" 00:02:08.16\00:02:11.16 Shelley: Amen, I kind of rushed through the introductions 00:02:11.19\00:02:14.16 because I'm anxious to do a little re-cap 00:02:14.20\00:02:17.50 as we begin to study Lesson 7: The Covenant with Abraham. 00:02:17.53\00:02:22.70 Why does the Abrahamic Covenant 00:02:22.74\00:02:26.51 have meaning to us as New Testament Christians? 00:02:26.54\00:02:29.84 Let me read to you from Luke 1:72 and 73. 00:02:29.88\00:02:33.11 This is Zacharias and he's prophesying 00:02:33.15\00:02:36.28 when he finds out that Mary is pregnant with the... 00:02:36.32\00:02:39.72 with the Messiah and he says these words, 00:02:39.75\00:02:43.26 "God is performing the mercy He promised to the patriarchs, 00:02:43.29\00:02:48.00 remembering his holy covenant; 00:02:48.03\00:02:52.00 which He swore to our father Abraham. " 00:02:52.03\00:02:54.80 You see, from Genesis to Revelation, 00:02:54.84\00:02:57.57 it is all the unfolding of God's everlasting covenant of grace, 00:02:57.61\00:03:02.94 the Lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world. 00:03:02.98\00:03:06.92 Now, James, in the New Testament also refers to Abraham 00:03:06.95\00:03:10.85 and he tells us what this everlasting covenant is, 00:03:10.89\00:03:14.42 he's actually repeating from 2nd Chronicles and Isaiah 00:03:14.46\00:03:17.96 but he says in James 2:23, "Abraham believed God 00:03:17.99\00:03:22.03 and it was accounted to him for righteousness 00:03:22.06\00:03:26.03 and he was called the Friend of God. " 00:03:26.07\00:03:30.81 Are you a friend of God? 00:03:30.84\00:03:32.84 Abraham... the Abrahamic Covenant 00:03:32.87\00:03:37.31 is righteousness by faith and you know what? 00:03:37.35\00:03:40.22 That's the only kind of righteousness there is, right? 00:03:40.25\00:03:42.88 Panel: Right... hmmm... 00:03:42.92\00:03:44.25 Shelley: So, we... we look at Abraham... 00:03:44.29\00:03:48.59 he exercised his faith in God to obey God. 00:03:48.62\00:03:53.13 He demonstrated the reality of his righteousness 00:03:53.16\00:03:57.53 his right relationship with God by walking in obedience. 00:03:57.57\00:04:02.37 He was called out by God at the age of 75 00:04:02.40\00:04:06.98 and for 100 years he lived and he died in obedience to God 00:04:07.01\00:04:15.25 so, he walked with God for 100 years 00:04:15.28\00:04:18.75 and, you know what? 00:04:18.82\00:04:20.42 Romans... we won't turn there but 00:04:20.46\00:04:22.72 Romans chapter 4 verse 11 calls Abraham the "Spiritual Father" 00:04:22.76\00:04:29.36 of all who walk in his steps of faith. 00:04:29.40\00:04:32.67 How exciting! 00:04:32.70\00:04:34.40 Now, let me give you a quick review 00:04:34.44\00:04:36.00 so, as we come into Sundays lesson, I want to build on this 00:04:36.04\00:04:39.74 because it's interesting how God unfolds his revelation 00:04:39.77\00:04:45.51 in a progressive fashion. 00:04:45.55\00:04:47.52 You know, God just didn't come and blurp, "Here it is. " 00:04:47.55\00:04:51.92 He has... because we couldn't have understood it. 00:04:51.95\00:04:55.59 So, in Genesis 12, Abraham is 75 years old... 00:04:55.62\00:04:59.23 he's childless... 00:04:59.26\00:05:00.60 when God calls him out of the Ur of Chaldees... 00:05:00.63\00:05:03.53 and you know what's interesting? He just follows God. 00:05:03.57\00:05:09.20 He has no idea where he's going, 00:05:09.24\00:05:11.71 but God introduced in Genesis 12, 00:05:11.74\00:05:14.28 His everlasting covenant with Abraham 00:05:14.34\00:05:16.81 which would include the Seed... the Messiah... 00:05:16.85\00:05:19.68 it would be... include land a nation... 00:05:19.71\00:05:23.02 divine blessings and protection. 00:05:23.05\00:05:25.05 So, in obedient faith... Abraham believed God. 00:05:25.09\00:05:30.03 He walked away from all of the comforts of the big city. 00:05:30.09\00:05:33.90 He exchanged his life of leisure 00:05:33.96\00:05:37.83 to become a nomad... I mean, he was an immigrant... 00:05:37.87\00:05:42.40 he was a sojourner who had to live in tents 00:05:42.44\00:05:45.74 instead of the comfort that he was used to 00:05:45.77\00:05:48.81 but he always obeyed the commandments of God. 00:05:48.84\00:05:51.85 We see in Hebrews 11:10, 00:05:51.88\00:05:54.88 it says that Abraham was waiting... 00:05:54.92\00:05:58.65 I've always said, "Looking for the city" 00:05:58.69\00:06:02.12 but it says, "he was waiting for the city 00:06:02.16\00:06:05.59 whose Builder and Maker was God. " 00:06:05.63\00:06:07.93 You know what? 00:06:07.96\00:06:09.36 Abraham is a great example to us 00:06:09.40\00:06:11.97 because obedience... 00:06:12.00\00:06:13.97 Abraham's obedience was his pathway to blessing 00:06:14.00\00:06:18.14 and it's the same for us today. 00:06:18.17\00:06:20.18 Obedience is the highest expression of worship 00:06:20.21\00:06:23.65 for the Lord... and it is the pathway to God's blessing. 00:06:23.68\00:06:26.88 So, he comes out of the land of Canaan 00:06:26.92\00:06:29.25 when he is a... a... with his wife who's ten years younger, 00:06:29.28\00:06:33.56 Sarai... whose later name was Sarah... 00:06:33.59\00:06:35.96 he comes out with Lot and then he pitched his tent... 00:06:35.99\00:06:40.16 he's got this household of people with him 00:06:40.20\00:06:42.60 but as soon as he pitched his tent, 00:06:42.66\00:06:44.70 he built an altar because he was devoted to worship of God 00:06:44.73\00:06:50.81 and he called on the name of the Lord 00:06:50.84\00:06:53.01 and after a while... then in Genesis 12, 00:06:53.04\00:06:55.11 he goes down to Egypt during the famine. 00:06:55.14\00:06:57.18 But now, Genesis 13... 00:06:57.21\00:06:59.18 twelve: God introduces the covenant, 00:06:59.21\00:07:02.72 Genesis 13... he comes up from Egypt... 00:07:02.75\00:07:05.62 he's... Abraham and Lot... they're... 00:07:05.65\00:07:07.99 oh, they've been blessed by the Lord... 00:07:08.02\00:07:10.33 their herds are so big 00:07:10.36\00:07:11.69 that their herdsmen are beginning to argue 00:07:11.73\00:07:13.66 who wants what... 00:07:13.70\00:07:15.03 Abraham says, "We've got to separate... 00:07:15.06\00:07:17.30 land can't support us together... 00:07:17.33\00:07:19.33 and in total humility he gives his younger nephew, Lot 00:07:19.37\00:07:24.21 the choice... which way to go. 00:07:24.24\00:07:27.38 But in Genesis 13:14 through 16, 00:07:27.41\00:07:30.45 God reaffirms... He's introduced the covenant... 00:07:30.48\00:07:34.65 now He's going to reaffirm the covenant with Abraham 00:07:34.68\00:07:39.02 promising the land and he says in Genesis 13:16, 00:07:39.05\00:07:43.36 get this... 00:07:43.39\00:07:44.73 "I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; 00:07:44.76\00:07:48.56 so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, 00:07:48.60\00:07:52.47 then your descendants could be numbered. " 00:07:52.50\00:07:56.04 The name Abraham literally means: Exalted Father 00:07:56.07\00:07:59.57 and it's interesting... he's got no descendants yet has he? 00:07:59.61\00:08:02.88 Panel: Laughing... sure... 00:08:02.91\00:08:04.25 Shelley: But Genesis 14 God gives Abraham 00:08:04.28\00:08:07.22 the victory over the five kings, 00:08:07.25\00:08:09.78 he has a "meet and greet" with the High Priest Melchizedek 00:08:09.82\00:08:13.15 but now, it takes us to Sunday, 00:08:13.19\00:08:16.36 Genesis 15: The Faith of Abraham. 00:08:16.39\00:08:19.16 Let's look at Genesis 15:1 through 4, 00:08:19.19\00:08:21.93 this is one of my favorite chapters in the whole Bible, 00:08:21.96\00:08:24.67 Genesis 15, "After these things 00:08:24.70\00:08:27.94 the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, 00:08:27.97\00:08:30.94 'Do not be afraid, Abram. 00:08:30.97\00:08:33.54 I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward. ' 00:08:33.58\00:08:37.15 But Abram, said, 'Lord God, what will You give me 00:08:37.18\00:08:42.85 seeing I go childless, 00:08:42.88\00:08:44.22 and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?'" 00:08:44.25\00:08:49.02 This was his male servant. 00:08:49.06\00:08:50.69 "Then Abram said, 'Look, you've given me no offspring; 00:08:50.73\00:08:54.73 indeed one born in my house is my heir!' 00:08:54.76\00:09:00.40 And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, 00:09:00.44\00:09:03.14 'This one shall not be your heir, 00:09:03.17\00:09:06.04 but one who will come from your own body 00:09:06.07\00:09:11.15 shall be your heir. " 00:09:11.18\00:09:13.21 Now, notice this because sometimes we forget this. 00:09:13.25\00:09:15.85 God didn't tell him... 00:09:15.88\00:09:17.69 it would come from Sarah's body right away, 00:09:17.72\00:09:20.06 He said... from Abraham's body. 00:09:20.09\00:09:22.62 So, I think that explains what happens a little later on 00:09:22.66\00:09:26.46 but... so, He's talking about the Seed... 00:09:26.49\00:09:30.70 the Seed with a capital "S" which is Jesus Christ. 00:09:30.77\00:09:34.97 And in the plural 00:09:35.00\00:09:38.11 the Seed was Abraham's posterity on the earth, 00:09:38.14\00:09:42.28 so, Genesis 15:5 says, "Then He... " God 00:09:42.31\00:09:46.05 "brought Abraham outside and said, 00:09:46.08\00:09:48.32 'Now look toward the heaven, 00:09:48.35\00:09:50.19 and count the stars if you are able to number them. ' 00:09:50.22\00:09:53.76 And He said to him, 00:09:53.82\00:09:55.69 'So shall your descendants be. '" 00:09:55.72\00:09:59.09 Interesting... Genesis 13, 00:09:59.13\00:10:01.53 He is calling them the dust of the earth... 00:10:01.56\00:10:04.67 now, he's... it's a repeat and enlarge 00:10:04.70\00:10:07.17 and He's saying, "Look at the stars, 00:10:07.20\00:10:09.64 this is how your descendants will be. " 00:10:09.70\00:10:11.54 You know, I had this thought... 00:10:11.57\00:10:13.07 I don't know if it's true or not, 00:10:13.11\00:10:14.54 but dust of the earth could have been his fleshly heirs 00:10:14.58\00:10:19.25 and the stars... the spiritual Israel... 00:10:19.28\00:10:22.22 I don't know but anyway, it was an interesting thought. 00:10:22.25\00:10:24.95 Galatians 3:7 says, "Those who walk in faith, 00:10:24.99\00:10:30.46 are the true children of Abraham. " 00:10:30.49\00:10:35.00 So, we get in Genesis 17, 00:10:35.03\00:10:37.63 and God changes Abram's name to Abraham. 00:10:37.67\00:10:41.84 which means: The father of many nations 00:10:41.90\00:10:45.94 and at this point, God is showing His covenant 00:10:45.97\00:10:50.21 of righteousness by faith 00:10:50.25\00:10:51.71 is not just for this nation of physical descendants 00:10:51.75\00:10:56.72 but that Abraham would be the father of many nations... 00:10:56.75\00:11:01.69 God's covenant is universal. 00:11:01.72\00:11:05.13 But now, we're really getting into the progressive unfolding 00:11:05.16\00:11:09.96 of God's covenant. 00:11:10.03\00:11:12.03 In Genesis 15:6, it says this, 00:11:12.07\00:11:15.37 "Abraham believed in the LORD, 00:11:15.40\00:11:18.61 and He... God... accounted it to him for righteousness. " 00:11:18.64\00:11:24.68 You know, to believe God means that we accept in obedience 00:11:24.71\00:11:30.72 His plan... if you believe God, you accept His plan 00:11:30.75\00:11:36.19 and walk-in obedience, so, righteousness by faith 00:11:36.22\00:11:41.60 includes obedience by grace through faith. 00:11:41.66\00:11:46.67 And from the time that God introduced the covenant, 00:11:46.70\00:11:51.57 in to... when He called him out, Abraham was 75... 00:11:51.61\00:11:56.44 did you know it was 25 years 00:11:56.48\00:11:58.91 for the covenant son of promise to come... Isaac. 00:11:58.95\00:12:03.62 Isn't that amazing? 00:12:03.65\00:12:05.09 He walks so faithfully for those 25 years 00:12:05.12\00:12:08.36 but what I love about Genesis 15 is... God is now... 00:12:08.39\00:12:12.03 He's introduced the covenant... 00:12:12.06\00:12:13.86 in 13 and 14 He reaffirms the covenant 00:12:13.90\00:12:17.30 but this chapter... God is going to ratify 00:12:17.33\00:12:20.64 the covenant of salvation by grace through faith... 00:12:20.70\00:12:24.31 righteousness by faith. 00:12:24.34\00:12:25.77 Abraham slaughters the clean animals... 00:12:25.81\00:12:29.41 a heifer and female goat 00:12:29.44\00:12:31.61 and a ram and he splits them... 00:12:31.65\00:12:33.72 then he's got the turtledove and the pigeon 00:12:33.75\00:12:36.42 and the animals... other than the birds 00:12:36.45\00:12:39.12 were cut right in twain... 00:12:39.15\00:12:42.29 they were just right down the middle 00:12:42.32\00:12:44.73 and listen to what Genesis 15:12 says, 00:12:44.79\00:12:47.16 "When the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram" 00:12:47.20\00:12:51.47 God put him in a deep sleep... 00:12:51.50\00:12:53.40 "and behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him... " 00:12:53.44\00:12:57.14 And in verse 17 it says, "And it came to pass, 00:12:57.17\00:12:59.94 when the sun went down and it was dark, 00:12:59.97\00:13:02.64 that behold, there appeared a smoking oven 00:13:02.68\00:13:05.18 and a burning torch that passed between those pieces. God accounted it to him as righteousness. 00:14:15.72\00:14:20.19 Panel: Amen... amen... amen, praise the Lord. 00:14:20.22\00:14:22.79 Dinzey: Well, we now move to Monday's portion of the lesson. 00:14:22.82\00:14:26.39 My name is John Dinzey and the title for Monday's lesson 00:14:26.43\00:14:29.96 is Abram's Doubts... 00:14:30.00\00:14:31.60 Abraham's Doubts... 00:14:31.63\00:14:33.13 We now move to Genesis chapter 16 00:14:33.17\00:14:35.67 and beginning in verse 1, 00:14:35.70\00:14:37.61 let's take a look at it, 00:14:37.64\00:14:39.47 "Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. 00:14:39.51\00:14:44.51 And she had an Egyptian maidservant 00:14:44.55\00:14:47.28 whose name was Hagar. " 00:14:47.32\00:14:49.08 I want to pause here because the Lord changed Abraham's name... 00:14:49.12\00:14:55.96 Abram's name to Abraham and as you have already heard 00:14:55.99\00:14:59.26 he is father of many nations which is interesting 00:14:59.29\00:15:03.33 because many years passed after God made the promise 00:15:03.37\00:15:07.34 that he would children 00:15:07.37\00:15:09.14 and time passes... people begin to doubt... 00:15:09.17\00:15:12.57 "Is God going to do this or not?" 00:15:12.61\00:15:14.01 And I can see Abraham... "What is your name?" 00:15:14.04\00:15:17.35 So and so... "And your name?" 00:15:17.38\00:15:18.91 "Abraham... which means father of many nations... " 00:15:18.95\00:15:21.58 "Oh, how many children do you have?" 00:15:21.62\00:15:23.49 "Ah... none... " 00:15:23.55\00:15:25.45 Panel: Laughter. 00:15:25.49\00:15:27.36 Dinzey: It began to be a... a... a very difficult situation 00:15:27.39\00:15:30.36 and I'm sure it played on Abraham's mind. 00:15:30.39\00:15:32.96 So, when we get to Genesis chapter 16 00:15:32.99\00:15:35.50 and we see here that something is presented to us... 00:15:35.56\00:15:40.30 verse 2 it says, "So Sarai said to Abram, 00:15:40.34\00:15:44.11 'See now, the LORD has restrained me 00:15:44.14\00:15:48.04 from bearing children. 00:15:48.08\00:15:50.15 Please, go in to my maid; 00:15:50.18\00:15:52.58 perhaps I shall obtain children by her. ' 00:15:52.61\00:15:56.12 And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai. " 00:15:56.15\00:16:00.72 So, we see here that neither one of them 00:16:00.76\00:16:05.26 tried to encourage one another at this point. 00:16:05.29\00:16:08.60 I'm sure they prayed many... many times... many years, 00:16:08.63\00:16:12.23 "Lord, is it now? Please bring this promise" 00:16:12.27\00:16:15.60 Abraham was advancing in age... 00:16:15.64\00:16:18.01 he is concerned... 00:16:18.04\00:16:19.57 who is going to inherit the things that I have? 00:16:19.64\00:16:22.61 And so... in this... let's call it desperation... 00:16:22.64\00:16:25.55 they resorted to what Sarai suggested 00:16:25.61\00:16:29.82 which was really a common practice of the day. 00:16:29.85\00:16:33.02 The neighbors around wouldn't say, 00:16:33.05\00:16:35.52 "Ah... look what Abraham did!" 00:16:35.56\00:16:37.96 No... it was a common practice of the day. 00:16:37.99\00:16:40.70 So, this was a serious problem because you see, 00:16:40.73\00:16:45.50 when God promises something, 00:16:45.53\00:16:46.87 we can see throughout the Bible that He fulfills His promise. 00:16:46.90\00:16:50.71 Panel: That's right... yeah... that's right. 00:16:50.74\00:16:52.07 Dinzey: And if we try to do God's job, 00:16:52.11\00:16:55.84 we get into serious trouble. 00:16:55.88\00:16:58.71 Panel: That's right. 00:16:58.75\00:17:00.08 Dinzey: This was a great, great mistake 00:17:00.12\00:17:02.52 which... even to this day you can see 00:17:02.55\00:17:05.15 there are issues between Abraham's children. 00:17:05.19\00:17:09.66 So, notice here that the word "Please" was used 00:17:09.69\00:17:13.50 and you have in the... in the King James Version, 00:17:13.53\00:17:17.33 "I pray thee... " you know... 00:17:17.37\00:17:18.90 it's... it's a... it's an expression of a request... 00:17:18.93\00:17:22.57 such as in a pleading 00:17:22.60\00:17:23.94 and Abraham consented, you know, 00:17:23.97\00:17:26.64 he thought, "Well, if Sarah appears... 00:17:26.68\00:17:28.88 the time for her to have children is gone... 00:17:28.91\00:17:30.98 this must be the best solution. 00:17:31.01\00:17:33.82 Maybe this is the way God is going to work 00:17:33.85\00:17:36.89 to fulfill His promise... " 00:17:36.92\00:17:38.85 and, you know, we as human beings sometimes... 00:17:38.89\00:17:43.32 we try to reason things that we know are wrong 00:17:43.36\00:17:47.76 and we say, "Well, maybe this is acceptable to the Lord. " 00:17:47.80\00:17:51.60 And so, they went ahead and did this thing. 00:17:51.63\00:17:55.40 Let's go now to verse 3, Genesis 16:3... 00:17:55.44\00:17:59.17 "Then Sarai, Abram's wife, 00:17:59.21\00:18:00.98 took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, 00:18:01.01\00:18:03.14 and gave her to her husband Abram... " 00:18:03.18\00:18:06.61 notice it says, "to be his wife, 00:18:06.65\00:18:09.22 after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan. " 00:18:09.25\00:18:13.82 Many years had passed and it says, 00:18:13.86\00:18:15.86 "So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. 00:18:15.89\00:18:18.43 And when she saw that she had conceived, 00:18:18.46\00:18:22.46 her mistress... " that is Sarai... 00:18:22.50\00:18:24.97 "became despised in her eyes. " 00:18:25.00\00:18:27.17 So, we see here that a situation begins to boil 00:18:27.20\00:18:31.51 in which... now, Hagar is looking at Sarah, 00:18:31.57\00:18:35.81 "Ah, I have children and you don't... I... I... " 00:18:35.84\00:18:38.88 her... her... in her mind, her position began to be higher 00:18:38.91\00:18:43.15 "I am the wife of the man that has all of this... 00:18:43.18\00:18:47.16 I am the one that is bringing him children... " 00:18:47.22\00:18:51.13 and she heard... she knew about the promise of the Lord, 00:18:51.19\00:18:53.96 and so, she begins to look at Sarai 00:18:54.00\00:18:57.60 as beneath her 00:18:57.63\00:18:59.77 and it says though... the Bible is a strong language, 00:18:59.80\00:19:02.10 "despised in her eyes. " 00:19:02.14\00:19:04.31 So, immediate action had to be taken. 00:19:04.34\00:19:08.84 A situation was created that brought problems to the family, 00:19:08.88\00:19:16.95 a great challenge. 00:19:16.99\00:19:18.32 You know, today, you know, we look at this situation 00:19:18.35\00:19:22.19 and we go... "Tsk... wow, how could... 00:19:22.22\00:19:24.79 how could Abraham and Sarah do that?" 00:19:24.86\00:19:27.46 There's a practice today that people use 00:19:27.50\00:19:29.70 when couples have trouble having children, 00:19:29.73\00:19:31.90 they call it "Artificial" what? 00:19:31.93\00:19:34.97 Panel: Insemination. 00:19:35.00\00:19:36.34 Dinzey: So, this is still practiced today... 00:19:36.37\00:19:38.41 it is not as... huh... or surrogate mothers, yes. 00:19:38.44\00:19:41.94 So, we see that today, there's something similar. 00:19:42.01\00:19:45.48 Back in those days, they didn't have... 00:19:45.51\00:19:48.22 or they didn't use the type of system we have today. 00:19:48.25\00:19:51.89 Let's go to Genesis 16 verse 5, 00:19:51.92\00:19:54.56 "Then Sarai said to Abram, 00:19:54.59\00:19:55.92 'My wrong be upon you!'" 00:19:55.96\00:19:57.76 Now, there's a blame going back and forth. 00:19:57.79\00:19:59.56 "I gave my maid into your embrace; 00:19:59.59\00:20:02.33 and when she saw that she had conceived, 00:20:02.36\00:20:05.07 I became despised in her eyes. 00:20:05.10\00:20:06.80 The Lord judge between you and me. 00:20:06.84\00:20:10.81 So Abram said to Sarai, 00:20:10.84\00:20:12.71 'Indeed your maid is in your hand; 00:20:12.74\00:20:16.21 do to her as you please. ' 00:20:16.24\00:20:18.48 And when Sarai dealt harshly with her, 00:20:18.51\00:20:21.15 she fled from her presence. " 00:20:21.18\00:20:23.69 You see, although Hagar had become Abraham's wife, 00:20:23.72\00:20:27.22 she was still considered in position to be Sarai's handmaid 00:20:27.26\00:20:32.59 and it was a difficult situation for Abraham that he's now facing 00:20:32.63\00:20:36.63 you know, he's got this hope in this child being born 00:20:36.67\00:20:39.67 and now the... the two wives are having issues, 00:20:39.73\00:20:43.41 very difficult situation... what do you do? 00:20:43.44\00:20:47.11 Well, Sarai is the love of his life. 00:20:47.14\00:20:50.28 "Do with her as you please. " 00:20:50.31\00:20:53.25 And this is one of those difficult times 00:20:53.28\00:20:56.25 and this is what happened, of course, 00:20:56.28\00:20:59.15 Hagar flees and now let's go quickly into verse 7 00:20:59.19\00:21:06.13 of Genesis chapter 16, 00:21:06.19\00:21:08.60 "Now the Angel of the Lord found her by the spring of water 00:21:08.66\00:21:12.20 in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur. " 00:21:12.23\00:21:14.97 I'm sure everybody knows where that is... 00:21:15.00\00:21:16.37 it's mentioned in the lessons. 00:21:16.40\00:21:18.31 Now, the lesson brings out something interesting 00:21:18.34\00:21:21.61 and I like to read it to you. 00:21:21.64\00:21:23.51 it says, "The reference to the angel of the Lord... " 00:21:23.55\00:21:26.31 Genesis 16:7 00:21:26.35\00:21:27.72 it's a title that is often identified with the Lord 00:21:27.75\00:21:32.29 Jehovah... see Genesis chapter 18 verse 1, 00:21:32.32\00:21:36.66 and verse 13 and 22, 00:21:36.69\00:21:39.16 so, when you see "the Angel of the Lord" 00:21:39.19\00:21:40.80 it is a reference... we would like to tell you 00:21:40.83\00:21:44.50 of Christ Himself. 00:21:44.53\00:21:46.10 Genesis 16 verse 8, "And He said, 'Hagar... '" 00:21:46.13\00:21:48.67 notice what He says, 00:21:48.70\00:21:50.04 "And He said, 'Hagar, Sarai's maid, 00:21:50.07\00:21:54.08 where have you come from... where are you going?' 00:21:54.11\00:21:58.25 She said, 'I am fleeing from the presence 00:21:58.28\00:22:00.22 of my mistress Sarai. ' 00:22:00.28\00:22:01.65 The Angel of the Lord said to her, 00:22:01.68\00:22:03.79 'Return to your mistress, 00:22:03.82\00:22:06.05 and submit yourself under her hand. '" 00:22:06.09\00:22:09.96 The angel of the Lord was telling her, 00:22:09.99\00:22:13.80 "Recognize your position... return and submit. " 00:22:13.83\00:22:18.63 In other words, "Change your attitude... 00:22:18.67\00:22:21.90 change your attitude and things will go better for you. " 00:22:21.94\00:22:24.91 And so, this is the Angel of the Lord 00:22:24.94\00:22:28.54 but the Angel of the Lord now gives her a wonderful promise. 00:22:28.58\00:22:32.11 Notice verse 10, 00:22:32.15\00:22:33.48 "Then the Angel of the Lord said to her, 00:22:33.52\00:22:34.85 'I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, 00:22:34.88\00:22:38.75 so that they shall not be counted for multitude. ' 00:22:38.79\00:22:42.76 And the Angel of the Lord said to her: 00:22:42.79\00:22:44.69 "Behold, you are with child, and you shall bear a son. 00:22:44.73\00:22:48.76 You shall call his name Ishmael, 00:22:48.80\00:22:51.07 because the Lord has heard your affliction. " 00:22:51.10\00:22:54.14 Panel: Hmmm... 00:22:54.20\00:22:55.54 Dinzey: And this is a wonderful declaration 00:22:55.57\00:22:58.57 because Hagar now hears, "I'm going to have a son 00:22:58.61\00:23:03.51 and through him 00:23:03.55\00:23:05.15 Abraham can continue to have descendants... " 00:23:05.18\00:23:08.85 and this... this was encouraging to her. 00:23:08.88\00:23:10.85 Now, notice verse 12, 00:23:10.89\00:23:12.65 "He shall be a wild man; 00:23:12.69\00:23:14.36 His hand shall be against every man, 00:23:14.39\00:23:15.99 and every man's hand against him. 00:23:16.02\00:23:17.53 And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren" 00:23:17.56\00:23:20.20 and this is happening today. 00:23:20.23\00:23:22.30 You can go to Israel and you can see the sons of Ishmael 00:23:22.33\00:23:25.60 dwelling in the presence of his brethren. 00:23:25.63\00:23:27.90 "Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, 00:23:27.97\00:23:30.27 You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; 00:23:30.31\00:23:32.47 for she said, 'Have I also here seen Him who sees me?' 00:23:32.51\00:23:36.44 Therefore the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; 00:23:36.48\00:23:40.35 observe, it is between Kadesh and Bered. 00:23:40.38\00:23:44.19 So Hagar bore Abram a son; 00:23:44.22\00:23:46.19 and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 00:23:46.22\00:23:49.46 Abram was eighty-six years old 00:23:49.49\00:23:52.63 when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram. " 00:23:52.66\00:23:54.43 Now, all of this is something that helps us understand that 00:23:54.46\00:23:58.13 this is... when you go to Galatians chapter 4, 00:23:58.20\00:24:01.70 you will see that this is an allegory and its... 00:24:01.74\00:24:05.17 I like to read this quickly to you, 00:24:05.24\00:24:06.57 Galatians 4:23-26, 00:24:06.61\00:24:09.41 "But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; 00:24:09.44\00:24:12.98 but he of the freewoman was by promise. 00:24:13.01\00:24:15.58 Which things are an allegory: 00:24:15.62\00:24:17.12 for these are the two covenants; 00:24:17.15\00:24:18.49 the one from mount Sinai, 00:24:18.52\00:24:20.52 which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. 00:24:20.56\00:24:22.69 For this is Agar in mount Sinai in Arabia, 00:24:22.72\00:24:25.26 and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, 00:24:25.29\00:24:27.33 and is in bondage with her children. 00:24:27.36\00:24:29.63 But Jerusalem which is above is free, 00:24:29.66\00:24:32.23 which is the mother of us all. " 00:24:32.27\00:24:33.97 Well, my time is up. 00:24:34.00\00:24:35.34 Shelley: Amen, thank you, that was wonderful. 00:24:35.37\00:24:37.67 We're going to take a quick break and be right back, 00:24:37.71\00:24:40.14 don't... don't go away. 00:24:40.18\00:24:41.58 Music... 00:24:41.61\00:24:46.51 Ever wish you could watch a 3ABN Sabbath School Panel again 00:24:46.55\00:24:50.12 or share it on Facebook... 00:24:50.15\00:24:52.15 Instagram or Twitter? 00:24:52.19\00:24:53.56 Well, you can by visiting 3abnsabbathschoolpanel. com 00:24:53.59\00:24:58.26 A clean design makes it easy 00:24:58.29\00:25:00.80 to find the Program you are looking for. 00:25:00.83\00:25:02.83 There are also links to the Adult Bible Study Guide 00:25:02.86\00:25:06.30 so you can follow along. 00:25:06.33\00:25:07.94 Sharing is easy... 00:25:07.97\00:25:09.64 just click "Share" and choose your favorite Social Media. 00:25:09.67\00:25:12.91 Share a Link... Shelley already mentioned. 00:25:28.56\00:25:32.73 I'm Jill Morikone and my lesson on Tuesday 00:25:32.76\00:25:35.30 is: The Sign of the Abrahamic Covenant 00:25:35.33\00:25:38.00 which, of course, we know to be circumcision 00:25:38.03\00:25:39.70 and we will get to that. 00:25:39.73\00:25:41.07 Pastor Johnny just ended with the end of chapter 16 00:25:41.10\00:25:44.17 and what does it say? Abraham was 86 years old. 00:25:44.21\00:25:47.24 We pick up chapter 17 when Abraham was... what's that? 00:25:47.28\00:25:52.65 99 years old. 00:25:52.68\00:25:54.42 Panel: Wow! 00:25:54.45\00:25:56.08 Jill: So, 13 years have passed between Genesis chapter 16 00:25:56.12\00:25:59.15 and the start of Genesis chapter 17. 00:25:59.19\00:26:01.99 Ishmael is now 13 years old. 00:26:02.02\00:26:05.03 The child was conceived out of "works" 00:26:05.06\00:26:07.36 as you brought out Pastor Johnny... 00:26:07.40\00:26:09.63 the child conceived out of lack of faith... 00:26:09.66\00:26:11.50 out of presumption... 00:26:11.53\00:26:13.47 out of trying to play God. 00:26:13.50\00:26:15.24 Have you ever played God? 00:26:15.27\00:26:16.94 Trying to get God to answer your prayers. 00:26:16.97\00:26:20.74 We see the discord and strife that existed in that household 00:26:20.78\00:26:26.41 and it's also interesting... 00:26:26.48\00:26:27.82 I don't want to make too much of this 00:26:27.85\00:26:29.18 but we see in Genesis 15 and Shelley had talked about... 00:26:29.22\00:26:32.55 this God appearing to Abraham and the covenant being given 00:26:32.59\00:26:36.16 and made with the separation of the animals 00:26:36.19\00:26:38.86 and then in Genesis chapter 16, God never speaks to Abraham 00:26:38.89\00:26:43.06 and Abraham never speaks to God. 00:26:43.13\00:26:45.30 In fact, God comes and speaks to Hagar 00:26:45.33\00:26:49.70 but we see almost this kind of separation going on 00:26:49.74\00:26:52.67 and then we come to Genesis 17 00:26:52.71\00:26:55.64 and the covenant is reiterated. 00:26:55.68\00:26:58.55 The covenant is renewed, Genesis 17 verse 1, 00:26:58.58\00:27:02.15 "When Abram was ninety-nine years old, 00:27:02.18\00:27:04.22 the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, 00:27:04.25\00:27:07.36 'I am Almighty God... '" 00:27:07.39\00:27:09.82 I am El Shaddai. 00:27:09.86\00:27:12.03 It's the first time that that reference to God 00:27:12.06\00:27:15.96 is used... that name of God is used in the Bible, 00:27:16.00\00:27:19.57 "I am El Shaddai... 00:27:19.60\00:27:21.07 I am the God for whom nothing is impossible... 00:27:21.10\00:27:24.67 walk before Me and be blameless. " 00:27:24.71\00:27:28.64 The second covenant-making story is again introduced 00:27:28.68\00:27:32.25 by a theophany 00:27:32.28\00:27:33.62 which is just an appearance with God. 00:27:33.65\00:27:35.75 So, it appeared as if God was little absent... 00:27:35.78\00:27:38.75 of course, He was not absent 00:27:38.79\00:27:40.12 but it... it appeared He was absent from Abram 00:27:40.16\00:27:43.16 there in Genesis 16 but God shows up again to Abraham 00:27:43.19\00:27:46.90 in Genesis chapter 17. 00:27:46.93\00:27:48.63 You know the first takeaway I get from that... Almighty God. 00:27:48.66\00:27:52.13 El Shaddai condescends to the weakness of humanity. 00:27:52.17\00:27:56.81 He knows our frame... 00:27:56.84\00:27:59.01 He knows we are but dust. 00:27:59.07\00:28:01.21 Was Abraham perfect? 00:28:01.24\00:28:02.58 Absolutely not... he had taken some matters into his own hands. 00:28:02.61\00:28:06.28 He had sought to help God out 00:28:06.31\00:28:08.78 and yet, the Infinite stoops to the finite... 00:28:08.82\00:28:12.42 the Almighty God to frail humanity 00:28:12.45\00:28:15.62 spotless perfection to the mistakes of a man. 00:28:15.66\00:28:20.00 I love our God... He condescends to us. 00:28:20.03\00:28:23.93 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:28:23.97\00:28:25.30 Jill: Verse 2... Genesis 17 verse 2, 00:28:25.33\00:28:26.70 "I will make My covenant between Me and you, 00:28:26.74\00:28:29.90 and will multiply you exceedingly. " 00:28:29.94\00:28:32.94 Takeaway Number 2: Only God can do the impossible. 00:28:32.97\00:28:36.51 It seemed like it was impossible for Sarai... 00:28:36.54\00:28:38.81 it was past the time of bearing for women 00:28:38.85\00:28:41.08 so, she couldn't have kids... let's just be honest. 00:28:41.12\00:28:43.62 She was done... she couldn't have kids 00:28:43.65\00:28:46.62 and yet, only God can do the impossible 00:28:46.65\00:28:49.52 and God said, "I'm about ready Abram 00:28:49.56\00:28:52.36 to do the impossible for you and your wife. " 00:28:52.39\00:28:56.00 Jeremiah 32:27... I love that, 00:28:56.03\00:28:58.53 "Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. 00:28:58.57\00:29:00.60 Is there anything too hard for Me?" 00:29:00.64\00:29:03.47 Pause... 00:29:03.51\00:29:04.84 Are you going through an impossible situation? 00:29:04.87\00:29:07.61 Know that your God can do the impossible for you too. 00:29:07.64\00:29:11.21 Shelley: Amen. Jill: Takeaway Number 3: 00:29:11.28\00:29:13.25 The covenant is based on our faith 00:29:13.31\00:29:16.55 and God's faithfulness to work in us. 00:29:16.58\00:29:19.52 I love that... it's all about faith 00:29:19.55\00:29:22.39 and God's faithfulness to fulfill 00:29:22.42\00:29:25.13 His covenant promises in us. 00:29:25.16\00:29:27.00 Let's read the next verse, 00:29:27.03\00:29:28.86 verses 3 through 5, 00:29:28.90\00:29:30.23 "Then Abram fell on his face, 00:29:30.27\00:29:31.83 and God talked with him, saying: 00:29:31.87\00:29:33.57 'As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, 00:29:33.60\00:29:37.21 and you shall be a father of many nations. '" 00:29:37.24\00:29:40.21 Now, his name has changed. 00:29:40.24\00:29:42.24 "No longer shall your name be called Abram, 00:29:42.28\00:29:45.01 but your name shall be Abraham; 00:29:45.05\00:29:47.78 for I have made you a father of many nations. " 00:29:47.82\00:29:50.39 I love what Pastor Johnny said, 00:29:50.42\00:29:51.79 when people said, "What's your name?" 00:29:51.82\00:29:53.15 "My name's Abraham. " 00:29:53.19\00:29:54.52 "Oh really? how many children do you have?" 00:29:54.56\00:29:56.46 "Well... " at that point he had one who is Ishmael, right? 00:29:56.49\00:29:59.93 "Only one?" 00:29:59.96\00:30:01.30 Romans 4:17... this is in reference to this passage... 00:30:01.33\00:30:04.63 it says, "what God who calls those things that are not 00:30:04.67\00:30:08.07 as though they already were. " 00:30:08.10\00:30:10.74 Takeaway Number 4: 00:30:10.77\00:30:12.11 Faith accepts as reality 00:30:12.14\00:30:15.08 what our feelings or our finite minds cannot understand. 00:30:15.11\00:30:18.81 Panel: Hmmm... 00:30:18.85\00:30:20.48 Jill: I want to say that again, "Faith accepts as reality 00:30:20.52\00:30:23.28 what our feelings cannot understand. " 00:30:23.32\00:30:25.79 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:30:25.82\00:30:27.16 Jill: So, you might not feel forgiven, 00:30:27.19\00:30:28.52 but God says you're forgiven, that means, guess what? 00:30:28.56\00:30:30.89 you are forgiven. 00:30:30.93\00:30:32.33 You might not feel justified 00:30:32.36\00:30:34.50 but God says, "You are justified... " 00:30:34.53\00:30:36.63 God says, "You are a new creation in Christ Jesus. " 00:30:36.67\00:30:40.30 God says... "You are holy and blameless. " 00:30:40.34\00:30:44.01 Accept what God's Word says about you... 00:30:44.04\00:30:47.08 accept that by faith. 00:30:47.11\00:30:48.64 Verse 6, Genesis 17 verse 6, 00:30:48.68\00:30:51.45 "I will make you exceedingly fruitful; 00:30:51.48\00:30:53.05 and I will make nations of you, 00:30:53.08\00:30:54.98 and kings shall come from you. " 00:30:55.02\00:30:57.59 Takeaway Number 5: God's the one who brings fruitfulness. 00:30:57.62\00:31:01.59 God's the one who causes growth. 00:31:01.62\00:31:04.13 God's the one who gives power... 00:31:04.16\00:31:06.63 moving very quickly because we got to get to the sign. 00:31:06.66\00:31:09.56 Verse 7, "I will establish my covenant between Me and you 00:31:09.60\00:31:12.43 and your descendants after you 00:31:12.47\00:31:13.94 in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, 00:31:13.97\00:31:16.50 To be God to you and your descendants after you. " 00:31:16.54\00:31:19.11 Compare this with Genesis 3:15, 00:31:19.14\00:31:20.88 that promise of the seed... that covenant of redemption, 00:31:20.91\00:31:24.35 we see this here with the everlasting covenant of grace 00:31:24.38\00:31:27.82 that God made... this covenant of salvation. 00:31:27.85\00:31:30.89 Takeaway Number 6: 00:31:30.92\00:31:32.25 God's everlasting covenant of grace is for all people 00:31:32.29\00:31:35.22 for all time. 00:31:35.29\00:31:36.73 It's to bring his people into a saving relationship with Him. 00:31:36.76\00:31:41.13 Now, let's look at the sign that is... circumcision. 00:31:41.16\00:31:43.77 We're going to read verses 10 and 11 for that. 00:31:43.80\00:31:46.13 "This is My covenant which you shall keep, 00:31:46.17\00:31:48.40 between Me and you and your descendants after you: 00:31:48.44\00:31:50.81 Every male child among you shall be circumcised; 00:31:50.84\00:31:54.74 and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, 00:31:54.78\00:31:58.21 and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you. " 00:31:58.25\00:32:01.82 There were stipulations for this. 00:32:01.85\00:32:03.28 The male children would be circumcised on the eighth day. 00:32:03.35\00:32:06.82 Every male child was to be circumcised... those by birth 00:32:06.86\00:32:10.29 and those by purchase 00:32:10.33\00:32:12.53 and the uncircumcised would be considered cut off from the camp 00:32:12.56\00:32:17.73 or cut off from God's covenant. 00:32:17.77\00:32:20.37 Takeaway Number 1: 00:32:20.40\00:32:22.14 Circumcision is meaningless without righteousness by faith. 00:32:22.17\00:32:26.14 There's a whole discussion in the New Testament Church, 00:32:26.17\00:32:30.11 we don't really have time to get to it 00:32:30.15\00:32:32.51 but look at Romans 4... we'll look at one verse... 00:32:32.55\00:32:34.58 Romans 4 verse 11... there was this discussion: 00:32:34.62\00:32:37.42 Did Christians have to be circumcised 00:32:37.45\00:32:39.82 in order to be justified... in order to be saved? 00:32:39.85\00:32:42.96 Was circumcision necessary for salvation? 00:32:42.99\00:32:46.19 And we see in Romans 4 verse 11, 00:32:46.23\00:32:48.80 Paul says... "He... " that's Abraham... 00:32:48.83\00:32:51.23 "received the sign of circumcision, 00:32:51.27\00:32:53.34 a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had 00:32:53.37\00:32:56.94 while he was still uncircumcised, 00:32:56.97\00:32:59.94 that he might be the father of all those who believe, 00:32:59.97\00:33:03.88 though they are uncircumcised, 00:33:03.91\00:33:05.91 that righteousness might be imputed to them also. " 00:33:05.95\00:33:09.12 You see, Abraham was justified 00:33:09.15\00:33:10.92 as Shelley already read Genesis 15 verse 6, 00:33:10.95\00:33:14.49 Abraham believed God and it was accounted... 00:33:14.52\00:33:17.99 or imputed to him for righteousness 00:33:18.03\00:33:21.06 and that was clearly prior to circumcision 00:33:21.10\00:33:23.87 because we just see circumcision introduced here 00:33:23.90\00:33:26.23 in Genesis chapter 17, 00:33:26.30\00:33:28.70 so, Abraham was justified... made righteous before God 00:33:28.74\00:33:32.37 by believing God. 00:33:32.44\00:33:33.78 Takeaway Number 2: 00:33:33.81\00:33:35.14 Circumcision is an external sign of an internal work. 00:33:35.18\00:33:39.98 Deuteronomy 30 verse 6, 00:33:40.02\00:33:42.88 "The Lord your God will circumcise your heart 00:33:42.92\00:33:46.55 and the heart of your descendants, 00:33:46.59\00:33:49.86 to love the Lord your God with all your heart... 00:33:49.89\00:33:52.76 with all your soul, that you may live. " 00:33:52.79\00:33:54.83 So, circumcision was an external sign... yes... 00:33:54.86\00:33:57.37 but it was a sign of an internal change... 00:33:57.40\00:33:59.57 something that God was doing 00:33:59.60\00:34:01.60 in the hearts and minds of His covenant people. 00:34:01.64\00:34:05.84 The final Takeaway Number 3: 00:34:05.87\00:34:08.78 Circumcision represents that we cannot do anything 00:34:08.81\00:34:13.01 by our own flesh. 00:34:13.05\00:34:15.18 I want to read a quote here from Kent Hughes, 00:34:15.22\00:34:17.92 it says, "Circumcision involved 00:34:17.95\00:34:20.46 Abraham's powers of pro-creation, 00:34:20.49\00:34:22.89 the area of life in which he had resorted to fleshly expediency 00:34:22.92\00:34:27.13 and he had failed. " 00:34:27.20\00:34:28.53 He had tried to do it in his own physical nature 00:34:28.56\00:34:31.63 and he had failed. 00:34:31.67\00:34:33.07 "Man's best plans and strength of will 00:34:33.10\00:34:35.27 would never bring about the promise. 00:34:35.30\00:34:37.41 For Abraham, circumcision was an act of repentance 00:34:37.44\00:34:41.14 and a sign of dependence upon God for the promise. 00:34:41.18\00:34:44.81 You see, circumcision would always represent to Abraham... 00:34:44.85\00:34:47.78 I'd never really processed that before... 00:34:47.82\00:34:49.38 it would represent the failure of dependency on his own flesh. 00:34:49.42\00:34:54.52 He tried to secure... see... through his own works 00:34:54.56\00:34:57.93 what he thought he could do instead of trusting in God. 00:34:57.96\00:35:01.66 Paul puts it this way in Philippians 3 verse 3, 00:35:01.70\00:35:05.37 "We are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, 00:35:05.40\00:35:09.20 rejoice in Christ Jesus, 00:35:09.24\00:35:11.07 and have no confidence... " what's that word? 00:35:11.11\00:35:13.34 "in the flesh. " 00:35:13.38\00:35:14.74 So, circumcision represents that we cannot do it 00:35:14.78\00:35:18.41 of our own strength 00:35:18.45\00:35:19.88 so, in Genesis 17, we see the covenant reiterated 00:35:19.91\00:35:24.15 and circumcision given as a sign 00:35:24.19\00:35:26.86 that God will justify us by faith. 00:35:26.89\00:35:29.56 Panel: Amen... that's great. 00:35:29.59\00:35:31.19 James: Thank you, Jill... well, moving right along, 00:35:31.23\00:35:33.63 we are moving into Genesis chapter 18... 00:35:33.66\00:35:36.43 so, we're looking at this son of promise 00:35:36.46\00:35:40.34 that comes in Genesis chapter 18. 00:35:40.37\00:35:42.54 Finally, the Lord is going to visit Abraham... 00:35:42.57\00:35:45.17 it says here in chapter 18... 00:35:45.21\00:35:46.88 by the way, my name is James Rafferty 00:35:46.91\00:35:48.24 and I have Wednesday's lesson. 00:35:48.28\00:35:49.78 Chapter 18 verse 1, 00:35:49.84\00:35:51.25 "The Lord appeared unto him... Abraham... 00:35:51.28\00:35:53.01 in the plains of Mamre, 00:35:53.05\00:35:54.38 and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day... " 00:35:54.42\00:35:56.28 that is Abraham sat in the tent door in the heat of the day, 00:35:56.32\00:35:58.22 "He lifted up his eyes and looked... " verse 2, 00:35:58.25\00:36:01.76 "and, lo, three men stood by him: 00:36:01.79\00:36:03.89 and when he saw them, 00:36:03.93\00:36:05.93 he ran to meet them from the tent door, 00:36:05.96\00:36:08.36 and bowed himself toward the ground. " 00:36:08.40\00:36:11.00 Now, we've got to take into consideration here 00:36:11.03\00:36:13.03 that Abraham is 99 years old at this point 00:36:13.07\00:36:18.07 but we've also got to remember that Abraham lived to be a 175. 00:36:18.11\00:36:22.64 So, he was probably... in our accounting... 00:36:22.68\00:36:25.71 he's probably in his 40s... 00:36:25.75\00:36:27.08 mid-forty... somewhere. 00:36:27.12\00:36:28.45 So he runs to meet these three strangers... 00:36:28.48\00:36:32.39 he bows himself before them... 00:36:32.42\00:36:34.06 one of them is the Lord because it says in verse 3, 00:36:34.09\00:36:36.26 "He said, 'My Lord if now I have found favor in Thy sight, 00:36:36.32\00:36:40.36 pass not away, I pray thee, from Thy servant. " 00:36:40.40\00:36:44.43 The lesson brings out that this word "my Lord" 00:36:44.47\00:36:48.50 is Adonai... a title often used for God 00:36:48.54\00:36:52.07 as in Genesis 20 verse 4... Exodus 15 verse 17... 00:36:52.11\00:36:55.81 so, he rushes around to take care of these guests, 00:36:55.84\00:36:59.48 he says, verse 4, 00:36:59.51\00:37:00.85 "Let the little water, I pray thee, 00:37:00.88\00:37:02.22 be fetched, and wash your feet, 00:37:02.25\00:37:03.65 and rest yourselves under the tree: 00:37:03.69\00:37:05.02 And I will fetch... " verse 5, 00:37:05.05\00:37:07.06 "a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; 00:37:07.09\00:37:09.72 after that ye shall pass on: 00:37:09.76\00:37:11.39 for therefore you are coming to your servant. 00:37:11.43\00:37:13.50 And they said, 'So do, as thou hast said. '" 00:37:13.53\00:37:16.83 I think that Paul references this 00:37:16.87\00:37:18.77 in the book of Hebrews chapter 13. 00:37:18.80\00:37:20.67 Don't be forgetful to entertain strangers 00:37:20.70\00:37:23.30 for some have entertained angels unawares, 00:37:23.34\00:37:25.91 right, and so Abraham considers these strangers 00:37:25.94\00:37:30.11 to be welcomed under his tents 00:37:30.15\00:37:32.81 and he rushes around at 99 years of age 00:37:32.85\00:37:36.52 that's 40s for us... to prepare a meal for them, 00:37:36.55\00:37:40.36 right, and so, verse 6, 00:37:40.42\00:37:42.02 "Abraham hastens into the tent unto Sarah, and said, 00:37:42.06\00:37:44.49 'Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, 00:37:44.53\00:37:46.80 knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth. ' 00:37:46.83\00:37:48.90 And Abraham ran to the herd, 00:37:48.93\00:37:50.27 and fetched a calf tender and good, 00:37:50.30\00:37:52.67 and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it. 00:37:52.70\00:37:55.54 And he took butter and milk, 00:37:55.57\00:37:57.34 and the calf which he had dressed... " verse 8, 00:37:57.37\00:37:59.37 "and he set it before them, 00:37:59.41\00:38:00.74 and he stood by them under the tree, 00:38:00.78\00:38:02.74 and they did eat. " 00:38:02.78\00:38:04.95 And this is a... is an... is an amazing picture. 00:38:04.98\00:38:07.02 Abraham not only prepares all of this food 00:38:07.05\00:38:09.65 but Abraham stands by. 00:38:09.68\00:38:11.55 If you've ever been to a very posh... a very nice restaurant, 00:38:11.59\00:38:14.72 we did this... 00:38:14.76\00:38:16.52 it was in the Philippines at the time 00:38:16.59\00:38:18.23 and in the Philippines, you can actually, get a pretty good 00:38:18.29\00:38:22.26 meal, at least back then when we were there, 00:38:22.30\00:38:23.70 you could actually get a pretty good posh environment 00:38:23.73\00:38:26.53 and meal for, you know, 00:38:26.57\00:38:28.27 a lot less than you would have to pay for it here 00:38:28.30\00:38:30.54 and when we were in this restaurant... 00:38:30.57\00:38:32.27 this very nice restaurant, 00:38:32.31\00:38:33.68 we had waiters standing between each one of our chairs... 00:38:33.71\00:38:36.61 Jill: Wow! 00:38:36.64\00:38:37.98 James: Every... with a napkin folded over ready to wait on us 00:38:38.01\00:38:40.82 to put our plates down... 00:38:40.85\00:38:42.48 to take our plates away... they didn't move, 00:38:42.55\00:38:44.35 you know, like waiters in our... our normal restaurants, 00:38:44.39\00:38:47.39 you see them maybe 15 or 20 minutes between times 00:38:47.42\00:38:50.56 but these waiters were right there... just standing there... 00:38:50.59\00:38:53.29 you can... this is the picture that we have of Abraham. 00:38:53.33\00:38:55.10 He's standing there with these strangers 00:38:55.16\00:38:58.10 and he is ready to wait on them... 00:38:58.13\00:39:00.04 he's ready to assist them... 00:39:00.07\00:39:01.40 ready to help them... ready to serve them. 00:39:01.44\00:39:03.34 This is the picture that we have. 00:39:03.37\00:39:04.71 I love this picture because it's... it's... 00:39:04.74\00:39:06.98 we'll get to the point here in a second. 00:39:07.01\00:39:09.24 So, it says there in verse 10, "He said unto him... " 00:39:09.28\00:39:12.21 or... the stranger said unto him, 00:39:12.25\00:39:14.68 he stood by as they eat... 00:39:14.72\00:39:16.05 "And they said unto him, 'Where is Sarah thy wife?' 00:39:16.08\00:39:18.45 And he said, 'Behold, in the tent. '" 00:39:18.49\00:39:21.82 Verse 10... "And He said, 00:39:21.86\00:39:24.26 'I will certainly return unto thee 00:39:24.29\00:39:26.49 according to the time of life; 00:39:26.53\00:39:27.86 and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. '" 00:39:27.90\00:39:32.20 Sarah thy wife shall have a son. 00:39:32.23\00:39:35.17 Now, Sarah heard this... 00:39:35.20\00:39:36.97 Sarah was wondering who these men were. 00:39:37.01\00:39:39.37 You can imagine her curiosity as is... is engaged here 00:39:39.41\00:39:41.34 and she's wondering, "Who are these men that are... 00:39:41.41\00:39:43.31 that are gathering there with my husband 00:39:43.35\00:39:46.08 that he's been so... you know, excited about... taking care of, 00:39:46.11\00:39:50.39 and she's listening at the door... 00:39:50.42\00:39:53.15 you know how you're curious and you're wondering 00:39:53.19\00:39:54.92 who this person is that your husband is talking to 00:39:54.96\00:39:56.86 on the phone... and he's so excited and he's... 00:39:56.89\00:39:58.49 and so, you're listening and you're listening 00:39:58.56\00:40:00.20 so, she hears this 00:40:00.23\00:40:01.73 and she hears these men talk about her having a son 00:40:01.76\00:40:04.40 and when she heard this... 00:40:04.43\00:40:07.17 in the tent door which was behind it, verse 11, 00:40:07.20\00:40:10.31 "Now Abraham and Sarah were very old 00:40:10.34\00:40:11.81 and well stricken in age; 00:40:11.84\00:40:13.41 and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. 00:40:13.44\00:40:16.04 Therefore Sarah laughed. " 00:40:16.08\00:40:17.41 Had to put that verse in there, verse 11 in there to explain 00:40:17.45\00:40:21.08 why it is that Sarah laughed in verse 12... 00:40:21.12\00:40:24.35 you have to... you know, 00:40:24.39\00:40:25.72 Sarah didn't just laugh out of nothing... 00:40:25.75\00:40:27.09 it wasn't just out of emptiness, 00:40:27.12\00:40:29.46 Sarah was focusing on her age... 00:40:29.49\00:40:31.36 she was focusing on her flesh... 00:40:31.39\00:40:33.19 she was focusing on herself 00:40:33.23\00:40:34.56 but not just her age... she was focusing on Abraham's age. 00:40:34.60\00:40:38.33 Right, she's looking at Abraham's age... 00:40:38.37\00:40:40.24 she's looking at her age... 00:40:40.27\00:40:41.60 she's listening to Adonai the Lord... 00:40:41.64\00:40:44.57 she's listening to the Lord and the angels. 00:40:44.61\00:40:46.61 She's listening to the Lord make this promise 00:40:46.64\00:40:48.61 and she's thinking about herself 00:40:48.64\00:40:51.21 and she can't help but laugh. 00:40:51.25\00:40:53.75 Panel: Laughter. 00:40:53.78\00:40:55.12 James: And how many times do we do that? 00:40:55.15\00:40:56.48 We'll get to that point in just a second... so she laughs 00:40:56.52\00:40:59.25 but then, here's what happens, 00:40:59.29\00:41:00.96 "Sarah laughs within herself, saying, 00:41:00.99\00:41:03.63 'After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, 00:41:03.66\00:41:07.70 my lord also being old?' 00:41:07.73\00:41:10.40 And the LORD said unto Abraham... " 00:41:10.43\00:41:13.57 Sarah's still not in the scene, she's back in the tent somewhere 00:41:13.60\00:41:17.14 "The Lord said unto Abraham, 'Wherefore did Sarah laugh, 00:41:17.17\00:41:20.91 saying, 'Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?'" 00:41:20.94\00:41:24.65 Oooo... "Is anything too hard for the Lord?" 00:41:24.68\00:41:26.95 I really like that, Jill, 00:41:26.98\00:41:28.32 is there anything too hard for the Lord? 00:41:28.35\00:41:29.68 Panel: Hmmm... yeah. 00:41:29.72\00:41:31.05 James: You know that verse in Jeremiah... 00:41:31.09\00:41:32.69 "At the time appointed, I will return 00:41:32.72\00:41:34.36 according to the time of life, 00:41:34.39\00:41:36.22 and Sarah shall have a son... " 00:41:36.26\00:41:38.83 and here's the last verse we're going to look at, 00:41:38.89\00:41:40.80 "Then Sarah denied, saying, 'I laughed not... ' 00:41:40.83\00:41:43.77 for she was afraid. 00:41:43.80\00:41:45.43 And He said, 'Nay, but thou did laugh. '" 00:41:45.47\00:41:50.11 So, here we have the whole package, if you will... 00:41:50.14\00:41:53.24 the whole package is here... 00:41:53.27\00:41:54.94 the whole package of salvation is... is contained 00:41:54.98\00:41:58.05 in this little story in Genesis chapter 18. 00:41:58.11\00:42:02.32 The son of promise is given here in contrast with Ishmael 00:42:02.35\00:42:09.32 and the failure of humanity... 00:42:09.39\00:42:11.49 it's when we fail... is when we fall flat on our face 00:42:11.53\00:42:14.20 that God comes to us with His promises. 00:42:14.26\00:42:16.26 It's... it's when we fail and we feel like giving up... 00:42:16.30\00:42:19.03 that we feel overwhelmed with guilt... that we feel like... 00:42:19.07\00:42:20.94 "You know, there's no hope for me... " 00:42:20.97\00:42:22.44 that's when God steps in 00:42:22.47\00:42:24.01 and Friends, you may feel like you failed God 00:42:24.04\00:42:26.44 and you've fallen from God and there's no hope for you 00:42:26.47\00:42:28.48 and you've backslidden and you just feel... 00:42:28.51\00:42:30.35 feel like you just messed everything up 00:42:30.38\00:42:32.15 and that's the time when God will step into your life 00:42:32.18\00:42:34.82 with His promises... 00:42:34.85\00:42:36.48 your promises are like ropes of sand 00:42:36.52\00:42:38.52 but His promises... "Is there anything too hard for the Lord?" 00:42:38.55\00:42:42.59 There's nothing in your life... 00:42:42.62\00:42:44.26 there's nothing in who you are... 00:42:44.29\00:42:45.83 there's nothing in your failures that's too hard for the Lord 00:42:45.86\00:42:48.10 to mend... to fix... to reconcile... 00:42:48.13\00:42:49.76 to save... that's the message that we find here 00:42:49.80\00:42:53.23 in Genesis chapter 18 00:42:53.27\00:42:54.90 but it's bigger than that. 00:42:54.94\00:42:56.30 You know, the 18th chapter of Genesis has this entire package, 00:42:56.34\00:42:59.47 it has the keys that are essential 00:42:59.51\00:43:01.74 to practical Christianity 00:43:01.78\00:43:03.51 because it pictures Christ... the Son of Promise. 00:43:03.55\00:43:05.41 "You're going to have a child... " 00:43:05.45\00:43:06.98 well, this child was the beginning of the Seed 00:43:07.02\00:43:10.09 that was to point to Jesus Christ the Messiah. 00:43:10.12\00:43:13.72 It was salvation by faith that Adonai... 00:43:13.76\00:43:16.89 that the Lord was sharing with Abraham here. 00:43:16.93\00:43:18.89 It was salvation by faith in contrast to our unbelief 00:43:18.93\00:43:23.26 and our failure. 00:43:23.30\00:43:24.87 It was the final end of those who would... 00:43:24.90\00:43:27.37 who... who put their trust in themselves 00:43:27.44\00:43:29.84 and now transition to putting their trust in the Lord 00:43:29.87\00:43:33.14 and by the way, this message came 00:43:33.17\00:43:34.81 just before the Lord was on His way to Sodom and Gomorrah 00:43:34.84\00:43:38.15 so, you have the final end of the wicked also... 00:43:38.18\00:43:40.62 the final end of those who reject Christ 00:43:40.65\00:43:42.92 that's going to be touched on here as we go on. 00:43:42.98\00:43:45.35 I don't have that part of the lesson 00:43:45.39\00:43:47.06 so, the Son of Promise points to Jesus Christ 00:43:47.09\00:43:49.76 who's a type of... Isaac was a type of. 00:43:49.82\00:43:52.03 Then we have this picture of our unbelief... 00:43:52.06\00:43:54.00 you know, Sarah is laughing 00:43:54.03\00:43:55.36 and she's laughing at the promise of God. 00:43:55.40\00:43:58.03 How many times do we laugh 00:43:58.07\00:43:59.43 when we think about, you know, what God really wants for us, 00:43:59.47\00:44:02.94 and we just say, "You know, It's... that's... pshhhh... 00:44:02.97\00:44:04.74 that just can't happen. " 00:44:04.77\00:44:06.11 And then, of course, we have this next stage 00:44:06.14\00:44:08.68 where Sarah actually justifies her laughing. 00:44:08.71\00:44:11.75 She justifies... or let me put it this way, 00:44:11.81\00:44:14.88 she tries to justify that she didn't laugh... 00:44:14.92\00:44:17.99 she tries to justify herself and say, 00:44:18.02\00:44:19.39 "Hey, no, no, no, I didn't do that... 00:44:19.45\00:44:20.79 I do believe in God. " 00:44:20.82\00:44:22.22 How many times do we say we believe in God 00:44:22.26\00:44:24.99 but we don't actually believe in God. 00:44:25.03\00:44:27.40 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:44:27.43\00:44:28.76 James: We're... we're... we're, we're actually laughing at God 00:44:28.80\00:44:30.53 but then we say, "No, no, no, no, I didn't... 00:44:30.57\00:44:32.17 I wasn't laughing at God, I do believe in God... 00:44:32.20\00:44:33.64 really, I do believe in God but I wasn't laughing at God" 00:44:33.67\00:44:35.67 but inside we are. 00:44:35.70\00:44:37.04 Inside we really do have that unbelief... 00:44:37.07\00:44:39.57 inside we really are not trusting fully 00:44:39.61\00:44:42.21 in the promises of God 00:44:42.24\00:44:43.58 and then it goes on here and it includes this picture, 00:44:43.61\00:44:47.88 I think it's the most important picture of hospitality. 00:44:47.92\00:44:52.35 I mean, that's where it all starts... 00:44:52.39\00:44:54.06 the hospitality Abraham has to these three strangers 00:44:54.09\00:44:56.76 when you look in Matthew chapter 25 00:44:56.79\00:44:59.43 and you look at the final judgment that comes upon 00:44:59.46\00:45:03.16 those who believe in God and those who don't. 00:45:03.20\00:45:06.43 It all boils down to this spirit of hospitality. 00:45:06.47\00:45:09.54 I think it's the greatest test I know for... for many of us 00:45:09.57\00:45:11.77 you know, being hospitable to strangers, 00:45:11.81\00:45:13.58 you know, helping people who maybe you don't even know... 00:45:13.61\00:45:17.31 who need our help 00:45:17.35\00:45:18.68 and Jesus talks about this in Matthew 25 verses 34 and onward, 00:45:18.71\00:45:22.58 "The King shall say to them on his right hand, 00:45:22.65\00:45:25.35 'Come, ye blessed of My Father, 00:45:25.39\00:45:27.26 inherit the kingdom prepared for you 00:45:27.29\00:45:28.62 from the foundation of the world: 00:45:28.66\00:45:29.99 For I was hungry, and you gave me meat: 00:45:30.03\00:45:31.36 I was thirsty, and you gave me drink: 00:45:31.39\00:45:32.73 I was a stranger, and you took me in: 00:45:32.76\00:45:34.10 I was naked, you clothed me: 00:45:34.13\00:45:35.46 I was in prison, and you came to me... ' 00:45:35.50\00:45:36.83 and then the righteous shall say unto Him, 00:45:36.87\00:45:38.20 'When did we do this? 00:45:38.23\00:45:39.57 when did we... we feed You and give you water to drink 00:45:39.60\00:45:42.84 and took You in, and... and clothed You? 00:45:42.87\00:45:45.04 and... and visited You in prison, 00:45:45.07\00:45:47.28 and came when You were sick?' 00:45:47.31\00:45:48.64 And the King shall answer and say unto them, 00:45:48.68\00:45:50.01 'Whenever you did it to the least of these my Brethren, 00:45:50.05\00:45:52.71 you did it unto Me. '" 00:45:52.75\00:45:55.18 Panel: Hmmm... amen... amen. 00:45:55.22\00:45:56.92 Ryan: Thank you guys so much. 00:45:56.95\00:45:58.29 As always, on Thursday's lesson, I get to learn so much 00:45:58.32\00:46:02.02 and glean from everyone before me. 00:46:02.06\00:46:03.56 I'm Ryan Day and I have Thursday's lesson entitled: 00:46:03.59\00:46:06.46 Lot in Sodom. 00:46:06.49\00:46:08.96 Do a little bit of background here 00:46:09.00\00:46:10.77 because I don't think we've sufficiently talked about 00:46:10.80\00:46:12.43 who Lot is... 00:46:12.47\00:46:13.80 Lot is the nephew of Abraham 00:46:13.84\00:46:15.40 and so, if we go back to... 00:46:15.44\00:46:16.94 we're not going to go... we're not going to read this 00:46:16.97\00:46:18.44 but if you go back to the 13th and 14th chapter of Genesis, 00:46:18.47\00:46:21.91 you'll see that Lot had separated from Abraham 00:46:21.94\00:46:25.88 at this point. 00:46:25.91\00:46:27.25 He had taken his family to Sodom... to the city of Sodom 00:46:27.28\00:46:31.49 which... the Bible makes it very clear... 00:46:31.52\00:46:33.15 it was a very wicked city. 00:46:33.19\00:46:35.09 Now, when he separated from Abraham, 00:46:35.12\00:46:36.52 instead of going into a direction or into a land 00:46:36.56\00:46:38.99 where he could inhabit himself 00:46:39.03\00:46:40.36 and start his own... you know, his own life... 00:46:40.40\00:46:42.26 his own house... maybe out in the plains... 00:46:42.33\00:46:44.30 maybe out... you know... separate from the big cities, 00:46:44.33\00:46:46.87 he goes into the big city... the wicked city of Sodom 00:46:46.90\00:46:49.44 and so, you know that there's nothing good 00:46:49.47\00:46:51.04 that's going to come of this and sure enough, you know, 00:46:51.07\00:46:53.34 not once but twice now we find Lot gets in trouble 00:46:53.38\00:46:56.18 and he has to be saved... not once but twice. 00:46:56.24\00:46:58.91 You know once when he was taken captive from Sodom 00:46:58.95\00:47:01.62 and then Abraham has to go save him 00:47:01.68\00:47:03.12 and now the Lord... okay, 00:47:03.15\00:47:05.52 Jill referred to this earlier as a... as a Theophany, 00:47:05.55\00:47:08.29 this is no doubt... you can even go as far to call it: 00:47:08.32\00:47:11.03 A Christophany... this is Jesus Christ, I believe, 00:47:11.06\00:47:13.19 no doubt... Jesus Christ in the flesh... 00:47:13.23\00:47:14.96 He has come to visit Abraham and now He has gotten up... 00:47:15.00\00:47:19.23 these three gentlemen have gotten up 00:47:19.30\00:47:21.27 and now they're... they're going to make their way, 00:47:21.30\00:47:23.20 they're leaving Abraham's presence 00:47:23.24\00:47:24.71 but before this happens, 00:47:24.74\00:47:26.91 now the two men which were no doubt angels... 00:47:26.94\00:47:29.04 they go on to Sodom but the Lord lingers back for a moment 00:47:29.08\00:47:32.05 to speak with Abraham 00:47:32.08\00:47:33.42 and then the latter verses of... of... of Genesis chapter 18... 00:47:33.45\00:47:38.29 we have this... we have this interesting conversation 00:47:38.32\00:47:41.32 between Abraham and the Lord 00:47:41.36\00:47:42.96 in which the Lord makes it known to him 00:47:42.99\00:47:45.29 what's about to happen. 00:47:45.33\00:47:46.73 Let's read Genesis chapter 18 verses 20 through 21, 00:47:46.76\00:47:49.76 I wish I could read all these verses 00:47:49.80\00:47:51.13 but we simply don't have enough time 00:47:51.17\00:47:52.50 but lets at least read verses 20 and 21, 00:47:52.53\00:47:54.87 it says, "And the LORD said, 00:47:54.90\00:47:57.07 'Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, 00:47:57.11\00:48:01.18 and because their sin is very grave, 00:48:01.24\00:48:04.05 I will go down and... '" notice this, 00:48:04.08\00:48:06.82 "now and see whether they have done 00:48:06.88\00:48:09.38 altogether according to the outcry against it 00:48:09.42\00:48:12.72 that has come to Me; and if not, I will know. " 00:48:12.75\00:48:15.99 Now, my Friends, take this in... 00:48:16.02\00:48:17.36 I love these stories in Genesis because this... 00:48:17.39\00:48:20.26 my mind immediately goes to Luke chapter 24 00:48:20.30\00:48:23.13 where Jesus is having this encounter with the two disciples 00:48:23.16\00:48:25.13 on the road to Emmaus... 00:48:25.17\00:48:26.50 He gives them this incredible Bible Study 00:48:26.53\00:48:28.70 and it says... starting with Moses and the prophets... 00:48:28.74\00:48:31.97 He basically reveals to him through the Scripture 00:48:32.01\00:48:34.68 the... the things pertaining to Himself... 00:48:34.74\00:48:36.58 speaking of Christ... 00:48:36.64\00:48:37.98 He's showing Himself through the Scriptures 00:48:38.01\00:48:39.55 and I believe when we get into the book of Genesis, 00:48:39.58\00:48:42.02 many people think, "Oh, it's Genesis... 00:48:42.05\00:48:43.49 it's the beginning... it's the origins... 00:48:43.52\00:48:45.49 we can't see Christ in... in the Scriptures. 00:48:45.52\00:48:48.19 Christ is flooded in imagery... in foreshadowing 00:48:48.22\00:48:50.83 all through this book 00:48:50.86\00:48:52.36 and not just Jesus but also, I believe, 00:48:52.39\00:48:54.53 in these passages that we're reading here, 00:48:54.56\00:48:56.67 the stories of Abraham and Isaac 00:48:56.70\00:48:58.90 and Jacob and Joseph and all of these powerful stories, 00:48:58.93\00:49:01.80 there is beautiful foreshadowing in imagery 00:49:01.84\00:49:04.11 that even points forward to the future prophetically 00:49:04.14\00:49:07.18 what the church is going to have to go through in the last days 00:49:07.21\00:49:09.78 and what's we're about to study in that little time... 00:49:09.81\00:49:11.95 pray for that clock because we don't have a lot of time... 00:49:12.01\00:49:14.02 in the little time that we have, 00:49:14.08\00:49:15.62 I want to show you the interesting thing 00:49:15.65\00:49:17.45 that Lot and his family are going through 00:49:17.49\00:49:19.19 with this destruction of Sodom is very similar 00:49:19.25\00:49:22.22 to what we also are going through here in the last days 00:49:22.26\00:49:24.79 and what we will have to go through 00:49:24.83\00:49:26.16 and the decision-making that needs to be made 00:49:26.19\00:49:28.40 before the destruction of this world. 00:49:28.43\00:49:30.27 So, interestingly enough, what's happening here, 00:49:30.30\00:49:33.00 notice how Jesus says to Abraham, 00:49:33.03\00:49:35.00 "Look Abraham, I'm going to make known to you 00:49:35.04\00:49:37.04 what I'm about to do. " 00:49:37.07\00:49:38.41 Remember the angels... the two angels that came with Him, 00:49:38.44\00:49:40.18 they've already made their way... 00:49:40.24\00:49:41.58 they've already made... they've walked away at this point, 00:49:41.64\00:49:44.51 they're on their way to Sodom. 00:49:44.55\00:49:45.88 Jesus lingers back and says, "Look, what's about to happen 00:49:45.91\00:49:48.05 is... I'm about to go down and see Sodom. 00:49:48.08\00:49:51.25 In other words, He's about to go down and investigate. 00:49:51.29\00:49:54.99 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... hmmm... hmmm... 00:49:55.02\00:49:57.33 Ryan: There's an Investigative Judgment about Sodom... 00:49:57.36\00:50:01.46 toward Sodom before this destruction happens, 00:50:01.50\00:50:03.67 in other words, God's going to go down 00:50:03.70\00:50:05.03 and He's going to reveal... 00:50:05.07\00:50:06.40 He's going to see what's happening... 00:50:06.43\00:50:07.77 what this city is about... 00:50:07.80\00:50:09.14 He's going to investigate... to see and of course, 00:50:09.17\00:50:10.54 Abraham... when he finds out exactly what's about to happen, 00:50:10.57\00:50:13.04 now, he begins to plead with God... 00:50:13.07\00:50:14.41 "O Lord, what about all the righteous in the city? 00:50:14.44\00:50:17.61 If there's 50 righteous people, will you save the city?" 00:50:17.65\00:50:20.78 God, of course, in all of His grace and mercy says, 00:50:20.82\00:50:22.78 "Of course Abraham, if I can find 50 righteous people, 00:50:22.82\00:50:24.79 I'll spare the city. " 00:50:24.82\00:50:26.15 "What about 45?" 00:50:26.19\00:50:27.52 "If there's 45, I'll save the city. " 00:50:27.56\00:50:28.89 "What about 30... what about 20... " 00:50:28.92\00:50:30.66 and he goes all the way down to ten... 00:50:30.69\00:50:32.36 "Lord, if you find ten people that's righteous in the city, 00:50:32.39\00:50:35.36 will you spare it?" 00:50:35.43\00:50:36.77 "Look, I'll spare it... 00:50:36.80\00:50:38.13 I'll spare it if I can find ten righteous. " 00:50:38.17\00:50:40.14 And so, now He goes on to the city. 00:50:40.17\00:50:43.14 Now, we're picking up in verse 1 of... 00:50:43.17\00:50:44.81 of Genesis chapter 19. 00:50:44.84\00:50:46.47 It says, "Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening" 00:50:46.51\00:50:49.18 so, now they've... they've arrived at Sodom. 00:50:49.21\00:50:51.01 "And Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom. 00:50:51.05\00:50:53.11 When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, 00:50:53.15\00:50:55.08 and he bowed himself with his face to toward the ground. 00:50:55.12\00:50:56.79 And he said, 'Here now, my lords, 00:50:56.82\00:50:58.79 please turn in to your servant's house and spend the night, 00:50:58.82\00:51:02.62 and wash your feet; 00:51:02.66\00:51:03.99 then you may rise early and go your way. " 00:52:06.69\00:52:08.82 Panel: Hmmm... Jill: Seriously? 00:52:08.86\00:52:10.76 Ryan: It's like...
