" 00:02:57.71\00:02:59.37 Panel: Amen... amen. 00:02:59.41\00:03:00.98 Lomacang: Jacob the Supplanter. 00:03:01.04\00:03:03.75 Our Memory Text is Genesis 27 verse 36. 00:03:03.78\00:03:08.08 Wow! what a story! 00:03:08.12\00:03:10.69 What a story that's going to unfold before us today! 00:03:10.72\00:03:13.15 We've talked about relationships in the last lesson 00:03:13.19\00:03:16.46 but now we're going to talk about 00:03:16.49\00:03:17.83 some of the things that are part of our family dynamics. 00:03:17.86\00:03:20.80 Our families and friends and people that we tend to 00:03:20.83\00:03:24.63 always rely on, 00:03:24.67\00:03:26.00 don't always have our best interests at heart. 00:03:26.03\00:03:28.77 Sometimes, they are thinking what's best for them. 00:03:28.80\00:03:31.67 Look at Genesis 27 and verse 36, 00:03:31.71\00:03:34.88 "And Esau said, 'Is he not rightly named Jacob? 00:03:34.91\00:03:40.22 For he has supplanted me these two times. 00:03:40.28\00:03:45.45 He took away my birthright, 00:03:45.49\00:03:48.02 and now look, he has taken away my blessing!' 00:03:48.06\00:03:52.09 And he said, 'Have you not reserved a blessing for me?'" 00:03:52.13\00:03:58.33 Panel: Hmmm... Lomacang: Huh... 00:03:58.37\00:03:59.83 this is a... this is an amazing story 00:03:59.87\00:04:01.47 that two brothers that in some degree represents what we call: 00:04:01.50\00:04:07.18 Sibling Rivalry. 00:04:07.21\00:04:08.54 One is controlled by appetite, 00:04:08.64\00:04:11.38 the other is controlled by power 00:04:11.41\00:04:13.38 and you find unfortunately in this story, 00:04:13.42\00:04:17.09 one parent loves one more than the other 00:04:17.12\00:04:20.76 and the other loves the other one more than the prior one 00:04:20.79\00:04:23.96 and so, the story... the writer of the lesson picks up 00:04:23.99\00:04:27.13 on the continued family history of Isaac. 00:04:27.16\00:04:29.96 The miracle child... an early ancestor of the Promised Seed 00:04:30.03\00:04:36.07 and he writes... he says: 00:04:36.10\00:04:37.44 The story doesn't start out particularly well, however. 00:04:37.47\00:04:40.58 The flawed character of his son Jacob will be manifested 00:04:40.61\00:04:44.28 in the rivalry between the two brothers over the birthright 00:04:44.31\00:04:47.62 and consequently over the right to obtain 00:04:47.65\00:04:51.49 the blessing of Isaac. 00:04:51.52\00:04:53.02 So, let's pick up Genesis chapter 25 00:04:53.05\00:04:55.82 and I'm going to read verses 21 to 34. 00:04:55.86\00:04:58.63 Something I've been doing is... reading the story 00:04:58.66\00:05:00.93 because a lot of times, 00:05:00.96\00:05:02.30 we don't get to read those stories and see how they fit 00:05:02.33\00:05:04.00 and then I'll do a comparison between the two brothers 00:05:04.03\00:05:06.30 that brings out an illustration 00:05:06.33\00:05:07.87 that some of you may be experiencing. 00:05:07.90\00:05:09.54 Verse 21 of chapter 25, 00:05:09.57\00:05:11.97 "Now Isaac pleaded with the Lord for his wife, 00:05:12.01\00:05:15.64 because she was barren; 00:05:15.68\00:05:17.51 and the Lord granted his plea, 00:05:17.55\00:05:19.91 and Rebekah his wife conceived. 00:05:19.95\00:05:22.12 But the children struggled together within her; 00:05:22.15\00:05:24.82 and she said, 'If all is well, why am I like this?'" 00:05:24.85\00:05:29.49 If this is God's blessing... what's going on? 00:05:29.52\00:05:32.56 Panel: Right. 00:05:32.59\00:05:33.93 Lomacang: From the very beginning, 00:05:33.96\00:05:35.30 they started struggling. 00:05:35.33\00:05:36.67 "So she went to inquire of the Lord. 00:05:36.70\00:05:38.10 And the Lord said to her... " wow! 00:05:38.13\00:05:40.64 "Two nations are in your womb... " 00:05:40.67\00:05:42.20 and to this very day, those two nations 00:05:42.24\00:05:43.91 are at odds with each other. 00:05:43.97\00:05:45.31 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:05:45.34\00:05:46.71 Lomacang: "Two peoples shall be separated from your body; 00:05:46.74\00:05:49.48 one people shall be stronger than the other, 00:05:49.51\00:05:52.05 and the older shall serve the younger. " 00:05:52.08\00:05:54.18 So when her days were fulfilled to give birth, 00:05:54.22\00:05:57.42 for her to give birth, 00:05:57.45\00:05:58.79 indeed there were twins in her womb. 00:05:58.82\00:06:00.92 And the first came out red. 00:06:00.96\00:06:02.59 He was like a hairy garment all over; 00:06:02.62\00:06:06.03 so they called his name Esau. 00:06:06.06\00:06:08.40 Afterward, his brother came out, 00:06:08.43\00:06:11.17 and his hand took hold of Esau's heel; 00:06:11.20\00:06:15.50 so his name was called Jacob. 00:06:15.54\00:06:17.74 Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them. 00:06:17.77\00:06:22.14 So the boys grew. 00:06:22.18\00:06:23.75 As Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field; 00:06:23.78\00:06:27.12 but Jacob was a mild man, dwelling in tents. 00:06:27.15\00:06:30.39 And Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, 00:06:30.42\00:06:35.39 but Rebekah loved Jacob. 00:06:35.42\00:06:38.16 Now Jacob cooked a stew; 00:06:38.19\00:06:40.30 and Esau came in from the field, and he was weary. 00:06:40.33\00:06:43.23 And Esau said to Jacob, 00:06:43.26\00:06:45.10 'Please feed me with that same red stew.. '" 00:06:45.13\00:06:48.87 a red man that likes red stew... 00:06:48.90\00:06:51.47 Panel: Laughter. 00:06:51.51\00:06:52.87 Lomacang: "For I am weary. " 00:06:52.91\00:06:54.24 Therefore his name was called Edom. 00:06:54.28\00:06:57.91 But Jacob said, "Sell me your birthright as of this day. " 00:06:57.95\00:07:02.92 And Esau said, "Look, I am about to die anyway; 00:07:02.95\00:07:06.15 so what is this birthright to me?" 00:07:06.19\00:07:08.29 Then Jacob said, "Swear to me as of this day. " 00:07:08.32\00:07:11.93 So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. 00:07:11.96\00:07:15.86 And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils; 00:07:15.90\00:07:20.07 then he ate and drank, arose, and went his way. 00:07:20.10\00:07:24.24 Thus Esau despised his birthright. 00:07:24.27\00:07:28.94 You know, his greed 00:07:28.98\00:07:32.75 and his lack of appreciation for the birthright 00:07:32.78\00:07:36.95 is what opened that door to Jacob given the opportunity 00:07:36.99\00:07:43.49 to steal the birthright. 00:07:43.53\00:07:44.89 Amazing how deep appetites are! 00:07:44.93\00:07:47.33 Panel: Hmmm... 00:07:47.36\00:07:48.86 Lomacang: The story talks about the depth of appetite 00:07:48.90\00:07:50.67 and I believe that's one of the reasons why 00:07:50.70\00:07:52.63 the servant of the Lord, Ellen White says, 00:07:52.67\00:07:54.20 "If we can overcome appetite, we can overcome anything. " 00:07:54.24\00:07:57.11 How did man fall? On the heels of appetite. 00:07:57.14\00:08:00.14 Esau sold his birthright on the heels of appetite. 00:08:00.18\00:08:03.98 Jacob was able to manipulate him because he knew 00:08:04.01\00:08:07.25 that his appetite was stronger than his allegiance 00:08:07.28\00:08:10.49 to the blessing that was going to be passed down to him. 00:08:10.52\00:08:13.25 So, the question was asked: 00:08:13.29\00:08:14.66 What qualities of Jacob predisposed him to be worthy 00:08:14.69\00:08:19.33 of Isaac's blessing? 00:08:19.36\00:08:20.70 Let's go down and look at a comparison... 00:08:20.73\00:08:22.36 I put two columns together 00:08:22.40\00:08:24.13 to look at some of the differences 00:08:24.17\00:08:25.73 and the similarities that they had: 00:08:25.77\00:08:27.24 One... Esau... the Bible talks about how he came out... 00:08:27.27\00:08:31.64 he was... he had red skin and was hairy. 00:08:31.67\00:08:34.44 It's amazing how it says here, "Like a garment of hair... " 00:08:34.51\00:08:37.21 and what nation do you think that's talked about today? 00:08:37.25\00:08:39.91 The Muslim nation... a hairy nation... 00:08:39.98\00:08:43.59 that will serve the younger... 00:08:43.62\00:08:45.42 and that's a battle that's still taking place in the Middle East 00:08:45.45\00:08:48.66 to this very day. 00:08:48.69\00:08:50.03 When we had a chance to go to the Holy City, 00:08:50.06\00:08:52.59 or the Holy Land or the Bible Lands... 00:08:52.63\00:08:55.46 there was quiet... you go into the city of Jerusalem 00:08:55.50\00:08:58.27 and you have a Jewish side... you have a Muslim side 00:08:58.30\00:09:01.04 and they are still to this very day 00:09:01.07\00:09:03.57 concerned about who has the birthright to that city. 00:09:03.61\00:09:08.01 On Jacob's side, there's no description of his appearance. 00:09:08.04\00:09:11.18 So, we have to assume about his appearance. 00:09:11.21\00:09:13.88 But one is a skillful hunter... 00:09:13.92\00:09:15.98 the other one is mild-mannered 00:09:16.02\00:09:17.69 and it said: dwelling in tents. 00:09:17.72\00:09:19.32 Today, it would say: he's always in the house. 00:09:19.35\00:09:22.26 He doesn't go out in the field at all. 00:09:22.29\00:09:24.39 He's... in other words, his hands are clean... 00:09:24.43\00:09:26.63 he's not really getting his fingernails dirty 00:09:26.66\00:09:28.83 like his brother is. 00:09:28.86\00:09:30.23 Esau would be the guy with camouflage. 00:09:30.27\00:09:33.50 Jacob would be the guy that's sitting behind the computer 00:09:33.54\00:09:36.77 and keeping all the bills together... 00:09:36.81\00:09:38.14 writing all the e-mails. 00:09:38.17\00:09:39.51 He was loved by his father... Esau was 00:09:39.54\00:09:43.24 but Jacob was loved by his mother. 00:09:43.28\00:09:46.75 Esau requested that Jacob feed him 00:09:46.78\00:09:50.22 and Jacob took advantage of him because of his appetite. 00:09:50.25\00:09:54.06 Panel: Wow! 00:09:54.09\00:09:55.52 Lomacang: We find in Genesis 25 verse 32, 00:09:55.56\00:09:57.59 "And Esau said, 'Look, I am about to die; 00:09:57.63\00:09:59.63 so what is this birthright to me?'" 00:09:59.66\00:10:01.16 And Jacob said in verse 31 of Genesis 25, 00:10:01.20\00:10:04.70 "Jacob said, 'Sell me your birthright as of this day. '" 00:10:04.73\00:10:08.84 Esau makes an agreement to give the birthright... 00:10:08.87\00:10:11.74 Jacob asked Esau to swear away his rights. 00:10:11.77\00:10:15.98 And this was a story that led to some kind of pursuit. 00:10:16.04\00:10:19.81 When... when... when the father who continually said, 00:10:19.85\00:10:23.85 "Wait a minute... you don't... you don't sound like Esau" 00:10:23.89\00:10:27.86 he went even further to disguise himself with animal skin 00:10:27.89\00:10:31.36 that was hairy 00:10:31.39\00:10:32.73 and still went to steal not only the birthright 00:10:32.76\00:10:35.46 but also the blessing 00:10:35.50\00:10:36.83 and that really angered Esau when he realized... 00:10:36.87\00:10:40.14 "Wait a minute... " 00:10:40.17\00:10:41.50 and that's why Bethel became 00:10:41.54\00:10:42.87 such a significant staple in the story 00:10:42.90\00:10:45.14 because Bethel is where the Lord met with Jacob 00:10:45.17\00:10:48.51 when he wrestled... when he was running from his brother, Esau. 00:10:48.54\00:10:51.11 And that was called: The house of God 00:10:51.15\00:10:53.82 or the place where God met him 00:10:53.85\00:10:55.75 and he wrestled... 00:10:55.78\00:10:57.19 and God in the moment of Jacob's ah... ah... 00:10:57.22\00:11:01.66 what's the word I'm looking here? 00:11:01.69\00:11:04.39 Frailty... 00:11:04.43\00:11:05.76 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:11:05.79\00:11:07.13 Lomacang: God said, "Because you wrestled with Me. " 00:11:07.16\00:11:08.90 That was... and I think the wrestling there was 00:11:08.93\00:11:11.03 synonymous today with us wrestling with God 00:11:11.07\00:11:12.90 about our sin. 00:11:12.93\00:11:14.50 It wasn't just him having a tussle with God 00:11:14.54\00:11:16.81 because he would have lost 00:11:16.84\00:11:18.21 but he was wrestling with God to forgive him 00:11:18.24\00:11:20.61 of his supplanting behavior. 00:11:20.64\00:11:23.04 He was wrestling with God to ask for forgiveness 00:11:23.08\00:11:26.11 and God said, "Because you prevailed 00:11:26.15\00:11:27.62 with God and with man... I'm going to change your name. " 00:11:27.65\00:11:30.52 And later on, we know the rest of the story. 00:11:30.55\00:11:32.95 There was a coming together. 00:11:33.02\00:11:35.66 Esau was seeking Jacob's life 00:11:35.72\00:11:38.29 but the Lord worked it out so that the one pursuing... 00:11:38.33\00:11:41.43 taking... to seek to take the life of his younger brother, 00:11:41.46\00:11:45.43 God padded that and brought them back into harmony together. 00:11:45.47\00:11:49.44 And we find Genesis 26 and verses 4 and 5, 00:11:49.47\00:11:52.37 The Lord says, "I will make your descendants multiply 00:11:52.44\00:11:56.01 as the stars of heaven; 00:11:56.04\00:11:57.38 I will give to your descendants all these lands; 00:11:57.41\00:12:01.28 and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed" 00:12:01.32\00:12:05.42 and He says why... 00:12:05.45\00:12:07.22 "because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, 00:12:07.26\00:12:10.69 My commandments, My statutes, and My laws. " 00:12:10.73\00:12:13.73 You see, Jacob openly and purposefully deceived his father 00:12:13.76\00:12:17.87 even using the name of the Lord in vain 00:12:17.90\00:12:20.57 and that was the part that I believe 00:12:20.60\00:12:23.20 he had to really grappled with God about... 00:12:23.24\00:12:25.77 "I used the Lord's name... " 00:12:25.81\00:12:27.14 that's why we are told today, "Let your yes be yes" 00:12:27.18\00:12:30.25 and what else? 00:12:30.28\00:12:31.65 "And your no be no. " 00:12:31.68\00:12:33.05 Don't say, "I swear to God, I'm telling the truth. " 00:12:33.08\00:12:35.42 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:12:35.48\00:12:36.82 Lomacang: I've learned that if you're telling the truth, 00:12:36.85\00:12:38.65 you don't have to remember the story. 00:12:38.69\00:12:40.66 It's people that don't tell the truth 00:12:40.69\00:12:42.59 that will say, "What did I say? 00:12:42.62\00:12:44.03 How did I say that?" 00:12:44.06\00:12:45.39 "What was that I said?" 00:12:45.43\00:12:46.76 If you're a person that your "yes" is yes and your "no" is no 00:12:46.80\00:12:49.80 then God will always be honored. 00:12:49.83\00:12:51.83 Jacob faced the results of his deception 00:12:51.87\00:12:56.20 and how is that? 00:12:56.24\00:12:57.67 The Bible says in Galatians 6 verse 7, 00:12:57.71\00:12:59.97 "Do not be deceived, 00:13:00.04\00:13:01.64 God is not mocked; 00:13:01.68\00:13:03.24 for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. " 00:13:03.28\00:13:07.52 But God's mercy spared Jacob after his repentance. 00:13:07.55\00:13:11.75 Genesis chapter 32 verse 24-28, 00:13:11.79\00:13:15.32 "Then Jacob was left alone; 00:13:15.36\00:13:18.86 and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. 00:13:18.89\00:13:22.00 Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, 00:13:22.03\00:13:25.97 He touched the socket of his hip; 00:13:26.00\00:13:27.84 and the socket of Jacob's hip was out of joint 00:13:27.87\00:13:30.17 as He wrestled with him. 00:13:30.21\00:13:31.74 And he said, 'Let me go, for the day breaks. ' 00:13:31.77\00:13:34.24 But he said, 'I will not let you go unless You bless me!' 00:13:34.28\00:13:37.05 So He said to him, 'What is your name?' 00:13:37.08\00:13:38.85 He said, 'Jacob. ' 00:13:38.88\00:13:40.22 And the Lord said to him... " in verse 24, 00:13:40.25\00:13:43.32 "And He said, 'Your name shall no longer be called Jacob... ' " 00:13:43.35\00:13:46.82 in other words, you will not be remembered for who you were 00:13:46.86\00:13:50.03 but you will be remembered for who I make you to be... 00:13:50.06\00:13:54.36 "but Israel... " is the new name that the Lord gave to Jacob 00:13:54.40\00:13:57.57 "for you have struggled with God and with men, 00:13:57.63\00:14:00.07 and have prevailed. " 00:14:00.10\00:14:01.44 Here's my point before I pass to Shelley, 00:14:01.47\00:14:03.20 remember, there's a dividing line between your past 00:14:03.24\00:14:05.97 and your future 00:14:06.01\00:14:07.34 and you'll always find the Lord at the dividing line. 00:14:07.38\00:14:10.08 Panel: Amen and amen. 00:14:10.11\00:14:11.55 Shelley: Thank you for that foundation. 00:14:11.58\00:14:12.95 You know, sometimes we hear people who act like God isn't... 00:14:12.98\00:14:18.95 or we don't see Jesus in the Old Testament 00:14:18.99\00:14:22.49 and Genesis is filled with appearances 00:14:22.52\00:14:25.96 of the pre-incarnate Jesus. 00:14:25.99\00:14:28.30 The Angel of the Lord... 00:14:28.33\00:14:30.57 and to me, it's one of the most beautiful stories. 00:14:30.60\00:14:34.07 Now, I love that Jacob held on and wrestled with the Lord 00:14:34.10\00:14:39.64 till he received a blessing 00:14:39.67\00:14:41.81 and God changed his name 00:14:41.84\00:14:43.95 because he was changing his character. 00:14:43.98\00:14:46.08 But we're going to back up just a little bit before that story 00:14:46.11\00:14:49.42 and look at Jacob's Ladder... that's Monday's Lesson 00:14:49.45\00:14:52.82 and by the way, I'm Shelley Quinn. 00:14:52.85\00:14:54.89 Okay, I'm going to read this 00:14:54.92\00:14:56.66 because this was really well worded, 00:14:56.69\00:14:59.49 straight from the Quarterly. 00:14:59.53\00:15:01.03 "As soon as Esau learns that Jacob has received 00:15:01.06\00:15:04.20 his father's blessing, 00:15:04.23\00:15:05.80 he understands that he has been deceived and supplanted 00:15:05.83\00:15:10.07 by his brother, and he wants to kill him. 00:15:10.11\00:15:13.14 So, Rebekah is worried. 00:15:13.17\00:15:15.21 She wants to prevent this crime 00:15:15.24\00:15:17.48 that would be fatal for both sons. 00:15:17.51\00:15:19.98 So, with the support of Isaac, 00:15:20.02\00:15:22.92 she urges Jacob to flee to her family. " 00:15:22.95\00:15:27.62 He's going to go live with his uncle Laban 00:15:27.66\00:15:30.23 who is not such a nice guy? 00:15:30.26\00:15:33.40 "But on his way to exile... " 00:15:33.43\00:15:35.93 here... Jacob is about... 00:15:35.96\00:15:38.37 you know, even though God forgave him, 00:15:38.40\00:15:40.04 there's always circumstances... consequences 00:15:40.07\00:15:46.31 is the word I'm looking for. 00:15:46.34\00:15:47.68 There's always consequences to sin 00:15:47.71\00:15:50.11 so, to prevent being killed, 00:15:50.15\00:15:52.45 he is being sent away and on the way to his exile, 00:15:52.48\00:15:58.12 Jacob encounters God in a dream 00:15:58.15\00:16:01.46 at a place that he's going to call: Bethel, the House of God. 00:16:01.49\00:16:05.73 So, let's look at this story, 00:16:05.76\00:16:08.60 Genesis 28 and verse 2, we're going to just read it. 00:16:08.63\00:16:12.27 Genesis 28 and verse 10, excuse me. 00:16:12.33\00:16:15.60 Genesis 28:10 through 12, 00:16:15.67\00:16:18.37 "Now Jacob went out from Beersheba 00:16:18.44\00:16:21.04 and went toward Haran. 00:16:21.11\00:16:22.44 So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, 00:16:22.48\00:16:26.92 because the sun had set. 00:16:26.95\00:16:28.42 And he took one of the stones of that place 00:16:28.45\00:16:31.15 and he put it at his head, 00:16:31.19\00:16:33.02 and he lay down in that place to sleep. " 00:16:33.05\00:16:37.46 He didn't have a memory-foam pillow did he? 00:16:37.49\00:16:40.30 "Then he dreamed, and behold, 00:16:40.36\00:16:43.53 a ladder was set up on the earth, 00:16:43.57\00:16:45.77 and its top reached to heaven; 00:16:45.80\00:16:49.70 and there the angels of God 00:16:49.74\00:16:52.27 were ascending and descending on it. " 00:16:52.31\00:16:56.34 You know, I was studying this word: Ladder 00:16:56.38\00:16:58.68 and actually, it would be better translated: staircase 00:16:58.71\00:17:03.52 and when I saw that, it was exciting 00:17:03.55\00:17:06.22 because I remember once as I was praying, 00:17:06.25\00:17:08.46 God showed me a staircase 00:17:08.49\00:17:10.29 and I was praying about surrender 00:17:10.33\00:17:12.26 and trying to get up the next step of that 00:17:12.29\00:17:15.30 and God told me... the only thing that was preventing me 00:17:15.36\00:17:19.33 from going forward... the wall of resistance, I kept hitting 00:17:19.37\00:17:23.30 was that I was holding on to too much of self... 00:17:23.34\00:17:29.24 I had to let go a little more of self 00:17:29.28\00:17:32.38 then He had reached down to bring me up to the next step 00:17:32.41\00:17:37.05 but I love that God gives this weary traveler a dream. 00:17:37.09\00:17:41.66 This is a graphic portrayal of the Lord's personal involvement. 00:17:41.69\00:17:49.13 This isn't like the Tower of Babel being built 00:17:49.16\00:17:53.44 to go trying to reach God... 00:17:53.47\00:17:55.07 no, this is God bringing down... 00:17:55.10\00:17:58.21 letting down this ladder... this staircase 00:17:58.24\00:18:01.31 and He is coming down to earth 00:18:01.34\00:18:05.41 to fulfill His covenant promises. 00:18:05.45\00:18:08.02 So, the Quarterly says: 00:18:08.05\00:18:10.05 In this dream, Jacob sees an extraordinary ladder 00:18:10.09\00:18:13.39 that is connected with God. 00:18:13.42\00:18:15.42 And the same Hebrew verb, "natsav" 00:18:15.46\00:18:18.76 is used to refer to the ladder that is "set up" 00:18:18.79\00:18:22.60 and the LORD who "stood". 00:18:22.63\00:18:25.33 So we see that the ladder represented the LORD. 00:18:25.37\00:18:31.27 They're the same thing. Panel: Right. 00:18:31.31\00:18:33.21 Shelley: And we know that Jesus Christ is that Ladder. 00:18:33.24\00:18:37.21 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:18:37.25\00:18:38.58 Shelley: But when... as I mentioned 00:18:38.61\00:18:40.02 at the Tower of Babel, 00:18:40.05\00:18:44.25 this was men trying to supplant God, if you will, 00:18:44.29\00:18:48.42 they were trying to build and reach the heavens. 00:18:48.46\00:18:52.06 But here, it's not by human effort, 00:18:52.09\00:18:55.16 it's God who's coming down to show His personal care. 00:18:55.20\00:18:59.27 Panel: That's right. 00:18:59.30\00:19:00.87 Shelley: So, Genesis 28 verse 13, 00:19:00.90\00:19:04.51 "Behold, the LORD stood above it... " 00:19:04.54\00:19:07.91 stood above this ladder or this staircase... 00:19:07.94\00:19:10.15 "and He said, 'I am the LORD God of Abraham your father, 00:19:10.18\00:19:16.28 and the God of Isaac: 00:19:16.32\00:19:18.09 the land on which you lie, 00:19:18.12\00:19:20.22 I will give to you and your descendants. '" 00:19:20.26\00:19:23.26 God's about to renew the covenant. 00:19:23.29\00:19:25.49 He has already renewed the covenant with Isaac 00:19:25.53\00:19:29.36 as you read in Genesis 26:4 through 5, 00:19:29.40\00:19:32.73 let's read that again. 00:19:32.77\00:19:34.10 When God made this covenant with Abraham... 00:19:34.14\00:19:37.27 remember, this is the progressive unfolding 00:19:37.31\00:19:40.58 of God's everlasting covenant. 00:19:40.61\00:19:42.28 He renewed the covenant with Isaac in Genesis 26:4 through 5, 00:19:42.31\00:19:48.78 He tells Isaac, "I will make your descendants multiply 00:19:49.02\00:19:51.99 as the stars of heaven; 00:19:52.02\00:19:53.69 I will give to your descendants all these lands; 00:19:53.72\00:19:56.42 and in your seed... " here's... this is it... 00:19:56.46\00:20:00.73 we're looking for the Seed, Jesus Christ... 00:20:00.76\00:20:04.97 "in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed. " 00:20:05.00\00:20:09.57 You know, God's covenant with Abraham 00:20:09.60\00:20:12.61 was righteousness by faith. 00:20:12.64\00:20:14.34 God said to Abraham, 00:20:14.38\00:20:16.54 Abraham believed and God credited it 00:20:16.58\00:20:23.55 to him as righteousness. 00:20:23.59\00:20:26.45 He imputed to Abraham's account... that righteousness 00:20:26.49\00:20:31.19 but sometimes people believe, 00:20:31.23\00:20:33.56 "Oh, we're saved by grace through faith, 00:20:33.60\00:20:35.06 we don't need to worry about obeying. " 00:20:35.10\00:20:37.90 But right here, you know, all throughout Abraham's life, 00:20:37.93\00:20:42.80 he walked by obedient faith 00:20:42.84\00:20:45.64 and right here when God is renewing the covenant with Isaac 00:20:45.67\00:20:50.81 in Genesis 26, He tells him why. 00:20:50.85\00:20:54.32 He says in verse 5... Genesis 26 verse 5, 00:20:54.35\00:20:59.99 "Hey, I'm doing this because Abraham obeyed my voice... 00:21:00.02\00:21:05.69 kept my charge... 00:21:05.73\00:21:07.50 my commandments and my statutes and my laws. 00:21:07.53\00:21:10.83 Please listen to what I am saying. 00:21:10.87\00:21:13.44 Many people will say... 00:21:13.47\00:21:16.27 I've had so many people say this to me, 00:21:16.30\00:21:18.41 "Huh, you don't find the commandments of the Lord 00:21:18.44\00:21:20.98 in Genesis. " 00:21:21.01\00:21:22.34 You've got to remember those first eleven chapters of Genesis 00:21:22.38\00:21:25.38 are just a distilled overview of 2,000 years of history. 00:21:25.41\00:21:31.75 Where you see the commandments of God truly 00:21:31.79\00:21:35.32 is in the life of Abraham 00:21:35.36\00:21:37.06 and over and over it talks about how Abraham obeyed. 00:21:37.09\00:21:41.90 He was made righteous by faith... 00:21:41.93\00:21:44.40 but the fruit of that righteousness 00:21:44.43\00:21:46.87 was faithful obedience. 00:21:46.90\00:21:48.57 Okay, so... where were we in Genesis 28? 00:21:48.60\00:21:53.04 Okay, Genesis 28... He's renewing the covenant, 00:21:53.07\00:21:56.85 He says, "your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth. " 00:21:56.91\00:21:59.85 Same thing He said to Abraham. 00:21:59.88\00:22:01.68 Now, He's talking to Jacob, 00:22:01.72\00:22:03.49 "You shall spread abroad to the west and to the east, 00:22:03.52\00:22:05.75 and to the north and the south; 00:22:05.79\00:22:07.12 and in your seed 00:22:07.16\00:22:08.49 all the families of the earth shall be blessed. 00:22:08.52\00:22:10.73 Behold, I am with you and I will keep you 00:22:10.76\00:22:15.90 wherever you go. " 00:22:15.93\00:22:17.87 This is God as protector and provider 00:22:17.90\00:22:20.90 and His presence is constantly with him. 00:22:20.94\00:22:23.41 "I will bring you back to this land; 00:22:23.44\00:22:25.87 for I will not leave you 00:22:25.91\00:22:28.11 until I have done what I have spoken to you. " 00:22:28.14\00:22:30.88 Not one word of God's promises have ever failed. 00:22:30.91\00:22:33.21 Panel: That's right. 00:22:33.25\00:22:34.58 Shelley: So, going on in verse 16, 00:22:34.62\00:22:36.38 Genesis... now we'll read 28:16 through 22. 00:22:36.42\00:22:40.06 "Jacob awoke from his sleep" you know what he says? 00:22:40.09\00:22:44.46 "Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it. " 00:22:44.49\00:22:47.76 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:22:47.80\00:22:49.13 Do you realize that God promises 00:22:49.16\00:22:51.57 as long as you are with Him, He's with you. 00:22:51.63\00:22:54.44 God is in this place. Panel: That's right. 00:22:54.47\00:22:56.71 Shelley: Are we acknowledging it? 00:22:56.74\00:22:58.07 Do you acknowledge God's presence in your life? 00:22:58.11\00:23:01.78 "And he was afraid... " this is a healthy fear... 00:23:01.81\00:23:05.48 "and he said... " I love this... 00:23:05.51\00:23:07.45 "How awesome is this place! 00:23:07.48\00:23:11.32 This is none other than the house of God, 00:23:11.35\00:23:14.16 and this is the gate of heaven!" 00:23:14.19\00:23:16.69 Babylon... Babylon tried to set up a counterfeit: gate of heaven 00:23:16.73\00:23:22.26 but it's God coming down from heaven to us. 00:23:22.30\00:23:26.27 "Then Jacob rose early in the morning, 00:23:26.30\00:23:27.94 and took the stone that he put at his head, 00:23:27.97\00:23:29.87 set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it. 00:23:29.90\00:23:32.57 And he called the name of that place Bethel; 00:23:32.61\00:23:35.71 and it had previously been called Luz. 00:23:35.74\00:23:38.45 Then Jacob made a vow... " this is interesting... 00:23:38.48\00:23:41.02 he says, "If God will be with me, 00:23:41.05\00:23:43.32 and keep me in the way that I am going, 00:23:43.35\00:23:45.02 give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, 00:23:45.05\00:23:46.96 so that I may come back to my father's house in peace, 00:23:46.99\00:23:49.76 then the Lord shall be my God. " 00:23:49.79\00:23:51.79 He's just repeating what God told him He'd do. 00:23:51.83\00:23:54.70 "And this stone which I have set up as a pillar 00:23:54.73\00:23:57.13 shall be God's house, 00:23:57.17\00:23:58.50 and of all that You give me 00:23:58.53\00:24:00.74 I will surely give a tenth to You. " 00:24:00.77\00:24:03.57 So, again we see the idea of tithing... 00:24:03.61\00:24:08.14 the principle is here 00:24:08.18\00:24:10.71 before the rise of the nation of Israel. 00:24:10.75\00:24:13.11 Lomacang: Wow, thank you so much Shelley. 00:24:13.15\00:24:15.45 It's really wonderful how a lesson is unfolding 00:24:15.48\00:24:17.92 but you know we have three more days left 00:24:17.95\00:24:21.09 so don't go away, we'll be right back. 00:24:21.12\00:24:23.16 Music... 00:24:23.19\00:24:28.36 Ever wish you could watch a 3ABN Sabbath School Panel again 00:24:28.40\00:24:32.20 or share it on Facebook... 00:24:32.23\00:24:33.94 Instagram or Twitter? 00:24:33.97\00:24:35.44 Well, you can by visiting 3abnsabbathschoolpanel. com 00:24:35.47\00:24:40.34 A clean design makes it easy 00:24:40.38\00:24:42.98 to find the program you are looking for. 00:24:43.01\00:24:44.95 There are also links to the Adult Bible Study Guide 00:24:44.98\00:24:48.58 so you can follow along. 00:24:48.62\00:24:50.02 Sharing is easy. 00:24:50.05\00:24:51.55 Just click "Share" and choose your favorite Social Media. 00:24:51.59\00:24:54.82 Share a Link... Hmmm... 00:25:12.34\00:25:13.68 Ryan: It's interesting because we've just come through, 00:25:13.71\00:25:15.21 you know, Monday and Tuesday's Lesson... 00:25:15.24\00:25:16.78 or Sunday and Monday's Lesson 00:25:16.81\00:25:18.75 where we've learned about, you know, 00:25:18.78\00:25:20.98 Jacob in his early years 00:25:21.02\00:25:22.55 and, of course, now he's had this spiritual awakening 00:25:22.58\00:25:24.35 as Shelley just brought out. 00:25:24.39\00:25:26.19 He's had an encounter with God 00:25:26.22\00:25:27.96 and so, now he is spiritually awakened, right? 00:25:27.99\00:25:30.83 God is... God has promised him that He's going to... 00:25:30.86\00:25:34.06 He's made these promises to him 00:25:34.10\00:25:36.83 and now he is in relationship with God 00:25:36.87\00:25:38.83 but yet, he's still fleeing Esau right? 00:25:38.87\00:25:40.80 So, he's on his way out 00:25:40.84\00:25:42.54 and he's got to meet up with Uncle Laban 00:25:42.60\00:25:45.11 and, you know, I had been assigned 30 verses 00:25:45.17\00:25:47.61 on almost the entire chapter of Genesis chapter 29 00:25:47.64\00:25:52.55 and in Genesis chapter 29 verses 1 through 30, 00:25:52.58\00:25:57.39 we find that now he has made it to the land of Uncle Laban. 00:25:57.45\00:26:01.99 Now, I'm not going to read the first... 00:26:02.02\00:26:03.56 the first 15 verses or so, probably the first 14 verses... 00:26:03.59\00:26:06.96 this is where he's arrived... 00:26:07.00\00:26:08.43 he makes his way... he finds this well 00:26:08.46\00:26:10.70 and he sees some people coming at him... 00:26:10.73\00:26:12.93 obviously, he asked them there, he says, "Hey, is this... 00:26:12.97\00:26:15.24 do you know Laban... are you aware of Laban? 00:26:15.27\00:26:17.57 They say, "Yeah, we know Laban. " 00:26:17.61\00:26:19.11 "Is he well?" "He is well... " 00:26:19.14\00:26:20.48 all right... and so he realizes he's talking to Laban's people 00:26:20.51\00:26:23.04 and then out comes Rachel and he's... 00:26:23.11\00:26:25.85 he puts his eyes on Rachel for the first time 00:26:25.88\00:26:28.08 and he comes to find out that Rachel, of course, is... 00:26:28.12\00:26:30.55 is Laban's daughter... this is his cousin 00:26:30.59\00:26:32.72 and he goes and he embraces her and he weeps and he... 00:26:32.75\00:26:35.52 you know, praises God that he's found his family 00:26:35.56\00:26:38.39 but now we pick up in verse 15. 00:26:38.43\00:26:41.30 Right there in verse 14, it says that he stayed with him a month. 00:26:41.36\00:26:44.57 So, he's been with Uncle Laban and Rachel and the family 00:26:44.60\00:26:47.97 for about a month now 00:26:48.00\00:26:49.34 and now we pick up in verse 15. 00:26:49.37\00:26:51.27 This is where Jacob states his case for marrying Rachel 00:26:51.31\00:26:55.84 because he's fallen in love with Rachel. 00:26:55.88\00:26:57.38 So now it says in verse 15, 00:26:57.41\00:26:58.85 "Then Laban said to Jacob, 00:26:58.88\00:27:00.32 'Because you are my relative, 00:27:00.35\00:27:01.92 should you, therefore, serve me for nothing? 00:27:01.95\00:27:04.69 Tell me, what should your wages be?'" 00:27:04.72\00:27:07.52 This is Genesis chapter 29 beginning in verse 15, 00:27:07.56\00:27:10.13 and so, we just read verse 15, 00:27:10.16\00:27:12.83 he says, "Tell me, what your wages should be?" 00:27:12.86\00:27:14.46 Verse 16, "Now Laban had two daughters: 00:27:14.50\00:27:16.80 the name of the elder was Leah, 00:27:16.83\00:27:18.97 and the name of the younger was Rachel. " 00:27:19.00\00:27:20.97 And then verse 17, 00:27:21.00\00:27:22.64 Leah's eyes were delicate, 00:27:22.67\00:27:24.31 but Rachel was beautiful of form and appearance. 00:27:24.34\00:27:27.44 Now Jacob loved Rachel; 00:27:27.48\00:27:30.28 so he said, 'I will serve you seven years for Rachel 00:27:30.31\00:27:33.65 your younger daughter. ' 00:27:33.68\00:27:35.02 And Laban said, 'It is better that I give her to you 00:27:35.05\00:27:38.32 than that, I should give her to another man. '" 00:27:38.35\00:27:41.16 So, he's happy, "Sure, I'll give you... 00:27:41.19\00:27:42.52 oh no... you can take my daughter Rachel to be your wife" 00:27:42.56\00:27:45.16 but he says... "Stay with me. " 00:27:45.19\00:27:47.26 So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, 00:27:47.30\00:27:50.40 and they seemed only a few days to him 00:27:50.43\00:27:52.97 because of the love he had for her. 00:27:53.00\00:27:54.70 I like the... the seven years didn't seem like anything, 00:27:54.74\00:27:57.01 he's so in love with this girl, he's ready to marry her. 00:27:57.04\00:27:59.94 It just seemed like a few days and then verse 21 here, 00:27:59.97\00:28:02.84 it says, "Then Jacob said to Laban, 00:28:02.88\00:28:04.81 'Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, 00:28:04.85\00:28:07.12 that I may go in to her. " 00:28:07.15\00:28:08.62 He says, "Hey, Uncle Laban, time's up... 00:28:08.65\00:28:10.29 it's been seven years... I want my wife now. " 00:28:10.32\00:28:12.32 And so, verse 22, "And Laban gathered together 00:28:12.35\00:28:15.62 all the men of the place and made a feast. 00:28:15.66\00:28:18.06 Now it came to pass in the evening, 00:28:18.09\00:28:19.86 he took... " notice... "Leah his daughter 00:28:19.89\00:28:23.03 and brought her to Jacob; and he went in to her. 00:28:23.06\00:28:26.17 And Laban... " yes, he went in to her... 00:28:26.20\00:28:29.24 "And Laban gave his maid Zilpah 00:28:29.27\00:28:31.64 to his daughter Leah as a maid. 00:28:31.67\00:28:34.14 So it came to pass in the morning, 00:28:34.18\00:28:36.61 that behold, it was Leah. 00:28:36.64\00:28:38.81 And he said to Laban, 00:28:38.85\00:28:40.78 'What is this you have done to me? 00:28:40.82\00:28:43.42 Was it not for Rachel that I served you? 00:28:43.45\00:28:46.45 Why then have you... " here it is... ding, ding, ding, 00:28:46.49\00:28:49.62 "Why have you deceived me?" 00:28:49.66\00:28:51.89 Okay, now he's getting a little bit... 00:28:51.93\00:28:53.33 he's... he's getting a little bit of the same medicine 00:28:53.36\00:28:55.76 that he gave his brother and his father. 00:28:55.80\00:28:57.70 Okay, in verse 26: "And Laban said, 00:28:57.73\00:29:00.54 'It must not be done so in our country, 00:29:00.57\00:29:02.20 to give the younger before the firstborn. 00:29:02.24\00:29:03.84 Fulfill her week, and we can give you this one also 00:29:03.87\00:29:07.81 for the service which you will serve me 00:29:07.84\00:29:09.94 yet still another seven years. '" 00:29:09.98\00:29:12.38 And then, verse 28, 00:29:12.41\00:29:13.75 "And Jacob did so and he fulfilled her week. 00:29:13.78\00:29:15.62 So he gave him his daughter Rachel as a wife. 00:29:15.65\00:29:17.95 And Laban gave his maid Bilhah 00:29:17.99\00:29:21.22 to his daughter Rachel as a maid. 00:29:21.26\00:29:23.26 Then Jacob also went to Rachel... went into Rachel 00:29:23.29\00:29:26.29 and he also loved Rachel more than Leah. 00:29:26.33\00:29:28.50 And he served with Laban yet still another seven years. " 00:29:28.53\00:29:30.97 So when it says here that he fulfilled her week... 00:29:31.00\00:29:32.80 this is customary... 00:29:32.83\00:29:34.17 a marriage celebration in the Biblical days 00:29:34.20\00:29:36.30 and I think, even in the culture still today, 00:29:36.34\00:29:38.91 of Jewish Orthodox... 00:29:38.97\00:29:40.31 we see very clearly that it's... 00:29:40.34\00:29:42.21 it's a celebration of a week-long 00:29:42.24\00:29:44.08 and so, basically, Jacob did not technically have to wait 00:29:44.11\00:29:47.68 another seven years before he was given... 00:29:47.75\00:29:49.95 he waited to fulfill the marriage ceremonial rights 00:29:49.98\00:29:52.82 of the seven days with Leah 00:29:52.85\00:29:55.69 and then after the seven days, 00:29:55.72\00:29:57.06 Laban honored his... his words... 00:29:57.09\00:29:58.73 he gives Rachel to him 00:29:58.76\00:30:00.10 but yet he still had to stay and work another seven years 00:30:00.13\00:30:03.30 for Rachel in this case. 00:30:03.33\00:30:06.07 And so, you know, it's interesting here because 00:30:06.10\00:30:08.57 you know, you would... in today's time, you would... 00:30:08.60\00:30:11.61 you know, you hear people say, "Boy!" you know... 00:30:11.64\00:30:14.64 and not to be disrespectful here 00:30:14.68\00:30:16.98 but back in my day... in my heathen days, 00:30:17.01\00:30:18.81 you would hear people say, you know, slang 00:30:18.85\00:30:20.42 and different things... and it was often inappropriate 00:30:20.45\00:30:22.48 and some people will say, you know, 00:30:22.52\00:30:23.95 "Karma is a bad word... " 00:30:23.99\00:30:25.45 and they would, you know, say something like that. 00:30:25.49\00:30:26.99 A lot of people put this... "Oh Karma... it's all Karma. " 00:30:27.02\00:30:29.16 Let me tell you something, that's a Hinduistic term... 00:30:29.19\00:30:30.56 Hinduistic concept... 00:30:30.63\00:30:31.96 it's full of Spiritualism... has nothing... 00:30:31.99\00:30:33.96 actually, the truth is the Bible pre-dates this... 00:30:34.00\00:30:36.87 this Hinduistic teaching of Karma... 00:30:36.90\00:30:39.67 Karma is not a real thing 00:30:39.70\00:30:41.04 but in this case, the Bible passage that clarifies very much 00:30:41.07\00:30:44.71 the principle is that, "You reap what you sow. " 00:30:44.74\00:30:47.11 And in this case, Jacob was reaping what he sowed. 00:30:47.14\00:30:49.48 Even though he's in relationship with God, 00:30:49.51\00:30:51.25 he still has a lot of growing... 00:30:51.28\00:30:52.98 he still has a lot of learning 00:30:53.01\00:30:54.35 and in this case, it's interesting 00:30:54.38\00:30:55.78 because back in the day when I was a kid and I... 00:30:55.82\00:30:57.59 you will hear still still hear people say it today, 00:30:57.62\00:30:59.09 "Boy, they can... they can dish it out 00:30:59.12\00:31:00.89 but they can't take it... " 00:31:00.96\00:31:02.29 and that was the case of Jacob. 00:31:02.32\00:31:03.66 He... he could dish it out... 00:31:03.69\00:31:05.19 he was all about deceiving is father and his brother 00:31:05.23\00:31:07.43 to get that... to get that blessing 00:31:07.46\00:31:09.10 but yet now, when he is the one being deceived... 00:31:09.13\00:31:12.40 when the deceiver is being deceived, 00:31:12.43\00:31:14.97 now, it's not so fun and games. 00:31:15.00\00:31:16.40 You know, it's interesting 00:31:16.44\00:31:17.97 because as... as I was reading this story, 00:31:18.01\00:31:19.34 I took away just some lessons... 00:31:19.37\00:31:20.71 just some very simple but... but practical lessons 00:31:20.74\00:31:23.95 that we also as Christians today... 00:31:23.98\00:31:25.91 we can glean... we can learn from this 00:31:25.95\00:31:27.72 and that is the fact that, you know, 00:31:27.78\00:31:29.52 there's a lot of people that are so selfish and self-centered. 00:31:29.55\00:31:32.49 Jacob while he's now in this new relationship with God, 00:31:32.52\00:31:35.32 he's got a whole lot of selfishness 00:31:35.36\00:31:36.93 that needs to be rooted out. 00:31:36.96\00:31:38.29 He's still kind of into himself... 00:31:38.33\00:31:39.69 he still expects the world to revolve around him 00:31:39.76\00:31:42.10 and in this case, you know, he's starting to see that 00:31:42.13\00:31:44.50 when he's now with Uncle Laban, things... you know, 00:31:44.53\00:31:46.87 it works more by Uncle Laban's rules 00:31:46.90\00:31:48.24 and Uncle Laban calls the shots 00:31:48.27\00:31:49.67 and in this case, he got tricked by Uncle Laban 00:31:49.70\00:31:53.07 and it's interesting because Matthew chapter 7... 00:31:53.11\00:31:54.78 kind of on the same point that I made earlier... 00:31:54.81\00:31:56.44 you know, that you reap what you sow, 00:31:56.48\00:31:58.28 Jesus even confirmed in Matthew chapter 7 00:31:58.31\00:32:00.08 verses 1 through 5, He says, 00:32:00.12\00:32:01.55 "Judge not, that you be not judged. 00:32:01.58\00:32:03.52 For with what judgment you judge, 00:32:03.55\00:32:05.42 you will be judged; 00:32:05.45\00:32:06.79 and with what measure you use, 00:32:06.82\00:32:09.32 it will be measured back to you. " 00:32:09.36\00:32:11.89 So, now look at Jacob, he's all upset... 00:32:11.93\00:32:13.46 he's mad and he's angry... "Whoa... whoa... whoa... whoa... 00:32:13.50\00:32:15.06 what have you done to me? you've deceived me. " 00:32:15.10\00:32:17.07 He dished it out back here 00:32:17.10\00:32:18.73 but now, he's on the receiving end of this, 00:32:18.77\00:32:20.10 he can't handle it 00:32:20.14\00:32:21.47 and he's now wanting to pull that... that... that speck 00:32:21.50\00:32:25.11 out of Uncle Laban's eye, 00:32:25.14\00:32:26.47 but notice what Jesus goes on to say here, 00:32:26.51\00:32:27.94 again, this is that powerful sermon on the mount, 00:32:27.98\00:32:29.94 he says, "And do you not... 00:32:29.98\00:32:31.31 do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, 00:32:31.35\00:32:33.38 but do not consider the plank in your own... " 00:32:33.42\00:32:35.48 Jacob had a big old plank... 00:32:35.52\00:32:37.15 a deceiving plan in his own eye 00:32:37.19\00:32:38.72 that needed to be rooted out. 00:32:38.75\00:32:40.22 In this case, He says, 00:32:40.26\00:32:41.59 "Do you not consider the plank in your own eye? 00:32:41.62\00:32:44.29 Or how you can say to your brother, 00:32:44.39\00:32:46.29 'Let me remove the speck from your eye'; 00:32:46.33\00:32:48.06 and look, a plank is in your own eye? 00:32:48.10\00:32:50.10 Hypocrite!" Jesus says, 00:32:50.13\00:32:51.47 "First remove the plank from your own eye, 00:32:51.50\00:32:53.57 then you will see clearly 00:32:53.60\00:32:55.07 to remove the speck from your brother's eye. " 00:32:55.10\00:32:56.97 And so, we see that, you know, 00:32:57.01\00:32:58.34 Jacob is... he's starting the sanctification process 00:32:58.37\00:33:00.68 and it ultimately... in this situation... 00:33:00.71\00:33:03.24 ends with him now being deceived. 00:33:03.28\00:33:05.11 You know, we've got to be careful because this kind of 00:33:05.15\00:33:07.42 self-deceptive spirit often will kind of infiltrate our heart, 00:33:07.45\00:33:12.69 our mind... it will even filtrate the church. 00:33:12.72\00:33:14.42 Sometimes, we've got to do some self-examination... 00:33:14.49\00:33:16.86 take some spiritual inventory of our own heart 00:33:16.89\00:33:19.53 because I can tell you, my Friends, the backbiting 00:33:19.56\00:33:22.16 and the gossiping and the plotting 00:33:22.20\00:33:24.10 and the conspiring and secrecy... 00:33:24.13\00:33:26.00 it is... it often floods in the ranks of the churches, 00:33:26.03\00:33:28.87 it often floods in the... in the home... 00:33:28.90\00:33:30.61 and this type of thing ought not have any place for a Christian 00:33:30.64\00:33:33.51 and in a Christian's life. 00:33:33.54\00:33:34.88 Ecclesiastes chapter 12 verses 13 and 14, 00:33:34.91\00:33:37.91 we're talking about self-deception. 00:33:37.98\00:33:39.41 Jacob was self-deceived... 00:33:39.48\00:33:41.75 but now he's on the receiving end of deception, 00:33:41.78\00:33:44.09 notice what Ecclesiastes 12 verses 13 through 14 says, 00:33:44.12\00:33:47.02 "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: 00:33:47.06\00:33:48.92 Fear God and keep His commandments, 00:33:48.96\00:33:51.03 for this is the whole duty of man. " 00:33:51.06\00:33:53.13 But then verse 14, 00:33:53.16\00:33:54.50 "For God shall bring every work into judgment... " 00:33:54.53\00:33:57.27 do you think God had forgotten about what Jacob had done 00:33:57.30\00:33:59.80 and that there wasn't a lesson to be learned by that? 00:33:59.83\00:34:01.94 "God will bring every work into judgment, 00:34:01.97\00:34:04.11 with every secret thing, 00:34:04.14\00:34:05.94 whether it be good or whether it be evil. " 00:34:05.97\00:34:08.14 Jacob had conspired with his mother to deceive. 00:34:08.18\00:34:11.41 Now, Laban had conspired to deceive Jacob and so... 00:34:11.45\00:34:15.45 the deceiver had been deceived, in this sense. 00:34:15.48\00:34:17.62 There's a few things that we can learn... I'm... 00:34:17.65\00:34:19.55 I'm actually running out of time, 00:34:19.62\00:34:20.96 I don't have enough time to read the rest of this 00:34:20.99\00:34:22.69 but, you know, we need to understand 00:34:22.72\00:34:24.69 that we have to be... 00:34:24.73\00:34:26.06 we have to place ourselves in a humbling state. 00:34:26.09\00:34:28.16 Jacob was humbled in this moment, 00:34:28.20\00:34:30.10 don't think he wasn't. 00:34:30.13\00:34:31.47 He was humbled in this moment as we all often are. 00:34:31.50\00:34:34.64 Sometimes, we've got to eat some crow... 00:34:34.67\00:34:36.00 sometimes we got to... you know... 00:34:36.04\00:34:37.37 we got to... we got to take a little bit 00:34:37.41\00:34:38.91 of what we've dished out 00:34:38.97\00:34:40.31 but you know what? It's all for growth... 00:34:40.34\00:34:42.04 if we have the Holy Spirit leading and guiding us... 00:34:42.08\00:34:44.28 if Jesus Christ is in our heart and mind, 00:34:44.31\00:34:46.45 sometimes, we might have to take a little bit 00:34:46.48\00:34:48.58 of what we've dished out 00:34:48.62\00:34:49.95 but we will learn and grow in the process. 00:34:49.98\00:34:51.35 That's why I love 2nd Chronicles chapter 7 verse 14, 00:34:51.39\00:34:54.42 one of my favorite texts, 00:34:54.49\00:34:56.06 God just pouring out His heart here... 00:34:56.09\00:34:57.63 "If my people who are called by My name will humble themselves, 00:34:57.66\00:35:02.66 and pray and seek My face, 00:35:02.70\00:35:04.53 and turn from their wicked ways, 00:35:04.57\00:35:06.70 then I will hear from heaven, 00:35:06.74\00:35:08.20 and I will forgive their sin and heal their land. " 00:35:08.24\00:35:11.17 Panel: Amen... amen... amen. 00:35:11.21\00:35:12.77 James: Thank you, Ryan, that was a perfect set up 00:35:12.81\00:35:14.41 for the lesson that I have. 00:35:14.44\00:35:16.31 My name is James Rafferty and I have Wednesday's lesson, 00:35:16.34\00:35:18.61 which is entitled: The Blessing of the Family 00:35:18.65\00:35:20.92 and it's actually a continuation of the same chapter 00:35:20.95\00:35:23.82 that Ryan had in chapter 29, the last few verses, 00:35:23.85\00:35:26.86 then we're going to go right into chapter 30. 00:35:26.89\00:35:29.82 See, for Jacob... the last seven years, the Quarterly says, 00:35:29.86\00:35:32.73 of his exile were a burden 00:35:32.76\00:35:34.36 and yet they were also the most fruitful years 00:35:34.40\00:35:36.67 because in them, Jacob will father 11 of his 12 children 00:35:36.70\00:35:41.27 who will become the ancestors of God's people. 00:35:41.30\00:35:44.47 Okay, so, Genesis chapter 29 verses 31 to chapter 30 verse 22 00:35:44.51\00:35:50.75 is the section we're going to be looking at 00:35:50.78\00:35:52.25 and we can't read all of those verses, 00:35:52.28\00:35:53.75 there's a lot there... 00:35:53.78\00:35:55.12 but I just want to start by saying that 00:35:55.15\00:35:57.92 we are dysfunctional. 00:35:57.95\00:36:00.26 Now, sometimes, we think about dysfunction... 00:36:00.29\00:36:02.66 we think, "Oh, they're dysfunctional... 00:36:02.69\00:36:04.43 they are dysfunctional... 00:36:04.46\00:36:05.79 that family over there is dysfunctional 00:36:05.83\00:36:07.66 and that church over there is dysfunctional. " 00:36:07.70\00:36:09.93 No, we as human beings are quite dysfunctional 00:36:09.96\00:36:12.17 and this story... 00:36:12.23\00:36:13.84 oh, I've struggled with this story for years, 00:36:13.87\00:36:15.80 I mean, I really have, you know, 00:36:15.84\00:36:17.24 all that we're about to just touch on here 00:36:17.27\00:36:19.21 and I'm realizing God... 00:36:19.24\00:36:21.64 a God of grace... a God of mercy... 00:36:21.68\00:36:23.58 a God of love is reaching down into our dysfunction. 00:36:23.61\00:36:27.42 He's healing us... He's helping us... 00:36:27.45\00:36:29.42 He's molding us... 00:36:29.45\00:36:30.79 He's rebuking us... 00:36:30.82\00:36:32.15 He's transforming us... 00:36:32.19\00:36:33.52 there's a lot of hope in this story. 00:36:33.56\00:36:35.96 Let's read just a couple of the highlights here, 00:36:35.99\00:36:38.86 Ryan, you ended up with the verse where it says, 00:36:38.89\00:36:41.73 that... that Leah was hated 00:36:41.76\00:36:45.37 or Rachel was loved more than Leah. 00:36:45.43\00:36:47.27 I've got the verse verse 31 where it says, 00:36:47.30\00:36:50.07 "And when the Lord saw that Leah was hated... " 00:36:50.11\00:36:52.81 so, your verse said that Rachel was loved more than Leah 00:36:52.84\00:36:56.24 but my verse says... 00:36:56.28\00:36:57.61 "And when the Lord saw that Leah was hated... " 00:36:57.65\00:36:59.31 now I just want to stop there just for a second. 00:36:59.35\00:37:01.05 "When the Lord saw that Leah was hated... " 00:37:01.08\00:37:04.59 now, we're going to be looking at this from God's perspective, 00:37:04.65\00:37:06.99 we're not going to be looking at this from a human perspective, 00:37:07.02\00:37:09.29 this chapter is all about how God sees us 00:37:09.32\00:37:12.46 and how God sees things. 00:37:12.49\00:37:14.16 So, when the Lord saw that Leah was hated, 00:37:14.20\00:37:16.77 He opened her womb but Rachel... 00:37:16.80\00:37:19.93 Rachel was barren. 00:37:19.97\00:37:22.37 "And Leah conceived and bare a son... " verse 32, 00:37:22.40\00:37:24.74 "and called his name Reuben; 00:37:24.77\00:37:26.11 for she said, "Surely the Lord has looked upon my affliction. " 00:37:26.14\00:37:30.05 Whoa, her affliction... what's her affliction? 00:37:30.08\00:37:31.41 "Now, therefore, my husband will love me. " 00:37:31.45\00:37:32.95 She just wanted to be loved. Panel: Yeah. 00:37:32.98\00:37:34.65 James: She just wanted to be loved. 00:37:34.68\00:37:36.02 Now, think about this... 00:37:36.05\00:37:37.52 Jacob was a deceiver because his mother... Laban's sister 00:37:37.55\00:37:46.59 put him up to it. 00:37:46.63\00:37:47.96 He didn't come up with this by himself, right? 00:37:48.00\00:37:50.20 It was Rebecca... and he was kind of like, 00:37:50.27\00:37:52.50 "No... no... I don't think we should do that. " 00:37:52.53\00:37:53.87 "No, we need to do this... we need to do this. " 00:37:53.90\00:37:55.24 Panel: Oh oh... James: Now we've got Leah. 00:37:55.27\00:37:57.31 Leah was a deceiver because her father... Rebecca's brother 00:37:57.34\00:38:06.38 put her up to it, right, 00:38:06.41\00:38:07.88 so Jacob was really kind of caught in the middle 00:38:07.92\00:38:10.89 and Leah was kind of caught in the middle. 00:38:10.92\00:38:12.59 You know, they're both influenced by these two parents 00:38:12.62\00:38:15.36 right? And they're caught in the middle 00:38:15.39\00:38:17.26 and so, Jacob should be able to empathize a little bit 00:38:17.29\00:38:20.50 with Leah's situation but he doesn't. 00:38:20.53\00:38:23.06 But who does? 00:38:23.10\00:38:24.43 When humans can't empathize with us... 00:38:24.47\00:38:26.53 when humans can't step into our relationship by experience, 00:38:26.60\00:38:29.20 God can... God always steps in 00:38:29.24\00:38:31.84 and He always picks up where humans leave off. 00:38:31.87\00:38:35.34 So, the Lord saw that she was hated and gave her a son 00:38:35.38\00:38:39.95 and she called his name Simeon... 00:38:39.98\00:38:41.35 she conceived again and bare a son and... 00:38:41.38\00:38:42.85 and said, "This time my husband will be joined unto me, 00:38:42.88\00:38:45.75 because I've born him three sons... " 00:38:45.79\00:38:47.12 oh, she was just so excited... 00:38:47.16\00:38:48.49 one son after another was coming... 00:38:48.52\00:38:49.86 she conceived again and bare a son 00:38:49.89\00:38:51.56 and she said, "Now I will praise the Lord. " 00:38:51.59\00:38:53.26 What has just happened? 00:38:53.29\00:38:55.30 She's transitioned from her relationship with her husband 00:38:55.36\00:38:58.53 to a relationship with God. 00:38:58.57\00:39:00.37 And that's where God wants to get us... 00:39:00.40\00:39:01.84 that's where God wants to get us. 00:39:01.87\00:39:03.27 He wants to get us away from our desire to have the love 00:39:03.30\00:39:07.58 and the companionship 00:39:07.61\00:39:08.94 and the support of people 00:39:08.98\00:39:10.31 and first and foremost, 00:39:10.35\00:39:11.68 He wants to get us to the place where we have the love 00:39:11.71\00:39:13.52 and the companionship and the support of God. 00:39:13.55\00:39:14.88 Panel: Amen. 00:39:14.92\00:39:16.25 James: He is going to be there for us 00:39:16.28\00:39:17.62 in all of these struggles... in all of these difficulties. 00:39:17.65\00:39:19.29 Panel: Amen. 00:39:19.32\00:39:20.66 James: "Now, when Rachel... " verse 1 of chapter 30 00:39:20.69\00:39:22.76 "saw that she bore Jacob no children, 00:39:22.79\00:39:25.36 Rachel envied her sister. " 00:39:25.39\00:39:27.10 You see, what's going to happen here 00:39:27.13\00:39:28.46 in this family dynamic? 00:39:28.50\00:39:29.83 Rachel should be happy for her sister... 00:39:29.86\00:39:31.20 she should be saying, 00:39:31.23\00:39:32.57 "Praise the Lord that you've got all these kids. " 00:39:32.60\00:39:33.94 But now, we can't do that, you see, 00:39:33.97\00:39:35.34 we're all dysfunctional, we can't do that. 00:39:35.37\00:39:37.04 She's envying her sister and then she says to Jacob, 00:39:37.11\00:39:39.14 "Give me a child or I'm going to die... " 00:39:39.17\00:39:40.88 and Jacob says, "Wait... wait a minute... " 00:39:40.91\00:39:42.24 so, he gets angry at her... 00:39:42.28\00:39:43.61 this is all about dysfunctional relationship... 00:39:43.65\00:39:46.85 dysfunctional family relationships 00:39:46.88\00:39:48.58 and then, it's all about how God works through that 00:39:48.62\00:39:50.89 and overrules all that. 00:39:50.92\00:39:52.25 So, she goes to her handmaid 00:39:52.29\00:39:54.06 and her handmaid gives Jacob a child 00:39:54.09\00:39:56.66 and then, of course, she claims that... 00:39:56.69\00:39:59.19 Rachel claims that for herself and then she... 00:39:59.23\00:40:01.26 Bilhah gives her another child so she has two from Bilhah 00:40:01.30\00:40:05.67 and then, Rachel says, 00:40:05.70\00:40:07.04 "You know, with great wrestling's I have wrestled with 00:40:07.07\00:40:08.67 my sister, and I have prevailed. " 00:40:08.70\00:40:10.04 You're not wrestling with your sister... 00:40:10.07\00:40:11.41 you're wrestling with yourself. 00:40:11.44\00:40:12.77 You're wrestling with your own heart... your own fallen heart 00:40:12.81\00:40:14.81 who has this envy inside of it against your sister 00:40:14.84\00:40:17.81 who has just found herself caught in the middle... 00:40:17.85\00:40:20.32 just like Jacob found himself caught in the middle. 00:40:20.35\00:40:22.75 Let's look at this from God's perspective. 00:40:22.78\00:40:24.22 And so, as you continue on through the story, 00:40:24.25\00:40:26.89 you see handmaids coming in... 00:40:26.92\00:40:28.26 you see sons being born to Jacob... 00:40:28.29\00:40:29.79 Jacob finally gets to the place where Leah is... well... 00:40:29.82\00:40:35.76 God listens to Leah over and over again, 00:40:35.80\00:40:39.33 until finally we're told in verse 22 00:40:39.37\00:40:42.00 that God remembered Rachel and God harkened unto her 00:40:42.04\00:40:45.34 and opened her womb. 00:40:45.37\00:40:47.28 Leah's come to the place where she's almost like 00:40:47.31\00:40:50.08 completely satisfied like, "God has really blessed me... 00:40:50.11\00:40:52.18 God has really given to me. " 00:40:52.21\00:40:53.55 And sometimes unfortunately it's not until we are satisfied 00:40:53.58\00:40:58.39 in our relationship with God 00:40:58.42\00:41:00.29 that we can really and truly be a blessing to others. 00:41:00.32\00:41:02.72 Panel: That's right... hmmm... hmmm... 00:41:02.76\00:41:04.09 James: As long as we're still hungering... 00:41:04.13\00:41:05.46 we're still dysfunctional... 00:41:05.49\00:41:06.83 we're still craving for some kind of security... 00:41:06.86\00:41:09.53 we are unable to flow out to others 00:41:09.56\00:41:12.90 in the way that God wants us to. 00:41:12.93\00:41:16.17 But if we fill up with the Holy Spirit 00:41:16.20\00:41:18.57 in the presence of God that can overflow 00:41:18.61\00:41:20.94 and we can be a blessing to others, 00:41:20.98\00:41:22.51 instead of being envious and jealous 00:41:22.54\00:41:24.05 and hateful toward others. 00:41:24.08\00:41:26.08 So much hate... so much envy... so much insecurity... 00:41:26.11\00:41:29.18 manipulation taking place in this dysfunctional family, 00:41:29.22\00:41:32.39 and yet, God overrules with His grace and with His love. 00:41:32.42\00:41:35.56 None of the members find themselves enemies of God. 00:41:35.59\00:41:38.99 God loves them... rather they are recipients of His mercy... 00:41:39.06\00:41:43.67 of His understanding... of His sympathy... 00:41:43.70\00:41:45.10 of His blessing. 00:41:45.13\00:41:46.57 This reveals... to me... 00:41:46.60\00:41:47.94 this reveals more of the character of God 00:41:47.97\00:41:49.30 because really, that's what the whole story is about, right? 00:41:49.34\00:41:51.87 God has been misrepresented 00:41:51.91\00:41:53.78 and God is vindicating Himself... 00:41:53.84\00:41:55.51 His character is being vindicated... 00:41:55.54\00:41:57.18 He's going to say... you know, I struggle with this, 00:41:57.21\00:41:59.75 like, "Why did God bless Leah? 00:41:59.78\00:42:01.15 Leah deceived Jacob... why did God bless Leah?" 00:42:01.18\00:42:03.39 That was my struggle. 00:42:03.42\00:42:04.75 But when we look... 00:42:04.79\00:42:06.12 when we step back and we look at the big picture here, 00:42:06.15\00:42:08.32 Leah's caught in the middle 00:42:08.36\00:42:09.69 just like Jacob was caught in the middle. 00:42:09.72\00:42:11.09 God loves Leah... God loves Jacob 00:42:11.13\00:42:12.73 and God loves Rachel 00:42:12.76\00:42:14.23 and God loves Laban 00:42:14.26\00:42:15.60 and God loves Rebecca. 00:42:15.63\00:42:16.97 There are some consequences here they're going to reap... 00:42:17.00\00:42:18.67 you know, Laban doesn't see his kids anymore... 00:42:18.70\00:42:20.80 Rebecca didn't get to see Jacob ever again... 00:42:20.84\00:42:22.84 there are some consequences that are going to come to us 00:42:22.87\00:42:25.64 when we act out like this but God works through it all 00:42:25.67\00:42:28.51 to bless and to help us. 00:42:28.54\00:42:30.01 He loves us... He loves each one of us 00:42:30.05\00:42:32.11 and He works through all of our insecurity 00:42:32.15\00:42:34.18 and all of our dysfunction 00:42:34.22\00:42:35.55 and the dysfunction of our family 00:42:35.58\00:42:37.85 and of our relationships and of our world 00:42:37.92\00:42:40.06 to reveal His character of love 00:42:40.09\00:42:41.89 and that's really what heals us... 00:42:41.92\00:42:43.49 that's really what... what brings us back 00:42:43.53\00:42:46.06 to... to where we need to be. 00:42:46.09\00:42:48.50 So, this great controversy is... 00:42:48.53\00:42:50.87 is all about this misrepresentation of character 00:42:50.90\00:42:53.23 especially the character of God 00:42:53.27\00:42:54.60 and how God is working to unravel... to un... 00:42:54.64\00:42:58.34 to reveal... the revelation of Jesus Christ. 00:42:58.37\00:43:02.04 God is working to bring us the revelation of Jesus Christ, 00:43:02.08\00:43:04.78 the last book of the Bible is the revelation of Jesus Christ 00:43:04.81\00:43:07.48 and this is really what redeems us. 00:43:07.52\00:43:09.32 This is what brings us back to the image of God 00:43:09.35\00:43:11.79 it's a revelation of His character. 00:43:11.82\00:43:13.86 So... so, you know I struggle with the sympathy for Leah 00:43:13.89\00:43:16.69 and then I started seeing this big picture 00:43:16.73\00:43:18.13 and I started realizing, "Wow! she was caught in the middle" 00:43:18.16\00:43:20.33 and really, we're all caught in the middle, aren't we? 00:43:20.36\00:43:22.46 Each one of us 00:43:22.50\00:43:23.83 and God knows our struggles, 00:43:23.87\00:43:25.33 he knows our sorrows like no other person can. 00:43:25.37\00:43:28.40 It reminded me of the idea that, you know, 00:43:28.44\00:43:31.07 we can't judge others until we walk in their footsteps, right? 00:43:31.11\00:43:35.14 And I was walking in the footsteps of Leah, 00:43:35.18\00:43:37.81 you know, I was able to relate to her, you know, 00:43:37.85\00:43:39.85 and... and I thought, "Why did she do that?" 00:43:39.88\00:43:41.82 But now, I realize... "father-in-law. " 00:47:30.65\00:47:32.25 Ryan: That's right. 00:47:32.28\00:47:33.62 Kenny: Can we just say that too? Ryan: Yes, we can. 00:47:33.65\00:47:35.42 Kenny: Well, I'm just asking the question, 00:47:35.45\00:47:36.79 well... right... it ended up being... didn't it? 00:47:36.82\00:47:38.62 Uncle... so I don't want to say the wrong thing here, 00:47:38.65\00:47:40.76 but there's a lot of deceiving going on 00:47:40.79\00:47:42.46 and interesting... Jacob knew he was being deceived. 00:47:42.49\00:47:46.90 Ryan: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:47:46.93\00:47:48.26 Kenny: He understood what was taking place 00:47:48.30\00:47:49.93 but he didn't really put up a fight... 00:47:49.96\00:47:51.30 he didn't resist it... 00:47:51.33\00:47:52.67 it was some unfair demands and if you're like me, 00:47:52.70\00:47:55.17 if you think something's unfair, 00:47:55.20\00:47:56.54 sometimes you have something to say about it 00:47:56.57\00:47:58.87 and maybe not... 00:47:58.91\00:48:00.24 he... he didn't say anything to really... about it. 00:48:00.28\00:48:02.14 and it... it... it... 00:48:02.18\00:48:03.51 but it seems to go against his character 00:48:03.55\00:48:04.98 and so, we have to look kind of deeply into that. 00:48:05.01\00:48:07.65 Maybe he should have... 00:48:07.68\00:48:09.08 maybe he should have just, you know, 00:48:09.12\00:48:11.02 made an attempt to wheel and deal. 00:48:11.05\00:48:12.92 Isn't that right? 00:48:12.95\00:48:14.29 When Laban said, "This is what I'm going to require 00:48:14.32\00:48:15.69 for this one and that one... " 00:48:15.72\00:48:17.06 "Hey, wait a minute, let's just do half that time, 00:48:17.09\00:48:19.43 what do you say, man?" 00:48:19.46\00:48:20.80 Isn't that kind of what most of us would do? 00:48:20.83\00:48:22.30 "Why do seven... I can do three and a half" 00:48:22.33\00:48:24.03 you know, so, bargain... 00:48:24.07\00:48:26.03 when you go to a store, you bargain sometime, 00:48:26.07\00:48:28.87 right, you work on it, 00:48:28.90\00:48:30.24 you try to get a deal... cut some time off. 00:48:30.27\00:48:31.64 But, you know, well... 00:48:31.67\00:48:33.54 Genesis 30:25 and 26 said... time for Jacob to leave 00:48:33.58\00:48:37.15 Jacob said to Laban, notice this "Send me away... " 00:48:37.18\00:48:41.12 it's like he was tied there and he was... 00:48:41.15\00:48:44.22 commitment and so on, 00:48:44.25\00:48:45.62 he said, "Send me away, that I may go unto mine own place, 00:48:45.65\00:48:48.72 and to my own country. " 00:48:48.76\00:48:50.19 He realized there was a time for him to move on. 00:48:50.23\00:48:52.23 Ryan: That's right. 00:48:52.26\00:48:53.70 Kenny: It's something for him to do... 00:48:53.73\00:48:55.06 God still had a plan for him. 00:48:55.10\00:48:56.53 Our lesson brings it out that Jacob is concerned about 00:48:56.56\00:48:59.43 setting up his own house 00:48:59.50\00:49:01.80 which I think most of us probably are, 00:49:01.84\00:49:03.81 don't you think... sometimes in our life, 00:49:03.84\00:49:05.74 we're kind of interested in maybe getting out on our 00:49:05.77\00:49:08.24 own and... and, you know, 00:49:08.28\00:49:09.68 picking up some things and doing... 00:49:09.71\00:49:11.05 in Genesis 30 verse 30, 00:49:11.08\00:49:13.11 it says, "After all Jacob wanted to be on his own. " 00:49:13.15\00:49:16.65 That's what Genesis 30:30 talks about. 00:49:16.69\00:49:18.32 He wanted to be on his own 00:49:18.35\00:49:19.69 and he felt that he had fulfilled his agreement 00:49:19.72\00:49:22.16 and most of us, if we really feel like we have fulfilled 00:49:22.19\00:49:25.43 the agreement that we made with somebody. 00:49:25.46\00:49:26.90 You make an agreement with the bank... 00:49:26.93\00:49:28.30 you buy a house when you make that last payment. 00:49:28.33\00:49:30.50 There's an agreement there... come on... give me that deed... 00:49:30.53\00:49:33.17 you know what I mean, you... you... you want to say, 00:49:33.20\00:49:35.34 "Okay, the agreement has been fulfilled" 00:49:35.37\00:49:37.61 and so, now he begins to plead his case 00:49:37.64\00:49:39.77 and if you don't mind... you know, lot of reading... 00:49:39.81\00:49:42.21 everybody's talking about a lot of reading to do 00:49:42.24\00:49:43.85 so, I'm going to forebear and go with that 00:49:43.88\00:49:46.31 but I... I'll tell you where I'm from, Genesis 31:41, 00:49:46.38\00:49:49.48 it's actually just one verse 00:49:49.52\00:49:50.85 but if you allow me to do some paraphrasing here 00:49:50.89\00:49:53.32 and then if I'm off somebody can tell me, right? 00:49:53.36\00:49:55.82 You're going to go along with it. 00:49:55.86\00:49:57.19 We don't want to get off the record here 00:49:57.23\00:49:58.56 but, you know, when we're wheeling and dealing 00:49:58.59\00:50:00.90 in this case... 00:50:00.93\00:50:02.30 when he's pleading his case, right, 00:50:02.33\00:50:04.40 because he's... he's... it's time to leave 00:50:04.43\00:50:06.47 but you think Laban was going to let him leave easily? 00:50:06.50\00:50:09.10 You think he's going to say, "Oh, well... " 00:50:09.14\00:50:10.47 remember he... he's had his socks blessed off, 00:50:10.51\00:50:12.77 isn't that right? Ryan: That's right. 00:50:12.81\00:50:14.91 Kenny: He became a rich man because of Jacob, 00:50:14.94\00:50:17.95 is that not true? 00:50:17.98\00:50:19.31 Ryan: That's true. Panel: True. 00:50:19.35\00:50:20.68 Kenny: And you're not going to let that... golden egg... 00:50:20.72\00:50:22.92 you're just not going to let that out... 00:50:22.95\00:50:25.69 you're going to try to wheel and deal and bring him back... 00:50:25.72\00:50:27.46 find something here, so let's just, 00:50:27.49\00:50:29.49 Genesis 31: 41 says, I want to say... if I could do, 00:50:29.52\00:50:33.16 "Look, Dad... " he's going to talk to him... 00:50:33.19\00:50:35.43 you know, made father-in-law... they had a little more respect 00:50:35.46\00:50:37.60 but now-a-days, you're going... and you might call him, "Pops" 00:50:37.63\00:50:39.77 I'm not sure about this... 00:50:39.80\00:50:41.24 "Look, Dad... now look here I've... 00:50:41.30\00:50:43.47 I've been with you for 20 years... 00:50:43.51\00:50:45.64 I have been here 20 years... and really without a complaint" 00:50:45.67\00:50:49.21 right... ah ha... 00:50:49.24\00:50:50.75 "I've worked hard... I mean I worked for 14 years 00:50:50.78\00:50:53.95 for your two daughters... " 00:50:53.98\00:50:55.32 now, it's kind of sad to think about... at least in my mind, 00:50:55.35\00:50:57.99 I'm looking... I'm thinking... he... 00:50:58.02\00:51:00.19 Dad sold his daughters, 00:51:00.22\00:51:03.73 basically, it's like slaves. 00:51:03.76\00:51:05.83 Panel: Hmmm... 00:51:05.86\00:51:07.20 Isn't that right? 00:51:07.23\00:51:08.56 "Well, I'll take seven years labor for her 00:51:08.60\00:51:11.87 and I'll take... " okay, that's... 00:51:11.90\00:51:13.54 and so, yeah, and he said, "I've given all this time... " 00:51:13.57\00:51:18.41 He might have said once, "My best years. " 00:51:18.44\00:51:20.94 "I've given my best years, Dad, now look, 00:51:20.98\00:51:23.41 my land... what's wrong here?" 00:51:23.45\00:51:25.08 You don't seem happy about that, I just said, basic, "May I go? 00:51:25.11\00:51:29.05 I want to set up my own household, 00:51:29.08\00:51:30.59 and it's time for me to go back, I've been gone a long time 00:51:30.62\00:51:32.72 so, why... why can't I go? 00:51:32.75\00:51:34.79 But it seems clear you are not happy with me. " 00:51:34.82\00:51:38.73 Panel: Hmmm... okay. 00:51:38.76\00:51:40.10 Kenny: And why... 00:51:40.13\00:51:41.46 you say, "What? it only says in that verse, it talks about... 00:51:41.50\00:51:42.83 "You know why?" 00:51:42.86\00:51:44.20 and I think Jacob looked at him and said, 00:51:44.23\00:51:45.60 "You know why Dad? you know? 00:51:45.63\00:51:46.97 Because you changed my wages ten times. " 00:51:47.00\00:51:48.50 Panel: Right. 00:51:48.57\00:51:49.90 Kenny: Something was little bit shaky there right? 00:51:49.94\00:51:51.54 How can he do that and... Panel: That's true. 00:51:51.57\00:51:53.58 Kenny: Somebody comes up to you and changes your paycheck 00:51:53.61\00:51:56.11 by a 100 dollars a week, 00:51:56.14\00:51:57.48 you might have a little issue with him. 00:51:57.51\00:52:00.15 Something is not right, so, he said, "When I came here" 00:52:00.18\00:52:03.42 I want to put it this way, 00:52:03.45\00:52:04.85 "you didn't have two nickels to rub together... " 00:52:04.89\00:52:06.49 maybe he did... 00:52:06.55\00:52:07.89 "you didn't have very much when I came here, 00:52:07.92\00:52:10.49 God blessed you because of my work here, 00:52:10.53\00:52:13.23 God blessed you now... very much 00:52:13.26\00:52:16.33 and don't forget... " and he wanted to say 00:52:16.36\00:52:19.07 he was getting ready to leave because he's going to take some 00:52:19.10\00:52:20.64 cattle, right, with him. 00:52:20.67\00:52:22.20 He said, "Don't forget, I worked six years for those cattle, 00:52:22.24\00:52:24.11 you know, I'm going to take it. " 00:52:24.14\00:52:25.47 Jacob had been gone from home for a very long time. 00:52:25.51\00:52:29.11 Now, it was time to get back. 00:52:29.14\00:52:30.61 It was time for him to return. 00:52:30.65\00:52:32.08 Jacob waited for God to give him clear direction. 00:52:32.11\00:52:35.75 All right, during that time, I think it's been brought out, 00:52:35.78\00:52:38.99 Jacob learned a lot of patience. 00:52:39.02\00:52:40.89 He learned, you know, really true love for God 00:52:40.92\00:52:43.86 and he waited for permission to go 00:52:43.93\00:52:46.56 and I think that's always good in our life, 00:52:46.59\00:52:48.76 wait till God... right, if God brings you... 00:52:48.83\00:52:50.93 takes you from someplace and plants you over here. 00:52:50.97\00:52:53.64 Make sure the same God is taking you from here 00:52:53.67\00:52:56.04 and re-planting you somewhere else 00:52:56.07\00:52:57.67 rather than... I think we've all seen that 00:52:57.71\00:53:00.01 if we've been around for a while, 00:53:00.04\00:53:01.61 sometimes, people replant themselves. 00:53:01.64\00:53:03.18 Jacob learned patience and faith, right. 00:53:03.21\00:53:06.01 God finally directs Jacob to leave... Genesis 31:13, quickly, 00:53:06.05\00:53:09.02 now, He said, "Now arise from this land, 00:53:09.05\00:53:12.02 return to the land of thy kindred. " 00:53:12.05\00:53:14.09 Now, was it time? Absolutely. 00:53:14.12\00:53:17.03 Why? Because God said it was time. 00:53:17.06\00:53:19.26 That's number one but notice, 00:53:19.29\00:53:20.63 I'm going to give you three other quick reasons why 00:53:20.66\00:53:22.86 maybe that it was time for him to go 00:53:22.90\00:53:25.03 that weighed on Jacob's mind. 00:53:25.07\00:53:26.40 I don't think he was a coward by any means 00:53:26.43\00:53:28.10 but he... there's many times 00:53:28.17\00:53:29.50 notice he was afraid of something. 00:53:29.54\00:53:30.87 Something was going to happen. 00:53:30.91\00:53:32.24 Now, notice what Genesis 31:1 and 2, 00:53:32.27\00:53:34.81 "Jacob heard Laban's sons saying, 00:53:34.84\00:53:37.45 'Hey, this... this cat... 00:53:37.48\00:53:39.38 this guy has... this guy has come in 00:53:39.41\00:53:41.68 right, and he's taken things that's probably going to be ours 00:53:41.72\00:53:44.65 when Dad's gone. '" Panel: Right. 00:53:44.69\00:53:46.09 Kenny: And he heard it was such talk... 00:53:46.12\00:53:47.96 I think he feared for his life that something might happen 00:53:47.99\00:53:50.46 if he didn't leave 00:53:50.49\00:53:51.93 and then, all of a sudden... what? 00:53:51.99\00:53:53.33 Laban all of a sudden began to look at Jacob... what? 00:53:53.36\00:53:56.33 a little different... a little bit different eyes. 00:53:56.36\00:53:59.63 In other words, it wasn't the same 00:53:59.70\00:54:01.04 is what the Bible talks about here. 00:54:01.07\00:54:02.40 He was... he was not the same toward him as before. 00:54:02.44\00:54:05.67 so, he acted, right, little differently. 00:54:05.71\00:54:07.84 Quickly four things... notice that took place. 00:54:07.88\00:54:10.08 So he knew when it was time to leave. 00:54:10.11\00:54:12.25 Jacob knew it was time to leave, 00:54:12.28\00:54:13.82 we've mentioned, because God told him. 00:54:13.85\00:54:15.98 I think that's a real good... simple... 00:54:16.02\00:54:18.09 God told him to, right? 00:54:18.12\00:54:19.72 But in case he missed that, 00:54:19.75\00:54:21.26 God's told me some things sometimes... 00:54:21.29\00:54:22.92 at least I...
