Go to Jesus outside the camp. 00:02:55.74\00:02:57.67 Would you begin with prayer for us? 00:02:57.71\00:02:59.04 Absolutely. Let's pray. 00:02:59.07\00:03:00.41 Father in heaven, thank You so much for Jesus 00:03:00.44\00:03:02.81 and thank You that He was willing 00:03:02.84\00:03:04.35 to be outside the camp. 00:03:04.38\00:03:06.51 We're asking now that You'll guide our hearts 00:03:06.55\00:03:08.62 and the hearts of those who are viewing 00:03:08.65\00:03:10.65 that You will send Your Spirit to teach us, 00:03:10.69\00:03:13.25 to instruct us as to what it means 00:03:13.29\00:03:15.82 to love one another as You've loved us. 00:03:15.86\00:03:19.09 We ask this in Jesus' name. 00:03:19.13\00:03:20.76 Amen. Amen. 00:03:20.80\00:03:23.16 You know love songwriters many years ago I remember the song. 00:03:23.20\00:03:27.24 I think it was Dionne Warwick sang it. 00:03:27.27\00:03:28.60 She sang what the world needs now is love sweet love. 00:03:28.64\00:03:31.51 It's the only thing that there's just too little love. 00:03:31.54\00:03:35.31 Well, that is in harmony with the Word of God. 00:03:35.34\00:03:38.41 Do you know the mark of a Christian 00:03:38.45\00:03:39.78 is his or her ability to love in all circumstances 00:03:39.81\00:03:43.45 under every situation. 00:03:43.49\00:03:45.19 And the world has tried its best to break 00:03:45.22\00:03:48.32 our evidentiary connection 00:03:48.36\00:03:53.29 with Christ. 00:03:53.33\00:03:54.66 And that is loving at all times, 00:03:54.70\00:03:56.80 loving in the moments when we don't feel like loving, 00:03:56.83\00:03:59.87 loving at moments when our lives are being sapped 00:03:59.90\00:04:02.37 in the energies of allegiance to God is being challenged. 00:04:02.40\00:04:06.34 But we'll find out today that it is true 00:04:06.37\00:04:10.18 that through all the moments of life through Christ, 00:04:10.21\00:04:14.08 the love that He has given to us can continue to shine. 00:04:14.12\00:04:17.55 The memory text is a very short one. 00:04:17.59\00:04:20.39 Hebrews 13:1 and I want to tell you, 00:04:20.42\00:04:23.36 let's see if you could say with me, 00:04:23.39\00:04:24.73 Let brotherly love continue. 00:04:24.76\00:04:26.43 Let's try that together. Let brotherly love continue. 00:04:26.46\00:04:30.40 Can't forget that. 00:04:30.43\00:04:31.77 That should be a slogan on a hat 00:04:31.80\00:04:33.13 or on the back of a shirt, let brotherly love continue. 00:04:33.17\00:04:37.87 I heard a saying that I included in my lesson today, 00:04:37.91\00:04:42.38 Mahatma Gandhi. 00:04:42.41\00:04:43.75 I'm familiar with his story. 00:04:43.78\00:04:45.85 Growing up I read one of the books 00:04:45.88\00:04:47.82 that talked about his journey 00:04:47.85\00:04:49.18 as to why he accepted the religion that he did 00:04:49.22\00:04:51.59 and became so well-known for his stance religiously. 00:04:51.62\00:04:54.86 But he said I spent some time in the home of Christians 00:04:54.89\00:04:58.69 and I did not like the way they loved each other, 00:04:58.73\00:05:00.90 they showed such hostility 00:05:00.93\00:05:02.66 and I determined I don't want to be a part of that religion 00:05:02.70\00:05:05.37 and he turned his back on Christ. 00:05:05.40\00:05:07.44 But in his choice of his religious walk in life, 00:05:07.47\00:05:12.14 he said, 00:05:12.17\00:05:13.51 whenever you are confronted with an opponent, 00:05:13.54\00:05:16.54 conquer him with love. 00:05:16.58\00:05:18.91 I thought, how profound because it lines up 00:05:18.95\00:05:21.48 with the very principle in scriptures. 00:05:21.52\00:05:23.59 Let brotherly love continue. 00:05:23.62\00:05:26.62 Hebrews 13, 00:05:26.65\00:05:28.29 presents the apostles concluding admonition, 00:05:28.32\00:05:31.69 and we've gone through the better sacrifices, 00:05:31.73\00:05:34.53 we've gone through ordinances, 00:05:34.56\00:05:36.20 we've gone through the blood sacrifices, 00:05:36.23\00:05:38.23 we've talked about the temple and as all the services, 00:05:38.27\00:05:41.10 the Priesthood of Christ, 00:05:41.14\00:05:42.47 now he's, he's putting all that together 00:05:42.50\00:05:45.61 in the beautiful package, saying, simply, 00:05:45.64\00:05:48.58 Jesus was willing to do all of that, 00:05:48.61\00:05:50.95 because of His love for us 00:05:50.98\00:05:52.51 and we should follow His example, 00:05:52.55\00:05:54.38 and be willing to do all that it takes, 00:05:54.42\00:05:56.38 the greatest sacrifice we could make. 00:05:56.42\00:05:58.25 As Christ made the greatest sacrifice for us 00:05:58.29\00:06:00.56 should be because we love our brethren. 00:06:00.59\00:06:02.82 We find, the author talks about this in the lesson he says, 00:06:02.86\00:06:06.86 the author does not conceive of the audience... 00:06:06.90\00:06:10.10 Let me read that again. 00:06:10.13\00:06:12.93 The author does not conceive of the audience 00:06:12.97\00:06:15.77 only as a group of individuals who works on their salvation, 00:06:15.80\00:06:20.31 and a one-to-one relationship with Jesus, 00:06:20.34\00:06:22.68 but as a family or household saved together. 00:06:22.71\00:06:26.75 And he says Paul has characterized 00:06:26.78\00:06:28.62 the work of Jesus for us as brotherly love. 00:06:28.65\00:06:33.56 He was not ashamed to call them brothers, 00:06:33.59\00:06:36.62 he calls us brothers, 00:06:36.66\00:06:38.26 thus believers should do for one another 00:06:38.29\00:06:41.33 what Jesus did for them. 00:06:41.36\00:06:43.63 Now I didn't number the takeaways, Jill, 00:06:43.67\00:06:45.03 but I have a number of them. 00:06:45.07\00:06:46.67 And I like to begin with Hebrews 13:3. 00:06:46.70\00:06:49.90 And I'd like to title this, Remember the Mistreated. 00:06:49.94\00:06:54.74 There are many people today that are mistreated. 00:06:54.78\00:06:56.78 I was at an academy once I was doing worship for them, 00:06:56.81\00:06:59.88 a week of prayer for the weekend revival. 00:06:59.91\00:07:02.65 And when I walked into the room, 00:07:02.68\00:07:05.75 I was trying to figure out how to get the attention 00:07:05.79\00:07:07.56 of these young people. 00:07:07.59\00:07:09.02 And I made the statement, I said, 00:07:09.06\00:07:10.39 I'm going to only say this once. 00:07:10.43\00:07:12.19 I'm going to give you my phone number 00:07:12.23\00:07:13.56 and the first person to text me 00:07:13.60\00:07:14.93 is going to get the money in my right pocket. 00:07:14.96\00:07:17.33 I said it once 00:07:17.37\00:07:18.70 and all the students hurriedly took out their phones 00:07:18.73\00:07:20.97 and started texting as quickly as they could. 00:07:21.00\00:07:23.41 And I said at the end of our weekend, 00:07:23.44\00:07:24.77 I will reveal who the winner is. 00:07:24.81\00:07:26.91 What was so amazing, the guy who won was a young man 00:07:26.94\00:07:30.58 who on campus was mistreated. 00:07:30.61\00:07:33.38 He wasn't involved, the boys picked on him. 00:07:33.42\00:07:36.45 And when I mentioned his name, 00:07:36.48\00:07:38.25 the young ladies just screamed and they said it's 00:07:38.29\00:07:41.39 and they mentioned his name. 00:07:41.42\00:07:42.76 And I said why did you guys respond that way? 00:07:42.79\00:07:44.59 They said, he's the guy that's always left out, 00:07:44.63\00:07:47.40 always overlooked, always picked on, 00:07:47.43\00:07:49.73 always mistreated, 00:07:49.76\00:07:51.10 and I was so excited to bring him up. 00:07:51.13\00:07:52.83 I said I didn't tell you how much is in my pocket 00:07:52.87\00:07:55.47 but whatever was there on Friday, 00:07:55.50\00:07:56.84 I'll give it to you today. 00:07:56.87\00:07:58.21 And everybody just stood up and clapped 00:07:58.24\00:07:59.84 because he was the one that was mistreated. 00:07:59.87\00:08:02.01 The Bible says in Hebrews 13:3 00:08:02.04\00:08:06.25 these words about remembering the mistreated. 00:08:06.28\00:08:09.68 Remember the prisoners has have chained with them. 00:08:09.72\00:08:14.12 Those who are mistreated, 00:08:14.16\00:08:15.89 since you yourself are in the body also. 00:08:15.92\00:08:19.63 What is he saying? 00:08:19.66\00:08:21.00 He says, you know, at the flip of a coin 00:08:21.03\00:08:23.16 your life can go from miraculous to miserable. 00:08:23.20\00:08:27.57 Your life can switch on a dime. 00:08:27.60\00:08:30.47 You can wonder how did I get here? 00:08:30.51\00:08:31.94 I went to visit one of our, many years ago, 00:08:31.97\00:08:34.64 one of the church members here actually, 00:08:34.68\00:08:36.81 no longer living here is in South America now. 00:08:36.85\00:08:39.45 And I went to visit him in the local county jail 00:08:39.48\00:08:41.68 and I said, "What happened?" 00:08:41.72\00:08:43.85 He said, "I just lost it. I just blew it. 00:08:43.89\00:08:47.69 I'm guilty. 00:08:47.72\00:08:49.79 I just blew it." 00:08:49.82\00:08:51.16 And because of, 00:08:51.19\00:08:52.53 because it was his first offense, 00:08:52.56\00:08:54.00 they let him go three days later. 00:08:54.03\00:08:55.90 And I was so thankful for that. 00:08:55.93\00:08:57.27 He was so excited, so energetic, 00:08:57.30\00:08:58.73 but somebody stepped on this property. 00:08:58.77\00:09:01.07 And his reaction to them was just so off-color, 00:09:01.10\00:09:04.24 that they accused him of something 00:09:04.27\00:09:06.54 that got him arrested, but he was in jail 00:09:06.57\00:09:10.41 and I thought if I were behind the bars, 00:09:10.45\00:09:12.58 what would I want my pastor to say to me now, 00:09:12.61\00:09:15.25 good for you. 00:09:15.28\00:09:16.62 I told you, you shouldn't do that. 00:09:16.65\00:09:17.99 No, or what I say, you know, the Lord is with you. 00:09:18.02\00:09:20.69 It'll be okay. 00:09:20.72\00:09:22.06 And I prayed with him and praise the Lord, 00:09:22.09\00:09:23.53 two days later, he was let free, 00:09:23.56\00:09:25.19 and they didn't even press any further charges. 00:09:25.23\00:09:27.50 But we have to love others 00:09:27.53\00:09:28.86 as though we are also prisoners in chains. 00:09:28.90\00:09:31.63 Hebrews 10:24-25. 00:09:31.67\00:09:33.97 Let's look at this one. 00:09:34.00\00:09:35.60 Also remember the overlooked. 00:09:35.64\00:09:40.58 Verse 24, 00:09:40.61\00:09:41.94 "And let us consider one another 00:09:41.98\00:09:43.31 in order to stir up love and good works, 00:09:43.35\00:09:45.91 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, 00:09:45.95\00:09:49.28 as is the manner of some, 00:09:49.32\00:09:50.92 but exhorting one another and so much more 00:09:50.95\00:09:53.76 as you see the Day approaching." 00:09:53.79\00:09:55.89 What I say we have fellowship lunch, 00:09:55.92\00:09:57.59 people call it potluck, I said, 00:09:57.63\00:09:59.29 "It's first about fellowship, then it's about food." 00:09:59.33\00:10:02.56 If you focus on the food alone, you miss the fellowship. 00:10:02.60\00:10:05.40 Sometimes it's in the fellowship 00:10:05.43\00:10:07.64 that we get to understand 00:10:07.67\00:10:09.00 the struggles in people's lives. 00:10:09.04\00:10:10.37 I know some of you have struggles 00:10:10.41\00:10:12.07 and what people want more than anything else 00:10:12.11\00:10:13.98 is not that people condemn them in the time of their struggle, 00:10:14.01\00:10:17.15 but that they could simply have a listening ear. 00:10:17.18\00:10:19.48 Sometimes you don't have to give any advice. 00:10:19.51\00:10:22.28 You don't have to give any counsel, 00:10:22.32\00:10:23.65 sometimes all people want to know 00:10:23.69\00:10:25.72 is while I'm being overlooked in life, 00:10:25.75\00:10:27.86 there's somebody who's concerned 00:10:27.89\00:10:29.22 about the way I feel, or what I'm going through. 00:10:29.26\00:10:31.66 We also find the third one in Hebrews 12:15-17, 00:10:31.69\00:10:36.06 guard against the roots of bitterness springing up in you. 00:10:36.10\00:10:39.43 Hebrews 12:15, "Looking carefully, 00:10:39.47\00:10:43.20 lest anyone fall short of the grace of God, 00:10:43.24\00:10:46.74 lest any root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, 00:10:46.78\00:10:51.71 and by this many become defiled." 00:10:51.75\00:10:54.02 Verse 16, "Lest there be any fornicator 00:10:54.05\00:10:57.95 or profane person like Esau, 00:10:57.99\00:11:00.86 who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. 00:11:00.89\00:11:04.33 Verse 17, "For you know that afterward 00:11:04.36\00:11:07.76 when he wanted to inherit the blessing, 00:11:07.80\00:11:10.20 he was rejected, 00:11:10.23\00:11:11.83 for he found no place for repentance, 00:11:11.87\00:11:14.44 though he sought it diligently with tears." 00:11:14.47\00:11:17.71 He forfeited something for selfish reasons 00:11:17.74\00:11:20.58 and then became bitter. 00:11:20.61\00:11:22.14 There a lot of people that are bitter. 00:11:22.18\00:11:23.51 I talk to people on the phone sometimes, 00:11:23.55\00:11:25.25 and they find every reason to just not like the church 00:11:25.28\00:11:29.12 and I say to them, 00:11:29.15\00:11:30.49 "You are whitewashing the entire church 00:11:30.52\00:11:32.15 and its membership and all the pastors 00:11:32.19\00:11:33.69 with that statement. 00:11:33.72\00:11:35.16 You know, brother, sister, 00:11:35.19\00:11:36.52 I think you need to re-examine your heart, 00:11:36.56\00:11:38.26 because I've been around the world, 00:11:38.29\00:11:39.89 and that church can't be as bad as you say it is." 00:11:39.93\00:11:43.06 And so, sometimes people have experiences 00:11:43.10\00:11:44.83 that throw them into that root of bitterness, 00:11:44.87\00:11:47.20 and they begin to see everything the very same way. 00:11:47.24\00:11:49.30 So be careful when you are faced with adversity, 00:11:49.34\00:11:52.51 don't allow the root of bitterness. 00:11:52.54\00:11:54.98 As I've said, confront the issues of your life, 00:11:55.01\00:11:57.78 lest they become the issues of your mind 00:11:57.81\00:11:59.88 and then reveal themselves through the words 00:11:59.91\00:12:01.95 of your mouth. 00:12:01.98\00:12:03.72 The next one Paul encourages us to do is be hospitable. 00:12:03.75\00:12:07.12 Hebrews 13:2, be hospitable. 00:12:07.16\00:12:10.73 It says, "Do not forget to entertain strangers, 00:12:10.76\00:12:14.03 for by so doing some have unwittingly 00:12:14.06\00:12:16.87 entertained angels." 00:12:16.90\00:12:18.23 I may not cover all mine, but I've got to tell the story. 00:12:18.27\00:12:20.90 Once my wife and I and her cousin 00:12:20.94\00:12:22.27 were driving down from Maryland to Florida, 00:12:22.30\00:12:24.87 and it was snowing, heavily snowing, 00:12:24.91\00:12:27.41 and we were on route 95, going down to Florida, 00:12:27.44\00:12:29.88 and we saw a guy on the side of the road, it was snowing. 00:12:29.91\00:12:32.01 And he had an overcoat, he didn't even have on a hat. 00:12:32.05\00:12:34.15 He had his neck covered. 00:12:34.18\00:12:35.52 And we passed him all I think about 60 miles an hour. 00:12:35.55\00:12:38.52 And we just saw the snow blowing. 00:12:38.55\00:12:41.22 I said stop, stop the car and it was not my car, 00:12:41.26\00:12:45.13 it was my wife's cousin's car. 00:12:45.16\00:12:47.16 She said, "What are you going to do?" 00:12:47.20\00:12:48.53 I said, "Let's give that guy a ride." 00:12:48.56\00:12:50.67 She said, "He's wet. 00:12:50.70\00:12:52.27 He's covered in snow." 00:12:52.30\00:12:53.70 "That's okay, put a blanket on the seat. 00:12:53.74\00:12:55.07 Let's give him a ride." And we invited him in the car. 00:12:55.10\00:12:57.61 He sat in the backseat. It was three of us. 00:12:57.64\00:13:00.58 He didn't smell the best, but he wasn't bad. 00:13:00.61\00:13:03.61 It's just the sweat of just being out there in the snow 00:13:03.65\00:13:05.88 and the wetness of the rain. 00:13:05.91\00:13:07.78 And we asked him, "Where are you going?" 00:13:07.82\00:13:09.35 And we took him south of the border, 00:13:09.38\00:13:11.35 took them at a rest area, gave him some money, 00:13:11.39\00:13:13.49 and let him out of the car. 00:13:13.52\00:13:15.02 I don't know if that wasn't an angel. 00:13:15.06\00:13:16.69 I have no idea. 00:13:16.73\00:13:18.16 But when he got on the car, we had some food. 00:13:18.19\00:13:19.93 We gave him something to eat something to drink 00:13:19.96\00:13:21.93 and he leaned his head on the window 00:13:21.96\00:13:23.53 and he fell asleep and was no problem to us 00:13:23.57\00:13:25.80 for the next three or 400 miles. 00:13:25.83\00:13:28.60 Don't be unmindful. 00:13:28.64\00:13:32.34 Be mindful that sometimes the Lord may come to you 00:13:32.37\00:13:35.01 in the person of a stranger. 00:13:35.04\00:13:36.61 Remember this as much as you done it to the least 00:13:36.64\00:13:38.61 of these you've done it to Me. 00:13:38.65\00:13:40.38 Be hospitable, but also because I'm married. 00:13:40.42\00:13:42.58 This one is important. 00:13:42.62\00:13:43.95 Hebrews 13:4, honor your marriage. 00:13:43.99\00:13:46.76 Marriage is honorable among all and the bed undefiled, 00:13:46.79\00:13:50.36 but fornicators and adulterers God will judge. 00:13:50.39\00:13:54.06 Honor your marriage. 00:13:54.10\00:13:55.76 It is the highest example of your relationship 00:13:55.80\00:13:58.63 between the Lord and you and your spouse and you. 00:13:58.67\00:14:02.20 And lastly, avoid covetousness. 00:14:02.24\00:14:05.14 Hebrews 13:5-6, 00:14:05.17\00:14:07.51 let your conduct be without covetousness, 00:14:07.54\00:14:10.55 be content with such things as you have 00:14:10.58\00:14:14.12 for He himself has said 00:14:14.15\00:14:15.52 I will never leave you nor forsake you. 00:14:15.55\00:14:18.02 So we may boldly say the Lord is my helper. 00:14:18.05\00:14:21.32 I will not fear, what can man do to me. 00:14:21.36\00:14:25.26 Ryan? Amen. 00:14:25.29\00:14:26.63 Well, you got right in those are my lesson, 00:14:26.66\00:14:29.06 my brother, that you set it up very nicely, actually. 00:14:29.10\00:14:32.23 I'm Ryan Day, I have Monday's lesson 00:14:32.27\00:14:34.44 which is entitled Covetousness and Sexual Immorality. 00:14:34.47\00:14:38.47 And I just want to say 00:14:38.51\00:14:39.84 if there are any innocent ears laying around, 00:14:39.87\00:14:43.01 you might want to ask him to leave the room. 00:14:43.04\00:14:44.58 I don't know that's your choice, 00:14:44.61\00:14:45.95 but we're going to be talking about some sensitive things. 00:14:45.98\00:14:49.12 Hebrews 13:4-5, pastor just read them. 00:14:49.15\00:14:53.59 Let's go right there and read that again 00:14:53.62\00:14:55.06 because this sets us up nicely. 00:14:55.09\00:14:56.99 Hebrews 13:4-5, 00:14:57.03\00:14:59.23 "Marriage is honorable among all, 00:14:59.26\00:15:02.30 and the bed undefiled, 00:15:02.33\00:15:03.90 but fornicators and adulterers God will judge. 00:15:03.93\00:15:07.37 Let your conduct be without covetousness, 00:15:07.40\00:15:10.84 be content with such things as you have, 00:15:10.87\00:15:14.28 for he himself has said 00:15:14.31\00:15:15.64 I will never leave you nor forsake you." 00:15:15.68\00:15:19.61 We're also going to jump over 00:15:19.65\00:15:21.05 to Luke 16:10-18, 00:15:21.08\00:15:25.95 and also 1 Corinthians 5:1. 00:15:25.99\00:15:28.86 So, James, why don't you take 00:15:28.89\00:15:30.79 and read for us 1 Corinthians 5:1. 00:15:30.83\00:15:34.46 And, Jill, could you help us read Luke 16:10-18? 00:15:34.50\00:15:38.67 I got it. So Luke, yeah, go ahead and just read this. 00:15:38.70\00:15:40.64 Luke 16:10-18? Yes. 00:15:40.67\00:15:42.30 "He who is faithful in what is least 00:15:42.34\00:15:43.94 is faithful also in much, 00:15:43.97\00:15:45.67 he who is unjust in what is least 00:15:45.71\00:15:47.68 is unjust also in much. 00:15:47.71\00:15:49.94 Therefore if you have not been faithful 00:15:49.98\00:15:51.98 in the unrighteous mammon, 00:15:52.01\00:15:53.85 who will commit to your trust for true riches? 00:15:53.88\00:15:56.52 And if you have not been faithful 00:15:56.55\00:15:57.89 in what is another man's, 00:15:57.92\00:15:59.25 who will give you what is your own? 00:15:59.29\00:16:01.26 No servant can serve two masters, 00:16:01.29\00:16:04.09 for He will either hate the one and love the other, 00:16:04.13\00:16:06.76 or else he will be loyal to the one 00:16:06.80\00:16:08.46 and despise the other. 00:16:08.50\00:16:09.93 You cannot serve God and mammon. 00:16:09.96\00:16:13.17 Now the Pharisees who were lovers of money, 00:16:13.20\00:16:15.67 also heard all these things, and they derided Him. 00:16:15.70\00:16:18.64 And He said to them, 00:16:18.67\00:16:20.01 'You are those who justify yourselves before men, 00:16:20.04\00:16:22.88 but God knows your hearts. 00:16:22.91\00:16:24.85 For what is highly esteemed among men 00:16:24.88\00:16:27.08 is an abomination in the sight of God. 00:16:27.12\00:16:30.22 The law and the prophets were until John. 00:16:30.25\00:16:32.49 Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached, 00:16:32.52\00:16:34.89 and everyone is pressing into it. 00:16:34.92\00:16:37.33 And it is easier for heaven and earth 00:16:37.36\00:16:39.06 to pass away than for one title of the law to fail. 00:16:39.09\00:16:42.86 Whoever divorces his wife 00:16:42.90\00:16:44.77 and marries another commits adultery, 00:16:44.80\00:16:47.64 and whoever marries her 00:16:47.67\00:16:49.00 who is divorced from her husband commits adultery." 00:16:49.04\00:16:52.37 All right, so we're establishing a pattern here. 00:16:52.41\00:16:54.88 James, I gave you 1 Corinthians 5:1, 00:16:54.91\00:16:57.75 while he's about to read that, Pastor Dinzey, 00:16:57.78\00:16:59.65 would you have Colossians 3:5. 00:16:59.68\00:17:02.08 So, James, go ahead and read for us, 1 Corinthians 5:1. 00:17:02.12\00:17:05.19 All right, 1 Corinthians 5:1, 00:17:05.22\00:17:06.59 "It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, 00:17:06.62\00:17:10.36 and such fornication as is not so much as named 00:17:10.39\00:17:13.43 among the Gentiles, 00:17:13.46\00:17:14.80 that one should have his father's wife." 00:17:14.83\00:17:17.27 Okay, so you'll see among all of these passages 00:17:17.30\00:17:20.00 while Pastor Dinzey is finding Colossians 3:5, 00:17:20.04\00:17:23.34 I'm going to read Ephesians 5:3-5, 00:17:23.37\00:17:25.67 you start to see a pattern among these passages. 00:17:25.71\00:17:27.91 So Ephesians 5:3-5, it says, 00:17:27.94\00:17:30.58 "But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, 00:17:30.61\00:17:34.08 let it not even be named among you, 00:17:34.12\00:17:36.82 as it's fitting for saints, neither filthiness, 00:17:36.85\00:17:40.19 nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, 00:17:40.22\00:17:42.72 which are not fitting, but rather giving of things. 00:17:42.76\00:17:45.93 For this you know, that no fornicator, 00:17:45.96\00:17:48.30 unclean person nor covetous man, 00:17:48.33\00:17:51.33 who is an idolater has an inheritance 00:17:51.37\00:17:53.97 in the kingdom of Christ and God. 00:17:54.00\00:17:56.74 And we match that with Colossians 3:5 which says... 00:17:56.77\00:17:59.94 "Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: 00:17:59.97\00:18:03.95 fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, 00:18:03.98\00:18:07.75 and covetousness, which is idolatry." 00:18:07.78\00:18:10.05 Okay. 00:18:10.09\00:18:11.42 So, obviously, Paul warns the readers 00:18:11.45\00:18:13.52 against sexual immorality and greed, 00:18:13.56\00:18:16.69 because they were two grave threats 00:18:16.73\00:18:18.99 to brotherly love as pastor just brought up very clearly. 00:18:19.03\00:18:22.43 In fact, New Testament authors 00:18:22.46\00:18:24.27 and ancient moralists noted a connection between them. 00:18:24.30\00:18:27.87 And, of course, this falls under the banner. 00:18:27.90\00:18:29.90 If we go over to 1 John 2:16-17, 00:18:29.94\00:18:34.08 this falls under the banner of those three great sins 00:18:34.11\00:18:37.65 that affect us in life entirely. 00:18:37.68\00:18:39.41 All sins fall under these three categories. 00:18:39.45\00:18:41.98 So this is 1 John 2:16-17, "For all that is in the world, 00:18:42.02\00:18:46.05 the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes, 00:18:46.09\00:18:48.09 and the pride of life is not of the Father 00:18:48.12\00:18:50.06 but is of the world. 00:18:50.09\00:18:51.43 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it, 00:18:51.46\00:18:53.46 but he who does the will of God abides forever." 00:18:53.50\00:18:56.90 The lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, 00:18:56.93\00:18:59.03 and the pride of life. 00:18:59.07\00:19:00.44 These things fall under those categories, my friends. 00:19:00.47\00:19:03.14 Paul calls honor in marriage implied the avoidance 00:19:03.17\00:19:07.74 of anything that would belittle it, 00:19:07.78\00:19:09.68 the avoidance including abstaining both from violation 00:19:09.71\00:19:12.51 of the marriage oath and from unwarranted divorces. 00:19:12.55\00:19:15.82 The exhortation to keep the marriage bed 00:19:15.85\00:19:18.72 undefiled refers to avoiding the profanation 00:19:18.75\00:19:22.02 of marriage through sexual relationships 00:19:22.06\00:19:25.89 outside of marriage. 00:19:25.93\00:19:27.63 The expression fornicators refers to the New Testament 00:19:27.66\00:19:30.63 to every form of sexual immorality. 00:19:30.67\00:19:34.24 In addition, Greco-Roman societies this, of course, 00:19:34.27\00:19:37.27 in Paul's day was lacks in regard to sexual ethics. 00:19:37.31\00:19:40.74 A double standard was common. 00:19:40.78\00:19:42.24 This allowed men license in their sexual relationships 00:19:42.28\00:19:45.05 as long as they were discreet. 00:19:45.08\00:19:47.22 Paul warns, however, that God will judge adulterers. 00:19:47.25\00:19:50.29 Believers should not let social conventions 00:19:50.32\00:19:52.89 establish their own ethical standard. 00:19:52.92\00:19:55.76 You know, I was doing some research on this, 00:19:55.79\00:19:57.36 you know, we live in a world where it's an understatement 00:19:57.39\00:20:00.96 to say that our world has become over-sexualized. 00:20:01.00\00:20:03.97 I mean, it's flooding us at every corner, 00:20:04.00\00:20:07.70 but I was just looking at some statistics on this 00:20:07.74\00:20:09.87 and it's amazing how, 00:20:09.90\00:20:11.34 you know, you look from how societies mentality 00:20:11.37\00:20:14.61 on sexual orientation, 00:20:14.64\00:20:16.28 the practices of certain sexual practices, 00:20:16.31\00:20:19.28 how it's completely changed over the years. 00:20:19.31\00:20:21.48 In fact, I saw recent studies 00:20:21.52\00:20:24.29 and a recent statistical report, 65 to 70% 00:20:24.32\00:20:27.99 of Americans believe that it's not a moral issue 00:20:28.02\00:20:31.89 to have premarital sex. 00:20:31.93\00:20:34.03 This is a culmination of many studies 00:20:34.06\00:20:36.30 that have been done over the years. 00:20:36.33\00:20:37.93 But 65 to 70, that's the vast majority think that it's okay. 00:20:37.97\00:20:42.04 In fact, I found one that said it's okay. 00:20:42.07\00:20:44.27 Many of this group of the 65 to 70% 00:20:44.31\00:20:47.01 reported that it's no problem at all if a 16-year-old decides 00:20:47.04\00:20:50.85 that they want to have sex outside of marriage. 00:20:50.88\00:20:54.02 Recent polls show that more than 72% 00:20:54.05\00:20:56.62 of American citizens believe that the LGBTQ movement 00:20:56.65\00:20:59.75 is a great thing. 00:20:59.79\00:21:01.12 So America has changed. 00:21:01.16\00:21:02.49 We know the world, in general, has changed. 00:21:02.52\00:21:04.69 In regards to divorce again, 00:21:04.73\00:21:06.13 this idea of not committing adultery, 00:21:06.16\00:21:08.70 sexual immorality pertaining to the sanctity of marriage, 00:21:08.73\00:21:12.00 the Bible says God will not be mocked, 00:21:12.03\00:21:13.40 my friends, we have to uphold the sanctity 00:21:13.44\00:21:15.80 and the sacredness of marriage that God instituted. 00:21:15.84\00:21:18.24 Over more than 115 studies done over recent years, 00:21:18.27\00:21:22.61 all the way up to the year 2020, almost 50%. 00:21:22.64\00:21:26.55 This is what the statistics show, 00:21:26.58\00:21:27.92 almost 50% of marriages in the United States 00:21:27.95\00:21:30.45 will end in divorce or separation. 00:21:30.49\00:21:32.99 Researchers estimate that 41% of all first marriages 00:21:33.02\00:21:36.69 end in divorce. 00:21:36.73\00:21:38.06 60% of second marriages end in divorce. 00:21:38.09\00:21:40.90 73% of all third marriages end in divorce. 00:21:40.93\00:21:44.77 Every 13 seconds there was one divorce in America. 00:21:44.80\00:21:48.84 That equates to 277 divorces per hour, 00:21:48.87\00:21:51.94 6646 divorces per day 00:21:51.97\00:21:54.98 46,523 divorces per week, 00:21:55.01\00:21:58.41 and 2,419,196 divorces per year. 00:21:58.45\00:22:02.82 That means get this, interesting statistic. 00:22:02.85\00:22:05.75 There are non-divorces in the time 00:22:05.79\00:22:07.26 that it takes for a couple to recite their wedding vows, 00:22:07.29\00:22:09.66 which is approximately two minutes. 00:22:09.69\00:22:11.56 Talk about sexual immorality, 00:22:11.59\00:22:12.93 covetousness let's get on that 00:22:12.96\00:22:14.50 because we have little time here. 00:22:14.53\00:22:16.43 You know, the blessing brings out 00:22:16.46\00:22:17.80 that the love of money was one of the main categories 00:22:17.83\00:22:19.87 of vices in the Greco-Roman world. 00:22:19.90\00:22:22.37 In fact, another letter Paul referred to, of course, 00:22:22.40\00:22:25.04 this is referencing 1 Timothy 6:10, 00:22:25.07\00:22:27.28 where he talks about how the love 00:22:27.31\00:22:29.01 of the desire for money is the root of all evil. 00:22:29.04\00:22:32.25 Of course, the defense against the vices and attitude 00:22:32.28\00:22:35.05 that Paul encourages in several epistles 00:22:35.08\00:22:37.65 verse they should he says be content 00:22:37.69\00:22:39.95 with the things that they had. 00:22:39.99\00:22:41.32 Of course, we know Philippians 4:11-12, 00:22:41.36\00:22:44.33 which says very clearly, 00:22:44.36\00:22:45.69 "Not that I speak in regard to need, 00:22:45.73\00:22:47.73 for I have learned that whatever I am, to be content. 00:22:47.76\00:22:53.03 I know how to be abased, he says, 00:22:53.07\00:22:55.00 and I know how to abound. 00:22:55.04\00:22:56.44 Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full 00:22:56.47\00:22:59.11 and to be hungry, 00:22:59.14\00:23:00.48 both to abound and to suffer need." 00:23:00.51\00:23:01.98 My friends, we live in a world of more, more, more and more, 00:23:02.01\00:23:04.38 give me more, give me more. 00:23:04.41\00:23:05.85 In fact, I've heard people say all the time. 00:23:05.88\00:23:07.62 In fact, I used to say this, I used to ignorantly say, 00:23:07.65\00:23:10.85 well, if only I had a million dollars, 00:23:10.89\00:23:12.85 or someone says only I had a million dollars. 00:23:12.89\00:23:15.59 Well, there's a reason why you don't have 00:23:15.62\00:23:16.96 that million dollars. 00:23:16.99\00:23:18.33 Because the Bible says that, you know, 00:23:18.36\00:23:19.69 there are some people, 00:23:19.73\00:23:21.06 some people can handle that amount of money, 00:23:21.10\00:23:22.43 and other people can't. 00:23:22.46\00:23:23.80 But the idea is, you know what a lot of people say 00:23:23.83\00:23:25.17 if I only had a million dollars, 00:23:25.20\00:23:26.53 it would change my life. 00:23:26.57\00:23:27.90 Oh, how much greater I would live. 00:23:27.94\00:23:29.27 But the truth is, we live in a world of more, 00:23:29.30\00:23:30.64 and more, and more, and more of greed. 00:23:30.67\00:23:32.07 The idea is, you know, if I had a million dollars, 00:23:32.11\00:23:34.14 then you would want $2 million. 00:23:34.18\00:23:35.51 And if you had $2 million, you'd want $4 million. 00:23:35.54\00:23:37.55 This is the kind of world that we live in today, my friends. 00:23:37.58\00:23:40.35 Then we have also, it's one thing you see this in the world 00:23:40.38\00:23:42.95 we expect this type of mentality in the world. 00:23:42.98\00:23:45.42 But then we have these people out 00:23:45.45\00:23:46.79 here preaching a prosperity gospel, 00:23:46.82\00:23:48.39 saying that, you know, Jesus wants us to be rich. 00:23:48.42\00:23:51.83 We have to be reminded in Matthew 19:23-24, 00:23:51.86\00:23:54.36 Jesus said to the disciples, "Assuredly, 00:23:54.40\00:23:56.30 I say to you that it is hard for a rich man 00:23:56.33\00:23:58.80 to enter the kingdom of heaven. 00:23:58.83\00:24:00.30 And I say again to you, He says, 00:24:00.34\00:24:01.67 it is easier for a camel to go through the eye 00:24:01.70\00:24:03.10 of a needle than a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." 00:24:03.14\00:24:06.37 My friends, we should be content 00:24:06.41\00:24:07.74 with what we have, addressing in this lesson, 00:24:07.78\00:24:10.65 the covetousness, and the sexual immorality, 00:24:10.68\00:24:13.31 you know, at the end of the day, 00:24:13.35\00:24:14.68 especially with this covetousness, 00:24:14.72\00:24:16.05 I just want to end on this text, 00:24:16.08\00:24:17.42 Matthew 6:21-33, 00:24:17.45\00:24:19.22 "For wherever your treasure is Jesus says there your heart 00:24:19.25\00:24:21.66 will be also, but seek first the kingdom 00:24:21.69\00:24:25.43 of God and His righteousness." 00:24:25.46\00:24:27.53 And really this can fall under anything. 00:24:27.56\00:24:29.36 "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness 00:24:29.40\00:24:31.67 and all these things shall be added to you." 00:24:31.70\00:24:34.30 We serve a God that does not take away, 00:24:34.34\00:24:36.00 He wants to bless you abundantly. 00:24:36.04\00:24:37.71 Let's seek Him and allow Him to add these things to you 00:24:37.74\00:24:40.94 as He sees fit. 00:24:40.98\00:24:42.31 Wow, thank you, Ryan. 00:24:42.34\00:24:43.68 Wow, that was an unpacking if anything else. 00:24:43.71\00:24:47.32 Don't go away, we have three more days, 00:24:47.35\00:24:49.35 we'll be back in just a moment. 00:24:49.38\00:24:50.85 Ever wish you could Brotherly Love Continue. 00:25:27.42\00:25:30.76 Pastor Dinzey, now it's your opportunity 00:25:30.79\00:25:32.53 to share with what... 00:25:32.56\00:25:33.90 Share what the Lord has revealed to you. 00:25:33.93\00:25:35.60 Well, yes, we will move to Tuesday. 00:25:35.63\00:25:37.73 Remember Your Leaders is the lesson. 00:25:37.77\00:25:40.74 And the lesson takes the scriptures 00:25:40.77\00:25:44.04 from Hebrews 13:7-17. 00:25:44.07\00:25:48.38 And here you have exhortation to respect 00:25:48.41\00:25:50.95 and obey the leaders of the congregation. 00:25:50.98\00:25:53.42 And it begins with an invitation 00:25:53.45\00:25:54.92 to remember those leaders of the past 00:25:54.95\00:25:58.19 who spoke the Word of God to them. 00:25:58.22\00:26:01.02 And then it closes with obey the leaders in the present. 00:26:01.06\00:26:05.06 Now let's go to Hebrews 13:7, 00:26:05.09\00:26:07.83 "Remember those who rule over you 00:26:07.86\00:26:10.00 who have spoken the Word of God to you 00:26:10.03\00:26:13.40 whose faith follow considering the outcome of their conduct." 00:26:13.44\00:26:18.07 And so here we have a message for the people 00:26:18.11\00:26:21.64 that are reading the Book of Hebrews and for us, 00:26:21.68\00:26:24.05 and it's used as in the past tense 00:26:24.08\00:26:27.32 indicating the things they have done 00:26:27.35\00:26:29.82 and the example we have seen in them. 00:26:29.85\00:26:32.25 Now, I'd like to say something concerning that, 00:26:32.29\00:26:35.02 because this may include leaders who have passed away. 00:26:35.06\00:26:39.89 And this is not in the sense of remembering them 00:26:39.93\00:26:42.63 to idolatry or praying to them, 00:26:42.66\00:26:45.47 as in some religious groups they do, 00:26:45.50\00:26:49.37 this is remembering their example 00:26:49.40\00:26:51.87 and imitate their example, as Paul said, 00:26:51.91\00:26:55.04 "Be imitators of me as I am of Christ." 00:26:55.08\00:26:58.51 So this is the context of what we have here, 00:26:58.55\00:27:03.39 considering the outcome of their conduct. 00:27:03.42\00:27:05.62 Now, here, we have an interesting aspect 00:27:05.65\00:27:09.52 brought out in the lesson, it says, for Paul, 00:27:09.56\00:27:11.59 the greatest act of remembrance and praise is emulation. 00:27:11.63\00:27:14.80 And this is why I brought out this scripture that Paul says 00:27:14.83\00:27:17.43 be imitators of me as I am of Christ. 00:27:17.47\00:27:21.64 I received a call at one time from a man that was saying, 00:27:21.67\00:27:26.27 you know, I have to be thankful for my son 00:27:26.31\00:27:30.28 because I have been telling him for years, 00:27:30.31\00:27:32.41 son, do not smoke as I do 00:27:32.45\00:27:36.55 and finally the son grew to the age 00:27:36.58\00:27:40.89 where he said, dad, now you've been telling me 00:27:40.92\00:27:43.06 for years not to smoke, but you keep doing it, 00:27:43.09\00:27:45.69 you know, you need to stop that 00:27:45.73\00:27:47.46 because I don't want you to die. 00:27:47.50\00:27:49.26 He said, you know, I think God spoke to me 00:27:49.30\00:27:52.47 through my son. 00:27:52.50\00:27:53.84 And so, when we look at an example 00:27:53.87\00:27:56.74 of somebody else, we need to consider it 00:27:56.77\00:27:58.51 and compare to what the Scripture say. 00:27:58.54\00:28:01.11 And if somebody is telling you not to do something, 00:28:01.14\00:28:03.35 and they are doing it, it is not a good example 00:28:03.38\00:28:06.21 and we are not to emulate what they do. 00:28:06.25\00:28:10.19 We are to emulate things 00:28:10.22\00:28:11.65 as we see people do them in Christ. 00:28:11.69\00:28:14.82 Now, it's interesting here that the context also includes 00:28:14.86\00:28:20.50 these leaders and Paul emphasizes, 00:28:20.53\00:28:24.23 looking unto Jesus in Hebrews Chapter 12, 00:28:24.27\00:28:26.70 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. 00:28:26.74\00:28:30.04 So it's in the context of Jesus Christ 00:28:30.07\00:28:32.84 as these people follow Jesus, that we are to remember them. 00:28:32.87\00:28:36.91 In Hebrews 13:8, Bible says, 00:28:36.95\00:28:40.38 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, 00:28:40.42\00:28:43.39 today, and forever. 00:28:43.42\00:28:44.75 He does not change, 00:28:44.79\00:28:46.32 His example is the one we should follow. 00:28:46.35\00:28:49.29 Now notice, verse 9, 00:28:49.32\00:28:50.66 "Do not be carried about with various 00:28:50.69\00:28:54.10 and strange doctrines. 00:28:54.13\00:28:56.36 For it is good that the heart be established by grace, 00:28:56.40\00:29:00.24 not with foods which have not profited 00:29:00.27\00:29:02.10 those who have been occupied with them." 00:29:02.14\00:29:05.17 Now I want to say something here concerning a group 00:29:05.21\00:29:07.74 of people that were following a man that claimed 00:29:07.78\00:29:12.01 to be Jesus Christ in the flesh. 00:29:12.05\00:29:14.15 And for a period of time, 00:29:14.18\00:29:15.88 he claimed to be the Holy Spirit. 00:29:15.92\00:29:17.72 I'm talking about Jose Luis Miranda, 00:29:17.75\00:29:20.56 which was based in Florida, 00:29:20.59\00:29:22.26 who claimed that he was Christ 00:29:22.29\00:29:24.09 and went into bars and was smoking cigars in bars. 00:29:24.13\00:29:28.00 And as the guy was interviewing him, 00:29:28.03\00:29:29.80 he asked him, 00:29:29.83\00:29:31.47 "You know, I'm finding it strange 00:29:31.50\00:29:33.34 that you claim to be Jesus 00:29:33.37\00:29:34.70 and you're sitting here in a bar, 00:29:34.74\00:29:36.24 smoking a cigar and drinking." 00:29:36.27\00:29:38.64 And he says, "I don't see Jesus doing that." 00:29:38.67\00:29:40.88 "Oh, yes, He would." 00:29:40.91\00:29:42.24 Well, this man is gravely mistaken. 00:29:42.28\00:29:43.98 And he was setting a bad example 00:29:44.01\00:29:46.31 and I'm glad they showed that part of this individual 00:29:46.35\00:29:49.32 because the contrast between this man and Jesus Christ 00:29:49.35\00:29:54.39 that we see presented in the scriptures 00:29:54.42\00:29:57.39 is incredibly different. 00:29:57.43\00:30:00.23 And so this man claimed not to die 00:30:00.26\00:30:02.90 and he died several years ago. 00:30:02.93\00:30:05.40 I want to say something else because He also claimed, 00:30:05.43\00:30:08.00 I'm talking about the part where says strange doctrines. 00:30:08.04\00:30:10.51 I had never heard anybody express saying 00:30:10.54\00:30:13.17 that sin does not exist. 00:30:13.21\00:30:16.51 There's no such thing as sin. 00:30:16.54\00:30:19.01 And, of course, the people... 00:30:19.05\00:30:21.22 I remember one young man that was present 00:30:21.25\00:30:23.69 that talked about in this group. 00:30:23.72\00:30:26.22 He called his father and he said, "Dad, 00:30:26.25\00:30:28.42 I am so happy." 00:30:28.46\00:30:30.33 "Oh, that's great son, why are you happy?" 00:30:30.36\00:30:32.53 "Because my pastor said that sin does not exist anymore." 00:30:32.56\00:30:37.30 And I was shocked when I was told this. 00:30:37.33\00:30:40.34 The Bible says that the wages of sin is death. 00:30:40.37\00:30:45.94 Do we make void the law through faith? 00:30:45.97\00:30:48.04 No, Paul says we establish the law. 00:30:48.08\00:30:51.31 So do not be carried about by strange doctrines, 00:30:51.35\00:30:55.15 we should be studying the scriptures 00:30:55.18\00:30:57.55 that we may show ourselves approved unto God, 00:30:57.59\00:31:00.42 rightly dividing the word of truth. 00:31:00.46\00:31:02.69 Let's go to verse 10. 00:31:02.72\00:31:04.06 Hebrews 13:10, 00:31:04.09\00:31:05.79 "We have an altar from which those who serve 00:31:05.83\00:31:08.10 the tabernacle have no right to eat." 00:31:08.13\00:31:11.27 It seems to be that during this time, 00:31:11.30\00:31:13.57 there were some sacrifices 00:31:13.60\00:31:15.20 being still offered in the temple, 00:31:15.24\00:31:17.67 even though Christ had already died on the cross, 00:31:17.71\00:31:21.24 and the veil was torn from top to bottom. 00:31:21.28\00:31:26.41 Those sacrifices were to cease with the death of Christ 00:31:26.45\00:31:29.75 because Christ fulfilled all of the sacrificial system. 00:31:29.78\00:31:34.12 But it says here we have an altar 00:31:34.16\00:31:37.66 from which those who served the tabernacle 00:31:37.69\00:31:39.76 have no right to eat for the bodies 00:31:39.79\00:31:42.50 of those animals whose blood is brought into the sanctuary 00:31:42.53\00:31:45.00 by the high priests for sin are burned outside the camp. 00:31:45.03\00:31:48.20 Therefore, Jesus also that He might sanctify the people 00:31:48.24\00:31:51.77 with His own blood suffered outside 00:31:51.81\00:31:54.51 the gate and so Jesus Christ, 00:31:54.54\00:31:57.28 our lamb, the Lamb of God, 00:31:57.31\00:32:00.05 which takes away the sin of the world. 00:32:00.08\00:32:01.95 This is the once for all sacrifice. 00:32:01.98\00:32:05.75 And I'm bringing you a quote from the Sabbath School lesson 00:32:05.79\00:32:09.22 from 1948 concerning this scripture. 00:32:09.26\00:32:12.56 He says, let the student note carefully 00:32:12.59\00:32:14.50 the contrast here presented. 00:32:14.53\00:32:16.36 When the blood was carried into the sanctuary, 00:32:16.40\00:32:18.30 the body was burned without the camp, 00:32:18.33\00:32:20.57 Christ, blood was carried into the sanctuary, 00:32:20.60\00:32:23.27 therefore He must suffer without the gate, 00:32:23.30\00:32:25.47 Hebrews 9:11-12. 00:32:25.51\00:32:27.18 In such cases, the flesh must not be eaten, 00:32:27.21\00:32:30.25 Hebrews 13:10. 00:32:30.28\00:32:32.25 Yet Christ says, take, eat, this is My body, 00:32:32.28\00:32:35.95 Matthew 26:26. 00:32:35.98\00:32:37.75 This is the altar which we have or which we may eat, 00:32:37.79\00:32:41.19 but which was forbidden. 00:32:41.22\00:32:43.19 Those of old we can partake of His body 00:32:43.22\00:32:45.73 and blood symbolically in the sacraments 00:32:45.76\00:32:48.03 of the Lord's Supper which they could not do, 00:32:48.06\00:32:50.50 which serve the tabernacle. 00:32:50.53\00:32:52.07 Very interesting thought brought out here 00:32:52.10\00:32:54.70 in this Sabbath School quarterly 00:32:54.74\00:32:56.10 from 1948 that covered the same Book of Hebrews. 00:32:56.14\00:33:00.24 Now we can move to Hebrews 13:13. 00:33:00.28\00:33:03.24 "Therefore let us go forth to Him, 00:33:03.28\00:33:05.01 outside the camp, bearing His reproach. 00:33:05.05\00:33:07.45 Notice verse 14, 00:33:07.48\00:33:08.82 "For here we have no continuing city, 00:33:08.85\00:33:13.46 but we seek the one to come." 00:33:13.49\00:33:15.46 The Christian is ever to keep before him 00:33:15.49\00:33:17.49 that this world is not our final home. 00:33:17.53\00:33:20.96 In its present condition, we have a New Jerusalem, 00:33:21.00\00:33:24.93 which will be the place for God's children 00:33:24.97\00:33:29.14 and the new earth. 00:33:29.17\00:33:30.51 Here we have no continuing city. 00:33:30.54\00:33:32.61 Be careful what roots you are putting down in this world. 00:33:32.64\00:33:36.44 Be careful because Satan is very deceptive 00:33:36.48\00:33:40.48 and will try to deceive you. 00:33:40.52\00:33:41.95 It could be with money, 00:33:41.98\00:33:43.32 it could be with an illicit relationship, 00:33:43.35\00:33:46.35 or appeals for some position, 00:33:46.39\00:33:50.49 be careful not to be carried away not with strange doctrines 00:33:50.53\00:33:54.13 or even the wickedness of this world. 00:33:54.16\00:33:56.56 Verse 15, "Therefore by Him, 00:33:56.60\00:33:58.03 let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, 00:33:58.07\00:34:03.30 that is, the fruit of our lips, 00:34:03.34\00:34:05.14 giving thanks to His name." 00:34:05.17\00:34:07.48 We have much 00:34:07.51\00:34:09.54 to be thankful for. 00:34:09.58\00:34:13.62 Notice this message from the book, 00:34:13.65\00:34:15.55 Christ's Object Lesson, 299. 00:34:15.58\00:34:18.45 I love what is written here. 00:34:18.49\00:34:20.39 And it says, To praise God in fullness 00:34:20.42\00:34:23.36 and sincerity of heart 00:34:23.39\00:34:25.43 is as much a duty as his prayer. 00:34:25.46\00:34:28.60 We are to show to the world 00:34:28.63\00:34:31.77 and to all the heavenly intelligences 00:34:31.80\00:34:34.40 that we appreciate the wonderful love 00:34:34.44\00:34:37.57 of God for fallen humanity 00:34:37.61\00:34:39.27 and that we are expecting larger and yet larger blessings 00:34:39.31\00:34:42.84 from His infinite fullness far more than we do. 00:34:42.88\00:34:47.55 We need to speak of the precious chapters 00:34:47.58\00:34:50.49 in our experience. 00:34:50.52\00:34:51.89 After a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit, 00:34:51.92\00:34:54.16 our joy in the Lord and our efficiency 00:34:54.19\00:34:56.22 in his service would be greatly increased 00:34:56.26\00:34:59.16 by recounting His goodness 00:34:59.19\00:35:01.13 and His wonderful works in behalf of His children." 00:35:01.16\00:35:04.73 Yes, we are to praise God far more than we do. 00:35:04.77\00:35:09.37 As you have already heard, 00:35:09.40\00:35:10.77 I encourage you to stop and consider 00:35:10.81\00:35:13.38 what great and wonderful things God has done for you today 00:35:13.41\00:35:16.75 and during this past week, and praise the Lord for it. 00:35:16.78\00:35:19.91 Thank the Lord for it. 00:35:19.95\00:35:21.52 Let's move quickly to verse 16 and 17. 00:35:21.55\00:35:23.82 "But do not forget to do good and to share, 00:35:23.85\00:35:26.62 for with such sacrifices God is well pleased." 00:35:26.65\00:35:29.99 These are the sacrifices that we are to offer now. 00:35:30.03\00:35:33.60 And in verse 17, it says, "Obey those who rule over you, 00:35:33.63\00:35:36.50 and be submissive, for they watch for your souls, 00:35:36.53\00:35:39.47 as those who must give account. 00:35:39.50\00:35:40.94 Let them do so with joy and not with grief, 00:35:40.97\00:35:43.51 for that would be unprofitable for you." 00:35:43.54\00:35:46.47 I encourage you to pray for the leaders of the church, 00:35:46.51\00:35:49.61 pray for your pastor, 00:35:49.64\00:35:50.98 his family because Satan wants to cause them 00:35:51.01\00:35:55.68 to fall and stumble. 00:35:55.72\00:35:57.89 This will be of great harm to the church. 00:35:57.92\00:36:00.09 So pray for your pastors, 00:36:00.12\00:36:02.02 and pray for the leaders of the church, 00:36:02.06\00:36:04.03 that God may be all in all. 00:36:04.06\00:36:06.76 Amen. Thank you so much, Pastor John, each one of you. 00:36:06.80\00:36:09.83 Can't believe we are at the end of our study on Hebrews. 00:36:09.86\00:36:13.50 My name is Jill Morikone, I have Wednesday's lesson, 00:36:13.54\00:36:16.37 which is Beware of Diverse and Strange Teachings. 00:36:16.40\00:36:21.11 I only have one verse in the section Hebrews 13. 00:36:21.14\00:36:23.75 Let's take a look at it now. 00:36:23.78\00:36:25.11 We're going to Hebrews 13:9. 00:36:25.15\00:36:27.75 Pastor Johnny already read it, 00:36:27.78\00:36:29.12 but we're going to read it again. 00:36:29.15\00:36:30.69 "Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. 00:36:30.72\00:36:34.46 For it is good that the heart be established by grace, 00:36:34.49\00:36:37.79 not with foods 00:36:37.83\00:36:39.39 which has not profited those who have been occupied 00:36:39.43\00:36:42.70 with them." 00:36:42.73\00:36:44.07 Let's talk first of all, what this verse is not about 00:36:44.10\00:36:46.23 and then we can talk what it is about. 00:36:46.27\00:36:48.94 The lesson brought out very clearly that this verse 00:36:48.97\00:36:51.17 is not a discussion of clean and unclean foods. 00:36:51.21\00:36:55.18 That is not the discussion of the Book of Hebrews. 00:36:55.21\00:36:58.61 Hebrews does address animal sacrifices. 00:36:58.65\00:37:01.58 We've covered this very clearly in previous lessons, 00:37:01.62\00:37:04.75 and the fact that they are no longer needed 00:37:04.79\00:37:07.66 because Jesus' sacrifice came once for all. 00:37:07.69\00:37:11.09 Jesus' sacrifice was better, 00:37:11.13\00:37:13.53 His blood spilled cleansed you and I from all sin. 00:37:13.56\00:37:18.40 Hebrews not only does address the fact 00:37:18.43\00:37:21.10 that animal sacrifices are no longer needed, 00:37:21.14\00:37:23.51 but it also addresses 00:37:23.54\00:37:25.41 the Levitical priestly mediation in the sanctuary, 00:37:25.44\00:37:29.41 and that that is no longer needed. 00:37:29.44\00:37:33.01 Jesus priestly mediation is far better. 00:37:33.05\00:37:36.82 He has an unchangeable priesthood. 00:37:36.85\00:37:39.45 Remember the Levitical priesthood, 00:37:39.49\00:37:40.89 they all passed away but Jesus has an unchanging priesthood. 00:37:40.92\00:37:44.99 He can save us to the uttermost. 00:37:45.03\00:37:47.76 So this discussion does not have anything to do with clean 00:37:47.80\00:37:50.90 and unclean meats. 00:37:50.93\00:37:52.73 What is it about though? 00:37:52.77\00:37:54.10 Let's read verse 9 again, 00:37:54.14\00:37:56.27 "Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. 00:37:56.30\00:38:01.08 For it is good that the heart be established by grace, 00:38:01.11\00:38:03.75 not with foods 00:38:03.78\00:38:05.11 which have not profited those who have been occupied 00:38:05.15\00:38:08.55 with them." 00:38:08.58\00:38:09.92 Do not be carried about is a present passive imperative 00:38:09.95\00:38:15.29 with a negative particle. 00:38:15.32\00:38:17.03 What in the world is that supposed to mean? 00:38:17.06\00:38:20.76 All it means, it usually means 00:38:20.80\00:38:23.40 to stop an act already in process. 00:38:23.43\00:38:26.77 So in other words, when Paul says, 00:38:26.80\00:38:28.67 do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines, 00:38:28.70\00:38:31.37 he's not warning of something that's going to be happening 00:38:31.41\00:38:34.14 in the future. 00:38:34.18\00:38:35.51 He's saying, it's already going on. 00:38:35.54\00:38:37.28 It is already in process, and what was in process? 00:38:37.31\00:38:42.55 It is good that the heart be established by grace, 00:38:42.58\00:38:46.52 not with foods which have not profited those. 00:38:46.55\00:38:50.49 Paul is criticizing the audience for partaking 00:38:50.53\00:38:53.80 of certain foods with the hope of obtaining grace 00:38:53.83\00:38:59.40 or merit through the food. 00:38:59.43\00:39:03.94 Have you met anybody like that? 00:39:03.97\00:39:06.14 Have you been somebody like that? 00:39:06.17\00:39:09.68 I have been. 00:39:09.71\00:39:11.05 My background, 00:39:11.08\00:39:12.71 I was raised in a Seventh-day Adventist Christian home, 00:39:12.75\00:39:15.38 but I didn't know Jesus growing up. 00:39:15.42\00:39:17.99 And all I knew was do's and don'ts, 00:39:18.02\00:39:22.39 rules and regulations, 00:39:22.42\00:39:26.36 partaking of certain foods or not, 00:39:26.39\00:39:29.20 dressing a certain way or not, 00:39:29.23\00:39:31.80 observing the Sabbath a certain way or not, 00:39:31.83\00:39:34.77 doing a certain thing or not, in order to obtain favor, 00:39:34.80\00:39:39.67 in order to make myself better, in order to have God accept me. 00:39:39.71\00:39:45.31 So I want to talk about the seven dangers of legalism. 00:39:45.35\00:39:50.55 I believe, 00:39:50.59\00:39:51.92 especially in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:39:51.95\00:39:54.49 we can have a danger of falling into the trap of legalism. 00:39:54.52\00:39:59.53 Turn with me to the Book of Luke. 00:39:59.56\00:40:01.00 We're going to Luke Chapter 11, these woes to the scribes 00:40:01.03\00:40:04.63 and Pharisees, the legalists of Jesus' day. 00:40:04.67\00:40:09.14 Danger number one, danger of legalism, 00:40:09.17\00:40:11.04 the danger of an unconverted heart. 00:40:11.07\00:40:15.04 Luke 11:37-40, 00:40:15.08\00:40:17.11 "And as He spoke, this is Jesus, 00:40:17.15\00:40:19.11 a certain Pharisee asked him to dine with him. 00:40:19.15\00:40:21.75 So He went in and sat down to eat. 00:40:21.78\00:40:23.82 When the Pharisee saw it, he marveled 00:40:23.85\00:40:26.55 that He had not first washed before dinner." 00:40:26.59\00:40:29.22 Now, this doesn't mean physical cleanliness. 00:40:29.26\00:40:31.39 This is that ceremonial washing. 00:40:31.43\00:40:34.26 "Then the Lord said to him, 00:40:34.30\00:40:35.83 'Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup 00:40:35.86\00:40:38.10 and dish clean, 00:40:38.13\00:40:39.47 but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness. 00:40:39.50\00:40:43.44 Foolish ones! 00:40:43.47\00:40:44.81 Did not He who made the outside make the inside also?'" 00:40:44.84\00:40:48.88 You see we can look clean, but be dirty inside. 00:40:48.91\00:40:52.45 We can look holy, but still be sinful. 00:40:52.48\00:40:56.08 We can appear to be righteous, 00:40:56.12\00:40:58.85 while our heart is still unconverted. 00:40:58.89\00:41:02.22 The danger of legalism is the danger 00:41:02.26\00:41:04.06 of an unconverted heart. 00:41:04.09\00:41:05.69 We don't even know the actual state of our heart. 00:41:05.73\00:41:09.80 I believe that Jesus had conflicts 00:41:09.83\00:41:11.40 with the legalists more than any other group 00:41:11.43\00:41:13.94 when He walked this earth. 00:41:13.97\00:41:15.40 You see, it wasn't the adulterers 00:41:15.44\00:41:17.14 that put Him on the cross. 00:41:17.17\00:41:18.51 It wasn't the murderers that put Him on the cross 00:41:18.54\00:41:20.74 or the thieves who put Him on the cross. 00:41:20.78\00:41:22.71 It was the legalists. 00:41:22.74\00:41:24.11 Danger number two, 00:41:24.15\00:41:25.48 the danger of false assurance of salvation. 00:41:25.51\00:41:30.05 We were in Luke 11. 00:41:30.09\00:41:31.42 Let's jump over to Luke Chapter 18, 00:41:31.45\00:41:33.66 this parable that Jesus told. 00:41:33.69\00:41:35.12 Luke 18:9, 00:41:35.16\00:41:37.03 "He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves 00:41:37.06\00:41:41.46 that they were righteous and despised others." 00:41:41.50\00:41:44.57 Do you trust in yourself that you're righteous? 00:41:44.60\00:41:46.50 Do you believe that if you do certain things, 00:41:46.53\00:41:50.21 you will be saved? 00:41:50.24\00:41:51.67 If I can only try harder, if I can only do more, 00:41:51.71\00:41:55.24 if I only outwardly comply in this way, 00:41:55.28\00:41:59.15 somehow I will be saved. 00:41:59.18\00:42:01.32 That's the danger of legalism, 00:42:01.35\00:42:02.78 the danger of false assurance of salvation 00:42:02.82\00:42:05.89 because we are saved by grace. 00:42:05.92\00:42:08.16 Through faith, the blood of Jesus is a gift. 00:42:08.19\00:42:11.19 Danger number three, the danger of pride. 00:42:11.23\00:42:13.93 We're still in Luke 18. 00:42:13.96\00:42:15.33 Jump down to verses 11 and 12. 00:42:15.36\00:42:18.43 "The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, 00:42:18.47\00:42:22.40 I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, 00:42:22.44\00:42:26.17 unjust, adulterers, even as this tax collector. 00:42:26.21\00:42:29.54 I fast twice a week, 00:42:29.58\00:42:31.11 I give tithes of all I possess." 00:42:31.15\00:42:34.08 The danger of pride of thinking ourselves superior 00:42:34.12\00:42:38.65 to other people. 00:42:38.69\00:42:40.99 When my sister and I were little 00:42:41.02\00:42:42.36 we would go to church and itty bitty, 00:42:42.39\00:42:45.36 all dressed up like swinging in the pews 00:42:45.39\00:42:48.26 little and people would walk into church and say 00:42:48.30\00:42:50.77 how are the Penny angels doing today? 00:42:50.80\00:42:52.77 Penny was our main name and we would look up 00:42:52.80\00:42:55.04 and smile very sweetly and say we're doing well, 00:42:55.07\00:42:57.77 Happy Sabbath. 00:42:57.81\00:42:59.14 And as soon as they turned away, 00:42:59.17\00:43:00.51 my sister would kick me in the shins under the pew 00:43:00.54\00:43:02.34 because you see, we really weren't doing well. 00:43:02.38\00:43:04.11 And we were mad at each other. 00:43:04.15\00:43:05.65 And we were having this private war 00:43:05.68\00:43:07.02 and we would continue 00:43:07.05\00:43:08.38 until the next person came and say 00:43:08.42\00:43:09.95 how are the Penny angels doing today? 00:43:09.98\00:43:12.15 And we would say, Happy Sabbath, 00:43:12.19\00:43:14.22 we're doing well. 00:43:14.26\00:43:15.59 And they would turn around 00:43:15.62\00:43:16.96 and then I would elbow her in the ribs 00:43:16.99\00:43:18.33 because I was still mad. 00:43:18.36\00:43:20.06 The danger of pride. 00:43:20.10\00:43:23.03 Reason number four, the danger of judging. 00:43:23.06\00:43:27.34 Remember John Chapter 8, we won't turn there 00:43:27.37\00:43:29.27 but the woman caught in adultery, had she sinned? 00:43:29.30\00:43:31.81 Absolutely. 00:43:31.84\00:43:33.17 Had the men who accused her of sin sinned? 00:43:33.21\00:43:37.51 Absolutely. 00:43:37.55\00:43:39.58 We judge other people. 00:43:39.61\00:43:42.35 We have little tolerance for people 00:43:42.38\00:43:43.75 who sin differently than we do. 00:43:43.79\00:43:48.09 Danger number five, the danger of hard-heartedness. 00:43:48.12\00:43:50.63 For this we're in Luke Chapter 10. 00:43:50.66\00:43:52.49 This is the story of the Good Samaritan. 00:43:52.53\00:43:55.23 Remember, he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. 00:43:55.26\00:43:57.80 We won't read this story but if you pick it up in verse 31. 00:43:57.83\00:44:02.50 We're in Luke 10:31, "Now by chance, 00:44:02.54\00:44:04.67 a certain priest came down that road, 00:44:04.71\00:44:06.78 and when he saw him," 00:44:06.81\00:44:08.44 keep in mind that word saw, 00:44:08.48\00:44:10.11 "he passed by on the other side. 00:44:10.15\00:44:12.11 Likewise, a Levite, 00:44:12.15\00:44:13.48 when he arrived at the place came and looked," 00:44:13.52\00:44:16.38 there's that word again, 00:44:16.42\00:44:17.75 "and passed by on the other side, 00:44:17.79\00:44:19.69 but a certain Samaritan as he journeyed 00:44:19.72\00:44:22.39 came where he was and when he saw him, 00:44:22.42\00:44:26.46 he had compassion." 00:44:26.49\00:44:27.86 In the Greek, all three of those words are the same, 00:44:27.90\00:44:31.93 but they had a vastly different response. 00:44:31.97\00:44:34.30 One looked and went the other way, 00:44:34.34\00:44:36.47 and one looked and passed by on the other side, 00:44:36.50\00:44:39.84 and one looked and had compassion, 00:44:39.87\00:44:42.54 the danger of hard-heartedness. 00:44:42.58\00:44:45.45 Danger number six, 00:44:45.48\00:44:46.82 the danger of hindering someone else's salvation. 00:44:46.85\00:44:49.98 For this, we're going back to Luke 11. 00:44:50.02\00:44:52.02 Luke 11:52, "Woe to you lawyers! 00:44:52.05\00:44:56.42 For you have taken away the key of knowledge 00:44:56.46\00:44:58.26 or that's the knowledge of Salvation. 00:44:58.29\00:45:01.20 You did not enter in yourselves, 00:45:01.23\00:45:03.16 and those who were entering in you hindered." 00:45:03.20\00:45:04.97 To me, this is the biggest danger of all. 00:45:05.00\00:45:07.84 If you're walking in legalism 00:45:07.87\00:45:11.17 that's gonna cost to your salvation, 00:45:11.21\00:45:13.44 you will not be in heaven if you walk in legalism, 00:45:13.48\00:45:16.01 but the danger is, you could cause someone else's salvation. 00:45:16.04\00:45:19.51 You could hinder someone else from experiencing joy in Jesus 00:45:19.55\00:45:24.59 and walking in assurance of salvation, 00:45:24.62\00:45:27.62 the danger of hindering someone else's salvation. 00:45:27.66\00:45:30.06 And finally, danger number seven, 00:45:30.09\00:45:31.86 the danger of inconsistency. 00:45:31.89\00:45:34.96 Luke 11:46, "And He said, 00:45:35.00\00:45:38.33 'Woe to you also, lawyers! 00:45:38.37\00:45:39.83 For you load men with burdens hard to bear, 00:45:39.87\00:45:42.97 and you yourselves do not touch the burdens 00:45:43.00\00:45:45.67 with one of your fingers.'" 00:45:45.71\00:45:47.94 It's a double standard, 00:45:47.98\00:45:49.31 do what I say if not what I do. 00:45:49.34\00:45:51.85 Now we can spend time looking at the dangers of legalism, 00:45:51.88\00:45:54.98 but all we have to do is look to Jesus, 00:45:55.02\00:45:56.95 the author and finisher of our faith, 00:45:56.99\00:45:59.65 know that we are saved by grace through faith, 00:45:59.69\00:46:01.79 know that He empowers us to walk in righteousness, 00:46:01.82\00:46:07.13 to live those righteous works by His grace and by His power. 00:46:07.16\00:46:11.07 Amen. Thank you. 00:46:11.10\00:46:12.43 That was powerful. Thanks for being vulnerable. 00:46:12.47\00:46:14.64 I know all of us can relate to that experience 00:46:14.67\00:46:16.67 to some degree or another. 00:46:16.71\00:46:18.21 My name is James Rafferty, and I have Thursday's lesson 00:46:18.24\00:46:20.81 and it's entitled Go To Jesus Outside the Camp, 00:46:20.84\00:46:24.51 and we're looking at Hebrews 13:10-14, 00:46:24.55\00:46:27.75 we're going to read these verses, 00:46:27.78\00:46:29.45 even though they've been read before. 00:46:29.48\00:46:31.15 "We have an altar, 00:46:31.19\00:46:32.52 whereof they have no right to eat 00:46:32.55\00:46:34.09 which serve the tabernacle." 00:46:34.12\00:46:35.46 Verse 11, "For the bodies of those beasts, 00:46:35.49\00:46:37.73 whose blood is brought into the sanctuary 00:46:37.76\00:46:39.89 by the high priests for sin, are burned without the camp. 00:46:39.93\00:46:43.83 Wherefore Jesus also, verse 12, 00:46:43.87\00:46:45.67 that He might sanctify the people with his own blood, 00:46:45.70\00:46:49.00 not ours, suffered without the gate. 00:46:49.04\00:46:51.91 Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, 00:46:51.94\00:46:55.38 bearing his reproach. 00:46:55.41\00:46:56.88 For here we have no continuing city, careful, 00:46:56.91\00:47:02.58 but we seek one to come." 00:47:02.62\00:47:05.25 Again, the lesson quarterly was excellent. 00:47:05.29\00:47:08.62 And so I'm going to read it, I'm going to have to read it. 00:47:08.66\00:47:10.89 It says that the place outside the gate was the most impure 00:47:10.93\00:47:14.33 of the whole camp. 00:47:14.36\00:47:15.70 The carcasses of the sacrificial animals 00:47:15.73\00:47:17.47 were burned there, Leviticus 4:12. 00:47:17.50\00:47:19.77 Lepers were also excluded from the camp, Leviticus 13:46. 00:47:19.80\00:47:24.14 And blasphemers and other criminals were executed there, 00:47:24.17\00:47:27.58 Leviticus 24:10-16 and 23. 00:47:27.61\00:47:31.38 1 Kings 21:13 and Acts 7:58, which is talking about Stephen. 00:47:31.41\00:47:36.35 Stephen was executed outside the camp, which we're gonna... 00:47:36.38\00:47:39.42 It's going to help us to make that transition. 00:47:39.45\00:47:41.79 These regulations presuppose that the presence 00:47:41.82\00:47:44.63 of God was within the camp. 00:47:44.66\00:47:46.49 Anything that was impure was cast outside 00:47:46.53\00:47:49.30 because God was unwilling to see any unclean 00:47:49.33\00:47:51.97 or indecent thing in it. 00:47:52.00\00:47:53.90 Numbers 5:3, Deuteronomy 23:14, 00:47:53.94\00:47:57.64 but Jesus suffered on the cross outside Jerusalem. 00:47:57.67\00:48:01.88 John 19:17-20, 00:48:01.91\00:48:03.71 this emphasizes the shame that was cast upon Him. 00:48:03.75\00:48:07.65 Hebrews 12:2, 00:48:07.68\00:48:09.32 looking unto Jesus, the author, and finisher 00:48:09.35\00:48:11.72 who despised the shame. 00:48:11.75\00:48:13.69 He was officially condemned 00:48:13.72\00:48:16.62 as one who had blasphemed the name 00:48:16.66\00:48:19.09 and therefore was repudiate by Israel, 00:48:19.13\00:48:21.66 and executed outside the wall. 00:48:21.70\00:48:23.43 He blasphemed the name of God, 00:48:23.47\00:48:24.80 according to the Jewish leaders, 00:48:24.83\00:48:26.37 Mark 14:63-64 00:48:26.40\00:48:28.87 and Leviticus 24:11-16. 00:48:28.90\00:48:31.27 Jesus was cast outside the camp as a shameful, 00:48:31.31\00:48:36.75 unclean, or indecent thing. 00:48:36.78\00:48:39.81 Again, Hebrews 12:2, 00:48:39.85\00:48:42.15 Paul, however, exhorts believers 00:48:42.18\00:48:45.49 to follow Jesus outside the gate, 00:48:45.52\00:48:49.09 enduring the shame that He endured, 00:48:49.12\00:48:52.53 Hebrews 12:2, Hebrews 13:13. 00:48:52.56\00:48:55.10 This was also the path Moses followed, 00:48:55.13\00:48:58.13 who chose to bear the approach of Christ 00:48:58.17\00:48:59.97 instead of the treasures of Egypt. 00:49:00.00\00:49:02.04 So we have a paradox here, right? 00:49:02.07\00:49:04.24 We have a paradox because Hebrews is suggesting 00:49:04.27\00:49:07.38 that God's presence is now outside the camp. 00:49:07.41\00:49:12.18 The action of following Jesus outside the camp 00:49:12.21\00:49:15.55 means not only bearing His reproach or shame, 00:49:15.58\00:49:18.65 but also going forth to Him. 00:49:18.69\00:49:21.69 The reason we go outside the camp 00:49:21.72\00:49:23.06 is not just to leave the camp. 00:49:23.09\00:49:24.43 The reason we go outside the camp is to find Jesus. 00:49:24.46\00:49:27.46 Hebrews 13:13. 00:49:27.50\00:49:29.66 Just as those Israelites who sought the Lord 00:49:29.70\00:49:31.63 went outside the camp in the desert 00:49:31.67\00:49:33.34 when Moses was removed, 00:49:33.37\00:49:35.14 when Moses removed God's tent from the camp 00:49:35.17\00:49:37.64 after the golden calf apostasy. 00:49:37.67\00:49:39.61 If you go back to Exodus, 00:49:39.64\00:49:40.98 you find that Moses is asked to actually separate himself 00:49:41.01\00:49:44.31 from that denomination that people 00:49:44.35\00:49:46.65 and God was going to make Moses, 00:49:46.68\00:49:48.38 another mighty nation, a new denomination of Moses. 00:49:48.42\00:49:51.32 No, no, no, he pled for them. 00:49:51.35\00:49:52.69 He said, no cast me out of your book 00:49:52.72\00:49:54.46 if you can't forgive them. 00:49:54.49\00:49:55.82 And so God said, okay, 00:49:55.86\00:49:57.53 I'm going to forgive them but you need to take 00:49:57.56\00:49:59.13 your 10 outside the camp and to seek God, 00:49:59.16\00:50:01.66 they had to go outside the camp. 00:50:01.70\00:50:03.90 This account suggests that the rejection of Jesus 00:50:03.93\00:50:06.03 by unbelievers, 00:50:06.07\00:50:07.87 also implied the rejection of God, 00:50:07.90\00:50:11.01 as Israel did in the golden calf apostasy. 00:50:11.04\00:50:14.58 Thus, and that's Exodus 32 and 33. 00:50:14.61\00:50:16.78 Thus, the path of suffering and shame is also the path to God. 00:50:16.81\00:50:22.28 This is huge when we think about it. 00:50:22.32\00:50:25.75 What does that mean for us who are followers of Jesus? 00:50:25.79\00:50:28.02 What does that mean for us? 00:50:28.06\00:50:29.46 When you look at the history of the Bible, 00:50:29.49\00:50:31.83 what you find is that God's people 00:50:31.86\00:50:34.56 have always been persecuted. 00:50:34.60\00:50:36.56 God's people have always been pushed to the edges. 00:50:36.60\00:50:39.43 You go back to Cain and Abel 00:50:39.47\00:50:40.80 and you follow the history of the church 00:50:40.84\00:50:42.30 but this became even more intense 00:50:42.34\00:50:44.37 after the crucifixion of Jesus. 00:50:44.41\00:50:46.27 Right. 00:50:46.31\00:50:47.64 We're told that in Revelation Chapter 12, 00:50:47.68\00:50:49.01 that, "Rejoice you heavens, 00:50:49.04\00:50:50.38 but woe to the inhabitants of the earth, 00:50:50.41\00:50:51.75 for the devil is come unto you having great wrath, 00:50:51.78\00:50:53.75 because he knows his time is short." 00:50:53.78\00:50:56.95 So when we look at the history of the early church, 00:50:56.99\00:50:58.75 we look at Paul, for example, 00:50:58.79\00:51:00.26 and Peter and we see heavy persecution. 00:51:00.29\00:51:02.99 You know, Jesus is talking to Peter, and he says, 00:51:03.02\00:51:05.03 you know, in the end of your life, 00:51:05.06\00:51:07.06 you're going to be led where you don't want to be led, 00:51:07.10\00:51:08.86 in the end of your life. 00:51:08.90\00:51:10.23 And Peter is like, you now, he has a hard time 00:51:10.27\00:51:13.74 even thinking about persecution, 00:51:13.77\00:51:15.44 but by the time he gets to the end of his life, 00:51:15.47\00:51:17.01 by the grace of God, 00:51:17.04\00:51:18.37 he's not even willing to be crucified 00:51:18.41\00:51:20.31 the way that Christ was crucified. 00:51:20.34\00:51:22.81 He was crucified upside down. 00:51:22.84\00:51:24.91 Paul went through the same experience, 00:51:24.95\00:51:26.28 both of them died around the same time, 00:51:26.31\00:51:28.28 under the sword of Nero. 00:51:28.32\00:51:29.65 Paul was a Roman soldier. 00:51:29.68\00:51:31.02 So he was not allowed to be crucified, 00:51:31.05\00:51:33.05 he was beheaded. 00:51:33.09\00:51:34.82 But you look at the early church, 00:51:34.86\00:51:36.19 persecution, persecution, persecution, persecution, 00:51:36.22\00:51:38.96 all the way down by pagan Rome to papal Rome, 00:51:38.99\00:51:42.06 a transition takes place now with the church. 00:51:42.10\00:51:45.23 And the church seems to gain popularity, 00:51:45.27\00:51:47.50 but the true church has to go underground, 00:51:47.54\00:51:49.50 the persecution is so heavy. 00:51:49.54\00:51:51.17 So you've got one set of people calling themselves Christians. 00:51:51.21\00:51:53.91 They've got the political power, 00:51:53.94\00:51:55.34 hello, and they've got the religious power. 00:51:55.38\00:51:57.81 And then you've got another group of people 00:51:57.85\00:51:59.48 calling themselves Christians, 00:51:59.51\00:52:00.85 and they've got the Holy Spirit power. 00:52:00.88\00:52:03.59 What does the Holy Spirit power cause them to do? 00:52:03.62\00:52:05.55 To endure persecution, to endure shame, 00:52:05.59\00:52:08.49 to endure suffering, 00:52:08.52\00:52:09.86 to go to Jesus outside the camp means 00:52:09.89\00:52:11.46 to receive of His blood, His life, His power, 00:52:11.49\00:52:14.56 and to have strength 00:52:14.60\00:52:15.93 through the time of persecution, 00:52:15.96\00:52:17.30 and that's what the church needed, 00:52:17.33\00:52:18.67 going all the way through the Dark Ages, 00:52:18.70\00:52:20.04 and then you come to the reformers 00:52:20.07\00:52:21.40 and the reformers were the outcasts. 00:52:21.44\00:52:22.77 You know, none of them wanted to leave the church, 00:52:22.80\00:52:24.97 Luther, Melanchthon, Hus, all of them 00:52:25.01\00:52:28.01 wanted to be part of the church, 00:52:28.04\00:52:29.54 but they were pushed 00:52:29.58\00:52:30.98 out because they stood for the Word of God 00:52:31.01\00:52:33.25 for the truth. 00:52:33.28\00:52:34.62 And so the reformers take us all the way to the Millerites. 00:52:34.65\00:52:36.69 And the Millerites went through the same thing, 00:52:36.72\00:52:38.39 they've discovered this great truth, 00:52:38.42\00:52:40.19 and all of a sudden, they're being disfellowshipped 00:52:40.22\00:52:41.92 from their churches, Miller is pointing people 00:52:41.96\00:52:45.19 and as a continuation of the reformation, 00:52:45.23\00:52:46.90 he's pointing people to the soon coming 00:52:46.93\00:52:49.30 of Jesus Christ. 00:52:49.33\00:52:50.67 And, of course, we come down to the very end of time 00:52:50.70\00:52:52.87 when the principles of Christianity are going 00:52:52.90\00:52:55.64 to be manifest in such a way that the whole world 00:52:55.67\00:52:58.54 is going to hate you. 00:52:58.57\00:52:59.91 We had an earlier lesson 00:52:59.94\00:53:01.28 that talked about that historian Tacitus. 00:53:01.31\00:53:03.91 And that historian, 00:53:03.95\00:53:05.51 one of the greatest historians of all time 00:53:05.55\00:53:07.45 talks about the Christians. 00:53:07.48\00:53:09.05 He lived from about AD 56 or 57 to AD 120. 00:53:09.08\00:53:14.09 The lesson says it this way, 00:53:14.12\00:53:15.46 and I love the way it's written, 00:53:15.49\00:53:16.83 I didn't get a chance to share this in the lesson. 00:53:16.86\00:53:18.43 So I'm going back now to December 25 to 31st lesson. 00:53:18.46\00:53:21.96 To bear approach of Christ simply means 00:53:22.00\00:53:24.07 to identify oneself with Christ 00:53:24.10\00:53:25.73 and to endure the shame and abuse 00:53:25.77\00:53:27.47 that this association implied. 00:53:27.50\00:53:30.54 Public animosity against Christians was the result 00:53:30.57\00:53:33.51 of their distinctive religious commitments. 00:53:33.54\00:53:37.28 People can get offended by religious practices 00:53:37.31\00:53:39.61 that they don't understand, 00:53:39.65\00:53:40.98 or by people whose lifestyle of morals 00:53:41.02\00:53:43.49 could make others feel guilty or shamed. 00:53:43.52\00:53:47.99 By the middle of the first century AD, 00:53:48.02\00:53:49.72 Tacitus considered Christians to be guilty 00:53:49.76\00:53:53.16 of "hatred against mankind." 00:53:53.19\00:53:57.67 That was the political line, that was the historical line, 00:53:57.70\00:54:00.27 and that's what they were saying, 00:54:00.30\00:54:01.64 these guys hate mankind. 00:54:01.67\00:54:03.27 Read Matthew 24:9, 00:54:03.30\00:54:04.97 because we're headed in that direction again. 00:54:05.01\00:54:06.84 What were the exact reasons for the charge, 00:54:06.88\00:54:09.38 certainly false? 00:54:09.41\00:54:10.81 Many early Christians such as the one Paul 00:54:10.85\00:54:12.58 had written letters to were suffering for their faith 00:54:12.61\00:54:14.65 because they did not want to pray to or acknowledge 00:54:14.68\00:54:18.12 the gods that protect Rome. 00:54:18.15\00:54:21.12 And they were falsely blamed for the burning of Rome, 00:54:21.16\00:54:23.66 something that was really the fault of Nero, 00:54:23.69\00:54:25.43 the fault of the government was placed upon the Christians. 00:54:25.46\00:54:28.43 They were falsely blamed for those things, 00:54:28.46\00:54:31.80 those calamities that were coming upon the earth. 00:54:31.83\00:54:34.80 We're going to repeat that history. 00:54:34.84\00:54:37.07 And so Hebrews Chapter 13 closes up with this admonition, 00:54:37.11\00:54:41.08 this encouragement, this message 00:54:41.11\00:54:43.04 that all of us need to understand as believers 00:54:43.08\00:54:45.15 and I can't think of a better place for us 00:54:45.18\00:54:47.98 to summarize this than in 2 Timothy Chapter 4. 00:54:48.02\00:54:53.19 2 Timothy Chapter 4, we're going to read verses 16, 00:54:53.22\00:54:55.92 17 and 18. 00:54:55.96\00:54:57.89 This is Paul finishing up his ministry 00:54:57.93\00:54:59.96 for the church, for God. 00:55:00.00\00:55:01.80 Again, Paul was beheaded under the government of his time, 00:55:01.83\00:55:05.17 that he called us to pray for, intercede for, 00:55:05.20\00:55:07.44 and to supplicate in behalf of. 00:55:07.47\00:55:09.84 And Paul says here in 2 Timothy 4:16, 00:55:09.87\00:55:12.84 "At my first answer, no man stood with me, 00:55:12.87\00:55:17.05 but all men forsook me." 00:55:17.08\00:55:19.18 Can you imagine being completely forsaken 00:55:19.21\00:55:20.98 even by your church members? 00:55:21.02\00:55:23.12 Completely forsaken? 00:55:23.15\00:55:24.49 And what does Paul say in the next verse? 00:55:24.52\00:55:25.89 He says I pray God, 00:55:25.92\00:55:28.02 that it may not be led to their charge. 00:55:28.06\00:55:30.39 Are you hearing the man who's connected with Jesus, 00:55:30.43\00:55:32.49 who's gone outside, who's gone to the cross? 00:55:32.53\00:55:35.16 Because that's what that altar represents in Hebrews 13. 00:55:35.20\00:55:38.43 "Notwithstanding the Lord stood by me 00:55:38.47\00:55:40.47 and strengthened me." 00:55:40.50\00:55:41.84 I love that. 00:55:41.87\00:55:43.20 I don't think I put the right emphasis on that 00:55:43.24\00:55:44.57 but we need to. 00:55:44.61\00:55:45.94 "Notwithstanding everyone forsakes us 00:55:45.97\00:55:47.31 the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, 00:55:47.34\00:55:50.01 that by me the preaching might be fully known, 00:55:50.05\00:55:53.08 and that all the Gentiles might hear: 00:55:53.11\00:55:55.15 and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion." 00:55:55.18\00:55:57.52 And verse 18, "The Lord shall deliver me 00:55:57.55\00:56:00.42 from every evil work and will preserve me 00:56:00.46\00:56:03.22 unto His heavenly kingdom: 00:56:03.26\00:56:04.69 to whom be glory forever and ever. 00:56:04.73\00:56:07.60 Amen. 00:56:07.63\00:56:09.56 When no one stands with us, no one stood with Christ, 00:56:09.60\00:56:12.63 no one stood with Stephen, no one stood with Paul, 00:56:12.67\00:56:15.47 the Lord will stand with us. 00:56:15.50\00:56:17.37 Amen. Amen.
