" 00:02:31.88\00:02:34.48 Panel: Amen. 00:02:34.52\00:02:35.85 James: Well, I get to start this out: All Nations and Babel, 00:02:35.88\00:02:37.82 Sabbath afternoon's lesson is all about the memory text 00:02:37.85\00:02:43.56 in Genesis chapter 11 and verse 9, 00:02:43.59\00:02:45.69 so, let's just read that memory text, 00:02:45.76\00:02:47.83 Genesis chapter 11 and verse 9, 00:02:47.86\00:02:49.53 it says, "Therefore its name is called Babel, 00:02:49.56\00:02:53.60 because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; 00:02:53.64\00:02:57.31 and from there the Lord scattered them abroad 00:02:57.34\00:03:00.28 over the face of all the earth. " 00:03:00.31\00:03:03.65 Now, the lesson starts out with this paragraph of introduction, 00:03:03.68\00:03:06.45 if you will, it says, 00:03:06.48\00:03:07.82 "After the flood, the Biblical account shifts 00:03:07.85\00:03:10.45 from focus on the single individual, Noah, 00:03:10.49\00:03:13.42 to his three sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth. 00:03:13.46\00:03:16.32 The particular attention on Ham, the father of Canaan 00:03:16.39\00:03:19.89 introduces the idea of "Canaan," the Promised Land, 00:03:19.93\00:03:23.40 Genesis 12 verse 5 00:03:23.43\00:03:24.77 and Genesis 10:6 and 15, 00:03:24.80\00:03:26.80 in anticipation of Abraham, 00:03:26.84\00:03:29.47 whose blessings will go to all nations. " 00:03:29.50\00:03:32.07 So, what we have here is a culmination, if you will. 00:03:32.14\00:03:35.04 We've gone through the... the plan of salvation 00:03:35.08\00:03:37.88 in the context of the creation and the fall. 00:03:37.91\00:03:40.72 So, God starts out with Adam and Eve. 00:03:40.75\00:03:43.25 They fall and God moves to Cain and Abel and then Seth. 00:03:43.28\00:03:48.66 Seth's descendants mingle with the children of men... 00:03:48.69\00:03:53.53 the sons of God compromising their high calling in God 00:03:53.56\00:03:58.37 and so, then God brings us to Noah and his family 00:03:58.40\00:04:01.54 and Noah and his family preach for a 120 years 00:04:01.60\00:04:04.24 so, God is basically going from Adam and Eve... 00:04:04.27\00:04:06.91 that's the first try 00:04:06.94\00:04:08.28 and then He goes to Abel and then Seth... that's the 2nd 00:04:08.31\00:04:10.78 and then we go to Noah and his family... that's the 3rd... 00:04:10.81\00:04:13.55 and basically, Noah is faithful to God 00:04:13.58\00:04:16.25 but after the flood... well there's some compromise 00:04:16.28\00:04:18.39 that takes place... 00:04:18.42\00:04:19.75 you can imagine the devil and his angels 00:04:19.79\00:04:21.46 just have those eight people to focus on... 00:04:21.49\00:04:23.63 how challenging that can be and so, we see Noah... 00:04:23.66\00:04:26.16 we'll talk about this... drunk in his tent, right? 00:04:26.19\00:04:28.13 Ryan: Hmmm... 00:04:28.16\00:04:29.50 James: And some things going on there 00:04:29.53\00:04:31.13 and then finally, we hear about Abraham 00:04:31.20\00:04:32.97 and Abraham is going to be the fourth and final attempt 00:04:33.00\00:04:35.87 that God is going to make to bring forth the Seed... 00:04:35.90\00:04:38.44 Jesus Christ... and that's really what it's all about. 00:04:38.47\00:04:40.78 It's all about Jesus... we're focusing on Christ... 00:04:40.81\00:04:43.08 and Abraham is the one through whose seed 00:04:43.11\00:04:47.18 Jesus Christ eventually comes to this earth to rescue us 00:04:47.22\00:04:51.35 from our mistakes and from our sins. 00:04:51.39\00:04:53.59 So... "However the line is broken... " 00:04:53.62\00:04:55.76 the Sabbath School says, "by the Tower of Babel 00:04:55.79\00:04:58.36 and then, once again, God's plan for humankind is disrupted. " 00:04:58.39\00:05:02.13 So, what are we supposed to be looking for in all of this? 00:05:02.16\00:05:05.87 It says, "What was supposed to be a blessing, 00:05:05.90\00:05:07.97 the birth of all nations, 00:05:08.00\00:05:09.34 becomes another occasion for another curse. 00:05:09.37\00:05:11.14 The nations unite in order to try to take God's place; 00:05:11.17\00:05:14.34 God responds in judgments on them; 00:05:14.38\00:05:16.61 and, through the resulting confusion, 00:05:16.64\00:05:18.81 the people get scattered throughout the world... 00:05:18.85\00:05:20.55 thus fulfilling God's original plan to 'fill the earth. '" 00:05:20.58\00:05:23.92 So, out of that confusion finally comes Abraham. 00:05:23.99\00:05:28.36 So, we've gone through these four stages, 00:05:28.39\00:05:29.72 Adam and Eve... 00:05:29.76\00:05:31.09 Abel and Seth... 00:05:31.13\00:05:32.46 then Noah and his sons... 00:05:32.49\00:05:33.83 and finally, Abraham is going to come out of all of this 00:05:33.86\00:05:35.90 and in the end, in spite of human wickedness, 00:05:35.93\00:05:38.23 God turns evil into good; 00:05:38.27\00:05:39.73 He has, as always, the last word. 00:05:39.77\00:05:41.74 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... amen... 00:05:41.77\00:05:43.67 James: The curse of Ham in the father's tent 00:05:43.71\00:05:45.37 and the curse of the confused nations at the Tower of Babel 00:05:45.41\00:05:48.28 will, eventually, be turned into a blessing 00:05:48.31\00:05:50.81 for all the nations. 00:05:50.85\00:05:52.18 I think there's a Bible verse in Romans chapter 8 00:05:52.21\00:05:54.62 that talks about that 00:05:54.65\00:05:55.98 that all things work together for good 00:05:56.02\00:05:57.72 right, to them who love God 00:05:57.75\00:06:00.46 who are called according to His purpose. 00:06:00.49\00:06:01.99 So, we can trust God that He is going to bring out good 00:06:02.02\00:06:05.76 even out of our mistakes and out of our failures. 00:06:05.79\00:06:07.76 Not that He wants us to make mistakes and failures 00:06:07.80\00:06:10.07 because, when we fall... when we make mistakes... 00:06:10.10\00:06:12.30 when we fall short of His glory, 00:06:12.33\00:06:13.87 when we sin, we reap the consequence to that 00:06:13.90\00:06:16.24 and the consequence that brings sadness to the heart of God 00:06:16.27\00:06:19.07 and so, God wants to deliver us not only from our failures 00:06:19.11\00:06:21.88 but also from the consequences... 00:06:21.94\00:06:23.58 from continuing to live in those failures. 00:06:23.61\00:06:26.15 So, the curse of Ham is Sunday's lesson 00:06:26.18\00:06:28.62 and it starts here in Genesis chapter 9 verses 18 to 27. 00:06:28.65\00:06:33.32 Genesis 9:18 to 27, 00:06:33.36\00:06:35.49 It's a strange story, 00:06:35.52\00:06:37.63 at least that's what the Sabbath School Lesson says 00:06:37.66\00:06:39.49 and it asks the question, 00:06:39.53\00:06:40.96 "What is the message of this strange story?" 00:06:41.00\00:06:43.73 So, Genesis chapter 9 verses 18 to 27, 00:06:43.77\00:06:47.44 I don't know if I want to read all of these verses 00:06:47.47\00:06:50.24 but let me just paraphrase what takes place here. 00:06:50.27\00:06:53.01 The sons of Noah go forth from the ark, 00:06:53.04\00:06:55.71 Shem, Japheth and Ham 00:06:55.74\00:06:57.08 and as they go forth and begin to spread over the world... 00:06:57.11\00:07:01.22 Noah begins to be an husbandman, he plants a vineyard 00:07:01.25\00:07:03.79 and he drinks of the vineyard 00:07:03.82\00:07:05.99 and ends up being drunk in his tent 00:07:06.02\00:07:09.16 and it says here in verses 21 and 22, 00:07:09.19\00:07:12.29 that when he was drunken in his tent, he was uncovered 00:07:12.33\00:07:15.56 and it says in verse 22 that Ham the father of Canaan 00:07:15.60\00:07:18.80 saw the nakedness of his father 00:07:18.83\00:07:20.74 and told his two brethren without 00:07:20.77\00:07:22.60 and so, then the two brethren, Shem and Japheth... 00:07:22.64\00:07:25.61 they took a garment and they laid it on their shoulders 00:07:25.64\00:07:27.81 and they went in backwards. 00:07:27.84\00:07:29.18 So, they didn't see the nakedness of their father, 00:07:29.21\00:07:31.11 they went in backwards 00:07:31.15\00:07:32.48 and they covered the nakedness of their father, 00:07:32.51\00:07:34.98 and when Noah woke in verse 24, 00:07:35.02\00:07:37.35 he knew what the younger son had done to him 00:07:37.39\00:07:40.32 and he said, "Cursed be Canaan; 00:07:40.36\00:07:41.79 a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren. 00:07:41.82\00:07:43.76 And blessed be the God of Shem and Canaan shall be his servant 00:07:43.79\00:07:49.60 and God shall enlarge Japheth 00:07:49.63\00:07:51.60 and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem 00:07:51.63\00:07:54.04 and Canaan shall be his servant. " 00:07:54.07\00:07:56.17 So, it's a strange story in a sense 00:07:56.20\00:07:58.87 and I know there's been a lot of ideas 00:07:58.91\00:08:01.54 about what was it that happened, 00:08:01.58\00:08:03.35 what was this terrible thing that happened in this tent 00:08:03.38\00:08:07.32 with Ham because basically, Noah cursed him 00:08:07.35\00:08:10.32 and people will come up with all kinds of ideas 00:08:10.39\00:08:13.96 and primarily because you know the curse was so bad 00:08:13.99\00:08:17.53 and the other brothers, you know, 00:08:17.56\00:08:18.89 refused to do whatever it was that he did 00:08:18.93\00:08:20.86 and... and you get this idea 00:08:20.90\00:08:23.63 that there was some kind of immorality that took place there 00:08:23.67\00:08:26.37 I think the Sabbath School Quarterly 00:08:26.40\00:08:28.74 really nails it for us, 00:08:28.77\00:08:30.11 it's so simple that we might miss it. 00:08:30.14\00:08:33.84 The Sabbath School Quarterly takes us to Exodus chapter 20... 00:08:33.88\00:08:37.81 Exodus chapter 20, let's just open our Bibles there 00:08:37.85\00:08:40.82 to Exodus chapter 20 and we're going to find ourselves... 00:08:40.85\00:08:42.88 in Exodus chapter 20, we're going to find ourselves 00:08:42.92\00:08:46.19 right in the middle of the Ten Commandments of God. 00:08:46.22\00:08:48.99 Panel: Ah ha... 00:08:49.02\00:08:50.36 James: God's Ten Commandments, Exodus chapter 20 00:08:50.39\00:08:52.43 and as we move through the Commandments of God 00:08:52.46\00:08:54.26 and by the way, just so that we know this, 00:08:54.30\00:08:56.60 the Ten Commandments are really the standard 00:08:56.63\00:08:58.90 that identify what sin is... 00:08:58.93\00:09:00.50 what immorality is... 00:09:00.54\00:09:02.00 what righteousness is. 00:09:02.04\00:09:03.41 We're told in 1st John 5:17, "All unrighteousness is sin... " 00:09:03.47\00:09:06.91 we're told in 1st John 3:4, sin is transgression of the law. 00:09:06.98\00:09:10.38 We're told in Romans chapter 3 00:09:10.41\00:09:12.15 that all have sinned and have come short of the glory of God, 00:09:12.18\00:09:14.68 the glory of God is a revelation of His character of love 00:09:14.72\00:09:17.52 and the commandments, we're told in... in Matthew 22 00:09:17.55\00:09:20.09 are a revelation of loving God with all our heart, 00:09:20.12\00:09:22.32 mind and soul and loving our neighbor as ourself. 00:09:22.39\00:09:24.49 The fulfillment of the commandment is to love 00:09:24.53\00:09:26.66 and so, when we put all of this together, 00:09:26.70\00:09:28.76 we realize that Exodus chapter 20 is the standard 00:09:28.80\00:09:32.73 against which every human being is measured even Ham. 00:09:32.77\00:09:36.67 Now, when we look in here in Exodus chapter 20, 00:09:36.71\00:09:39.17 we just want to pick up with verse 12. 00:09:39.24\00:09:41.74 Exodus 20 and verse 12, 00:09:41.78\00:09:43.71 "Honor thy father and thy mother, 00:09:43.75\00:09:47.08 that thy days may be long upon the land 00:09:47.12\00:09:50.02 which the Lord thy God giveth thee. " 00:09:50.05\00:09:52.55 And I have to ask the question right now 00:09:52.59\00:09:55.09 to all of you and our audience, 00:09:55.12\00:09:57.83 could it be this simple? 00:09:57.86\00:09:59.93 Panel: Yes. James: Could it be this simple? 00:09:59.96\00:10:02.23 We are trying to figure out what terrible act of immorality 00:10:02.26\00:10:06.13 Ham committed against his father... 00:10:06.17\00:10:08.24 could be just as simple as the fact 00:10:08.27\00:10:10.51 that he did not honor his father? 00:10:10.54\00:10:12.91 That rather than cover his father, 00:10:12.97\00:10:15.28 he went out and started whispering about his father. 00:10:15.31\00:10:19.48 He started gossiping about his father, 00:10:19.51\00:10:21.08 he started telling the others, 00:10:21.12\00:10:22.45 "Guess what? Dad's drunk in the tent and he's naked... 00:10:22.48\00:10:26.42 isn't that terrible?" 00:10:26.45\00:10:28.36 And we think, "Oh, you know, 00:10:28.39\00:10:30.09 that's not so big of a deal, is it?" 00:10:30.13\00:10:33.13 Panel: Right. 00:10:33.16\00:10:34.50 James: To talk about people... to whisper about people... 00:10:34.53\00:10:36.53 to talk about their failures... 00:10:36.56\00:10:38.17 to talk about how they've uncovered themselves... 00:10:38.20\00:10:41.77 how they've fallen short... that's not a big deal is it? 00:10:41.80\00:10:45.37 Well, it's interesting because 00:10:45.41\00:10:47.41 we know it's a violation of the commandments of God 00:10:47.44\00:10:49.58 and we know again that breaking God's commandments is a sin... 00:10:49.64\00:10:53.48 it's immorality... sinful enough. 00:10:53.52\00:10:56.35 Now, sometimes we say, 00:10:56.38\00:10:57.79 "Well, you know, stealing and killing and coveting and 00:10:57.82\00:11:01.22 those are the big commandments, 00:11:01.26\00:11:02.59 now, those are the real bad commandments 00:11:02.62\00:11:04.56 but I'm wondering if today in our age, 00:11:04.59\00:11:06.59 we've forgotten this fifth commandment. 00:11:06.63\00:11:08.33 Panel: That's right... ah ha... 00:11:08.36\00:11:09.70 James: We've forgotten the importance of protecting 00:11:09.73\00:11:12.40 the elderly... 00:11:12.43\00:11:13.80 of... of taking care of our parents... 00:11:13.84\00:11:16.37 of... of... of being an advocate for those who are older 00:11:16.40\00:11:20.91 and maybe not able to take care of themselves. 00:11:20.94\00:11:22.98 I wonder if we're living in a society 00:11:23.04\00:11:24.88 where the elderly are 00:11:24.91\00:11:26.45 well... they're just second-class citizens. 00:11:26.51\00:11:28.62 I mean, they're almost gone anyway, right? 00:11:28.65\00:11:30.72 And God is bringing out a very important point here 00:11:30.75\00:11:34.62 in Exodus chapter 20 and verse 5, 00:11:34.66\00:11:37.76 excuse me... verse 12 00:11:37.79\00:11:40.06 and also, in relationship to Ham. 00:11:40.10\00:11:42.26 He's bringing out a very important point and that is... 00:11:42.30\00:11:46.33 honoring our parents is a vital part of morality today. 00:11:46.37\00:11:50.04 Ryan: That's right. 00:11:50.11\00:11:51.44 James: And Ham dishonored his... his father. 00:11:51.47\00:11:53.21 He dishonored Noah who had preached for a 120 years... 00:11:53.27\00:11:56.54 who really was the very way that God saved Ham 00:11:56.58\00:11:59.61 and his brothers and their wives 00:11:59.68\00:12:01.65 and... and continue to keep this whole earth or... 00:12:01.68\00:12:05.59 or whole survival alive. 00:12:05.62\00:12:07.59 Noah was faithful... 00:12:07.62\00:12:09.19 can you imagine if there was no Noah... 00:12:09.22\00:12:10.86 Panel: Hmmm... that's right. 00:12:10.89\00:12:12.23 James: No man preaching for a 120 years... 00:12:12.26\00:12:13.60 yeah, I've been preaching for almost four decades 00:12:13.63\00:12:15.76 and it seems like a long time, what do you say? 00:12:15.80\00:12:18.30 I mean, some of us can relate to that. 00:12:18.33\00:12:21.80 A 120 years... that's the re-generation... 00:12:21.84\00:12:25.24 it's 40... 80... a 120... Noah was faithful. 00:12:25.27\00:12:28.04 You know, in Romans chapter 1, 00:12:28.08\00:12:29.54 it talks about all the different sins 00:12:29.58\00:12:31.35 and wickedness and immorality 00:12:31.38\00:12:32.71 that are alive in the world today 00:12:32.75\00:12:34.08 and a lot of times, we go there to talk about homosexuality 00:12:34.12\00:12:37.39 because it's outlined there but we sometimes stop with that 00:12:37.42\00:12:40.86 and we don't go on to let God describe to us 00:12:40.89\00:12:44.56 those who are disobedient to parents... 00:12:44.59\00:12:46.86 that are the same category as all this other immorality 00:12:46.90\00:12:50.07 and those who are whisperers in the same category 00:12:50.10\00:12:52.47 as all of these other immorality 00:12:52.53\00:12:54.70 and how much whispering and backbiting and... and gossiping 00:12:54.74\00:12:58.21 has damaged families and churches 00:12:58.24\00:13:01.08 and communities and societies? 00:13:01.11\00:13:03.31 And a lot of times, of course, 00:13:03.35\00:13:05.48 today we call it: misinformation, right? 00:13:05.51\00:13:07.48 Panel: Laughter. 00:13:07.52\00:13:08.85 James: But the truth of the matter is 00:13:08.88\00:13:10.59 God wants us to have the right information... 00:13:10.62\00:13:13.22 He wants us to have good information... 00:13:13.25\00:13:14.59 He wants us to have truthful information 00:13:14.62\00:13:15.96 and He wants us to cover up a multitude of sins 00:13:15.99\00:13:19.16 through this experience of grace and mercy 00:13:19.19\00:13:23.63 and that's what Ham didn't have 00:13:23.67\00:13:25.93 and that's what we need to have, Brothers and Sisters. 00:13:25.97\00:13:27.87 God is calling us to a higher experience. 00:13:27.90\00:13:30.07 He's calling us to cover up others... 00:13:30.11\00:13:32.24 to go backward not to look... not to stare... 00:13:32.27\00:13:34.74 and not to whisper... and not to criticize... 00:13:34.78\00:13:37.25 not to gossip about others 00:13:37.28\00:13:39.11 but He's calling us to cover up as much as we can 00:13:39.15\00:13:41.58 while we stand for the truth... 00:13:41.62\00:13:43.12 we want to stand for truth... 00:13:43.15\00:13:44.62 we want to stand for righteousness 00:13:44.65\00:13:46.22 but at the same time, we want to be careful 00:13:46.25\00:13:48.19 how we talk about other people 00:13:48.22\00:13:50.13 and the failings and faults that they may fall into. 00:13:50.16\00:13:52.63 So, I think it's a great lesson, it's a great start for us. 00:13:52.66\00:13:55.46 It's really brought a lot of understanding to my mind 00:13:55.50\00:13:58.23 to see the connection between Ham... the curse 00:13:58.27\00:14:01.54 and the Ten Commandments of God. 00:14:01.60\00:14:02.97 Ryan: Nice. '" 00:27:14.66\00:27:18.23 And it goes on to say... "bake them thoroughly. 00:27:18.30\00:27:21.40 They had brick for stone, 00:27:21.47\00:27:23.27 and that they had asphalt for mortar. 00:27:23.30\00:27:25.57 And they said, 'Come, let us build ourselves a city, 00:27:25.61\00:27:29.24 and a tower whose top is in the heavens; 00:27:29.31\00:27:31.25 let us make a name for ourselves, 00:27:31.28\00:27:33.95 lest we be scattered abroad, 00:27:33.98\00:27:35.72 over the face of the whole earth. '" 00:27:35.78\00:27:37.85 So, you see kind of this collective almost... can I say, 00:27:37.92\00:27:41.19 One-World-Government-type System 00:27:41.22\00:27:43.22 trying to come together and saying, "You know what?" 00:27:43.26\00:27:45.49 and a lot of what has previously happened 00:27:45.53\00:27:47.63 which we just came out of last week... 00:27:47.66\00:27:49.70 talking about the flood... 00:27:49.73\00:27:51.07 now, in light of, you know, God destroying the earth, 00:27:51.10\00:27:53.57 you have these unrighteous men and women 00:27:53.60\00:27:55.70 who are coming together and saying, 00:27:55.74\00:27:57.07 "You know what? we're going to shake the fist to God 00:27:57.11\00:27:58.74 and say, 'Well, we have a plan for You. '" 00:27:58.77\00:28:00.34 They didn't trust in God's Word, 00:28:00.38\00:28:02.04 they didn't trust in the promise that God said, 00:28:02.08\00:28:04.05 "I'm not going to destroy the world again with a flood... " 00:28:04.08\00:28:06.48 now, they're going to basically spit in God's face and say, 00:28:06.51\00:28:08.88 "We're going to make a name for ourselves. " 00:28:08.92\00:28:10.92 The lesson brings this out and you can see kind of a... 00:28:10.99\00:28:13.76 a contrasting from again the plan and the Word of God 00:28:13.79\00:28:16.49 that we find in Genesis 1 and 2, versus what's happening here, 00:28:16.52\00:28:19.96 it says, the lesson brings out... it says, 00:28:20.00\00:28:21.60 "In fact, their real intention 00:28:21.63\00:28:23.37 is to take the place of God Himself, the Creator. 00:28:23.43\00:28:25.80 Significantly, the description of the people's intentions 00:28:25.83\00:28:28.50 and actions echo God's intentions and actions 00:28:28.57\00:28:31.61 in the Creation account... " 00:28:31.64\00:28:32.97 and we see that very clearly, 00:28:33.01\00:28:34.34 for instance, in Genesis 11, which I just read, 00:28:34.38\00:28:36.44 verses 3 and 4, it says, "They said... they said... " 00:28:36.48\00:28:39.61 but we echo that or pair that with Genesis chapter 1 verse 6 00:28:39.65\00:28:42.98 where it says, "And God said, 'Let there be... '" right? 00:28:43.02\00:28:45.95 God is speaking... 00:28:45.99\00:28:47.32 they're saying, "And we are going to speak... " 00:28:47.36\00:28:49.22 also, right there in Genesis 11 verses 3 and 4 it says, 00:28:49.26\00:28:52.59 "Let us make... 00:28:52.63\00:28:54.10 let us make... " right? 00:28:54.13\00:28:56.03 "Let us make a city... let us make for ourselves... " 00:28:56.06\00:28:57.93 and so, also, Genesis 1:26, it says, 00:28:57.97\00:28:59.97 "Then God said, 'Let Us make in Our image... '" 00:29:00.00\00:29:03.67 so, you can see... you can see the plan of the enemy here, 00:29:03.71\00:29:06.98 this contrasting... contradicting plan 00:29:07.01\00:29:09.78 that is taking place here 00:29:09.81\00:29:11.15 and, of course, again, another one here, 00:29:11.18\00:29:14.05 "Let us make a name for ourselves... " 00:29:14.08\00:29:16.89 of course, the lesson brings out that this is an expression 00:29:16.92\00:29:19.55 that is exclusively used for God. 00:29:19.59\00:29:22.22 We see it there in Isaiah chapter 63 verses 12 through 14, 00:29:22.29\00:29:25.89 listen to what Isaiah 63 verses 12 through 14 says, 00:29:25.93\00:29:28.90 and this is... again... Isaiah speaking 00:29:28.93\00:29:30.90 on the glory of the Lord... he's shouting God's glories 00:29:30.97\00:29:33.44 and he says here, "Who... " speaking of God, 00:29:33.47\00:29:35.80 "led them by the right hand of Moses, 00:29:35.87\00:29:37.74 with His glorious arm, dividing the water before them 00:29:37.77\00:29:40.81 to make for Himself an everlasting name... " 00:29:40.88\00:29:44.15 Panel: Hmmm... 00:29:44.18\00:29:45.51 Ryan: Verse 13, "Who led them through the deep, 00:29:45.55\00:29:47.05 as a horse in the wilderness, 00:29:47.08\00:29:48.78 that they might not stumble?" and then verse 14, 00:29:48.82\00:29:51.25 "As a beast goes down into the valley, 00:29:51.29\00:29:52.75 and the Spirit of the LORD causes him to rest, 00:29:52.79\00:29:55.09 so You lead Your people, to... " again, notice... 00:29:55.12\00:29:58.19 "to make Yourself a glorious name. " 00:29:58.23\00:30:01.06 So, notice what the people at the Tower of Babel are doing. 00:30:01.10\00:30:03.10 They are spitting in the face of God... 00:30:03.16\00:30:04.50 they're shaking their fist at God. 00:30:04.53\00:30:05.87 They're saying, "You know what? We don't trust You... 00:30:05.90\00:30:07.70 we don't believe in Your word... 00:30:07.77\00:30:09.24 we're going to do our own thing... 00:30:09.27\00:30:11.34 we're going to be our own God. " 00:30:11.37\00:30:13.38 That's basically what is happening here 00:30:13.41\00:30:15.94 and so, the builders basically wanted to replace God 00:30:15.98\00:30:19.18 and where did... where did they get this idea from? 00:30:19.21\00:30:21.25 Where do you think they got this idea from 00:30:21.28\00:30:22.62 that they could be little gods unto themselves 00:30:22.65\00:30:25.12 or they can raise themselves as high into the heavens 00:30:25.15\00:30:28.32 with this tower that they are going to build 00:30:28.36\00:30:29.96 to kind of be their own masters... their own leaders? 00:30:29.99\00:30:32.76 Of course, this is echoing straight from the heart 00:30:32.79\00:30:35.50 of the devil himself from Isaiah chapter 14 verses 13 and 14, 00:30:35.53\00:30:38.47 we've read it so many times and I'm going to read it because 00:30:38.50\00:30:41.44 we're studying the Bible, right. 00:30:41.47\00:30:43.04 Here is what it says, it says... this is Satan again, 00:30:43.07\00:30:45.47 Satan it says, "For you have said in your heart: 00:30:45.51\00:30:47.48 'I will ascend into the heaven... '" 00:30:47.51\00:30:49.68 isn't this what the Tower of Babel is happening? 00:30:49.71\00:30:51.75 They were ascending... they were building into heaven, 00:30:51.78\00:30:53.21 "I will ascend into the heaven, 00:30:53.25\00:30:54.62 I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; 00:30:54.65\00:30:57.05 I will also sit on the mount of the congregation 00:30:57.09\00:30:59.45 on the farthest sides of the north; 00:30:59.49\00:31:00.99 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds... " 00:31:01.02\00:31:03.73 that's what they wanted this... this Tower of Babel to be 00:31:03.76\00:31:06.19 or this Tower of Babel... and then it goes on to say, 00:31:06.23\00:31:07.93 "And I will be like the Most High. " 00:31:07.96\00:31:10.77 Let us... they said, "Let us make for ourselves" 00:31:10.80\00:31:14.07 again... "Let us make a name for ourselves. " 00:31:14.10\00:31:17.17 So, we see this even now during this time 00:31:17.21\00:31:20.21 that Society has degraded so much 00:31:20.24\00:31:23.18 that now God has to step in again. 00:31:23.21\00:31:25.31 Now, God's got to show up and say, 00:31:25.35\00:31:27.08 "Oh my goodness, here we go... 00:31:27.12\00:31:28.45 here we go with this again... " right, 00:31:28.48\00:31:29.88 and so... actually I'm going to read a couple of paragraphs here 00:31:29.95\00:31:32.09 that the lesson brings out, they word it so well, 00:31:32.15\00:31:33.96 I couldn't possibly word it any better. 00:31:33.99\00:31:35.92 So, they bring it out over here, it says, 00:31:35.96\00:31:37.83 "In short, the builders of Babel entertained the misplaced 00:31:37.86\00:31:41.36 ambition to replace God, the Creator. 00:31:41.43\00:31:43.77 The memory of the flood surely must have played a role 00:31:43.83\00:31:47.00 in their project. 00:31:47.04\00:31:48.37 They built a high tower in order to survive another flood, 00:31:48.40\00:31:51.64 or another to come, despite God's promise. 00:31:51.67\00:31:54.71 The memory of the flood has been preserved 00:31:54.74\00:31:56.81 in Babylonian tradition, 00:31:56.85\00:31:58.81 albeit distorted... " it goes on to say, 00:31:58.85\00:32:00.78 "in connection with the construction of the city 00:32:00.82\00:32:03.12 of Babel. " Or, of course, would be come to known 00:32:03.15\00:32:06.25 known to be: Babylon. 00:32:06.29\00:32:07.62 "This upward effort to reach heaven and usurp God 00:32:07.66\00:32:11.39 will, indeed, characterize the spirit of Babylon. 00:32:11.43\00:32:15.36 This is why the story of the Tower of Babel 00:32:15.40\00:32:17.73 is such an important motif and even in the book of Daniel" 00:32:17.77\00:32:22.04 now we remember... if you remember, 00:32:22.07\00:32:23.41 even in the very first chapter of Daniel 00:32:23.44\00:32:25.07 as Nebuchadnezzar has just besieged and taken control 00:32:25.11\00:32:27.94 of... of... of... of the captives there in Jerusalem, 00:32:27.98\00:32:30.81 he takes the utensils... the holy utensils of God 00:32:30.85\00:32:33.28 and if you read there in Daniel chapter 1 verse 2, 00:32:33.31\00:32:35.72 what does he bring them back to? 00:32:35.75\00:32:37.09 He brings them back to the Plain of Shinar... 00:32:37.12\00:32:39.85 same place that you see where this tower would have been built 00:32:39.89\00:32:42.89 and he goes on... the lesson goes on to bring about, it says, 00:32:42.92\00:32:46.03 even in Genesis 3 where it says that he built this... this 00:32:46.06\00:32:49.13 erected the statue in the Plain of Dura, 00:32:49.16\00:32:51.60 they're saying, "This is probably the same geographical 00:32:51.63\00:32:54.20 region of Shinar where they erected this 90-foot image 00:32:54.24\00:32:58.11 and now what does the King of Babylon say? 00:32:58.14\00:32:59.64 "Worship him... " instead of God, right? 00:32:59.67\00:33:02.04 "This is your god... worship him. " 00:33:02.08\00:33:04.11 And so, again, this is just... 00:33:04.15\00:33:05.61 again, this... this whole rebellion... 00:33:05.65\00:33:07.78 rebellious recalcitrant spirit on behalf of the people 00:33:07.82\00:33:11.65 towards God and what's interesting 00:33:11.69\00:33:13.76 is this has prophetic implications. 00:33:13.79\00:33:15.12 We've seen this all the way down through history, 00:33:15.16\00:33:17.09 what we know as history 00:33:17.13\00:33:18.46 but even recent history 00:33:18.49\00:33:19.83 when you get into Daniel chapter 2 00:33:19.86\00:33:21.46 where obviously you see the... the metal man, 00:33:21.50\00:33:23.53 you know, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, 00:33:23.57\00:33:25.53 divided Rome... of course we know it became Western Europe, 00:33:25.57\00:33:28.70 it's interesting that in the history there Daniel chapter 2 00:33:28.74\00:33:31.87 verses 41 through 43, 00:33:31.91\00:33:33.24 it goes on to talk about the feet and the toes that are 00:33:33.27\00:33:36.01 partly of potter's clay and partly of iron, 00:33:36.04\00:33:38.08 when you get to verse 43 00:33:38.11\00:33:39.88 speaking of the kings of the earth during that time 00:33:39.91\00:33:42.58 in divided Rome State... 00:33:42.62\00:33:44.25 Western Europe State, it says, 00:33:44.29\00:33:45.89 "As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, 00:33:45.92\00:33:47.89 they will mingle with the seed of men 00:33:47.92\00:33:49.76 but they will not adhere to one another 00:33:49.79\00:33:51.59 just as iron does not mix with clay. " 00:33:51.63\00:33:53.36 The Bible predicted that there would be powerful men 00:33:53.40\00:33:55.96 that would come about in these latter days that would say, 00:33:56.00\00:33:58.83 "You know what? We're going to take what God says... 00:33:58.87\00:34:00.24 is going to remain divided 00:34:00.27\00:34:01.87 and we're going to bring it all together. 00:34:01.90\00:34:03.57 God confounded the languages... 00:34:03.61\00:34:05.24 He confused the languages... He scattered them abroad... 00:34:05.27\00:34:07.41 we're going to bring it together. 00:34:07.44\00:34:08.78 We are going to have one world, one government, one language. " 00:34:08.81\00:34:10.68 In fact, it's interesting just to mention a few of these 00:34:10.71\00:34:12.85 names here, Charles the Fifth, 00:34:12.91\00:34:14.25 Charlemagne... go look these up in history, 00:34:14.28\00:34:16.22 Charlemagne... Napoleon Bonaparte... 00:34:16.25\00:34:18.35 all of these men are examples of what they tried to do. 00:34:18.39\00:34:21.16 Even in Napoleon's journal, get this, 00:34:21.19\00:34:22.72 this is what he said in his journal. 00:34:22.76\00:34:24.26 He says, "There will be one Europe. 00:34:24.33\00:34:25.79 There will be one currency. 00:34:25.83\00:34:27.46 There will be one language. 00:34:27.50\00:34:29.00 There will be one government over all of Europe... " 00:34:29.03\00:34:31.87 and, of course, by the time of his defeat at Waterloo, 00:34:31.90\00:34:34.70 you know what he had to admit, 00:34:34.77\00:34:36.10 this is what... these are his words... 00:34:36.14\00:34:37.47 and he said... he actually said this, 00:34:37.51\00:34:38.84 "God Almighty, it's too much for me. " 00:34:38.87\00:34:40.21 Kenny: Yes, that's a fact. 00:34:40.24\00:34:41.58 Ryan: "God Almighty... " he had to admit it. 00:34:41.61\00:34:42.94 "God Almighty, it's too much for me. " 00:34:42.98\00:34:44.31 Even Hitler... Adolf Hitler... 00:34:44.35\00:34:45.68 he said, "There will be a one people... 00:34:45.71\00:34:47.88 one empire... one leader... " 00:34:47.92\00:34:49.58 and even on March 1941, 00:34:49.62\00:34:51.82 he recorded these words to his people, 00:34:51.85\00:34:53.92 he said, "To my people, we do not need anything from God, 00:34:53.96\00:34:56.22 we do not ask Him for anything 00:34:56.26\00:34:57.73 except that He may let us alone. " 00:34:57.76\00:34:59.36 Panel: Oooooh... Ryan: What arrogance! 00:34:59.39\00:35:00.73 "We want to fight our own war with our own guns without God... 00:35:00.76\00:35:03.80 we want to gain our victory without the help of God. " 00:35:03.83\00:35:06.17 This is... this is Tower of Babel... 00:35:06.20\00:35:07.54 this is Tower of Babel language. 00:35:07.57\00:35:08.90 My Friends, I've run out of time 00:35:08.94\00:35:10.27 but I want to leave you with these last final words, 00:35:10.31\00:35:11.67 "Do... " in these last days, may we not have this rebellious, 00:35:11.71\00:35:14.98 recalcitrant spirit... 00:35:15.01\00:35:16.34 may we open up our hearts to the Lord and say, 00:35:16.38\00:35:18.21 "Lord, come in to me... " 00:35:18.25\00:35:19.65 and follow the word of the Lord today 00:35:19.71\00:35:21.25 and not of the will of Babylon. 00:35:21.28\00:35:23.08 Panel: Thank you... ooooh... amen. 00:35:23.12\00:35:24.89 Shelley: That was good for the rest of my time. 00:35:24.92\00:35:28.19 My name is Shelley Quinn and the lesson I have 00:35:28.22\00:35:31.46 for Wednesday is: Let Us Go Down. 00:35:31.49\00:35:33.66 We'll begin with Genesis 11 and verse 5, 00:35:33.70\00:35:37.40 I'm going to read through it 00:35:37.43\00:35:38.93 and then we're going to take it apart. 00:35:38.97\00:35:40.30 Genesis 11 verse 5, 00:35:40.34\00:35:41.97 "But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower 00:35:42.00\00:35:45.67 in which the sons of men had built. 00:35:45.71\00:35:48.94 And the Lord said, 'Indeed the people are one 00:35:48.98\00:35:52.68 and they all have one language, 00:35:52.71\00:35:54.98 and this... if this is what they begin to do; 00:35:55.02\00:35:59.09 now nothing they propose to do 00:35:59.12\00:36:01.36 will be withheld from them. 00:36:01.39\00:36:03.56 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, 00:36:03.59\00:36:09.70 that they may not understand one another's speech. " 00:36:09.73\00:36:15.80 So, let's take this apart. 00:36:15.84\00:36:17.77 What about this event required God to come down 00:36:17.81\00:36:23.55 and motivated this divine reaction? 00:36:23.58\00:36:26.25 Let's look at verse 5 again. 00:36:26.28\00:36:27.85 "The Lord came down to see the city and the tower 00:36:27.88\00:36:33.89 which the sons of men had built. " 00:36:33.96\00:36:35.89 You know, the irony is, God sees everything... 00:36:35.92\00:36:40.03 God knew everything that was... 00:36:40.06\00:36:42.06 He was already aware of this 00:36:42.10\00:36:44.07 but He came down, quote unquote "to see" 00:36:44.10\00:36:47.57 in Psalm 139 verse 7 through 12, 00:36:47.60\00:36:52.84 David writes this, 00:36:52.87\00:36:54.78 "Where can I go from Your Spirit? 00:36:54.81\00:36:57.11 Where can I flee from Your presence? 00:36:57.15\00:36:59.08 If I ascend into heaven, You are there; 00:36:59.11\00:37:01.02 if I make my bed in hell... " which is the grave... 00:37:01.05\00:37:03.85 "behold, You are there. 00:37:03.89\00:37:05.85 if I take the wings of the morning, 00:37:05.89\00:37:08.89 and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 00:37:08.92\00:37:10.96 even there Your hand shall lead me, 00:37:10.99\00:37:13.60 and Your right hand shall hold me. 00:37:13.63\00:37:15.36 If I say, 'Surely the darkness shall fall on me,' 00:37:15.40\00:37:18.63 even the night shall be light about me; 00:37:18.67\00:37:21.40 indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, 00:37:21.44\00:37:26.07 but the night shines as the day; 00:37:26.11\00:37:31.38 the darkness and the light are both alike to You. " 00:37:31.41\00:37:37.35 So, when it says... God came down to see... 00:37:37.39\00:37:42.26 first of all, I'll remind you, this is the 11th chapter... 00:37:42.29\00:37:45.56 there's 2,000 years of history 00:37:45.59\00:37:48.40 condensed into these first 11 chapters of Genesis. 00:37:48.43\00:37:52.53 But God coming down to "see" 00:37:52.57\00:37:56.67 is just explaining God's involvement with humanity. 00:37:56.71\00:38:04.41 It's emphasizing this. 00:38:04.45\00:38:06.21 The city of Babylon... Babilu was the "Gate of God" 00:38:06.28\00:38:12.42 is what that meant. 00:38:12.45\00:38:13.79 It was a city of pagan worship... 00:38:13.82\00:38:16.83 a city of sin and superstition 00:38:16.86\00:38:20.00 and carnal pleasures of material riches 00:38:20.03\00:38:23.06 and persecution. 00:38:23.10\00:38:24.93 Now, the Tower of Babel or the Tower of Babel... 00:38:24.97\00:38:30.17 I've heard it pronounced both ways 00:38:30.21\00:38:32.34 is linked with the Hebrew word: Balayu... 00:38:32.37\00:38:37.58 and you know what that word means? 00:38:37.61\00:38:39.25 "To confuse. " 00:38:39.28\00:38:40.78 So, you know, I'm trying to picture... 00:38:40.82\00:38:43.49 we don't know how long... because this is... 00:38:43.52\00:38:45.95 this is 2,000 years of history, 00:38:45.99\00:38:48.79 I don't know how long they were building on this, 00:38:48.82\00:38:51.23 but we do know during that time 00:38:51.29\00:38:53.93 as they're building this tower, 00:38:53.96\00:38:56.53 one of their building constructions was a ziggurat... 00:38:56.56\00:38:59.90 that they built these different levels 00:38:59.93\00:39:02.60 and they went up in a pyramid 00:39:02.64\00:39:04.31 and they did this as a temple for their pagan gods 00:39:04.34\00:39:10.95 and they would have rising terraces 00:39:10.98\00:39:14.08 and... and the whole idea is that these ziggurat temples 00:39:14.12\00:39:19.89 were considered to be an entrance to heaven. 00:39:19.92\00:39:25.23 So, the construction of this tower 00:39:25.26\00:39:29.10 as you so rightfully said... 00:39:29.16\00:39:30.77 what they were doing was dethroning God. 00:39:30.80\00:39:34.30 Panel: That's right. 00:39:34.34\00:39:35.67 Shelley: What they were doing was establishing paganism 00:39:35.70\00:39:39.14 as a system of worship. 00:39:39.17\00:39:40.51 So, in verse 6 the Lord says, 00:39:40.54\00:39:43.45 "Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, 00:39:43.48\00:39:49.15 and this is what they begin to do; 00:39:49.18\00:39:53.42 now nothing that they propose to do 00:39:53.46\00:39:57.66 will be withheld from them. " 00:39:57.69\00:39:59.03 Let me tell you something, God isn't looking down 00:39:59.06\00:40:02.60 and being concerned about competition for authority. 00:40:02.63\00:40:06.20 Panel: That's right... yeah... sure... 00:40:06.23\00:40:07.57 Shelley: Right? Panel: That's right. 00:40:07.60\00:40:08.94 I mean, He had full authority 00:40:08.97\00:40:10.31 but He knew that if He left this people unchecked... 00:40:10.34\00:40:14.81 if He didn't do something to stop them, 00:40:14.84\00:40:18.41 the deeds of their evil... the deeds of their defiance 00:40:18.48\00:40:23.59 would do nothing but multiply and bring multiple miseries 00:40:23.62\00:40:28.32 on the earth. 00:40:28.36\00:40:29.92 So, the people were rebelling against their Creator 00:40:29.96\00:40:33.96 and He's about to reverse their evil human plot. 00:40:34.00\00:40:37.97 Verse 7, Genesis 11:7, 00:40:38.00\00:40:41.00 "Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, 00:40:41.04\00:40:45.74 that they may not understand one another's speech. " 00:40:45.77\00:40:50.45 You know what's interesting to me? 00:40:50.48\00:40:52.61 Even in God's destruction of their evil plan, 00:40:52.65\00:40:57.62 He creates... He creates all these new languages... 00:40:57.65\00:41:02.12 it's a creative destruction, 00:41:02.16\00:41:03.56 you know, God can't do anything that's not creative, can He? 00:41:03.59\00:41:07.13 but it's interesting that He said, 00:41:07.16\00:41:09.56 "Let us go down... " 00:41:09.60\00:41:11.17 it's reminiscent of the very beginning 00:41:11.23\00:41:14.04 of the account of creation, Genesis 1:26... 00:41:14.07\00:41:18.41 God said, "Let us make man in Our image, 00:41:18.47\00:41:22.78 according to Our likeness... I've got to be more saved 00:49:48.38\00:49:50.35 than those who don't keep the feasts. " 00:49:50.39\00:49:51.85 So, I get locked into all... 00:49:51.89\00:49:53.82 even the Evangelical world... 00:49:53.86\00:49:55.72 looking for the re-establishment of the sacrificial system, 00:49:55.76\00:49:58.79 and they got the nerve to say that we honor the Sabbath 00:49:58.83\00:50:01.83 and we are saved by works... 00:50:01.86\00:50:03.20 is the only commandment that says, 00:50:03.23\00:50:04.80 "Thou shalt not do any works. " 00:50:04.83\00:50:06.74 So, watch out for religion... 00:50:06.77\00:50:08.84 right, watch out for religions 00:50:08.87\00:50:10.87 that base your salvation on a work. 00:50:10.91\00:50:12.87 Sabbath is not a work... it's a rest from work. 00:50:12.91\00:50:16.21 Panel: Amen... that's right. 00:50:16.24\00:50:17.61 Lomacang: So, let's go look at Genesis 1 verse 28, 00:50:17.65\00:50:19.51 "God blessed them, and God said to them... " 00:50:19.55\00:50:22.28 to Adam and Eve... 00:50:22.32\00:50:23.65 "Be fruitful and multiply; 00:50:23.69\00:50:25.09 fill the earth and subdue it; 00:50:25.15\00:50:26.65 have dominion over the fish of... 00:50:26.69\00:50:28.82 over the fish of the sea, 00:50:28.86\00:50:30.49 over the birds of the air, 00:50:30.53\00:50:32.09 and over every living thing that moves on the earth. " 00:50:32.13\00:50:34.53 He said that to Adam and Eve... 00:50:34.56\00:50:36.56 He said that to Noah... 00:50:36.60\00:50:38.27 He kept saying, "Guys, come on, 00:50:38.30\00:50:39.83 you've got to fill the earth... " 00:50:39.87\00:50:41.50 and along comes the Tower of Babel 00:50:41.54\00:50:43.30 confuses humanity and God says, "Okay, 00:50:43.34\00:50:45.07 since they don't want to do it, 00:50:45.11\00:50:46.44 I'll scatter man throughout the earth. " 00:50:46.47\00:50:48.41 So, the design of God was to be fruitful and multiply 00:50:48.44\00:50:51.05 and fill the earth. 00:50:51.08\00:50:52.68 The design of Satan was, "You stay right there... 00:50:52.71\00:50:54.62 ignore God... " 00:50:54.65\00:50:55.98 in every avenue where God gives a directive, 00:50:56.02\00:50:58.39 Satan follows it up with another directive 00:50:58.42\00:51:00.72 that is completely opposite to the directive of God. 00:51:00.76\00:51:03.79 That's why, Genesis 11 verse 4, 00:51:03.83\00:51:06.19 let's look at the other aspect of why this exile 00:51:06.26\00:51:09.93 needed to be a redemptive act. 00:51:09.96\00:51:12.10 Look at Genesis 11 verse 4, 00:51:12.13\00:51:14.27 "And they said, 00:51:14.30\00:51:16.20 'Come, let us build ourselves a city. '" 00:51:16.24\00:51:18.14 Abraham said, 00:51:18.17\00:51:19.84 "I'm looking for a city whose builder and maker is God.
