00:12:48.53\00:12:49.86 I can do it myself. " 00:12:49.90\00:12:51.73 But it's in our point of strength 00:12:51.80\00:12:53.74 where God needs to show us we're even weak 00:12:53.77\00:12:55.84 where we thought we were strong. 00:12:55.87\00:12:57.61 Takeaway Number 5: 00:12:57.64\00:12:58.97 Victory is obtained through recognition of yourself 00:12:59.01\00:13:02.41 in your insufficiencies... 00:13:02.44\00:13:03.78 through the recognition of who your God is 00:13:03.81\00:13:06.61 and your willingness to hang everything on His Word 00:13:06.65\00:13:10.65 and His promise. 00:13:10.69\00:13:12.02 God's blessings are obtained when we cling to Him 00:13:12.05\00:13:15.89 in helpless obedience 00:13:15.92\00:13:18.96 and we say, "I will not let You go 00:13:18.99\00:13:20.90 unless You bless me. " 00:13:20.93\00:13:23.50 And then He says, "What is your name?" 00:13:23.53\00:13:25.47 And Jacob said, "My name is Jacob. " 00:13:25.50\00:13:28.40 I think stating of his name coincides with his recognition. 00:13:28.44\00:13:31.81 "Well, I'm the deceiver... 00:13:31.84\00:13:33.31 I was that guy. " 00:13:33.38\00:13:34.94 He recognized... acknowledged his sin, 00:13:34.98\00:13:37.61 that's Takeaway Number 6 00:13:37.65\00:13:38.98 and finally, Takeaway Number 7: 00:13:39.01\00:13:40.45 Allow God to change you. 00:13:40.48\00:13:42.15 What did God do? "Your name is no longer Jacob... 00:13:42.18\00:13:44.19 your name is no longer the deceiver... 00:13:44.22\00:13:46.72 your name is now Israel. " 00:13:46.76\00:13:48.82 Changing name recognized change of ownership 00:13:48.86\00:13:53.56 and change of the person's character and destiny. 00:13:53.60\00:13:57.47 Jacob has finally reached the point where he is ready 00:13:57.50\00:14:01.34 to be changed 00:14:01.37\00:14:02.70 and that's where our God can show up. 00:14:02.74\00:14:05.11 Panel: Amen... wow! amen... 00:14:05.14\00:14:06.88 James: Powerful... 00:14:06.94\00:14:08.31 that was a great setup for the brothers meet 00:14:08.34\00:14:11.41 which is Monday's lesson, my name is James Rafferty 00:14:11.45\00:14:14.88 and we're going to be looking at Genesis chapter... 00:14:14.92\00:14:18.35 what chapter are we looking at here? 00:14:18.39\00:14:21.06 Genesis 33 verses 1 through 20, thank you. 00:14:21.09\00:14:24.43 Genesis 33 verse 1 through 20 00:14:24.46\00:14:26.13 and we have here the outworking of everything 00:14:26.16\00:14:29.80 that Jill has just shared with us. 00:14:29.83\00:14:31.43 We have the outworking of this preparation that Jacob makes 00:14:31.47\00:14:35.94 to meet his brother 00:14:35.97\00:14:37.91 and as he makes this preparation 00:14:37.97\00:14:39.81 and he gains this victory over himself 00:14:39.84\00:14:43.24 through the wrestling with Christ... 00:14:43.28\00:14:46.65 the wrestling with the Angel. 00:14:46.68\00:14:48.02 Everything else falls into place and that's... 00:14:48.05\00:14:51.52 that's what the Bible teaches us about this journey 00:14:51.55\00:14:54.99 that we're all... this journey of salvation 00:14:55.02\00:14:56.49 that when self is dethroned... 00:14:56.52\00:14:58.53 when self is defeated... 00:14:58.56\00:14:59.89 when self is surrendered, 00:14:59.93\00:15:01.26 everything else falls into place 00:15:01.30\00:15:02.73 and a lot of times, we wrestle with sin 00:15:02.76\00:15:05.47 and we wrestle with temptation with self all our life 00:15:05.50\00:15:09.70 and that's why it's such a struggle 00:15:09.74\00:15:11.47 because, you know, self just wants all of that 00:15:11.51\00:15:14.04 but once self is dethroned, 00:15:14.08\00:15:15.51 there's... there's no struggle with sin... 00:15:15.54\00:15:17.91 where there's no struggle with temptation 00:15:17.95\00:15:20.28 because it's clamoring after someone who is gone... 00:15:20.32\00:15:23.12 who's dead... someone who isn't answering the door 00:15:23.15\00:15:25.92 so, Jacob... we pick the story up here 00:15:25.95\00:15:29.22 in Genesis chapter 33 and verse 1, 00:15:29.26\00:15:32.43 "Jacob lifted up His eyes and he looked, 00:15:32.46\00:15:34.53 and behold Esau came 00:15:34.56\00:15:36.23 and with him four hundred men. 00:15:36.26\00:15:38.73 And he divided the children unto Leah and unto Rachel, 00:15:38.77\00:15:42.24 and the two handmaids. " 00:15:42.27\00:15:44.31 So, Jacob was going now from a place where 00:15:44.34\00:15:47.04 he sees the face of God... that's Genesis 32 verse 30. 00:15:47.08\00:15:51.01 Peniel... the place where he had this experience with God, 00:15:51.05\00:15:54.95 Jacob moves now to meet his brother 00:15:54.98\00:15:57.05 and, you know, there's been 20 years of separation 00:15:57.09\00:16:00.62 and when Jacob sees him coming with 400 men, 00:16:00.66\00:16:04.49 you can imagine, Jacob is worried 00:16:04.53\00:16:05.89 because the last thing that he remembers with 00:16:05.93\00:16:08.46 his relationship with his brother was: 00:16:08.50\00:16:09.96 fleeing for his life. 00:16:10.00\00:16:11.33 His brother had promised... "I'm going to take you out... " 00:16:11.37\00:16:14.70 and so, he prepares himself and his family... 00:16:14.74\00:16:16.84 he starts dividing them up... he divides children... 00:16:16.87\00:16:19.74 the children unto Leah... and the children unto Rachel 00:16:19.77\00:16:22.61 and unto the two handmaids, verse 2 00:16:22.64\00:16:24.71 and he put the handmaids and the children foremost... 00:16:24.78\00:16:28.58 that is... there's a succession here 00:16:28.62\00:16:33.22 that is kind of revealing to us. 00:16:33.25\00:16:35.16 I mean, when I think about our humanity, you know, 00:16:35.19\00:16:38.49 we think about... I don't know... 00:16:38.53\00:16:41.16 the best way to illustrate this might be 00:16:41.23\00:16:43.43 when I used to eat my food, 00:16:43.47\00:16:46.74 I would always save the best for last. 00:16:46.77\00:16:48.30 Panel: Laughter. 00:16:48.34\00:16:49.67 James: So, my mom would give me vegetables, you know, 00:16:49.70\00:16:51.61 and when I've got the vegetables on my plate, 00:16:51.64\00:16:53.81 you know, I tried a few times to feed them to the dog 00:16:53.84\00:16:56.18 under the table but that didn't work 00:16:56.24\00:16:57.98 because the dog didn't like them either 00:16:58.01\00:16:59.35 and so they ended up on the floor 00:16:59.38\00:17:00.72 and my Mom was really upset then, right. 00:17:00.75\00:17:02.55 So, I would try to eat all the vegetables first 00:17:02.58\00:17:04.95 and then, hopefully, you know, I could eat the rest of the meal 00:17:04.99\00:17:07.92 and that would take the taste of the vegetables 00:17:07.96\00:17:09.62 out of my mouth... save the best for last... 00:17:09.69\00:17:11.93 it seems like that's what Jacob is doing here. 00:17:11.96\00:17:13.93 He puts the handmaids and their children foremost in the front 00:17:13.96\00:17:16.90 Leah and her children... 00:17:16.93\00:17:18.27 remember, Leah wasn't his love as Rachel... 00:17:18.30\00:17:20.34 Leah and her children after the handmaids... 00:17:20.37\00:17:23.00 and then Rachel and Joseph at the very end 00:17:23.04\00:17:25.67 like the best for last... 00:17:25.71\00:17:27.04 like, "I want to protect them the best... " 00:17:27.08\00:17:28.88 and he passes over before them. 00:17:28.91\00:17:32.75 Now, that's to me... that's the redemption. 00:17:32.81\00:17:35.92 We just talked about how he wrestled with the angel 00:17:35.95\00:17:38.25 and he prevailed and he... he's become Israel now, 00:17:38.29\00:17:40.56 so, yes, we've got the handmaids and the children in front 00:17:40.59\00:17:43.73 and yes, we've got Leah next 00:17:43.76\00:17:45.19 and yes, we've got Rachel and Joseph behind... but guess what? 00:17:45.23\00:17:48.43 Jacob goes in front of all of them. 00:17:48.46\00:17:50.33 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:17:50.37\00:17:51.70 James: Jacob's in front of all of them 00:17:51.73\00:17:53.07 and this is a picture, really, if you will... of Christ. 00:17:53.10\00:17:56.40 Christ has placed Himself in front of all of humanity 00:17:56.44\00:18:00.04 and He has taken the wrath of the enemy, 00:18:00.08\00:18:02.24 the wrath that really belongs to us... 00:18:02.28\00:18:04.21 the wrath that we really deserve... 00:18:04.25\00:18:06.11 He's taking that on... He's taking that on first. 00:18:06.15\00:18:08.45 He's going to confront that first 00:18:08.48\00:18:10.35 and what's really amazing and we see this in the story 00:18:10.39\00:18:13.42 because the great illustration is... 00:18:13.46\00:18:15.39 Christ takes on the wrath of our enemy 00:18:15.42\00:18:17.33 and there's nothing left for the rest of us. 00:18:17.36\00:18:19.19 Panel: Hmmm... James: In other words, 00:18:19.23\00:18:20.56 Christ has taken out the second death for us 00:18:20.60\00:18:23.57 and those that trust in Christ will not be hurt, the Bible says 00:18:23.60\00:18:27.07 in the book of Revelation, 00:18:27.10\00:18:28.44 we'll not be part of the second death. 00:18:28.47\00:18:30.31 So, you see an analogy here... 00:18:30.34\00:18:31.91 you see a picture here of the plan of salvation 00:18:31.94\00:18:33.61 and you see Jacob putting himself in front of all of them, 00:18:33.64\00:18:36.91 he passed over before them 00:18:36.95\00:18:38.41 and he bows himself to the ground. 00:18:38.45\00:18:40.48 The Bible says that Jesus Christ humbled himself 00:18:40.52\00:18:45.05 in Philippians chapter 2, it says, 00:18:45.09\00:18:46.45 "He bowed himself to the ground seven times... " 00:18:46.49\00:18:49.16 and if you follow Hebrews chapter 2 very carefully, 00:18:49.19\00:18:51.83 you're going to find seven steps of Christ humbling Himself 00:18:51.86\00:18:57.03 down to the point of dying the death... 00:18:57.07\00:18:58.87 even the death of the cross. 00:18:58.90\00:19:01.30 So the type is here in Jacob. 00:19:01.34\00:19:03.67 He bows himself to the ground seven times 00:19:03.71\00:19:05.74 until he came near unto his brother. 00:19:05.77\00:19:07.74 So, Jesus came to this earth... He humbled Himself... 00:19:07.78\00:19:10.61 He came near to us... 00:19:10.65\00:19:11.98 He became one with the human family 00:19:12.01\00:19:13.35 and what happens? 00:19:13.38\00:19:14.72 Esau ran to meet him... embraced him... 00:19:14.75\00:19:18.05 fell on his neck and kissed him and they wept. 00:19:18.09\00:19:20.76 Hello, prodigal son... the return of the prodigal son. 00:19:20.79\00:19:24.53 So, you see here in the picture of Jacob and Esau, 00:19:24.56\00:19:27.83 you see again this picture of the plan of salvation. 00:19:27.86\00:19:31.43 You see the humility of Jesus Christ in our behalf 00:19:31.47\00:19:35.00 to protect us... to redeem us 00:19:35.04\00:19:36.37 and then you see the response of the enemy of Jacob 00:19:36.40\00:19:39.67 or the enemy of humanity, 00:19:39.71\00:19:41.14 you see that our enemies can be reconciled to us 00:19:41.18\00:19:43.85 as we humble ourselves 00:19:43.88\00:19:45.21 and reveal the character and the spirit and the grace 00:19:45.25\00:19:47.42 of Jesus Christ 00:19:47.45\00:19:48.98 and of course, this picture of the prodigal son is beautiful 00:19:49.02\00:19:51.65 and so, verse 5, he lifts up his eyes 00:19:51.69\00:19:53.22 and he saw... this is Esau... 00:19:53.25\00:19:55.42 he saw the women and the children, and said, 00:19:55.46\00:19:57.16 "Who are those with thee?" 00:19:57.19\00:19:58.86 You know, because when Jacob left, he was by himself... 00:19:58.89\00:20:00.90 he was all alone, right. Panel: That's right. 00:20:00.93\00:20:02.26 "Who are those with thee?" 00:20:02.30\00:20:03.63 And he said, "The children which God has" 00:20:03.67\00:20:05.60 here's the word... you're ready for this? 00:20:05.63\00:20:07.70 "graciously given thy servant. " 00:20:07.74\00:20:10.11 Oh, man, if you remember our last lesson 00:20:10.14\00:20:12.77 and you want to read Genesis chapter 29 and chapter 30, 00:20:12.81\00:20:16.04 it was anything but gracious, in a sense. 00:20:16.08\00:20:18.35 I mean, all the bickering and the envy 00:20:18.38\00:20:20.52 and the jealousy and the hate that was going on there 00:20:20.55\00:20:22.68 between Leah and Rachel, you know, 00:20:22.72\00:20:24.42 and then, the handmaids come in to her 00:20:24.45\00:20:26.12 because we don't want to be outdone by one of the others 00:20:26.15\00:20:29.12 and yet Jacob here in his converted transformed state says 00:20:29.16\00:20:32.26 "These are the children which God has graciously given... " 00:20:32.29\00:20:35.06 because in spite of the envy... in spite of the jealousy, 00:20:35.10\00:20:37.83 God came down and He blessed... 00:20:37.87\00:20:39.33 He blessed Leah and He blessed Rachel 00:20:39.37\00:20:42.07 and He blessed Bilhah... He blessed the handmaids... 00:20:42.10\00:20:44.77 God blesses humanity even in our dysfunction... 00:20:44.81\00:20:47.94 even in our failures. 00:20:47.98\00:20:49.64 "Then the handmaids came near, 00:20:49.68\00:20:51.51 and they and their children, they bowed themselves. 00:20:51.55\00:20:53.42 And Leah also with her children came near, 00:20:53.45\00:20:54.88 and they bowed themselves: 00:20:54.92\00:20:56.25 and after came Joseph near and Rachel, 00:20:56.28\00:20:58.25 and they bowed themselves. 00:20:58.29\00:20:59.62 And he said, 'What meanest thee this 00:20:59.65\00:21:00.99 by all that drove which I met?' 00:21:01.02\00:21:02.36 And he said, 00:21:02.39\00:21:03.73 'I've sent these to find grace in thy sight my lord. '" 00:21:03.76\00:21:06.13 This is amazing how Jacob is relating to Esau 00:21:06.16\00:21:09.26 and he says, "I have enough... I have enough, my brother, 00:21:09.30\00:21:11.73 keep that thou hast unto thyself. ' 00:21:11.77\00:21:13.10 And Jacob said, 'No, no, I pray you, 00:21:13.13\00:21:14.90 if I found grace in thy sight, 00:21:14.94\00:21:17.27 then receive my present at my hand: 00:21:17.31\00:21:19.84 for therefore I have seen thy face, 00:21:19.87\00:21:21.88 as though I had seen the face of God. '" 00:21:21.91\00:21:25.41 Now, this is a really powerful point right here 00:21:25.45\00:21:27.95 and even the rest of the... the outline here, 00:21:27.98\00:21:30.59 we're not going to go through it all, 00:21:30.62\00:21:31.95 just grace... grace... grace all the way through it. 00:21:31.99\00:21:34.39 But the Quarterly brings out an important point here 00:21:34.42\00:21:37.09 that I think we should really focus on 00:21:37.13\00:21:38.63 in its application to the plan of salvation. 00:21:38.66\00:21:41.20 Jacob bows himself seven times before his brother, 00:21:41.23\00:21:43.23 whom He calls several times: my lord... 00:21:43.26\00:21:45.80 and identifies himself as his servant. 00:21:45.83\00:21:48.14 Significantly, Jacob's "seven bows" 00:21:48.17\00:21:50.64 echo his father's "seven blessings" 00:21:50.71\00:21:52.77 which he had received, you know, 00:21:52.81\00:21:54.84 in Esau's place, 00:21:54.88\00:21:56.38 and furthermore, when he bows, 00:21:56.44\00:21:58.21 he specifically reverses his father's blessings 00:21:58.25\00:22:01.08 about the nations bowing to you. 00:22:01.12\00:22:02.82 So, it's as though Jacob is returning to Esau 00:22:02.88\00:22:06.12 the blessings that he deceived and took and stole from Esau 00:22:06.15\00:22:10.16 and he is reversing the blessing or the statement that was... 00:22:10.19\00:22:14.00 "nations will bow to you... " 00:22:14.03\00:22:15.36 he's bowing to Esau. 00:22:15.40\00:22:16.73 Jacob is bowing to Esau. 00:22:16.77\00:22:18.87 It's as if Jacob's intention 00:22:18.90\00:22:20.94 was to pay his debt to his brother 00:22:20.97\00:22:23.30 to return the blessing he had stolen from him. 00:22:23.34\00:22:25.64 So, when Esau saw his brother against all expectations, 00:22:25.67\00:22:29.38 he ran to Jacob and instead of killing him, 00:22:29.41\00:22:31.81 he kissed him and they wept. 00:22:31.85\00:22:34.12 Panel: Hmmm... yeah. 00:22:34.15\00:22:35.48 James: This is the power of grace... 00:22:35.52\00:22:36.85 this is the power of reconciliation 00:22:36.89\00:22:38.32 and then later Jacob comments and says, 00:22:38.35\00:22:39.99 "I have seen your face 00:22:40.02\00:22:41.59 as though I had seen the face of God. " 00:22:41.62\00:22:43.06 Now, I'm just going to be honest with you, 00:22:43.09\00:22:44.43 I struggled with this. 00:22:44.46\00:22:45.79 "What... what do you mean by Esau is the face of God? 00:22:45.83\00:22:47.46 Jacob, are you going a little bit overboard here, 00:22:47.50\00:22:49.33 I mean, aren't you really trying a little bit too hard here 00:22:49.36\00:22:51.47 to appease?" Right? 00:22:51.50\00:22:52.87 But notice, the point the Quarterly makes 00:22:52.90\00:22:56.04 and I think it's so good... 00:22:56.07\00:22:57.41 the reason for Jacob's extraordinary statement is 00:22:57.44\00:22:59.81 his understanding that Esau had forgiven him. 00:22:59.84\00:23:02.68 Panel: Hmmm... amen. 00:23:02.74\00:23:04.08 James: The Hebrew word "ratsah... " pleased 00:23:04.11\00:23:06.31 is a theological term referring to any sacrifice 00:23:06.35\00:23:09.35 that is pleasing or accepted by God 00:23:09.38\00:23:11.49 which then implies divine forgiveness. 00:23:11.52\00:23:13.05 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:23:13.09\00:23:14.49 James: So, Jacob was saying, 00:23:14.52\00:23:16.69 "I see your face as I see the face of the Lord... " 00:23:16.73\00:23:19.03 because he had already experienced the forgiveness 00:23:19.06\00:23:20.96 of the Lord. Panel: Right... hmmm... 00:23:21.00\00:23:23.16 James: And because Esau had ran to him 00:23:23.20\00:23:25.57 and fall upon his neck and kissed him, 00:23:25.60\00:23:27.90 he was experiencing the forgiveness of Esau 00:23:27.94\00:23:30.41 and he says, "This is just like the experience I had 00:23:30.44\00:23:32.94 with the Lord and so, I see you as I see the Lord... " 00:23:32.97\00:23:35.44 and Friends, really that's the bottom line for each one of us. 00:23:35.48\00:23:38.18 God wants to be so gracious to us 00:23:38.21\00:23:41.45 and touch our hearts with such power and love 00:23:41.48\00:23:45.22 that people who see us 00:23:45.25\00:23:46.96 especially people who perhaps are afraid of us... 00:23:47.02\00:23:50.06 afraid because they've mistreated us 00:23:50.09\00:23:53.76 would see in us the forgiveness of God. 00:23:53.80\00:23:56.50 That's why we're here on this earth, 00:23:56.56\00:23:58.90 that's the purpose... 00:23:58.93\00:24:00.27 that's the... the commission of the church of Christ 00:24:00.30\00:24:03.37 is to through us 00:24:03.41\00:24:04.81 reveal God's goodness and God's grace and God's forgiveness. 00:24:04.84\00:24:07.21 Panel: Amen... Jill: I love that Pastor James, 00:24:07.24\00:24:09.54 it's powerful... forgiveness... healing and reconciliation. 00:24:09.58\00:24:12.41 Don't go away, we have so much more for you, 00:24:12.45\00:24:14.42 we'll be right back. 00:24:14.45\00:24:15.78 Music... 00:24:15.82\00:24:21.12 Ever wish you could watch a 3ABN Sabbath School Panel again 00:24:21.16\00:24:24.49 or share it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? 00:24:24.53\00:24:27.90 Well, you can by visiting: 3abnsabbathschoolpanel. com 00:24:27.93\00:24:32.63 A clean design makes it easy 00:24:32.67\00:24:35.27 to find the program you are looking for. 00:24:35.30\00:24:37.27 There are also links to the Adult Bible Study Guide 00:24:37.31\00:24:40.84 so you can follow along. 00:24:40.88\00:24:42.31 Sharing is easy... 00:24:42.34\00:24:43.85 just click "Share" and choose your favorite Social Media. 00:24:43.88\00:24:47.02 Share a Link... Save a Life for Eternity. 00:24:47.05\00:24:50.42 Jill: Welcome back to our study of Jacob turned into Israel 00:24:50.45\00:24:56.66 and we're going to kick it over to Pastor John Lomacang 00:24:56.69\00:24:58.96 and Tuesday's Lesson. 00:24:58.99\00:25:00.33 Lomacang: Wow! one of the toughest chapters 00:25:00.36\00:25:01.80 in the book of Genesis is chapter 34. 00:25:01.83\00:25:03.73 We've talked about deceiving mothers... biased parents... 00:25:03.77\00:25:06.97 brothers who are hungry and willing to give up 00:25:07.00\00:25:10.34 what they could receive as a blessing from the father 00:25:10.37\00:25:14.58 to carry out throughout their generation. 00:25:14.61\00:25:16.98 We've... we've read about deception in the Garden of Eden, 00:25:17.01\00:25:19.51 Adam and Eve being deceived. 00:25:19.55\00:25:21.15 Now, we come to a... a part of the story and I think 00:25:21.18\00:25:23.99 there's a question that you asked earlier Jill, 00:25:24.02\00:25:26.12 that really shows 00:25:26.15\00:25:27.49 and I think one of the reasons that I can cite 00:25:27.52\00:25:30.49 that the Bible is not written by man, 00:25:30.53\00:25:33.50 is... it points out the worst in us. 00:25:33.53\00:25:36.00 Panel: Hmmm... 00:25:36.03\00:25:37.40 Lomacang: It points out the worst in us 00:25:37.43\00:25:39.43 so that we can see the best in Christ. 00:25:39.47\00:25:40.80 Jill: Amen. 00:25:40.84\00:25:42.47 Lomacang: And so, if you would ask yourself the question: 00:25:42.50\00:25:44.77 Is there anything about us that's good? 00:25:44.81\00:25:46.94 Foof... just read Genesis... 00:25:46.98\00:25:48.54 you don't have to read the rest of the Bible. 00:25:48.58\00:25:50.11 Panel: Laughter. 00:25:50.15\00:25:51.48 Lomacang: Just Genesis established a cadence that 00:25:51.51\00:25:53.42 the heart is deceitful above all things 00:25:53.48\00:25:57.19 and desperately wicked 00:25:57.22\00:25:59.25 and then it ends with a question... who can know it? 00:25:59.29\00:26:02.02 And so, this is one of those stories that... 00:26:02.06\00:26:03.96 it starts out by the land where... where Jacob settles 00:26:03.99\00:26:08.90 and he settles among a people that he doesn't know as well... 00:26:08.96\00:26:13.07 they're not committed to God 00:26:13.10\00:26:14.50 and it's a people based on what we're going to read here 00:26:14.54\00:26:18.07 that have... that have no control 00:26:18.11\00:26:21.84 in this particular story. 00:26:21.88\00:26:24.25 Shechem has no control of his faculties 00:26:24.28\00:26:28.02 and he allows his eyes to cause his flesh to sin 00:26:28.05\00:26:32.09 and so, we're going to walk through this story 00:26:32.12\00:26:36.09 rather than just making points, 00:26:36.12\00:26:38.19 I want to walk through it specifically because... 00:26:38.23\00:26:40.10 and then I'll... at the very end of it 00:26:40.13\00:26:42.90 highlight Simeon and Levi. 00:26:42.96\00:26:46.07 But the violation of Dinah opens the door 00:26:46.10\00:26:50.41 to remind us that this is not a new sin. 00:26:50.44\00:26:54.11 Panel: Yeah. 00:26:54.14\00:26:55.71 Lomacang: This has been going on for millennia. 00:26:55.74\00:26:59.91 Men, unfortunately, exercise among many men, 00:26:59.95\00:27:04.05 looking at the beauty of a woman and thinking that because 00:27:04.09\00:27:08.09 she looks beautiful, that he could take her by force 00:27:08.12\00:27:12.59 and think that his actions are justified by his passions 00:27:12.63\00:27:16.70 and the Bible shows that 00:27:16.73\00:27:19.37 not only in this story will you see that 00:27:19.43\00:27:22.80 whatever you sow... you're going to reap. 00:27:22.84\00:27:26.07 But you'll also see the aspects of how God looks at humanity 00:27:26.11\00:27:30.98 that puts him or herself in this category. 00:27:31.01\00:27:34.38 Today, we have something in the world called: Human Trafficking 00:27:34.42\00:27:37.09 and it... and it falls in line with this kind of story. 00:27:37.15\00:27:40.19 Women being snatched and kidnapped 00:27:40.26\00:27:42.62 and sold around the world 00:27:42.66\00:27:44.16 and bartered as though they are piece of property 00:27:44.23\00:27:46.53 and you'll see in this story that God... 00:27:46.56\00:27:49.30 that at a time where... and I say this... 00:27:49.33\00:27:52.00 at a time where Jacob could have put his best foot forward, 00:27:52.03\00:27:55.24 it's kind of... I ask myself the question, 00:27:55.27\00:27:57.64 "Where was he when he could have done more?" 00:27:57.67\00:27:59.97 Ryan: Hmmm... Jill: Absolutely. 00:28:00.04\00:28:01.38 Lomacang: So, let's start with verse 1 to 6: 00:28:01.41\00:28:03.01 The Violation of Dinah. 00:28:03.04\00:28:04.38 We're going to walk through every verse in the story. 00:28:04.41\00:28:06.41 "Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, 00:28:06.48\00:28:10.52 whom she had borne to Jacob, 00:28:10.55\00:28:13.19 went out to see the daughters of the land. 00:28:13.22\00:28:16.42 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, 00:28:16.46\00:28:21.70 prince of the country, saw her, 00:28:21.73\00:28:23.97 he took her and lay with her, and violated her. 00:28:24.00\00:28:27.67 His soul was strongly attracted to Dinah 00:28:27.70\00:28:31.57 the daughter of Jacob... " 00:28:31.61\00:28:33.07 and this part is not Agape Love, this is carnal love. 00:28:33.11\00:28:37.88 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:28:37.91\00:28:39.25 Lomacang: "And he loved the young woman 00:28:39.28\00:28:40.75 and spoke kindly to the young woman. " 00:28:40.82\00:28:42.45 That was more of a... 00:28:42.48\00:28:43.82 that was more... not speaking to her respectfully, 00:28:43.85\00:28:46.49 but speaking to her suggestively... 00:28:46.52\00:28:50.13 yeah, he says, "You know... " 00:28:50.16\00:28:51.99 now-a-days in the city when you grow up in New York 00:28:52.03\00:28:54.73 rapping to her... "You know... how you doing... " 00:28:54.76\00:28:57.40 trying to find his way in which is a sad reality... 00:28:57.43\00:29:00.90 and it says... it goes on... 00:29:00.94\00:29:02.90 "So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, 00:29:02.94\00:29:06.98 'Get this young woman as a wife. ' 00:29:07.01\00:29:08.81 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter. 00:29:08.84\00:29:12.15 Now his sons were with his livestock in the field; 00:29:12.18\00:29:15.32 and Jacob held his peace until they came. 00:29:15.35\00:29:17.89 Then Hamor the father of Shechem 00:29:17.92\00:29:19.75 went out to Jacob to speak with him. " 00:29:19.79\00:29:22.12 Now, at this point, I should have said... 00:29:22.16\00:29:23.96 Jacob didn't have to wait till his sons came in. 00:29:24.03\00:29:26.06 As a father, he should have taken the lead right here 00:29:26.09\00:29:29.76 and called the sons and to say, 00:29:29.80\00:29:31.33 "Here's what happened to Dinah. 00:29:31.37\00:29:32.87 We need to take this matter into our hands 00:29:32.90\00:29:35.60 and approach this family about what just took place. " 00:29:35.64\00:29:38.44 But he waited... and I think that hesitation... to me... 00:29:38.47\00:29:41.24 he held his peace 00:29:41.28\00:29:42.61 and I don't understand the reason why he held his peace 00:29:42.64\00:29:45.28 but the Bible says... that's what he did. 00:29:45.31\00:29:47.12 But this next part which... 00:29:47.15\00:29:50.09 it shows me that we should not look at women 00:29:50.12\00:29:53.76 as comparable to property. Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:29:53.79\00:29:56.76 Lomacang: Because that's what this part says. 00:29:56.79\00:29:59.76 "If I could just give you some land... would this be okay? 00:29:59.79\00:30:02.73 I mean, I just raped your daughter... 00:30:02.76\00:30:04.43 I just raped Dinah... 00:30:04.47\00:30:05.97 if I... if I give you this part... would that be cool?" 00:30:06.00\00:30:08.67 So, look at this... it's a very... 00:30:08.70\00:30:10.04 it's a minimization of her value 00:30:10.07\00:30:11.41 and I want to say this... don't ever look at a woman 00:30:11.44\00:30:13.54 regardless of what you think about her, 00:30:13.58\00:30:15.48 don't ever look at a woman 00:30:15.51\00:30:16.91 as though her value is just comparable 00:30:16.95\00:30:18.85 to something that can be traded 00:30:18.88\00:30:20.55 for the violation of her body. 00:30:20.62\00:30:22.08 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:30:22.12\00:30:23.45 Lomacang: Verse 6 as well... it's a sad story, 00:30:23.49\00:30:24.82 "Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob 00:30:24.85\00:30:26.99 to speak to him. 00:30:27.02\00:30:28.36 And the sons of Jacob came in from the field 00:30:28.39\00:30:29.72 when they heard it; 00:30:29.76\00:30:31.19 and the men were grieved and very angry, 00:30:31.23\00:30:32.99 because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel 00:30:33.03\00:30:36.16 by lying with Jacob's daughter, 00:30:36.20\00:30:37.87 a thing which ought not to be done. 00:30:37.90\00:30:40.24 But Hamor spoke with them, saying, 00:30:40.27\00:30:42.70 'The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter. " 00:30:42.74\00:30:45.57 They're trying to... trying to fix it up. 00:30:45.61\00:30:47.68 "Please give her to him as a wife. " 00:30:47.71\00:30:49.94 Why... why couldn't you ask that before? 00:30:49.98\00:30:52.51 Panel: Hmmm... 00:30:52.55\00:30:54.38 Lomacang: "And make marriages with us; 00:30:54.42\00:30:55.82 give your daughters to us. " 00:30:55.85\00:30:57.85 Now, he's expanding... 00:30:57.89\00:30:59.29 "And take our daughters to yourselves. " 00:30:59.32\00:31:01.09 Sons of God... daughters of men. 00:31:01.12\00:31:02.46 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... hmmm... 00:31:02.49\00:31:03.86 "So you shall dwell with us, 00:31:03.89\00:31:05.23 and the land shall be before you. 00:31:05.26\00:31:06.83 Dwell and trade in it, 00:31:06.86\00:31:09.13 and acquire possessions for yourselves in it. 00:31:09.16\00:31:12.13 Then Shechem said to her father and her brothers, 00:31:12.17\00:31:14.97 'Let me find favor in your eyes, 00:31:15.00\00:31:16.94 and whatever you say to me I will give. 00:31:16.97\00:31:18.51 Ask me ever so much dowry and gift, 00:31:18.54\00:31:21.64 and I will give according to what you say to me; 00:31:21.68\00:31:23.65 but give me the young woman as a wife. " 00:31:23.68\00:31:26.72 In other words... "Whatever you want, you can have it 00:31:26.75\00:31:29.18 but I just want her. " Panel: Hmmm... 00:31:29.25\00:31:31.05 Lomacang: And this... this kind of... 00:31:31.09\00:31:32.85 rather than any repentive spirit even saying, 00:31:32.89\00:31:35.22 "You know, I am so repentant of what I did to your daughter. 00:31:35.26\00:31:39.76 What can I do to show my repentance?" 00:31:39.79\00:31:42.86 He just went on to just property exchange... 00:31:42.90\00:31:44.97 Panel: Right... right. Lomacang: Very sad 00:31:45.00\00:31:47.00 but look at the brothers. 00:31:47.04\00:31:48.37 Verses 13 to 24, 00:31:48.40\00:31:49.94 The frustration of Simeon and Levi. 00:31:49.97\00:31:51.94 "But the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father, 00:31:51.97\00:31:55.28 and spoke deceitfully, 00:31:55.31\00:31:57.65 because he had defiled Dinah his sister. 00:31:57.68\00:32:00.58 And they said to them, 00:32:00.62\00:32:02.12 'We cannot do this thing, 00:32:02.15\00:32:04.35 to give you our sister... 00:32:04.39\00:32:05.72 give our sister to the one who is uncircumcised, 00:32:05.75\00:32:08.66 for that would be a reproach to us. 00:32:08.69\00:32:10.96 But on this condition we will consent to you: 00:32:10.99\00:32:12.83 if you will become as we are, 00:32:12.86\00:32:14.63 if every male of you is circumcised, 00:32:14.66\00:32:16.73 then we will give our daughters to you, 00:32:16.77\00:32:18.67 and we will trade your daughters to us; 00:32:18.70\00:32:20.67 and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people. 00:32:20.70\00:32:23.30 But if you will not heed us and be circumcised, 00:32:23.34\00:32:28.61 then we will take our daughter and be gone. " 00:32:28.64\00:32:31.31 Now, I don't want to go through the rest of the story 00:32:31.35\00:32:33.21 but what they're in essence saying... 00:32:33.25\00:32:34.92 and they knew in their hearts 00:32:34.95\00:32:36.85 that this is not what they were going to do. 00:32:36.89\00:32:39.02 They... they had other plans. 00:32:39.05\00:32:40.39 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... hmmm... hmmm... 00:32:40.42\00:32:41.76 but they wanted to... they wanted to disseminate their... 00:32:41.79\00:32:45.06 their anger among the entire group of people 00:32:45.09\00:32:48.73 to cause them to go through these rituals 00:32:48.76\00:32:52.37 just to... in some sense... as a demeaning act 00:32:52.40\00:32:56.24 but they had no intention of allowing those actions 00:32:56.27\00:33:00.44 to become equal payment 00:33:00.48\00:33:01.91 for the violation of their sister 00:33:01.94\00:33:04.65 and then we find the vengeance of Simeon and Levi, 00:33:04.68\00:33:07.52 verses 26 to 29, 00:33:07.55\00:33:09.42 "And they ki... " 00:33:09.45\00:33:11.25 now, by the way, they... they followed all the requirements 00:33:11.29\00:33:14.29 but the Bible says in verse 26, 00:33:14.32\00:33:17.33 "And they killed Hamor and Shechem his son 00:33:17.36\00:33:19.86 with the edge of the sword, 00:33:19.89\00:33:21.23 and took Dinah from Shechem's house, and went out. 00:33:21.26\00:33:23.33 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, 00:33:23.37\00:33:28.07 and plundered the city, 00:33:28.10\00:33:29.77 because their sister had been defiled. 00:33:29.80\00:33:32.07 They took their sheep, their oxen, and their donkeys, 00:33:32.11\00:33:35.01 what was in the city and what was in the field, 00:33:35.04\00:33:38.45 and all their wealth. 00:33:38.48\00:33:39.81 And their little ones 00:33:39.85\00:33:41.18 and their wives they took captive; 00:33:41.22\00:33:43.08 and they plundered even all that was in the houses. " 00:33:43.12\00:33:47.16 Panel: Hmmm... 00:33:47.19\00:33:48.52 Lomacang: They said, "We're going to rape the city, 00:33:48.56\00:33:49.92 you did that to our sister, 00:33:49.96\00:33:51.93 this is the vengeance... " 00:33:51.96\00:33:53.73 and, you know, I don't agree with either side of that 00:33:53.76\00:33:56.20 but this act was so vengeful... 00:33:56.23\00:33:58.33 that's why you find later on in Genesis chapter 49, 00:33:58.37\00:34:00.60 that speaks of Simeon and Levi as instruments of cruelty... 00:34:00.64\00:34:04.07 Genesis 49 verse 5, 00:34:04.11\00:34:07.11 they were instruments of cruelty 00:34:07.14\00:34:08.48 but here's a part of the story that really bothered me. 00:34:08.51\00:34:11.35 It seemed as though Jacob just kind of... let it go... 00:34:11.38\00:34:14.32 because look at verses 30 and 31, 00:34:14.38\00:34:16.79 "Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, 00:34:16.82\00:34:19.19 'You have troubled me 00:34:19.22\00:34:20.66 by making me obnoxious among the inhabitants of the land, 00:34:20.69\00:34:23.73 among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; 00:34:23.76\00:34:25.49 and since I am few in number, 00:34:25.53\00:34:28.16 they will gather themselves together against me and kill me. 00:34:28.20\00:34:31.47 I shall be destroyed, my household and I.' 00:34:31.50\00:34:34.17 But they said, 'Should he treat our sister like a harlot?'" 00:34:34.20\00:34:37.31 That's what Jacob should have been saying. 00:34:37.34\00:34:39.57 He was more concerned about his reputation 00:34:39.61\00:34:41.74 when he should have been defending the reputation 00:34:41.78\00:34:43.98 of his daughter 00:34:44.01\00:34:45.35 and the sons... now I don't agree with their... 00:34:45.38\00:34:47.75 their murderous actions 00:34:47.78\00:34:49.52 but they had more compassion 00:34:49.55\00:34:51.79 for what had happened to their sister than Jacob did 00:34:51.82\00:34:55.76 and I'll give my closing comments 00:34:55.79\00:34:57.46 on the last two minutes... what a story! 00:34:57.49\00:35:00.23 That is the reality that the Bible shows... 00:35:00.26\00:35:02.96 even the darker side of humanity. 00:35:03.00\00:35:05.07 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... wow... wow! 00:35:05.10\00:35:07.17 Ryan: Oooooh oooo... almost need a moment just to... 00:35:07.20\00:35:09.44 just to get my thoughts together after that, 00:35:09.47\00:35:11.54 that's a... it's one of those stories... 00:35:11.57\00:35:13.58 it's hard to take in but... but praise the Lord, 00:35:13.61\00:35:16.34 we serve a gracious God 00:35:16.38\00:35:17.71 that even beyond our darkness and our frailties and... 00:35:17.75\00:35:21.78 and our mishaps and all of our issues that we have, 00:35:21.85\00:35:25.05 we serve a mighty God who is gracious and forgiving 00:35:25.09\00:35:28.32 and... my name is Ryan Day 00:35:28.36\00:35:29.96 and I have Wednesday's lesson 00:35:29.99\00:35:31.53 which is entitled: Prevailing Idolatry 00:35:31.59\00:35:34.86 and I'm going to be jumping right into the first verse 00:35:34.90\00:35:38.57 of Genesis chapter 35 because... this... now... 00:35:38.60\00:35:42.34 now there's a lot to take another turn... another change 00:35:42.37\00:35:45.61 in the camp of Jacob 00:35:45.64\00:35:48.28 and I just have to ask this question, 00:35:48.31\00:35:50.18 "Does God accept us as we are when we come to Him?" 00:35:50.21\00:35:53.75 Panel: Yes... yes. 00:35:53.82\00:35:55.15 Ryan: He certainly does, in fact, we hear that a lot, 00:35:55.18\00:35:57.05 you know, God accepts you just as you are 00:35:57.09\00:35:59.35 and that is so true. 00:35:59.39\00:36:00.72 We serve a loving, kind, gracious... wonderful God 00:36:00.76\00:36:03.73 who accepts us just as we are. 00:36:03.76\00:36:05.93 we come to Him with all of our problems... 00:36:05.96\00:36:08.10 with all of our... our issues in our life 00:36:08.13\00:36:10.17 and in all of the backwardness from this character... 00:36:10.20\00:36:13.07 He accepts us just as we are but as we're about to read, 00:36:13.10\00:36:15.94 He does not leave us and He does not... 00:36:15.97\00:36:18.14 He... He... He is not determined to leave us the way that we are. 00:36:18.17\00:36:21.04 God is a changing God... He is a transforming God... 00:36:21.08\00:36:24.25 and so, here what we have and we read Genesis chapter 35, 00:36:24.28\00:36:27.85 I'm going to begin in verse 1, 00:36:27.88\00:36:29.65 it says, "Then God said to Jacob, 00:36:29.68\00:36:31.45 'Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there; 00:36:31.49\00:36:34.06 and make an altar there to God, 00:36:34.09\00:36:35.82 who appeared to you 00:36:35.86\00:36:37.19 when you fled from the face of Esau, your brother. ' 00:36:37.23\00:36:39.59 And Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, 00:36:39.63\00:36:43.40 'Put away the foreign gods that are among you, 00:36:43.43\00:36:46.57 purify yourselves, and change your garments. 00:36:46.60\00:36:50.31 Then let us arise and go up to Bethel; 00:36:50.34\00:36:53.51 and I will make an altar there to God, 00:36:53.54\00:36:56.01 who answered me in the day of my distress 00:36:56.04\00:36:58.01 and has been with me in the way in which I have gone. ' 00:36:58.05\00:37:01.32 So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods 00:37:01.35\00:37:04.55 which were in their hands, 00:37:04.59\00:37:05.92 and the earrings which were in their ears; 00:37:05.95\00:37:07.49 and Jacob hid them under the terebinth tree 00:37:07.52\00:37:10.73 which was by Shechem. 00:37:10.76\00:37:12.13 And they journeyed, 00:37:12.16\00:37:13.50 and the terror of God was upon the cities 00:37:13.53\00:37:16.36 that were all around them, 00:37:16.43\00:37:17.77 and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. 00:37:17.80\00:37:19.73 So Jacob came to Luz... that is, Bethel, 00:37:19.77\00:37:23.10 which is the land of Canaan, 00:37:23.14\00:37:25.14 he and all the people that were with him. 00:37:25.17\00:37:27.51 And he built an altar there and called the place El Bethel, 00:37:27.54\00:37:30.65 because there God appeared to him 00:37:30.68\00:37:32.71 when he fled from the face of his brother. 00:37:32.75\00:37:35.35 Now, Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died, 00:37:35.38\00:37:37.85 and she was buried below Bethel under the terebinth tree. " 00:37:37.89\00:37:40.42 And... so it goes on to say, 00:37:40.46\00:37:42.09 "the name of it was called Allon Bachuth. 00:37:42.12\00:37:44.79 Then God appeared to Jacob again, 00:37:44.83\00:37:48.63 when he came from Padan Aram, and blessed him. 00:37:48.66\00:37:51.80 And God said to him, 'Your name is Jacob; 00:37:51.83\00:37:54.80 your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, 00:37:54.84\00:37:57.74 but Israel shall be your name. ' 00:37:57.77\00:37:59.47 So He called his name Israel. " 00:37:59.51\00:38:01.84 And so, what we see here is that God... 00:38:01.88\00:38:05.28 He dealt with Jacob, right, 00:38:05.31\00:38:07.05 He's brought Jacob into... 00:38:07.08\00:38:08.62 you know, he's had a personal experience, 00:38:08.65\00:38:10.79 Jacob has had a personal experience with God 00:38:10.82\00:38:12.19 but now, God is going to get the rest of the camp 00:38:12.25\00:38:14.39 and He's saying, "Now, come back to Bethel... 00:38:14.42\00:38:16.52 make an offering to Me... " 00:38:16.56\00:38:18.06 but now, we see here that Jacob tells the camp... 00:38:18.09\00:38:20.13 he says, "Look if we're going to go up 00:38:20.20\00:38:21.53 and we're going to have an encounter with God, 00:38:21.56\00:38:22.90 we're going to extend worship to God... 00:38:22.93\00:38:24.40 we're going to be in God's presence, 00:38:24.43\00:38:25.93 you got to make some changes... 00:38:25.97\00:38:27.30 you got to change your garments, 00:38:27.34\00:38:28.67 you got to get rid of these false idols 00:38:28.70\00:38:31.17 because only God... Him... we serve alone, 00:38:31.21\00:38:34.48 so, it's not enough to make a physical move 00:38:34.51\00:38:37.75 from one place to another 00:38:37.78\00:38:39.21 or from one church to another 00:38:39.25\00:38:41.08 and expect God's blessing 00:38:41.12\00:38:42.45 while there are idols still in our lives. 00:38:42.48\00:38:44.75 That's the point we're going to bring from this. 00:38:44.79\00:38:46.35 Some of us are still cherishing idols in our hearts 00:38:46.39\00:38:49.52 and God cannot give us a new name as He did Jacob... 00:38:49.56\00:38:52.56 Jacob to Israel... God cannot give us that new name... 00:38:52.59\00:38:55.56 that new identification in Him unless we surrender all to Him. 00:38:55.60\00:39:00.10 That's the purpose of these verses. 00:39:00.14\00:39:01.64 It's not so much that we clean up to come to God 00:39:01.67\00:39:04.64 but rather, when God calls us, He accepts us as we are 00:39:04.67\00:39:08.08 but, yes, there is a cleaning process 00:39:08.11\00:39:09.98 that God requires and that God will do in you 00:39:10.01\00:39:12.88 and in those who are willing. 00:39:12.91\00:39:14.32 I love Colossians chapter 3, verses 1 to 7, 00:39:14.35\00:39:17.42 again, on this idolatry theme, 00:39:17.45\00:39:20.02 Colossians chapter 3 verses 1 through 7, 00:39:20.06\00:39:22.62 notice what the Bible says, 00:39:22.66\00:39:23.99 it says, "If then you were raised with Christ, 00:39:24.03\00:39:27.33 seek those things which are above, where Christ is, 00:39:27.36\00:39:31.57 sitting at the right hand of God. 00:39:31.60\00:39:33.54 Set your mind on these things above, 00:39:33.57\00:39:35.47 not on the things of the earth. 00:39:35.50\00:39:36.84 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 00:39:36.87\00:39:40.81 When Christ who is our life appears, 00:39:40.84\00:39:43.65 then you also will appear with Him in glory... " 00:39:43.68\00:39:46.25 and then notice verse 5 here, 00:39:46.28\00:39:47.72 "Therefore put to death your members which are of the earth" 00:39:47.75\00:39:50.52 and then again it gives the list here, 00:39:50.55\00:39:52.02 "fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, 00:39:52.05\00:39:55.12 and covetousness, which is idolatry. 00:39:55.16\00:39:58.16 Because of these things 00:39:58.19\00:39:59.53 the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 00:39:59.56\00:40:02.06 in which you yourselves once walked 00:40:02.10\00:40:04.17 when you lived in them. " 00:46:18.61\00:46:21.21 which means... the house of God. 00:46:21.24\00:46:22.64 Panel: Hmmm... 00:46:22.68\00:46:24.01 Verse 16, "Then they journeyed from Bethel. 00:46:24.05\00:46:26.18 And when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath, 00:46:26.21\00:46:31.29 Rachel labored in childbirth, 00:46:31.32\00:46:34.16 and she had a hard labor. " 00:46:46.50\00:46:51.17 And so it was that as her soul was departing... 00:46:51.21\00:46:54.78 for she died... 00:46:54.81\00:46:56.14 that she called his name Ben-Oni... 00:46:56.18\00:46:58.95 which means: son of sorrow. 00:46:58.98\00:47:01.12 "But his father called him Benjamin... " 00:47:01.15\00:47:03.62 which means son of the right hand. 00:47:03.65\00:47:05.92 Now, don't be shaken by this part here where it says, 00:47:05.95\00:47:08.66 "As her soul was departing" 00:47:08.69\00:47:10.49 because this part "soul" here is the word Nephesh 00:47:10.53\00:47:13.33 which is about 119 times is translated... "life" 00:47:13.36\00:47:16.67 and we don't have time to get into this aspect, 00:47:16.70\00:47:19.53 but this is merely saying that in her dying breath, 00:47:19.57\00:47:23.27 she calls her son Ben-Oni. 00:47:23.30\00:47:25.07 As we continue here... verse 19... 00:47:25.11\00:47:28.68 "So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath... 00:47:28.71\00:47:32.01 that is Bethlehem. 00:47:32.05\00:47:33.75 And Jacob set up a pillar on her grave, 00:47:33.78\00:47:35.42 which is the pillar of Rachel's grave to this day. " 00:47:35.45\00:47:38.59 Now, Rachel was the love of Jacob's life. 00:47:38.62\00:47:42.12 Oh, he loved Rachel so much... 00:47:42.16\00:47:44.06 the Bible says... he worked 14 years 00:47:44.09\00:47:47.23 just to marry Rachel 00:47:47.26\00:47:48.66 and now, sadly he has to lay her in the grave 00:47:48.70\00:47:53.27 and he set up a pillar 00:47:53.30\00:47:54.87 to commemorate the place of her burial 00:47:54.90\00:47:57.87 and they... they say that there is still some significance 00:47:57.91\00:48:01.64 as to where she is buried. 00:48:01.68\00:48:03.75 Now, you'll find interesting 00:48:03.78\00:48:05.81 that in the book of Matthew chapter 2 verse 18, 00:48:05.85\00:48:08.58 Rachel is mentioned again. 00:48:08.62\00:48:10.42 It says, "In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, 00:48:10.49\00:48:13.59 and weeping, and great mourning, 00:48:13.62\00:48:15.19 Rachel weeping for her children, 00:48:15.22\00:48:16.73 and would not be comforted, because they are not. " 00:48:16.76\00:48:19.49 So, Rachel is one of the persons in the Bible, 00:48:19.53\00:48:23.90 that has a prophetic significance. 00:48:23.93\00:48:27.70 Now, when she was dying, it's interesting that she... 00:48:27.74\00:48:31.71 you know, she said at one point to Jacob, 00:48:31.74\00:48:34.18 "Give me children or I'll die. " 00:48:34.21\00:48:37.15 Panel: Yeah. 00:48:37.18\00:48:38.51 Dinzey: And unfortunately, giving birth to her second son, 00:48:38.55\00:48:41.32 she did die... 00:48:41.35\00:48:42.68 a rather interesting thing that takes place. 00:48:42.72\00:48:45.05 Now, Genesis 35 verse 21, 00:48:45.09\00:48:47.79 we go through the next event described there, 00:48:47.82\00:48:52.09 "Then Israel journeyed 00:48:52.13\00:48:53.46 and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder. 00:48:53.50\00:48:56.97 And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, 00:48:57.00\00:49:00.70 that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine" 00:49:00.74\00:49:05.21 and notice what it says, 00:49:05.24\00:49:07.21 "And Israel heard about it. " 00:49:07.24\00:49:09.81 Now, this is a rather interesting 00:49:09.84\00:49:12.05 thing that happens here 00:49:12.08\00:49:13.42 and it's kind of mentioned like a... "Oh, by the way, 00:49:13.45\00:49:16.92 Reuben did this horrible act... " 00:49:16.95\00:49:18.35 and then it just moves on to another story. 00:49:18.39\00:49:20.62 Panel: Laughing. 00:49:20.66\00:49:21.99 Dinzey: Now, the Bible doesn't just do that... 00:49:22.02\00:49:24.13 there are... there are reasons why this is mentioned 00:49:24.16\00:49:26.33 and I'm going to bring out some things here 00:49:26.36\00:49:28.43 that you'll find interesting. 00:49:28.46\00:49:30.27 When you get to Genesis chapter 49... 00:49:30.30\00:49:33.20 and apparently here in chapter 35, 00:49:33.23\00:49:36.07 Jacob just... he heard about it and apparently did nothing 00:49:36.10\00:49:39.64 or nothing is at least mentioned in chapter 35 00:49:39.67\00:49:42.78 but when you get to Genesis 49, now, here in verse 1, 00:49:42.81\00:49:47.42 notice what is taking place, 00:49:47.45\00:49:48.78 "And Jacob called his sons, and said, 00:49:48.82\00:49:50.35 'Gather together that I may tell you 00:49:50.39\00:49:52.15 what shall befall you in the last days. ' 00:49:52.19\00:49:54.59 Verses 3 and 4, he's talking about Reuben. 00:49:54.62\00:49:57.76 "Reuben, you are my firstborn, 00:49:57.79\00:50:00.10 my might, and the beginning of my strength, 00:50:00.13\00:50:02.56 the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power... " 00:50:02.60\00:50:05.97 Verse 4, "Unstable as water, you shall not excel; 00:50:06.00\00:50:10.61 because you went up to our father's bed, 00:50:10.64\00:50:13.27 then you defiled it... you went up to my couch. " 00:50:13.31\00:50:16.64 You see, Reuben was Jacob's firstborn. 00:50:16.68\00:50:20.55 He had the privilege to be the firstborn son of Jacob. 00:50:20.58\00:50:25.02 What does that mean? 00:50:25.05\00:50:26.39 That means that he had the high privilege 00:50:26.42\00:50:29.32 if he was faithful... 00:50:29.36\00:50:31.09 notice: if he was faithful to be in the lineage of the Messiah 00:50:31.13\00:50:35.66 and notice what happens here in Matthew chapter 1. 00:50:35.70\00:50:41.24 The lineage of Jesus is mentioned 00:50:41.27\00:50:43.81 and Reuben should be on that list but he's not. 00:50:43.84\00:50:47.14 I'm just going to read verses 1 and 2. 00:50:47.18\00:50:50.51 Matthew chapter 1 verses 2 and 3 actually, 00:50:50.55\00:50:53.38 "Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; 00:50:53.42\00:50:56.22 and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren. 00:50:56.25\00:51:00.19 And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; 00:51:00.22\00:51:04.06 and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram. " 00:51:04.09\00:51:06.46 Here Reuben should have been mentioned 00:51:06.49\00:51:09.20 but he lost the privilege to be... receive the blessing 00:51:09.23\00:51:13.70 of the firstborn 00:51:13.74\00:51:15.10 and he's not in the lineage of the Messiah. 00:51:15.14\00:51:18.61 And notice what it says in Hebrews chapter 7 verse 14, 00:51:18.64\00:51:23.24 "For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; 00:51:23.28\00:51:27.82 of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood. " 00:51:27.85\00:51:32.12 Is it possible that Reuben should have been there? 00:51:32.15\00:51:35.16 He lost the privilege to be... 00:51:35.19\00:51:37.89 to receive the blessing of the firstborn son. 00:51:37.93\00:51:41.13 In the book Patriarchs and Prophets page 236, 00:51:41.16\00:51:44.30 it says, "The crowning blessings of the birthright 00:51:44.33\00:51:48.00 were transferred to Judah. 00:51:48.04\00:51:49.64 The significance of the name which denotes praises... 00:51:49.67\00:51:53.58 unfolded in the prophetic history of the tribe... " 00:51:53.61\00:51:57.41 He lost that privilege because of the crime, he committed. 00:51:57.45\00:52:01.58 Also in Patriarchs and Prophets, 177, 00:52:01.62\00:52:05.99 it says, "They were taught to regard the birthright 00:52:06.02\00:52:09.32 as a matter of great importance, 00:52:09.36\00:52:10.99 for it included not only the inheritance of worldly wealth 00:52:11.03\00:52:14.50 but spiritual preeminence. 00:52:14.53\00:52:16.26 He who received it was to be the priest of his family, 00:52:16.30\00:52:19.13 and in the line of his posterity 00:52:19.17\00:52:21.40 the Redeemer of the world would come. " 00:52:21.44\00:52:24.04 Very important. 00:52:24.07\00:52:26.01 "On the other hand, 00:52:26.04\00:52:27.38 there were obligations resting upon the possessor 00:52:27.41\00:52:29.51 of the birthright. 00:52:29.54\00:52:30.91 He should inherit its blessings 00:52:30.95\00:52:33.21 must devote his life to the service of God. 00:52:33.25\00:52:36.15 Like Abraham, he must be obedient 00:52:36.18\00:52:38.35 to the divine requirements. 00:52:38.39\00:52:39.95 In marriage, in his family relations, 00:52:39.99\00:52:42.12 in public life, he must consult the will of God. " 00:52:42.16\00:52:45.63 And so, he lost that privilege 00:52:45.66\00:52:48.06 because of that horrible crime he committed. 00:52:48.10\00:52:50.80 Now, the book of Genesis chapter 35 00:52:50.83\00:52:54.90 beginning in verse 22... something marvelous happens 00:52:54.94\00:52:57.41 that just mentions the sons of Jacob 00:52:57.44\00:53:00.81 as he... as he's going back to his father's land... 00:53:00.84\00:53:04.35 very interesting because 00:53:04.38\00:53:05.71 what happened to Jacob as he was leaving his father's... 00:53:05.75\00:53:08.88 he left with a staff... probably some water 00:53:08.92\00:53:11.52 and something to eat but now he's returning 00:53:11.55\00:53:13.96 with a huge multitude of people and great wealth. 00:53:13.99\00:53:17.93 The Lord had... had blessed him mightily 00:53:17.99\00:53:21.43 and he had repented... he had become... 00:53:21.46\00:53:24.83 his name was changed from Jacob to Israel 00:53:24.87\00:53:28.17 and so, it is that Jacob was able 00:53:28.20\00:53:32.47 to come into his father's house with great blessings. 00:53:32.51\00:53:35.51 Now, the last part of Genesis chapter 35 00:53:35.54\00:53:39.65 records the death of one of the patriarchs named Isaac. 00:53:39.68\00:53:44.29 Beginning in verse 27, 00:53:44.32\00:53:45.69 "Then Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre, 00:53:45.72\00:53:50.26 or Kirjath Arba... that is, Hebron... 00:53:50.33\00:53:52.96 where Abraham and Isaac had dwelt. 00:53:52.99\00:53:55.60 Now the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years. " 00:53:55.66\00:54:00.30 Wow! one of the last individuals in the Bible to live that long 00:54:00.34\00:54:06.91 after the flood. 00:54:06.94\00:54:08.58 "So Isaac breathed his last and died, 00:54:08.64\00:54:11.65 and was gathered to his people being old and full of days: 00:54:11.68\00:54:14.85 and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him. " 00:54:14.88\00:54:18.15 Isn't that wonderful that these two sons of Isaac 00:54:18.19\00:54:24.09 that were, you know, Esau said, 00:54:24.13\00:54:26.56 "I'm going to kill him... I'm going to kill him. " 00:54:26.59\00:54:28.26 But the Lord worked out the reconciliation of these two 00:54:28.30\00:54:32.93 and together, they were able to bury their father. 00:54:32.97\00:54:36.94 You know, there are lots of lessons here 00:54:37.01\00:54:39.87 in the book of Genesis from the stories... 00:54:39.91\00:54:42.71 they're not just stories... they're not entertainment... 00:54:42.74\00:54:44.51 they have valuable lessons and we see here 00:54:44.55\00:54:47.05 that some of the things taking place in the book of Genesis 00:54:47.08\00:54:50.99 have prophetic significance 00:54:51.05\00:54:52.39 and so, read them carefully... 00:54:52.42\00:54:54.49 ask the Lord to give you understanding of what is there 00:54:54.52\00:54:57.13 to glean the lessons... 00:54:57.16\00:54:58.76 not only to understand prophecy 00:54:58.79\00:55:01.23 but to help you... guide you in your life because 00:55:01.26\00:55:04.13 those mistakes they made are there 00:55:04.17\00:55:06.57 to be examples for us 00:55:06.60\00:55:08.04 that we should be faithful to God 00:55:08.07\00:55:10.04 instead of making these mistakes 00:55:10.07\00:55:11.97 and then having to reap the bitter results of wickedness. 00:55:12.01\00:55:15.88 Jill: Amen... thank you all so much. 00:55:15.91\00:55:18.15 It was a heavy lesson this week... 00:55:18.18\00:55:20.38 to me a lot of it was heavy 00:55:20.42\00:55:21.78 but we see the consequences of sin... 00:55:21.82\00:55:24.72 of walking in the way of our own choosing, 00:55:24.75\00:55:27.46 but we see the blessing of God 00:55:27.49\00:55:29.76 and the promise of forgiveness and repentance 00:55:29.79\00:55:32.69 and reconciliation. 00:55:32.73\00:55:34.06 I want to give each one of you a moment 00:55:34.10\00:55:35.50 to share something about your day... Pastor James. 00:55:35.53\00:55:37.47 James: Well, the lesson that we see with the reconciliation 00:55:37.50\00:55:40.20 between the two brothers, 00:55:40.24\00:55:41.60 is the same lesson that Jacob learned 00:55:41.64\00:55:44.71 as he wrestled with the angel 00:55:44.74\00:55:46.54 and that was a lesson of grace and mercy and forgiveness 00:55:46.57\00:55:49.64 and that grace and mercy comes to us from God 00:55:49.71\00:55:52.78 in a vertical relationship 00:55:52.81\00:55:54.75 but then it is to go out from us to others in a horizontal way. 00:55:54.78\00:55:57.95 Panel: Amen. 00:55:58.02\00:55:59.35 Lomacang: You know, thank you, when I think about the story 00:55:59.39\00:56:00.72 of Dinah... a couple of thoughts came to my mind. 00:56:00.76\00:56:03.26 When you read Genesis 34 verses 1 to 3 it says, 00:56:03.29\00:56:05.73 Dinah the daughter of Leah 00:56:05.76\00:56:07.16 went out to see the daughters of the land 00:56:07.20\00:56:09.60 and being the only girl in the family at that time, 00:56:09.63\00:56:12.33 she may have dressed to fit into the crowd 00:56:12.37\00:56:14.50 but she was introduced to an environment 00:56:14.54\00:56:16.57 as a 14- to 15-year old that proved to be too strong for her 00:56:16.60\00:56:20.71 and then you see the story, it says, 00:56:20.74\00:56:22.21 Shechem saw her... took her and lay with her 00:56:22.24\00:56:25.38 and violated her 00:56:25.41\00:56:26.75 and when you study what commentators say 00:56:26.78\00:56:28.68 about the situation, 00:56:28.72\00:56:30.05 they say that this will be... 00:56:30.09\00:56:31.42 today what we might call: "date rape" 00:56:31.45\00:56:33.39 and not a violent rape as was the case with Tamar 00:56:33.42\00:56:37.03 because later on Shechem expressed how much he loved her 00:56:37.06\00:56:40.06 tried to fix it with her family 00:56:40.10\00:56:41.90 and Joseph consenting to the conditions 00:56:41.93\00:56:44.27 didn't see this as a violent act. 00:56:44.30\00:56:46.50 Here's the lesson, 1st Corinthians 15:33, 00:56:46.53\00:56:49.37 "Do not be deceived: 00:56:49.40\00:56:50.74 evil company corrupts good manners. " 00:56:50.77\00:56:53.27 Make good choices about your environment. 00:56:53.31\00:56:55.78 Ryan: Absolutely, you know, I mentioned I had eight points, 00:56:55.84\00:56:58.31 I'd listed seven... here's my eighth one here, 00:56:58.35\00:57:01.12 you can allow, possibly, family... spouse and children 00:57:01.18\00:57:04.65 to become an idol in your life... 00:57:04.69\00:57:06.69 obviously, we should love our family 00:57:06.72\00:57:08.66 and our spouse and children but Matthew 10... Jesus says, 00:57:08.69\00:57:10.99 "He who loves father or mother more than he loves Me 00:57:11.03\00:57:13.06 is not worthy of Me. 00:57:13.09\00:57:14.43 And he who loves son or daughter more than Me 00:57:14.46\00:57:16.56 is not worthy of Me. 00:57:16.60\00:57:17.93 And he who does not take up his cross and follow Me 00:57:17.97\00:57:19.60 is not worthy of Me. " 00:57:19.63\00:57:21.47 Put your... put your trust in God 00:57:21.50\00:57:23.00 and put Him first in every aspect. 00:57:23.04\00:57:24.51 Dinzey: Amen... amen... concerning birthright... 00:57:24.54\00:57:27.04 this is something marvelous I found in Letter 4 from 1898 00:57:27.08\00:57:30.21 Sister Ellen G. White says, "Christ has brought within reach 00:57:30.25\00:57:33.38 and secured for every man 00:57:33.42\00:57:35.05 high and temporal and spiritual blessings. 00:57:35.08\00:57:37.75 This is the birthright of every soul born into the world. " 00:57:37.79\00:57:41.56 If you are faithful those blessings will be for you. 00:57:41.62\00:57:45.06 Jill: Amen, thank you, Pastor Johny, 00:57:45.09\00:57:47.00 Ryan, Pastor John and Pastor James... 00:57:47.06\00:57:48.73 thank you for sharing. 00:57:48.76\00:57:50.10 I just want to leave you with one quote this time 00:57:50.13\00:57:52.33 of Jacob's trouble that I had talked about. 00:57:52.37\00:57:54.30 We will see at the end of time 00:57:54.34\00:57:55.90 where you and I can reach forward 00:57:55.94\00:57:57.91 and lay hold by faith on God 00:57:57.94\00:57:59.77 and say, "I will not let You go unless You bless me. " 00:57:59.81\00:58:03.68 Join us next week: Number 11... Joseph, Master of Dreams. 00:58:03.71\00:58:07.55
