unfortunately in this story,

one more than the other

one more than the prior one

and so, the story... the
writer of the lesson picks up

The miracle child... an early

doing is... reading the story

stories and see how they fit

between the two brothers

may be experiencing.

"Now Isaac pleaded
with the Lord for his wife,

because she was barren;

and the Lord granted his plea,

and Rebekah his wife conceived.

But the children
struggled together within her;

and she said, 'If all is
well, why am I like this?'"

Afterward, his brother came out,

so his name was called Jacob.

Isaac was sixty years
old when she bore them.

So the boys grew.

As Esau was a skillful
hunter, a man of the field;

but Jacob was a mild
man, dwelling in tents.

And Isaac loved Esau
because he ate of his game,

but Rebekah loved Jacob.

Now Jacob cooked a stew;

and Esau came in from
the field, and he was weary.

And Esau said to Jacob,

'Please feed me with
that same red stew.. '"

a red man that likes red stew...

birthright to me?"

"Swear to me as of this day. "

sold his birthright to Jacob.

And Jacob gave Esau
bread and stew of lentils;

then he ate and drank,
arose, and went his way.

Thus Esau
despised his birthright.

You know, his greed

and his lack of
appreciation for the birthright

is what opened that door
to Jacob given the opportunity

to steal the birthright.

Amazing how deep appetites are!

about the depth of appetite

and I believe that's
one of the reasons why

we can overcome anything. "

How did man fall? On
the heels of appetite.

Esau sold his birthright
on the heels of appetite.

Jacob was able to
manipulate him because he knew

that his appetite was
stronger than his allegiance

to the blessing that was
going to be passed down to him.

So, the question was asked:

What qualities of Jacob
predisposed him to be worthy

of Isaac's blessing?

Let's go down and
look at a comparison...

nation... a hairy nation...

that will serve the younger...

and that's a battle that's still
taking place in the Middle East

to this very day.

When we had a chance
to go to the Holy City,

or the Holy Land

there was quiet... you go
into the city of Jerusalem

and you have a Jewish
side... you have a Muslim side

still to this very day

concerned about who has
the birthright to that city.

On Jacob's side, there's no
description of his appearance.

So, we have to
assume about his appearance.

But one is a skillful hunter...

the other one is mild-mannered

Today, it would say:
he's always in the house.

He doesn't go out

Esau would be the
guy with camouflage.

He was loved by

but Jacob was

Esau requested
that Jacob feed him

and Jacob took advantage of
him because of his appetite.

to give the birthright...

swear away his rights.

And this was a story that
led to some kind of pursuit.

father who continually said,

you don't sound like Esau"

he went even further to disguise
himself with animal skin

steal not only the birthright

but also the blessing

and that really angered
Esau when he realized...

and that's why Bethel became

such a significant
staple in the story

because Bethel is
where the Lord met with Jacob

when he wrestled... when he was
running from his brother, Esau.

And that was
called: The house of God

or the place where God met him
00:10:53.85\00:10:55.75
and he wrestled...

and God in the moment
of Jacob's ah... ah...

with God to forgive him

of his supplanting behavior.

He was wrestling with

There was a coming together.

Esau was seeking Jacob's life

but the Lord worked it out
so that the one pursuing...

taking... to seek to take
the life of his younger brother,

God padded that and brought
them back into harmony together.

And we find Genesis
26 and verses 4 and 5,

The Lord says, "I will
make your descendants multiply

as the stars of heaven;
00:11:56.04\00:11:57.38
I will give to your
descendants all these lands;

and in your seed all the nations
of the earth shall be blessed"

and He says why...

"because Abraham obeyed
My voice and kept My charge,

My commandments, My
statutes, and My laws. "

You see, Jacob openly and
purposefully deceived his father

even using the
name of the Lord in vain

and that was the
part that I believe

he had to really
grappled with God about...

"I used the Lord's name... "

that's why we are told
today, "Let your yes be yes"

and what else?

"And your no be no. "

Don't say, "I swear to
God, I'm telling the truth. "

God is not mocked;

But God's mercy spared
Jacob after his repentance.

Genesis chapter 32 verse 24-28,

"Then Jacob was left alone;

and a Man wrestled with him
until the breaking of the day.

Now when He saw that He
did not prevail against him,

He touched the
socket of his hip;

and the socket of
Jacob's hip was out of joint

as He wrestled with him.

And he said, 'Let me

But he said, 'I will not
let you go unless You bless me!'

So He said to him,
'What is your name?'

be remembered for who you were

but you will be remembered
for who I make you to be...

"but Israel... " is the new
name that the Lord gave to Jacob

struggled with God and with men,

remember, there's a
dividing line between your past

the Lord at the dividing line.
