James? 00:03:04.05\00:03:05.98 Judgment and the Character of God. 00:03:06.01\00:03:07.35 Good to be here too. 00:03:07.38\00:03:08.72 See James and John, 00:03:08.75\00:03:11.45 we have the ends taken care of. 00:03:11.49\00:03:13.19 There you go. 00:03:13.22\00:03:14.56 But it's always good to have each one of you here today. 00:03:14.59\00:03:16.32 And, Jill, I'd like to ask you to pray for us today. 00:03:16.36\00:03:19.93 Holy Father, we're just grateful 00:03:19.96\00:03:21.60 that Jesus was our perfect sacrifice 00:03:21.63\00:03:23.80 and through Him, we have the gift of salvation. 00:03:23.83\00:03:26.63 Right now we open up our minds and hearts to receive 00:03:26.67\00:03:30.04 what Your Holy Spirit wants to teach us 00:03:30.07\00:03:32.67 through Your Word in Jesus' name. 00:03:32.71\00:03:35.18 Amen. 00:03:35.21\00:03:36.54 Amen. Amen. Thank you so much, Jill. 00:03:36.58\00:03:38.68 Let's go to that particular lesson. 00:03:38.71\00:03:41.85 And if you have your quarterly, I would encourage you 00:03:41.88\00:03:43.79 to just kind of pull that down off the shelf 00:03:43.82\00:03:46.42 and follow along with us as we talk about Jesus, 00:03:46.45\00:03:48.92 the Perfect Sacrifice. 00:03:48.96\00:03:50.96 The memory verse for today 00:03:50.99\00:03:54.33 is from the Book of Hebrews 10:14. 00:03:54.36\00:03:57.77 Hebrews 10:14, 00:03:57.80\00:04:00.04 I'll go ahead and read that. 00:04:00.07\00:04:01.87 And here it is. 00:04:01.90\00:04:03.97 "For by one offering, 00:04:04.01\00:04:07.08 He has perfected forever 00:04:07.11\00:04:09.94 those who are being sanctified." 00:04:09.98\00:04:13.58 I don't want you to miss that, 00:04:13.62\00:04:14.95 those who are being sanctified. 00:04:14.98\00:04:17.42 We have been sanctified, we are being sanctified, 00:04:17.45\00:04:21.86 and we will be sanctified by the eternal aspects. 00:04:21.89\00:04:25.83 We are saved, we are being saved, 00:04:25.86\00:04:28.50 and we will be saved. 00:04:28.53\00:04:29.86 Amen. 00:04:29.90\00:04:31.23 The beauty of the work of Christ, 00:04:31.27\00:04:32.60 it is not only immediate, it's continual, 00:04:32.63\00:04:35.04 and then it has an eternal and immortal impact on us. 00:04:35.07\00:04:39.51 I've been thinking about this, why were sacrifices needed? 00:04:39.54\00:04:42.51 That's a huge question. 00:04:42.54\00:04:43.98 Why were sacrifices needed? 00:04:44.01\00:04:45.81 And the short answer is 00:04:45.85\00:04:47.18 where there is no shedding of blood, 00:04:47.22\00:04:49.18 there is no remission of sin. 00:04:49.22\00:04:50.69 In one of our prior lesson Shelly made the statement 00:04:50.72\00:04:52.89 that God established the penalty for transgression. 00:04:52.92\00:04:57.46 And the Bible says the wages of sin is death. 00:04:57.49\00:05:00.60 So when you stand before the judge in any court setting, 00:05:00.63\00:05:04.63 if you are guilty, what do you ask for? 00:05:04.67\00:05:07.14 And if you're innocent, what do you ask for? 00:05:07.17\00:05:09.57 If you're guilty, don't ask for justice. 00:05:09.60\00:05:12.31 Want mercy. You want mercy. 00:05:12.34\00:05:14.34 But if you're innocent, what do you ask for? 00:05:14.38\00:05:16.58 Justice. 00:05:16.61\00:05:17.95 And so when we look at what the Lord has done, 00:05:17.98\00:05:21.98 the Apostle John says, 00:05:22.02\00:05:24.02 "Love has been perfected in this, 00:05:24.05\00:05:27.16 that we may have boldness in the Day of Judgment." 00:05:27.19\00:05:30.26 And I thought about that, you know, come boldly, 00:05:30.29\00:05:32.53 before the throne of grace, 00:05:32.56\00:05:33.90 have boldness in the Day of Judgment. 00:05:33.93\00:05:35.90 And it almost sound to some degree, 00:05:35.93\00:05:38.03 we will have, 00:05:38.07\00:05:40.00 I don't want to use the word arrogance, 00:05:40.04\00:05:41.37 but it seems like we could just run to the Lord. 00:05:41.40\00:05:43.94 Well, in fact, that's exactly what it saying. 00:05:43.97\00:05:45.31 It's an assurance. Yes. 00:05:45.34\00:05:46.68 Abba Father, 00:05:46.71\00:05:48.04 when the covenant relationship has accomplished 00:05:48.08\00:05:50.68 the mending of both hearts to one, 00:05:50.71\00:05:53.15 when you and your father are one, 00:05:53.18\00:05:56.05 and there is no gap between you because you love each other, 00:05:56.08\00:06:00.59 he loves you and provides for you, 00:06:00.62\00:06:02.52 you love him and are obedient to him, 00:06:02.56\00:06:05.03 then you can run to him for any and everything. 00:06:05.06\00:06:08.30 So I want to say to you today at the very beginning 00:06:08.33\00:06:10.30 of the outset, 00:06:10.33\00:06:11.67 because of the efficacious sacrifice of Jesus, 00:06:11.70\00:06:14.27 we can run to Him, 00:06:14.30\00:06:16.04 and know that we are going to be received 00:06:16.07\00:06:18.57 by an Eternal Father, and a Lord that keeps us 00:06:18.61\00:06:22.08 and strengthens us all the way. 00:06:22.11\00:06:24.28 Hebrews 9:15, 00:06:24.31\00:06:26.15 let's look at this together, Hebrews 9:15. 00:06:26.18\00:06:30.22 The Bible says, "And for this reason 00:06:30.25\00:06:32.82 He is the Mediator of a new covenant, 00:06:32.85\00:06:36.76 by means of death, for the redemption 00:06:36.79\00:06:39.89 of the transgressions under the first covenant, 00:06:39.93\00:06:43.53 that those who are called may receive the promise 00:06:43.57\00:06:46.97 of the eternal inheritance." 00:06:47.00\00:06:49.27 You know, the first covenant was continually practiced. 00:06:49.30\00:06:54.41 But it was just to be the foundation 00:06:54.44\00:06:58.48 or the ground work to remind people that when Jesus comes, 00:06:58.51\00:07:04.09 He would be able to ratify all of that. 00:07:04.12\00:07:07.56 He would be able to, 00:07:07.59\00:07:08.92 as was the case for many truckers, 00:07:08.96\00:07:10.83 He would be able to seal everything 00:07:10.86\00:07:12.99 that we have put inside of the trailer. 00:07:13.03\00:07:15.16 If the seal is not there, then we have no guarantee 00:07:15.20\00:07:18.50 that the work He has done is sufficient. 00:07:18.53\00:07:22.10 But when Paul says that His grace is sufficient for us, 00:07:22.14\00:07:26.98 he brings out another component that I want to emphasize, 00:07:27.01\00:07:29.74 which was very much a part of the first covenant 00:07:29.78\00:07:31.61 because of the people. 00:07:31.65\00:07:32.98 Why is His grace sufficient for us? 00:07:33.01\00:07:34.95 Because in our weakness, His strength is made perfect. 00:07:34.98\00:07:38.82 And that's something that the Israelites missed. 00:07:38.85\00:07:41.89 They thought that the sacrifice was sufficient 00:07:41.92\00:07:44.03 for their weakness. 00:07:44.06\00:07:45.49 But it wasn't because the sacrifice 00:07:45.53\00:07:47.40 and the people, they were both weak. 00:07:47.43\00:07:49.83 That's why there was a need for a more perfect sacrifice, 00:07:49.86\00:07:53.94 there was a need for a more perfect lamb. 00:07:53.97\00:07:58.27 Nothing that the people could have done 00:07:58.31\00:08:00.04 could have made their work sufficient. 00:08:00.08\00:08:03.75 So Jesus had to come. 00:08:03.78\00:08:05.25 So we find in Hebrews 9:15, it explains that 00:08:05.28\00:08:08.05 the death of Jesus as a sacrifice 00:08:08.08\00:08:10.12 had the purpose of providing redemption. 00:08:10.15\00:08:12.75 It was providing something, not just substituting, 00:08:12.79\00:08:15.49 but it was also a sacrifice of provision, 00:08:15.52\00:08:18.56 providing redemption of the transgressions 00:08:18.59\00:08:21.00 that were committed under the first covenant. 00:08:21.03\00:08:22.96 What is that saying? 00:08:23.00\00:08:24.43 Think about how many thousands of years 00:08:24.47\00:08:26.20 those sacrifices were going on. 00:08:26.23\00:08:29.37 And then somebody, 00:08:29.40\00:08:30.94 let's just say 3000 years later say, 00:08:30.97\00:08:35.81 "Was that okay? 00:08:35.84\00:08:37.18 Do we do that? Do we do okay?" 00:08:37.21\00:08:39.01 And, and then the response is, "If He's victorious, 00:08:39.05\00:08:43.69 everything you did is not in vain." 00:08:43.72\00:08:45.52 Amen. That's right. 00:08:45.55\00:08:46.89 "But if He's not victorious, 00:08:46.92\00:08:48.36 you just did 3000-4000 years of work 00:08:48.39\00:08:50.79 for no apparent benefit." 00:08:50.83\00:08:53.36 That's how the salvation of humanity teetered, 00:08:53.40\00:08:57.83 like the fulcrum point on a seesaw. 00:08:57.87\00:09:00.37 Jesus became the fulcrum point between the first covenant 00:09:00.40\00:09:03.77 and the second, or the more perfect covenant. 00:09:03.81\00:09:08.01 But the covenant hadn't changed. 00:09:08.04\00:09:09.44 It was continuous all the way through. 00:09:09.48\00:09:11.41 That's why Jeremiah made it very clear. 00:09:11.45\00:09:12.98 Let's go to Jeremiah 34. 00:09:13.01\00:09:15.25 And I want you to see how in verse 18, and 19, 00:09:15.28\00:09:19.25 he points out 00:09:19.29\00:09:21.69 why the sacrifices were necessary to atone for sin, 00:09:21.72\00:09:24.86 and ratify the covenant made between the parties involved. 00:09:24.89\00:09:28.26 Jeremiah 34:18-19, 00:09:28.30\00:09:30.93 "And I will give the men who have transgressed 00:09:30.97\00:09:34.17 My covenant, 00:09:34.20\00:09:35.94 who have not performed the words of the covenant 00:09:35.97\00:09:38.41 which they made before Me, 00:09:38.44\00:09:40.78 when they cut the calf in two 00:09:40.81\00:09:43.55 and passed between the parts of it." 00:09:43.58\00:09:46.15 It was in fact an exercise 00:09:46.18\00:09:47.52 whenever there was a covenant made, 00:09:47.55\00:09:48.88 they would separate the animal and walk between them 00:09:48.92\00:09:51.79 as a sign of I'm accepting this covenant, 00:09:51.82\00:09:54.66 I agree to this covenant. 00:09:54.69\00:09:57.13 But look at verse 19, "The princes of Judah, 00:09:57.16\00:10:00.60 the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, the priests, 00:10:00.63\00:10:04.00 and all the people of the land 00:10:04.03\00:10:05.60 who passed between the parts of the calf." 00:10:05.63\00:10:08.14 Now why did He mention the princes of Judah, 00:10:08.17\00:10:10.67 Jerusalem, the eunuchs and all the priests? 00:10:10.71\00:10:13.07 He says, as they made a covenant with one another, 00:10:13.11\00:10:15.98 and with me, I'm making a covenant with them. 00:10:16.01\00:10:19.48 Now He becomes, and when you go to Ephesians now, 00:10:19.51\00:10:22.88 the Bible says He broke down that middle wall of partition, 00:10:22.92\00:10:26.65 because walking between there was a separation 00:10:26.69\00:10:29.46 between one portion of the temple and the other. 00:10:29.49\00:10:34.03 And that curtain even itself, 00:10:34.06\00:10:37.00 Jesus became that middle partition. 00:10:37.03\00:10:40.40 So He removed the temporary partition, 00:10:40.44\00:10:43.27 He made all of those who were separated 00:10:43.30\00:10:45.47 by the ceremonial systems. 00:10:45.51\00:10:47.64 And let me add this component. 00:10:47.68\00:10:49.08 You had to be an Israelite, you had to be a Jew, 00:10:49.11\00:10:51.41 you had to be circumcised 00:10:51.45\00:10:52.78 to participate in the ceremonial services. 00:10:52.81\00:10:55.88 But when the Gentiles came in, 00:10:55.92\00:10:58.49 the circumcision of the heart was more important to Christ 00:10:58.52\00:11:02.79 than the circumcision of the flesh, 00:11:02.82\00:11:04.66 which was a necessity under the first covenant. 00:11:04.69\00:11:07.00 We find in Hebrews Chapter 9, 00:11:07.03\00:11:10.10 let's look at verse 6 and 7 00:11:10.13\00:11:12.97 why the sacrifices were necessary. 00:11:13.00\00:11:16.54 Hebrews 9:6-7, 00:11:16.57\00:11:18.57 "Now when these things had been thus prepared," 00:11:18.61\00:11:22.41 that is the sacrifices, 00:11:22.44\00:11:23.81 "the priests always went into the first part 00:11:23.85\00:11:26.21 of the tabernacle, performing the services. 00:11:26.25\00:11:29.28 But into the second part 00:11:29.32\00:11:31.29 the high priest went alone once a year, 00:11:31.32\00:11:34.26 not without blood, which he offered for himself 00:11:34.29\00:11:37.83 and for the people's sins committed in ignorance." 00:11:37.86\00:11:41.00 I want to add something here. 00:11:41.03\00:11:42.36 This is something we don't often focus 00:11:42.40\00:11:43.80 on committed in ignorance. 00:11:43.83\00:11:46.10 Paul the Apostle says, if we willfully sin, 00:11:46.13\00:11:49.20 there's a difference between a sin and iniquity. 00:11:49.24\00:11:51.67 Iniquity is this continual willful sin, 00:11:51.71\00:11:54.98 but in the growth aspect of preparing 00:11:55.01\00:11:59.55 for that eternal day, in our journey, 00:11:59.58\00:12:02.15 as David the Psalmist says, 00:12:02.18\00:12:03.52 a righteous man falls seven times, 00:12:03.55\00:12:05.65 but he gets back up. 00:12:05.69\00:12:07.56 The falling aspect is not the Bible saying, 00:12:07.59\00:12:10.19 just go ahead and intentionally fall, 00:12:10.23\00:12:12.09 intentionally participate in things that's going 00:12:12.13\00:12:14.03 to make you fall. 00:12:14.06\00:12:15.40 No, because it says in Jude 24, 00:12:15.43\00:12:16.90 "Unto Him who was able to keep you from falling." 00:12:16.93\00:12:18.83 Amen. 00:12:18.87\00:12:20.20 A lot of people think that I'm going to be a sinner 00:12:20.24\00:12:21.57 continuously until the day that I'm perfected. 00:12:21.60\00:12:24.34 No, overcoming by the blood of the lamb is available now. 00:12:24.37\00:12:28.74 That's right. 00:12:28.78\00:12:30.11 He says, "My children, I write to you that you not sin." 00:12:30.15\00:12:32.75 So He's not saying just keep on sinning, 00:12:32.78\00:12:34.48 that's not what He told the woman at the well. 00:12:34.52\00:12:35.85 He said, "Go and sin no more." 00:12:35.88\00:12:38.62 So whatever you are confronted with, 00:12:38.65\00:12:40.12 whatever challenge you had in your life, 00:12:40.16\00:12:42.19 because Jesus is the one who provides the sacrifice, 00:12:42.22\00:12:46.59 He doesn't just provide a sacrifice 00:12:46.63\00:12:48.40 to forgive you of your sin, He provides the grace 00:12:48.43\00:12:51.77 and the strength to make you an overcomer over that sin. 00:12:51.80\00:12:55.67 Amen. So a lot of people say that's just how I am. 00:12:55.70\00:12:59.11 And we make excuses for continuing 00:12:59.14\00:13:01.34 and a broken character, not seeking the sufficiency 00:13:01.38\00:13:04.71 that is in Christ. 00:13:04.75\00:13:06.08 So when He says, His grace is sufficient for us, 00:13:06.11\00:13:08.38 in our weakness His strength is made perfect, 00:13:08.42\00:13:10.52 it's not saying keep on being weak. 00:13:10.55\00:13:12.52 No, it is saying that in Christ, 00:13:12.55\00:13:14.72 I can do all things 00:13:14.76\00:13:16.09 that is also including the overcoming 00:13:16.12\00:13:18.16 of the transgression, that at one point, 00:13:18.19\00:13:20.63 cause you to stumble so easily, 00:13:20.66\00:13:22.86 laying aside every weight, 00:13:22.90\00:13:24.93 and the sin that so easily besets you. 00:13:24.97\00:13:27.24 Don't carry the weight, lay it aside. 00:13:27.27\00:13:30.04 That's why Revelation 12:11, says, 00:13:30.07\00:13:32.21 "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, 00:13:32.24\00:13:34.64 and by the word of their testimony, 00:13:34.68\00:13:36.41 and they did not love their lives to the death." 00:13:36.44\00:13:38.38 Now what does that mean? 00:13:38.41\00:13:39.75 Did not love their lives to the death? 00:13:39.78\00:13:41.58 It is also a comparison to the dedication 00:13:41.62\00:13:45.49 and the obedience of Jesus. 00:13:45.52\00:13:47.26 He was obedient unto the death of the cross. 00:13:47.29\00:13:49.82 It's not just saying that they are willing 00:13:49.86\00:13:51.19 to be martyrs for their faith is far deeper than that. 00:13:51.23\00:13:54.46 They are willing to be obedient even if it means 00:13:54.50\00:13:56.90 giving their lives to maintain an unbroken relationship 00:13:56.93\00:14:00.64 in obedience to Christ. 00:14:00.67\00:14:02.37 A lot of people are not obedient to the death, 00:14:02.40\00:14:04.41 because when death is mentioned, 00:14:04.44\00:14:05.77 they're ready to give it up. 00:14:05.81\00:14:07.31 I'm not dying for that, no, true dedication to Christ. 00:14:07.34\00:14:11.05 And an example of our gratitude for what He has done 00:14:11.08\00:14:14.98 would make us obedient even unto the death. 00:14:15.02\00:14:17.92 And so we see Romans 12:1, "I beseech you therefore, 00:14:17.95\00:14:20.86 brethren, by the mercies of God, 00:14:20.89\00:14:22.59 that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, 00:14:22.62\00:14:24.73 holy, acceptable to God, 00:14:24.76\00:14:27.36 which is your reasonable service." 00:14:27.40\00:14:28.93 Only in Christ and through the better sacrifice 00:14:28.96\00:14:31.80 is that made possible. 00:14:31.83\00:14:33.17 Amen. Amen. Thank you so much, Pastor John. 00:14:33.20\00:14:35.27 I love that beautiful foundation. 00:14:35.30\00:14:37.47 I'm Jill Morikone and I have Monday's lesson, 00:14:37.51\00:14:40.44 Diverse Kinds of Sacrifices. 00:14:40.48\00:14:43.85 Now, to me, this is an incredible study. 00:14:43.88\00:14:45.91 We know as Pastor John said so beautifully, 00:14:45.95\00:14:48.65 without shedding of blood, there is no remission of sins, 00:14:48.68\00:14:52.02 and Jesus died to fulfill the claims of the law. 00:14:52.05\00:14:55.22 The wages of sin is death, 00:14:55.26\00:14:57.03 but the gift of God is eternal life 00:14:57.06\00:14:59.33 through Christ Jesus our Lord, through His shed blood. 00:14:59.36\00:15:02.83 But as we look at Monday's lesson, 00:15:02.86\00:15:04.40 Diverse Kinds of Sacrifices, to be honest with you, 00:15:04.43\00:15:06.70 I learned a lot, 00:15:06.74\00:15:08.07 because I have not spent a great deal of time 00:15:08.10\00:15:11.31 studying the sacrificial system. 00:15:11.34\00:15:14.21 The overarching themes, of course, I've studied, 00:15:14.24\00:15:16.91 but not really super in detail. 00:15:16.95\00:15:18.91 So this has been a great study for me. 00:15:18.95\00:15:21.18 We're going to look at the five major types 00:15:21.22\00:15:24.39 of sacrificial offerings. 00:15:24.42\00:15:26.89 We're going to look at the meaning 00:15:26.92\00:15:28.32 of each one of those types, what it represented, 00:15:28.36\00:15:32.99 how it was fulfilled in Christ, and then the application. 00:15:33.03\00:15:36.63 So we're going to do the meaning, 00:15:36.67\00:15:38.10 the representation, and the application. 00:15:38.13\00:15:40.60 And those five types are all found in the Book of Leviticus. 00:15:40.64\00:15:44.47 Type number one, I'll tell you the five 00:15:44.51\00:15:45.84 and then we'll unpack them all. 00:15:45.87\00:15:47.34 Number one is the burnt offering. 00:15:47.38\00:15:49.84 Number two is the grain offering. 00:15:49.88\00:15:53.42 Number three is the peace offering 00:15:53.45\00:15:56.08 or the fellowship offering. 00:15:56.12\00:15:58.59 Number four is the sin offering, 00:15:58.62\00:16:01.32 or the purification offering. 00:16:01.36\00:16:03.46 Number five, 00:16:03.49\00:16:04.83 I call it the restitution offering, because to me, 00:16:04.86\00:16:07.20 that makes more sense, 00:16:07.23\00:16:08.56 but you could call it the reparation offering. 00:16:08.60\00:16:12.07 So let's unpack those. 00:16:12.10\00:16:13.44 What in the world does all this mean? 00:16:13.47\00:16:14.84 Let's look at the burnt offering. 00:16:14.87\00:16:17.57 We will find that in Leviticus Chapter 1. 00:16:17.61\00:16:19.67 What is the meaning of the burnt offering? 00:16:19.71\00:16:22.54 They actually offered, the Israelites, 00:16:22.58\00:16:25.41 they would offer a sheep, sometimes it was a goat, 00:16:25.45\00:16:28.92 sometimes it was a boar, sometimes it was a bird, 00:16:28.95\00:16:32.12 it always had to be without blemish. 00:16:32.15\00:16:35.69 This was an atonement offering. 00:16:35.72\00:16:38.76 The burnt offering, 00:16:38.79\00:16:40.13 the key point in the burnt offering 00:16:40.16\00:16:41.86 is that the entire animal was to be consumed on the altar. 00:16:41.90\00:16:45.37 Everything was to be burned except for the hide, 00:16:45.40\00:16:48.40 or the skin of the animal. 00:16:48.44\00:16:50.07 Everything else was to be burned. 00:16:50.11\00:16:52.37 Of course, the person would place their head, 00:16:52.41\00:16:54.91 their hand on the head of the animal, 00:16:54.94\00:16:57.65 and then that animal was accepted 00:16:57.68\00:17:00.48 to make atonement for them. 00:17:00.52\00:17:02.62 This is, of course, looking forward by faith 00:17:02.65\00:17:04.85 to Jesus the coming Messiah. 00:17:04.89\00:17:07.02 So what's the representation of the burnt offering? 00:17:07.06\00:17:10.13 Christ's entire life was consumed for you and for me. 00:17:10.16\00:17:15.53 Remember, the entire animal was consumed on the altar, 00:17:15.56\00:17:18.90 Christ's entire life is consumed, 00:17:18.93\00:17:20.54 Hebrews 7:27, "Who does not need daily," 00:17:20.57\00:17:24.24 this is referring to Jesus, 00:17:24.27\00:17:25.61 "as those high priests to offer up sacrifices, 00:17:25.64\00:17:28.91 first for His own sins, and then for the people's, 00:17:28.94\00:17:31.48 for this He did once for all, when He offered up Himself." 00:17:31.51\00:17:35.02 Jesus gave Himself completely, 00:17:35.05\00:17:37.59 entirely, His entire life was consumed for our salvation. 00:17:37.62\00:17:43.32 We also say we don't have time to read it. 00:17:43.36\00:17:45.33 But in Philippians Chapter 2, 00:17:45.36\00:17:47.40 we have this reference of Jesus being God, 00:17:47.43\00:17:50.67 being equal with God, giving up that station, 00:17:50.70\00:17:54.14 coming down to this earth, taking the form of a servant, 00:17:54.17\00:17:58.44 and then humbling Himself to death on the cross. 00:17:58.47\00:18:02.64 We see that entire sacrifice of Himself 00:18:02.68\00:18:07.68 when He came down. 00:18:07.72\00:18:09.15 What is the application for us today? 00:18:09.18\00:18:12.02 The blood of Jesus is to cover all of us, 00:18:12.05\00:18:14.62 not just one piece, but entirely. 00:18:14.66\00:18:17.43 Forgiveness is complete, forgiveness is total, 00:18:17.46\00:18:21.20 but surrender and submission 00:18:21.23\00:18:23.67 to God are to be complete in total. 00:18:23.70\00:18:26.33 Many times we'll only give a portion of the offering. 00:18:26.37\00:18:28.84 We don't give a burnt offering. 00:18:28.87\00:18:30.61 Okay, God, You can have this portion of me, 00:18:30.64\00:18:33.14 but I'm keeping back a portion for myself, 00:18:33.17\00:18:36.78 because I don't want my entire life 00:18:36.81\00:18:38.88 to be consumed or to be surrendered 00:18:38.91\00:18:41.92 or to be given to God. 00:18:41.95\00:18:43.79 Let's look at offering number two, 00:18:43.82\00:18:45.15 this is the grain offering. 00:18:45.19\00:18:47.36 And this was not an offering for atonement, 00:18:47.39\00:18:49.82 and this offering had no blood, 00:18:49.86\00:18:52.76 no flesh, 00:18:52.79\00:18:54.13 there was no death involved in this offering. 00:18:54.16\00:18:58.60 It did not have the purpose of providing atonement. 00:18:58.63\00:19:01.04 It was actually a gift of gratitude 00:19:01.07\00:19:03.41 for God's provision in sustaining His people. 00:19:03.44\00:19:08.41 Now what's interesting with all the offerings, 00:19:08.44\00:19:10.25 I just thought this is an interesting side note, 00:19:10.28\00:19:12.11 they added salt as a preservative, 00:19:12.15\00:19:14.48 symbolizing the permanence of God's covenant 00:19:14.52\00:19:17.49 with His people, all the offerings, 00:19:17.52\00:19:19.15 they added salt. 00:19:19.19\00:19:20.92 So what is the representation of this? 00:19:20.96\00:19:22.79 Remember, this grain offering is a gift of gratitude 00:19:22.82\00:19:25.59 for God's provision in sustaining His people. 00:19:25.63\00:19:28.40 Christ is the one who provides eternal life, 00:19:28.43\00:19:31.30 He is the bread of life. 00:19:31.33\00:19:32.73 The grain offering, He is the bread of life. 00:19:32.77\00:19:35.40 John 6:35. 00:19:35.44\00:19:37.51 Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. 00:19:37.54\00:19:41.08 He who comes to Me shall never hunger. 00:19:41.11\00:19:43.65 He who believes in Me shall never thirst." 00:19:43.68\00:19:47.02 You see, Christ sustains us. 00:19:47.05\00:19:49.42 Christ provides eternal life for us. 00:19:49.45\00:19:52.89 That's right. Jesus is the bread of life. 00:19:52.92\00:19:56.56 And what's the application for us today? 00:19:56.59\00:19:58.59 We need to feed on Jesus, the Word, 00:19:58.63\00:20:01.63 we need to feed on Him and His Word. 00:20:01.66\00:20:05.97 In addition to that, I believe we need to walk in recognition 00:20:06.00\00:20:09.70 of His provision for our lives. 00:20:09.74\00:20:11.74 If this offering is a gift of gratitude 00:20:11.77\00:20:14.61 for God's provision and sustaining His people, 00:20:14.64\00:20:17.05 clearly every day, I need to recognize 00:20:17.08\00:20:20.05 He is my God, He is my Creator, He is my Savior, 00:20:20.08\00:20:24.09 He is my Redeemer, and soon coming King. 00:20:24.12\00:20:27.19 Let's look at offering number three. 00:20:27.22\00:20:28.72 This is the peace offering, or the fellowship offering. 00:20:28.76\00:20:33.56 Now, in this case, 00:20:33.60\00:20:35.66 the offer ate not just the priest, 00:20:35.70\00:20:39.13 so the person bringing the offering would partake 00:20:39.17\00:20:43.44 of the flesh as well. 00:20:43.47\00:20:45.17 Now they did not partake of the fat or the blood, 00:20:45.21\00:20:47.38 but they would partake of certain portions. 00:20:47.41\00:20:50.15 The purpose of the offering was to praise God, 00:20:50.18\00:20:52.18 this was not an atonement offering either, 00:20:52.21\00:20:54.52 the grain offering is not atonement, 00:20:54.55\00:20:56.28 and the peace offering is not an atonement offering. 00:20:56.32\00:20:59.12 They could bring a male or a female animal, 00:20:59.15\00:21:01.79 which is interesting, without blemish to the Lord. 00:21:01.82\00:21:06.53 This would be a communal meal with friends and family 00:21:06.56\00:21:10.37 to celebrate the well being provided by God. 00:21:10.40\00:21:14.74 So what's the representation of this? 00:21:14.77\00:21:16.37 Remember, the offer would partake of the meal together, 00:21:16.40\00:21:20.94 the representation, you and I, 00:21:20.98\00:21:23.01 are to spiritually partake of Christ. 00:21:23.04\00:21:26.51 Now this is really fascinating. 00:21:26.55\00:21:27.98 Remember, this is called the peace offering. 00:21:28.02\00:21:29.95 I've always thought of Jesus sacrifice in terms 00:21:29.98\00:21:32.25 of blood, right? 00:21:32.29\00:21:33.62 Without the shedding of blood, there's no remission of sins. 00:21:33.66\00:21:35.59 His blood covers my sins, His blood covers my debt. 00:21:35.62\00:21:38.66 That's how I have processed it. 00:21:38.69\00:21:41.43 But also there's a lot in peace involved with His death. 00:21:41.46\00:21:45.20 Romans 5:1, "Having been justified by faith, 00:21:45.23\00:21:48.14 we have peace with God," why? 00:21:48.17\00:21:50.54 "Through our Lord Jesus Christ." 00:21:50.57\00:21:52.51 Does that mean that Jesus' sacrifice 00:21:52.54\00:21:54.84 provides peace for us? 00:21:54.88\00:21:56.61 Think about Isaiah 53. 00:21:56.64\00:21:58.91 This is, of course, referring to Jesus. 00:21:58.95\00:22:01.68 He was wounded for our transgressions, 00:22:01.72\00:22:04.55 He was bruised for our iniquities. 00:22:04.59\00:22:06.52 The chastisement for our, what's that word? 00:22:06.55\00:22:08.42 Peace was upon Him, by His stripes, we are healed, 00:22:08.46\00:22:12.43 His sacrifice provided peace for us. 00:22:12.46\00:22:15.10 Ephesians 2:14, 00:22:15.13\00:22:16.46 "He Himself is our," what's that word? 00:22:16.50\00:22:18.43 "Peace who has made both one, 00:22:18.47\00:22:21.57 and broken down the middle wall of separation." 00:22:21.60\00:22:24.71 Now, that's something I want to study more, 00:22:24.74\00:22:26.74 is the sacrifice of Jesus providing peace. 00:22:26.78\00:22:30.11 You and I participate in this sacrifice 00:22:30.15\00:22:33.15 by eating His flesh and drinking His blood, 00:22:33.18\00:22:36.15 we see this in John 6. 00:22:36.18\00:22:37.82 Now let's look at the sin offering 00:22:37.85\00:22:39.72 or the purification offering. 00:22:39.75\00:22:41.22 This is offering number four. 00:22:41.26\00:22:42.92 Now, this is most definitely an atonement offering. 00:22:42.96\00:22:46.53 Of the five offerings, three of them were atonement offerings. 00:22:46.56\00:22:49.90 The burnt offering was for non-defiant type of sins. 00:22:49.93\00:22:54.64 The sin offering, which we're discussing right now 00:22:54.67\00:22:56.81 was for non-deliberate sins. 00:22:56.84\00:22:59.77 The restitution offering, which is offering number five 00:22:59.81\00:23:02.94 was for misusing holy things. 00:23:02.98\00:23:06.01 And you can see this in Leviticus 4 and 5, 00:23:06.05\00:23:07.98 the sin offering. 00:23:08.02\00:23:09.42 The interesting point is that the blood was applied 00:23:09.45\00:23:11.95 to the outer altar in the courtyard. 00:23:11.99\00:23:14.02 So the blood in this offering is more prominently displayed 00:23:14.06\00:23:18.03 than in the other offerings. 00:23:18.06\00:23:20.70 The representation, Christ redeemed me, 00:23:20.73\00:23:24.37 His life was provided, 00:23:24.40\00:23:26.74 His blood redeems us from sin. 00:23:26.77\00:23:30.47 He says in Matthew 26, 00:23:30.51\00:23:31.91 "This is My blood of the new covenant, 00:23:31.94\00:23:34.11 which has shed for many for the remission of sins." 00:23:34.14\00:23:39.11 What's the application for you and I today? 00:23:39.15\00:23:40.62 We are to accept His blood that can cover our sin. 00:23:40.65\00:23:44.82 Finally, number five, we're running out of time, 00:23:44.85\00:23:47.16 the restitution offering or the reparation offering. 00:23:47.19\00:23:50.53 Now this was also an atonement offering. 00:23:50.56\00:23:52.99 But the interesting thing is that the person 00:23:53.03\00:23:55.63 who brought the offering was required to make restitution. 00:23:55.66\00:23:59.13 Not only did they bring the sacrifice, 00:23:59.17\00:24:01.67 but they had to pay a penalty of 20% to restore 00:24:01.70\00:24:06.91 what was wrongfully taken. 00:24:06.94\00:24:08.98 It represents that Jesus Christ has paid the debt for my sin. 00:24:09.01\00:24:14.25 He does not just redeem me by His blood, 00:24:14.28\00:24:17.15 but He paid the debt that I owed. 00:24:17.19\00:24:20.49 And it says that you and I today, 00:24:20.52\00:24:22.32 even though we come to God and we ask for forgiveness, 00:24:22.36\00:24:25.26 there are times when, 00:24:25.29\00:24:26.63 if we have wronged someone else, 00:24:26.66\00:24:28.90 God requires us to make restitution 00:24:28.93\00:24:32.83 for what we have done and to pay that back. 00:24:32.87\00:24:35.27 That is the restitution offering. 00:24:35.30\00:24:37.61 Amen. Okay. 00:25:33.33\00:25:36.16 That's the title of the overall lesson. 00:25:36.20\00:25:37.90 And I certainly appreciated that foundation. 00:25:37.93\00:25:40.40 It was very, very precise 00:25:40.44\00:25:41.90 and very helpful in us understanding deeper 00:25:41.94\00:25:45.17 what this means by Christ or Jesus' perfect sacrifice. 00:25:45.21\00:25:48.71 I have Tuesday's lesson, of course, 00:25:48.74\00:25:50.21 and the lesson starts out by having us read Hebrews 7:27, 00:25:50.25\00:25:55.38 as well as Hebrews 10:10. So let's go to those passages. 00:25:55.42\00:25:59.55 Hebrews 7:27, 00:25:59.59\00:26:02.86 and notice what the Bible says. 00:26:02.89\00:26:05.03 It says, "Who does not daily need daily," 00:26:05.06\00:26:07.40 this of course referring to Christ, 00:26:07.43\00:26:08.96 "as those high priest to offer up sacrifices for, 00:26:09.00\00:26:12.70 notice, first for His own sins and then for the people's, 00:26:12.73\00:26:16.04 for this He did once for all, 00:26:16.07\00:26:19.11 when He offered up Himself." 00:26:19.14\00:26:21.44 I love that. 00:26:21.48\00:26:22.81 He did this once for all, when He offered up Himself. 00:26:22.84\00:26:26.45 I love that. 00:26:26.48\00:26:27.82 And, of course, going to Hebrews 10:10, 00:26:27.85\00:26:29.52 the same message is echoed. 00:26:29.55\00:26:31.32 Hebrews 10:10 says, "By that way, 00:26:31.35\00:26:34.16 we have been sanctified 00:26:34.19\00:26:36.93 through the offering of the body of Jesus," 00:26:36.96\00:26:39.53 there it is, again, "once for all." 00:26:39.56\00:26:42.46 Of course, Jesus was the perfect sacrifice, 00:26:42.50\00:26:44.90 which is why He could only be offered up once 00:26:44.93\00:26:47.50 and only for all 00:26:47.54\00:26:48.87 because He is the perfect sacrifice. 00:26:48.90\00:26:50.41 The Levitical priest daily 00:26:50.44\00:26:52.17 as brought out in Hebrews 7:27, 00:26:52.21\00:26:54.91 as well as every year 00:26:54.94\00:26:56.41 as brought out clearly in Hebrews 9:25, 00:26:56.44\00:26:59.51 offered gifts and sacrifices that cannot perfect 00:26:59.55\00:27:03.18 the conscience of the worker. 00:27:03.22\00:27:04.85 And, of course, this is also clearly communicated 00:27:04.89\00:27:06.99 in Hebrews 9:9-10, as well as Hebrews 10:1-4, 00:27:07.02\00:27:11.69 there's going to be lots of scripture, so get ready. 00:27:11.73\00:27:13.90 Hebrews 9:9-10. 00:27:13.93\00:27:15.56 Notice what the Bible says, 00:27:15.60\00:27:18.20 again, bringing out the fact that this cannot perfect 00:27:18.23\00:27:21.87 the conscience of the worshiper. 00:27:21.90\00:27:23.24 So Hebrews 9:9-10, 00:27:23.27\00:27:24.97 "It was symbolic for the present time 00:27:25.01\00:27:27.88 in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered," 00:27:27.91\00:27:30.58 there it is, "which cannot make Him 00:27:30.61\00:27:32.21 who performed the service perfect in regard 00:27:32.25\00:27:35.02 to the conscience, concerned only with food and drinks, 00:27:35.05\00:27:37.92 various washings and fleshly ordinances 00:27:37.95\00:27:39.95 imposed until the time of reformation." 00:27:39.99\00:27:42.26 Of course, Jill covered that a little bit in depth there. 00:27:42.29\00:27:44.56 She went through the different sin or the different offerings, 00:27:44.59\00:27:48.66 but Hebrews 10:1-4 00:27:48.70\00:27:50.77 goes a little deeper in expressing this as well. 00:27:50.80\00:27:53.54 Notice, Hebrews 10:1-4, it says, "For the law, 00:27:53.57\00:27:57.61 having a shadow of good things to come, 00:27:57.64\00:27:59.87 and not the very image of the things 00:27:59.91\00:28:01.94 can never with the same sacrifices, 00:28:01.98\00:28:05.25 which they offer continually year by year, 00:28:05.28\00:28:08.32 make those who approach perfect. 00:28:08.35\00:28:11.02 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? 00:28:11.05\00:28:14.36 For the worshipers, once purified, 00:28:14.39\00:28:17.03 would have had no more conscious of sins. 00:28:17.06\00:28:20.60 But in those sacrifices, there is a reminder 00:28:20.63\00:28:23.16 of sins every year, for it is not possible 00:28:23.20\00:28:27.27 that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sin." 00:28:27.30\00:28:30.94 All of that, of course, 00:28:30.97\00:28:32.31 as the Bible makes it very clear, 00:28:32.34\00:28:33.68 we're types and shadows pointing forward 00:28:33.71\00:28:35.68 to the perfect sacrifice which we find in Christ Jesus 00:28:35.71\00:28:39.85 who died once for all, as the scripture plainly says. 00:28:39.88\00:28:43.42 Jesus' sacrifice is superior to the sacrifice of animals 00:28:43.45\00:28:47.06 because, notice this, Jesus was the Son of God, 00:28:47.09\00:28:51.03 He was perfect and in of Himself 00:28:51.06\00:28:52.79 who perfectly fulfilled God's will, 00:28:52.83\00:28:55.06 according to Hebrews 10:5-10. 00:28:55.10\00:28:57.80 In fact, let's go to Hebrews 7 again, 00:28:57.83\00:28:59.27 we've read this text many times 00:28:59.30\00:29:01.00 that again this amplifies this message 00:29:01.04\00:29:03.27 and communicating what we're establishing today 00:29:03.30\00:29:05.07 as Christ's perfect sacrifice. 00:29:05.11\00:29:06.91 So Hebrews Chapter 7, we're going to read verses 26 to 28. 00:29:06.94\00:29:10.15 And notice what the Bible says here, 00:29:10.18\00:29:11.78 "For such a high priest was fitting for us 00:29:11.81\00:29:14.22 who is holy, harmless, undefiled, 00:29:14.25\00:29:16.82 separate from sinners, 00:29:16.85\00:29:18.19 and has become higher than the heavens, 00:29:18.22\00:29:20.99 who does not need daily as those high priests 00:29:21.02\00:29:23.73 to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins 00:29:23.76\00:29:27.33 and then for the people's, for this He died," 00:29:27.36\00:29:29.60 here it is again, "once for all, 00:29:29.63\00:29:31.97 when He offered up Himself, 00:29:32.00\00:29:33.87 for the law appoints as high priest, 00:29:33.90\00:29:35.50 men who have weakness, but the word of the oath 00:29:35.54\00:29:38.84 which came after the law appoints the Son 00:29:38.87\00:29:41.71 who has been perfected forever." 00:29:41.74\00:29:45.11 I love that. He has been perfected forever. 00:29:45.15\00:29:47.65 My mind goes back to that beautiful prophetic text 00:29:47.68\00:29:50.32 of the 70 weeks prophecy, where it says He, 00:29:50.35\00:29:53.05 speaking of Christ, confirmed the covenant 00:29:53.09\00:29:54.99 with many for one week but in the midst of that, 00:29:55.02\00:29:56.59 He brought an end to sacrifice and offering. 00:29:56.62\00:29:59.86 Only Christ can confirm the covenant. 00:29:59.89\00:30:02.03 Only Jesus' blood can bring in into all sacrifice 00:30:02.06\00:30:05.20 and offering. 00:30:05.23\00:30:06.57 It is very, very clear. 00:30:06.60\00:30:07.94 Hebrews 10, and we're going to read verses 5 through 10. 00:30:07.97\00:30:10.44 Hebrews 10:5-10. 00:30:10.47\00:30:13.31 It says, "Therefore, when He came into the world, 00:30:13.34\00:30:15.71 He said: 'Sacrifice and offering 00:30:15.74\00:30:17.95 You did not desire, but a body You have prepared for Me.' 00:30:17.98\00:30:22.42 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin 00:30:22.45\00:30:24.65 you had no pleasure. 00:30:24.69\00:30:26.59 Then I said, 'Behold, I have come, 00:30:26.62\00:30:28.66 in the volume of the book it is written of Me, 00:30:28.69\00:30:31.16 to do Your will, O God.' 00:30:31.19\00:30:33.83 Previously saying, 'Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, 00:30:33.86\00:30:37.93 and offerings for sin You did not desire, 00:30:37.97\00:30:40.34 nor had pleasure in them, ' 00:30:40.37\00:30:41.74 which are offered according to the law, 00:30:41.77\00:30:43.61 then He said, 'Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.' 00:30:43.64\00:30:47.94 He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 00:30:47.98\00:30:51.68 By that will we have been sanctified 00:30:51.71\00:30:54.58 through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ," 00:30:54.62\00:30:57.39 there it is again," once for all.'" 00:30:57.42\00:31:00.09 My friends, once Jesus Christ died, 00:31:00.12\00:31:02.36 it was done once for all, He completed the work 00:31:02.39\00:31:04.86 because His sacrifice was indeed a perfect sacrifice. 00:31:04.89\00:31:09.06 First, Jesus' sacrifice is perfectly effective 00:31:09.10\00:31:12.40 and never to be surpassed. 00:31:12.43\00:31:14.04 The sacrifices of the Levitical priests 00:31:14.07\00:31:15.90 were repeated because they were not effective. 00:31:15.94\00:31:18.51 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered 00:31:18.54\00:31:20.91 since the worshipers having once been cleansed, 00:31:20.94\00:31:23.41 as we read earlier, would no longer have 00:31:23.45\00:31:25.18 any consciousness of sins? 00:31:25.21\00:31:27.68 Second of all, okay, this is important, 00:31:27.72\00:31:29.78 the different kinds of sacrifices 00:31:29.82\00:31:31.19 of the Old Testament found their fulfillment at the cross. 00:31:31.22\00:31:34.92 Thus Jesus not only cleanses us from sin, this is huge, 00:31:34.96\00:31:38.69 please get this, not only cleanses us from sin, 00:31:38.73\00:31:41.36 He also provides sanctification 00:31:41.40\00:31:43.80 as we see there in Hebrews 10:10-14, 00:31:43.83\00:31:46.53 which I believe we're going to read in just a moment. 00:31:46.57\00:31:48.87 It says here, lost my place. There we go. 00:31:48.90\00:31:52.91 Jesus not only cleanses us from sin, 00:31:52.94\00:31:54.68 He also provides sanctification 00:31:54.71\00:31:56.38 by putting sin away from our lives. 00:31:56.41\00:31:59.01 This is huge. And pastor alluded to this earlier. 00:31:59.05\00:32:01.32 And I just want to reemphasize and imply, 00:32:01.35\00:32:03.85 apply here very clearly, that a lot of people's idea 00:32:03.89\00:32:06.62 of the gospel is that Jesus died on the cross simply 00:32:06.65\00:32:09.82 for the means of forgiveness. 00:32:09.86\00:32:11.76 You know, Jesus died on the cross 00:32:11.79\00:32:13.13 so that I might have forgiveness and that's true. 00:32:13.16\00:32:15.23 Christ did die so that we might have forgiveness. 00:32:15.26\00:32:17.47 But He died, my friends, 00:32:17.50\00:32:18.83 for much more than just forgiveness. 00:32:18.87\00:32:20.57 Christ also died, that we might have complete 00:32:20.60\00:32:23.30 victory over sin. 00:32:23.34\00:32:24.71 That's where that sanctification process comes. 00:32:24.74\00:32:27.04 In fact, it's implied and very clearly communicated 00:32:27.08\00:32:29.38 in 1 John 1:9, when it says, 00:32:29.41\00:32:31.48 "If we confess our sins, 00:32:31.51\00:32:32.85 He is just to forgive us our sins," 00:32:32.88\00:32:34.35 and then people stop right there. 00:32:34.38\00:32:35.72 But they don't read the next part. 00:32:35.75\00:32:37.09 "And to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 00:32:37.12\00:32:39.92 My friends, the cross, 00:32:39.95\00:32:41.29 the perfect sacrifice of Jesus was yes, 00:32:41.32\00:32:44.09 to pay the penalty, yes, 00:32:44.13\00:32:45.46 to provide a way for forgiveness, 00:32:45.49\00:32:47.30 but to also pave the way 00:32:47.33\00:32:49.33 and to make it a reality that just as Christ 00:32:49.36\00:32:51.97 was able to overcome the sin of the world, 00:32:52.00\00:32:54.07 we also through Him and through His shed blood, 00:32:54.10\00:32:56.94 and through His power can also overcome sin. 00:32:56.97\00:32:59.94 Before the priests could approach God in the sanctuary 00:32:59.97\00:33:02.74 and minister in behalf of their fellow human beings, 00:33:02.78\00:33:05.68 they had to be cleansed and sanctified or consecrated. 00:33:05.71\00:33:08.98 And when you read about this in Leviticus 00:33:09.02\00:33:10.39 Chapter 8 and 9, we're not going to read it. 00:33:10.42\00:33:12.45 I'm just referencing it so you can go read it for homework, 00:33:12.49\00:33:15.06 Leviticus 8 and 9. 00:33:15.09\00:33:16.59 Jesus' sacrifice cleanses us and consecrates us 00:33:16.62\00:33:19.59 so that we may approach God with confidence 00:33:19.63\00:33:22.56 and serve Him as a royal priesthood. 00:33:22.60\00:33:26.20 So now we go to Hebrews Chapter 10, 00:33:26.23\00:33:28.17 and you see this very clearly 00:33:28.20\00:33:29.54 communicated in Hebrews 10:10-14, 00:33:29.57\00:33:32.14 as well as 19 through 23. 00:33:32.17\00:33:33.98 So let's notice what the Bible says here in Hebrews 10:10-14. 00:33:34.01\00:33:38.61 It says, "By that will we have been sanctified 00:33:38.65\00:33:42.02 through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ," 00:33:42.05\00:33:43.92 there it is once more, "once for all. 00:33:43.95\00:33:46.89 And every priest stands ministering daily 00:33:46.92\00:33:49.32 and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, 00:33:49.36\00:33:51.66 which can never take away sins. 00:33:51.69\00:33:54.00 But this Man, 00:33:54.03\00:33:55.36 after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever," 00:33:55.40\00:33:59.57 I love that, once for all, forever, 00:33:59.60\00:34:02.70 "He sat down at the right hand of God, 00:34:02.74\00:34:04.71 from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. 00:34:04.74\00:34:08.01 For by one offering He has perfected 00:34:08.04\00:34:10.61 forever those who are being sanctified." 00:34:10.65\00:34:13.85 And then now you go down to verses 19 through 23. 00:34:13.88\00:34:16.08 It continues, "Therefore, brethren, 00:34:16.12\00:34:17.62 having boldness to enter the Holiest 00:34:17.65\00:34:20.26 by the blood of Jesus." 00:34:20.29\00:34:21.62 Notice, you're not going into the Holiest 00:34:21.66\00:34:22.99 unless it's by the blood of Jesus Christ. 00:34:23.02\00:34:25.69 "By a new and living way 00:34:25.73\00:34:27.23 which He consecrated for us, through the veil, 00:34:27.26\00:34:29.73 that is, His flesh, 00:34:29.76\00:34:31.10 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 00:34:31.13\00:34:33.97 let us draw near with a true heart 00:34:34.00\00:34:36.64 in full assurance of faith, 00:34:36.67\00:34:38.91 having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience 00:34:38.94\00:34:41.54 and our bodies washed with pure water. 00:34:41.58\00:34:44.45 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, 00:34:44.48\00:34:47.88 for He who promised is faithful." 00:34:47.92\00:34:50.95 And the lesson has this final comment here. 00:34:50.99\00:34:52.89 It says finally Jesus' 00:34:52.92\00:34:54.26 sacrifice also provides nourishment 00:34:54.29\00:34:57.99 for our spiritual life. 00:34:58.03\00:34:59.36 I love that. 00:34:59.39\00:35:00.93 It provides an example that we need to observe and follow. 00:35:00.96\00:35:05.43 Thus, Hebrews invites us to fix our eyes upon Jesus, 00:35:05.47\00:35:09.87 especially the events of the cross 00:35:09.90\00:35:12.27 and follow His lead. 00:35:12.31\00:35:14.58 That's why the Bible says in Hebrews Chapter 12, 00:35:14.61\00:35:16.61 we've quoted this so many times. 00:35:16.64\00:35:18.08 In fact, it's probably the theme of Hebrews, 00:35:18.11\00:35:20.65 Hebrews 12:1-3. 00:35:20.68\00:35:22.85 But I'm looking at verse 2 here, 00:35:22.88\00:35:24.22 "Looking unto Jesus, 00:35:24.25\00:35:26.69 the author and finisher of our faith, 00:35:26.72\00:35:28.69 who for the joy that was set before Him." 00:35:28.72\00:35:32.33 And why was that joy set before Him? 00:35:32.36\00:35:33.76 Why did He look into that with joy? 00:35:33.80\00:35:35.23 Because God is love, Christ is love. 00:35:35.26\00:35:38.40 "For the joy that was set before Him, 00:35:38.43\00:35:39.77 He endured the cross, despising the shame 00:35:39.80\00:35:41.74 and has sat down at the right hand 00:35:41.77\00:35:43.47 of the throne of God." 00:35:43.51\00:35:44.84 My friends, plain and simple, Jesus' sacrifice, 00:35:44.87\00:35:47.71 the only sacrifice was perfect. 00:35:47.74\00:35:50.01 Amen. 00:35:50.05\00:35:51.38 Oh, that's absolutely, once for all, 00:35:51.41\00:35:53.45 He is the perfect sacrifice. 00:35:53.48\00:35:55.52 I'm Shelley Quinn. 00:35:55.55\00:35:57.05 And my lesson today is The Cross 00:35:57.09\00:36:00.72 and the Cost of Forgiveness. 00:36:00.76\00:36:02.62 We always talk about the free gift of God, 00:36:02.66\00:36:06.39 which is salvation by grace through faith. 00:36:06.43\00:36:08.86 Grace is free to us, but I want you to know, 00:36:08.90\00:36:12.50 it cost God everything. 00:36:12.53\00:36:15.97 He had to become a man and die to shed 00:36:16.00\00:36:20.28 the precious blood of Jesus Christ. 00:36:20.31\00:36:22.64 That's the cost of grace, 00:36:22.68\00:36:24.01 but that's how much God puts a value on your life. 00:36:24.05\00:36:29.05 Let's look at Hebrews Chapter 9, 00:36:29.08\00:36:31.69 we're going to start with verse 22. 00:36:31.72\00:36:34.82 Hebrews 9:22, "According to the law, 00:36:34.86\00:36:37.16 almost all things are purified with blood, 00:36:37.19\00:36:39.76 and without the shedding of blood, 00:36:39.79\00:36:41.20 there is no remission." 00:36:41.23\00:36:42.76 You can think back to Adam and Eve in the garden 00:36:42.80\00:36:45.53 when they sinned, 00:36:45.57\00:36:46.90 and they lost that covering of light, 00:36:46.94\00:36:49.97 that they found themselves naked. 00:36:50.01\00:36:52.27 What did God have to do? 00:36:52.31\00:36:54.11 He killed an animal to provide skins to cover their sin. 00:36:54.14\00:36:58.01 So without the shedding of blood, 00:36:58.05\00:36:59.58 there is no remission of sin. 00:36:59.61\00:37:01.25 That's right. 00:37:01.28\00:37:02.62 Verse 23, "Therefore it was necessary 00:37:02.65\00:37:04.19 that the copies of the things in the heavens, 00:37:04.22\00:37:07.46 that would be the earthly copies, 00:37:07.49\00:37:09.52 the sanctuaries should be purified 00:37:09.56\00:37:12.99 with these sacrifices of the animals, 00:37:13.03\00:37:16.67 but the heavenly things, 00:37:16.70\00:37:19.43 the heavenly sanctuary should be purified 00:37:19.47\00:37:23.14 with some a better sacrifice than these." 00:37:23.17\00:37:26.27 And that was the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. 00:37:26.31\00:37:29.51 Verse 24, Hebrews 9:24," 00:37:29.54\00:37:32.48 For Christ has not entered into the holy places 00:37:32.51\00:37:35.55 made with hands like the tabernacle on earth, 00:37:35.58\00:37:38.92 which are just copies of the true 00:37:38.95\00:37:41.29 but into heaven itself." 00:37:41.32\00:37:44.69 Now to appear in the presence of God for us, 00:37:44.73\00:37:48.36 He sits at the right hand of the throne as the last Adam, 00:37:48.40\00:37:52.67 the new representative of mankind, 00:37:52.70\00:37:54.60 He intercedes for us continually. 00:37:54.64\00:37:57.71 And it says not that He should, at verse 25, 00:37:57.74\00:38:01.14 "Not that He should offer Himself often 00:38:01.18\00:38:03.61 as the High Priest does when He enters 00:38:03.65\00:38:05.55 the Most Holy Place every year 00:38:05.58\00:38:07.45 with the blood of another." 00:38:07.48\00:38:09.22 Then it says in verse 26, 00:38:09.25\00:38:11.55 "He would have had to suffer often since the foundation 00:38:11.59\00:38:14.02 of the world, but now, 00:38:14.06\00:38:16.42 once at the end of the ages, 00:38:16.46\00:38:20.50 ever since Christ showed up, this is the end of the ages, 00:38:20.53\00:38:25.10 things are coming to a culmination, 00:38:25.13\00:38:27.10 He came to perform God's will and achieve God's will. 00:38:27.14\00:38:32.01 So now at the end of the ages, 00:38:32.04\00:38:34.31 He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself, 00:38:34.34\00:38:39.41 and as it is appointed for men to die once, 00:38:39.45\00:38:44.02 but after this the judgment. 00:38:44.05\00:38:46.92 So Christ was offered once 00:38:46.96\00:38:50.36 to bear the sins of many." 00:38:50.39\00:38:52.66 I have to pause here and say this, 00:38:52.69\00:38:55.83 He died for all, 00:38:55.86\00:38:58.13 but He will only bear the sins for many, 00:38:58.17\00:39:00.94 because it will only be those who receive Him 00:39:00.97\00:39:04.74 as Lord and Savior of their life. 00:39:04.77\00:39:08.41 "To those who eagerly wait for Him," it continues, 00:39:08.44\00:39:12.55 "He will appear a second time apart from sin for salvation." 00:39:12.58\00:39:16.35 Hallelujah. 00:39:16.38\00:39:18.15 You see, the old, the sanctuary of the Old Covenant 00:39:18.19\00:39:22.59 was nothing but a copy of the heavenly sanctuary. 00:39:22.62\00:39:27.30 Hebrews 8:5, God is talking about this. 00:39:27.33\00:39:31.33 And it says, "That those priests, 00:39:31.37\00:39:34.20 the earthly priests, the Levitical priests 00:39:34.24\00:39:36.40 served the copy and shadow of the heavenly things 00:39:36.44\00:39:40.64 as Moses was divinely instructed 00:39:40.68\00:39:44.01 when he was about to make the tabernacle 00:39:44.05\00:39:46.68 for God said to him, 00:39:46.72\00:39:48.25 'Moses, see that you make all things according 00:39:48.28\00:39:52.92 to the pattern shown you on the mountain.'" 00:39:52.95\00:39:55.72 The Ark of the Covenant when you saw the tabernacle, 00:39:55.76\00:39:58.99 there was the outer court, where the burnt, 00:39:59.03\00:40:02.30 altar burnt offering was, there was the Holy Place 00:40:02.33\00:40:05.73 where we had the table of showbread, 00:40:05.77\00:40:07.97 the incense that was before the veil, 00:40:08.00\00:40:11.81 and we had the seven-branched candlestick. 00:40:11.84\00:40:14.74 But behind the veil was the Holy of Holies. 00:40:14.78\00:40:18.21 Only once a year did the high priests go in there. 00:40:18.25\00:40:20.95 The Holy of Holies had the Ark of the Covenant. 00:40:20.98\00:40:24.45 This was the symbolic of the throne of God. 00:40:24.49\00:40:28.32 The Ten Commandments were inside the ark, 00:40:28.36\00:40:31.03 because the Ten Commandments are the foundation 00:40:31.06\00:40:34.13 of God's government. 00:40:34.16\00:40:35.50 It was in the Old Covenant, it's in the New Covenant. 00:40:35.53\00:40:39.07 And above the Ten Commandments was the mercy seat 00:40:39.10\00:40:43.20 because mercy always triumphs 00:40:43.24\00:40:46.24 judgment between the cherubim, 00:40:46.27\00:40:49.41 the Shekinah Glory of God would come down, 00:40:49.44\00:40:52.28 and He would sit on His throne, that throne, 00:40:52.31\00:40:56.05 that ark was a symbol of God's government. 00:40:56.08\00:40:59.65 Yes. 00:40:59.69\00:41:01.02 So Psalm 97:2 says, "That righteousness 00:41:01.06\00:41:04.59 and justice are the foundation of His throne." 00:41:04.63\00:41:10.03 As the omnipotent ruler, God is our judge, 00:41:10.07\00:41:14.07 He bears judicial responsibility. 00:41:14.10\00:41:19.41 To be fair, He's got to vindicate the innocent, 00:41:19.44\00:41:24.31 but He must judge and punish the guilty. 00:41:24.35\00:41:28.55 Let me tell you something, 00:41:28.58\00:41:31.12 justice is to get what you deserve, 00:41:31.15\00:41:34.82 mercy is not to get what you deserve, 00:41:34.86\00:41:40.30 but grace, 00:41:40.33\00:41:42.13 grace is to receive what you don't deserve. 00:41:42.16\00:41:47.87 In Exodus 34:7, it talks about God, 00:41:47.90\00:41:51.74 "He's speaking Himself that He keeps mercy for thousands, 00:41:51.77\00:41:54.91 forgiving iniquity, and transgression and sin, 00:41:54.94\00:41:58.35 but by no means clearing the guilty." 00:41:58.38\00:42:01.38 His way of judging affects the public perception 00:42:01.42\00:42:06.32 of righteousness of His government. 00:42:06.35\00:42:09.32 So to carry out just, 00:42:09.36\00:42:12.73 He's a just God and to carry out justice, 00:42:12.76\00:42:16.70 God had to become a man to take on our flesh, 00:42:16.73\00:42:20.64 so that He could die in our place, 00:42:20.67\00:42:24.34 paying that penalty. 00:42:24.37\00:42:26.71 And you know what? 00:42:26.74\00:42:28.08 That makes Him both just and the justifier 00:42:28.11\00:42:32.55 because He bears our sin. 00:42:32.58\00:42:35.72 In the original Hebrew, the word for forgiveness 00:42:35.75\00:42:41.26 means to bear, to carry our sin. 00:42:41.29\00:42:46.13 So under the Old Covenant system, 00:42:46.16\00:42:48.66 which pointed to Christ, everything about it, 00:42:48.70\00:42:51.13 there were two phases of cleansing from sin. 00:42:51.17\00:42:54.50 The first, the sinner brought an animal sacrifice, 00:42:54.54\00:42:58.21 he placed his hands on the little sacrifice, 00:42:58.24\00:43:01.01 the lamb, transferring his sins from himself to the substitute, 00:43:01.04\00:43:06.92 and then cut its throat. 00:43:06.95\00:43:09.32 Now, I'm saying that and I did that. 00:43:09.35\00:43:12.02 I don't mean to be disrespectful. 00:43:12.05\00:43:13.86 Can you imagine what it would be like 00:43:13.89\00:43:16.46 to cut the throat of a little baby lamb, 00:43:16.49\00:43:20.56 because you sinned? 00:43:20.60\00:43:21.93 Boy, make, I think you would think about it 00:43:21.96\00:43:23.97 twice before you sinned again. 00:43:24.00\00:43:26.37 But the blood of the animal was dobbed on the horns 00:43:26.40\00:43:29.94 of the altar, 00:43:29.97\00:43:31.57 and then that's the burnt offer, 00:43:31.61\00:43:35.14 the altar of burnt offering. 00:43:35.18\00:43:37.05 And then it was transferred before the veil, 00:43:37.08\00:43:40.95 it was sprinkled before the veil 00:43:40.98\00:43:43.72 that separated the Holy and Most Holy Place. 00:43:43.75\00:43:46.55 So the sin was symbolically transferred 00:43:46.59\00:43:50.76 to God Himself. 00:43:50.79\00:43:52.53 It allowed God to show justice 00:43:52.56\00:43:56.30 and mercy at the same time. 00:43:56.33\00:43:59.03 But the second phase of cleansing of sin was done 00:43:59.07\00:44:02.97 once a year on the Day of Atonement, 00:44:03.00\00:44:05.51 the only day that the high priest 00:44:05.54\00:44:09.28 and only the high priest 00:44:09.31\00:44:11.28 could go behind the veil. 00:44:11.31\00:44:13.48 Now we've got a whole study coming up on the veil. 00:44:13.52\00:44:16.25 It's fabulous. 00:44:16.28\00:44:17.69 But the high priest 00:44:17.72\00:44:19.32 went behind the veil to, 00:44:19.35\00:44:24.43 in the Holy of Holies to cleanse 00:44:24.46\00:44:27.93 the sanctuary of sin. 00:44:27.96\00:44:29.56 Now listen to what our author of our quarterly says, 00:44:29.60\00:44:33.54 "At the end of the year, on the Day of Atonement, 00:44:33.57\00:44:36.07 which was the Day of Judgment, 00:44:36.10\00:44:39.44 God would cleanse the sanctuary, 00:44:39.47\00:44:41.54 clearing His judicial responsibility 00:44:41.58\00:44:44.68 by transferring the sins from the sanctuary 00:44:44.71\00:44:50.09 to the scape goat, Azazel..." 00:44:50.12\00:44:53.76 Azazel. 00:44:53.79\00:44:55.12 Azazel, one day I'll pronounce that correctly. 00:44:55.16\00:44:57.96 "Azazel, who represented Satan." 00:44:57.99\00:45:01.96 You find that in Leviticus 16:15-22. 00:45:02.00\00:45:06.63 But then the author goes on and says, 00:45:06.67\00:45:08.20 "Those who confessed their sins during the year 00:45:08.24\00:45:10.97 showed loyalty to God by observing a solemn rest 00:45:11.01\00:45:15.61 and afflicting themselves on the Day of Atonement. 00:45:15.64\00:45:18.48 Those who did not show loyalty would be cut off." 00:45:18.51\00:45:24.45 Wow, that's eye-opening. 00:45:24.49\00:45:27.16 It makes sense that Jesus, 00:45:27.19\00:45:30.46 as our substitutionary sacrifice, 00:45:30.49\00:45:35.23 cleansed the heavenly temple. 00:45:35.26\00:45:37.77 Everything was a pattern. 00:45:37.80\00:45:39.13 So it had to be done. There had to be a cleansing. 00:45:39.17\00:45:43.37 What happened at that time, 00:45:43.41\00:45:46.11 the vindication of God's character, 00:45:46.14\00:45:49.14 because the cosmic conflict has all been about God's character, 00:45:49.18\00:45:53.92 and what happened is Christ transferred sin 00:45:53.95\00:45:59.39 to its rightful author, Satan. 00:45:59.42\00:46:01.69 Amen. Amen. 00:46:01.72\00:46:04.06 Praise God. 00:46:04.09\00:46:05.43 These lessons have been incredible. 00:46:05.46\00:46:07.33 They've been such a blessing, the Book of Hebrews. 00:46:07.36\00:46:09.30 I have Thursday's lesson, 00:46:09.33\00:46:10.67 which is really going to pick up Shelley 00:46:10.70\00:46:12.03 where you left off. 00:46:12.07\00:46:13.44 It's entitled Judgment and the Character of God. 00:46:13.47\00:46:16.50 My name is James Rafferty, 00:46:16.54\00:46:18.24 and we're looking here in Romans 3:21-26. 00:46:18.27\00:46:22.08 Now, we are going 00:46:22.11\00:46:23.75 to be staying in the theme of Hebrews. 00:46:23.78\00:46:25.85 But for this day, 00:46:25.88\00:46:27.45 we haven't really been given Hebrews to look at. 00:46:27.48\00:46:29.95 But if you want to think about 00:46:29.98\00:46:31.82 as we read through these verses, 00:46:31.85\00:46:33.19 what we're talking about, 00:46:33.22\00:46:34.56 what we're going to be focusing on judgment 00:46:34.59\00:46:36.59 and the character of God, 00:46:36.62\00:46:38.09 the overall foundation for this is going 00:46:38.13\00:46:40.56 to be Hebrews 11 and Hebrews 12. 00:46:40.60\00:46:42.03 We haven't really gotten there yet. 00:46:42.06\00:46:43.40 We're still at Hebrews 10, 00:46:43.43\00:46:44.77 kind of moving towards that direction. 00:46:44.80\00:46:46.53 But we'll see how what we're going to look at now 00:46:46.57\00:46:48.50 connects with Hebrews 11, and Hebrews Chapter 12. 00:46:48.54\00:46:51.21 Okay, Romans Chapter 3, beginning with verse 21. 00:46:51.24\00:46:55.84 "But now, the righteousness of God, 00:46:55.88\00:46:59.21 the justice of God, the righteousness of God, 00:46:59.25\00:47:01.92 the fairness of God, without the law is manifested, 00:47:01.95\00:47:04.69 being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 00:47:04.72\00:47:07.12 even the righteousness of God 00:47:07.16\00:47:09.26 which is by faith of Jesus Christ, 00:47:09.29\00:47:13.40 unto all and upon all them that believe, 00:47:13.43\00:47:15.73 for there is no difference." 00:47:15.76\00:47:17.10 There's no difference between believers 00:47:17.13\00:47:19.23 and those that don't believe when it comes to God 00:47:19.27\00:47:22.60 doing what's right. 00:47:22.64\00:47:23.97 That's right. The righteousness of God. 00:47:24.01\00:47:25.87 God has to do what's right. 00:47:25.91\00:47:27.44 And He does this through the faith of Jesus. 00:47:27.48\00:47:30.11 Now, the faith of Jesus is something 00:47:30.15\00:47:32.25 that Jesus wants us to have. 00:47:32.28\00:47:33.72 But before we have it, He has it. 00:47:33.75\00:47:35.62 It's His faith before it's our faith. 00:47:35.65\00:47:38.55 The Bible says that Jesus Christ 00:47:38.59\00:47:40.26 is the author and the finisher of faith. 00:47:40.29\00:47:43.89 And that's, of course, Hebrews 12:2. 00:47:43.93\00:47:46.93 So Jesus Christ has this faith toward us 00:47:46.96\00:47:50.43 before we have faith back toward Him. 00:47:50.47\00:47:52.83 And that faith causes Him, 00:47:52.87\00:47:54.47 well it says here to be presented, 00:47:54.50\00:47:56.67 for those who are awe and for those who believe, 00:47:56.71\00:48:00.34 that is according to Romans Chapters 1 and 2, 00:48:00.38\00:48:02.78 everyone, all we like sheep have gone astray, 00:48:02.81\00:48:05.45 we turned everyone to His own way 00:48:05.48\00:48:06.82 and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all." 00:48:06.85\00:48:10.19 Isaiah 53:6. 00:48:10.22\00:48:12.42 Then it goes on to say, for all have sinned, 00:48:12.45\00:48:14.89 that's past tense, and come short, present tense, 00:48:14.92\00:48:18.33 continue, of the glory of God. 00:48:18.36\00:48:20.20 All have sinned, 00:48:20.23\00:48:21.56 and come short of the glory of God 00:48:21.60\00:48:24.17 being justified freely by His grace... 00:48:24.20\00:48:26.77 Hallelujah. 00:48:26.80\00:48:28.14 Through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. 00:48:28.17\00:48:29.90 Grace is getting what we don't deserve. 00:48:29.94\00:48:32.91 That's right. 00:48:32.94\00:48:34.41 "Whom," it says in verse 25, "God has set forth Jesus Christ 00:48:34.44\00:48:37.68 to be propitiation through faith in His blood, 00:48:37.71\00:48:39.61 to declare His righteousness for the remission 00:48:39.65\00:48:41.75 of sins of the past through the forbearance of God 00:48:41.78\00:48:43.75 to declare I say, at this time, His righteousness, 00:48:43.79\00:48:46.55 that He might be just and the justify Him 00:48:46.59\00:48:49.12 that believes in Jesus." 00:48:49.16\00:48:50.49 These are the verses that we're looking at here 00:48:50.53\00:48:52.73 in Thursday's lesson. 00:48:52.76\00:48:54.10 I want to read from the NIV these last two verses, 00:48:54.13\00:48:56.56 verses 25 and 26. 00:48:56.60\00:48:58.03 Here is what the NIV says, I think it's a little clearer. 00:48:58.07\00:49:00.50 "God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement 00:49:00.54\00:49:04.27 through His blood, excuse me, through the shedding 00:49:04.31\00:49:07.98 of His blood to be received by faith. 00:49:08.01\00:49:09.98 He did this to demonstrate His righteousness, 00:49:10.01\00:49:13.62 or we could say to demonstrate His justice." 00:49:13.65\00:49:16.48 Why? Why did God need to demonstrate His justice? 00:49:16.52\00:49:19.39 Because in His forbearance, 00:49:19.42\00:49:22.16 He had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished. 00:49:22.19\00:49:25.66 Now let's just stop there for just a second. 00:49:25.69\00:49:28.50 This verse is telling us that up until the coming of Christ, 00:49:28.53\00:49:31.70 we might even say even to our time, 00:49:31.73\00:49:33.57 no one has been punished for sin. 00:49:33.60\00:49:36.30 No one has been punished for sin. 00:49:36.34\00:49:37.67 You might say, "Well, what about the, you know, 00:49:37.71\00:49:39.04 the antediluvians, you know, God flooded the world? 00:49:39.07\00:49:41.18 And what about, you know, Sodom and Gomorrah, 00:49:41.21\00:49:43.08 you know, where God just brim fire and brimstone?" 00:49:43.11\00:49:45.35 Well, that actually wasn't punishment. 00:49:45.38\00:49:47.92 The ultimate punishment for sin is the second death. 00:49:47.95\00:49:51.35 That's right. Amen. 00:49:51.39\00:49:52.72 And the Bible indicates that there is no one 00:49:52.75\00:49:55.66 who has actually experienced that punishment but one, 00:49:55.69\00:49:59.23 and that is Jesus. 00:49:59.26\00:50:01.70 That's why in Psalm 51, 00:50:01.73\00:50:03.37 David is repenting of His sin with Bathsheba 00:50:03.40\00:50:05.27 and he actually says there in Psalm 51:4, 00:50:05.30\00:50:08.10 "Against Thee and Thee only have I sinned." 00:50:08.14\00:50:13.11 Because Jesus, God in the person of humanity 00:50:13.14\00:50:17.25 is the only one that has actually experienced 00:50:17.28\00:50:19.65 the ultimate consequence of sin. 00:50:19.68\00:50:22.88 God in His forbearance has not brought 00:50:22.92\00:50:24.55 that consequence upon the world. 00:50:24.59\00:50:25.92 Why? 00:50:25.95\00:50:27.29 Because the faith of Jesus says, "You know what? 00:50:27.32\00:50:28.66 If I die, if I become a man, if I take their sin upon, 00:50:28.69\00:50:31.29 if I carry that sin, 00:50:31.33\00:50:33.06 I believe that if they see that, 00:50:33.09\00:50:35.00 I believe that if I be lifted up, 00:50:35.03\00:50:37.00 John 12:32, that it'll draw all unto me, 00:50:37.03\00:50:40.87 I believe that." 00:50:40.90\00:50:42.24 That's my faith towards humanity. 00:50:42.27\00:50:43.61 And that faith towards humanity 00:50:43.64\00:50:45.37 is going to be rewarded in those that actually exercise 00:50:45.41\00:50:48.04 faith back to Jesus, who appreciate what He's done, 00:50:48.08\00:50:50.81 who respond to what He's done, 00:50:50.85\00:50:53.21 and who allow what He's done to be lived out in their lives. 00:50:53.25\00:50:56.62 And so the author here is saying 00:50:56.65\00:50:57.99 that this is the walk, 00:50:58.02\00:50:59.95 the reason why we have a judgment, 00:50:59.99\00:51:02.62 the reason why we have a judgment that's connected 00:51:02.66\00:51:04.63 with the character of God is because the character 00:51:04.66\00:51:07.16 of God is being revealed through Jesus 00:51:07.20\00:51:09.50 and that revelation actually causes us to make a decision. 00:51:09.53\00:51:13.30 Are we going to accept that or not? 00:51:13.34\00:51:15.44 And the judgment is where we figure out 00:51:15.47\00:51:18.44 if we accept that or not. 00:51:18.47\00:51:20.08 You see, we're not saved by our works, 00:51:20.11\00:51:21.84 we're saved by grace. 00:51:21.88\00:51:23.48 But our works testify as to whether 00:51:23.51\00:51:26.15 we've accepted that grace. 00:51:26.18\00:51:27.52 Amen. Have we accepted that salvation? 00:51:27.55\00:51:29.35 Because if we have, there's going to be fruit in our lives. 00:51:29.38\00:51:33.25 If we've accepted 00:51:33.29\00:51:34.62 what Jesus Christ has done for us, 00:51:34.66\00:51:36.49 if we have received the faith He's exercised toward us, 00:51:36.52\00:51:39.73 if we have the faith of Jesus that He exercised towards us, 00:51:39.76\00:51:44.03 we are actually going to keep the Commandments of God. 00:51:44.07\00:51:47.84 Amen. 00:51:47.87\00:51:49.20 That's why Revelation Chapter 14 closes out 00:51:49.24\00:51:51.17 with this beautiful picture in the proclamation 00:51:51.21\00:51:53.27 of the everlasting gospel. 00:51:53.31\00:51:54.64 Here are they that have or keep the faith of Jesus, 00:51:54.68\00:51:57.95 the faith that He's exercised toward us. 00:51:57.98\00:51:59.61 That's the gospel, and the Commandments of God, 00:51:59.65\00:52:01.88 the fruit of that faith 00:52:01.92\00:52:03.25 obedience in their lives. 00:52:03.28\00:52:08.36 So we look at this, it's powerful, 00:52:08.39\00:52:10.26 because what happens with God's people 00:52:10.29\00:52:12.79 is this mediation in the judgment applies 00:52:12.83\00:52:15.76 to all who receive the grace of Jesus Christ. 00:52:15.80\00:52:18.83 And as it is applied to them, their record comes up, 00:52:18.87\00:52:23.07 have they accepted, their record comes up. 00:52:23.10\00:52:25.14 And Hebrews Chapter 11 tells us what that record looks like. 00:52:25.17\00:52:27.84 You see Noah, who was faithful to preach for 120 years, 00:52:27.88\00:52:32.58 Hebrews 11 doesn't mention that he got drunk in his tent. 00:52:32.61\00:52:34.88 That's right. 00:52:34.92\00:52:36.25 You see Abraham who stepped out in faith, 00:52:36.28\00:52:38.22 you know, not knowing where he's going, 00:52:38.25\00:52:39.65 doesn't say he lied about his wife 00:52:39.69\00:52:41.76 being his sister twice. 00:52:41.79\00:52:44.13 You see Moses, who refused to be called Pharaoh's son 00:52:44.16\00:52:47.30 and suffered affliction with the people of God 00:52:47.33\00:52:49.53 doesn't say that Moses killed that Egyptian 00:52:49.56\00:52:51.70 and buried him in the sand. 00:52:51.73\00:52:53.40 There is no record in Hebrews 11 00:52:53.44\00:52:56.20 of the failures of God's people, 00:52:56.24\00:52:58.64 because they are standing in the faith of Jesus Christ. 00:52:58.67\00:53:01.71 They are standing in the blood of Jesus Christ, 00:53:01.74\00:53:04.18 the righteousness of Jesus Christ, 00:53:04.21\00:53:06.21 and all of their record has been blotted out. 00:53:06.25\00:53:09.72 Hebrews 11 could be a perfect example 00:53:09.75\00:53:12.09 of the investigative judgment 00:53:12.12\00:53:14.82 that vindicates the character of God because God said, 00:53:14.86\00:53:17.39 I believe if these people see me and accept me 00:53:17.43\00:53:19.93 that their lives will be transformed 00:53:19.96\00:53:21.43 and they will be returned to obedience, 00:53:21.46\00:53:23.97 they will be returned to faithfulness to My law. 00:53:24.00\00:53:26.60 There's a closing statement we want to look at here 00:53:26.63\00:53:28.80 it's in the quarterly speaking of this judgment, 00:53:28.84\00:53:31.91 Ellen G. White wrote, 00:53:31.94\00:53:34.71 "Man cannot meet these charges himself." 00:53:34.74\00:53:38.01 That is the accusations that Satan is bringing against us 00:53:38.05\00:53:41.22 in this judgment time. 00:53:41.25\00:53:43.08 "Innocence stain garments confessing his guilt, 00:53:43.12\00:53:45.49 he stands before God but Jesus, our advocate, 00:53:45.52\00:53:48.79 presents an effectual plea in behalf 00:53:48.82\00:53:51.33 of all who by repentance, and faith, the faith of Jesus, 00:53:51.36\00:53:55.46 have committed the keeping of their souls to Him. 00:53:55.50\00:53:58.07 He pleads their cause and vanquishes their accuser 00:53:58.10\00:54:01.57 by the mighty arguments of Calvary." 00:54:01.60\00:54:03.87 Hallelujah. Amen. 00:54:03.91\00:54:05.57 His perfect obedience to God's law. 00:54:05.61\00:54:10.85 Even unto the death of the cross, 00:54:10.88\00:54:12.95 has given Him all power in heaven and earth, 00:54:12.98\00:54:16.69 and He claims of His Father, 00:54:16.72\00:54:19.39 mercy and reconciliation for guilty man. 00:54:19.42\00:54:22.92 His perfect obedience is how we stand in the judgment. 00:54:22.96\00:54:26.93 Well, what about our obedience? 00:54:26.96\00:54:28.30 Well, our obedience testifies that we trust in His obedience. 00:54:28.33\00:54:31.73 Amen. 00:54:31.77\00:54:33.10 But why we should realize our sinful condition, 00:54:33.13\00:54:35.80 we have to rely wholly upon Christ as our righteousness, 00:54:35.84\00:54:38.67 our sanctification, our redemption 00:54:38.71\00:54:40.04 that's taken from 1 Corinthians 1:30. 00:54:40.08\00:54:42.38 We cannot answer the charges of Satan against us. 00:54:42.41\00:54:45.35 Christ alone can make an effectual plea in our behalf. 00:54:45.38\00:54:48.82 Why is that? Because He perfectly obey God's law. 00:54:48.85\00:54:50.92 And in the judgment, the law of God is the perfect standard. 00:54:50.95\00:54:54.82 And it has to be met perfectly 00:54:54.86\00:54:56.42 and only Christ was able to do that. 00:54:56.46\00:54:58.33 Amen. But guess what? 00:54:58.36\00:54:59.86 He did that so that we can put our trust in Him 00:54:59.89\00:55:03.53 and our lives and hearts can be transformed. 00:55:03.57\00:55:06.13 The perfect righteousness of Christ is not an excuse 00:55:06.17\00:55:09.57 to turn that grace into a license to sin. 00:55:09.60\00:55:13.64 Jude warns us not to allow people to convince us 00:55:13.68\00:55:17.01 that they're going to slip in among us. 00:55:17.05\00:55:18.81 But we got to earnestly contend for the faith, 00:55:18.85\00:55:21.08 Jude says in verses 3 and 4. 00:55:21.12\00:55:23.85 "Christ alone can make an effectual plea on our behalf. 00:55:23.89\00:55:26.42 He is able to silence the accuser 00:55:26.45\00:55:28.42 with arguments founded not upon our merits, 00:55:28.46\00:55:30.69 but upon His own." 00:55:30.73\00:55:32.23 And that's Testimonies for the Church, volume five, 00:55:32.26\00:55:35.00 pages 471 and 472. 00:55:35.03\00:55:37.70 And I would encourage you, copy that. 00:55:37.73\00:55:41.17 If you have access to those writings, copy that. 00:55:41.20\00:55:43.34 I have a copy of that in the front of my Bible. 00:55:43.37\00:55:46.47 I read it often because it reminds me 00:55:46.51\00:55:49.04 of this beautiful picture of the investigative judgment 00:55:49.08\00:55:52.55 and the righteousness of Jesus Christ. 00:55:52.58\00:55:54.82 And so when we look at our lesson for Thursday, 00:55:54.85\00:55:56.99 the title of this lesson, 00:55:57.02\00:55:58.35 The Judgment and the Character of God, 00:55:58.39\00:55:59.82 God's character is going 00:55:59.85\00:56:01.32 to be vindicated in this judgment, 00:56:01.36\00:56:03.39 because we're going to be seeing Jesus Christ 00:56:03.43\00:56:05.59 as He really is and the faith of Jesus toward us. 00:56:05.63\00:56:08.16 Amen.
